Terberg special vehicles maga zine 2012
Foreword
We are proud to present the first issue of Terberg Special Vehicles magazine. It shows our vehicles at work in over 90 countries. Our vehicles operate in ports, distribution centres, heavy industry, railway shunting yards, tunnelling sites and airports – both on and off-road. Our customers depend on these vehicles to keep their operations running, so they expect the highest performance and reliability and the lowest maintenance effort.
Fore word Over the past three years we have completely updated our factory at Benschop. The layout has been optimised and we have introduced new production methods. Consequently, we have increased our output, without increasing the footprint of our plant. Furthermore, our personnel now benefit from a much better working environment. Innovation is one of the core values behind our family-owned company. By investing continuously in engineering and development we can offer our customers the best combination of quality and performance. This is supported by a professional distributor network throughout the world. Together, these strengths provide a solid basis for customer satisfaction and the continuity of our company. Our design engineers are always improving existing designs and developing new ones. Last year we introduced the new generation of RT tractors. This year will see the introduction of a fully-electric YT tractor and our new Swap Body Carrier. These models are our response to new challenges in a rapidly changing world. A world in which Terberg aims for continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. George Terberg / Director

Gerard Verdam and Henri Jacobs:
the driving force behind the No. 1 in tractors Becoming the world leader in quality and innovation in the tractor market takes some doing. The Development Department is behind this success. There is always something new to see during a visit to Terberg’s think-tank where Gerard Verdam, Engineering & Production Manager, and Henri Jacobs, Technical Manager Terminals, work hard on maintaining Terberg’s leading position in the market.
4
As Gerard Verdam puts it: “Without innovation this business would not have a future.” As Head of Development he has been operating at the interface between creativity, commerce and engineering for decades. In his 35 years with the company, Gerard has been closely involved in practically the entire development cycle of our tractors. Gerard is still ultimately responsible for product development. However, as he is now also Production Manager, the day-to-day development efforts are managed by Henri Jacobs.

Terberg RT RoRo tractors (4x4 drive) and YT yard tractors (4x2) are widely used by major port operators worldwide. Their key reasons for choosing Terberg tractors are always the reliability and the low cost of ownership resulting from the high fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. Port operators with heavy RoRo cargo also appreciate the SafeNeck, which considerably increases safety when hauling heavy loads on steep ship’s ramps. We trust that these case studies give you a good idea of the port applications of our tractors.

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) Johor, Malaysia
PTP is a large and rapidly expanding container port on the river Pulai and benefits from the busy shipping routes in the area. The port has a capacity of around 8.4 million TEU per year. PTP owns 212 Terberg YT tractors, and one of their contractors operates another 60 on the same site. This makes PTP our largest customer in Malaysia. These tractors were locally assembled by Terberg Tractors Malaysia. In fact, the 1,000th Terberg tractor built in Malaysia was supplied to PTP in February 2011. We are confidently looking forward to further developments in this market.

Terberg YT, TT and RT tractors are used in many industries for transporting up to 375 tonnes Gross Combined Weight. Here the robustness and reliability of our products are highly valued. The ease of manoeuvring and the swivelling seats on some models are particularly useful when working in crowded yards. These are also valuable when operating inside buildings, where Euro 5 engines are required in the Netherlands. Our standard tractors are supplemented by the RT382 industrial tractor, whose fifth wheel lifting capacity of 45 tonnes is particularly useful in the steel industry. In addition, this unit is used for towing multitrailer trains. Our optional SafeNeck improves the weight distribution between the trailer and the tractor and can increase the load capacity up to 250% when operating on ramps and slopes.
IJTK The Netherlands IJTK provides on-site transport services for the Tata steelworks at IJmuiden. The company operates 10 Terberg 10x8 and 10x4 tipper trucks with large bodies for transporting raw materials and residues on the Tata site. These trucks operate 24/7 with heavy loads. IJTK also has 6 RT283 tractors and is about to purchase two more. These tractors are primarily used with Translifters and cassettes with a capacity of 110 tonnes to transport steel coils. The tractors are also used with other heavy trailers and special compact trailers for areas where there are space restrictions. All tractors operate 24/7. IJTK has chosen Terberg heavy tippers because of their expertise in developing heavy and

