Whatever Floats Your Boat

Creative Director Francis Gigantic

It should be clear, even after a cursory flip-through, that this May issue focuses primarily on boating.

Integrated Media Specialist Teresa Speed

The Space Coast is known world-wide, not so much – despite its name – for silvery objects shooting spaceward, but for regular folks shooting waveward, rain or shine. That surfing defines our beachside culture is all well and good, but it sends an incomplete message to those who regard us beyond our shores: that it’s the water, and all the myriad ways we enjoy it, that defines us. Sure, surf all you want. You can even SUP, if that’s you bag. Any way we connect with the ocean is worthy of notice – and fishing, boating, swimming, or skating concrete waves, even – define us as much as the sport and lifestyle we’re known for.

In fact, all of these waterbound interests are inextricable. It’s rare that you’ll find – more so than in California or even Hawaii – surfers who own boats, whether to fish or just to connect with their families. One of May’s interviews happens to be with Willie Wehrman, General Manager of MarineMax in Cocoa, who says there’s an “H2O gene” in all Floridians that’s just waiting to be cracked open. “Water and boating is in my DNA...” “We’re all boaters with such passion for the water that we can’t help but share it. “We’re all united by water.” Keep on boating… – The Editor

More Floridian Than You A Florida teen is recovering in the hospital after he was bitten by a venomous snake. Last month, 18-year-old Austin Hatfield was bitten on his lip by a water moccasin, popularly

have to undergo multiple antivenom treatments. “I was very worried,” Gina Bailey, the mother of Hatfield’s girlfriend, told the station. “I know that these snakes are very, very poisonous.” On a Facebook page listed for Hatfield, multiple photos show the teen handling snakes, including one showing a snake bite.

referred to as a cottonmouth snake, in a Wimauma home. His friend, Jason Belcher, told Fox 13 that Hatfield had captured the snake two days prior. The teen took the animal out from a pillowcase and was playing with it when it struck him. “He ripped it off his face, threw it on the ground and he started swelling up immediately,” Belcher told the station. “It was pretty frightening. We’ve done a lot of stuff together. This is the one thing that scared me the most.” Though initially listed in critical condition, Hatfield is now in good condition. He will

A British man vacationing in Orlando got a chance to tour the local jail after he allegedly urinated in the ice machine at his hotel. A n d r e w Wood, 41, was arrested early Tuesday morning after a security officer at the Hard Rock Hotel reported a very intoxicated man in the lobby. The security guard told police he had seen Wood peeing into the machine, but said the suspect refused several times to identify himself or the room, ClickOrlando.com reports. The guard gave Wood the option of staying in his room for the night, the suspect refused,

which is when the police were called. Responding officers said Wood smelled of alcohol and kept making random outbursts, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Extreme Tree Hugging A man in Melbourne, allegedly high on a synthetic drug, is accused of attacking a police officer and repeatedly declaring himself to be God, after having sex with a tree. Kenneth Crowder, 41, was arrested Friday after witnesses reported a naked man running through their neighborhood, and performing a sexual act on a tree, ClickOrlando.com reports. An officer found Crowder, but he was wearing blue jeans and a T-shirt, according to officials. The responding officer said Crowder walked towards him in an aggressive manner and identified himself as God, according to CBS Mancave. The officer responded to the perceived threat by using a Taser on Crowder twice. In both cases, the suspect continued to fight while pulling the probes out of his body, according to the website.

Lifeguards Should you try the Food SNAP Challenge? by Nataleigh Palmer

The Food SNAP Challenge was created to spotlight the difficulties of making ends meet on the daily allotment of Food Stamps. According to The Kaiser Foundation, the average Food Stamp benefit for a Floridian is $138.39, an average of $34.59 a week or $4.94 a day. (as of November 7, 2014) Walking in someone’s shoes, no matter how briefly, can be enlightening. You can empathize with hurdles that many people face but also gain new insights on your spending habits. If only to calculate the true cost of what you eat everyday. Budgeting is like a muscle. Sagittarius According to several studies, the aging process consists of several phases: denial, acceptance, frustration, annoyance, enraged refusal, pumping your boobs full of silicone, and then a brief spell of contentment followed by a prolonged period of tearful regret. Cosmos Flowers

An Out-Of-This World Beauty By Nataleigh Palmer

There’s always a good reason to buy flowers. Mother’s Day is another excuse to add some beauty to your yard. These three saltand drought-tolerant (Mother) Earth-friendly plants can add a little low maintenance sparkle to your yard.

Dune (or Beach) Sunflower (Helianthus Debilis) A Florida native and member of the Aster Family, and is a hardy ground cover that blooms year round. It looks great around mailboxes or easements. They love full sun and can grow between 5 and 8 feet in diameter from cuttings or seed. These plants are

natural pollinator attractors that beguile butterflies and bees to your yard and neighboring plants. Most pest aren’t interested in the sunflowers, but they can be overwatered (the leaves will turn yellow) and don’t like or need fertilizer.

Gaillardia, Blanket Flower, Firewheel (Gaillardia Pulchella)

Grows to a height of 1-2’ and about 4-5” apart in mounds. It likes full sun, sandy soil, and can live happily in pots or along boarders in flower beds. Flowers can get too tall and flop over. Deadhead periodically and cut back or support with stakes. Susceptible to aphids during heavy rains and too many gray days. Try to prevent aphids with Neem oil during gray days. Aphids are attracted to yellow, so you can use yellow sticky cards traps to draw them away from plants.

Railroad vine, AKA Beach Morning Glory (Ipomoea Des Caprae) This one has pretty, coneshaped pink and purple flowers. It loves full sun and sandy soil and is drought tolerant once established. It’s about 6” tall but can get 30-100’ long. It will need to be tamed and trimmed from time to time. You can take the trimmings, soak them in water, and try to root them. Make sure the vase you soak them in gets some sun – but not full sun. Roughly 50% will root if you get lucky, but don’t let them dry out. Replant and spread more flowers in your yard.

Recipe ofthe Month

Currying Favor By Samantha Deebel

I don’t really remember John and Doris Barrett, but I have an old photo of them holding me at my Christening in Bangkok, Thailand. My mama found their personal recipe for Vindaloo curry while she was moving and gave them to me. My parents used to dine with them quite often and this is a great recipe I’m so proud to share with all of you. Remember that meat can be substituted with tofu and veggies or any of the vegan and vegetarian meat options available these days. The recipe is exactly how they wrote them. Enjoy! And thanks to my lovely godparents !

Vindaloo 1 lb. meat of your choice (optional), cut into pieces 1/2 cup vinegar 2 medium onions, diced 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 1” piece of ginger 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder 1 tbsp. cumin powder

4 cloves 1 cinnamon stick 4 cardamom seeds Salt to taste Heat about two tablespoons of oil. Add ground spices and fry for a few minutes. If using meat, fry until brown. Add vinegar and cook on low heat till done. If necessary, add a little warm water.

