TERME DOBRNA IN THE PAST... Terme Dobrna is the oldest working Slovenian thermal spa with over 610 years of tradition. In the very early days the mild climate without fog or cold winds attracted the first settlers. Then in prehistoric times, a fortified settlement was erected on the nearby hillock Gradišče. 500 Celtic coins found in archaeological excavations are a testimony to his early settlement. Archaeological findings also prove that Dobrna and its thermal water were well known by the Celts and Romans. The thermal spring was known by the first Slovenian settlers as well. They named the upper part of their settlement ‘Toplice’ (Spa) and the lower part ‘Dobrna’ after the pedunculate oak (in Slovene: ‘dob’), which is characteristic for the wide surrounding area. The Dobrna spa and thermal spring were first mentioned in written records in 1403 when they became the property of Sigmund and Andrej Dobrnski. In 1624, a new era started for the spa.

4

Matija Gačnik erected the first health building and to commemorate this event, he had a marble plaque that still exists today, built into the wall above the swimming pool. With the Gačnik family becoming the owners of the spa, an era of prosperity began for Dobrna. By 1814, when the property came into possession of Franc Ksaverij Kajetan, the spa was already known far and wide. Baron Dienersberg tore down the old middle part of the Gačnik spa centre, built a new one and connected it to the side wings. In 1848, the spa was purchased by Count Ivan Hoyos who thoroughly tackled the landscaping and construction works. He built a new wing with a beautiful new spa hall, a chapel and a swimming pool for visitors and the poor. He also constructed other buildings and arranged paths and resting places in the park. In the vicinity of the enclosed spring, Hoyos had five individual baths constructed.

Hoyos ran the spa himself with the help of his wife. The most important person at the spa was the spa doctor – Dr Gustav Kottowitz, who issued the first spa tourist guide in 1850. There, he describes the healing properties of thermal water, discusses cases of extraordinary recoveries and the benefits that can be enjoyed by the guests. Around 1855, Dr Kottowitz constructed the Villa Kottowitz, today known as Villa Higiea. Count Hoyos was very enterprising but also thoughtless; unfortunately, even he did not know the amount of debts he had incurred. This is why he went bankrupt, and the spa was purchased by the Styrian country states in 1858. Despite his personal failure, Count Ivan Hoyos is recognised as the original founder of the current Dobrna spa. The country spa administration managed the property based on what Count Hoyos started and a new period of prosperity began for the spa. In 1872, the Swiss

... AND TODAY court was constructed, today known as Hotel Park. Due to the spa’s sudden growth, a new modern hotel with a thermal swimming pool, a health centre, a restaurant, a cafÊ, and other rooms were built in 1979 on the green between the settlement and the spa complex. Ever since the first findings, water from the Dobrna hot springs has been used for medical purposes to treat various diseases, to strengthen the body and to improve the overall physical and mental fitness of individuals and groups. Ever since 1542, thermal water has been used as an ideal means of treating gynaecological and urological illnesses, rheumatic and similar illnesses, as well as diseases and injuries of the motor system. This is how Terme Dobrna became known around the world for its healing effects and health benefits. The most notable guests included senior officials and important persons, including Maria Theresa, Bishop Anton Martin Slomťek, Louis Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon I), writer Karl May and Count Hoyosh.

Today, Terme Dobrna is a successful, modern and dynamic health resort and tourist centre, which combines the gifts of nature, tradition, hospitality, professionalism and contemporary medicine. In our Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Centre, you will be taken care of by first class doctors and medical staff with the support of certified physical therapists who will provide you with individual, discreet and professional treatment to help you obtain the best results in gynaecology, urology, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cardiology, psychotherapy, ophthalmology and aesthetic surgery. We help men and women in all stages of fertility, and at the same time protect them from the most common lifestyle diseases. We are known as the leading centre offering help with reproductive system disorders, infertility and incontinence, and diagnostics in the field of gynaecological and urologic diseases in connection with oncology and neurologic conditions.

