Festive fervor ends up in smog

NDTV CASE AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN RECENT TIMES

The situation in the country is much tensed these days, currently the nation is divided between two sects of people, one who believe that whatever the Government does is right and the other group of people who oppose each and every deed of the Government. The one who are pro Government are always ready to defend the acts of Gov-

COP 22 should transit from political negotiations to enforce implementation!

At the opening of the United Nations climate change conference, the first since the international community reached the historic Paris Agreement last year, Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Environment and Energy for the Maldives and Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), released the following statement on behalf of the coali-

I woke up the morning after Diwali to witness a strange, uncanny blanket of smog covering the sun and the sky as if draped with a dull grey sheet, which had faded down on the streets of the city reducing visibility to barely a few hundred meters. SC/ST written on Dalit Bags

The President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Awards to the winning children of IGNITE Competition, organised by the National Innovation Foundation, at Rashtrapati Bhawan, in New Delhi. The Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi and the Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan are also seen.

SAI: The political parties leave no scope of taking credit for Government schemes. Nowadays same thing is happening with another such scheme. A dalit group in Madhya Pradesh is protesting against a scheme by Shivraj government. The bags were freely distributed by Shivraj Government in a School in Mandsaur to SC/ST students. The bags on them had written ‘SC/ST Scheme’. It was for the purpose of singling out the Dalit amongst the general category people. Around 250 out of 600 SC/ST students have got this bag in Rajiv Gandhi PG College. These students belong to UG and PG course. This bag contains one calculator, pen and a notebook.

There was a time when Diwali was called the festival of lights and it was truly so. The explanation for this comparison goes back to the time when lord Ram was returning to Ayodhya after slaying the evil Ravana; it was a dark, moonless night. So the people of Ayodhya decorated the streets with so many lights to welcome their king that it appeared as if it is daytime. Diwali though is still called the festival of lights in the present day. The only difference now is that the lights have been dimmed by environmental hazards like noise and air pollution. The credit goes to the unconcerned people of Delhi and NCR who went ahead and burnt several hundred crores of crackers relentlessly despite of witnessing several hundred crores of advertising and promo-

tional campaigns to discourage this blasphemy. Unfortunately this Diwali was no different from the ones gone by though the years. Rather this was a notch above the rest as it appears we must have broken yet another record in pollution levels. Delhi as usual and expected turned into a gas chamber the day after recording particulate matter (PM) 2.5 concentration of 999.99 which is 16.5 times higher than WHO’s prescribed levels. I woke up the morning after Diwali to witness a strange, uncanny blanket of smog covering the sun and the sky as if draped with a dull grey sheet, which had faded down on the streets of the city reducing visibility to barely a few hundred meters. Even though it was a holiday after Di-

wali on the occasion of Govardhan Pooja on Monday; a reason enough to rejoice, yet the climate outside turned the festive mood to gloomy and morose. As the festive fervor faded, the events which followed right after included six deaths in road accidents due to heavy smog, closure of schools in Delhi for three days, people experiencing breathing problems and other respiratory problems due to rising levels of air pollution. Yet I came across some shocking posts on facebook by an unperturbed gentleman saying, “Hum to patakhe jalaenge chahe kitni bhi pollution kyon na ho…” (We will burst crackers no matter how much pollution occurs). It saddens me that such ruthless and obstinate people are a part of our society who have no value or concern for our children’s future. Besides, it is beyond my comprehension that even though our government may have implemented several measures in the past to curb pollution but they all seem to fall flat in the absence of one single stern and concrete step, which could have been a blanket ban over sale of crackers. Delhi’s Chief Minister, shri Arvind Kejriwal declared a state

of emergency in the capital listing down some precautionary measures to be enforced by the state government to fight the perilous pollution levels. These include halting of all construction and demolition work in Delhi for coming five days. No use of diesel generators except at places like hospitals or mobile towers for next five days. Closure of all government and private schools in the capital for the next three days, shutting down of the coal-based Badarpur power plant for next ten days from Monday, vacuum cleaning of city roads from November 10, PWD to carry out sprinkling of water on the roads of 100-foot width from Monday at least once a week to counter dust pollution, a ban on burning of leaves or garbage and other waste in the city, bulldozing of landfill sites and the return of odd-even scheme sooner or later. The state government is in discussion with the centre for the possibility of creating artificial rain over the capital with cloud seeding. The government has also appealed to people to stay indoors as much as possible and work from home. Corporate houses and multinational companies are also doing their best to protect their employees from Delhi's toxic air, such as some companies have started providing air filtering masks to their employees and installing air purifiers inside their office premises. Companies have also announced flexible working hours next week for its employees in the form of "flexi work" policy which allows employees to work from home under emergencies as currently faced in the capital.

uted under the welfare scheme and if there is something written on the bag then whats wrong in that? If some people have problem with that i may remove what has been written on that. Scheme has been named by the supplier himself”. He further told that these bags started to be distributed from the month of August. He said he will make sure that whatever has been written is removed in the next phase of bag distribution. Congress has targeted BJP government in Madhya Pradesh. It was further alleged that RSS motivated BJP Government is anit dalit and it aims at exploiting dalit as their vote bank and the bags are correct example of that.