Mexico’s Grill Though Cinco de Mayo will have come and gone by the time many of you read this, it’s important to remember there’s always a good reason for tucking into authentic Mexican food. And just like on the streets of Mexico, the sights, sounds, and great smell of grilling meat can be found beachside at Mexico’s Grill, located in the North Publix Plaza across from Pier. Partners Carlos Garcia and Pedro Campos both hail from Mexico – Carlos is from Zacatecus and Pedro is from Jalisco, where their families have been in the restaurant business for generations, so they know authentic regional food from the inside out. Though their beach location has only been operating for about 8 months, Carlos and Pedro have overseen Cocoa’s La Placita for 13 years and have spent 7 years operating their popular taco truck and Mexican Grocer in Melbourne on Aurora Road. Their combined experience makes Mexico’s Grill not only uncommonly good, but also lends each recipe an authentic taste of home – and family. “Everything is homemade, with real Mexican

made red and green sauces which stem from recipes that have been in his and Pedro’s families for many years. “The verda (green) is my grandmother’s recipe and starts with fresh green tomatoes and jalapenos. The red is very popular in Mexico and is made,

like we make it, with special dried chiles.” Their salsa is also a source of pride, says Carlos. “It’s prepared by grilling tomatoes and jalapenos before combining it with other ingredients, just like at home when I was young.”

Many of their special spices are sent in from Mexico, and they’re also known for their refreshing fruit waters – a combination of water, fruit, and spices. A customer favorite are their horchatas, creamy rice drinks with flecked with cinnamon. “Perfect for a hot day,” says Carlos. But one of the biggest draws at Mexico’s Grill are their tacos, made simply like the street tacos you’ll find everywhere throughout Mexico.

From Mexican and Caribbean-inspired dishes to steak and fresh lobster, the variety displayed on the Coconut’s menu guarantees that everybody in your group will find something delicious to eat. That is in part thanks to Chef Taylor Stevenson, who was kind enough to provide our May recipe for you to try at home. Chef Taylor has a long past of working in restaurants, and got his start in New York and Boston before moving beachside about ten years ago. He worked at P.F. Chang’s, Applebee’s and Cracker Barrel all before making nice with his neighbor, who just so happened to be the GM at Coconuts. Taylor joined the crew at Coconuts, and since then has enjoyed the family-like environment where everyone is happy to work hard to get the job done. This month’s recipe is Rasta Pasta, a Caribbean-Italian fusion dish full of delicious seafood and fresh vegetables. Using the Jamaican flag as an inspiration, this colorful entree is a perfect meal for entertaining.

Rasta Pasta 8oz Tri-Colored Bowtie Pasta 2oz Diced Tomatoes 2oz Yellow Squash 20z Julienned Red Onions 1oz Chopped Green Onion 4oz Alfredo Sauce Pinch of Jerk Seasoning 8 White Shrimp 6 Scallops

Prepare the Bowtie Pasta semi al dente because you will continue cooking it for a short period when you toss the dish. Prepare your diced tomatoes, yellow squash, julienned red onions and chopped green onions. Season scallops with a pinch of jerk seasoning and add to a hot pan with oil (vegetable oil, not olive oil because it will burn off too quickly) and cook approximately 2.5 minutes per side or 4-5 minutes total. Sear the shrimp seasoned with a pinch of jerk seasoning in a hot pan with oil at the same time as you sauté together the yellow squash and red onion until al dente. Shrimp cooks quickly at 1.5 minutes per side or 2-3 minutes total. Ad 4oz of Alfredo sauce and half of your diced tomatoes to the vegetable pan and heat to a low boil. Toss in the pasta and place and place in a bowl. Top with your cooked shrimp and scallops, and garnish with the rest of the diced tomatoes and the chopped green onions evenly across the dish.

MarineMax If boating is your passion, then Marine Max’s motto – “United by Water” – will resonate with you fathoms deep. The roots of MarineMax date back over 40 years, but the story started when CEO Bill McGill moved his family to Florida to turn his lifelong passion into what would become the world’s largest boat retailer. It was also the start of thousands of family memories all centered on the water. Years later, McGill, along with a group of America’s leading boat retailers, decided the boating industry was in need of change. By uniting companies, they found they could maximize the efficiency of operations while sharing the best practices on everything from insurance to mobile boat-servicing, all while allowing associates to focus on what’s important: getting customers out on the water. After its founding in 1998, they quickly acquired 23 additional recreational boat dealers, two boat brokerage operations, and two full-service yacht repair operations, and all cooperating

dealers now operate under the MarineMax name. “We aren’t defined by fiberglass and steel,” Cocoa General Manager Willie Wehrman told us, looking, as always, at the

bigger picture. “Boating opens doors that connect us with family, friends, and places. We explore the unknown, which sometimes is a place, but more frequently, and importantly, a state of mind that’s unlocked only by water. You never quite know what it will be. But it’s something you didn’t have before. Something you’ll never forget, and it will change your life.”

“A parent gets to know their child better, and they grow a little closer each time they’re out together,” he continues. “A couple meets a new set of friends who teach them a completely different side of life. They are United by Water.” But Wehrman is quick to point out that MarineMax is much more than a dealer. “Yes, we sell boats, but we’re also a resource. Our customers get access to a wealth of experience that can match them with the perfect boat from

our unparalleled diversity of brands and models. We provide world-class service, financing and insurance, educational programs, access to Getaways! trips, and other boaters. In addition to new and used boat sales and service by factory-certified technicians, we offer marine engines and related equipment as well as boating parts and accessories.” Continues on Page 34

JJ Turk & Travis Lofland Local Super Boat Team No Vacancy

This May 15-17, when you hear the thunderous roar of the high-powered super boats skipping across the waves of Cocoa Beach, enhance your excitement with some deeper understanding of the people at the wheel and throttle – people like JJ Turk and Travis Lofland, whose “No Vacancy” offshore team represents the beachside during one of the world’s premier super boat events – the 6th Annual Thunder on Cocoa Beach Super Boat Grand Prix. We sat down with JJ and throttle man Travis, two fearless men, to find out what makes them tick – and what keeps their heads cool during heated, heart-stopping moments out on the ocean.

