T HEATREWORLD EDITORIAL

Issue # 90 March-May 2021

Could you possibly imagine that it's been a year since our last magazine issue? Well, Yes it is! The COVID-19 pandemic did no justice to not just the world; and but precisely talking about -The cinema Exhibition Industry. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on the film industry in 2020, mirroring its impacts across all sectors. The cinema market, on the other hand, had to take a huge hit last year and exhibitors don't wish to be forecasting any revenues to recover that were of the pre-pandemic levels as before. Across the world and to varying degrees, cinemas and movie theatres have been closed, festivals have been cancelled or postponed, and film releases have been moved to future dates or delayed indefinitely. Due to cinemas and movie theatres closing, the global box office dropped by billions of dollars, streaming has seen a significant rise on the graph as well as in terms of popularity with the stock of film exhibitors dropping dramatically on the other side. Many blockbusters originally scheduled to be released since Mid-March of 2020 have been postponed or cancelled around the world, with film productions also halted. And amidst this, was the re-entry of the ever golden 'Drive-In Era'! The long-lost madness for movie-viewing did manage to give it a greater comeback today concerning the concept of safety and precautionary measures. Although the complete production and content being behind mere closed doors, the cinemas played re-runs of the movies and we surely did have the audience keeping up the spirit to continue having their share of the moviegoing experience. With the patrons all safe and sound in their respective locomotives, the cinemas were promised to still kick-in alive providing their patrons with a truck load of snacks and peaceful evening to look at. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered restrictions on cinema exhibition industry that not only disheartened moviegoers, but axed several thousand jobs and costed the industry estimated 5,000 crore in revenue. For what it's worth, cinemas have a list of legally-binding precautions that they must abide by where they are allowed to open. The safety protocols are based on five tenets: Face Masks, Zero Contact, Physical Distancing, Temperature Checks, and Relentless Sanitisation. #MoviesOnBigScreenAlwaysTheBestExperience has been the official 'Save Cinemas' handle ever since the pandemic took over our moviegoing experiences we now cherish. But, here's the twist… The Cinema Life is back! And with 100% occupancy. With movies doing exceptionally well, the theatres are all ready to rock its screens with newer properties, locations and all the more promising movies to set the ball rolling. Cinema giants spreading their wings faster and wider by time, patrons have better options to look at and choose their favourite cravings right from flavoured popcorn to gourmet star dishes on the house. Now, who else could pamper you this way? Needless to say, movies always seem the best on big screens… Raghavendra T Editor-Publisher

Christie Projectors Light up Oxford and Sunset Drive-Ins

In the face of the global pandemic, local drive-in movie theatres have been reinvigorated, attracting visitors eager to enjoy a night out. Christie digital cinema projectors are lighting up these screens, including the Oxford Drive-In in Woodstock, Ontario and the Sunset Drive-In in Dryden, Ontario. Angila Peters and Adam Shaw, owners of the Oxford Drive-In, bought the theatre in the Spring. But the purchase was a long-time in the making, says Peters. "Adam once tried to buy it when he was in his early twenties, and it fell through last minute. He has always wanted to own it - then COVID hit and drive-ins started making the news again, and he simply thoughthere is a great opportunity to own it and give people a feeling of getting out and being entertained." Like the Peters', Mike and Cathy Langlais opened the Sunset Drive-In Theatre in Dryden, Ontario during the pandemic. It was a family affair, involving their grown children and grandfather Reg. Grandparents Reg and Yvonne, who has since passed, were the original owners, operators and projectionists of the theatre, which opened in 1978 and then later sold. But the drive-in is now back with the Langlais family, when they repurchased it in May.

March-May 2021

Both theatres are using Christie projectors to light up the screens. "The Christie projector has been amazing - the clarity of the picture is beautiful," says Peters. Adds Mitchell Pateman, projectionist and technical specialist at the Sunset Drive-In Theatre, "We upgraded our projection system to the Christie CP4230, and couldn't be happier. We decided to go for the 4K unit as we wanted to be as future-proof as possible. Shining on our 70x30 foot screen, it looks amazing in both scope and flat!" The drive-in renaissance has continued into the fall, with guests enjoying movies in a safe, sociallydistanced environment. Says Peters of the community's reaction, "The response has been very positive and supportive. Our drive-in was closed for six years, so no one likely expected it to be reopened. It was a nice surprise for everyone, and they've put their support behind us." "The community response has been amazing," adds Pateman. Along with the new Christie projector, Sunset also upgraded its concessions and admissions booth, as well as a new FM transmitter. "We've had a great turnout overall, and guests have commented on the bright, clear image of the new projector."

