Issue # 91 March-May 2022

Let’s say the cinema exhibition industry has been on the chopping block ever since the pandemic has knocked our doors! For all the time gap from the previous issue we so had, I do feel a greater sense of excitement today to see the industry picking itself back to business. The cinema exhibition industry; a world in itself has fought bigger battles for it was the only industry drastically affected by the lockdowns and mere shutdowns of cinemas globally. From global box office declines, giant cinema house mergers, great movie houses pulling its shutters down forever to the hopeful restrictions for the cinema business on and off, the cinema exhibition world has seen it all. Is it really the OTT Era??? Screens here are getting larger than life!!! On the contrary, the world-renowned – IMAX brings to you the World’s tallest and the World’s Largest IMAX screens respectively! The world’s tallest IMAX screen delivered to Royal Cinemas in Georgia stands at 76 feet and 2 inches tall. The screen will be used in a custom-built 363-seat auditorium with ground-breaking 4k projection system that adds a new optical engine. The other being the largest IMAX screen in the world situated at the Traumpalast Multiplex in Leonberg, Germany. Measuring 21.03 metres high and 38.16 metres wide, the record-breaking screen is said to be wider than the Boeing 737 airliner!! Now that’s a record move! Nevertheless, the restrictions are all let down and we are all set to bring the world back to the big screens again! Speaking off which, we do have films packed and lined up until the year-end and beyond too… Megamovies such as ‘Morbius’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Jurassic World Dominion’, ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF- Chapter 2’ have positively predicted mega openings at the box office. PVR & INOX Announce Merger! Though the patrons could be dumbfounded by surprise, the two Indian mega movie houses are here for the bigger perspective. The combined entity shall be named as PVR INOX Limited with the branding of existing screens to continue as PVR and INOX respectively. New cinemas opened post the merger will be branded as PVR INOX. Having said this, the fraternity did lose too many gems. Robert Downey Sr., Dilip Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Bappi Lahiri, Director K V Anand, Puneeth Rajkumar, Comedian Vivekh , Nedumudi Venu and many other notable faces have left a huge void with umpteen hopes to fill. The absence of these stars is still felt in the film industry and needless to say, their exceptional work will be remembered by generations to come. TheatreWorld is once again the media partner at CinemaCon, Las Vegas, USA to be held from 25-28 April 2022. Also bringing to you is the fifth edition of Big Cine Expo held 16-17 August 2022 at the Chennai Trade Centre, India; poised to be Asia’s biggest tradeshow and convention for the cinema exhibition industry. Get ready to grab your business opportunities as the dates aren’t that far away... See you all soon! #MoviesOnBigScreenAlwaysGiveThebestExperience Raghavendra T Editor-Publisher DISCLAIMER - TheatreWorld Magazine does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for the quality, accuracy, completeness, legality, reliability or usefulness of any information, product or service represented within our magazine or web site. Adam Aron, Chairman and CEO of AMC, commented: "This constitutes our third announcement of a major market acquisition in the last two months, including the second acquisition announcement for a theatre in the Chicago metropolitan area, which remains a strong moviegoing market for AMC. We look forward to bringing the AMC experience to even more guests in and around Chicagoland, at this previously high-traffic, well-known location. We continue to seek out these strategic acquisition opportunities to strengthen our company. Our initial recent results encourage us to keep going, given that our mid-2021 acquisitions of AMC The Grove 14 and AMC Americana at Brand 18, both in the Los Angeles market, continue to rank among the 30 highest-grossing movie theatres in the entire United States since joining up with AMC." Severtson Features Popular Options for Folded Screens at CinemaCon Including Standard, Microperf, & New Digi-Perf Configurations, the Industry-Acclaimed Severtson S Vision 3D GX & Ultra Wide 3D Screens Can Now Be Shipped Folded in Smaller Packaging with No Loss in Structural Integrity or Performance; Int'l Shipping Costs Reduced by Up to 70%. Severtson