JJ, tell us about your own history and local connections – and the seeds of your respective careers. How did you get into racing? JJ Turk: I was born and raised in Ocean Beach, San Diego. I grew up surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, riding dirt bikes, ATVs, dune buggies, and my favorite hobby – racing RC cars. From a early age my family really embraced the SoCal lifestyle. I

got into a bad car accident when I was in high school that wasn’t my fault. The money I received from the settlement helped me start my first surf shop in OB called Above All Surf, Skate, & Snow. I eventually sold that shop to the owner of SRH clothing and took a trip to Cocoa Beach to visit my mom and dad. They had been out here trying to get their hotel, La Quinta, up and running. As soon as I landed here I’ve been in love with this little beach town and have lived here for 18 years now. My father was me and my friends’ hero, so when I got a chance to work with him in Florida I didn’t hesitate. The La Quinta Inn of Cocoa Beach is the home of the original seven astronauts, and I just find that awesome. I didn’t grow up here, so to me the Space Program was always bigger-thanlife. I consider myself as a custodian for this property, with its rich

history and my father’s hard work. I met my wife, Keriann, here on Spring Break way back in ‘98. We have two wonderful children – Cameron, 8, and Kylee, 6 – and have been married for 10 years. My father passed away in 2010, and me and my family have been

running the hotel ever since. I have had a lot of help with this hotel and couldn’t have done it with out my great staff and the relationships we’ve formed over the years.

college in Austin, TX, after getting out of the Army and realizing working until 4 a.m. five nights a week wasn’t conducive to getting my education. Having grown up in The Pacific Northwest, my best friend in high school came from a fishing family, and I was well aware of the potential for making some quick, hard-earned cash. So north to Alaska I went for a “semester off.” I’ve been fishing ever since, salmon in ‘98 and in January ‘99 my crabbing career started. I’ve sailed from LA to Russia and harvested squid, salmon, multiple species of crab, halibut, and black cod. In ‘02, I started working for Keith Colburn on the FV Wizard and in Season Three, it became a featured vessel on Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” … the rest is history!

Travis Lofland: My career on the water began the summer of ‘98. I was bartending my way through

I’ve also been on the Time Bandit and am currently the Cornelia Marie. In the summer of ‘06

Backgrounds by Casey DeCotis

I was invited to Sarasota as a special guest for a charity fishing tournament called “The Friendlies Catch” on 4th of July weekend during the Superboat Grand Prix. It was the moment I climbed in the SuperCat JD Byrider with Mark Kowalski (currently STIHL Throttleman) and hit a 140 mph that I knew I was hooked. I’ve been involved ever since. Scotty B, from Miss Geico, made the call and got me my start after hounding him for four years – a call I’m forever grateful for. I throttled the Time Bandit SVL with Bob Mazikowski for a couple of years and have driven for Peter Meyers in the Instigator in Cocoa Beach and select other races the last two years. I was coming in to town to visit my friend and lobster diving buddy, Sean Slater, and he pointed me to La Quinta and the Turk family. And, once again, the rest is history. Thanks, Sean! JJ: My first experience came about in 2012 when my wife called me and said there is a really cool gofast boat in front of the hotel and that I should come see it. While I was admiring the boat, the owner

– Brian Williamson– came up to me and we started talking. He was here for the boat races and needed some support. I instantly gave him and his race crew free rooms for the event – with two exceptions: they had to put on a sticker for our hotel in memory of my dad, “Big John Turk,” and carry his ashes with them during the race. After the race, I got a call from Brian asking me if I would like to race with him in the 32nd Annual Key West World Championship. Of course I said “Yes,” and we ended up getting 2nd Place. We’ve been friends ever since.

What about your involvement with Thunder on Cocoa Beach? How did you first become a part of the event? JJ: After Key West World, I’ve been hooked. When the Super Boat International race comes to town, I really try my best to take care of the

racers who are here putting on the show. The La Quinta Inn of Cocoa Beach sponsors a few offshore race teams, including our own “No Vacancy” offshore racing team. We throw a special racer party on Saturday night so the racers can relax and catch up with each other. I’ve always been a big supporter of Kerry Bartlett and staff for their efforts building the race up to what it is now.

You’ve surely had some close calls in your career. Tell us about one of your craziest experiences out on the water. JJ: My craziest race experience was in 2013 in Cocoa Beach. The start got crowded, and my friends from the Tilted Kilt Race team got cut off by another boat (won’t mention names) and ended up catching the

back side of a wave a quickly spinning out and threw water and metal all over the race course. I grabbed the wheel and yanked it left and went through a 100’ wall of water blinded and ended up in 2nd Place. We were on the outside leg where the big holes hide and we launched off a wave and landed so hard my knee popped out of its socket and I started to slip into the bottom of the boat. My then-throttle man kept hammering down – he didn’t even now I couldn’t see and was in trouble. I eventually got back in the seat and we were in hot pursuit of the 1st Place boat, which went wide at turn two by the Pier and we snuck into 1st for a bit then got passed down the beach again. When the 1st Place boat radioed in were that we were out I was like, “Yes! We got this!” Then our outdrive blew out and we were done.

What’s one of the big misconceptions about the races you’d like to dispel for the fans? JJ: A big misconception I see from fans is that these racers are unaproachable, or think they’re better. Most of the racers I meet are really good people. Our “No Vacancy” offshore race team is all about the kids, family, and our friends. We hope to meet all of you race fans this year in Cocoa Beach!

JJ and Travis will be present at the Kick-Off Party at Juice ‘N’ Java Thursday night and the Minutemen Block Party party Friday night in front of the Tiny Turtle, as well as at all stops throughout the race. They’ll also be in the pits all day Saturday. Travis will be present at the Cape Canaveral Beach Wave on Tuesday and Friday before the event. Both will also be available for a meet-and-greet at Mainely Lobster all day Wednesday and Pineapple Point on Thursday morning, and Juice N’ Java in the evening. Stop by and give them some local luck!

“His nickname was Mondo,” Jim says. “Al Hewgley -- who plays lap steel and harmonica and sings with us -- had a sheet of paper with all these band names he made up. Mondo and Tikis just jumped off the page.” How the trio first formed is another story. “Al and I were called to play at a jam with local legend Dave Fowler. We were the only ones who showed up,” Jim explains. “We played and had a ‘Aha!’ moment. Thanks has to go to Ryan, at Paddy Cassidy’s, for suggesting Johnny Woodward on drums when Al and I auditioned in our old duo format.” All three members have extensive musical backgrounds, with both Jim and Johnny having performed with Joshua Dean’s popular Seed band. While Al and Johnny are both Cocoa Beach High alumni, Jim, who was brought up in Chicago and moved here

“Shine on You Crazy Diamond” is one of the more challenging tunes the band have been known to play, but the three keep things impressively tight. “After doing this for many years with Al and the last one with Johnny, the music breathes more these days,” Jim says. “I can go out on a limb and know Al and Johnny are gonna keep the branch from breaking. It might sway and stretch, but that’s where the fun is.”.

µ

That word offers some insight into the name of this Cocoa Beach-based band, but cofounder, keyboardist and vocalist Jim Pacelt says it stems from an old friend who passed away.

Album Reviews by M.A. Rivera

The Who

The Who by Numbers Polydor; 1975

This sleeper hit, which followed on the heels of the epic and grandiose “Quadraphenia,” found the Who doing the unexpected: recording ten songs seemingly unconnected, introspective, and relatively uncluttered by mountains of horns or synthesizers. In short, they went back to being a rock band, and they declare this with the decidedly contrarian opening track, “Slip Kid,” in 6/8 time, with one of Keith Moon’s most restrained performances ever recorded. With militant posturing, “Slip Kid” declares fidelity to freedom at any cost: “There’s no easy way to be free.” “However Much I Booze” is a personal, confessional piece sung by Pete Townshend which could be a folk number flogged and throttled by this restless rock band. “Squeeze Box,” the most readily identifiable track, is a bright spot of pop where the band lets loose like it’s ‘68. On “They Are All in Love” Daltrey sings: “Hey goodbye all you punks, stay young and stay high/Hand me my chequebook and I’ll crawl off to die,” with the bitterness that success may not be exactly what one had hoped for has crept into the band’s collective psyche. John Entwistle’s one tune, “Success Stories,” belies much the same sentiment. This may be a deep-cuts collection for fans, but who hasn’t shrugged their shoulders at some point uncertain of what they should do next? We get to hear a powerful band in transition,

24

thebeachsideresident.com

M AY 2015

contemplating their next move, with one half-step forward and two steps back.