We are the first health resort in Slovenia to receive the prestigious international accreditation for quality in the field of medicine DNV-GL. This accreditation certifies that our patients are being treated in accordance with the standards of the highest level of safety. We are also active in medical scientific development. Our Institute for Applied Research in Medical Rehabilitation (IARMR) cooperates with educational and research institutions, as well as the leading pharmaceutical companies. In the tourism segment, we are recognizable by our offer of sustainable tourism. SPA PARK The arrangement of the spa park in Dobrna dates back approximately to 1820. The owner of the spa at the time – Baron Franc Ksaverij Kajetan Dienersberg – arranged the chestnut avenue, which connects the spa complex with Dobrna in a straight line. North of this axis at the time were farmlands, mostly held by the Novak family. They successfully connected their farming activities with catering, and regularly attracted the spa guests. South of this axis, a lawn slowly gave way to the forest. Between the avenue and the northern path that wound from the bottom of the low hillocks towards the Novak lands was at first a levelled grassy surface broken only by the channel of the then unruly Topliški potok (Spa Stream). However, within the next few decades, new parks and pleasure grounds emerged within the spa hollow. The surrounding area of the new spa buildings continued to be arranged as a park, and by mid century, an organized system of gardens was connected to the main park axis. The years 1847 and 1848 proved to be excellent, as the management of the spa was taken over by Count Hoyos. In the woods above the spa stream, an extensive network of paths with smaller and larger circular flower beds was arranged. In the 1870s, when the spa grew almost to today’s extent, flower beds joined the stands of trees, especially along the Lawn House and Hotel Park.

8

In the further development of the park, we encounter an increasing emphasis of a combined system of communication. The stands of trees are complemented with groups of decorative shrubs and flower beds; the once monochromatic green is transformed into a colourful pallet of flower carpets with selected accents of trees and fruit bushes, all on a pervading background of hundredyear-old trees. Due to the different kinds of growth, especially the trees, a walk through the Dobrna park offers unimagined experiences in any season to all nature lovers. Apart from the wild chestnuts that are predominant everywhere, there are also maple, birch, catalpa, cypress, weeping European copper beech, blue spruce, sycamore, white poplar, bitter oak, ‘dob’ oak, yew, American arborvitae, asunaro, western hemlock, etc. There are a lot of everyday local trees, but some trees deserve special attention. There is a white poplar near the spa centre boasting a circumference of 515 cm, and is the third largest among the known poplars in Slovenia. Close behind it, there is a sycamore near the Hotel Park with a circumference of 464 cm, and a cypress in the middle of the park with a circumference of 280 cm. There is enough beauty to satisfy even the most pampered lovers of tamed nature.

PSYCHOTHERAPY CLINIC – COUNSELLING One of the most precious features our bodies have is sight. That is why it is important to take care of the eyes, just as we take care of our body as a whole. Our eyes suffer greatly on a daily basis because of the increased use of computers, air pollution and other factors. Hereditary factors can worsen our condition and make our eyes more susceptible to diseases. In Terme Dobrna, you receive comprehensive treatment for your eyes’ health. We carry out precautionary examinations to make sure the diseases have not occurred, and curative examinations to advise on treatment and treat medical conditions.

In the quiet, relaxing and private environment of our psychotherapy clinic, you can openly talk to someone who will listen, help and advise you. Our renowned psychotherapist Leonarda Lunder, M.D., uses a personal in-depth approach to understand your problems, which allows her to help you face and solve them.

Lymphedema is a condition of an inadequate function of the lymphatic system, which shows as a swelling of the soft tissue because of the protein-rich extracellular fluid. Our highly educated doctors and physiotherapists hold certificates for the implementation of an integrated treatment of lymphedema by the Dr Vodder Method, which is still the most effective method for treatment in the world.

ACCOMMODATION AND SERVICES

Accepting ourselves the way we are is one of the hardest challenges we face. Lifestyle and ageing cause various changes to our bodies and can lead to health problems and injuries. This leads to poor self-image, low selfesteem and anxiety, which limits your capacity to successfully cope with everyday situations. In Terme Dobrna, we want you to feel good about yourself, which is why we offer a comprehensive, personalized and discreet approach. We cooperate with the Fabjan Aesthetic Surgery, which offers plastic surgery and cosmetic dentistry services.