New Cinema Star Multiplex Selects Christie Projectors The Cinema Star, a new state-of-the-art multiplex located in the Kvartal West multipurpose center on Aminyevskoye Shosse in Moscow, opened its doors recently. The capital's new theatre is the first Dolby Atmos cinema to also feature the Christie CP4440-RGB projector with Real|Laser illumination

technology. "Asia Cinema has fitted more than 1,000 sites, but this project was a particularly great experience for me. Each of the multiplex's six screens features multichannel Dolby Atmos sound combined with Christie projection equipment. Screen 1 was equipped with a Christie CP4440-RGB 4K RGB laser projector. RGB laser technology offers viewers true-to-life images with incredible brightness and clarity. It also helps theatre operators to reduce their electricity costs," said Anna Miroshnichenko, a project manager for systems integrator Asia Cinema. "Cinema Star's new multiplex is a great example of how cinemas can install both state-of-the art equipment like Christie RGB pure laser illumination for a premium customer experience as well as Christie xenon lamp-based projectors, proven for their reliability and value to exhibitors," said Brian Claypool, executive vice president, Cinema, at Christie. Christie RealLaser cinema projectors with solid-state illumination are opening up a new frontier in cinema exhibition. What makes these models stand out is their expanded color space, which comes close to reaching the Rec.2020 standard, and their longevity (the projectors offer more than 50,000 hours of performance with no loss of brightness: levels exceed the DCI specification

throughout the equipment's operational lifetime). "We chose Christie projectors for this theatre. We have been working with the company for years, and have found it to be an excellent manufacturer," says Leonid Yakovlev, Technical Director of the Cinema Star chain. "Every consideration was made to ensure cinemagoers' comfort in all 616 seats. Yury Mishin, Chief Equipment Engineer at Cinema Star, added: "From Christie's wide range of technology, we opted for digital projectors for our screens. When compared to cinema projectors with similar specifications from other manufacturers, Christie projectors stand out for their ease of use, reliability and maintainability. I would also note the exceptional quality of the xenon lamps." The choice of Christie RealLaser technology for the Cinema Star multiplex was no accident: "We reviewed the market for cinema projectors with laser illumination and concluded that there were simply no other contenders in the RGB lighting system segment. We hope to use these projectors for many years to come, and that they prove to be a cost-effective choice," adds Yury. "Cinema Star is a long-standing Christie partner, and two thirds of the chain's screens are already equipped with our projectors. We have been collaborating for nearly a decade now, and we are delighted that Cinema Star has chosen Christie equipment and our flagship CP4440-RGB projector with RealLaser illumination technology for its new screen", added Anna Vostretsova, Christie's Business Development Manager in Russia. The multiplex in Kvartal West on Aminyevskoye Shosse is the chain's thirtieth theatre.

IMAX Soars to Record-Breaking Chinese New Year Opening Weekend IMAX Corporation soared to its bestever opening weekend for the Chinese New Year holiday, grossing $25 million through February 14 as the country kicks off its pinnacle box office period. Despite a continued capacity limitation of at least 75% across China, IMAX grew opening weekend box office a whopping 45% over its record-breaking 2019, when Chinese cinemas were last open for the holiday. Shot entirely with IMAX cameras, ‘Detective Chinatown 3’ led the way with $23.5 million - IMAX's biggest three-day opening weekend ever for a Chinese film. Remarkably, Friday marked the first time ever that IMAX has recorded more than one million admissions in a single day in any global market - China or otherwise. "Given our recent success at the Chinese box office we suspected our fans would turn out for Chinese New Year in a big way, but these early returns have blown away even our most optimistic projections," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "With record-breaking box office, strong market share, and multiple releases Filmed In IMAX, this is an important milestone on our road to recovery at the global box office and our long, successful history in China." IMAX's record-breaking results were highlighted by stunning performance of ‘Detective Chinatown 3,’ the latest entry in

the popular comedy adventure franchise initially slated to debut in the 2020 Chinese New Year holiday. ‘Detective Chinatown 3’ now holds IMAX records for the biggest opening weekend and opening day for a Chinese film, as well as biggest opening weekend and opening day for Chinese New Year. ‘Detective Chinatown 3’ also now holds the record in China for most IMAX admissions in a single day (Friday) with 975,000. IMAX captured 6% of the film's weekend box office, despite accounting for only 1% of overall screens. For the first time, the Chinese New Year slate featured two releases Filmed In IMAX, including ‘Detective Chinatown 3,’ which was filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, and ‘A Writer's Odyssey,’ which features more than an hour of IMAX exclusive expanded aspect ratio. Rounding out the IMAX slate is ‘New Gods: Nezha Reborn,’ a new animated franchise. All three films scored high with audiences, with Maoyan scores exceeding 8.8. "IMAX is on the leading edge of the strong box office recovery in China, with audiences emerging from the pandemic and seeking out the most immersive theatrical experience in the world," Edwin Tan, CEO of IMAX China. "We'd like to congratulate our partners at Wanda, Huace Film, Light Chaser Animation and Alibaba Pictures, and thank them for bringing these films to fans in The IMAX Experience." Thanks to its strategic effort to embrace local language film-making, grow its network, and strengthen its brand in China, IMAX continues to make a significant comeback at the Chinese box office. IMAX has grossed $126 million since theatres first reopened in China last July - with box office up 28% in December and 140% in January alone - despite continued capacity limitations across the country and a lack of Hollywood films in the market.