No action by police against builder ‘There is a limit to for duping customers of crores Gundagardi'-Kejriwal

Allottees have been cheated to the tune of 250 crores of rupees in the name of super area Possession of less carpet area given, whereas money has been taken for more super area TAC News Amidst a barrage of scams and fraudulent practices by builders and real estate developers, yet another case has come to light in which Smt. Darshan Goel had accused the police and in turn the government for not taking any action against JMD Builders despite of her complaint. Darshan Goel booked a unit in JMD Megapolis located on Gurgaon – Sohna Road. According to her, JMD Builder has cheated and defrauded the 900 allottees of the Units of JMD Megapolis to the tune of rupees 250 crores. The money has been extorted in the name of Super Area. As per the declaration filed by the builder with Haryana Apartment Ownership Act, 1983 the carpet area is more but in reality it is 22% less at the site. Smt. Darshan Goel, one of the 900 allottees of JMD Megapolis has reported the said fraud and cheating by the builder to Town and Country Planning Department, Chandigarh, State Vigilance Bureau, Gurgaon Police Department, Local Administration and has also lodged a complaint at Chief Minister’s window, but it has been over one & a half year and any action against the builder is yet to be taken. Mrs. Darshan Goel who is a senior citizen, had purchased an office space measuring

about 1472 sq. ft. in December, 2014 in JMD Megapolis at about Rs. 6000/- per sq. ft. The possession of the said unit was given by the builder in Dec 2014 itself. But the complainant was surprised to see that the builder has not done the flooring as promised and there was no plaster on the walls and roof for which lodged her protest with the builder, but of no use. When the complainant got measured the carpet area, she was shocked to note that carpet area is about 405 sq.ft less. In this manner the builder had cheated her to the tune of Rs. 24 lacs, besides extorting Rs. 2 lacs in the name of parking, Rs. 2.20 lacs in the name of transfer charges, and has also taken money in the name of IDC and EDC in violation of law. Mrs. Darshan Goel also told that the builder in connivance with the concerned TCP officials have even sold the common area to some of the unit holders. Not only this the concerned officials of the local administration and Tehsildar office are hand in glove with the builder. As per Haryana Apartment Ownership Act, a book in FORM C is to be kept regarding Registry of Units, so that the Registry can be done in accordance with the Declaration filed by the builder. But the concerned officers with a view to extend illegal benefits to the builder,

no such Register is maintained. The illegal Registry are being done and the complainant has made the complaint from CM to the DGP, Vigilance, Haryana but no action has been taken and the illegal Registry in blatant violation of law is still continuing in Tehsildar office. Even the police is also hand in glove with the builder. When the complainant lodged a complaint with SHO Vijay Kumar, PS Sadar, Gurgaon, but he did not register the FIR. Not only this, the S.I. Vinay Kumar even made derogatory remarks against the Hon'ble Judges of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India. When the entire facts were produced before the Ld. Magistrate, the Ld. Magistrate ordered for registration of FIR against the builder in which the SHO and the concerned S.I. who made derogatory remarks against the Hon'ble Judges of the Hon'ble Supreme Court. But it is a matter of great astonishment that the investigation in the said FIR has been marked to a Junior S.I. who has no right and authority to investigate against his senior officers. This shows that the concerned officials want to hush up the matter. The complainant Mrs. Darshan Goel said that it was said that in Congress Regime the corruption was rampant, but in BJP regime the corrupt officials and erring builders are being protected and the common man is the worst sufferer. In last two years the complainant has made various complaints supported by documentary evidences, but no action has been taken. Now the complainant demands that CM Manohar Lal Khattar and PM Narender Modi must interfere in this matter and the investigation must the transferred to some independent investigating agency, so that truth can come on record and justice can be done to the complainant and the PROPER and IN DEPTH investigation may be ordered against the officers concerned of TCP, Police and State Vigilance Bureau.

Are we going to face something we never believed

Are we going to face something we never believed even though I too, this year summer 2016 saw a tremendous change in the form of fever people suffered from breaking joint pains to very uncertain and unknown pattern of viral fever that grasped people across country, Even the doctors are not aware about this new viral fever, remembering from my childhood days to adulthood we never saw such diseases as of now the tremendous change happing in environment and lot of food adulterations as well as the wars and nuclear test are somewhere responsible for the spring up of new diseases.