Only a small part of the building we see today is the one Matija Gačnik built in 1624. The thermal pool has since been renovated but you can still see a preserved marble plate from Gačnik’s times. The pool with its present appearance from 1908 was built according to the bathing rules at that time, when men and women used separate baths. The hall that was built in 1847 was painted almost 30 years later. Renovations on the central building were completed in 1935 when the third floor and the left wing were added.

The room with 10 marble baths was adapted and added in 1874. The main hall of the Zdraviliški dom spa today hosts elite cultural and entertainment events.

Idylical nature is enriched with the crystal clear water springing from below the rock, the Ledenica cave and the Drenovec Falls. When we arrive at the farm marked by a mighty old linden tree and a wrought iron gate we can enjoy a wonderful view of pristine nature. The scene is enriched with animals that are freely roaming in the fenced farm of 13 hectares. The most important features of our farm are the domestic atmosphere and the direct contact of the visitor with nature and the animals, which can be fed or quietly observed during a conversation or a snack. Because the visibility of the farm has increased, we have extended our offer and added an ethnological and hunting museum; renovated the old hayrack and added a large covered area; arranged an outdoor picnic area with a playground; constructed an outdoor sports field for various sports activities, etc. In the summer season, the homestead is open on Fridays between 4 pm and 8 pm and Saturdays and Sundays between 10 am and 8 pm. By prior arrangement, the homestead is open any day of the week.

Anna’s PATH The path was named after Anna, the former owner of the Šumej homestead who lived in the house with a preserved black kitchen until 2005. The path runs through the hilly areas between the torrential Dobrnica and the river Hudinja flowing from Vitanje. There are no joined settlements here, only groups of houses or individual farms situated between orchards and vineyards. You will meet the locals that can tell you a great deal about the way of life in this part of the Dobrna Municipality. From the centre of Dobrna, the path leads along the road past the ruins of the Ružička mansion, towards Hudičev graben (Devil’s Ravine), past the Gutenek mansion (a former brewery) to the Kneipp trough with crystal clear water springing from below the rock. From the Ledenica cave (Ice Cave) and the Drenovec Falls, the path climbs steeply alongside the torrential Drenovec Creek falls to a clearing suitable for a picnic. Along a grassy road, the path arrives at the Marovšek farm with a beautifully arranged picnic area.

Castle Komenda of Polzela

23 km

25min 30min

This used to be a strategically important building owned by the Helenstein knights from Polzela. It was mentioned for the first time in 1149 through its owners. Throughout the centuries, the castle’s destiny changed several times. In the 13th century, it passed into the hands of the Sovereign Order of Malta. During the next 500 years, the Order had a significant impact on the life of the people in Polzela. During that time, people started calling the castle Komenda, which means an administrative unit of the Order estate. In addition to the administrative unit in Polzela, there were another two Maltese administrative units in today’s Slovenia – in Melje at Maribor and in Komenda at Kamnik. Among the three administrative units, the one in Polzela was the strongest and financially supported the other two in the middle of the 16th century. After the departure of the Sovereign Order of Malta, the castle fell into disrepair. This important cultural and historical monument again shone in all its glory after a complete renovation in 2011. With the renovation, the municipality acquired several new premises suitable for the development of tourism, cultural activities and social life. Above the stairs at the main entrance, there is a bronze plaque in the wall with the portrait of France Prešeren and the following inscription: “Between 1817 and 1819, the poet France Prešeren used to come to this Komenda to visit his uncle Anton Muhovec, the parish priest of Polzela.” In addition to the guided tours of the castle (the oldest building in Polzela – the Romanesque tower, the Gothic room – the wedding hall, the oldest horizontal hops drying room in Slovenia, renovated within the framework of the Eco museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing Industry in Slovenia, and the exhibition of the Sovereign Order of Malta), we can also organize formal castle weddings, conferences, seminars, meetings, trainings and birthday parties with various themes for children. In the Malteški hram (Maltese Temple) restaurant, you can let your taste buds enjoy excellent food and renowned wines from the wine cellar. Drive along the slopes of Pohorje through the town of Slovenske Konjice to the idyllic St John the Baptist Valley where the mysterious Žiče Charterhouse is located. It was founded by Ottokar III of Styria, the Margrave of Styria, of the house of Traungau, who wanted to create a home for the Carthusian monks from the Grande Chartreuse in France. It was built after 1160 in the image of the French charterhouses, which means that there were two monasteries. In the upper monastery – the Žiče Charterhouse with a large church dedicated to St John the Baptist – a cloister in which monks lived according to the strict rule of the Carthusians. The lay monks lived in the lower monastery in the village of Špitalič. The famous church of the Visitation of Mary is known for its unique Romanesque portal, which is among the oldest in Slovenia. The monks engaged in milling, glass-making, brick-making and other handicrafts. In 1782, Emperor Joseph II abolished the Žiče Charterhouse, which caused the ordered life to decline. Today, the Žiče Charterhouse is a cultural, historic and tourist attraction. At the entrance to the monastery, Gastuž is located – the oldest inn in today’s Slovenia, existing since 1467. In the Žiče Charterhouse, there is a herb garden, a herb exhibition, a shop, tastings, medieval banquets and workshops.

