It’s All Water Under the Bridge... I would like to thank Frank Dreyer, our former Creative Director and one of my dearest friends. Most of Frank’s accomplishments in the past few years have had a very direct impact to our community. Frank taught me how to tell a better story and all the gigantic ways to do it. Thanks to Frank our community has told our stories on a national level.

Frank, thank you for all you have done for The Beachside Resident and your community. We are all so grateful! Good luck in your new venture. Respectfully, Craig Harriman

“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.” - Lao Tzu M AY 201 6 VOL 12.05

A Room by Any Other Name By Jean Newell

During my three plus decades as a Realtor, Marketing Director and Consumer Advisor, I’ve discovered there should be a real estate decoder handbook to help us decipher our clients’ secret language. Our northern home buyers are just as easily confused by our real estate terminology and building jargon. Case in point, the word duplex. In Florida, a duplex means an attached, single story, two unit dwelling. However, in some parts of the northeast a duplex represents a two story building with multiple apartments. Just to make sure we totally confuse our clients, someone, somewhere started renaming perfectly good descriptive rooms with interesting, yet sometimes baffling substitutions. I remember, as a child of the 60s in south Florida, we watched our black and white, rabbit-eared TV in a room known as the Florida Room. Everyone had one. Some were converted porches, while others were part of the original floor plan. I always wondered how a room got its name from a state and what did people called their TV rooms from other parts of our country. Were people in the Lone Star State watching television in the Texas Room? And would it be the largest room in the house? What about people from Maine? Did they spend time in the Maine Room? I know if my father said he was

going to the “main room” you could be assured it wasn’t to watch TV. When did this trend start of renaming rooms? The Florida Room soon became the Family Room, but with Mom at the gym, Dad playing golf and the kids at soccer, no families actually resided in the Family Room. The change had to be made, this time to Leisure Room. However, our overachiever society felt too guilty enjoying a Leisure Room. This resulted in yet another name for our TV room. The Florida Room went high tech with the Media Center. When will it end, this renaming of rooms? The possibilities are endless. Is it conceivable that in the near future we might have new names for the kitchen like Microwave Cubicle, Command Headquarters, or my personal favorite... Interactive Automated Food Technology Center.

(321) 613-3993 DOWNTOWN COCOA BEACH 210 N. ORLANDO AVE This year brings the 5th Annual Footprints in the Sand Kidney Walk hosted by the National Kidney Foundation of Florida. Every year, the Kidney Walk takes place over Mother’s Day Weekend. Here we have some words from Debbie Harder, a loving mother who lost her beloved daughter, Jessica, to kidney disease just last year. Debbie shows that even with this terrible disease, love, hope, and compassion will always remain. Jessica Harder was an amazing, inspirational young woman who lived her life by making the most of it. By the age of 27, she had overcome more obstacles in her life than many 90 year olds. By the time she was three years old, she had undergone two major open heart surgeries for a severe heart deformity called Tetralogy of Fallot. At seven, she was diagnosed with Renal Dysplasia which had affected both kidneys. As she grew, her kidneys stayed “baby sized.” She was eventually placed on peritoneal dialysis for a grueling nine to 12 hours a day. While on dialysis, Jessica continued to try and live her life as a normal preteen- skateboarding, playing softball and even learning to surf. It was her love of the ocean, surfing, and her kidney disease that lead her to meet Rich Salick. Rich immediately took her under his wing and instilled his adoration of the ocean and taught her to be a young patient advocate for people with kidney disease. No matter how many times her nephrologist said that she shouldn’t be surfing while on peritoneal dialysis, she would argue

12

thebeachsideresident.com

M AY 2016

that she “had to live, didn’t she?” She begged and pleaded every day to be taken to 2nd Light at Patrick Air Force Base so she could catch another wave. When she finally got her transplant, we all thought, “Oh, great! A new life was given to her.” Jessica was grateful for her new kidney, which she named “Emma” after her donor’s mother. Unfortunately, Jessica suffered many setbacks after her transplant. She contracted viral encephalitis and had three strokes which caused her to lose her sense of balance. She became unable to surf but her love for the ocean never stopped. She constantly fought for kidney patients and help for them after their transplants. The anti-rejection drugs were expensive and often people couldn’t afford them so they would lose their gift of life. She couldn’t afford them herself on what she made. She reached out to Social Security and was told by a supervisor there that, “if she would quit taking her medication, she would reject her kidney and could get back on

“I first met Jessica through Rich Salick back in the late 90s, when he explained how counter-productive and actually harmful the state’s then-current rules were for kidney disease patients. We reasoned it could be helpful to personalize the struggles associated with kidney disease to the policymakers in the capitol. So Jessica and Rick came to Tallahassee and shared their compelling stories. Their testimonies were in large part responsible for helping convince the state of Florida to improve its post-surgery prescription/medication policies for kidney recipients.” -District #8 Congressman Bill Posey dialysis then everything would be paid for.” Throughout this, she continued to fight for herself and people like her by going to Washington D.C. and speaking before congress about changing the laws on post-transplant medication. Six years after her transplant, she rejected “Emma,” her kidney. She was once again in uncharted territory, fighting to stay alive on Hemodialysis. During the next seven years, she had 18 surgeries and grafts just to find an access for them to give her dialysis. All the while, she continued her fight to help people with kidney disease and disabilities by talking and writing to them on social media to give them pep talks about their disease, helping them find a way to dialysis and helping connect them with others facing similar situations so they wouldn’t feel alone with their illness. She never gave up on life. On May 1, 2015, two nights before she died, Jessica was still up at 3:30 am explaining to another kidney patient just how

important it was to go to their dialysis and how it would save their life. Throughout her life, Jessica had a constant commitment to not only staying alive but to living her life. The beach, wind and the waves gave her so many incredible memories to take with her on her next journey. Jessica touched many lives but she was also blessed to have many people touch hers. I hope through telling her incredible story that I may help people like her with kidney disease to live their lives to the fullest.

Even though Jessica’s life was a challenge from day one, when Jessica was called to heaven she donated her corneas to give someone the gift of sight. She was a recipient and a donor. Not many people can live a life as full as hers. Learn more about Jessica and people like her by coming to the 2016 Footprints in the Sand Kidney Walk. Recipe ofthe Month

Noodlin’ Around By Samantha Deebel

I love a good bowl of spicy noodles. Ramen or Pho or Curry, whatever the spice as long as it’s with noodles, I’m happy! There are many kinds of noodles available but my favorite is rice noodles, the thick linguine kind, not the vermicelli. The wonderful thing about making a noodle bowl is that you can put as little or as much as you want as toppings and condiments. Enjoy!

3 quarts chicken or vegetable broth. Use low sodium for better flavor, as other ingredients add salty flavors. ⅓ cup fresh ginger, chopped 4-5 teaspoons fish sauce 2-3 teaspoons soy sauce

Heat the broth and ginger

on medium high heat. Add a small can of aduki beans, if you like beans. Simmer for five10 minutes then add the fish sauce and soy sauce. Cook the noodles according to package, drain and set aside. Put desired amount of noodles in a bowl and ladle the broth over it. Top with the following garnishes:

Hard boiled eggs Sliced spring onions Chopped fresh cilantro Pickled okra Shredded bok choy Shredded cabbage Diced cooked chicken

Diced marinated, cooked tofu Roasted peanuts For spicy flavoring: Sambal oelek Cayenne pepper Sriracha sauce Dried chilis Fresh red chilies, chopped fine Curry powder I like to have coconut ice cream after this meal with fresh mango. If you can’t find coconut ice cream, use vanilla and sprinkle it with lots of dried coconut flakes! You can follow me on Instagram @dagnaula to see pictures of my food creations. Thanks to Coastal Produce for sponsoring my column!