Saman Bilgrami: People told about the gripping infection which left the prey for nearly 48 hours, the symptoms of which are pretty similar to dengue. The month of September was not good in the perspective of health sector Delhi dealt with dengue and chikungunya which we in our childhood never heard off I think. There are nearly 432 official cases of chikungunya, along with roughly 400 cases of dengue, in the national capital. Those who experienced this vital flu told that nagging pain starts from hands and legs and massively took over the whole body combined with arthritis, shivering, rashes and orange bumps like appear on whole body. Talk to any doctor in the capital and they say the official statistic (432 at the time of

publication) doesn’t paint the right picture. Yet the civic authorities in Delhi maintain there is just “a spike in the infection cases” and “no outbreak”. Where does this leave you? 1. The Chikungunya Fever Is Different From Typhoid and Viral Patients say, ‘joint pain’ doesn’t describe the depleting intensity of pain which has caused people to get wheeled into hospitals. Chikungunya strikes without a warning. People who have recovered from it report a sudden onslaught of high-grade fever, almost 103 to 105 degrees. Viral will peak every five to six hours, is generally accompanied by other flu-like symptoms (not always) but chikungunya is merciless. One minute you are okay, the

next you’re gripped with high-fever and before you know there’s this bone-breaking, crippling joint pain. 2. The First 48 Hours Are Miserable The symptoms are different for most people but generally the joint-racking pain lasts for the first few days. The first 48 hours are miserable; 2% patients have long-lasting pain for more than six months. Lifting your arms to pick your cellphone, getting up to pee all seem like Herculean tasks. This viral infection gives arthritis-type of joint pain. We give non-steroidal anti-inflammatory painkillers, once we confirm the disease. But these can’t be given for long because they can impact the kidneys. We usually manage the condition with disease modifying drugs which alter your im-

TAC News/ New Delhi: The politics has started over ex army personnel Ram Kishan’s suicide at Jantar Mantar. The Delhi police stopped Rahul Gandhi who was on his way to meet the family members of the army personnel at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. On the other hand the deputy chief minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia was also arrested when he was on his way to meet the family members of army personnel. However, he was released later on. Kejriwal got in-furious over the arrest of Deputy Chief minister. he said that whats wrong if in any state the Deputy Chief minister goes to console the family members of a army personnel on his death? “There is a limit to Gundagardi, Modiji”, he said. He further said that Modiji beats his chest on the fearfulness of army personnel but when he dies, Modiji doesn't give any response. Who will give the answer, if not the Prime Minister of the country. He further questioned the PM and said if deputy chief minister goes to meet such person how would that create any danger for law and order and whats wrong in that? Manish sisodia said that

mune system’s response to the disease. 3. Why Does Your Doc Say You Are Positive When Chikungunya Blood Tests Are Negative ? Do not self medicate in any circumstance. Bottom line - Go to a reputed hospital and trust your doctor when he judges your symptoms and gives a diagnosis. Do not self medicate in any circumstance. In the initial stages, symptoms of many viral diseases look similar but as the disease progresses, your doctor can differentiate between them symptomatically. The chikungunya test costs around Rs 3,500 to 4,500 depending on which lab you go to, but the accuracy of the results depends upon the timing of the test. The virus load in your body increases and then decreases, and your immune sys-

he went to console the family not to give any Dharna. Rahul Gandhi called police’s activity as undemocratic. He hinted that the currently ruling party is making India abnormal. The congress party stated that the Government is working in an Undemocratic manner and the army personnel are forced to commit suicide due to that. It is to be noted that ex army personnel Ram Kishan had committed suicide, the family members told that he was going to meet Defence Minister Manohar parrikar but on his way took poison to kill himself. Ram Kishan was protesting at Jantar Mantar from past few days. The Government has already implements One Rank One Pension but few army personnel are pointing out problems in the scheme and are opposing it. Ram kishan’s son told that his father had called him and has said that he is going to commit suicide because Government is not accepting his demands. According to his son, he was taken to RML Hospital after he consumed poison where he ultimately died. Kejriwal has announced 1 crore to be given to his family members.

tem responds to the disease with antibodies. So, if a blood test is done early, (after 8 to 10 days from the day the fever sets in), the test is likely to be NEGATIVE 60 to 70 percent, according to experts. Trouble is, no doctor or patient waits, or should wait to do a blood test five days after the fever has died - it is only then that 90 percent of the tests are POSITIVE. Sure, chikungunya is on a feverish high in Delhi this september, it has no cure but the disease is mostly not fatal like dengue. 4.No cure does not mean there are no medicines to manage your condition. There is no specific treatment, but we have very good drugs which cut down on inflammation, control fever, which are the main problem of this disease. The disease comes in stages, once the fever dies in four to five days, the nausea, ulcers, sensitive skin, rashes accompany the joint pain. 5. Bright Side - You Can’t Be Re-Infected Unlike Dengue You can get dengue four times and the severity of the illness increases with each subsequent infection, but chikungunya is gold in that aspect. You get it once like your childhood bout of chickenpox and it’s out of your way for good. Take plenty of rest, have fluids if there’s appetite and once you’re better.