TOHO-IMAX Announce Historic Five-Picture Slate Agreement, Japan

TOHO and IMAX Corporation recently announced a landmark slate agreement to release five current and forthcoming TOHO films in IMAX theatres - significantly expanding the companies' longstanding partnership across distribution and exhibition. The new agreement marks IMAX's biggest slate deal to date with a film studio outside Hollywood and includes, as of October 19, the number-one film in the world "Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train" (distributed by TOHO and Aniplex) - which topped the Japanese box office last weekend with $44 million 3-day gross, including $2.3 million in IMAX from 38 screens. ‘Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train’ now holds the all-time IMAX opening weekend box office record in Japan despite seating capacity restrictions. The agreement also includes the highly anticipated ‘STAND BY ME Doraemon 2’ (TOHO) arriving in theatres on November 20. The term of the agreement spans at least through 2021 and includes three forthcoming films to be announced. Additional terms were not disclosed. "We have been deepening our relationship with IMAX since 2016's ‘Shin-Godzilla’ release, and I am confident to say that our partnership has been further strengthened with the release of ‘Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train’ released on Friday, October 16," said Yoshishige Shimatani, President of TOHO. "Japanese movies continue evolving, and have achieved the quality suitable for IMAX theatres as seen in

‘Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train’ and upcoming ‘STAND BY ME Doraemon 2’. We are very pleased to be able to provide our customers with new, exciting ways to experience our movies in IMAX through this slate deal." "IMAX and TOHO partnered to bring their first IMAX theatre to Japan in 2014, and we are honored to further our long-standing relationship with the company and its executives through this multi-picture film agreement," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "Japan continues to grow as a successful market for IMAX, as local language hits like TOHO's 'Demon Slayer’ deliver strong box office returns and offset the current lack of Hollywood films in the market". The new agreement builds on the longstanding successful distribution partnership between IMAX and TOHO, the highest-grossing distributor and the largest film production company in Japan. In 2019, IMAX and TOHO partnered on the animated blockbuster ‘Weathering With You,’ which went on to become the highest grossing Japanese language film in IMAX, earning $7.7 million. Additionally, IMAX and TOHO partnered on the 2016 release of ‘Shin-Godzilla’ (2016), which saw $.5.7 million. TOHO's exhibition arm, TOHO Cinemas has also worked with IMAX for years to bring immersive, otherworldly experiences to moviegoers, starting when the two companies announced the first IMAX theatre ever to Shinjuku, Tokyo in 2014. TOHO Cinemas opened its latest IMAX theatre in Tachikawa, Tokyo, bringing the total number of TOHO Cinemas IMAX theatres in Japan to 8. As its vibrant film industry expands, Japan continues to grow as a key market for IMAX. In 2019, IMAX set a new yearly record at the Japanese box office with $62 million highlighted by the record-breaking performance of ‘Weathering With You’ and Fox's ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ IMAX's highest grossing release ever in Japan with $14 million. Recently,

TW-12

March-May 2021

Japan saw the highest 4-day opening weekend for Christopher Nolan's ‘Tenet’ while IMAX has captured an unprecedented 27% of box office for the film across the country. ‘Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train’ is an adaptation of the incredibly popular ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’ by Koyoharu Got ge (original comics sold over 100 million copies) and with animation production by Ufotable. In theatres now in Japan, ‘Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train’ follows Tanjiro Kamado and his friends from the Demon Slayer corps. as they join Ky jur Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, to investigate a mysterious series of disappearances occurring inside a train. To date, the film has grossed $102.5 million (JPY 10.75B), including $5.7m (JPY 596m) from 38 IMAX theatres. ‘STAND BY ME Doraemon 2’ is a sequel to the 2014 CG anime film ‘STAND BY ME Doraemon’. The film follows Doraemon, a cat-shaped robot from the 22nd century and Nobita Nobi, a young boy. One day, Nobita finds a teddy bear that was repaired by his grandmother when he was little. Recalling his beloved grandmother, Nobita convinces Doraemon to go back in time to see her on the condition that they return immediately without meeting in person. Earlier this month, its theme song by Masaki Suda was also announced by the two companies.