Screens (severtsonscreens.com), a global leader in innovative and quality projection screens for the cinema, commercial, pro AV, and home theatre markets, is proud to announce that it will feature its most popular options for its acclaimed folded S Vision 3D GX line of cinema projection screens during CinemaCon 2022, held in Las Vegas, Nev. from April 25-28 at Caesars Palace, booth #2420A. Both microperf and digi-perf provide approximately seven percent open space against the traditional 4.5 percent open space. Severtson's new digi-perf screens, like microperf, are also engineered for the optimum audio and visual experience available in the marketplace today. Digi-perf screens are available with all coatings and gains, are foldable as with all Severtson cinema screens (excluding electric screens), and it reduces more over traditional standard perf screens. According to Severtson, both microperf and digi-perf offer multiple benefits versus standard perforation screens. "Either one is the answer for current ultra-high-performance cinema screens, depending on one's specific needs, and are the perfect solutions for 4k, 8k, 12k and even higher projection resolutions as these technologies become available in the future," he added. "Microperf and now Digi-perf are quickly becoming industry standards as projection resolutions increase and is what has put the 'folded' line over the

top," added Dan Maxwell, Severtson Corp. V.P. & Chief Operating Officer. "These two options are now the screens of choice for high-end, premier theatres and cinema chains. The Severtson microperf and digi-perf viewing surfaces practically eliminate moiré which is often problematic of screens with larger perforation, yet continues to provide a more realistic soundstage allowing speakers to be placed directly behind the screen." Severtson explained that they have been shipping these screens both domestically and internationally to very pleased customers who previously could not afford them because of the enormous international shipping fees. Additionally, now there is a solution for complex installations where a long tube housing the cinema screen is impractical or not feasible to transport through the building. "Our folded screen technology has proven again and again to drastically reduce international shipping costs and makes these screens available to every customer worldwide, especially in these trying times," Severtson continued. "And to top that off, our cinema screen price estimator enables our dealers with even quicker cinema screen price quotes and delivery estimates of both our folded and nonfolded options." The cinema screen price estimator is now live and has been available for Severtson's dealer base via its website as well as a mobile app for Apple iOS and Android Smartphones. The most recent update of the mobile app now features support for Spanish and Portuguese integrators. Once the dealer is registered with an account and granted access at www.severtsonscreens.com/register, the tool provides product and packaging price estimates for Severtson cinema screens as soon as a dealer inputs the necessary required information, such as screen dimensions, coating, material, and desired packaging. The packaging

portion of the price estimate is then calculated based on the selected product's weight and container dimensions, which the tool also provides. For each estimate requested, dealers will receive an automated email and PDF file detailing the screen price and packaging estimate. Prices are only estimates and do not include shipping charges or any other potential international fees. Shipping costs associated with such large packages as these were out-ofreach for so many customers up until recently. Now, Severtson Screens' S Vision 3D GX screens can be folded and packed into a much smaller crate without any loss in structural integrity or performance abilities. "Severtson's new folded screen process not only reduces international shipping fees, the smaller packaging simplifies delivery to theatres and is more convenient for installers as folded screens are much easier to get into buildings and uncreate than standard long-tube roll packaging…especially when a theatre is in a unique structure, such as a highrise or multi-story theatre complex," added Maxwell.