Piqued Jacks

Climb like Ivy Does

Independent Release; 2015 It’s hard not to like Piqued Jacks, and their songs are aggressive without being overbearing. Melodic and memorable, this could well be the band which breaks out of the minor leagues this year and puts its own stamp on FM radio. Opening with the bubbling, “Reign of Clouds” there’s the right balance of muscle and mind to make this interesting. Think of ‘70s-era space rock (thankfully) reeled into a manageable five-minute time frame that puts the focus on songwriting rather than indulgent musical meanderings, all of which help bring this sound up to speed for the 21st century. “Gift Handed Down For Generations” builds from a small, almost insignificant phrase and forms a head of steam, sending it barreling forward. The song has powerful vocals and harmonies, making it hard to ignore; take “Beehive, for instance, which is tense and purposefully restrained. This Italian band recently transplanted to Austin, Texas, and they’re writing highly listenable, imaginative, and well-crafted songs on the pop side of prog rock. With twists, turns and hooks galore, Piqued Jacks should pique and hold your interest.

Exodus

Blood In, Blood Out Nuclear Blast; 2014

Exodus is one of those groups who never truly got their due or were fully appreciated. For a lot of people, Exodus were an interesting footnote to Kirk Hammet’s band before joining the one he’s now better known for. But Exodus have fared well through the years and have arrived at this moment with a new release (their 10th) that is alarming for just how consistently good it is. It’s also unrelentingly brutal. “Body Harvest” is one of the standout numbers, with some fun tempo shifts in it to keep the songwriting interesting. “Collateral Damage,” “BTK,” and “My Last Nerve” are slower, more down-tempo songs (relatively speaking) and are pillars on this disc. There’s some great use of tension and space on “My Last Nerve” and the guitar on “Honor Killings” seems to obliquely reference Middle Eastern music throughout, giving some unexpected depth to the song. “Wrapped in the Arms of Rage” is a song made for neck braces that opens with a double-quick riff before finding its groove. “Food for the Worms” closes out the album and pummels away at the speakers mercilessly. Exodus is in fine form here from start to finish, and part of the current resurgence in better quality, more interesting heavy metal after what feels like a endless drought of repetitive and redundant noise. The entire band shines brightly and repeated plays prove there’s not a flat spot to be found.

Get Out of Town

St. Petersburg A Cultural Interlude

by Vern Hobbs | www.flying-fish-creative.com

“Oh, yeah… that guy!” I exclaimed, recognizing the surreal painting,” The Persistence of Memory,” arguably the best known work of Spanish painter Salvador Dali. The reproduced image was splashed on a poster, advertising the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg’s Central Arts District.

It was not the allure of famous works of art that had drawn me to St. Petersburg – I had come for the annual sailboat show. Nevertheless, as my astute, well-traveled, and refined companion pointed out, a little culture never hurt anyone – let’s go! The city’s Central Arts District, twice named a Number One Arts Destination by American Style Magazine, extends along Central Avenue, between 4th and 16th Streets, in the heart of old downtown St. Pete. Within easy walking distance from the famous municipal pier, the city marina, and

the legendary Vinoy Hotel, the Central Arts District is home to three world-class museums, four performing arts theaters, and dozens of galleries representing well known, as well as up-and-coming artists. The Dali Museum, overlooking Tampa Bay and located appropriately enough at No. 1,

evolving into cubism, and finally into the surrealism for which he is best remembered. As if the extensive collection weren’t enough of an attraction, the building housing the Dali Museum is a recognized work of art in its own right. Designed by architect Yann Weymouth, to

Dali Boulevard, houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Salvador Dali. Declared the highest rated museum in the American South by Michelin Guide, the Dali collection includes 94 original oils, over 100 watercolors, and some 1,300 sketches created by the flamboyant Spanish surrealist. Disappointingly, “The Persistence of Memory” was not on display, but the vast collection that was taught me that Salvador Dali was much more than just the “mad painter” I might have otherwise imagined. Showcased here is a rare talent that began to develop before the age of 10, first capturing the painter’s world in detailed realistic style, then

compliment Dali’s use of spirals and angles, the structure has been described as a combination of the rational and the fantastic. The nearby Morean Arts Center, at 719 Central Ave., is not only a fine arts museum, but a celebrated gallery and interactive educational center as well. Perhaps best known for its fabled Chihuly Collection, the Morean Center offers an ever changing spectacle of art in its every form – painting, sculpture, blown glass, everything! Classes and workshops are presented throughout

the year, along with a full bill of traveling exhibitions and events. Stop by www.moreanartscenter.org before you hit the road. The works of world renowned masters including Cezanne, Monet, and Gauguin, as well as American favorites such as Georgia O’Keefe and Thomas Moran, are part of the permanent collection at the Saint Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Drive, Northeast. Popular features of this museum also include the sculpture garden, the Steuben glass gallery, and one of Florida’s most extensive p hoto g rap hy collections. Traveling exhibitions featuring both established and emerging artists keep things fresh at the museum. On top of these worldclass museums, St. Petersburg’s Central Arts District is chock full of artistic venues literally too numerous to name. The Florida Craftsman Gallery is one example – a 2,000-stall retail gallery featuring folk art from across the state. Another is the St. Petersburg Clay Company, located in the old Seaboard Railway freight depot, and hosting more than 60 sculptors and potters working in the medium. My faithful sidekick was right, as she always is. A little culture didn’t hurt me at all.

The Art Side

Casey DeCotis If the name Casey DeCotis rings more than a few bells, it’s because he’s been a ubiquitous creative force on the Space Coast for close to two decades. The multi-talented artist and DJ has left his mark on a number of local projects, art shows, publications, and events, but it’s his stellar photography that he’s most well known for. “I have always been interested in drawing and painting,” DeCotis says. “As a child, my grandmother, Carmella, was a artist in Utica, NY, where I was born. But the power of photography was not lost on me. As a kid I didn’t understand it as art in typical terms. Once I

the

did, nothing else captured and affected my emotions as much as photography.” DeCotis has spent most of his life in Melbourne and took that early exposure to painting, music and photography here with him. “My father was a journalist, and I saw myself as a photojournalist,” he says. “As time went by, I gravitated more toward the esoteric form of the art. All photography is a form of photojournalism. Every picture

tells a story, some universal, some personal…” “I starting learning and seeking out more art-based material once I got into college and started taking formal art and photo classes. This is where I learned about photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and Aaron Siskind. My History of Photography class was very eye-opening and influential to me. It introduced me to the possibility and acceptance of all art forms.” DeCotis went on to work with Florida Today for 14 years, DJ’d at The Foo Bar in Downtown Melbourne for 7 years, and has been and artist/photographer all along, drawing inspiration from “circumstance, the world around me, mood, emotion, past experience, and making something that will bring out all these things in others.” He reveals that he leans toward “found photography” and has avoided manufactured or staged photography. “But as I progress in my career with a camera,” he continues, “these things are becoming more necessary. But I will always prefer to capture an natural occurring moment above a ‘look at the camera and smile’ with perfect lighting. It’s all about design, style, sensitivity, and a respect and understanding of what is possible.” I asked DeCotis how he got involved in DJing and how that part of his creative world meshed with his other interests.