Today do we really need education of children

education needle, which increases their risk of HIV infection. Overall 0.4% and 4.6% of total treatment seekers in various states were children. Lack of Parental Guidance and Communication which is acting as a helping agent

W.H.O. Report.

If current trends continue, 250 million children alive today will be killed by tobacco." The incidence of drug abuse among children and adolescents is higher than the general population. This is notably because youth is a time for experimentation and identity forming.

Lack of Education and Sensitization

There is a major problem in India that there are no sensitization programmes about drug abuse in schools or for children out of school. The use of tobacco is another major concern amongst children. In India 20 million children a year and nearly 55,000 children a day are drawn into a tobacco addition.

Street children and risks attached to them.

Saman Bilgrami Today do we really need education of children, rather than we need to educate on parenting issues, Earlier if we see mostly women or mother were not educated and used to work around the household chores, time changed and so the thinking that a women should be educated to know her rights and to guide through her kids well, But to the grit do we find that today’s young working and much educated women’s are very unstable in relationship building and carrying them ahead, why so? I am dealing largely with the students and so with their parents, to extend of my surprise, I have came across time and again that now when we have sent the kids to study here our responsibility is over? My mind struck on how can parents, ever withdraw by saying so. Are we being parents too busy to see what is going on in our children life? Are we trying to understand and to communicate with the children? Do we get time on dinner tables to discuss the whole day activities? All we have is social media communication parents are added in friends list, and the days are celebrated as they have their parents for that particular day i.e. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and so on. Our relations are largely today depending on days, the guidance that used to start from homes earlier now starts from the crèche or day care? Give a thought before you leave your toddler in the hands of strangers? Build a place for interaction and communication to discipline kids from toddlers to teens to adolescents there are

many ways for parents to improve building strong communication channel and a positive relationships.

Parenting Techniques:-

Try to spend time on a regular basis to do something fun with your child, in doing so many things can be observed in children, Adolescents , discipline is the demand of this time so try to implement in front of the children. Agree on what behavior is desirable and not desirable. Today we hardly respond on undesirable behavior of the children. Look for gradual changes in behavior. Don’t expect too much. Praise behavior that is coming closer to the desired goal. Reward desirable behavior as much as possible by verbal praise, touch or something tangible such as a toy, food or money.

The “3 Fs” of Effective Parenting:-

Firm:- Consequences should be clearly stated and then adhered to when the inappropriate behavior occurs.

Fair:- The punishment should fit the

crime. Also in the case of recurring behavior, consequences should be stated in advance so the child knows what to expect.

Friendly:- Use a friendly but firm communication style to let children share everything with you as a friend instead they share it anywhere else and get an inappropriate advice.

INEFFECTIVE PARENTING EFFECT’S:-

This is notably because youth is a time for experimentation and identity forming. Drug abuse among children and adolescents is higher this is notably because youth is a time for experimentation and identity forming. (This is the time when they try to find out the person in them the Physical and psychological changes as well plus these days the negligence and peer following are some of the major reasons why adolescents are the vulnerable population to fall prey of this giant abuse) Followed by an association with particular youth subcultures and lifestyles fashion and to trend among their peers,

In India an NGO survey revealed that 63.6 % of patients coming in for treatment were introduced to drugs at a young age below 15 years. According to another report 13.1% of the people involved in drug and substance abuse in India, are below 20 years. Heroin, Opium, Alcohol, Cannabis and Propoxyphene is the five most common drugs being abused by children in India. A survey shows that of all alcohol, cannabis and opium users 21%, 3% and 0.1% are below the age of eighteen. An emerging trend about child drug abusers is the use of a cocktail of drugs through injection, and often sharing the same

The use of certain drugs such as whitener, alcohol, tobacco, hard and soft drugs is especially wide spread among street children, working children and trafficked children the high use of intravenous drugs is accompanied by sharing of needles and hence a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Children affected by Substance Abuse and other criminal activities they fall in.

NGO’s, Help Groups, Psycholo-

gists, Therapist’s, Correction centers

There are many NGO’s and Help groups which are working day and night to Echo on such social evils and the role of proper Parenting techniques. Not only substance abuse but now we have internet as a source of wrong information provider and a place to get trapped in wrong groups and sites. Parents should acknowledge the source of information what their kids are getting and how to put restrictions on them. They should understanding the unique needs of a toddler or adolescent, seeking alternatives to time-outs or punishment, or ending physical or emotional violence within the family, Violence is another cause that children notice at home and get emotional trauma and to deal with it they fall prey of various ill habits, plus the family structure in India is also a bigger reason of parenting problems,

The nuclear family system:-

The nuclear family system and suspending the traditional joint family system where children used to have someone always at home to look after them and their activities. At last you are the one who is the first listener, the incentive provider, the guide, first friend, teacher, role model, critics and an observer who else can better guide and judge the kids then the parents themselves but if things go wrong way always seek help!!!