Qube Introduces WireTAP Air to Theatres Via 5G & 4G Networks This new theatre appliance facilitates the fast, electronic delivery of trailers and pre-show content to theatres. Qube Cinema has made a major leap in increasing the footprint of electronic content delivery with the all-new WireTAP Air theatre appliance. This small-form factor device connects theatres to Qube Wire's global cloud delivery platform via 5G or 4G mobile networks and allows for the seamless delivery of trailers and advertising DCPs. Its ease of operation and future proof connectivity options provide an ideal way to connect exhibitors at a significantly lower cost than was previously possible. Qube has deployed the WireTAP Air across the nearly 2,000 locations that make up the Qube advertising network in India. The use of 4G connectivity instead of satellite has given Qube an 85% operating cost reduction while greatly increasing flexibility. Mark Waterston, Senior VP of Qube Wire had this to say about the WireTAP Air's unique features, "I'm excited for more advertising networks and studio marketing groups to experience the benefits of delivering content via Qube Wire. Measuring just 4" x 4" x 16", this hardy small-footprint theatre appliance includes storage of 128 GB (expandable to 2TB), a builtin firewall, and a Gigabit Ethernet port to connect to the theatre network. It connects to Qube Wire with an internal 4G modem (upgradeable to 5G based on regional availability) or a standard broadband connection. "Our experience in the industry helped us identify a very specific need that exhibitors have during the pandemic one that we were keen to address by crafting a cost-effective, future-proofed device that is also incredibly easy to deploy." said Rajesh Ramachandran, CTO of Qube Cinema. The WireTAP Air includes many of the features that current WireTAP equipped theatres enjoy. These include fully automated storage management, intelligent KDM routing and delivery, real-time delivery status monitoring via the Qube Wire portal and fail-safe automatic firmware updates. Content and key management is integrated across most TMS and server combinations. Installation is simple; just plug and play. The original Qube WireTAP is installed at over 700 locations across Brazil, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Canada and the United States. More than 1,500 movies have been delivered using Qube Wire across these regions. Speaking about the rollout of the Qube WireTAP Air in India, Harsh Rohatgi, CEO of Qube Cinema said "Those involved in the business of movie exhibition in the country are on the constant lookout for solutions that enable robust digital delivery at scale. United Cinemas- JBL Deliver Visceral Cinematic Experiences United Cinemas selects JBL Professional cinema loudspeakers and Crown amplifiers to ensure immersive sound quality and balanced coverage. United Cinemas recently upgraded their flagship facility at Warriewood with advanced JBL Professional cinema audio solutions. Located just north of Sydney in Warriewood, United Cinemas is a premier seven-screen multiplex cinema that offers a premium movie-watching experience including leather recliners with built-in wireless phone chargers, as well as world-class food and beverage service. In order to provide an immersive cinematic experience for moviegoers, United Cinemas required state-of-the-art audio systems capable of delivering clear, intelligible sound and balanced coverage in every seat of its main theatre space, the Grand Theatre. To achieve this, the facility acquired a selection of cutting-edge JBL Professional and Crown cinema audio solutions. "We wanted to enhance the listening experience of the 650-plus capacity Grand Cinema theatre," said Roy Mustaca, Chairman, United Cinemas. "We selected JBL and Crown solutions for their simple-yet-effective configuration and routing capabilities. Crown's built-in speaker presets played a significant role in ensuring proper frequency response, crossover points and limiter settings." The Grand Theatre's audio system is designed around JBL cinema loudspeakers. The installation team deployed JBL 5732 three-way speakers behind the screen

for maximum output and minimum distortion in the main left, left-center, center, right-center and right channels. JBL 9310 and 9300 surround speakers, AM5215 front ceiling surround speakers and AM7215 loudspeakers were chosen for the wide left and right surround channels. Additionally, the team installed JBL 4642 A and ASB6125 subwoofers to deliver spine-tingling low frequencies in the stage and surround LFE channels. The entire system is powered and routed by Crown DriveCore Series networked amplifiers to create a truly immersive listening environment for standard 7.1 channel and Dolby Atmos soundtracks. "Our technical team worked closely with HARMAN application engineers to design a custom JBL audio solution that successfully delivers crystal-clear sound quality and balanced coverage," said Sam Mustaca, CEO, United Cinemas. "We are delighted with the remarkable job and would like to extend our gratitude to everyone involved in the project. Continuing our partnership with HARMAN, we plan to convert the Grand Theatre into a live performance venue in the near future, using BSS signal processors." "As a venue that seeks to pioneer novel movie-going experiences, United Cinemas required a reliable, state-ofthe-art cinema audio solution," said G. Amar Subash, VP & GM, HARMAN Professional Solutions, APAC. "We would like to thank United Cinemas for letting us help them provide a premium audio experience to their audience."