Surfrider By Jackie Beatty

Winning Perhaps no group is more excited over the decision not to allow oil drilling in the Atlantic than the Surfrider Foundation. After objections from environmental groups and the Surfrider Foundation, the Obama administration reversed course on their decision to drill in the Atlantic. The decision was also influenced by an organized outpouring of resistance from the mayors and municipal councils in more than 100 coastal communities in the four states that would be affected by the drilling. “With this decision, coastal communities have won a ‘David vs. Goliath’ fight against the richest companies on the planet, and that is a cause for tremendous optimism for the well-being of future generations,” said Jacqueline Savitz, the vice president for U.S. Oceans. The Surfrider Foundation spent more than a year collecting signatures from people in coastal businesses and communities up and down the East Coast who feared that offshore drilling would negatively impact their way of life. It presented those signatures on a surfboard to Congress in February, advocating for government officials to protect the waters of the Atlantic. “We took it to D.C. and gave it to the Department of the Interior and then a month later Obama changed his policy and took offshore drilling off the next five year agenda so I believe he saw the board and it literally influenced his decision”, said Sandy Beach, Chairperson for the Cocoa Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Even though we’ve had some success for the Atlantic, we are not out of the woods yet. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) wants to go forward with seismic testing in the Atlantic, drill into new areas of Alaska, has longterm plans to drill in the Atlantic after 2022, and has put little effort into even thinking about renewable energy. “The administration must take Arctic leases out of the final five-year plan,” said Cindy Shogan, executive director of the Alaska Wilderness League. “No place has potentially

more to lose due to climate change than the Arctic.” Environmentalists in Florida are also celebrating the failure of an oil industry-backed bill they say would have opened a pathway to fracking in the ecologically sensitive Everglades wetlands. “It’s a very good day for democracy, and a good day for the Florida Everglades,” said Kim Ross of Floridians Against Fracking, a grassroots alliance of activists that helped organize numerous rallies in recent months, including a 100-strong protest at the Capitol building in Tallahassee. The death of the fracking bill in the state senate was a victory for common sense. Florida’s porous and fragile limestone bedrock and the underground Biscayne Aquifer are the only source of fresh water for more than three million south Florida residents. “We have to keep working until we get what we truly want, a ban on fracking in Florida and a renewable energy infrastructure so we are less dependent on fossil fuels,” said Ross. Although we have had wins for the Atlantic and Florida, the Cocoa Beach Chapter needs your help with local issues such as the pollution in the Indian River Lagoon and helping local businesses move away from plastics and styrofoam. Hands Across the Sand is this month to raise awareness about seismic airgun testing and preventing future offshore drilling in Florida, so please join us. These recent wins for the Atlantic and Florida illustrate our power when we come together to support the wellbeing of our community.

Fitness

Your Gut Instinct By Michael Slotin with Nataleigh Palmer received microbes from an obese twin swiftly gained weight. It was discovered that the leaner twin had a greater diversity of gut flora than the heavier twin. The study further researched the effect that a diet high in saturated fat and low in fiber had on the friendly bacteria. The low fiber, high fat diet prevented new flora from being incorporated into the digestive system. Essentially, less diversity in the gut means higher numbers on the scale. Beans and grains are a great way to add fiber to your diet and provide a better environment for friendly flora. You can assist this process of improving your digestive workforce by adding cultured foods with every meal. Consider adding kimchi to your breakfast eggs. Sauerkraut as a side and kombucha to drink with your lunch. Maybe kefir for dessert. These foods are easy and inexpensive to make but do require prep work a day or two ahead. Another tip is soaking grains like brown rice, quinoa and amaranth for at least 12 hours before eating in order to initiate sprouting. When sprouting begins in a seed, the seed germ will start utilizing its own sugar to grow and will leave the grain with less sugar and more protein at the time of cooking. This is true of beans as well, they must be soaked for 24-36 hours to begin the sprouting process. Remember, it takes time to improve your diet. Don’t look for quick fixes. Explore your options. If you’re interested in looking and feeling your best, don’t neglect your intestinal flora. Your stomach and waistline will thank you.

They say you are what you eat. This phrase is more true than people realize. Trainers love to wax poetic about the many benefits of exercise. But for weight loss, exercise will only get you to 20% of your goal. 80% of the progress comes from your diet. I like to remind people that burning a pound through exercise alone requires 3,500 calories. Runner’s World claims you burn roughly 100 calories a mile on average. It would take a running program of 35 miles a week or five miles a day for you to lose a pound. Frankly, there’s too much attention focused on exercise for weight loss and not enough on a healthy diet. One of the easiest ways to maintain a healthy diet is to prepare your own foods. A little time set aside in the day to cook your own meals will provide the greatest fitness gains. What you eat matters as much as the actual amount you eat. A one-two punch for maintaining a healthy weight is cutting out the sugar and eating foods that promote healthy gut flora. Gut flora are the little microorganisms that help breakdown and process your food. Gut flora can be diminished through alcohol, antibiotics, certain medications, refined simple carbohydrates such as white bread, and processed foods such as cookies and crackers. A recent study led by Dr. Jeffrey Gordon at the Washington University School of Medicine showed that “obese and lean human twins have clear differences in their gut microbial communities.” These differences may play a pivotal role in how a person breaks down and processes energy in the body. The results were published in a journal of Science Magazine in 2013. Scientists fed the microbes of each twin into different groups of mice that had been raised in a germ-free environment. Mice populated with microbes from a lean twin stayed slim. Mice that

Resident ofthe Month By Nataleigh Palmer

DR. DUANE

DE FREESE

March’s massive algae bloom and fish kill had everyone pointing fingers. Taxpayers blamed lawmakers, inland residents blamed coastal, and protesters with signs on State Road 520 let their voices be heard. Experts have been working nonstop to find out more about the causes, and solutions to prevent another fish kill. One of those experts is Dr. Duane De Freese, Executive Director of the Indian River Lagoon, or IRL Council. He holds a doctorate in Marine Biology and has been an avid surfer since the 70s. Obviously, De Freese knows water. The Indian River Lagoon Council’s territory reaches from Ponce Inlet in Volusia County all the way down to Jupiter Inlet at the north end of Palm Beach County. It covers five counties and 50 cities. The Indian River Lagoon is long, very narrow, and relatively poorly flushed. It’s a super shallow system that is very biodiverse. De Freese pointed out that all of the things that make the lagoon special in its biodiversity also make it very vulnerable to human impact. “I’ve seen pictures on Facebook where people are blowing leaves and grass cuttings either into the lagoon or into a storm drain. So this idea that there isn’t a role for the citizen isn’t at all true. If every citizen would do the right thing it would actually make a difference.” Since the 70s the lagoon has been in a state of environmental flux. Projects were created to improve water quality by removing some forms of point source pollution. The community stopped pumping directly from wastewater treatment plants. Procedures were created to deal with stormwater. But no one anticipated Brevard’s enormous population boom. Rapid growth brought heavily fertilized lawns, a number of new homes with septic, and runoff that affected the groundwater. “We doubled our population and we’re now seeing the impact.”