25min

Velenje, which is about fifteen minutes away, is the administrative, political, economic and cultural centre of the Šalek Valley, also known as the valley of castles. The town developed at the foot of the steep hill with Velenje castle at the top. The castle was first mentioned in 1250. The town started as a small mining settlement, which grew after the Second World War and became one of the most beautiful modern architectural monuments in Slovenia. You simply have to see the House of Minerals in the old town, the Velenje castle and the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia, where they will take you to the depths of the mine with the oldest lift in Europe. Velenje, its surroundings and the old town offer countless possibilities for lovers of nature, culture and events. If you like to relax on terraces by the river, read a book near running water, soak your feet in water or enjoy an ice cream under the trees, Velenje is the right choice for you. Since the renovation of the promenade, the town offers a modern and attractive area for walks, meetings and gatherings. The new town promenade emphasizes and uses the natural qualities of the area, with modern urban equipment complementing the arrangement.

Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia In the outer part of the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia, we want to provide a more detailed picture of the development of coal mining in Slovenia by walking the visitors through the ten thematic groups. Under the guidance of the guide who will greet you at the “register office”, the visitors will descend far into the depths of the shaft. Before that, you will put on miner’s clothes, a coat and a helmet and take a miner’s lunch with you. In the next hour and a half in the underground tunnels, you will enjoy a vivid representation of how miners worked in the past and how it is carried out today. The museum provides multimedia information in Slovenian, Croatian, German, English and Italian.

36

We will show you the story of coal mining in the past and today with simulations and exhibits in an authentic environment. The doors of the mining lift shut behind you and you are already in the middle of a real lignite mine. Before entering the modern part of the museum, you will refresh yourself with a miner’s lunch in the deepestlying cafeteria in Slovenia and probably in Europe as well. In the second part of the museum, which includes about 10 scenes, the path will lead you through mechanized underground areas from the last decades of development of the Velenje coal mine. At the end of your visit, you will catch a ride on the underground railway.

Through the fields of green gold, the path will take you to a real karst cave, which is more than 3 million years old. Jama Pekel (Hell Cave) lies in the middle of the Ponikve Karst Park, covered with forests and fields. It is one of the largest tourist karst caves in Štajerska and is recognizable by the distinct stone entrance that resembles the image of the devil, which is where the name of the cave comes from. The upper floor of the cave is extremely beautiful with its dripstone cave and a tunnel with bats. We get to know the water karst cave and the dry karst cave because the cave consists of two floors. In the lower part of the cave, the path takes you along Peklenščica (the Devil’s Stream) to the main sight in the cave – the highest underground waterfall in Slovenia (4 metres). In the upper dry part of the cave, you can enjoy diverse forms of stalagmites and stalactites.

