Wanda Cinema Goes for Second Major Installation of Christie Vive Audio Wanda Cinema Line, the largest movie theatre operator in China, equips its latest "Wanda Hall 9" auditorium at Wujiaochang Wanda Cinema in Shanghai with Christie's cutting-edge cinema audio solution, which utilizes ribbon driver speakers and Class D amplifiers. "Wanda Hall 9" is an exclusive class of cinema auditoriums targeted at movie aficionados. There are currently three such auditoriums located in Beijing and Shanghai. This particular auditorium at Wujiaochang Wanda Cinema complex boasts over 270 premium seats and a huge 17-meter high-gain metallic projection screen. It is the second theatre in China to embrace Christie Vive Audio's expansive line of cinema-specific audio technologies that are compatible with the leading immersive and surround audio formats in the market. This Vive Audio system has also been configured to meet the requirements of the Dolby Atmos sound technology system. Last year, Wanda Cinema Line became the first cinema chain in Asia to equip its Beijing CBD Wanda Plaza cineplex with Christie Vive Audio, to great success. "Our first Christie Vive Audio installation in Beijing received much acclaim from patrons and industry players alike since its opening in May last year, and we're convinced that Christie Vive Audio is one of the best cinema audio solutions that effectively delivers the power and performance that offers the best sound experience for our patrons," commented Maojun Zeng, general manager, Wanda Cinema Line. "We've decided to deploy Vive Audio at our most high-end "Wanda Hall 9" auditoriums as we are fully committed to constantly equipping our theatres with the

most modern technologies and high quality presentations." "We're proud and honoured that Wanda Cinema Line, our long standing partner, has once again chosen Christie Vive Audio to be installed at the Wujiaochang Wanda Cinema in Shanghai. "Our innovative audio solution and digital cinema projectors, coupled with our team of dedicated technical professionals, will continue to put Wanda at the forefront of the cinema industry." The groundbreaking Christie Vive Audio, which offers truly rich, dynamic and detailed sound, unlocks the full potential of the DCI digital cinema audio format and supports leading formats such as Auro 11.1,

Dolby Atmos, 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound. It consists of wall and ceiling surround speakers that use unique ribbon driver technology in a line array design, purpose-built for cinema environments. The installation in Hall 9 auditorium comprises more than 50 Christie Vive Audio speakers of varying combinations, including LA3 screen channel speakers, LA3C speakers for ceiling surrounds, LA3Sspeakers for advanced surround effects, LA4S speakers for wall surround effects, S215 subwoofers (for full range frequency response), as well as S218 for Low Frequency Effects (subwoofers) channels. The extensive range of speakers are driven by the Christie CDA line of professional amplifiers utilizing an advanced high-speed Class D architecture that offer high power output and efficiency and are designed for long-term, continuous operation. AMC Theatres and Movio Partner to Enhance Moviegoing and Guest Engagement AMC Theatres and Movio announced a multi-year partnership to ensure movies of all scope, size and budget are more effectively promoted to guests who are most likely to be interested. The partnership, which is scheduled for rollout in July, will help ensure movie enthusiasts can find relevant information about all films, including independent productions and foreign language films, in a way that's tailored to the specific guest based on their moviegoing habits and interests. AMC will integrate data from its loyalty program, AMC Stubs, which captures information from 2.4 million households, and its active and loyal industry-leading social media following with Movio Cinema, Movio's analytics and targeted marketing Software-as-a-Service solution. The result will be relevant and personalized content, such as movie trailers, movie news, special promotions, opening date information and show times - all delivered across the guests' preferred communication channels, including email, mobile and social media. A social media trail blazer in the exhibition industry, using various social media platforms to drive guest loyalty, AMC has more Facebook "likes," Twitter followers and YouTube subscribers than the other three major U.S. exhibition companies combined. AMC Movie News YouTube channel has had more than 200,000 views every day. Last fall, AMC launched AMCi Indie Spotlight, a YouTube show dedicated to discussion of independent movies. The partnership will help AMC directly reach guests who are most interested in all films, in particular, smallerbudget and independent films. For example, a movie fan who visits AMC's YouTube channel to watch an independent film trailer can now receive a promotion for that

independent movie when it begins showing at the local AMC theatre. "Movie lovers want to see great movies, but some of the best movies can get lost in the shuffle," says Stephen Colanero, AMC Chief Marketing Officer. "As an exhibitor, we're just as happy having our theatres filled with guests watching three different independent movies on three different screens as we are with guests watching one blockbuster showing on all three screens." Mr Colanero adds: "AMC has built an industry-leading social media fan base and an industry-leading subscriptionbased loyalty program. This new partnership gives us the ability to use those tools to connect guests with the information and promotions they are most likely to love." "Movio and AMC Theatres share a common vision in shaping the ultimate guest experience," says Movio Chief Executive Will Palmer. "Our immediate objective is to provide AMC guests with more personalized and relevant movie content across all digital and social platforms, including web, email, mobile, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. We can marry specific movierelated content to avid moviegoers based on their behaviour and social actions, which will support AMC's goal of driving independent, foreign language film fans into the theatres."