STATE OF THE LAGOON After the latest algae bloom and fish kill, many

18

thebeachsideresident.com

M AY 2016

residents are concerned about the state of the lagoon. “The scale is important to consider even in the fish kill situation. We’ve got Lake Okeechobee and the impacts of the discharges down in St. Lucie River coming in at the southern. We have this fish kill and algae bloom in the northern end. But it’s a really big lagoon. There’s a lot of places in the middle where water quality is looking pretty good right now. If someone says ‘oh, the lagoon is dying,’ you almost have to ask, what segment of the lagoon are you talking about?” The exact origin of the brown algae and the trigger for the bloom however, remains a mystery. “We know they’re fueled by nutrients but maybe there’s some environmental trigger we don’t understand.”

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

HOW TO HELP

Currently excess nutrients are trapped in the system in the form of muck deposits. Roughly fifty, sixty years of people throwing their grass clippings and vegetation down storm water drains have collected on the lagoon bottom. “The big issue is searching for a way to remove muck and decrease that nutrient load right off the bat. But it doesn’t make any sense to remove what’s there if we’re going to just put more stuff in. It’s like pulling water from one end of the hose and adding it to the other end. It never gets dry.” De Freese also added that we have to change the way we deliver stormwater. “We know we need to hold water back. We need to treat it before it gets released. We need to move it into the system more naturally so it’s not a giant bulk.” The combination of leaking septic, aging sewer systems, and other factors also contributed a nutrient load that chokes lagoon life. “All of those nitrogen and phosphorus loads need to get cut. If we did that we’ll start to see the system respond favorably.”

The lagoon is finite and eventually the system is overwhelmed. Since you can’t change population density, each person must decrease their pollutant outputs significantly to get back to that natural baseline. There’s a lot of things that the general public can do to make a difference. “We’re applying fertilizer at levels that are higher than ever because we want that green yard and lush foliage. We put more than we need and often apply it incorrectly.” Avoiding rolling, green lawns that edge up to the lagoon would be a start. “I don’t fertilize my lawn. We’re in Florida. We need to redefine what’s good landscape for a coastal community.” De Freese also recommends bagging your grass clippings or putting them in a trash can if you live along the water. The clippings may end up in the landfill but they’ll stay out of the lagoon. Another contaminate is old or failing septic systems. Many homeowners don’t know they’re failing or getting ready to fail. “We need to improve the wastewater system so those systems don’t

contribute nitrogen and phosphorous to the ground. There’s only two solutions, you’re either going to take them to an advanced septic system or we need to connect them with the city.”

PROJECTS De Freese named the four main components needed to move the needle toward recovery. Remove the excess nutrients, reduce nutrients we’re adding, restore and recover. The council is working in partnership with state and local governments and nonprofit organizations to better inform our citizens, remove excess nutrients, and use the best science we have to protect the system and generate funding. De Freese added that St. John’s River Management and South Water District and various state agencies and local governments are aggressively finding solutions to the problem. It may seem that nothing is happening but there’s a lot of work already underway. “By October, we’ll be administering 38 projects... But the response of the river is going to be slow.” Continues on Page 40

The Art Side

THE SEA TURTLE PRESERVATION SOCIETY Sea turtle hatching season is upon us, and it is our duty to educate ourselves and others about how to ensure that these amazing creatures continue to thrive. It’s never too early to start to learn about how to contribute to their success, and so we’re reaching out to all children in Brevard County who’d like to make a difference. The Sea Turtle Preservation Society is hosting an Open House Celebration of World Sea Turtle Day on Saturday, June 18th. As part of the celebration, STPS is offering an Art Contest for children ages 5-19 focusing on “How to Help Sea Turtles Survive.” Artwork is to be no larger than 12” x 15” and should depict suggestions on how to help the survival of sea turtles. Artwork must be turned in to the STPS Store no later than Friday, June 10th. On the back of your art, please print the name, address,

phone number, email address, and grade/age of the artist. Please also add if you want to keep or donate your artwork. Judging will be based on originality of the art and the message that it tells. Winners will be announced at the Open House at the Turtle House. After the contest, the artist can either claim the work of art or donate it to the Turtle House Foundation, which will offer it for public donations with the proceeds going to help turtles.

Skilled Labor By Nataleigh Palmer

Captain JEANETTE VASBINDER & the Crew of Wildside Tours Anytime you’re on a boat, it’s a good day. For two hours, Wildside Tours promises an eco-friendly, fun-filled cruise on a bimini-topped catamaran through sections of the river only accessible via boat. Our intrepid Captain Jeannette Vasbinder led us on an informative voyage on the Banana River. Our tour of the Thousand Islands Conservation Area and the Banana River Lagoon offered us the sights and sounds of wildlife as well as backyard views of some of the most beautiful waterfront homes in Cocoa Beach. Captain Vasbinder, or Captain Jeanette as she prefers to be called, is a Master Naturalist who studied advanced Biology and spent many years as a fishing and nature guide. Her crewmate for the day was Michelle Spahn, a former aquarium employee and glass boat tour guide turned Banana River naturalist. The comfortable catamaran launched from Ramp Road Park. It seats 18 people with plenty of room to stand or move with a pair of binoculars or camera to catch the action.

Thousand Island Conservation Area The Banana River Lagoon is 47 miles long and three miles wide. With no directional flow or tides, our captain mentioned, it’s basically a big piece of swamp land behind the Barrier Island. As we left the Ramp Road Park, we passed by the elegant homes along the Thousand Island Nature Preserve. The only neighbors behind them are the wildlife. The Preserve was purchased by the Environmentally Endangered Lands Program, the state of Florida, Brevard County and the City of Cocoa Beach over several years. It will never be built on, ensuring it will be carefully preserved for future generations to enjoy. The homes along the preserve were lovely and it was fascinating to see so much natural and manmade beauty in one place.

Bird Sightings Our captain lead us to many areas known for wildlife sightings. On a branch we saw an osprey, a white and brown feathered bird of prey, with her eggs.

20

thebeachsideresident.com

M AY 2016

Captain Jeanette explained, “Our osprey are the only bird of prey that only eats fish. That’s why we almost killed them all. We sprayed with DDT [insecticide] years ago and the birds developed very thin shells on their eggs.” The thin shells caused the eggs to crack, diminishing their numbers. The captain also slowed down the boat so we could get a closer look at a Blue Heron with a nest of babies. Everyone was spellbound as we watched breathlessly with cameras in hand. Flamingo fans need to check out the Roseate Spoonbill. It has a white head with pink and mauve wings and a specialized spoon-like beak for catching fish underwater. When it soars above you it looks like a sunset in flight.

Sea Mammals Everyone on the boat was delighted to see a manatee and her calf near a seawall poking their heads out at us. They blew bubbles as they surfaced and sounded like an exhausted horse as they let out a breath. A highlight of the trip was the hydrophone, an underwater microphone. Michelle placed the hydrophone underwater so we could listen to two dolphins chat. The dolphins sounded a little like a squeaky door and an airy kissing squeal. Later they jumped and leapt in the air, exciting every passenger onboard.