With its appearance, Celje unobtrusively combines ancient and medieval heritage with a modern urban environment. The preserved cobbled Roman streets, mighty castle buildings and the remains of medieval walls in the town centre provide proof of the town’s rich history, reaching back to the time of the Celts and Romans. Celje is most often associated with its nickname – the Princely Town (Knežje mesto ). The Celje nobles undoubtedly left the largest mark in our history, gave power to the town and carried the glory of the three gold stars throughout Europe. You can enjoy the cobbled streets along the medieval walls, the mighty frontages of the buildings and the pleasant squares. A walk through the town park and the landscaped footpaths along the Savinja river to the Griček hillock will refresh you and give you new strength and momentum for your difficult daily life. In the town centre, you can see two churches – St Cecilia’s Church and the Church and Home of St Joseph. Other notable attractions include the Prince’s Mansion, the archaeological cellar with the exhibition Celeia – a town under a town, which will charm you with the beauty of ancient Celeia, The People’s Loan Society – the most notable building in Celje that was constructed before the Second World War, and the Old Langraviate Building with the famous Celje ceiling. To the south-east, you can see the water tower with Roman plates and a plaque integrated into the tower with a sign indicating the level of water during the flood in 1672. With a little effort, you can climb Miklavški hrib (Nicholas Hill) or Joževov hrib (Joseph’s Hill) or take the famous Pelikan path to the Old Castle of Celje, which is returning to its former glory through constant renovations in the last few years.

Castle of Celje The Old Castle of Celje lies on a narrow rocky overhang and towers above the Celje town centre and the Savinja river. The original castle was built in the second half of the 12th century by the Counts of Vovberg from Carinthia who had Celje and its surroundings in their possession up to their deaths in 1322. After a decade of battles, the castle came into the hands of their heirs (1333), the Lords of Žovnek, later the Counts of Celje. The castle still remains the largest castle in Slovenia. Friderik’s Tower is the most famous part of the castle. With its almost three

metre thick walls, it served as the last refuge from attackers. On the first floor of the 23-metre tower, there was a jail. Above, there were rooms intended to store weapons and other equipment. In summer, the Castle of Celje hosts parties and events. Forces of nature sculpted the Logar Valley deep within the heart of the KamnikSavinja Alps and surrounded it with mountains more than 2000 m high (Krofička, Ojstrica, Planjava, Brana, Turska gora, Rinke, etc.). Today’s picturesque appearance of the Logar Valley was created by a glacier during the last ice age. The valley is 7 km long and has an average width of 250 m. It consists of three parts. Log and Plest feature beautiful meadows, while Kot is mostly covered in forests. The area beyond the green curtain of the forest reverberates with the magnificent roar of the Rinka Falls.

ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS IN AND AROUND DOBRNA

The beauty of the Logar Valley is reflected in the pristine state of the environment and the numerous natural features that are of great interest to nature lovers. The farms which have shaped the cultural landscape through the centuries, have also left their mark on the region. Harmony between man and nature is a value that is rarely found today. The Logar Valley was declared a landscape park in 1987 because of these very values. The park measures 203 km2 and extends from the valley to the upper ridges of the mountains. It builds its image upon naturefriendly sustainable development and a high-quality tourist offer. Due to its excellent location, it serves as a great starting point for many interesting trips to the peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

Path through the Logar Valley The path through the Logar Valley is a natural history and ethnographic path leading through the marvellous corners of unspoilt nature in the landscape park. Numerous natural and ethnographic sights seen along the path are sure to catch the eye of every visitor. The path also brings people closer to nature. You can choose to explore the path and the tranquil imagery of the park by yourself or you can opt for the services of local guides that will guide you through the wonderful world of nature and point out numerous interesting features. The second source of the Savinja River, mighty boulders, a woodcutter’s and a charcoal-burner’s hut, a hide and a giant juniper are some of them. The path ends at the Rinka Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Slovenia, where you will be rewarded with a refreshing embrace of a fine mist. It takes about 2 hours to walk the entire length of the path. You can also join the path anywhere along the valley.

The Rinka Falls The Savinja stream springs from several sources under the Okrešelj Basin, after which it flows over a series of small step-like falls and rapids to the cliff-like edge of the glaciated Logarska Dolina Valley. From here it pours over the Orlovo Gnezdo rock-face into the natural amphitheatre that forms the valley’s upper end. This magnificent 90-metre-high arc of water is Rinka, the highest single and unbroken waterfall in Slovenia which, because of its enormous size and beauty, was proclaimed a natural monument in 1987. The waterfall is the most beautiful and the most visited part of the Path through the Logar Valley. The mountain path runs past the waterfall to the Frischauf Hut on Okrešelj and into the high mountain range.