blockbuster movies. At the current pace, the company anticipates a 100 percent increase in Christie Vive locations, with up to 300 auditoriums pumping out rich, dynamic, detailed cinema audio by CinemaCon 2016. The latest locations to embrace Christie Vive - Southern Theatres' Movie Tavern in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Movie Tavern in Flourtown, Pennsylvania - are scheduled to open in May and July 2015, respectively. The installations are a testament to Southern Theatres' confidence in Christie Vive. The company was one of the first in the US to power a multiplex exclusively with Christie Vive Audio and Christie Solaria Series Projectors - the Grand 14 Esplanade in Kenner, LA, which opened in 2013; and the Movie Tavern Northshore in Covington, LA, which opened last year. They followed in the steps of other renowned exhibitors such as Grupo Cinemex, which opened 21 CinemeXtremo Premium Large Format auditoriums with Christie Vive and Dolby Atmos. With 40 regional locations and growing, Southern Theatres has won extensive praise for providing the ultimate in movie viewing, with stateof-the-art digital projection, audio technology, and 3D capability. Its Movie Tavern locations are recognized for their full-service offerings that include casual dining, a full bar option, luxury recliners in every auditorium, and reserve seating. Christie Extends Partnership Agreement with Cannes Film Festival Christie, the global leader in visual displays and audio technologies, has signed a new agreement to be technical partner of the Cannes Film Festival for a further three years. This means that for the ninth year running, the famous showcase, held May 13-24, will use Christie's solutions for all its movie screenings. The enduring relationship offers a fascinating insight behind the iconic red-carpet event and - beyond - to how the industry of cinema is evolving. "Would Cannes Festival have known the development of D-cinema over the past few years without Christie's knowledge and technical involvement?" commented Thierry Fremaux, General Delegate of Cannes. "2015 is the ninth consecutive year for the partnership between Christie and Cannes Festival, and I'm delighted to say that it is more than a simple partnership." It's a theme echoed by Richard Nye, Cinema Sales Director, EMEA. "Interestingly, in the time we've been partnering with Cannes, projection technology has been part of a shift in cinema," explains Nye. "The transition from- film-to-digital and DCI compliance is something we have led. People think of movie heroes, but technology is an unsung hero and part of the story of modern cinema." The renewal of the partnership confirms Christie's leader status in the digital cinema industry. More movies will be screened digitally this year - with over 1,000 scheduled revealing the increasing weight of digital technologies in the industry. "Cannes is proud to be able to offer producers who have come from all over the world, the best possible projection environment, so their work is shown as world premieres and they are guaranteed a level of quality that everyone knows is the best in the world," continued

Thierry Fremaux. Christie is supplying 31 projectors from its Solaria series, supporting a variety of screen sizes and formats." "One of the directors has digitally re-mastered a film in 4K so we were asked to provide a CP4230 projector (a 4K DCI compliant projector for the largest screens sizes) for the Cinema de la Plage," said Pascal Gervais, regional sales director for France, Christie. "We were already providing CP4230s for the 4K in all the bigger halls such as Lumiere, Debussy and Soixantième. The projector can switch from 4K to 2K, depending on which film is showing, so other material can be screened. We were also asked for several Christie SKA-3D processors. Cannes is using them with their existing equipment to play Blu-ray through the SKA HDMI connection and SKA can output as cinema format. It's a simple switch but makes the Festival's organisers lives much easier." Christie's technical support will allow audiences to have a comprehensive cinema experience, including the highly anticipated screening of Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller's new movie, presented on May 14 at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, outside of the competition. "We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the world's leading festival. We are proud supporters of cinema as an art form, working behind-the-scenes more than people realize as part of our commitment to and relationship within the industry," concludes Richard Nye.

Barco-Powered Warner Bros Mobile Cinema Travels Europe Cinemagoers in Antwerp, Belgium, were treated to a free, immersive 4D experience on 14 and 15 May, as Warner Bros' CineTransformer held halt at the Kinepolis multiplex to promote the brand-new Warner Bros action-thriller San Andreas. The CineTransformer - a huge trailer that can be easily converted into a mobile cinema - is equipped with a compact, fully integrated projector from digital cinema technology leader Barco. From Antwerp, it will be heading for Germany, the UK and Spain. Developed back in 1995, the CineTransformer is a 53-foot double expandable trailer that can be transformed into a fully-fledged mobile cinema with 2D/3D and 4D capabilities, seating 91 people. Entertainment Warner Bros first toured the United States with a CineTransformer to promote 'Gravity' in 2013. This month, a Warner Bros movie trailer is travelling the States and Europe to provide a sneak peek of San Andreas - a new action thriller starring Dwayne Johnson. Fans in Antwerp, the first stop of the European tour, are invited to come out and watch an exclusive six-minute scene from the film in RealD 3D with buttkicker seats and experience it in 4D. Barco was happy to equip the trailer with a compact DP2K-10S projector, which is especially designed for smaller theatres, boothless cinemas and single screens. "Fox Belgium, which is an official distributor of Warner Bros movies in Belgium, asked if we were interested in supporting the European tour. As Barco has been working closely together with 20th Century Fox for a while, it was only logical for us to team up," says Wim Buyens, Barco's Head of Entertainment. Fox was an early endorser of the Barco Escape technology, working hand in hand with Barco throughout the last year to further develop the format and showcase new theatrical content to audiences. Earlier this month, Barco and Fox have inked a five-year, multi-

title per year agreement to release movies in the Barco Escape format. Buyens: "Barco is really addicted to cinema and committed to offering cinemagoers an ever better, ever more innovative cinema experience. We're therefore delighted to lend support to this initiative, which demonstrates how cinema can offer a truly unique and immersive entertainment experience."

ZhĂŹ qu weihu shan (The Taking of Tiger Mountain) was released in Greater China. The heroic 3D action drama, directed by Tsui Hark and distributed by Bona Film Group, hit a remarkable 110 million dollars at the Chinese box offices during its first 13 days. MBS Studios, Barco's Hong Kong-based post-production partner, contributed to this success by mixing the audio for the movie in the immersive Auro-3D sound format. The movie was critically acclaimed as Kong genre-meister Tsui Hark received praise for some of the most impressive 3D visuals in recent mainland cinema history. The spectacular 3D soundscape for this war drama was mixed by MBS, a local postproduction services and distribution organisation and longstanding technology partner of Barco. The Hong Kong-based company

Mr. Kinson Tsang, Managing Director and Chief Engineer at MBS explains: "The Auro 11.1 sound format enables us to create a unique and immersive audio experience for cinemagoers; and we are looking forward to producing more great quality immersive 3D movie mixes in Auro 11.1 by Barco."