“I got into DJ music and culture when I was about 14 to 15 years old. I used to listen to and tape the ‘Scrambled Egg

show,’ hosted by Edge Howk on WFIT. Bands such as The Cure, Front 242, Depeche Mode, and Joy Division were my entry

point to house music. For me this music and my art go handin-hand. I’ve done many art shows and DJ’d at them, and

vice versa, taking photos at DJ events and/or combining the two however and when ever I can.”

DeCotis is in demand for commissioned pieces – everything from an image of a personal object to environmental portraits and art pieces. He’s also done extensive work for live art and music shows, band portraits, album covers, magazine covers, book covers, and everything else that requires a fresh, unique look. “Through my eyes, all my pieces are the same. That is, they all come from the same place in my personality. I have a respect and compassion for all things and through my lens everything receives the same approach. This can be an ever-changing feeling, such as ‘What’s your favorite movie?’” he laughs. “All depends on the circumstance and who I’m talking to. I do, however, have one of my very first photos tattooed on my ribs. It’s of a drippy water faucet on the side of my parents’ house. I will always cherish it because it helped me define my style and what I find attractive in an image.” “I like to create the extraordinary out of the seemingly mundane – appreciate what can be special in all things. This extends to how I approach my life and relationships with people.” See more of Casey DeCotis’s work at The Standard Collective, The Derek Gores Gallery, and Foo Bar. He’s involved in many art and music shows throughout the year and prints are available online at: www. mrdecotis.com. Look for him as well on Facebook, SoundCloud, and Instagram – “Casey DeCotis”

Jedi Grind Tricks

Optimism Wins the Day By Scooter Newell • sk8scooter@gmail.com www.cocoabeachskatepark.com

Some of the locals were on on a traveling competition rampage in April; we had representation at skateboard contests in Tampa, Jacksonville, Jupiter, and Dallas, Texas, and there was even a small fishing contest at Port Canaveral called The Great Optimist Fishout. On April 22, Earth Day, we try to do our part at the Skate Park by raising awareness about energy conservation, recycling, and of course, snack on some healthy foods from Sunseed. We also did some gardening and held a small skate jam/contest just for fun. We started out with the 9-and-Under crew and some timed runs through the street course. Silas Backus came out on top with a pretty heavy bag of tricks. And Max Potter skated away with top honors for the older kids with an arsenal of tricks during the “Best Trick” contest. Aggie Leonard spearheaded the gardening table with Killian Cash and Lucas. The kids planted watermelon, peppers, cilantro, tomatoes,

and cucumbers and they are already starting to sprout! Our Skate Park Garden is almost 3 years-old. As you walk around the Skate Park you will notice

lots of different types of fruit growing: pineapple, tons of tomatoes, passion fruit, banana, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, sugar apples, avocados, spinach, peppers, and more. Big thanks to Sunseed Co-Op for sponsoring our Earth Day Event.

Contest News Grace Marhoefer entered her first Bowlrider’s Cup Contest in Jacksonville last month. The contest was held in the famous Kona Pool, and Grace did awesome. She had the smoothest 50-50 grinds and the best handplants in the Women’s Division earning her 2nd Place overall. Great work, Grace! Other Locals like Steve Workman and Mike Rogers were holding it down for the Masters Division. Thanks a lot to the people of Kona for the hospitality. E l i j a h Allred and Max Potter went to the Skate Park of Tampa recently and held it down for CB. Elijah got 2nd Place in the 10-12 age group and Max skated in the Sponsored Division, getting 38th out of over 50 skaters. Great work on the road, dudes! Grace Marhoefer and River Potter went to Abacoa Skate

Park in Jupiter at the end of April and brought back some trophies to CB. Grace took 1st Place in Girls and River earned 2nd Place in the Men’s 17 & Up division. Great work to you both and thanks to Tina Mila for doing most of the contest driving! Two-time Olympic Sled Hockey Gold Medal Winner, Greg Shaw, is back on the Adaptive Action Sports contest tour. He just flew to Dallas and competed for the first time in years on his skateboard. Greg took top honors and has been buzzing around Instagram, Facebook and Twitter from his peers and friends posting his accomplishment. Greg even rocked a CB sticker on his board..A sticker that he drove all the way to the Skate Park to get, just so he could represent on the road. Big thanks and congrats to Greg!

Optimist Club The Great Optimist Fishout 2015, presented by Southeastern Honda, was most likely the largest we have seen. One family came to the Skate Park yesterday

SATURDAY | MAY 23

and told us that they were number 491. Wow! That means 491 kids and their families signed up to go fishing together on April 25, 2015. The Fishout is the brainchild of Frank Dreyer, Sr. (Rest In Peace) who came

up with the concept in 1982 and put it into action in 1983 for its introductory year. The “Legend” continues each year with one real goal in mind: to catch the tagged $10,000 fish! Kids must catch their own fish and take it to get weighed and logged. The top three biggest fish in ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14-16 win cash prizes from the Cocoa Beach Optimist Club. Winners received $25, $50, and $75 increments. There were vendors from the Save the Manatee Club, the

Sea Turtle Preservation Society, Merritt Island Football, MarineMax, and more. Sonny’s BBQ catered the lunches, while Mr. J’s Ice Cream Truck kept us all cool! Jimmy Buffett and other good “fishin’ music” was keeping the mood in the air while kids were reeling in all types of fish during the threehour competition. Seagulls flew by, manatees and turtles made an appearance, and families enjoyed the day supporting their favorite anglers. Of course we all want to catch the $10,000 fish, but in the end the reward is for all the adults who get to witness the hundreds of smiles from the kids. We would like to thank all of the Members and Volunteers that helped make this wonderful event possible. The Cocoa Beach Optimist Club is also a proud sponsor of our Cocoa Beach Skate Park programs, so for that we want to say “Thank You!!!” The motto of the Optimist Club is to be “A Friend of Youth,” and that they are. To get involved, join or support this important club, go to www. cocoabeachoptimistclub.org for more info. Happy Birthday Grace, Elijah, Max, Corey, and Jake! Too many birthdays! Join us on May 20 for Grace’s Birthday Session! Lastly, when one of us loses a family member, we all lose a family member. This page is dedicated in loving memory to Norine Hessemer.