QUBE & Scrabble Bring Electronic Movie Delivery to the Middle East across 14 Countries Qube Cinema and Scrabble Entertainment are happy to announce that they have brought electronic delivery to movie theatres in the Middle East with the installation of Qube's WireTAP. The WireTAP is a cloud-connected, in-theatre appliance that allows automated delivery of DCPs and

KDMs directly over the internet. Exhibitors currently connected to the network include VOX Cinemas, Cinema City, Flix Cinemas, Roxy Cinemas, Mukta A2, Reel Cinemas, Cine Royal Cinemas, Oscar Cinemas, Empire Cinemas, CineCo, Star Cinemas, Cinepolis, Muvi Cinemas and other Independents. Over 60% of theatres in the region are already equipped with WireTAPs, with the remaining locations including Novo Cinemas expected to be covered in the coming months. Most of the region was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of the year, but distributors have used the network to deliver big tentpoles and library titles across the region as theatres have reopened. Now, more than ever, distributors and exhibitors appreciate that electronic delivery is automatic and contact-free with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. Speaking of their satisfaction with the success of the electronic deliveries, Cameron Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer of Majid Al Futtaim Cinemas and Majid Al Futtaim Leisure & Entertainment said, "Majid Al Futtaim has always remained at the forefront of innovation regionally, continually embracing new technologies to allow VOX Cinemas to deliver an exceptional customer experience. Qube WireTAP is a revolutionary technology for the distribution of digital cinema packages (DCPs) and, VOX Cinemas has successfully integrated the platform across four of our markets. We see the electronic delivery system as having numerous benefits to allow seamless movie distribution to our theatres regionally." Qube and Scrabble are particularly proud of the electronic delivery of movies in the Kingdom of

Saudi Arabia (KSA), as theatres in the country have only recently been permitted to operate commercially. Qube Wire has helped enable rapid modernisation and expansion of cinema in the KSA. Currently, 75% of KSA theatres are connected to Qube Wire, as well as the country's censor board, the General Commission on Audio-visual Media (GCAM). Qube Wire allows distributors to book and monitor content delivery in real-time. Qube Wire electronically delivers movies to most locations in under 8 hours, and certified, regional hard drive partners can deliver hard drives to locations that are not yet connected to our electronic network. The whole process is simple, fast, and secure. Speaking of how the service adds value to the current challenges, Nigel Dennis, Senior Vice President, Sales says, "We have tried to take advantage of the time that the pandemic has given us to work on ways to bring about a real change in the way content is moved. So far, studios and distributors of all sizes have been really happy with our service, and we'll continue soliciting their feedback to improve how we work together in future."

QSC announces two new audio, video, and control processors native to the Q-SYS Ecosystem - the smaller Q-SYS Core 8 Flex and Q-SYS Core Nano. Driven by the proliferation of networked endpoints and the expanding processing needs of a wider variety of spaces and topologies, the Core 8 Flex includes on board analog audio I/O and GPIO plus network I/O while the Q-SYS Core Nano offers network-only audio I/O processing and control. Built on the same flexible and scalable software foundation as the rest of the Q-SYS processor portfolio, including the best-in-class Q-SYS Core 110c, these new Cores expand design options to meet a wider variety of cinema applications including 5.1/7.1 and immersive audio rooms, arcade gaming areas, background/foreground music for food service areas, event rooms and much more. The Q-SYS Core 8 Flex includes a 64 x 64 networked I/O channel capacity with eight on board FLEX audio channels and eight GPIOs to quickly and easily integrate analog audio and control devices into the Q-SYS Ecosystem. Q-SYS Core Nano offers the same 64 x 64 networked

audio I/O without the on board analog I/O to support installations with smaller spaces with centralized processing and fully networked endpoints. Both of these new Q-SYS Core processors occupy a smaller half-width, 1RU footprint and include pre-installed 8 x 8 Softwarebased Dante audio channels (license upgradeable up to 32 x 32 channels), driverless USB audio, and AV bridging capabilities. These smaller Core processors utilise the same, robust software-based architecture, control engine and design software suite (Q-SYS Designer Software) as the rest of the Q-SYS Core processing portfolio. They both offer powerful and scalable DSP processing, video routing and bridging for web conferencing, as well as third-party endpoint integration without the need for separate dedicated control processors. "These new processors join a growing Ecosystem of AV&C processors built on a flexible software foundation that deliver features and functionality without relying on dedicated, single-purpose hardware," says Barry Ferrell, Senior Director, Cinema Product Development, QSC. "They are our most cost-effective cores yet, giving installers the ability to choose either a single Core 8 Flex or Core Nano for each room in a multiplex, or choose to run several 5.1/7.1 rooms from one single Core without compromising on features or performance." "The introduction of these two new Core processors bring even more design flexibility to the Q-SYS Ecosystem, delivering on the promise of a standards-based software platform that can easily scale-up or scale-out. I'm proud of the innovation and engineering strength of our research and development teams, who continue to deliver solutions that meet the evolving needs of the markets we serve, while reducing complexity and cost for our partners and customers," says Jatan Shah, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Office and Technology Officer, QSC.

South Korean CGV Cinema Embraces Alcons Advantages a cleaner sound than from other systems'. They made an instant decision after the demo to choose the Alcons system."