Fish Kill The fish kill was mentioned during our voyage. Captain Jeannette pulled out her schedule and flashed a solid week of cancellations. “Since we couldn’t work, we helped out. We took all the

cushions off the boat and hauled dead fish out of the river. The Fox 35 crew joined us on the boat. We tried to raise awareness.” When asked if she thought the river was recovering, Michelle remarked, “If you asked me three weeks ago when I was scooping out dead fish, I would’ve told you the whole river is dead. But now we’re seeing the birds and we’re seeing the mullet jumping. But there’s still a little hesitation. You wonder. We still don’t know.” The shock of the fish kill still weighs heavy on both women. Michelle added, “I helped clean up the fish...The smell was so bad. I remember that night going out to dinner and I smelled the chowder and I gagged.” Continues on Page 40

ON COCOA BEACH May is a month for the races. In Kentucky, they run for the roses. In Talladega, Dover, and Charlotte, NASCAR fans are spinning right round for their favorite drivers. Here in Cocoa Beach, the 7th Annual Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix Grand Prix brings the thunder. In the days leading up to the race, thousands of racing fans and spectators will flock to Cocoa Beach and join the locals to enjoy a slew of receptions and parties leading up to Thunder on Cocoa Beach. Then, on Sunday, May 15th, it’s off to the beaches to watch the various teams in their powerboats race each other around an approximately five mile course at speeds of up to 180 miles per hour.

RACE WEEK IN COCOA BEACH Although these explosive races only take place on one day, the Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix celebration actually starts on Wednesday, May 11th. The event commences with a party at

the Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront at their Longboards Tiki Beach Grille from 6pm-10pm. Open to the public, this party is the first gathering of various Super Boat sponsors, the media, VIP guests, and of course, the fans. It’s a sure way to get over the hump in the week. On Thursday, head to Juice N’ Java for the High Octane Kick Off Party. As the days to the race begin to count down, the anticipation mounts. The folks at Juice N’ Java are thrilled to channel this excitement into their party with plenty of food, drinks, live entertainment, and the opportunity to meet the various race teams in an intimate environment. As the weekend begins, Thunder On Cocoa

Beach really gets into gear. Starting Friday at 9am, it is down to business for all race teams as registration and inspection takes place. Boats and the teams will be in the Dry Pits, and all of the logistics and technical bits are getting situated. Then, for the first time ever, a convoy of sorts will begin at 3:30pm as the Parade of Super Boats begins make their way down A1A to downtown Cocoa Beach. If you can start your weekend festivities early, head over to Hunkerdown Hideaway Lounge for the Power Pre Party from 4pm-6pm. If you have the daily grind until 5pm, have no worries because both the Street Party on Minutemen Causeway and the Rev It UP VIP Race Party at Coconuts On the Beach will be in full force from

6pm-10pm. Check out the boats, meet the teams, and enjoy various food vendors, beverages, and live entertainment. The day before the races is one of the most jampacked for both the fans and the teams. There are more inspections and registration at Port Canaveral, and then the launching, testing, and viewing of the boats will take place at Bluepoints Marina from 10am-5pm. Race Village will be open at the Port from noon until 10pm, with even more food, live music, and Power Boats on display. Not to mention the Annual Miss Super Boat Bikini Contest! Restaurant ofthe Month

Jenna’s Breezeway By Rachel Bilchak

year doing different events. We’ve invested in Cocoa Beach, and now the community is investing in us.” Jenna and Brian love spending time with their customers, and love the environment they’ve been able to create. “You know that song, where they sing ‘you tore down paradise to put up a parking lot?’” said Jenna. “Well here, we tore down the parking lot and put paradise back up.”

There’s nothing better than good food, good company, and good fun. At Jenna’s Breezeway Grill, they’ve got all that in spades. Jenna and Brian Shank are a newly married couple who have never owned a restaurant before. Brian, originally from Orlando, has a background in construction. Jenna moved to Florida from Illinois after high school and immediately got into the restaurant industry. She volleyed between front and back of the house before moving to the Keys to get into commercial fishing. “I started with rod and reel, and then graduated to stone crab fishing.” said Jenna. “I got into that side of the business, selling to suppliers who sell to restaurants. For the most part of my adult life, I’ve been in this industry. This is my first time owning it.” Jenna then moved from the Keys up to Clermont to be closer to family. There she met Brian, and they were together for seven years before getting married last October. Just months before their wedding, they decided to purchase The Breezeway restaurant here in Cocoa Beach. They quickly transformed the place with bright colors, an improved menu, and a huge sandy backyard entertainment area that had previously been a parking lot. “We’re not on the beach but if you want to get off the beach and still feel like you’re in paradise, you can come here.” Jenna and Brian are thrilled with the welcome they’ve received. “We’ve met a lot of cool people in Cocoa Beach,” said Brian. ““Bruce Best from Nui Tiki did a lot of great stuff for us, he bends over backwards for us. We love the other business owners like Ed at the Fat Donkey, Rick and Patty

at Casablanca, Kenne over at Coastal Produce… All our neighbors are so cool. We’ve even traded plants. When we have music you’ll see ‘em outside dancing.” The Shanks have definitely integrated smoothly into the neighborhood. They took their love of the outdoors and poured that into their restaurant, creating a space like no other in Cocoa Beach- and the locals love it. There’s clean, raked sand surrounded by palm trees and flanked with tiki torches. Bright chairs and picnic tables offer casual comfort, and there’s even a fire pit to gather around if there’s ever a chill in the air. “We knew we wanted casual. We’re kid, pet, and handicapped friendly. I think we’re running 85% local, they’re here year round. If you can’t make the locals happy, you’ll fail in this town,” said Brian. “We need recreational areas, and that’s what this is. People come play horseshoes and corn hole, we’ve had hula hoop and limbo contests. Kids love it.” “Normally when you go out to eat, the kids are the one’s putting up a fuss trying to leave,” added Jenna. “Here, when the parents are ready to leave the kids are putting up a fight. They love it here. I’ve got some sand toys for them, I’ve got a big Jenga… It’s just a nice little place to relax.” When it comes to the food, Jenna and Brian aim for fresh never frozen, and source locally as often as possible. They get the freshest produce, and order their bread from a bakery in Cocoa. “If I don’t like it, we don’t serve it. And I’m picky!” said Brian. “Nobody had a kick-butt cheesesteak

sandwich, or a really good burger. We get compliments on our cheesesteak and our burgers, and we get compliments on our wings. I know those three items are big.” “Our chicken tenders, our fish bites, all of those are sliced when they’re ordered, hand dipped in batter on the spot when you order. It’s not frozen, I’m not taking it out of a bag and throwing it in the fryer.” said Jenna. “My cooks are great. They’re 150,000 percent dedicated to this team. Zack Armstrong has been with me since day one and I have to give him kudos. He came with the restaurant, he stayed on staff and he’s really helped me to grow this business…It’s all about teamwork. I always tell my staff, ‘There’s no ‘I’ in teamwork, there’s only an ‘I’ in selfish.” Already, Jenna and Brian have big plans for the future. They’re aiming to expand their indoor seating, and hoping to amp up their events. Jenna’s can be rented for private functions, and they also want to be involved with as many things going on in town as possible. “When people find out we have the space they love it. We can do catering with a full liquor bar to tents and tables and chairs. You can go to bigger venues, but you drop 15, 20 grand easy.” said Brian. “We’re also going to do more annual things. We want it to be our second, third, fifth, twentieth

Bartender ofthe Month

Jill Steinhauser

of Hunkerdown Hideaway

Bud Man supports our local bars, restaurants, bartenders, wait staff, musicians and hospitality industry. Thank You!