Shifting pa r c e l s b y the thousands Terberg YT yard tractors (4x2) are used as shunters (tugs) at many distribution centres where they have proven themselves to be more appropriate for trailer shunting than conventional road tractors. For example, they have an optimised driveline and gearbox, while their lifting fifth wheel saves time as trailers can be shunted without raising the landing legs. The high reliability and fuel efficiency of Terberg units come to the fore in these applications where they often have to work around the clock. Where permitted by local regulations, some operators also use these tractors for short trips on public roads. Operators using swap bodies appreciate the Terberg BC body carrier; it not only handles swap bodies very efficiently but can also tow semitrailers and drawbar trailers.
Robert Transport Canada
Robert Transport is one of Canada’s largest trucking companies with around 1,100 tractive units and 2,300 employees. The company is highly innovative and focussed on quality. Robert Transport also provide storage and distribution services (warehousing, order preparation, repacking, etc.). To improve quality and efficiency the company decided to look for an alternative to some of the tractors being used at their distribution centre and for cross-dock operations. On a visit to Europe, the company’s representatives visited Terberg and were favourably impressed by the quality of our products. Despite the higher initial cost than the other tractors, they recognised the advantages and decided to start by purchasing two of our YT182 4x2 tractors. After careful analysis of the Canadian emission regulations, Robert Transport and Terberg choose Mercedes OM924LA Tier 4i engines. These are four-cylinder units, unlike the six-cylinder units used in our other tractors. The company’s experiences with the first two tractors were positive and they have ordered a further four units for use at their customers’ sites. These will be significantly customised to meet Robert Transport’s requirements. The special features will include air-conditioned cabs, engine heaters for use in cold weather, speed limiters, etc.

Duvenbeck germany
Duvenbeck, with its headquarters in Germany, has long been in the top-five of European automotive logistics specialists. The company is at the forefront of integrated logistics in this sector and specialises in providing comprehensive logistics solutions. At the new Daimler factory in Kescemét, Hungary, Duvenbeck delivers components to site, undertakes some pre-assembly, and then supplies them just-in-time to the assembly line. The company uses a Mobiler tractor to transfer swap bodies delivered by rail to the yard or directly to the plant or warehouse. The Mobiler is a system of two arms fitted to a truck body which can extend sideways. It is used to transfer containers and swap bodies between rail and road vehicles without the need for cranes or other handling equipment. This makes it much easier to integrate rail and road logistics as intermodal transfers are no longer restricted to dedicated terminals. Mobiler was originally developed

The company’s Truck Division has built up a unique reputation since it started 60 years ago by converting American ex-army vehicles.
complete custom vehicles are built, on the basis of our modular system. Terberg Benschop builds trucks with three, four and five axles and GVWs from 20 to 80 tonnes. The chassis and suspension are all built in-house. These units are fitted with high quality components from renowned manufacturers, such as Volvo cabs and engines, Meritor axles and automatic or manual transmissions. circle of customers for many years.
Customers from the start Terberg has been building custom trucks for decades. The fact that some of our first customers (Van Bentum, Buko and Mourik) are still buying trucks from us several generations later underlines the quality of our products and the confidence our customers have in them.
SPECIAL projects Terberg produces a range of specialist trucks, one example being our standard tipper trucks for rough terrain applications in 6 x 4 to 10 x 8 configurations. We also build fully custom-made vehicles for specialist applications. Each of these vehicles is designed and produced in close consultation with the customer and the suppliers of the specialist equipment (drilling rig, crane, etc.) fitted to it. We also assess the requirements for the country where the truck will be used and arrange official approval for use on public roads (homologation). On-site transporter Magnox South, Bradwell, Essex, England The two Magnox reactors on this site were shut down in 2002 after generating electricity for 40 years. The site is now being decommissioned. Some of the waste handling operations include the lifting and transport of heavy cast iron containers. Initially it was assumed that the site roads would have to be upgraded to accommodate the heavy vehicles required. Instead, it was decided to invest in a Terberg FM2850 with a 30 tonne FASSI crane. The sophisticated suspension system of this truck divides the load effectively between its fourteen wheels and five axles, allowing it to operate on the existing loads. As a result, there was no need to improve the roads, saving significant time and costs. The truck can carry both standard 20 foot containers and the dedicated cast iron containers, which are positioned and locked in place to ensure the correct axle loadings. The crane can lift 30 tonnes at 3.5 metres radius and 10.3 tonnes at 11.3 metres. Other key features are that the truck can manoeuvre within the restricted space in the buildings and place