European cinema chains have long known about the benefits of the highest quality, most consistent sound which Alcons pro-ribbon systems bring their audiences. As the word has spread across the world, movie theatres in an everincreasing number of countries are embracing the advantages of Alcons Audio. The latest is in South Korea. Located in the city of Paju, South Korea, CGV Paju Yadang is the latest movie theatre in South Korea opened by CJ CGV - the country's largest multiplex cinema chain and the fifth largest in the world. It has five auditoriums, all with comfortable recliner chairs and Barco laser projectors. "They were very satisfied with the Alcons Audio demo, saying 'We love the HF from the pro-ribbon tweeter and could definitely hear a cleaner sound than from other systems' Kang, Head engineer YuYukorea. The main auditorium features an Alcons proribbon system, specified and supplied by specialist cinema company Yuyukorea Co., Ltd, based in Seoul. It was installed by the company's head engineer, Kang. "We helped the customer with A/B demonstrations of different systems," he says. "They were very satisfied with the Alcons Audio demo, saying 'We love the HF from the pro-ribbon tweeter and could definitely hear

The system comprises three CR4 (3x RBN401 4" HF, 2x 6.5" MF, 2x 15" LF) large-format screen systems for the main left, centre, right channels, with two CB362 (2x 18") high-output fullsize subwoofer systems and 18 CRS8 (1x RBN401 4" HF, 1x 8" LF) mediumformat reference surround. The system is powered and controlled by two Sentinel3 and two Sentinel10 amplified loudspeaker controllers. "It is very rare in South Korea that an independent movie theatre chain chooses high-end audio like an Alcons pro-ribbon system, but the customer is very happy," says Kang. "It is not only the quality they feel and hear from the system, but also the response of moviegoers." "Staff from other cinema chains in South Korea have visited CGV Paju Yadang to hear the auditorium with an Alcons pro-ribbon system and the client is actively considering using Alcons Audio again for his next project," Kang continues. "They have already said that they should have installed the other rooms at CGV Paju Yadang with Alcons as well!"

Prestigious DGA Theatre Upgrades to Dolby Atmos with Meyer Sound Cinema The Directors Guild of America recently completed a total renovation of its flagship motion picture exhibition space at the prestigious DGA Theatre in Los Angeles. Guided by a Guild committee of six leading filmmakers, the renewal project has moved the 600-seat theatre to the forefront of cinema technology with installation of custom-built Dolby Vision laser projection and a Dolby Atmos immersive sound system

encompassing more than 70 Meyer Sound cinema loudspeakers. To translate their creative concepts into design specifics, the Guild committee engaged the noted Gensler architectural firm. In turn, Gensler assigned the critical role of audiovisual specification and engineering to Tom Schindler, senior vice president at the San Franciscobased Salter consulting firm. From the outset, explains Schindler, the committee had insisted on the absolute highest level of audio reproduction. "We first measured the acoustics of the room, but this element was well done with the original design. Background noise and reverberation both were well within standards. So the critical factor came down to loudspeaker selection." Working in consultation with Dolby engineers Jose Castellon and Gary Meissner, Schindler drafted a comprehensive performance specification with options for different loudspeaker manufacturers. Drawing on their unique perspectives as filmmakers, the Guild committee members insisted on a live audition in order to make a final decision. "When the speaker system decision was going to be made, we decided that, no, we're not going to decide this just on the printed specs," recalled one committee member, director Michael Mann, in a recent DGA interview. "We wanted the systems set up for an audition. We wanted to hear how they would sound as we moved around the space." Meyer Sound and one other maker brought in front screen channel systems for a comparative listening session attended by Mann and another key member of the committee, director Michael Apted. Each system was tuned by manufacturer representatives for peak performance. The Dolby representatives consulted with the DGA team in selecting a broad range of licensed soundtrack excerpts to evaluate dialogue clarity, effects impact, and musicality. "Everyone coalesced around similar impressions," recalls Schindler. "On a

fair chunk of content it was difficult to say one was clearly better than the other. Each system had its relative strengths, but on a greater portion of the overall content the Meyer Sound system was judged to be superior." Explained Michael Mann, "Both systems were technically spot on, but Michael Apted and I picked the Meyer Sound system because of a difference in emotional musicality. You can listen to two or three sound systems and, even though they are technically very close, one sounds emotionally more musical than another. These are the kinds of decisions any of us on the committee would make if they were being made on a film. It was great to be able to think and execute the same way in designing how the film is exhibited." Anchoring the five front screen channels of the system are five Acheron 100 loudspeakers, each paired with an Acheron LF low frequency extension loudspeaker. The main LFE channels receive potent reproduction from twelve X 800C cinema subwoofers, aided by eight 750 LFC low frequency control elements for surround bass management. Surround channels are assigned to a cohort of 22 HMS 12 and 32 HMS 15 self-powered surround loudspeakers. A GALAXY 816 network platform supplies processing for the front screen channel systems. Integration and installation of all audio and video systems was contracted to Diversified's Media & Entertainment group under the guidance of Director of Engineering Adam Salkin and Project Manager Eugene Tuzkov. Viewed from the integrator's perspective, Meyer Sound's exclusive Intelligent DC technology - remote DC powering for the self-powered surround loudspeakers - afforded distinct advantages when applied in