Attractions and tours: • The Rinka Falls • The Palenk Falls • The Brložnica Falls and Cave • Okrešelj National Park • Wooden granaries (kašte) • Charcoal burning – charcoaler’s hut

Škocjan Caves Regional Park

157 km 1h 30min

1h 45min

The Škocjan Caves Regional Park is located in the picturesque Karst near Divača. It is one of the three regional parks in Slovenia that are currently protected and is a true open-air museum. It represents a typical karst environment with the largest number of karst features in one place. The regional park combines the system of caves, collapsed caves and cultural monuments into a typical karst “architecture”. All this led to the Škocjan Caves being entered on the list of UNESCO world natural and cultural heritage sites in 1986. The system of the Škocjan Caves consists of a number of individual caves, tunnels, collapsed caves, natural bridges and sinkholes. It was created by the Reka river, which runs 50 km on the surface and then disappears into the karst underground here, creating 5.8 km of cave tunnels over time. The protected area of the park also provides a rich cultural heritage that is reflected in the typical karst architecture; numerous ethnological, historical and art-historical monuments and several archaeological sites that keep extremely important findings since the Neolithic Period. Experience the world heritage and enter one of the largest underground canyons in Europe or follow the Reka river on its way through the first sinkhole into the ground.

Mysterious world of the Škocjan Caves When visiting the Škocjan Caves, you will learn about the Reka river’s works of art and the branched system of cave passages that together form a unique perspective of a once almost inaccessible underground world. The history of researching the system of the Škocjan Caves is extremely diverse, with interest beginning to grow in the 19th century. The path for visitors begins in Paradiž (Paradise) with a truly breathtaking view of the most beautifully preserved stalactite formations. You will continue to Podorna Dvorana (the Rockfall Cave), which contains piles of river sediments. In Velika Dvorana (the Great Hall), you can enjoy a view of up to 15 m high stalagmites called giants.

44

Dvorana Orgel (the Organ Cave) will play a quiet prelude to the booming of the river in Šumeča Jama (the Murmuring Cave). In Šumeča Jama, you can enjoy an open view of the underground canyon of the Reka river. Continue to the Cerkvenik Bridge, which crosses the river canyon at a height of 45 m, just where the Reka river enters the Hankejev Kanal (the Hanke Channel). After visiting the Müller and the Svetin cave, we climb to the Dvorana Ponvic (the Limestone Pool Cave), which is a distinctive feature of the Škocjan Caves. We will see sunlight again in the Schmidl Hall, which opens to Velika Dolina (the Great Valley). The Škocjan Caves have probably the largest cave in Europe with a cross-section of 12,000 m2 (1.2 hectares).

With its immense natural beauty, Bled, together with its surroundings, ranks among the most beautiful alpine destinations. It is famous for its mild, healing climate and thermal lake water. It offers everything visitors could ever want. There is a small island with a tiny church in the middle of a beautiful and clean blue lake, surrounded by a lush forest, offering a splendid view of Bled Castle and the Julian Alps. The town as we know it today originated from the villages of Želeče, Grad, Rečica, Zagorica and Mlino, and its history goes far back to the past. In 2004, Bled celebrated a thousand years since the first mention of the town, which is today known mainly for its tourist offers. The idyllic town by the lake became a popular resort and was regularly visited by well-known people, such as Tito and members of the Karađorđević dynasty. Bled was the first town in the Slovenian territory with an asphalt road.

Bled Castle

Lake Bohinj

Perched atop a steep cliff rising 130 metres above the glacial Lake Bled, is a symbol of Bled and Slovenia – Bled Castle. The image of the castle forming a dramatic backdrop to the romantic island and the church on it has earned the resort worldwide recognition through the centuries. The castle terraces offer spectacular views of the lake and the island. Medieval documents refer to Bled with its German name Veldes. In terms of written documents, Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia. In 1004, Albuin of Brixen received it from the German king Henry II as a gift for supporting the consolidation of the German authority.

Lake Bohinj with its surroundings is one of the main Slovenian natural attractions. It lies in the Triglav National Park, enclosed by the beautiful Julian Alps, and is the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia. Lake Bohinj is located in a glacial valley and it contains almost 100 million cubic metres of water – according to an old Bohinj joke: no more than a bucket if it is large enough. Lake Bohinj is perfect for water activities all year round – from swimming, boating, wind surfing, kayaking or canoeing, fishing and diving in the warmer months, to (sometimes) even ice skating in winter. Visitors can also take a wonderful tourist boat ride or simply go for a relaxing walk along the shore.