CJ 4DPLEX Opened its First Romanian Auditorium CJ 4DPLEX and Cinema City opened its first 4DX movie theatre in Mega Mall, Romania. Cinema City is the largest multiplex operator in Central and Eastern Europe, operating 99 multiplexes across borders. Through its solid and robust partnership with Cinema City, 4DX has taken an important first step in its successful launch in the Romanian market. With its strong performance over the years throughout the European countries – England, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, and the Czech Republic – 4DX will lead the global cinema industry by providing a whole new level of movie-going experience in the region – raising the standard of viewing from “watching” to “experiencing.” The first Romanian 4DX theater held its inaugural film screening, prior to theater’s Grand Opening, which was May 19th with the opening title Mad Max: Fury Road, a dystopian action film. A large number of Romanian moviegoers came to see 4DX for the first time, which resulted in more than 90% of average seat occupancy rate on Sunday. The audiences said that the rumbling, shaking and heavy movement of the motion seats, combined with various multisensory effects were perfectly choreographed for a so-called ‘crazy immersion’ into the scenes onscreen.

Barco Enters Into Five-Year Agreement with 20th Century Fox Digital cinema market share leader Barco and 20th Century Fox announced a five-year, multi-title per year agreement to release movies in Barco's multi-screen, fully immersive movie format Barco Escape. Fox will be working with its filmmakers to produce new projects for the format beginning with the September release of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. As part of the deal, a Barco Escape setup will be installed in a theatre on the 20th Century Fox studio lot. Fox was an early endorser of the Barco Escape technology, working hand in hand with Barco throughout the last year to further develop the format and showcase new theatrical content to audiences. Director Wes Ball's The Maze Runner was the first film to release in Barco Escape, featuring approximately 10 minutes of footage in the format. It debuted at five Barco Escape Cinemark theatres in the U.S. and two Barco Escape Kinepolis theatres in Belgium. For The Scorch Trials Barco is targeting 25 locations, and Fox is targeting approximately 20 minutes of the film to be converted into the format. "The audience reaction from the Barco Escape footage on

The Maze Runner was overwhelmingly positive," says Chris Aronson, 20th Century Fox's President of Domestic Distribution. "We started working with Barco on this technology because we believe immersive experiences are the future of cinema. Now that Barco has upgraded its Barco Escape systems to be fully DCI compliant, we are further interested in finding tent pole movies for the format that will inspire audiences to leave their homes and go to the theatre to share in this unique experience." "Twentieth Century Fox has been an incredible partner for Barco Escape from the very beginning," says Todd Hoddick, Barco's VP of Global Entertainment. "The common theme from audiences that saw The Maze Runner with select scenes in Barco Escape was 'we want more!' We are thrilled to extend our relationship with the studio and its filmmakers to continue pushing the envelope and creating these new cinema experiences you can't get anywhere else." Barco Escape's next project, a special performance event with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga filmed natively for the format, will be released later this year.

Barco's laser projectors offer superior image quality with remarkable brightness levels, increased contrast ratio, and vivid colours for a radically improved movie experience that's unmatched in the industry. These brightness levels create an unparalleled 3D experience showing movies just the way they were intended by the moviemaker. Powered by the unique Series 3 Barco Alchemy Integrated Cinema Media Processor (ICMP), Barco laser projectors are the first in the world capable of showing full 4K content at 60 frames per second and 3D movies in 4K at extraordinary brightness levels. Sony, NT Live & Vue International Join Hands for Exclusive 4K Screening From next month, Vue International audiences around the UK will exclusively be able to watch the acclaimed National Theatre Live production Behind the Beautiful Forevers -projected in Sony Digital Cinema 4K for the highest possible picture quality.

of 4K coverage that the company provided on the NT's pioneering War Horse broadcast in February 2014. Led by Tom Giles, the NEP Visions technical team has worked hard to ensure that the workflow has been maximised, improved and streamlined to make it as easy as HD.

A landmark in event cinema, the 12th March performance of Behind the Beautiful Forevers was specially recorded in front of an audience at the NT's Olivier Theatre using six Sony F554K cameras. Mastered as a 4K DCP (Digital Cinema Package), the show will be screened as a series of exclusive 4K presentations across the whole of Vue's 83-site estate. Fully exploiting the phenomenal detail, contrast and colour gamut captured by the F55, the 4Kscreenings will bring patrons in Vue cinemas closer than ever to the atmosphere of being in the best seats in the house at the actual performance.

Brian Clark, Commercial Director, NEP Visions said, "We pride ourselves on pushing the boundaries of live broadcast coverage and the use of 4K technology. 4K is a major focus for the NEP Group, and combining this with working on such a prestigious project for the National Theatre culminates in the perfect balance of premium content and cutting edge technology."