Florida State Paddleboard Championships By John Hughes The 15th Annual Florida State Paddleboard Championship was held April 4 at Lori Wilson Park in conjunction with the Easter Surf Festival. Since the event was moved from the Cocoa Beach Pier, the course was changed to a 5-mile race to the Pier and back, which was shorter than the traditional 7-mile course. The weather decided to cooperate this year, and we

had perfect conditions with a light winds, a small swell, and very comfortable temperatures. As a result, we had a good turnout of paddlers, with 59 attending. Stand Up paddlers were well

race. Over a dozen dashed through the water and sand for the swim, paddle, and run event and they had a great time. Hopefully we can resume this event next year.

represented, as always, but we also had good attendance from traditional prone paddleboards, surfskis, and outrigger canoes. The standout performance was, once again, Reid Hyle on his surfski. He had a blistering time of 0:39:26, well ahead of anyone. This was despite having a line thrown in front of him from an idiot fisherman on the Pier, causing him to stop and lose valuable time unwinding the line from his rudder post. The fastest time on SUP was from youngster Kieran Grant with a time of 0:51:03 in the 14’ Category. Among the women, Victoria Burgess clocked a very good time of 0:59:32, barely squeaking by local paddler Kristen Apotsos in the shorebreak. The traditional King and Queen of the Beach was not scheduled this year due to a lack of participation in the previous two years. However, a number of paddlers asked to have it anyway, so an impromptu race was put together after the 5-mile

Boardrider ofthe Month

Grace Marhoefer by Jenny Bilchak

While meeting this month’s Boardrider, Grace Marhoefer (aka “Amazing Grace the Ace”) downtown at the Tiny Turtle I could tell the summer is fast upon us -- ice cream cones quickly melting from the intense sun and reggae music muting the sounds of sandy kids running around from the day’s beach adventure… Grace and I sat at one of the picnic tables and started to chat about her own day, and both of us could only get parts of the conversation going before being pleasantly interrupted by friends and acquaintances. I realized during these moments Grace had a striking quality about her demeanor and admirable confidence. This 11-yearold shows freedom from doubt and a strong belief in herself and her abilities. Grace first started to skate while living in Orlando at the age of 6 at a neighbor’s birthday party and realized right away that she liked the rush of going down the banks. Not long

after that, her family moved to Cocoa Beach and her new neighbor got her back on a board. Around the same time, Grace went to a summer surf camp and found another love: our ocean. Even though she loved surfing, skating was Grace’s priority because of one specific Ron Jon billboard. The image of our very own Leah Taylor was splayed across it, and Grace wanted to be up there too. With a few years of commitment and dedication, Grace is now “gracing” the front of Ron Jon’s store where her friend Leah once was. I asked Grace how she got where she is today and, moreover, where does she wants to go next. “My mom and dad got me where I am, but lots of practice and support did too,” she told me. Grace practices almost three hours a day between bowl and street skating. Every other Wednesday she meets with

her Graffiti Skate Team, and they travel around the state while going to different competitions. Grace just went to one over the weekend at Kona Skate Park in Jacksonville where she took 2nd in the Womens Division Finish. Grace has been a staple on Todd and Lauren Holland’s surf team for the last two years as well. With these mentors and practices under her belt there’s no sign of anything stopping this little lady! Grace wanted to give shoutouts to her mom and dad, Scooter, the 4th St. Shredders, and her sponsors, Lake Skate Boards, Cocoa Beach Skate Park, Graffiti Skate Zone, and Ron Jon’s. To all the kids who are just a little scared to try something new, Grace said, “Don’t ever give up! Have confidence!”.

On May 16 at noon we will be joining hands at Lori Wilson Park to send a message to our government leaders that we say “No” to fossil fuels, and “Yes” to a safe, healthy, and sustainable future with clean energy. Hands Across the Sand is an international grassroots event founded by Floridian Dave Rauschkolb in October 2009 designed to demonstrate local opposition to offshore drilling that is dirty, dangerous, and

over 210 million gallons of oil flowed into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the largest oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. There was extensive damage to wildlife and marine habitats, as well as fishing

The truth is that those seismic tests, by opening future fossil fuel deposits to development and exploitation, are likely, in the long run, to hurt human beings at least as much. In order to stop climate change we must keep fossil fuels in the ground. As the federal government proposes offshore drilling for oil off the Atlantic coast, now is the time to stand up to the oil industry. It’s time to move America beyond oil and into a clean energy future. The fossil fuel industry is wrecking our climate and it’s not an investment if it’s hurting the planet. It’s our mission, our passion, and our duty to fight for what we all love and I hope you would expect this from Surfrider. We fight for the safety and health of our oceans and those communities who depend on the ocean for their livelihood. Please join us.

unsustainable. Hands Across the Sand is about embracing energy sources that will sustain our planet and is endorsed by national environmental organizations including the Surfrider Foundation, Sierra Club, and Oceana. A clean energy policy is the path to job growth, a vibrant economic future, and long-term energy independence. New clean energy, in combination with reduced consumption, will help us break our addiction to fossil fuels. April 20 marked the fiveyear anniversary of BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster. Oil gushed for 87 days and

and tourism industries. Even years later, dolphins and other marine life continue to die in record numbers with infant dolphins dying at six times the normal rate. Energy companies want to employ seismic airgun testing to locate oil reserves beneath the seabed in preparation for a round of offshore licensing scheduled for 2018. At that point, the companies desire to bid for and acquire actual drilling leases. Surfrider has condemned this plan because seismic testing involves the use of sonic blasts that are harmful if not deadly to all sea life.

Fishing Reports

Fishing with WeeMan By Capt. Jamie Glasner www.finandflycharters.com

April Fools

By Capt. Scott Bussen of the Relentless II www.fishrelentless.com

I think we fisherman have been the victims of an elaborate April Fool’s joke. It started in March with the early arrival of a few dolphin (mahi). The initial writing on the wall was pointing to an early arrival of the colorful piscatorial acrobats. Hence, the joke was on us when the mahi decided to vacate their initial migratory patterns. To add a bit of salt on the wound, there seems to be a plethora of them on the east side of the Gulf Stream. Haha! Very funny... Who knew that dolphin are beautiful, smart, and have an annoying sense of humor? Thank God April is over and last month’s long practical joke came to an end! Maybe I’m exaggerating a little bit... There were actually a few decent catches on the west side of the Stream; it just never seemed to be too consistent. The fish seemed to be decentsized, but there weren’t very many of the larger models. Hopefully May will change

things for the better. Conditions last month were pretty darn good for mahi fishing. Temps and clarity were as close to ideal as you can get. We just seem to be missing the weedlines, breaks, and the fish. Part of the problem may lie with the fact that the winds have been all around the compass. Seems like every day the

wind was out of a different direction than the day before. If we could just fall into a bit of a southeast wind pattern, hopefully things will change to the way they should be in May. Speaking of change, we are

getting ready to enter my favorite time of year: the opening of grouper season. There’s not really a whole bunch I can say about this except… get a bunch of big live baits and head out to get some! The early season should be best before the grouper start heading back toward the Carolinas. The fish could be in as shallow as the first reefs and wrecks, or you may have to look as deep as the cones. There should be enough grouper around to make it worth your while to spend a little time looking. Just remember to bring plenty of livies, as the elusive red snapper will likely be a nuisance. Depending on the depth, you might have a shot at some triggers, sea bass, cobia, or amberjack. The slow trolling in May can be pretty darn good too. There should be plenty of kings on the reef and there’s also a good shot at some cobia, blackfin tuna, mahi, sailfish, and possibly a big wahoo. People always ask me the best month to fish out of the Port and I always tell them May! There are way too many options; you have no choice. You. Must. Get. Offshore.