Thanks for letting Carroll Distributing Company serve you since 1960.

Cocoa Beach doesn’t mess around when it comes to Sunday Funday. One of the best ways to kick it off is to pop into Hunkerdown Hideaway, where Jill Steinhauser helms the infamous Bad A$$ Bloody Mary Bar. Jill has been a beachside resident on and off since her senior year of high school, and has been slinging drinks at Hunkerdown for a little over four years. A huge fan of cooking (and eating!), Jill brings her skills to to the Bad A$$ Bloody Mary Bar. From curried quail eggs to pickled okra, Jill’s culinary endeavors gets to be sampled by all who stop in- after passing a taste test by her sweet puppy Kona, of course! Where did the concept for the Bad A$$ Bloody Mary Bar come from? Well, we like to drink, and we like food… why not combine them together and have a party in your mouth? Do you have a lot of repeat customers every week? Our repeat customers are the backbone of the Bloody Mary bar. Without them we wouldn’t be going on four years of Bad A$$ goodness! Thank you all! Give us a rundown of some of the toppings that people can expect when they come for a Bloody Mary. There’s usually anywhere from 20-30 to choose from. But my personal favorite are the BBQ bourbon meatballs, stuffed cherry peppers, and of course the ‘Ted special’ (you have to stop in to know what that is!)

28

thebeachsideresident.com

M AY 2016

Describe for us what the best Bloody Mary, in your opinion, consists of- from type of vodka to toppings, no limits! I’m a huge fan of all the yummy infused vodkas we make. But I guess if I had to choose- right now it would be the basil and oregano vodkas with the ‘Ted special’, my house made pickled green beans, asparagus and a the garlic and jalapeño stuffed olives. And a burger on top, of course! What’s the craziest Sunday Funday experience you’ve witnessed from behind the Bad A$$ Bloody Mary Bar? It was definitely when we had the foam party! Making Bloody Mary’s while there was foam floating through the sky as far as the eye could see! Hunkerdown will be hosting one of the Superboats Grand Prix pre-parties. Can you give any hints about what to

expect? We always have really great drink specials and we all love coming up with new and fun drinks. So I’m sure the specials will be awesome and I know it’s going to be a great time! What in your opinion is the best boat drink out there? I love drinking an icy cold beer or a Captain drink when sailing the seas. Who am I kidding? I just like cocktails. Any parting words of wisdom? Eat too much, drink too much and laugh too much. Life is too short to not be happy.

Come explore all the toppings at the Bad A$$ Bloody Mary Bar, and find out for yourself what the ‘Ted Special’ really is. Hunkerdown Hideaway is located at 7 South Atlantic Avenue in Cocoa Beach.

The Bullet Dodgers The Bullet Dodgers are a band of longtime musicians who love playing reggae-funk/ ska-rock jams of their original creation as well as favorites they’ve grown up listening to. The name Bullet Dodgers came from the movie “Snatch” and is a joke between lead vocalist and guitar player, Billy Bones and the band’s original bass player. After moving to the Space Coast, Billy has realized how much he enjoys playing close to the beach. Billy is currently joined by Matt Smith (Bass/ Vocals), and Arthur John (Drums/Vocals), but they rarely turn down a friend who wants to jam along. Matt and Arthur both agree that the comradery among musicians in the community makes the Space Coast the best place to play. The band’s roots come from getting together with different musician friends and jamming. They thoroughly enjoy playing music and the fact that they get to broadcast their passion to an audience. The Bullet Dodgers have made many friends in the community and play at restaurants, bars, and venues up and down the Space Coast and beyond. Billy said during their show at Jenna’s Breezeway in Cocoa Beach, “I’ve been playing these songs since I was 15.” That rings true for him and Arthur who have both played with multiple bands and have been professional musicians for

years. Arthur has a background playing with a variety of hardcore metal bands and, as he puts it, “If a musician sleeps, I’ll take your spot.” He has played with a multitude of bands because he’d rather be playing than not, so that means he will explore whatever genre is needed for the band he is playing with - reggae, funk, punk, metal, you name it. This perfectly describes the style of The Bullet Dodgers. They love mixing different genres, and exploring the boundaries of different styles and how they work together. During their songs, each member gets a moment to show off the attributes they bring to the table. Matt started working at the 321 Local as a bartender and taught himself guitar. After Matt met Billy at their Reggae Thursdays, he joined Billy for a New Year’s Eve party gig as the bass player. That was two years ago; around the same time Arthur started playing with Billy as well, and it has stuck. “We like to tailor the setlist to what customers we’re working with,”

says Arthur while paraphrasing Billy. They play a variety of danceable covers of classic rock and ska-punk songs like Sublime, Beatles, and Alice in Chains, and do a great psychedelic-rock meets reggae cover of Grateful Dead’s “Fire on The Mountain.” The Bullet Dodgers have a slew of original songs and live performances recorded, which are all available to download for free. They have six new original songs that they are working on producing into an album with some remixes of popular live favorites to release and sell at their shows across Florida and wherever else their music takes them. They’re gearing up for the East Coast Love at the Sandbar in Cocoa Beach and are all over Florida in May. The Bullet Dodgers will be at the Caboose Bar in Orlando on May 11th, in Melbourne at The Boondocks Live on May 15th, Cocoa Beach’s Jump’s Tiny Tavern on May 21st, Palm Pub in Palm Bay on May 22nd, and Skinny’s in Hudson, FL on May 26th.

To stay up to date with where to find The Bullet Dodgers, like their Facebook page and check out their music at reverbnation.com/ thebulletdodgers. M AY 2016

Album Reviews by M.A. Rivera

The Best of Fare Thee Well Celebrating 50 years of The Grateful Dead Rhino, 2016

Disc One opens with the Phil Lesh led “Box of Rain,” and is more than a little symbolic here. “Box of Rain” was the final song the Grateful Dead performed live alongside iconic founding member, Jerry Garcia, in 1995 at Soldiers Field. In Chicago, no less. If we want to read into it, The Dead came to properly wrap up their legacy, whose end was abrupt and the last show wholly unnoteworthy, save for the footnote as Garcia’s final performance. Reformed here, there’s Trey Anastasio filling in for Jerry Garcia, and Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti, both on keyboards, rounding out the line-up. The band is by turns brilliant, sloppy, inspired and occasionally, distracted. There are a million wonderful moments that transpire during a Dead performance. It would be great if said moments of genius could be more closely consolidated in individual songs. Stand out tracks here include “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” and “Scarlet Begonias” sliding into a lively “Fire on the Mountain.” There is neither spit or polish to be found on either disc. At times these songs sound like they were captured on fan recordings for all the flaws and dropped moments found herein. They’ve never been concerned with perfection before, why start now? If you’ve never quite gotten the appeal of the meandering 13 minute ditty full of musical asides, this will not suddenly convert you. It is a very honest, very real document of a band who were never too concerned with pleasing anyone but themselves and their core fan base. A fitting conclusion to a long, strange, trip indeed. Also available in a 12 CD, seven DVD box set for purists, but they already knew that.

