Galalite Screens, the leader in cinema screen technologies, has announced a strategic partnership with the Miraj Group, which includes providing 100 screens to Miraj Cinemas in the next 13 months, up to March 2022, for their upcoming projects. Galalite's most sought-after screens are going to be powered with their recently launched Lensray Technology for accomplishing this 100 Screen Project. PVR to Invest 150cr across the Country Next Fiscal Multiplex major PVR plans to invest 150 crore to open up to 40 screens across the country in the next fiscal. The company's target of having 1,000 operational screens has been pushed by a year due to the

outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic to the end of fiscal 2022-23, a top company official has said. "We had to push back our plan by exactly a year because of the pandemic ... By the end of the financial year 2022-23, we should be able to reach 1,000 screens," Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, Joint Managing Director, PVR Ltd told PTI. The company, which added 9 new screens this week in Mysuru and Kanpur, plans to add 30-40 new screens in the next financial year beginning April 1. Bijli said 150 crore would be outlay for the opening of new screens in the next fiscal. Bijli said a strong content pipeline of star-studded Indian and regional films as well as foreign language films along with an aggressive vaccination drive in the country will bring back audiences to the cinema. "We have had a mixed couple of last months. Not very exciting because no big Hindi movie got released. Hindi movies will start releasing from April 2021. We have a strong content pipeline. The year (next fiscal) looks very promising," he added. When asked if the company is also looking for acquisition opportunities for adding screens, Bijli said the company always looks at the options available. "There is no one approach for growth. We keep an eye out for all sorts of opportunities as long as they make sense in terms of numbers, location," he noted. The multiplex industry has been one of the worst impacted segments due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The government allowed cinema halls across the country to operate at full capacity from February 1 last year with adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols. Prior to that, multiplexes and cinema halls were operating at 50 per cent sitting capacity in accordance with the Unlock-5 guidelines issued by the government following the pandemic. Multiplexes and cinema halls were closed for almost seven months and opened in October last year.

PVR had reported a consolidated net loss of 49.10 crore for the third quarter ended December 2020, as it continued to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The company had posted a consolidated net profit of 36.34 crore in the same quarter last fiscal. Revenue from operations during the period under review stood at 45.10 crore, down 95.04 per cent from 915.74 crore in the corresponding quarter a year ago.

PVR Pictures Sees Revenue Returning to Pre-COVID Levels in FY22 Film production and distribution firm PVR Pictures expects its revenue to return to pre-COVID levels in FY22 backed by a strong pipeline of films, scheduled to be released after March, said a top company official. The company has a strong pipeline of star-studded Indian and regional films along with foreign language films and expects the second half of FY 2021-22 to be even better than the pre-COVID. "For the entire financial year 2021-22, we would be back to the pre-COVID level. In the second half of FY 2021-22, we will actually exceed the pre-COVID level ... and we will have situations when big films will start clashing on certain dates and we will do our best to ensure that there is full optimisation", PVR Pictures CEO Kamal Gianchandani told PTI. He further said : The second half of FY 2021-22 would be better than the pre-COVID in terms of release schedule. PVR Pictures had a top line of 150 crore in FY 2019-20, but was impacted in the current fiscal due to pandemic-related disruptions. In FY 2019-20, we were expecting to grow by 33 per cent and cross 200 crore in FY 2020-21, but unfortunately COVID damaged the entire year, he said adding in FY

TM-6

2021-22, we are expecting to go back to the FY 2019-20 level and beyond. According to Kamal Gianchandani, the rhythm in films release schedule is back, which was disrupted as production schedule was affected due to the pandemic. In October, last year when cinema halls and multiplexes opened for public screening after remaining shut for nearly seven months, they were struggling to have new films for their viewers. During the pandemic, several producers had realised their films on popular OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon as cinema halls were closed. According to Gianchandani, both Cinema halls and OTT platforms would coexist. OTT and theatrical can thrive together and feed each other. It is good for customers and the filmmakers, producers and studio, as there are more revenue streams, he said. While sharing the upcoming films, Gianchandani said in the last week of March film as ‘Godzilla and King Kong’ are coming. While films as ‘Radhe’ and ‘Satyameva Jayate’ have been announced specially for Eid and Maidaan in October. Even the regional films as ‘Pushpa’, ‘KGF II’, ‘RRR’ and Rajnikant's next film are coming from July to October, he said adding we are in touch with other producers, who are ready with release. Barring a few states, the cinema halls are operating with full seating capacity. Some of the states such as Maharashtra and Kerala are still continuing 50 per cent restriction. People are already back at cinemas, he added.