After all they are your ‘Taare Zameen Par’.

Every child has potential; it’s just a matter of exploring it

Rashmi prakash, Principal of Delhi Public School Ghaziabad Society hopes to provide experiential learning to children from all sections of the society

It is one’s disciplined childhood comprising the basic values of sharing, honesty and compassion that make a way of life. I would like to see that children get the opportunity for experiential learning right from the grass root level. Educationists should look beyond the process of giving certificates or degrees and focus on areas of research and innovation to make Indian society at par with international standards. It is imperative to create learner-oriented laboratories and well equipped libraries to enlighten young minds. As a principal, the most satisfying aspect of the job is to see the holistic development of a student, to see them thinking out of the box, engaging in discussions and expressing their views. The most challenging one is to identify the qualities of a student and then develop a programme to suit and enhance the individual’s growth. Students experience very high stress and anxiety level as a result of which they

begin to compare themselves with their peers. Here comes the role of a teacher in helping students deal with peer pressure and self-development issues. It gives me great joy to witness the pool of creativity and confidence among Gen Y. they are sure of what they want as a result of which they speak their minds. Some children are born talented while there are others who do not realize their potential until it is mad recognized to them. It is our responsibility, as mentors, to guide students on their talents and alternative career opportunities. Every student has something to teach. The self assurance and the confidence of students never ceases to amaze me.

opinion NDTV CASE AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN RECENT TIMES Sparsh Upadhyay Email ID -13bal055@nirmauni.ac.in

The situation in the country is much tensed these days, currently the nation is divided between two sects of people, one who believe that whatever the Government does is right and the other group of people who oppose each and every deed of the Government. The one who are pro Government are always ready to defend the acts of Government, even if such acts are apparently unfair and bad in logic. The Ravish Kumar show which was telecast-ed yesterday made us think many things, what if our power to question is throttled down by a superior authority? Will Democracy be of any need? And would Democracy be able to function amidst such pressure? The mime artists that were present in the prime time show portrayed the disputed character of superior authority (undisputedly the people in the Government) and their supporter. The question that we must engage ourselves with is that what recourse do we have when such pressure is exerted upon by the authority in power. The Ravish show was not only a strategic attack on such authority but was also an assault upon the people who act as representatives of the Government and who are as illogical as the Government becomes at times. There was more than one incident that happened this week and which changed the role of media which proved out to be a strong fourth pillar of the Democracy. The speech of Indian Express’ chief Raj Kamal Jha in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was another incident of press reinstating its importance and power which it is supposed to hold in a democratic setup. Raj Kamal Speech had mentioned about Ramnath Goenka who had sacked a journalist when he heard a CM of a state telling him, "Aapka reporter bahot accha kaam kar raha hai". Such was the autonomy and decision making power the press had, even in the period of emergency the Indian Express, despite of huge pressure by the Government, then at power, did not stop printing its issues. It is not ironical that that the same newspaper has once again positioned itself as the savior of truth and that too in front of the man at power. There appears a question as to why there is any need to criticize Government, why do we need such media houses who are strong enough to protect the truth even if the whole Government system goes against such media house. If we go by the logic of so called blind supporters of Government, they see such media houses, who at times criticize Government, as being funded by the other political parties or by the so called anti nationals. Since when did criticizing the Government become an anti-national activity? Indian Express newspaper had criticized the Congress Government during emergency and it once again it raised voice in the past week in front of the Prime Minister when he said that “You said some wonderful things about journalists which makes us a little nervous”. Coming to the Ravish Kumar case, we have seen him asking and criticizing the Congress Government during the period of 2007-2012, be it 2G case or Common wealth games corruption, Ravish Kumar show was first at questioning the Government. Let’s combine the two cases and understand the similarity these two cases have with each other. The Ravish kumar case and the Indian Express editor’s speech together should be valued as the landmark of Good journalism, where the contents that these two cases offer must not be seen as criticizing the Government but rather as inquiring about the truth and which paves way for the growth of good Journalism. It is true that Government must not have unbridled power, but rather a controlled one. The media houses could have an indirect control over the Government which may be necessary in situations where the superior authority tries to override the democratic setup in a very autocratic manner. It may be said that media, too must have a control over it but not in the manner which has happened with NDTV, where it was singled out and was asked to stop its broadcast for one day. But it is seen as the assault on the freedom of expression of the media. The fundamental problem of the Government is that it understands that some media houses are against it, but the truth is that the Government works for the state and same is the case with media houses, which are said to be the fourth pillar of Democracy. Actually there is a need to keep checks and balances on the deeds of Government and same thing must happen with the media houses, but there must not be an arbitrary action by either side. There is no need to be any tussle between the two and they must prosper with the support of each other. In the end I want to remember what Ravish kumar had once said that, “Jo patrakar sarkar ke kareeb ho jaata hai wo janta se dur ho jata hai” which means that media houses have less or no responsibility towards the Government but more towards the people.