Monster Hole Monster Hole

Independent Release, 2016 Cocoa Beach’s own Monster Hole is serving up seriously deep grooves. Forgoing sunny themes, the band is better suited to the feel of gritty exhaust combining with salt air during Bike Week. There’s a nice combination of rock flanged with blues touches. Monster Hole is Frank O.G., vocals and bass; Ken Blackwell, lead guitar; Doug Prescott, drums; and Andy Pesce, guitar and harmonica. Slower, steady paced numbers allow the songs to breathe and find their pace. “Grind” pulses to life effortlessly, rock steady and cocksure. The riff at

30

thebeachsideresident.com

the heart of this song is out-sized and monumental. This track stands out for the vocal delivery swelling through heart of the song as well as the combustible guitar lead. “Cucamonga” lays at the middle of this disc and is the musical centerpiece. A mid tempo boogie, the band goes for broke here. Dirty, sweet guitars play off of bright rhythms and an unrelenting bass line, creating a seductive sound. This is a great number, as it leaves you wanting to hear it over and over. Frank O.G.’s vocal delivery is full of the wild yearning of a man who understands what he wants and it’s only a matter of time ‘til he gets it. “What it Is” is a tense number resigned to the cruel twists life can throw your way. Not cynical, but still not ready to be hopeful. “Strut” kicks up its heels and is ready to raise Hell. This is what the weekend sounds like. Up-tempo and adrenalized, everything here is big and overblown. A high note for the band to close the disc on. For a new band, Monster Hole has a well developed sound and sense of self. They fuse their personalities together naturally and the product is a easy on the ear; a finely distilled, 110 proof blend of rock.

Upland Stories Robbie Fulks

Blood Shot Records, 2016 There are 12 songs here, but it could just easily be 12 short stories about people living in troubled, uneasy country towns. There’s a lyrical effortlessness to Fulks’s songwriting whether he’s playfully telling us about “Aunt Peg’s New Old Man,” or the world weary “Never Come Home.” This is Americana at it’s finest. Honest and unblinkingly austere, Fulks portrays the America he sees, where homecomings are bittersweet, departures hopeful, and love is uneasy, “Hey now Katy Kay/Heaven never made one cuter/If I didn’t love my Katy Kay/I’d probably have to shoot her.” “America is a Hard Religion” is as brutally frank a description of a hardscrabble existence as there ever was. “A Miracle” is upbeat and hopeful. There’s not a lot of overly romantic descriptions of idyllic Southern life to be found here. But everyone’s doing the best they can to get by, with varying degrees of success. “Sweet as Sweet Comes” slips in here, cheerful, light and a little unexpected. Robbie Fulks serves up astute and perceptive storytelling about people overlooked by pretty much everyone. He gives voice to deep, resonant, feelings, and how hard it can sometimes be to move forward.

3 daughters BREWING Our beers. Our passion. Our story. How many beers does it take to put three daughters through college? The owners don't know the answer, but certainly hope to find out. There is meaning behind the name 3 Daughters Brewing. Founders Mike and Leigh Harting actually named the brewery for their three little girls. The concept of 3 Daughters Brewing started with Mike and Head Brewer (then Head Chef), Ty Weaver in a local restaurant in St Petersburg, Florida. They were working on a recipe for a beer battered fish and decided to make it with their own hand crafted brews. No surprise, it sold a lot of fish and fueled their passion for brewing craft beer. As the popularity of the beers grew, Mike and Ty decided to invest in a brewhouse to increase their brewing capacity for the restaurant. When they picked out a 30 barrel system, it was time to move on from the restaurant industry and start a journey in craft beer. As the brewery was being built, the common joke was, "how many beers do we have to sell to put 3 Daughters through college?". And so the shortening of the name to 3 Daughters Brewing...

Family. Beer. Community. There are a couple of cool things in the brewery that reflect our history and tell our story. When you visit the tasting room, check out a brick built into one corner of the bar that pays homage to Mike's great grandfather who also owned a brewery in Lexington Kentucky over 100 years ago. And directly opposite that brick, you can see the handprints of the 3 daughters who inspired the name. At 3 Daughters Brewing, our goal is to create great tasting craft beers. We hope you'll come to by the tasting room in St Petersburg to try one of our over 60 recipes on tap. Not near St Pete? 45th SW supports SpaceX’s CRS mission launch by 45th Space Wing Public Affairs

The 45th Space Wing supported SpaceX’s successful launch of a Falcon 9 Dragon spacecraft headed to the International Space Station from Space Launch Complex 40 here April 8 at 4:43 p.m. ET. This is the seventh major launch operation for the Eastern Range this year, and this launch is the eighth contracted mission by SpaceX under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services contract. The flight will deliver science research, crew supplies and hardware to the orbiting laboratory in support of the Expedition 47 and 48 crews. According to NASA, the flight also includes the Bigelow Aerospace expandable habitat module that will be attached to the space station for testing. In its scheduled return to Earth in May, the Dragon capsule will bring back biological samples from astronauts, including those

collected during NASA’s one-year mission. A combined team of military, government civilians and contractors from across the 45th Space Wing provided support to the mission, including weather forecasts, launch and range operations, security and safety. “I am proud of the integrated team who worked together flawlessly to make this launch a success,” said Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, 45th Space Wing commander, who served as the mission’s Launch Decision Authority. “This mission once again clearly demonstrates the successful collaboration we have with our mission partners at NASA and SpaceX as we continue to shape the future of America’s space operations and serve as the ‘World’s Premier Gateway to Space.’”

Fishing Reports The Cosmos are Smiling on Space Coast Anglers By Capt. Scott Bussen the fish you hook. A little patience will go a long way to a grouper dinner. The live bait fishing on the reefs was a bit spotty last month, but I would expect that to get a bit better in May. Usually in May, we get a shot at some big kings as they get ready to spawn. Along with the kings, there could be a shot at a blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish or cobia. The live bait has been a bit tough lately, but with some decent weather, maybe they’ll settle down in one area. People always ask me “What’s the best month to fish?” I always tell them “Why, May of course!” You can pretty much catch anything in May, so there are so many options. Whatever it is you wanna go for, go for it. Just get out there and get after ‘em. It’s not going to happen if you’re stuck doing honey do’s. See ya on the pond!

As I sit down to write this report, I’m brimming with excitement and optimism. I’m as happy as anyone else who had a chance to experience the dolphin bite in the middle of April.