PVR Raises 800 cr; Issues Shares Through QIP Multiplex operator PVR Ltd has raised 800 crore by issuing shares to a set of investors through qualified institutional placement (QIP). The QIP witnessed an allotment of over 55.55 lakh equity

shares to eligible qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) at a price of 1,440 a piece. "The fund raise committee of the company... approved the issue and allotment of 55,55,555 equity shares to eligible QIBs at the issue price of 1,440 per equity share, aggregating to approx 800 crore," PVR said in a regulatory filing. PVR said the issue opened on January 27, 2021 and closed on February 1, 2021. Shares of the company were trading 0.29 per cent higher at 1,529.30 a piece on the BSE.

Exhibitors, Producers Welcome 100% Occupancy in Theatres Film exhibitors, producers and cinema hall owners on Sunday hailed the Centre's decision to permit movie theatres across the country to operate at 100 per cent capacity from February 1 last year. The insiders said the move would help the industry recover from the coronavirus pandemic-induced losses. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar released a new set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to help functioning of cinema halls with adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols. Adequate physical distancing, mandatory face masks and sanitisation of auditorium after every screening are among the latest SOPs issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Sunday, after the government

allowed cinema halls to operate at 100 per cent occupancy. Digital booking of tickets and staggered show timings to avoid crowding will be encouraged, the minister said, releasing a set of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Producers Guild of India, headed by producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, took to Twitter and wrote that lifting of the occupancy cap was a necessary step to revive the industry. "We welcome the decision of MIB India to allow 100% capacity in cinemas from February 1 and extend our sincere gratitude to Honourable Prakash Javdekar and everyone involved in facilitating this important step in our industry's recovery," the Guild tweeted. The Multiplex Association of India also took to Twitter and shared that they were grateful to Javadekar for the decision and thanked actor-BJP MP Sunny Deol for his support. "We are deeply grateful to Hon. Minister Prakash Javdekar & MIB India for allowing 100% seating capacity in Cinemas from 1 Feb. We would like to extend our gratitude to Hon. MP Sunny Deol for his leadership and support," the tweet read. According to new guidelines, no film shall be allowed to screen in containment zones and states and union territories may consider "proposing additional measures" as per their assessment. Post lockdown, the Centre had allowed reopening of theatres and multiplexes in several regions, including Delhi, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat on October 15, 2020 with 50 per cent occupancy, functioning with stringent dos and don'ts, keeping in view the new normal. Theatres in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh opened last November, whereas cinema halls in Tamil Nadu and Kerala resumed operation in early January. Gautam Dutta, CEO, PVR Limited, said allowing 100 per cent occupancy in cinema halls would give the multiplex industry a "much needed boost." "This move would give confidence to the producers to release their much awaited films and audiences to

Diwali. The first film to bell the cat would probably be ‘Sooryavanshi’, which the entire industry has been waiting for to bring the audiences back to theatres.

return to the cinemas to watch their choicest movies in the company of their loved ones," Dutta said in a statement. Echoing a similar sentiment, Alok Tandon, Chief Executive Officer - INOX Leisure Ltd, said relaxation of seating norms was a "vital pre-requisite" to help rebuild cinema exhibition in the country. Tandon said the decision would now encourage producers to roll out their release slate of films. "This would ease the apprehensions in the minds of content producers and studios, who may now announce the release dates of their movies. We now look forward to the State Governments to provide us the nod to implement the revised guidelines," Tandon said in a statement. Due to the shutting down of cinema halls for more than six months last year, many big ticket films, including Akshay Kumar's ‘Laxmii’, Vidya Balan-starrer ‘Shakuntala Devi’ and Amitabh Bachchan's ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ -- had a direct-to-digital release. Only a handful of Hindi films have so far opened theatrically, including Manoj Bajpayee-fronted comedy ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’, Kiara Advani-starrer ‘Indoo Ki Jawani’ and ‘Shakeela’ and ‘Madam Chief Minister’, both headlined by Richa Chadha. Tent pole Hindi movies ’Sooryavanshi’, ‘83’ and ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, which were pushed due to the pandemic are still awaiting a release date. With the permission to cinema halls to run on full occupancy, the industry now doesn't have "any excuses" to hold back release, Bihar-based exhibitor Vishek Chauhan said. "Now, the industry needs to plan out a proper release strategy. What we can't afford is to overcrowd, clash our films on holidays - Eid, Independence day,

"Once its release date is announced, within a week 20 films will be announced. This is a great news for exhibitors. Finally Bollywood has no excuses left," Chauhan told PTI. While the debate on the future of cinema halls due to the dependence on OTT platforms has only raged since the pandemic, producer Tanuj Garg is hopeful that the latest decision by the government will usher in an era of coexistence. "Good news. Back to 100% capacity for cinemas soon. Contrary to perception, I don't believe the theatrical medium will ever pass away in #India. Time for OTT and cinemas to co-exist peacefully," Garg, who is backing Taapsee Pannu's ‘Looop Lapeta’, tweeted.