India’s move to attain self-reliance in Cement production

Erum Khan:After coming to power, India’s Prime Minister shri Narendra Modi has paid special emphasis on encouraging multi-national as well as national companies to manufacture their products in India through his ‘Make in India’ initiative. As a result of this initiative, India has emerged as the no. 1 destination globally for foreign direct investment after USA and China and Industrial hubs from all over the world are being setup here in India. In 2015, India received an FDI of US$63 billion. The Indian Govt. has been making policies to realize the dream of giving each and every Indian family a roof over their head. The paucity of cement in India is coming between the ‘Make in India’ and ‘A home for every family’ initiatives due to which we are dependent on other nations for cement imports. Today when the slogan of ‘Swadeshi’ is reverberating inside the country; a war like situation has emerged with Pakistan and Indians are saying no to ‘Made in China’ products and commodities, then why should cement production be ignored in our country? When we talk of Indian companies manufacturing cement then the name of Cement Corporation of India Limited (CCI) rises over the Indian horizons.

Cement Corporation of India Limited (CCI) was established on January 18, 1965 with the objective of setting up cement units in public sector to help achieve self-sufficiency in cement production in the country. CCi is based out of New Delhi and has been manufacturing a variety of cements, such as Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC), Portland slag cement (PSC), and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) of varying grades - 33, 43,53 and 53S (special grade cement for manufacture of sleepers for Indian Railways). Currently CCI has 10 operating units spread over seven Indian states and union territories having a total annual installed capacity of 38.48

lakh MT. CCI has been producing only 14.46 lakh metric tonnes of cement every year from its three plants based out of Tandoor, Bokajan, Rajban. The rest of its units located in Charkhi Dadri, Delhi- GU, Nayagaon, Akaltara, Mandhar, Adilabad, Kurkunta, nyo having an expected annual capacity of 40 lakh metric tonnes, have been closed due to official apathy. Recently Dr. Subramaniam Swamy urged the Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi to stop importing from Pakistan but only time will tell if his suggestions to the govt. of India will be considered and followed. According to Mr. V K Pandey, General Manager (P&D), if all of CCI’s ten plants start operating it will not only achieve an annual production of 55 lakh Metric Tonnes but will also become country’s largest cement manufacturing company having a projected profit of 53.51 crore equivalent to five times the profit earned in the last two years. Besides it will be able to provide direct or indirect employment to over three thousand people and India will not have to import cement from Pakistan.

Small Island Nations will suffer the most if action not implemented soon enough!

Next week, the twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) and the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 12) will be held in Bab Ighli, Marrakech, Morocco from 7-18 November 2016. The UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech is the crucial establishing step for governments looking to operationalize and cement the Paris Climate Change Agreement adopted last year. While the Paris Agreement gave clear road maps and a final destination in respect to decisive action on climate change, many of the details regarding how to catapult forward as one global community in that common direction still need to be resolved. Therefore the dialogue and decisions in Marrakech hold immense potential to accelerate and amplify the immediate response to the challenge recognized in the Paris Agreement. This meeting is therefore expected to move ahead from political negotiations to actual implementations, and that is one incredibly important factor which will make it a success. Although it was the leaders of the smallest and most vulnerable countries that did make a splash in Paris last year, it is yet to be seen how an eventual climate change agreement may shape up to save them. Legally binding international agreement with quantifiable targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions was surely rolled out but with floods, droughts, coral bleaching worldwide, how far have we succeeded, specially those members of AOSIS is the question? At the opening of the United Nations climate change conference, the first since the international community reached the historic Paris Agreement last year, Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Environment and Energy for the Maldives and Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), released the following statement on behalf of the coalition of 44 small island and coastal states that are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change: “The first round of climate change talks since Paris, like so many others have before, opens against the backdrop of extreme climate impacts across our membership: Cyclones Ula, Winston, and Zena wreaked havoc in the South Pacific earlier this year; Severe droughts in parts of the Caribbean and the Western Pacific continue to cause water and food