ATLANTIC TIME By Capt. Jamie Glasner

Well, the fishing in April was as good as it gets. Let’s hope that will happen for us this month also! The inshore redfish bite has been on fire both in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon. Shrimp on jig heads and cut bait has been the trick on the Indian River due to the dirty water. In the Mosquito Lagoon, artificial has been fun with gulp shrimp on jig heads. The Mosquito Lagoon water clarity has started to improve, making that artificial bite awesome. We’ve been catching a few nice sized sea trout and black drum amongst the redfish in the Indian River, which makes a nice variety. Remember, we have no tide on our inshore waterways but when we have a huge

ground swell offshore it raises the water levels in all the lagoons extremely high, making the bite inshore awesome. Make sure you hit the shorelines hard as most the fish like to move in and eat where they normally couldn’t where the water was shallow. These next couple months are my favorite to fish on the ocean. The reason why is grouper season opens up May 1st, and there are so many different species to target. Heres a few to name: Tarpon, Goliath Grouper, kingfish, red snapper, amberjack, sharks, bonito, permit, cobia, barracuda, jacks, flounder, snook, and mahi mahi. So make sure to give myself or Alex a call and we’ll get you out there!

There were a couple of days when the moon and stars aligned and heaven on earth was experienced by some lucky fisherman. I happened to miss the first day, but managed to get into the action on the second day. It was honestly a thing of beauty. There was a strip of green water with Gulf Stream blue water on the inshore and offshore side with a massive current rip on the offshore side. It was pretty much what dreams are made of if you like to troll. Not only did it look right, there were dolphin seemingly everywhere along the edge. In addition to the crazy numbers of fish, they were all quality-sized fish. Average catches were in the high teens to mid-twenties with some boats catching thirty or more. I can honestly say it was one of the best bites of mahi I have ever seen. The only downer was that on the third day, the edge was gone. But, there were still a few fish around in the wide open. I’m gonna cross my fingers that the moon and stars remain aligned and this is the year our dolphin fishing makes a decided upturn. Assuming said alignment, it will just be a matter of finding the right color change, weedline, or edge. From there, some ballyhoo rigged on mono leaders should do the trick, just troll them close to your teaser. Along with

the dolphin, there should be a shot at a wahoo, sailfish or blackfin tuna. The others will be fine on mono, but if you want a shot at the hoo, put a ballyhoo/lure combo rigged on wire in the spread. This bait should be fished on the shotgun or downrigger. I have to say I’m sorry, but even as good as that mahi bite was, I’m more so looking forward to the opening of grouper on May 1. There were a few around in April, hopefully they will stick around through May. When it opens May 1, the grouper will be in as shallow 75’ on out to the cones. Take plenty of big live baits and possibly a prescription for a sedative. The patience testers will be the red snapper eating all your bait and the sandbar sharks that will eat

Boardrider ofthe Month by Jenny Bilchak

Stu Sharpe This month the magazine is reflecting on water. When you think about it, most of us are here because of the water. Our community depends on the tourists visiting our shores and boating in our rivers. Our residents and transplants live by motto’s like “Salt Life” and “Just Add Water.” Even I moved to the area for the relief from being landlocked, searching for water to soothe my soul. I’m pleased to say that this month’s Boardrider Stu Sharpe has been able to give the love of water to many others. Stu has been shaping boards with Island Surfboards at Ocean Sports World for 27 years, and at Town and Country Surfboards for 20 years creating waveskis, surfboards, paddle boards and so on. Stu also has his own business, a brand familiar to many of us as Sharpe Surfboards. I got a chance to catch up with Stu and hear a little more about his story. “I was born in New York and moved to Florida when I was around three years old,” he started out. “My parents were splitting up a bunch so we went back-and-forth from here to New York and Delaware but settled in Florida, thank God!” I asked Stu how he fell upon the surf scene and when he started shaping. “When I was about nine years old, I met a guy name Robin Williams who lived by the Canaveral Pier. He got me into surfing,” he told me. “His brother and friends (the Leon Lane crew) were building their own surfboards, which was really cool. So I was exposed to that at an early age.” The stoke obviously never died out. I really wanted to know how he knew shaping boards was for him.

34

thebeachsideresident.com

M AY 2016

“My father raced cars when I was a kid, so I had the same interest in cars and motorcycles. Originally, I wanted to design cars and race motorcycles but I developed a passion for surfing being in Florida,” he explained. “I then developed an interest and desire to build surfboards from my friend Jeff Haney. He was the one who told me about an opening for a polisher. I BS’d my way in and said I knew what I was doing, when I clearly didn’t. But I guess my passion and desire kept my job. While working with Bill Eberwein and Steve Holloway of Lightwave, Mike Tabeling’s factory, and Doug Wright’s Rainbow Surfboards, I learned a lot. I became obsessed with the craft and that was it!” Stu has been creating boards for water lovers for some time and I wanted to know what are some of his proudest moments for himself and his boards. “One of my proudest memories was when I first learned how to surf, turn and actually not fall off.” It’s obvious that love has followed him for many

years and escalated his career. “I really enjoy designing rockers, making blanks and being creative. It’s pretty cool making boards and wave riding crafts of all types that work. I’m able to stoke surfers on my boards. That is very rewarding!” Hearing Stu’s passion is exhilarating. It’s great to see people happy with their life and what they do. So many of us are not. It was my pleasure to hear a little more about Stu Sharpe’s story. He was one of the first people I met in our small beach town and I’ve been happy to call him a friend of mine ever since. As always, we’re going to pass some advice to the groms and really, to all. Because it’s the water

issue, please remember to be conscious of how we use it. The struggle to keep our water clean and provide fresh water to people and animals in this world is real. In the very realistic words of Edward O. Wilson, “People would rather believe than know.” See you in the water everyone.

On the Shoulders of

G IANTS By Scooter Newell • sk8scooter@gmail.com www.cocoabeachskatepark.com

For the last 30 years of my life, I have had the privilege of learning from one of skateboarding’s most iconic figures, Bruce Walker. Bruce has often been sighted riding his skateboard, performing flat-land routines between Coconuts and the Beach Shack, usually at sunset time. In the 1980s I used to watch the Walker Skateboard Team at contests, demos and even in the streets near 1st St North and Woodland where the Walker Skateboard Factory was located (currently being occupied by Twin Style Hair Salon). Anyway, I would skate to the factory and wait for Jim McCall, Bruce Walker and sometimes even Reggie Barnes to come out on a “skate break.” They were masters of flat-land skateboarding. They’d watch each other take turns putting routines down on the asphalt. 360’s, space walks, nose wheelies, handstands, kick flips, old tricks, new tricks, they did it all. Looking back today, I am not sure I ever realized how important those sessions were for me to witness. If California had the industry, magazines, scenes and pros, then 1st and Woodland had it for Florida. That intersection was the mecca for a number of years. The factory was also a distributor that carried all the brands. Lots of Walker team pros and amateurs would come to our little section of skateboarding culture and skate the flat and “curb cuts”

near the storage units. Both Jim and Bruce helped to pioneer the modern skateboard movement and invented numerous tricks. Most notably, McCall with the first “Frontside Air” on a ramp or pool, and Bruce, along with many other accolades is credited with being the first skateboarding distribution businessman in North America. Bruce also had constructed the earliest “curved” skateboard ramp. Bruce is a Skateboarding Hall of Fame member and a Surfing Hall of Fame member. Standing about 6’4” and with a physical resemblance to a classic physically fit Batman or Superman character, Bruce is impossible to miss at the skate or surf session. Bruce rides a non-traditional skateboard that is 42” long and is special made with eight plys of maple instead of the standard ply. He has ridden a long skateboard since I have known him. Classic photos of Bruce in pools on conventional short boards proves his ability to ride anything and any type of board on any type of terrain. Bruce offered guidance during my early

competitive years. He would explain to me how urgent it was to skate the entire course, emphasizing the importance of style, speed, continuity, difficult tricks and variety. I understand now that this was one of the most important conversations I had as a young skater. I was not even on the Walker team, yet I had the guy who coached Jim McCall, Rodney Mullen, Sean Slater, Reggie Barnes, Kelly Slater and Chuck Dinkins helping me with my contest runs and strategy. It was not like we spent hours reviewing footage or techniques, just constant conversations about how to do better in contests. I was a contest skater. I lived for contests. We would travel all over the state for any competition. Often I found myself hitching ride to contests in the legendary “Walker Van”. I was hungry and wanted to be on the Walker team like nothing else. Bruce would see me win contests, place in the top three, and even get last place sometimes. He always was honest and supportive. Again, mind boggling that he even gave me the time of day since I was not on his team.

