56th FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY OF MEN-TSEE-KHANG (SOWA-RIGPA) COLLEGE

The 56th founding Anniversary of Men-Tsee-Khang College was celebrated on 1 June, 2017 at Men-TseeKhang college hall. The ceremony commenced with recitation of Yuthok Prayers. Mr. Tashi Tsering Phuri, Director of MenTsee-Khang; Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, Chairman of High Level Medical & Astro. Council; Head of the various Departments of Men-Tsee-Khang and the students attended the celebration.

The themes were on Disturbing Factors of Mental Health, Ways to Prevent Mental Illness and Remedies for Disorders of Mental Health which were discussed through the three-fold perspectives of Buddhist Philosophy, Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan Astro-Science. The speakers for the course were Geshe Tenpa Tashi, Head of BML Department; Geshe Tenzin Damchoe, Buddhist Philosophy Lecturer, CHTS Sarah; Tibetan AstroScience Practitioner Tenzin Nyendak and Dr. Ngawang Jinpa Sunang. There were ten participants from seven different countries: Germany, Mexico, U.K, USA, Canada, Turkey and Italy. All the participants were felicitated with the traditional scarves and certificates of participation by Mr. Tsering Phuntsok, General Secretary of Men-Tsee-Khang. Emory Tibet Medical Sciences Exchange Programme 5-day Tibetan Medicine Study Programme was conducted to the second group of six Medical students from Emory University School of Medicine from 19 - 23 June, 2017. The programme was a part of the 5th Emory Tibet Medical Sciences Exchange Programme (ETMS 2017), a collaborative programme between Emory University and Men-Tsee-Khang since 2013.

Dr. Lobsang Yeshi, Vice Principal, gave a brief introduction on the origin and development as well as academic performances of the college. Then, Dr. Tsewang Tamdin spoke on the occasion, followed by the Director. COURSES 10 – Day Course on Mental Healthcare Services The Body, Mind and Life Department (BML) of Men-TseeKhang organized the 4th “10 – Day Course on Mental Healthcare Services” from 14 to 23 June, 2017.

Besides the courses on Tibetan Medicine and Tibetan Astro-Science, the students also had clinical observation at the Men-Tsee-Khang outpatient clinic, and a guided tour to pharmacy, quality assurance laboratory and museum. WORLD PEACE MARCH BY MONKS, NUNS AND LAY PERSONS FROM THAILAND His Holiness the Dalai Lama blessed a group of more than 108 monks, nuns and layman from Thailand for their march for World Peace from Dharamsala to Ladakh on 7 June, 2017. This march was their second journey for World Peace. Like last year, His Holiness the Dalai Lama instructed MenTsee-Khang to send a Medical Team for the service of the Peace Marchers. Dr. Tenzin Thaye, Visiting Physician to H.H. the Dalai Lama joined the group to provide free medical assistance. 2017 and the participants were felicitated with scarf for their dedication and commitment for the promotion of compassion, love and harmony. The Thailand group donated Rs. 28,000.00 as a token of appreciation for the health care service provided by Men-Tsee-Khang. AWARENESS / MEDICAL CAMP Dharamsala 2-day medical camp was conducted by Men-Tsee-Khang on 8 and 9 June, 2017 after the three days teaching of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Nagarjuna's Commentary on Bodhicitta (Jangchup Semdrel) & Gyalsey Thokme Sangpo's Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva (laklen sodunma) for the Tibetan Youth at the main Temple, Dharamsala. The team consisted of 1 Astro-Science Practitioner, 3 doctors, and seven administrative staff. A total of 246 health consultations, 24 acupunctures and 9 oral-astro consultations were provided to the people by the team. Charity medicine amounting to Rs. 8,361.09 was given to the poor and needy patients. Leh, Ladakh International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed in Leh, Ladakh on 26 June, 2017. The event was jointly organized by Men-Tsee-Khang, Tibetan Primary Health Care Centre TPHCC, and Ladakh TCV School with the help of Tibetan Settlement Representatives.


June 2017 Dr. Tenzin Lhadon, Visiting Physician to H.H. the Dalai Lama gave an awareness talk on Drug abuse and its effects to the brain through Tibetan traditional way of Sowa-Rigpa. Pamphlets on Drug Abuse, its symptoms and effects were distributed to the audience. Men-Tsee-Khang would like to thank Phensum Tsokpa for funding the event. Kamrao & Sataun settlement Awareness programme on prevention of diseases was organized by Dekyiling branch clinic at Kamrao and Sataun Tibetan Settlements on 15 and 16 June, 2017. Dr. Sonam Lhamo gave talks on Cancer and hypertension along with question and answer sessions. More than 76 people attended the talks in Kamrao and Sataun settlements. The doctor provided 15 health consultations in Kamrao and 17 in Sataun. Dalhousie A restorative yoga workshop was organized at Dalhousie from 12 to 17 June, 2017. Mr. Tsering Dhondup, Yoga instructor, gave a 6-day course to 40+ Tibetan in maintaining a healthy lifesytle through exercise and diet. Shimla The Joint Director of Ayurved, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Sharma inaugurated the Deen Dayal Upadhaya Ayurvedic Hospital at Solan on 2 June, 2017. The hospital will include all the five systems of treatment: Ayurved, Yog, Unani, Sowa-Rigpa and Homeopathy. Around 150 people attended the function. Dr. Anju Gupta, Ayurved; Dr. Anand, yog; Dr. I.M. Hussain, Unani; and Dr. Jampa Wangmo, Sowa-Rigpa gave introduction on the respective systems of treatment. Dr. Jampa Wangmo, Chief Resident Doctor of Shimla branch clinic gave treatment to 26 patients in the hospital according to Sowa-Rigpa.

 Tibetan Medicine Courses in English Men-Tsee-Khang Tibetan Medical and Astro. College will conduct a 10-day level 1 & 2 Course in English on Tibetan Medicine from 11 to 21 September and 5-day level 3 Course in English on Tibetan Medicine from 22 to 27 September, 2017. Level 3 are specialized courses which offer two parallel and optional courses under the respective themes: “Healthy Mind and Healthy Body” and “Materia Medica and Pharmacology”. 5th Body, Mind and Life conference on “Prevention of Mental Disorder” will be held from 4 to 6 October, 2017 at Men-Tsee-Khang. This 3-day conference will bring together two scholars each from four different perspectives: Buddhist Psychology, Tibetan Medicine, Tibetan Astro-Science and Modern Science. Men-Tsee-Khang Wellness Camps

(Celebrating 101 Years of Public Health Service) Our Centenary outreach tours to Australia, USA East Coast/Canada, Singapore, Russia, Europe, Taiwan, USA West Coast and South America conducted between March 23, 2016 to March 23, 2017 had been a great success due to the efforts of various support groups. Above all, the encouragements we received and the experiences we gained, contributed to our initiating another world tour. Our tours to various places in India had also been a great success. We are conducting similar outreach tours (health consultations, oral-astro consultations, lectures/ workshops on Tibetan Medicine & Tibetan AstroScience, exhibition, sale of sorig & health products) to commemorate the 101 Years of Men-Tsee-Khang in Public Health Service. We have formed 6 groups who will visit USA East Coast/Canada, USA West Coast, Europe, Nordic Countries, United Kingdom and South America. Each group will comprise of 4-members (1 doctor, 1 Astro-Science Practitioner and 2-administrative staff). We are currently in the initial stage of planning/scheduling the tour dates.