TW-16

March-May 2021

critical-quality scenarios, according to Salkin. "Typically it means that the cable going to the loudspeakers can be thinner," he notes, "as you need not be concerned with running heavy-duty speaker cable. That's the biggest advantage. But it also means we don't have to be concerned with variations in cable distances. In this case we have equipment racks behind the screens, and if we were running cable to passive speaker all the way in the back we would have to account for high-frequency roll off. Also, with self-powered systems the amplifiers are built in and matched to the drivers, and you have true bi-amplified systems, you get better sound quality." Other members of the DGA's supervisory committee were directors Christopher Nolan, Jon Favreau, Betty Thomas and Shawn Levy. Overall guidance of the project was driven by DGA National Executive Director Russ Hollander and two executives from his team, Marcel Giacusa and Tim Webber. In addition to Dolby Vision projection and Atmos sound, the renovation included a new 50-foot projection screen, upgraded Norelco film projectors, and impeccably renewed interior décor.

REBOOTING & GROWING CINEMA EXHIBITION IN THE PANDEMIC ERA

The impact of COVID-19 on cinema exhibition has been drastic in 2020. 2021 looks to be another tough battle for survival of the exhibition sector globally and in India. But there is a silver lining - the cinemas who survive this critical phase will come out stronger and will offer a better viewing experience to the cinema crazy audience in India. Nothing can replace the large screen experience. Cinema exhibition has survived many an onslaught and emerged stronger from every crisis. This too shall pass.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has shattered the global cinema theatrical business which is currently in the doldrums. AMC Entertainment Inc., the biggest cinema operator in the world, said that it may run out of cash by early 2021. Cineworld, the second biggest cinema company in the world, in early October closed all the cinemas in US & UK. Cinemex Holdings USA, operator of Miami-based CMX Cinemas, filed for bankruptcy in April. Cinema chain, Vue International said demand is still

there, but there are no major movies being released for consumers to watch. In India, PVR & INOX, two of the biggest multiplex chains in the country, have their stocks taken

a battering and it is estimated that around 1500 single screens have shut down due to the impact of the pandemic in the last one year.

Drop in the Box Office Revenues The estimated global box office revenues in 2019 was around US$ 42 billion and it saw a

March-May 2021

TW-21

• SPECIAL STORY • phenomenal drop in 2020 due to the pandemic. The pandemic impacted the content pipeline, halting film production and closure of cinemas. The production has restarted in some countries and the industry has adopted remote-work protocols where possible. The biggest shortterm risk seems to be consumers' dwindling confidence in physical venues. Before the impact of COVID-19, the film industry was undergoing a huge transformation and the ongoing disruptions only accelerated the chaotic transformation well underway in movie production, distribution and consumption. To explain it more lucidly, the theatres were already challenged by a shorter theatrical window and the changing consumer preference increasingly towards the SVoD players hastened the demise of the cinema screens across the globe. The well-funded SVoD providers like Netflix, Amazon with significant content budgets completely shifted the power balance in the pandemic era and forced major movies in India to release on their respective platforms. The apparent depletion of choice in theatres, in contrast to the wealth of content put added pressure on admissions to the cinemas. The cinema chains are trying to boost consumer confidence and improving

consumer targeting through deployment of customer data and integrating technology which can deliver the touch points that cinemas have vis-a-vis the customers. The markets could see further consolidation amongst the cinema operators and this consolidation may deliver economies of scale for theatre operators. But the immediate challenge lies with fewer films available for theatrical release and due to this the future of cinema business looks set for a long battle for 2021.

The Influx and Proliferation of OTT When the lockdown was imposed in March 2020 and the theatres were shut down, the streaming services emerged as the alternative distribution channel. This raised

the hackles for the producers and filmmakers whose movies were scheduled to release in theatres. But it brought about an innovation in the industry and left the dynamics hanging between the producers, studios, streaming services and exhibitors and distributors. Universal Pictures was the first to take the plunge and released ‘Trolls World Tour’, a sequel to ‘Trolls’ (2016) on Apple TV & YouTube and not in cinema halls. The movie received the biggest opening for Universal's digital title release and this gave producers the confidence the consumers are hungry for entertainment in their homes. In another major announcement Warner Media announced that its 2021 slate will have a simultaneous release in theatres and on its streaming service-HBO Max.