terberg people Interview - Arie Vuurens
Arie Vuurens:
On the road for training Terberg Magazine interviewed Arie Vuurens, After-sales Engineer. Arie joined the company aged 15, immediately after leaving school, and is still working at Terberg 47 years later. During the course of his career he has taken many evening courses in engineering and management. He started out working in production and eventually was appointed as After-Sales Manager, specialising in providing customer support and trouble-shooting. He has now moved into a training role.
26
SPECIAL VEHICLES
Arie told us about this current role: “I travel extensively to the US, Australia, Africa, etc. to give on-site training courses. Normally, I give a five-day course to service technicians and show them how to maintain the engine, electrical systems, hydraulics and pneumatics. Fortunately, all the parts are readily accessible, which makes both training and maintenance much easier. I also give half-day courses to drivers to show them how to get the best out of their Terberg tractor.” Our customers appreciate the training as it helps them to keep their fleet in excellent operating condition, and at the lowest cost. They also value the quick delivery of spare parts and our after-sales support. In fact, Arie commented: “We have to sell the first tractor, but after that our after-sales support and the favourable comments from the drivers usually sell the next tractor, and the next one,….” Although Arie now works mostly as a trainer, he still finds time for other pre-sales and after-sales assignments. For example, he recently visited a customer in Asia where some axles showed an unusual wear pattern. Arie is now investigating the case and thinks it might have something to do with the site conditions. He also visited a customer in the region to assess a site regarding its suitability for using our tractors.
Arie commented that he really enjoys all the travelling, meeting people, and seeing Terberg tractors being used in ports and distribution centres around the world. He noted:
“Our customers really appreciate the training we provide and apparently we do that better than the competition.”

Marti Tunnelbau AG, a Swiss tunnelling contractor, has been using Terberg RT tractors for well over ten years for on-site transport at the sites of two major construction projects. They chose the RTs as they have lower fuel and maintenance costs than road transport tractors and also last several times longer under arduous site conditions. The resulting lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is essential to them since a site may operate for more than a decade.

Finally, the unit has a significantly lower environmental impact than road haulage tractors. To deal with long steep downward slopes, the RT382 is fitted with a Jacobs engine brake to prevent overheating of the retarder and conventional brakes. At one of the project sites, this engine brake allows the vehicle to descend 12% slopes with a length of more than 6 km with ease. In short, the RT382 dumper

One of our customers asked for a better solution for hauling loads over 80 tonnes up and down RoRo ramps. Although there are several options for this, such as using heavier tractors or fitting the tractors with ballast, none addresses the underlying issue: the poor distribution of the trailer weight between the front and rear axles of the tractor. This is because normally the load is applied to the fifth wheel towards the rear of the tractor and also because the fifth wheel has to be lifted to raise the rolltrailer off the ground.

re-engineering the production line Interview - Theo Rosendal
Project Manager Theo Rosendal on the new production lines:
“The project has fulfilled all expectations Surprisingly, the economic downturn of a few years ago brought some benefits for Terberg Benschop. The temporary drop-off in orders provided us with breathing space to overhaul our production lines and prepare for future growth. Project Manager Theo Rosendal saw it as a great opportunity to apply all aspects of his automotive engineering and management expertise.