Staged by the NT's incoming Artistic Director Rufus Norris and starring Meera Syal, Behind the Beautiful Forevers has attracted widespread critical acclaim since its opening in 2014. Bringing the performance from stage to screen in 4K has seen Sony, NT Live and Vue working closely with a tight-knit team of technical partners to ensure the highest possible picture quality for cinematic presentation. "We've been broadcasting theatre productions into cinemas since 2009, and we've really learned how to create an absorbing experience for cinema audiences", says NT Live Producer Emma Keith. "Behind the Beautiful Forevers was a natural choice to get the 4K treatment. It's a huge production, with lots of scene changes, complex on-stage action and colourful costumes. We immediately knew it would look great on camera." NEP Visions added a 4K layer to its NEP 1 OB truck for the outside broadcast element, once more pushing the technology boundaries

To capture Behind the Beautiful Forevers with cinematic clarity, rental specialist Presteigne Broadcast Hire has supplied six Sony F55 Super 35mm 4KCMOS sensor camera chains, including the CA-4000 camera adaptor for 4K fibre transmission and BPU-4000 4K base band processor. "We've always been at the forefront of technology", says David O'Carroll, Presteigne's Head of Technology. "With the advent of 4K and the F55, NT Live now has the opportunity to capture stage productions with a cinematic aesthetic in the highest definition possible." The cameras are rigged for the production with PL mount lenses, providing a shallow depth of field that's ideal for the movie-like feel that NT Live and its production partners have taken pains to realise. "In many ways the F55 offers us the best of both worlds", says David: "Its large-format sensor gives us that movie look, but with operation that's just like an ordinary live TV camera." One F55 right by the front of the stage is complemented by three further cameras near the middle of the stalls - described by NT Live's Emma Keith as "the best seats in the house". An additional pair of F55 cameras fitted with remotelycontrolled Fuji lenses are jib-

mounted, grabbing dynamic tracking shots right over the audiences' heads and into the performance space itself. Wide-angle establishing shots help capture the mood as the audience files into the Olivier auditorium. But once the curtain rises, the half-dozen F55 cameras are focused entirely on the stage action. Lighting is subtly adjusted for an optimum look on camera, while carefully maintaining the integrity of the original lighting design. "Theatrical lighting can be a challenge for video cameras, with lots of sudden blackouts, changes and colour shifts", explains Emma Keith. "We don't re-light the show for broadcast, but we do make small adjustments in technical rehearsals. We also fine-tune things like makeup and even the colour of the performers' hair. Then during the performance we're constantly tweaking things to make it work for a cinema audience - we're effectively colour grading in real time." "We're doing this as a totally end-toend 4K production for the benefit of Vue audiences" explains Technical Producer Chris Bretnall of Creative Broadcast Solutions, who's been intimately involved in the realisation of every NT Live project since 2009. "Our job is to accurately translate the National Theatre's creative vision, exactly as it's meant to be seen in terms of lighting and colour grading" says David Margolis of Soho Digital Cinema (SDC), NT Live's preferred mastering 'lab' for its cinematic productions. "We want to give cinemas a great-looking product - and for Behind the Beautiful Forevers we're working with the 'aslive' signal coming straight from the OB truck, completely uncompromised" notes David. "NT Live and its technical partners have set the benchmark for bringing world-class theatre into cinemas", comments David McIntosh, Vice President, Sony Digital Cinema 4K Solutions for Europe and the Americas. Vue Standardises on Sony 3D Leading cinema operator Vue Entertainment International is converting almost 400 of its Sony 4K projection systems in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Denmark to Sony Digital Cinema 3D. Upgrading its fleet to Sony 3D further enhances Vue's customer offering - giving audiences' supreme picture quality at every performance, whether they're watching in 3D or 2D and provides the operational attractions of standardising on an all-Sony 3D presentation solution. The operator has already standardised on Sony 4K projection across the group's Vue and CinemaxX branded European estate. Unlike 'triple-flash' systems that rapidly present different images to each eye in turn, Sony Digital Cinema 3D dual lens solution provides smooth, immersive flickerfree 3D images without distracting flashing effects. Sony's flexible, cost-effective R515P and R510P projectors are increasingly the preferred choice with independent exhibitors and boutique cinema chains. Recent UK independent customers include Curzon that is equipping seven sites across its network with Sony 4K technology. In recent months, Sony Digital Cinema Solutions Specialist dcinex (Ymagis Group) has won significant contracts in the Greece with customers Ster Cinemas and Odeon Cinemas, representing over 60 systems in total. Following on from its large-scale adoption in many countries, Sony 4K is fast becoming a must-have choice in other markets that are currently transitioning to digital. Leading Turkish boutique chain CINEMApink

has completed a 110-screen all-Sony conversion that includes 25 3D systems. Appointed late last year as an official dealer for Sony Digital Cinema 4K projection systems, Omega Cinema Systems has enjoyed considerable sales success in the region, supplying 4K projection systems to local customers including two brand-new sites in Ankara with cinema operator CineVision. Sony continues to lead the way in helping operators and content owners capitalise on the fast-growing Event Cinema market, spanning live and recorded presentation of cultural, sports and other events. In 2014, Sony helped bring The National Theatre's acclaimed stage production of War Horse live in 4K to movie-goers in London's West End. The same year, Sony and Vue Entertainment teamed up to screen two matches of the summer's 2014 FIFA World Cup in 4K at Vue's prestigious Westfield multiplex. Building on this impressive track record, Sony Digital Cinema has recently announced a groundbreaking initiative in the UK with the National Theatre (NT) and leading exhibitor Vue Entertainment International to screen four NT Live stage productions for Vue audiences in 4K. A milestone in Event Cinema, this unique three-way partnership represents the first agreement of its kind between a leading cultural brand, a cinema chain and an electronics manufacturer. Over the next year, audiences at Vue cinemas across the UK will be able to enjoy a world-class cultural experience without travelling far from home. The four shows will be captured with

Sony industry leading 4K cameras, the PMW-F55, for screening as a 4K DCP across Vue's UK estate that is equipped exclusively with Sony 4K projection systems. "We've always been committed to give exhibitors and their patrons the absolute best possible picture quality" confirms David McIntosh. "Laser light source will be one of the game-changers in the industry in the near future. But it's got to significantly outperform other solutions that are already well proven, and it's got to be at a price that make commercial sense to exhibitors. When Sony does bring laser to market - at the right time, and the right price - we certainly won't disappoint our customers", says McIntosh. "In the meantime, we continue to support and evolve our best-selling family of industryleading projectors that will keep on giving audiences an amazing 4K experience for years to come."