Estimated Losses for the Indian Film Industry in the Pandemic The theatrical market in India is estimated to have lost 3,000 crore during the six months of the lockdown when the theatres have remained shut since March, The Hindi film industry accounts for around 2,000 crore. Bollywood had revenues of 5000 crore in 2019, while the first three quarters of the 2019 had brought in box office collections of 3,700-3,800 crores. Hits like action thriller ‘War’ ( 292.71 crore) and ‘Housefull 4’

Producers in India understood that putting films on streaming services can no longer be bundled with selling satellite rights, neither do they have to be exclusive to exhibitors. In May 2020, Amazon Prime Video announced the global premiere of director Shoojit Sircar's dramedy ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana. Vijay Subramaniam-director and head, content of Amazon Prime felt that they banked on the platform's ability to provide the producers with the option of releasing their movies in 200 territories in the world. "We were fortunate because of the strategic relationships we have with every film producing community in the industry across the country. Whether it's Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada-given the amount of work we do in each of these communities-it was relatively easier for us to sit down with the producers in each of these industries. We asked them if they would like to consider a worldwide premiere on Prime Video considering since cinemas were not an option. They responded pretty enthusiastically." The announcement attracted criticism from the exhibition industry. PVR Ltd issued a statement saying, "We are disappointed with some of our producers deciding to go straight to the streaming platform/s. We were hoping that the producers would accede to our request to hold back their film's release till cinemas reopen."

Silver Lining as the Crisis Subsides - RRR by SS

become the highest-grossing film of the week across the world with earnings of 155 crore (gross) so far. The success of ‘Master’ is a welcome indicator of the success of the box office barometer and another huge boost came when actor Salman Khan tweeted, "Sorry, it has taken me a long time to revert to all the theatre owners… It's a big decision to make during these times. I understand the financial problems that the theatre owners/exhibitors are going through and I would like to help them by releasing ‘Radhe’ in theatres. The commitment was of Eid and it will be Eid 2021, Inshallah. Enjoy ‘Radhe’ this year in theatres on Eid. God willing." ‘RRR’ by SS Rajamouli has audiences raving about it ever since it was first announced. The film will be releasing in 10 languages, and has recorded incoming offers worth over 348 crores for theatrical rights of only 5 languages, ever since its release date announcement. The excitement has surpassed all levels when the release date for the film was announced. All set to release in October 2021, ‘RRR’ also has received offers amounting to over 348 crores for theatrical rights for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam in totality, with 75 crores in Nizam, 165 crores in Andhra Pradesh, 48 crores in Tamil Nadu, 15 crores in Malayalam and 45 crores in Karnataka amounts to a total of 348 Crores.

The team is also getting huge offers from Bollywood, because the audiences here are also a part of the massive wave of excitement. The ensemble cast starring Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani and Allison Doody and several others in pivotal roles with a celebrated director like SS Rajamouli whose last venture Bahubali - is still the biggest hit Indian film, crossing 1400 crore at the Box Office in India alone. All in all, 60 movies released across India in theatres in February 2021. Over 1000+ movies are confirmed for a theatrical release in 2021 and another 600 movies are yet to confirm their release dates. This leads to the conclusion that nothing can match the 'BIG SCREEN' experience

Co-existence of Both the Mediums is the Future Karan Johar believes that cinema will never die and he feels both OTT and theatres have their own inherent strengths and they will both coexist. Subramaniam of Amazon Prime Video also sees importance of the cinematic experience. "It was never an either-or. Theatres have always existed and always will. The cinematic experiences are necessary. There is a great sense of community and celebration that the cinematic experience allows." While exhibitors are looking forward to a miracle and have audiences packing theatres with a vengeance once the pandemic subsides, the OTT platforms locked in fierce competition to woo the producers and subscribers alike.

Rajamouli Fetches 348 Crores in a Pre-Theatrical Release in a Major Deal ‘Master’ is the first Indian big-budget movie to release in a theatre after the cinema halls were shuttered in March 2020. Marcus Theatres:

The First Sculpted Surround Cinema in Wisconsin The new movie tavern is the very first full theatre complex in the U.S. to exclusively feature Sculpted Surround and Dolby Atmos, the project represents an ideal model for future cinema audio installations. Advanced technology to a whole new isn't it?... Bright Star Systems recently equipped Marcus Theatres' new Movie Tavern location, the first full cinema complex in the U.S. to

feature JBL Sculpted Surround technology, with JBL Professional cinema loudspeakers, JBL Professional DSi 2.0 amplifiers and Crown DCi amplifiers. Movie Tavern by Marcus is a premium theatre concept offering restaurant-style dining and in-seat service for moviegoers. At the new location in the Brookfield Square shopping centre, guests can enjoy dinner and a movie in the premium UltraScreen DLX theatre with Dolby Atmos immersive audio or one of seven additional theatres with 7.1 surround sound. Bright Star Systems equipped the complex with JBL Professional

cinema loudspeakers, DSi 2.0 amplifiers and Crown DCi amplifiers, following the JBL Sculpted Surround specification in the 7.1-equipped theatres. Sculpted Surround relies on precisely-calibrated JBL loudspeakers in a specific configuration to widen the "sweet spot" in the auditorium for balanced sound in every row. "We had been handling most of the work for Marcus on their last four new builds," said Dave Lund, Senior Consultant, Bright Star Systems. "We came in as the integrator, we got the construction drawings, and we handled the projection and sound in the theatre auditorium. We took into consideration how big the screens are, what kind of ceilings they were going to put in, and we handled all of the technical work. We are also the primary service agent for a majority of the Marcus theatres." The JBL Sculpted Surround specification involves specific loudspeaker models in a precise configuration to provide a premium experience for the entire audience.