security crises; A massive coral-bleaching event has turned reefs bone white across the tropics; And scientists have confirmed the loss of 5 islands to sea level rise in the Solomon archipelagoshowing climate change is now infringing on sovereign territory. The diplomatic community has expressed how seriously it takes climate change. Now we have to turn this political momentum into action at home. But even if all countries fully meet their nationallydetermined contributions, we would still be on track for warming of close to 3 degrees, which is well in excess of the 1.5 degrees goal agreed to in Paris. This would spell catastrophe for our members and, indeed, the rest of the world as well.” If the talks in Morocco fall short these island countries may lose faith. It is no argument that these island countries will be doomed unless greenhouse gas emissions plunge. It is true that the small Islands are least in their contribution to climate hazards but stand in the forefront in bearing the climate change brunt. I have been researching and visiting the small islands of Neil, Havelock and South Andamans here in India recently as the diving to the depths of the oceans here will confirm that the corals are so bleached and scanty, fish still comprise a huge segment of the rich underwater biodiversity but you can literally feel them lurking around in search of the lost blooming corals. India too has many small island nations and should be an active member of the association of small islands, the Indian sub-continent has Andaman and Nicobar groups of Islands on east have more than 530 smaller islands, and Lakshadweep islands on west coast. In these Islands the climate change plays important impact on mangroves, fisheries, coral reefs and aquaculture. There is a action driven need for evolving an ecosystem-centric and location-specific adaptation strategies for these Islands to deal with the climate. Meeting the children at the Tsunami Village set up by the government in South Andamans was a real eye opener, hearing first hand stories of helplessness and peril. Hear what the spokesman for the Association of Small Island Nations has to say, “We have just lost five islands in the Pacific,” said Amjad Abdullah, also chief negotiator from The Maldives, referring to several of the Solomon Islands that have now slipped under the waves. “How much more evidence do we need?” Expressed sympathy for island nations ravaged by climate change is not enough, it’s less clear how far he can go to help them. These islands, organized as the 39member Alliance of Small Island States and severely jeopardized by sea level rise, have long tried to strike a difficult bargain in climate change meetings and they want the global temperature goal to be holding warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, rather than 2 degrees. “The only question is whether we join together quickly and boldly enough to avoid catastrophe,” Thoriq Ibrahim, environment minister for the Maldives and

issue

chair of the Alliance of Small Island States also questions in dismay. So, it is not all about protecting the big economies any more, is it? AOSIS did create a ripple last year in Paris. UN Framework Convention on Climate Change shared the Structured Expert report, which found that a 1 1/2degree warming goal would substantially reduce the risks over two-degree warming. At the lower temperature, sea-level rises might remain below one metre, at two degrees, all bets were off– and ocean acidification rates would stay at moderate levels, giving some hope for the survival of coral reefs. In our country India, overwhelming evidence shows that climate change presents growing threats to public health security from extreme weather-related disasters to wider spread of such vectorborne diseases as malaria and dengue. Developing country and their expansive populations, particularly in small island states, arid and high altitude mountain zones, and in densely populated coastal areas are considered to be particularly vulnerable. Great Himalayas, the world's third largest ice mass in the north, 7500 km long threaten to melt, and densely populated coastal areas in the peninsular south are always in the news of some natural disaster or the other. Numerous floods claimed thousands of lives and rendered millions of people homeless the number of people killed, injured, or made homeless by natural disasters has been increasing rapidly. The Maldives are another example, which are located in the Indian Ocean about 600 kilometres southwest of India, realized something was wrong with the climate in 1987, when tidal waves inundated Malé, the capital. More than 80 per cent of the total land area, made up of almost 1,200 islands, lies less than one metre above sea level. Individually, these island countries like the Maldives have hardly any effect but staying strong together will help for sure. It is sad but true, they are neither big emitters nor big energy suppliers. Who will pay for the effects of global warming damage caused to them is a big question at COP 22 again this year. The COP 22 will be swinging between global warming posing a threat to future generations and devastations already happening to small islands. If the temperatures rise, the waters will rise. The small island states may really go under water. The major cities will not be safe either. In fact, almost half of the world’s population can be at risk as 44% of the global population lives within 150km of the coast. If the invasion of the sea has to stop then, the warming must stop. Pollution too takes a toll on lives. It all adds up. Any lay person can fathom the intensity of the rage of the oceans, which will throw back into the ocean what we give and dump into it. Only two months ago, I recall meeting UNEP Chief Erik Solheim at our Mumbai Versova beach while cleaning up the plastics accumulated on the beach, the plastic waste was more than few feet in depth into the sand buried refusing to let go, over the years it had formed a wall