Another Successful Year for Sony Digital Cinema

Sony comes to CinemaCon with news of exciting customer wins, a new 4K solution for large screens, more information on its vision for the future of the cinema industry - and a ground-breaking partnership to screen world-class drama from the National Theatre in Sony 4K to Vue cinema audiences. "It's been an exciting twelve months since our last visit to Las Vegas for CinemaCon", says David McIntosh, Vice President, Sony Digital Cinema 4K Solutions for Europe and the Americas. "We're seeing concrete sales momentum, with 'early adopters' looking to replace their first-

generation 2K projectors, alongside equipping brand new screens. "What's clear in all our conversations with customers is the priority they continue to place on all facets of Sony 4K image quality" notes McIntosh. "This isn't purely about brightness: operators also value the industryleading contrast ratio and colour that our R500 projector family delivers. It's an endorsement of our continuing strategy to deliver the highest-quality projection solutions on the market today and tomorrow." Sony 4K projection now gives audiences the best possible picture experience, from mid-sized theatres and boutique screens to major chains and large multiplexes. Introduced officially at CinemaCon, Sony's easy to use SRX-R515DS dual projection solution brings true 4K picture quality to larger screens. The SRX-R515DS combines two Sony SRX-R515 projectors to deliver a 30,000 lumen total output. This dual configuration delivers reference light levels for 2D presentation on screens up to 19.5m/ 64 feet for 14ft-L on white screen with 1.8 gain, or 3D on screens as large as 23m/75 feet for 4.5ft-L on silver screen with 2.4 gain (installation conditions dependent). Boasting on average an 8000:1 contrast ratio, the SRX-R515DS assures fabulous images with rich, deep blacks and sparkling highlights.

AAM & HTS Join Forces to Launch New Cinema Experience Cinema is set to become more personalised and engaging with the launch of CineCardz - a revolutionary way for cinema-goers to send a unique, personalised message to someone special via the big screen. With CineCardz, think greetings cards, think e-cards and now think bigger and better. Cinema software company Arts Alliance Media and cinema innovation specialists Highlands Technologies Solutions have joined forces to launch CineCardz, a product which allows cinema customers to book a personalised greeting for someone special in the audience to play out in front of a film screening of their choice. Arts Alliance Media will act as a worldwide partner for CineCardz. CineCardz makes a visit to your cinema even more special, providing a unique offering that further enhances the customer experience. CineCardz drives customer loyalty, increases frequency of cinema visits and increases incremental revenue. For the customer, they simply order a CineCardz through the dedicated website as part of a standard ticket purchasing process. Customers can upload a message that is then converted to a 30-second animation DCP (Digital Cinema Package), sent electronically to the relevant cinema and automatically inserted into the right place in the pre-show playlist. One CineCardz slot will be available for each scheduled screening at participating cinemas. For exhibitors using Arts Alliance Media's Theatre Management System Screenwriter, there will be nothing to install but just an option to activate free of charge. For the others, exhibitors simply need to install an internet-connected CineCardz box at each site. The box connects to the cinema server to manage insertion of the CineCardz content into the playlist and to collect playback logs in order to confirm the screening. CineCardz

operates on a revenue-share model, providing additional revenue to exhibitors as well as a more exciting experience for customers with no ongoing costs at all. The system uses a 2-step moderation process, first automated then validated by the exhibitor to ensure content matches exhibitor policy.

Vision Media Management & 3D Specialist Volfoni Announce Partnership Vision Media Management (VMM) and 3D specialist Volfoni announced they have partnered in a 3D glasses recycling program that will continue to serve a "green" initiative and remain environmentally conscious. Using its SmartCrystal Cinema product line, Volfoni has continued to gain more 3D customers, and have an expectation to cater to the growing demand. However, recycling and reducing their carbon footprint and limiting landfill deposits remains a priority. This is accomplished by utilising the services of VMM and their 3D glasses washing stations offering a low cost alternative which will cover North America by lowering shipping fees from the recycling/washing location. When Volfoni produces their high quality 3D passive glasses, they ship to VMM. VMM will continue to distribute to Volfoni clients, while also shipping the recycling bins to theatres. Glasses returned by consumers will be shipped back to VMM locations for cleaning and sterilization before being shipped back to theatres for additional usage. Being able to only reuse 100.000 glasses will already have an impact of almost two tons of plastic, not produced. "Working with Volfoni on this program is something Vision is very committed to" said Michael Alvarez, Jr., President and CEO at Vision Media Management. "Not only do we want to offer consumers the best possible way to view their 3D content with safe and clean glasses, but we want to be environmentally conscious. These special washing machines are the best way to accomplish both goals." "Volfoni has always made the commitment to our partners we would recycle our 3D glasses. We trusted Vision to distribute and collect our glasses in anticipation of this day" said Matt Garelik, MD

The same way Volfoni aims to reduce energy consumption with ever more light efficient 3D systems, we want to stop filling landfills with plastic."

Christie Offer Ultimate Visual Experience at Wanda's New Attractions Christie, the global leader in visual displays and audio technologies, installed close to 160 projectors at Wanda Movie Park and Han Show Theater. Known as the Wanda Movie Park and Han Show Theater, the twin attractions are developed by Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group and are located at opposite ends of the Wuhan Central Cultural District. The three-story Wanda Movie Park, whose architectural design is inspired by "chime bells" from the ancient Chu-Han period, is the first indoor movie theme park in the world. It contains six state-ofthe-art multi-dimensional movie rides zones covering different areas of film entertainment such as 4D cinema, 5D cinema, flight theatre, immersive theatre, interactive theatre and space theatre. On the other side, the red Chineselantern-shaped Han Show Theater is the ideal location for staging worldclass performances, including a new water show directed by theatre and performing arts maestro Franco Dragone - best known for the "Cirque du Soleil" shows. The venue combines aerial, aquatic and immersive stage performances to create an electrifying visual and sensory experience for audiences.