I had the pleasure of fishing and working with Jason Acuna, aka Weeman, from Jackass for a photo shoot for VonZipper sunglasses. When I got the call for this trip I couldn’t tell you how stoked I was to be able to hang out and fish with him. The day came and we set out on our journey into the Indian River Lagoon. Our targeted species for our short trip was redfish. We had only 45 minutes to fish and shoot the photos so that he could be back in time for a photo shoot at Ron Jon’s. We caught four nice slot sized redfish for the shoot and had a blast doing it. I can’t wait to see the photos when they come out. Fishing with Weeman was an adventure on its own, we were cracking jokes and telling funny stories of all the things we’ve done in the past that

is somewhat Jackass related. As we finished our shoot we grabbed some lunch at the new Long Doggers here in Cocoa Beach. The food was amazing and I can’t tell you how many people wanted a photo with him while we were there, it was crazy! Well, on to the fishing report. The inshore bite has been pretty decent for redfish and trout, the bite has been early in the morning before it gets too hot out. Fishing the schools of mullet

with jigs and jerk baits gets the job done, fish have all sizes ranging from small to big ones. The ocean bite has been on fire, whether you are fishing close to the beach or offshore on the reefs. The tarpon are now here intermixed with the bait fish along the beach. There’s also sharks, bonito, jacks, redfish, and barracuda in the mix. On the outside reefs the kingfish bite has been on. The bait of choice for all the species i’ve mentioned is slow trolling live ponies which you can catch in your cast net along the beach, just look for the pelicans diving. That’s all I have for you this month, I hope it helps you all in catching that big trophy fish. See you on the water!

Air Force Reservists support SpaceX launch for ISS by 45th Space Wing Public Affairs

When rockets are launched into space, the powerful sound of ignition, then lift off, can be heard from miles around. Another sound that can be heard shortly after a rocket is airborne from Florida’s Space Coast is the sound of rotor blades chopping through the coastal airways. Prior to every Space Coast rocket launch, Airmen from the 920th Rescue Wing at nearby Patrick Air Force Base launch two HH-60G Pave Hawks, like the ones seen in Army war movies, to secure the launch hazard area beneath the rocket’s path and to ensure Atlantic Ocean mariners are safe. Space Exploration Technologies’ (SpaceX) successful launch of their Falcon 9 Dragon spacecraft April 14, 2015 was no different. Rescue Wing Airmen were on scene hours prior to the launch to clear and secure the Eastern Range.

It was SpaceX’s fourth Falcon 9 launch of the year, and the company’s sixth operational re-supply mission to the space station. A combined team of military, government civilians, and contractors from across the 920th RQW and 45th Space Wing provided support to the mission, including aircrew, maintenance, weather forecasts, launch and range operations, security, safety, and public affairs. The Dragon spacecraft is filled with more than 4,300 pounds of supplies and payloads, including critical materials to directly support about 40 of the more than 250 science and research investigations that will occur during Expeditions 43 and 44, according to NASA.

Science payloads will study new ways to possibly counteract the microgravity-induced cell damage seen during spaceflight, the effects of microgravity on the most common cells in bones, gather new insight that could lead to treatments for osteoporosis and muscle wasting conditions, continue studies into astronaut vision changes, and test a new material that could one day be used as a synthetic muscle for robotics explorers of the future. After five weeks at the space station, the spacecraft will return to earth with more than 3,000 pounds of cargo, including crew supplies, hardware and computer resources, science experiments, and space station hardware -- and then splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja, California.

Restaurant of the Month Mexico’s Grill All start with their homemade corn tortillas, grilled to perfection. Choose from six different types of meat, including grilled fish. The toppings are also all authentically Mexican, with most topped with only onions and cilantro, others with pico de gallo – or cabbage, when it comes to fish. Those unfamiliar with Mexican sandwiches will find a pleasant surprise here, and are sure to won over by their gorditas and tortas. “They’re not your typical American sandwich,” laughs Carlos. “These are the real Mexican thing. For the

gordita, we make the dough for a Mexican pocket bread that is fried and stuffed with your choice of meat, topped with lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream. “My favorite, the torta, is all about the bread – a kind of roll but very light that comes in two times per week from a Mexican bakery. Again, it comes with your choice of meat and is topped with lettuce, pico, guacamole, cheese, and sour cream. With marinated pork? Crazy good!” Mexico’s Grill is located at 5675 N. Atlantic Ave. in Cocoa Beach. They offer Mexican and American sodas and beer. They’ll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with $1 tacos and $1 Coronitas all day and evening. Carlos and Pedro also plan on expanding their menu with platters in the near future and will offer catering to bring the real Mexico to both home and office. Call (321) 613-3850.

Marine Max “A wide variety of financial services are offered at each of our retail locations. We offer our customers the ability to finance new or used boat purchases and to purchase extended service contracts and arrange insurance coverage, including boat property, credit life, and accident, disability, and casualty insurance coverage.” Wehrman himself has deep connections to boating; his father was a US Navy Captain and as such, was was engrained early on with what he likes to call “The Water Gene.” “Our family literally travelled the world during my father’s Naval career and I was exposed to every imaginable variety of boats, both large and small. Like Father, like son, as the saying

goes,” Wehrman smiles. “I too was a US Naval Officer as well as a USCG Licensed 2nd Mate Any Ocean, Any Tonnage sailing for Gulf Oil. Water and boating is indeed in my DNA. Even today on those rare days off if the weather is good, my wife Peggy and I are out on the water boating with family and friends – that will never change!” Wehrman’s passion for boating is hard to contain, and this overflows into his position with MarineMax. “We don’t just work here, we are boaters too and we live the boating lifestyle with our customers,” he explains. “We are dedicated to making sure they have the best time on the water! We’re all boaters with such passion for the water we can’t help but share it.” “As employees and as people, just like our customers, we are United by Water.” Cocoa’s MarineMax is located at 1410 King St. Call them locally at (321) 636-3142 and visit them online at: www. marinemax.com

Sunday’s Total=$5.62, Goal=$9.88 budget for 2 people, Under budget $4.26 It’s important to me to make the freshest food possible. I could’ve bought canned soups and saved more money. I’m lucky I had the choice. We might have missed a few vitamins but we had enough to eat. We even had a little leftover pasta salad the following Monday for lunch. The beef stew was the biggest surprise overall. It was much more expensive than I originally budgeted. Overall, it was interesting experiment. Consider the challenge for week or just a day. I’m sure you’ll be surprised.