within the labyrinths of the beach used by locals and fisherfolks. All I could think of was what we give to the ocean we get back. The Ocean is not going to spare of and this example has truly made it very clear. Mr. Erik saw some hope in the cleanliness drives initiated here in Mumbai but was in shock at the damage, “We need to save our planet for the future generation. We need more consolidated efforts to get the community into action to fight climate change and pollution.” If the temperatures rise, the waters will rise. The invasion will come from the sea. The invasion will be led by the sea. Community action can help stop water level rise, we must collectively rise to bring the damage done by bigger industries in our own backyards, to the governments notice every now and then. India is surrounded by three sides we have no where to run! And most of the world cities will be vulnerable to this invasion. Therefore this brings us to the fact that there is another less dramatic but more destructive threat. It is sea level rise. And unlike the cyclone -the sea level rise creates hopelessness. It is happening inch-by-inch. Waters threaten to swallow the lands. United Nations Water asserts in their publication titled Climate change adaptation mainly about water… “Already, water-related climate change impacts are being experienced in the form of more severe and more frequent droughts and floods. Higher average temperatures and changes in precipitation and temperature extremes are projected to affect the availability of water resources through changes in rainfall distribution, soil moisture, glacier and ice/snow melt, and river and groundwater flows; these factors are expected to lead to further deterioration of water quality as well.” It adds “Water is the primary medium through which climate change influences the Earth's ecosystems and therefore people’s livelihoods and well-being.” Yes it is we who have altered the Earth's climatology and chemistry, its snow cover, permafrost, sea and glacial ice extent and ocean volume, all fundamental elements of the hydrological cycle. As the global temperature continue to increase no one is exactly sure that how quickly the sea levels will rise and by how much. Get your communities and government into action, fight for climate change, be alert, report pollution. Enforce renewable energy. Educate the next generation to fight for climate change action. Be a part of the world movement. I am privileged to be trained by the Climate Change Evangelist Al Gore who kick started the climate change movement years ago and rang the first wake up call, today the world knows he is right and his leaders all over the world are working towards actions to fight climate change.COP 22 I believe will draw out a plan of action for technologies and carbon trades, but hopefully will give small island countries their due. Their plight is the unseen slow damage. True, it is frightening how much the ocean and seas can reclaim, slowly but surely!

Pakistani audience threw stones on Indians

SAI/Amritsar: The uneasiness between India and Pakistan is not cooling down. Sunday evening at Attari border stones were thrown from Pakistani side when beating retreat formality was going on at the border. ACCORDING TO THE SOURCES, there were Kashmir slogans also raised during the Beating Retreat ceremony. Sources have told that in the VVIP gallery there were few stones thrown but nobody were injured. On 29th September, India had asked the people who come in 10 kms range of International border with Pakistan to vacate their houses. On Sunday, BSF had allowed some people to witness Retreat Beating. BSF sources also told that anti-Indian slogans are also being raised from other side of the border. Sources also told that, BSF officials and Pak Rangers also held meeting in which BSF raised its objection for raising of such slogans. Further, they assured that there will be investigation but Indian believes that it will not be done. The strained relationship has been in place, since the killing of Burhan Wani in the Kashmir valley. New Delhi: China has stopped the water of Brahmaputra tributary, it is making a hydro project. It raises concerns for India, as this step of China may affect many countries including India China has did this after India’s decision to cancel the Indo-Pak Sindh river inspection meeting, in the wake of Uri attack. It was India also hinted at re looking at the agreement. This is why; China’s step is seen as a response to India’s decision. This could be a way of China to put pressure on India. China’s has set up its project over Brahmaputra River’s tributary Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet. Around 750 million US dollar has been invested in the said project. This information has been given by China’s government news agency Xinhua. The place is quite near to international border with India, near Sikkim. It is from this place that Brahmaputra River enters Arunachal Pradesh. It is China’s costliest project. According to reports, this project started in 2014 and

it was expected to be completed by 2019. It is however not clear as to it will have an impact over India and Bangladesh and on the flow of Brahmaputra. Last year, 1.5 billion dollar worth of project was started by china, India had raised its concerns, and China has been kept on saying that it knows India’s concern. China’s 12th five year plan indicates that in the autonomous territory of Tibet, China proposes to set up three more Hydro projects. This year, Central Water resources Minister Sanwar lal Jat had said that the probable problems, due to the setup of China’s Hydro set up, to India has been informed to China India and China are not signatory to any water agreement however both nations have have together made an Expert mechanism related to river flowing on either side of the border. In 2013, a Memorandum of Understanding has also been signed between the two countries. Samachar Agency of India

Golden Haryana glittered on the occasion of Swarn Jayanti launch celebrations

I woke up the morning after Diwali to witness a strange, uncanny blanket of smog covering the sun and the sky as if draped with a dull grey sheet, which had faded down on the streets of the city reducing visibility to barely a few hundred meters. Even though it was a holiday after Diwali on the occasion of Govardhan Pooja on Monday; a reason enough to rejoice, yet the climate outside turned the festive mood to gloomy and morose.