Harkness Issues New Simplified Pricing for Cinema Customers Harkness Screens the world's leading screen technology company and thought leaders in presentation quality has launched a new simplified pricing structure for its global cinema customers. "Over the past two years we have seen our raw material prices and packaging costs increase significantly due to the pandemic and global supply chain issues explains Mark Ashcroft, CEO, Harkness Screens Group. "We have supported the cinema industry throughout the pandemic by completely shielding our customers from these pricing pressures however, as we emerge from the pandemic, we do inevitably need to pass on some of these increases to our customers." Harkness' new simplified global pricing structure introduces product family pricing for all screen products whilst standardising the cost of perforation choices. "Our new pricing structure reflects feedback from our customers around the world. At our last major pricing structure review, our product portfolio consisted of just five screen surfaces. Since then, our business has changed dramatically and as the needs of our customers have changed, so has our portfolio. Today we have fifteen surfaces in our portfolio with more new products in our development pipeline for 2022," Ashcroft explains. "With the backdrop of increased raw material costs along with future plans, we felt it was the right time to carry out a review of our pricing structure removing many of the previous pricing complexities (including foreign exchange fluctuations) and perceived product barriers (such as differential pricing based on gain) to provide our customers with a simpler more accessible pricing structure going March-May 2022

forward," he adds. Harkness' new pricing structure will be communicated to customers over the coming days with prices effective immediately. "We remain committed to supporting our customers by providing them with the best value for the world's leading cinema screen technologies. We continue to seek methods for reducing the impact of raw material cost increases and where we are able to identify future cost savings, we aim to pass these on to our customers as quickly as possible. To that end, we have committed to carrying our quarterly reviews of our pricing structure going forward," Ashcroft concludes.

Future of Movies? What after pandemic for movies? Will movies be released in theatres or on OTT?

Parth Parikh Financial Risk Manager FinShiksha

These are some of the commonly asked questions. So here, through this article with data, let's try and find some answers. (The data used in this article is of the USA market - some similarities exist when we compare the Indian market, will see to it) Will box-office revenue increase? No. But not because of covid. The inflation-adjusted box-office revenue has been constant for the last 25 years.

March-May 2022

TW-17

• BUSINESS TREND • And at the same time, the number of theatres in the USA has increased by 50% in the same time frame.

1995 : 27,000+ screens 2020 : 40,000+ screens

The probable reason behind stagnated box-office returns: 1. Increase in screens, so can't increase the ticket prices 2. DVDs and OTTs are available. So, for an average movie, the people may not spend too much At some stage, point 1 will happen in India too. Point 2 is already happening (due to pandemic) So, does this affect movie releases? Yes. Movies by big studios have dropped considerably.

So basically, studios are cautious. It's not that movies are not made, but they are not released via screens now. Of course, many films are now finding OTTs a better platform to release. (And that's happening the world over) In that case, what will happen to smaller studios/distributors? They have to shut shop or sell to a more significant entity. Consolidation will happen. 75% of the market share is with the top 6 distributors. With Netflix and Prime coming in - the smaller distributors will find it extremely difficult to be profitable

Where is this moving then? Safe heaven. Only movies that have a higher probability of success will get a theatrical release. Rest all will on OTTs. Why do I say this? Check the data of what kind of movies are getting produced - Adventure and Action. Likely that Marvel Universe Movies will get a release just for the experience vs, say, any Drama movie. Also, movies with superstars are more likely to get a release than a new entrant actors movie.

See, the movies based on real-life is likely to get lesser traction. Maybe the audience wants to connect with the event better, and hence a lot of series are coming based on that, and those do well. I feel the screens business in the USA, at least, is in real trouble. And I assume similar case will be in the geographies like Japan, UK, Germany (basically developed economies).

Big World Cineplex:

Presenting Cinematic Luxury

It accommodates 10 professional movie houses, including VIP houses and an IMAX house. All movie houses are equipped with a TMS automatic management system and second-generation RealD-3D projection equipment. The IMAX house (Hall 1) installed a state-of-the-art projection system - the Christie 90°4K HFR dual system - in April 2014, the first of its kind in China. All seats in the Cineplex are made of pure wool and were the first seats in a Chinese cinema to use high-end seat material at the time of construction. Christie is pleased to announce that Big World Cineplex has chosen its state-of-the-art RGB laser cinema projection systems for its flagship multiplex located in Wuxi, a prominent historical and cultural city in China's Jiangsu province.

Known as Wuxi Big World Cineplex, the multiscreen cinema is conveniently located in the city's downtown area and is known for its luxuriously furnished auditoriums and plush seats. It is equipped with 10 screens,

out of which nine are powered by Christie's RGB pure laser projection systems including the CP2320-RGB, CP2315-RGB, and the China-specific CP2310-RGB/c that excel in image quality, operational lifetime and overall