In 1952, an organized professional renovation of the castle was started, designed by the architect Tone Bitenc, student of Jože Plečnik. During reconstruction, Bled Castle was adapted in a more modern manner to support tourist visits and a museum.

The Lipica Stud Farm is one of the oldest stud farms in the world and the birthplace and ‘cradle’ of the Lipizzaner horses – one of the oldest horse breeds. The over 400-year-tradition of breeding these white horses has been preserved to the present day in the centre of the unique Karst landscape that represents one of the most beautiful natural and cultural monuments of Slovenia, which distinctly marked Lipica as we know it today. In the incredible natural surroundings, amidst fairytale meadows in the shade of oak and chestnut trees, beautiful and charming white horses await you. The most amazing sight is when they gracefully gallop across the meadows in a group. If you visit when young Lipizzaners are born, you can see that they are born black and only over time turn white. A black adult Lipizzaner is really rare. Experience the world of the white horse in the most intimate way through guided tours of the rich cultural and natural heritage of the stud farm, viewing performances and training by the Classical Riding School, taking carriage rides around the estate and taking riding courses for adults.

The German name of Graz derived from the Slovenian word “Gradec”, which means Little Castle in Slovenian and probably refers to a small town. The Styrian capital with its roots dating back to the Roman age lies on both sides of the Mur. It is the second largest city in Austria.

The Schlossberg hill (Castle Hill) dominates in the heart of the city. You can reach it from the old town by climbing the zigzag Gothic stairs or taking the funicular. If you decide to walk to the top of the hill, you will see a special statue of a dog on the way. Legend says that in 1481, the dog prevented the kidnapping of Kunigunde, the Emperor’s daughter, by barking. Only the clock tower remained untouched from the former fort on the plateau and is now seen as the symbol of the old town. Since 2003, the new symbol of the city has been the Kunsthaus on the left bank of the Mur river, which looks like a giant blue bubble. If you take a walk to the river, you will see a marvellous construction in the middle of the river in the shape of a half-open shell, which is connected to both banks by two pedestrian bridges. At first, this was meant to be a temporary project of the European Capital of Culture 2003. Now, you can relax there with a drink and watch performances in the open theatre, while children can have fun in the playground. You must not forget to see the Gothic Graz Cathedral, a real treasury of beautifully preserved frescoes, and the immense mausoleum at its side, the resting place of Emperor Ferdinand II. Together, these buildings are the jewel of Graz. In the Styrian Armoury, you can enjoy the extraordinary 32,000 pieces of historical weapons and military equipment, exhibited on four floors. Seeing such a collection, made mostly from iron, you will probably wonder how come it did not start to rust after such a long period of time. The reason for this is that the armoury was carefully planned, taking rusting into account. The floor, the walls and the ceilings are made from wood, which absorbs moisture and prevents rusting. Before you tour the town hall and enter the courtyard, read the Rumortafeln. This plaque from 1588 forbids commotions, the use of swords, knives or daggers and disrespectful behaviour in the building. Upon entering, you will probably – like most tourists – stop and enjoy your first view of the spacious courtyard with Renaissance arcades on all three floors. Here, you will have the opportunity to attend various cultural and social events held throughout the year.

ACTIVITIES AND TRIPS IN AND AROUND DOBRNA

Architecture-wise, Graz offers Renaissance courtyards and provincial baroque palaces complemented by modern designs. For that reason, UNESCO declared the old town centre as world cultural heritage in 1999. The reputation of being a lively, modern cultural place has earned Graz the title of Cultural Capital of Europe 2003, for the first time in Austria. This is possible through the strong cultural infrastructure of the city; however, the unique flair of the city on the Mur river has decisively contributed to the success of the Cultural Capital Project.