The Movies

Director: Alex Garland

Stars: Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vankinder
Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) is a computer programmer who gets an invitation from a scientist Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac) to assist him with a top-secret experiment at his home. The experiment is for Caleb to participate in a Turing Test -- to analyze a machine by asking questions in order to see if it can think or has artificial intelligence. The subject is a lifelike being named Ava (Alicia Vankinder.) What starts as a simple task for Caleb slowly turns into a game of suspicion and uncertainty as he begins to question Nathan and his motives. Gleeson fits the role perfectly and Isaac shows his talent and diversity, however, the standout is Vankinder, who plays Ava with such believability it rivals that of David from “Prometheus.” The film feels like an Asian production with its small cast, isolated location, and a dark tone. Garland’s clever writing creates intelligent conversation and unpredictable twists and turns all supported by a wonderfully diverse soundtrack, all of which make the story engaging and original. “Ex Machina” is an original thriller that discusses the depravity of man and our fascination with artificial intelligence, and explores the dangers that may come of it. Grade: A

Stars: Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Paul Walker

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and the gang have settled down, and Deckard Shaw (Statham) comes looking for retribution for what happened to his brother (the villain from the previous film in the successful franchise). The plot could’ve been simple for a movie of this genre, but with Walker’s untimely death, production was halted and they had to add more characters and subplots to the film. This convolutes the story and makes the film longer, but the story still remains enjoyable. In addition to the original cast, familiar faces return, along with newcomers Kurt Russell and Tony Jaa, both of whom play memorable roles. With “Furious 7” being the seventh installment, there are even more implausible stunts and action sequences, but let’s face it: a lengthy franchise gets a little silly eventually. Considering on of the main actors passed away, they still have Wan – someone who usually directs horror movies at the helm -- and the cast and crew refused to start over from scratch, everything still works. The fast cars and furious action are what spurred the series’ success, but the focus this time was on saying goodbye to a beloved star, ending the film with a moving tribute to Walker and his character. Mall hero Paul Blart (Kevin James) is attending a conference while on vacation in Las Vegas, but his relaxation is short-lived when he must once again answer the call of duty, stop some art thieves, and save the day. The joke formula is simple: there’s the premise, which usually gets a chuckle or falls flat, so then the joke continues attempting for a real laugh and if that doesn’t work, James relies on physical comedy (because the movie can’t have enough overweight jokes, right?). The story tries to be serious at points with Blart being protective of his daughter and dealing with loneliness, but the sentiment quickly fades so the hijinks can recommence. And though every criminal in the story is a highly skilled professional, they are still defeated by Blart’s luck and clumsiness. Neal McDonough plays the villain, but his only “standout” scene is screaming about his different colored eyes. “Paul Blart 2” is a wonderful movie experience… if you’re in the mood for a silly comedy or you happen to be a 10-year- old. Inquire of Romeo By Romeo Pomodoro If I were you, Kevin, I’d give up. I’ve met her boyfriend too, and if you continue on this path, you may end up getting more than your hole punched!

Dear Romeo,

Romeo, I have a big crush on the girl who works at my local café. I stop there every morning on my way to work to get a cup of coffee and a muffin and to see “Daisy’s” sunshiney smile. Last week, she punched the last hole in my frequent friendly customer card, gave me my free mocha, looked up at me, and gave me what I took to be an unusually bright, toothy grin. I noted a certain gleam in her eye and couldn’t help myself from complimenting her on her loveliness at that moment and asked her why she seemed so particularly cheery that morning. Apparently, her boyfriend of two weeks had proposed to her the night before and she was over the moon. I was heartbroken at first, but promised myself that I wouldn’t let it get in the way of my pursuing her. I mean, come on! Two weeks? I’ve known Daisy for like six months! Plus, I’ve met her boyfriend (he’s some beach bum who just started coming in) and he’s an insensitive jerk. And he doesn’t even drink coffee! I know in my heart that Daisy would be much happier with me. But what do you think? Am I just being delusional? Should I give up or move forward? Time is running out.

Dave R. Indian Harbour Beach

My husband and I enjoy... let’s say, “athletic” sexual relations. Among some of our amorous achievements are copulating suspended from our bedroom ceiling in a kind of sling “Ron” fashioned (he’s an engineer) and fornicating wildly in a speeding airboat (Ron was steering). But last month, our love of naughty hijinks took a turn for the worse when I tumbled off our roof in the middle of the night while we were engaged in lovemaking. Not only was it highly embarrassing -- my neighbors seeing me lying motionless in the grass in my Catwoman suit and my husband up above in a Batman costume yelling for help because he was unable to untether himself from the chimney harness he made (Ron’s not a very good engineer) -- but I broke my right arm in the fall. I hate the

thought of giving this hobby up -- we simply hate traditional bedroom sex -- but we are getting older obviously and aren’t sure how much longer we can continue on. Do you have any creative solutions?

“Mary” Cocoa Beach Well Adela, I have many creative solutions as it happens, all of which are outlined in my latest lovemaking manual, “The Tantric Tarantula: and 1,001 Other Sexual

Positions That Will Help You Rediscover the Pleasures of Intimate Contact, Tap Into Your Youth, Prevent Aging, and Win Successful Friends, and a Few Cooking Recipes My Mother Passed Down to Me Before She Died of Breast Cancer, Including Some Conversations with Angels and Some Reflections on the Decline of the Ottoman Empire (1830-1908)with Extensive Footnotes” sadly shortened by my unimaginative, market-obsessed publishers to simply: “Blow Me on a Bungee.” But you broke your arm, you say? That’s rather humerus. Ouch!.

Romeo, Does size really matter? Please settle this once and for all.

Jake W. Cocoa Beach This is a question I’ve long been hoping to answer, Tyler, and I’m happy you asked it. Let’s put it this way: I have had many nicknames in my days of sexual activity, far too many to include here. But here are a few, just to give you an idea: “Romeo Vesuvio,” “Longfellow,” “The Erector Set,” “Dow Jones” (during the mid-’90s economic boom), “Romeo My Boat,” “Turgid God of Heavenly Love,” and once, during a dark patch following a bicycling injury, “Limpy.” However, I think that my current sobriquet will provide you with the answer you seek: “Too Big To Fail.” You will hear it if you listen closely on the lips of many beachside females. It’s a mouthful (so to speak), but far better than my poor cousin Alfredo Alfresco’s current nickname: “Ponzi.” M AY 2015

Out and About

There was a great party at WFIT last month, and it was 40 years in the making. Food, music, and fun all came together to celebrate forty years of public radio right here on the Space Coast.

These pretzels were making people thirsty… So they had to drink more beer! Thanks to everyone who came to visit The Beachside Resident at our tent at the first-ever Brewmaster’s Invitational!

Hooks were baited, lines were cast, and a record number of kids took part in the 27th Annual Great Optimist Fishout on 4/25/15. There were a total of twelve prize winners, and an honorable mention goes to Trevor for “The One That Got Away”!