Both Wanda Movie Park and Han Show Theater are fitted with close to 160 Christie 1-chip and 3-chip DLP projectors with resolutions of up to 4K to provide the best possible visual and immersive experience for visitors. The installation of 'all Christie' visual solutions at both venues was undertaken by Christie China partners Wincomn Technology and Starlighting. At the same time, we're very pleased to work closely with our valued partners Wincomn Technology and Starlighting on the installations, and are optimistic that visitors transported to these exciting worlds are able to enjoy vivid adventures and performances in totally immersive environments." A spokesperson from Wanda Group added, "As a long-time user of Christie's visual solutions in our cinema multiplexes, we know that Christie delivers the best visual display solutions backed by reliability and performance. We are confident that Christie's solutions can deliver the exceptional visuals and performance which ensure that visitors to our attractions can experience the magic and excitement of immersive displays." Wanda Movie Park and Han Show Theater have been opened to the public since December 20, 2014. Income for both projects is projected to exceed RMB1.5 billion for 2015, setting a new record for Chinese cultural projects.

Moving iMage Technologies Introduces a New Division for the Cinema Exhibition Industry The Professional Cinema Enterprise Solutions (a Division of Moving iMage Technologies or MIT) will be anchored by Cinergy, a modular, cloud-based Cinema Enterprise suite of software tools for complete and secure management, reporting and visibility into your theatres and their assets. Centralized at the corporate level with regional and localised drilldown capabilities to any digital asset or existing software system, Cinergy provides you with the most comprehensive management of your cinema business. A product of joint marketing and development with Digital Cinema Implementation Partners (DCIP), Cinergy is backed by the most experienced and proven IT and software development professionals in the cinema industry. "Digital cinema was a huge leap forward in technology for our industry. Our initial focus was in the presentation of great pictures and sound. Having achieved the best presentation possible, we started to look at ways to leverage the new digital platform and the information it provides. Since the digital systems allow for electronic connectivity and generate voluminous amounts of invaluable data, exhibitors have expressed a strong interest in software tools that would enable them to leverage the digital connection and extract, collate and manage all of that data. Cinergy does this for exhibitors" says Joe Delgado, EVP Sales and Marketing for MIT. Richard Manzione, CEO of DCIP, states "Coming from an exhibition background, I know how critical it is to have the right kinds of information. A large amount of raw, unorganized data is just as invisible to management as no data at all. Our team, working with and listening to cinema operators, has developed a modular software solution that is easily customised for any size cinema

business. Cinergy cost-effectively scales to any exhibitor's particular needs and scope. Software is not a static proposition; our partnership with MIT will allow us to refine and innovate our products as our customers' business requirements change and evolve." Together with Cinergy, another anchor product of the Professional Cinema Enterprise Solutions Division is Cine-QC. This operations tool not only expands the usability of the digital cinema network but also provides a digital logging and accountability platform that has long been needed in our industry. CineQC utilizes low cost tablets to permit wireless projection, sound and auditorium control as well as Near Field Communications (NFC) tags to create time-stamp and proof-oflocation verification. Checklists and service tickets are also a function of the CineQC platform to improve presentation quality and facility supervision. "The CineQC platform really improves operational efficiency and accountability, taking full advantage of the capabilities that digital cinema enables. The NFC tag verification requires that the operations or security personnel be present at a given location to perform their checklists or system adjustment; this is a key feature of the patentpending system" says Bevan Wright, EVP of Operations at MIT. MIT is a manufacturer and integrator of purpose built technology and equipment to support a wide variety of entertainment applications with a focus on motion picture exhibition. MIT offers a wide range of products and services such as custom engineering, systems design, integration and installation, digital technology solutions for 3D, digital cinema, A/V integration as well as customized solutions for emerging entertainment technology. MIT's Rydt Entertainment Systems Division

provides turnkey FFE solutions for new construction and remodels to include procurement, design, consulting, installation, and project management. Based in Fountain Valley California, our 28,000 square foot facility is home to corporate offices, engineering, manufacturing, distribution, integration as well as service and support divisions. Its primary manufacturing and warehouse location is augmented by a global network of service partners and OEM manufacturers. Digital Cinema Implementation Partners, LLC (DCIP) is a joint venture owned equally by exhibition industry leaders AMC Entertainment Inc., Cinemark Holdings, Inc. and Regal Entertainment Group, representing more than 15,000 screens in the United States. Formed in February 2007 to facilitate the rollout of a digital cinema infrastructure, the company has expanded its operations to include new administrative and software services aimed at streamlining the operations and interactions of exhibitors and distributors. DCIP is headquartered in Mahwah, N.J. with offices in Minneapolis and Denver.

Volfoni Welcomes RealD's UM Patent Invalidation in Russia The Russian Patent Office invalidated RealD's Utility Model ("UM") Patent 138095, finding that this UM patent brought no innovation to 3D technology and lacked novelty. "We are pleased that the Russian Patent Office has rejected RealD's wrongful attempt to suppress competition and threaten 3D cinema integrators and exhibitors. This decision allows 3D exhibitors, integrators and manufacturers to concentrate on the quality of the cinema experience and not on legal gamesmanship." says Alain Chamaillard, Volfoni's Managing Director for EMEA, CIS & Russia. To hold that position without compromising standards is not hard. Dolby's tools simply have to provide a standards-compliant object-based audio output (presumably MDA) for non-Dolby systems. This would explain Dolby's keen participation in establishing the standardized object audio model. The object model is the only part of the standards effort that Dolby need to concern itself with, as it plans to implement it as a secondary output. As pointed out in October 2013 in Would Someone Speak Up About Where Immersive Sound Is Going, the real battle of immersive sound will be in the mixing room, not in a standards committee.