Pre-lockdown, Cinépolis had already opened cinemas in Visakhapatnam, Veraval as well as another in Bangalore, taking the total number of screens opened in 2020 to 39. These openings also enabled Cinépolis to reach the very important milestone of having 100 cinemas in the India market. Devang Sampat, CEO Cinépolis India said, "2020 has been very challenging for the entire movie industry and for the exhibition industry in particular. However, in just the last few weeks of 2020, we have seen two big releases from Hollywood, which have performed well at the Box Office. We believe

As for Cinépolis, we recently opened 3 new multiplexes in Metro locations (Mumbai, DNCR and Chennai), increasing our screen count by 26. These openings go a long way in showing just how much confidence we have in the long-term business prospects of the industry, here in India. And this 2021, we will continue to focus on what we do best, which is film exhibition." Finally, 2020 will long be remembered as a year which challenged the very core of the exhibition business. However, the challenge has been met head-on and with firm resolve. The year 2021 has brought with it, new beginnings and hope in the form of a very promising movie line-up. The entire industry is now in process of moving past all the challenges and we see a bright future, going forward.

From Where It All Began It all started from R. Veeranna's family who owns and runs Victory Cinema and Veeresh Cinemas I and II on Magadi Road, Bangalore. R. Veeranna had been an eminent film exhibitor of Bangalore; awarded with the Presidential Medal for his contribution to the exhibition sector. He died in May, 2017; post which his son K. V. Chandrashekara and grandson L. C. Kushal worked tirelessly to rebuild Victory Cinema for several months. The venue today, aims to combine both worlds the world of luxury that a swanky multiplex would offer, and the world of large screen with impressive sound that a single screen could best offer.

Featuring Best-of-the-Best Victory Cinema features a seating capacity of 505, Dolby Atmos, Harman's JBL speakers, Crown amplifiers, and is currently the only single-screen cinema in Karnataka with the Series 4 4K RGB laser projection from Barco with Harkness Clarus Silver Screen. The cinema also does away with paper movie posters in its main hall in favour of three Samsung professional display televisions that continuously show movie posters in 4K resolution while introducing the audience to other features and specialities of the theatre. Of course, feeding the data onto such TVs has always been a burden. However, Bangalore-based Artificial Intelligence company Intelisa, teamed up with Victory to let theatre staff upload pictures and videos to a cloud, and a proprietary module devised by Intelisa physically connected to the 4K display TVs through the HDMI port which wirelessly connects to the theatre Wi-Fi network and seamlessly downloads, stores and plays the desired content. This already seemed to be a huge hit among the crowds visiting the property.

Miraj Cinemas:

The Bold and Splendid Move! Resuming with aggressive expansion plans amidst unpredictable circumstances, this cinema chain had already made an incredible finish to a '100 screen success'. Only post which the Covid-19 pandemic upended the entire entertainment industry bringing theatrical showcase of films to a screeching halt. The nine-month gag order impacted the entire cinema business end to end, right from shoot to release to exhibition. But that seemed to deter no intentions which this cinema has strongly set for itself… In a bold move, Miraj Cinemas launched three brand new properties in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore, Karnataka's Raichur and Hyderabad's Chandanagar while cinema distribution and theatrical release was only beginning to crawl back in action. The Covid-19 pandemic upended the entire entertainment industry bringing theatrical showcase of films to a screeching halt. It was a nine-month gag order that impacted the entire cinema business end to end, right from shoot to release to exhibition. Many titles resorted to OTT release to cut facing major losses. Miraj Cinemas on the other hand held its ground and made a stellar come back by not only opening three properties but also announcing an active pipeline of launches in the coming months. This move was not just to encourage trade and industry but also motivate a cinema loving

nation to come back to their theatres and take a step towards leading a normal life as one knew prior to that of the pandemic struggle. In 2019 Miraj Cinemas made an incredible finish to 100 screens and announced a dozen more to see completion in 2020 before the Coronavirus hit the globe. Resuming

its plan to put a theatre in every corner of the country, the young theatrical chain opened back its doors for business with the all new launch of a 5 screen, 1257 seater property in Coimbatore, marking the brands entry into Tamil Nadu and achieving a benchmark of 50th property in the chain. Miraj Cinema's foray in Raichur is an interesting one. It's the first property to open up after lockdown and also does give in the first multiplex experience to this fort city. The chain's grand entry into this unchartered territory is marked with