Legend has it that after a brave ban returned from battle, he asked a girl named Mandi to grab (zagrabi) water from the spring. Because of this, the city was named Zagreb and the spring was named Manduševac. It is not a coincidence that the tourist slogan of Zagreb is Zagreb, the city with a million hearts because more than a quarter of the entire Croatian population lives there. Archaeological findings dating back to the Stone Age show that the Zagreb area was very popular. In time, the city became the cultural, economic, political and administrative centre of the Republic of Croatia. On the main square, you can see Zagreb Cathedral, the most important church in Zagreb, which was constructed predominantly in the Neogothic architectural style. The cathedral now accepts more than 5,000 people and is the largest church and the tallest building in the country. Its two 108 m high bell towers, built in the Renaissance style from the 17th century, were used as lookout points in the time of the Ottoman Empire. Despite the red colour that can be seen all over the city centre when taking a walk, blue is the main city colour. Buses, trams and the funicular are all coloured blue. The funicular takes us to the top of Gradec or Gornji Grad (Upper Town) to one of the most famous promenades in Zagreb, which provides a marvellous view of the city centre and the brick roofs that slowly change with the distance from the old town. The city is adorned with greens, large parks, avenues, music pavilions, fountains, statues and blooming flower beds all the way from Donji grad (Lower Town) and the main railway station to the Ban Jelačić Square (the main square). Radićeva Ulica (Radić Street) leads from the largest square in the city and a popular meeting place for locals to Gornji Grad through the only preserved stone gates from the Middle Ages. Not far away, St Mark’s Square is located with the St Mark’s Church, which is known for its brightly coloured brick roof with two coats of arms. One belongs to the city of Zagreb, while the other represents three Croatian regions. If you are in the vicinity of the square or the Strossmayer promenade around noon, beware! Do not let the loud bang from the nearby Lotršćak Tower frighten you – it has been operating for more than a century. The Mirogoj cemetery is also worth visiting – it is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe. If all the attractions, scenic spots, artistically arranged parks, shopping centres, gourmet restaurants, fascinating buildings with numerous museums, theatres and the ballet and opera house in the city centre have not convinced you, you can enjoy a marvellous zoo just outside the city centre.

Everyone knows that the most common greeting CIAO comes from the Italian language, but few people also know that it comes specifically from Venice. There, canals replace streets and boats replace cars, lorries, buses and other means of transport. Venice was the home of the biggest lover of all time and the central hub of trade routes for several centuries. Now, here the culture, architecture and history are densely concentrated in a small area, so that even some of the smallest buildings contain masterpieces of artists. The attractions you simply have to see include St Mark’s Square and St Mark’s Basilica, which were named after Mark the Evangelist. His symbol, the winged lion, was kept as the symbol and the coat of arms of the city. Next to the basilica, there is an almost 100 m high bell tower – the highest in Venice – and the Doge’s Palace, a very important building in the Gothic style. Next to the palace, the Bridge of Sighs – “Ponte dei Sospiri” – is located. It was named after the last sighs of prisoners who crossed the bridge and saw Venice for the last time. In the square, you can see “Procuratie Vecchie”, once the facilities of the Venice administration, and “Procuratie Nuove”. Around the square, you can enjoy the view of the arcades with numerous shops and cafés. The most famous cafés are Caffe Florian and Gran caffe Quadri. Nearby, there is a renaissance tower with a clock that contains a special mechanism that activates twice a year, making the figures of the Magi appear. From the market, you can walk in any direction through the maze of streets that are intertwined with canals and bridges, with romantic black gondolas with brightly coloured seats passing below. Take a peek into the authentic Venice shops. You can find precious jewellery, various ornaments from Murano glass, Venice masks, fashionable clothes by renowned brands and much more. You will also see omnipresent restaurants with authentic Italian dishes and cafés with true Italian espresso. In the oldest part of the city, you will find the famous Rialto bridge spanning over the Grand Canal with water transport. The Rialto was designed by Antonio da Ponte who outsmarted even Michelangelo with his idea. If you decide to take a water taxi to the St Mark’s Square, you can see the home of Elton John, the Il Redentore church, the Danielli Hotel (James Bond – From Russia with Love was filmed there) and the magnificent entrance to the Grand Canal. You can also decide to take a romantic ride with a Veneteian gondola through mysterious canals.

Attractions and tours: • St Mark’s Square with the Basilica • The Doge’s Palace and the Bridge of Sighs • Renaissance clock tower • The Rialto bridge in the old town • Gondola ride