Part 1

Storage Options for Digital Cinema The phenomenon of digital cinema has brought new challenges related to storage solutions. We bring you a three-part series on storage options for digital cinema. In Part 1, we introduce you to modern digital cinema and hard disk drives.

Modern Digital Cinema Digital cinema has become the dominant theatrical display technology worldwide, displacing older film-based display. Most modern distributed media content is done in a digital format. This content is ingested into a server system in a digital theatre complex. This server system then distributes this content to integrated media blocks (IMBs) located in individual projectors. The integrated media block converts encrypted high resolution content from the server into a format that the projector can display. Putting the IMB inside the projector prevents raw

high-resolution content from ready access and copying. Additional security measures within the projector make this raw content even more secure.

(Direct Attached Storage, DAS) or via Ethernet (Network Attached Storage, NAS). Control in both configurations is via an Ethernet line connected to the theater network.

These IMBs may have some onboard digital storage for the projected content, as shown in Figure 1, or they may use external storage for this content as shown in Figure 2. In Figure 1, content streaming is done directly from the IMB internal storage. In Figure 2, the encrypted content is streamed to the IMB from the external storage using eSATA

Because of the size of the media files used in modern theatres, typically 90-300 GB in size, hard disk drives (HDDs) are the most common storage technology used. Hard disk drives can provide fast sequential data flows important in video streaming applications and they are also more cost effective than other technologies, such as flash memory.

• TECHNOLOGY • This servo information is used by the HDD electronics to determine the location of the head and to guide it where it needs to go using the rotary motor to write or read information. Because the HDD is very sensitive to Figure 3 - Major Components of a Hard Disk Drive even very small amounts of contamination, it is kept Hard Disk Drives Used in a very clean enclosure that in Digital Cinema prevents tiny particles and other contamination from entering the Because digital cinema files can be drive casing. quite large, it is more cost effective to put this content on hard disk drives (HDDs) than on solid-state storage. The two most common sizes of HDDs are 2.5-inch form factor and 3.5-inch form factor. In addition to the physical size of the HDD, they can also differ in the data interfaces used, as well as other characteristics such as the rotations per minute (RPM). Common HDD interfaces are SATA (Serial ATA) and SAS (Serial Attached SCSI). Hard disk drives write and read information on rotating rigid disks in concentric tracks using read/write heads attached to stainless steel suspensions. These suspensions are mounted to an e-block that is moved by a rotary motor to bring the heads across the disk surfaces. Each side of the disk can have these recorded tracks. These tracks are broken up into annular regions called sectors. There is servo information written in the sector headers that the read/write head can detect as it passes over the disk surface.

Figure 3 shows the internal structure and major components in a HDD. 3.5-inch HDDs have larger disks inside them than 2.5-inch disk drives. In general, 3.5-inch HDDs can have a larger capacity than 2.5-inch HDDs because the disk surface where the data is stored is greater for the 3.5-inch HDD and also because common HDD case heights for 3.5-inch HDDs is higher than 2.5-inch HDDs and thus they can contain more disks. As a consequence of having a larger surface area for storing data per disk and with a larger number of disks, 3.5-inch HDDs can have a greater storage capacity than a 2.5-inch HDD. As a result, the cost of digital storage in $/TB of storage capacity is about 2 X less for a 3.5-inch HDD than a 2.5-inch HDD. The 2.5-inch HDD thus has more than a 50% higher $/TB price than a 3.5-inch HDD.

HDDs are electromechanical devices and there are components in a HDD that can wear out and fail with use and time. HDDs are often designed for a five-year service life (even if the warranty period is less than) so the incidence of failure of the majority of HDDs used for their intended purpose should be low for at least 5 years. HDDs are designed for assumed application and usage conditions for these failure rates. Some HDD are made for high usage and long power-on hour applications that may be common in enterprise storage systems. Examples of these types of high usage and long power-on hour HDDs are some of the products in the Cinemastar product line from HGST (a division of Western Digital) and the Enterprise Performance HDDs from Seagate. Enterprise storage systems combine a number of HDDs together in an array with almost continuous power and frequent writing and reading of data. Other HDDs may be designed for personal computer application where the yearly power on hours is less than for enterprise applications because these HDDs tend to be used for fewer hours per day (e.g. about 8 hours per day). In addition, HDDs in personal computers are subject to less frequent writing and reading of information because these devices are serving individual users rather than the many simultaneous users common for an enterprise storage array. There are also special HDDs that may be designed for particular applications, such as those in a home digital video recorder or for video surveillance recording.

Global Cinema Box Office

Sets New Record The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc (MPAA) released its annual Theatrical Market Statistics Report for 2014. The report shows global box office receipts for all films released around the world reached $36.4 billion in 2014, an increase of 1% over the previous record in 2013. Asia Pacific region increased 12% compared to 2013, driving the international growth. The Motion Picture Association of America, Inc (MPAA) released its annual Theatrical Market Statistics Report for 2014. The report shows that global box office receipts for all films released around the world reached $36.4 billion in 2014, an increase of 1% over the previous record in 2013. Growth continued to be driven by a dramatic expansion in the Asia Pacific region, which was up by 12% overall, including China, which jumped 34% and became the first international market to exceed $4 billion in box office ($4.8 billion total). The global growth occurred despite a drop in the US/Canada box office, which at $10.4 billion was down 5%. "In the past few years, more people than ever before around the world are going to their local cinemas to see movies made by filmmakers in the United States and all around the globe," MPAA Chairman and CEO Senator Chris Dodd said. "This is not just an

American story of success, but a worldwide story about the value of craft, creativity and the importance of a story well told. We tell stories that transcend borders and transform individual experiences into shared ones. 2014 was a strong year, and 2015 is starting out tremendously, with box office in the US/Canada up 11 percent in the first two months of this year."