Behind the screen, JBL C222 and C222HP ScreenArray loudspeakers feature Dual Dissimilar Array technology, each with two horns at different angles and output levels to provide equal volume from the front row to the back. Along the side walls, JBL 9310 cinema surround loudspeakers feature a built-in 15-degree angle toward the screen to minimise the rearward bias common in traditional setups. At the rear of the theatre, two JBL 9350 high-power rear surround loudspeakers provide wide, even coverage, eliminating the volume build-up created by traditional rear surround arrays. Together, this configuration provides balanced, spatially accurate sound for the majority of seats. "I had used the JBL 9310 and 9350 speakers previously in other installations," said Lund. "I particularly like the output characteristics, the light weight and all the things that everybody likes

about those JBL surrounds. The degree of advanced technology, which I try to apply in an engineering-centric way, gave me tools I never had before. The 200 Series is a home run. I was astounded by, given the cost package, just how effective they really were in

providing what I would call truly lifelike cinema sound." To power the 7.1 and Dolby Atmos speaker arrays, Bright star Systems selected JBL DSi 2.0 and Crown DCi amplifiers. Designed specifically for cinema amplification, JBL DSi 2.0 amplifiers are engineered to meet the exact power requirements of JBL cinema speakers and come preloaded with JBL speaker presets. The DSi 2.0 MA4-D model deployed at the Movie Tavern features Dante and AES-67 digital connectivity for a completely networked system. Crown DCi Series amplifiers provide additional amplification, featuring ultra-efficient DriveCore technology. HiQnet Audio Architect software allows Bright Star Systems to remotely monitor the performance of all amplifiers and make adjustments to keep the system working at optimal capacity. The combination of JBL and Crown cinema audio solutions and JBL Sculpted Surround technology comprises a state-of-the-art system that brings next-generation sound to the Movie Tavern experience. As the first full theatre complex in the U.S. to exclusively feature Sculpted Surround and Dolby Atmos, the project represents an ideal model for future cinema audio installations. "This was a great opportunity to really have a showcase for JBL, and part of that showcase is our Sculpted Surround," said Mark Collins, Senior Manager, Global Cinema, HARMAN Professional Solutions. "We really tried to make that an integral part of the project, and it's really come together well. CHRISTIE:

The Facts of Light FACT 05: BRIGHTNESS DEGRADATION As brightness drops off, the colour gamut shifts, requiring correction and recalibration to maintain the DCI-P3 colour. The trade-off to make these colour corrections is a less efficient projector, further driving down brightness and accelerating the issue. The result is a dark, dim and inaccurate visual presentation that is only correctable by changing the expired Xenon bulb or laser module with a new one.

Spectrum Comparison: Xenon Light and Day Light What makes Xenon so well-suited for cinema? The native light spectrum of a Xenon lamp closely replicates the day light spectrum. Because of this, it can accurately reproduce the natural colours audiences are used to seeing for a realistic and true-to-life experience.

Spectral Response Curves This series of graphs shows each illumination platform's efficiency in producing the DCI specified white balance. The easier a projector can achieve DCI white without filtering, the more optically efficient the system is.

Xenon produces a balanced spectrum of color requiring minimal filtering to achieve DCI white.

FACT 06: RGB PURE LASER OUTPERFORMS LASER PHOSPHOR ILLUMINATION Although RGB pure laser and laser phosphor are both classified as laser illuminated projectors, RGB pure laser offers precision that was previously unobtainable. The colour gamut, brightness, contrast and operational life of pure laser have lifted the industry into a new era of visuals and reliability. This is in large part a result of system design.

RGB pure laser features individual red, green and blue laser diodes with specific wavelengths allowing these projectors to be incredibly efficient. A laser phosphor projector only uses blue laser diodes and requires extensive filtering and colour correction to achieve acceptable colour created with a rotating

Colour Gamut Comparison Bright, bold and vibrant colours can bring a movie to life! One of the major benefits of RGB pure laser is its ability to produce a wide colour gamut, replicating Rec. 2020, which exceeds the DCI spec. Take a look at the charts to see how each illumination platform compares when it comes to producing colours.

Size Matters: Comparing RGB Pure Laser Platforms The Christie CP4330-RGB pure laser projector has a similar size and weight compared to Xenon-based cinema projectors. Christie's RGB pure laser cinema projector doesn't use external chillers or racks, making it simple to install into pre-existing spaces, whether it's a booth or boothless.