"India's 9000 screens cater to 30% of its population, the spending capacity is therefore not even half explored. Most places are Multiplex starved, hence there is a huge potential for the business to grow. Year on year box office collections of certain films in a territory or a city clearly shows that growth of plexes and box office collections has a directly proportional. Chandrapur and Akola from our stable are classic case studies. This phenomenon also drew our attention to places with perhaps half a million population but not Multiplex catering to them. There were no collections from places like Gurdaspur or Chandrapur till we added a theatre, so using that as a model will be penetrating into the tier II and III markets". Theatrical showcase will continue being cinema's primary destination. Yes, the pandemic did bring about a setback but with the opening of the economy it has shown revival and it will catch on a top gear mode soon. I have to quote Raj Kapoorji here- The show must go on!" - Amit Sharma Managing Director, Miraj Cinemas TM-24

Integrating the operations with automation software solutions gives the cinema operators an edge in planning the shows and the concession inventory ahead of time. They can monitor, manage and order inventory based on the movie, number of shows and even introduce special themed items for a release. Now many software companies have solutions that seamlessly integrate with the ERP software for finance, HR, asset management, and material inventory operations.

IT Infrastructure & Automation The coming together of Cinemas and Information Technology (IT) infrastructure completely transformed the exhibition business by enabling the automation of the operations and centralising controls. It has positively impacted not just cinema chains and multiplex theatres, it has also changed how single-screen cinemas function. In the past decade, IT infrastructure has become the backbone of the

cinema's operations. This transformation started when digital cinema was formalised in the industry, thereby automating the scheduling/playback and extending to ticket sales, concessions & inventory management. The convenience of booking tickets for the desired movie, screen, show, and seats through websites and mobile apps has brought movies to the viewer's fingertips. The convenience of pre-booking concessions and having the food

IT Infrastructure of Central Server Room and Network Operation Centre The central server room is the heart of the theatre operations. The server room should have high security and March-May 2021

• TECHNICAL • safety norms with fire and water inundation protection as it houses the main backend servers and data storage units. The power supply should be uninterrupted with redundancy. The single or multiple broadband connections and V-SAT connectivity should ideally terminate in this room. Content received through broadband, V-SAT and physical drives should be stored in a central storage server in this room. This room can also be extended to serve as a Network Operations Centre (NOC). The entire cinema operations can be monitored and controlled from this NOC, right from ticket and concession sales, internet to content scheduling, pushing the content from a central storage server to the local playback server, and automating the shows in the theatre. This room can extend its support to the national/regional NOCs.

Lighting and AC Automation All the lighting and the airconditioning of the theatre complex can be programmed and synchronised with the show schedule for peak and non-peak functionalities. This can be done not only for the theatres but also for all

the common areas too. This will help save electricity and cut expenditure.

Lobby Display Content Automation The IP enabled LED displays and video walls can also be programmed to turn On/Off according to the timings of the shows. The Ethernet/ IP enabled LED displays/video walls can be networked with the central management system so that the content like trailers and off-screen advertisements for the theatre lobby displays can be scheduled, and customised based on the day, show, and movie. The same technology can be used to manage and update the concession displays as well.

Cinema Content Playback Automation Infrastructure In the past cinema, automation used to be a pure contact closure switching system and could have RS232 serial protocol and TTL control devices. These technologies could not scale up or be remotely operated. The IP (Ethernet) and USB based technology, enabled complete automation, and monitoring/control from a central/remote location that could be within the complex, city, or even in another city. The

advantage of this setup is that the Central Server Room can handle the entire operations with a skeletal staff supporting them at the local NOC. In the case of Screen Mask/Screen Curtain, there are custom solutions to control the masking based on the screen aspect ratio and the content aspect ratio. The automation cue can come from the content playback server or the projector. The cinema playback equipment in the projection room like the projectors, playback server, multichannel audio processor, amplifiers, can all be remotely operated over the network and are completely automatable. The network connectivity also facilitates remote monitoring, diagnosis, alerts, and troubleshooting of the system in case of a fault.

Safety & Security Integrated building security and safety systems to the IT infrastructure will help centralise the effective monitoring of the premises' cameras, and access points, in addition to protecting the property from fire or any natural disasters. The system can be designed to send alerts in case of a security breach or any safety incident so that the Maintenance and Security teams will get an alert within seconds of the problem occurring, whether they are on or off location.

Conclusion The IT integrated theatre operations, be it cinema chains, multiplex, or single screen cinemas have led to increased efficiency and decreased reliance on a large workforce to run the backend theatre operations. It has also resulted in efficient security protocols, better content management, energy usage systems and higher operational transparency. It is highly recommended to have a proper IT infrastructure to run the business efficiently.