Asia Pacific Emerges the Star Performer In 2014, the Asia Pacific region ($12.4 billion) increased 12% compared to 2013, driving the international increase and remaining the largest region in terms of international box office for the second year in a row. Chinese box office increased 34% in US dollars to $4.8 billion, becoming the first market outside US/Canada to exceed $4 billion in box office revenue.

Latin America box office increased 2% (an increase of $60 million), less than in previous years due to decreases in larger markets such as Mexico (-5%) and Argentina (-20%). Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) box office decreased 3% from 2013, due to decreases in larger European markets such as Germany (-7%) and the UK (-1%). Total cinema screens increased 6% worldwide in 2014 to over 142,000, due in large part to continued double digit growth in the Asia Pacific region (+15%).

Global Digital Cinema Global digital cinema continues to grow (+14%), although the rate of growth is slower relative to prior years. 90% of the world's cinema screens are now digital, up 7 percentage points from 2013 (83%). Among individual regions, Africa/Middle East has the lowest percentage of digital screens at 77%. Growth in digital 3D screens in 2014 continued for all regions, and pace of global growth (22%) increased for the first time since 2007. The global portion of 3D digital screens increased to 51% from 47% in 2013. In 2014, the 3D digital proportion of total digital screens in the Asia Pacific region grew to exceed two thirds (70%), and was higher than any other region.

Trends in US / Canada Additionally, the report showed that films released in the US/Canada by MPAA member studios increased for the first time in five years, reaching 136 in 2014. Total films and total films released by non-MPAA member studios also increased from 2013 (up 7% and 5%, respectively).

Frequent moviegoers who go to the cinema once a month or more continue to drive the movie industry, accounting for 51% of all tickets sold the US/Canada. Despite an increase in frequent moviegoers in 2014, the number of tickets purchased by frequent moviegoers, occasional and infrequent moviegoers all decreased in 2014 compared to 2013. However, movie theatres continue to draw more people than all theme parks and major US sports combined. The average cinema ticket price increased by 4 cents (less than 1%) in 2014, less than the 2% increase in inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI). A movie still provides the most affordable entertainment option, costing under $40 for a family of four. The percentage of 2014 moviegoers was highest in Texas (75%), 7 percentage points above the national average, followed by California (73%), and Florida (71%). Texas, California, and Florida also had the highest proportions of frequent moviegoers. The gender composition of moviegoers (people who went to a movie at the cinema at least once in the year) in 2014 skewed slightly more towards women than the overall population, while tickets sold continued to be split evenly between both genders. Gender shares of population, moviegoers and tickets sold are identical to 2013.

Nepal’s First Meyer Sound

Cine de Chef Cine de Chef theatre installs first Meyer Sound cinema in Nepal at two of its luxury screens. The systems create such realism and excitement that they have given the cinema a clear competitive edge.

Movie fans can now listen to Nepal’s first Meyer Sound cinema installations in Cine de Chef theatre’s two luxury screening rooms. According to theatre management, the systems create such realism and excitement that they have given the cinema a clear competitive edge.

“The quality heard through our Meyer Sound systems is by far the best in Nepal, and is easily distinguishable from any other system in the region,” says Gaurav Goel, managing director of Cine de Chef. “The clarity and precision of the sound is the most amazing I have ever experienced.

I’m also very impressed by the low end - most Bollywood movies have high-impact action sequences with multiple bass effects, and certainly our customers have never experienced them like this before.” The systems are installed in the 169-seat CineTheater and the

Golden Village Tampines

Celebrating 19 Years of Entertainment After 19 years of creating movie magic in the East, Golden Village Tampines reopens following a short hiatus on April 20, 2015. The revamped cinema now boasts a sleek new interior, an auto-gate system and automated ticketing kiosks, giving patrons a quicker, seamless cinematic experience from the very moment they step into the cinema. All eight halls in Golden Village Tampines now come equipped with the award-winning ProBax seats. The ProBax seat is the seat of choice for Golden Village as it ensures patrons enjoy prolonged comfort and improved posture. The patented ProBax technology reconfigures the

foam structure within the seat base to encourage an anatomically correct posture in the seat occupant, removing the slumped posture often created in foam-based seats. This in turn leads to reduced back ache and decreased muscle fatigue which improves concentration levels and minimises fidgeting. "Golden Village strives to continuously upgrade and improve our cinemas and since 2010, we have undertaken various renovations and upgrading of our cinemas. Patrons' comfort is of utmost importance to us and it is always encouraging to see them enjoy our new space and its improved amenities. Golden Village

Tampines has been around for close to two decades and is a heartland gem to many. We hope the new upgrade will offer regular GV Tampines patrons a pleasurable cinema experience," said Ms. Clara Cheo, Chief Executive Officer, Golden Village Multiplex Pte Ltd. Having been an integral venue for Golden Village for the past 19 years, the opening celebration saw all things 19! On the opening day, the first 190 customers to walk-in and purchase a pair of tickets each received an additional pair of complimentary movie passes and a tray of Nachos! Long queue formed as early as 9 am on the morning of April 20, 2015 and happy customers walked away with their complimentary tickets, a tray of nachos and a swanky new movie experience.