As time went on Mark Lake, one of Bruce’s most influential pros was starting his own brand, Lake Skateboards. I would join the Lake team in 1988 but not before knocking on Bruce Walker’s office door to ask for his advice. For the last two years I had been riding Walker boards that I got at a discounted “B-Team” rate, so naturally I felt like I owed Bruce a conversation due to the drastic levels of loyalty I had for Walker Skateboards. Bruce told me (again) that with him, Chuck Dinkins and Jim McCall all in CB and Melbourne that he really would be oversaturated, geographically, by adding me. I totally understood and he was right. If I lived in middle-America I would have had a way better chance perhaps. He went on to say that Mark had a cool, edgy thing going and I would fit in well with that team. I actually did want to join Lake since it was a new Florida brand with the strength and history of Mark Lake. I still ride Lake Boards today, 28 years later. Mark Lake actually got to watch me win Continues on Page 40 a contest in

Have You Used the BlueTube at your Beach Yet? BlueTube makes it simple for people to keep beaches clean and keep plastic out of the ocean. They are bright blue containers at dune crossovers that are filled with clean, used plastic bags. Next time you head to the beach, grab a bag, pick up trash and throw it away. Donate your used bags to the BlueTube, and the cycle continues. Some of our beach trash is fresh, probably left by careless visitors, but most washes ashore from far off places. The next time we get Sargassum seaweed on our beaches, look for bottle caps, plastic forks and a lot of weathered pieces of plastic mixed in. More and more of our trash is plastic, and this doesn’t decompose like organic trash. It lasts. That weathered plastic on our beach could be part of a bleach jug that washed out to sea in the Caribbean years ago, was carried by currents, fragmented into small pieces and came ashore here. The good news is that plastic is much easier to remove from the beach, especially with a bag and a gentle reminder from a BlueTube. With many people picking up a little trash up and down the coast all the time, we will keep our beaches beautiful and put a dent in ocean plastic. So far there are BlueTubes at sixty dune crossovers. Most of these are at beaches in Brevard. BlueTubes are funded through sponsorships, and a portion of sponsor money goes towards scientific research on ocean plastic. Questions? Comments? Mercury in retrograde in your first house is not the best energy because you are more likely to rush things, get into accidents or just be forgetful. Love relationships are difficult or complicated with this energy. You need to own your part in a fight or an argument this month. Everything that happens now is temporary, so things will go back to normal after the 22nd.

Resident of the Month Muck is an important removal that requires big dredges. The dredge head hydraulically brings muck off the bottom and it’s forced through a pipe that runs a half a mile and spills it out into a spoil site. “They’re hoping to take that super high nutrient muck out of the system. We’re pretty sure that it’s that muck is fueling some of these blooms.” There are projects that are categorized in ranges of big regional scale to smaller projects. Muck removal is considered a big scale project. “We have large stormwater conveyances like Turkey Creek, and all the watershed that drains into Turkey Creek. That can be a large project or multiple small projects.

THE COST OF IGNORING THE PROBLEM There’s a popular saying, “When you point a finger, there are three fingers pointing back to you.” It’s a gentle reminder that when you point out someone’s mistakes remember you’re also highlighting your own. It’s time residents and lawmakers decide what’s important. Daily activities and choices made by millions can make or break this delicate ecosystem. The choice is ours.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Dir: Zack Snyder

Stars: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Jesse Eisenberg After his battle with Zod causes mass destruction in Metropolis, Superman’s (Cavill) presence is questioned by the government while Bruce Wayne (Affleck) sees him as a threat to the human race. Zack Snyder’s directing mirrors the hype surrounding the matchup of DC’s biggest heroesthe potential is great but the end result is a bit disappointing. Unless Snyder references a plot from source material, he isn’t a great storyteller. Relying on his casual use of faded colors and dark tones with religious/philosophical themes hammered in, he creates a movie that looks good but has no substance. The story doesn’t flow but rather jumps around between subplots without tying them together until the second half. Cavill is fine donning the cape once again but is outshined by Affleck who really makes the aged Batman his own. Eisenberg gives Lex Luthor an interesting yet questionable personality whereas Gal Gadot surprises in both look and portrayal as Wonder Woman. As expected from Snyder, the action is well directed from the Batman fight scenes to the Superman- level destruction. Though “BvS” takes place during/directly after “Man of Steel,” it isn’t exactly a sequel but acts more like a Batman movie

as it deals with Bruce Wayne’s perception of Superman. Even with a late start, DC has caught up to Marvel and did so in one movie (something that took them eight years to accomplish) introducing characters and setting up a shared comic book universe. Grade: B

The Boss

Dir: Ben Falcone

Stars: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell, Peter Dinklage

tries to reinvent herself by becoming the leader of a Girl Scout troop. McCarthy can be hilarious, creating memorable scenes when she goes off script unfiltered delivering ad-libbed lines. Like comedians with a shtick (i.e. Kevin Hart), when audiences are given them in small doses they’re a hit. But when obligated to carry a movie, they can become tiresome. It’s as if McCarthy’s billionaire character is taken from a Saturday Night Live sketch- she’s not very complicated and just one note. Her character doesn’t arc and her personality doesn’t change after all the wealth and power. Bell saves the movie as Darnell’s assistant and single mom. Kudos to Dinklage, who bravely plays the film’s samurai-inspired antagonist. What should’ve been “Troop Beverly Hills” meets the humbling story of a riches-to-rags story, just turns out to be a vehicle for a McCarthy-invented character. It’s nice that the film was made by the husband and wife team of Falcone/McCarthy but just like last year’s “Tammy,” not all comedic collaborations are funny. Grade: C-

Hardcore Henry Dir: Ilya Naishuller

Stars: Sharlto Copley, Haley Bennett, Danila Kozlovsky Henry is half man, half cyborg. After Henry is awakened by his wife (Bennett), she is kidnapped and he must find her. Henry’s story is told completely in the first-person format. Audiences are taken on a non-stop action thrill ride that’s “Crank” meets Doom. The viewer assumes the identity of Henry and takes part in all the running, shooting and parkour stunts he performs. A total of 15 stunt people play the role. The film’s focus is purely on the first person gimmick but the story isn’t without attempts at emotional drive and logic. Copley appears throughout the film channeling Eddie Murphy as he plays multiple characters with different personalities. At a point, the movie drifts away from fluid storytelling and changes scenery hastily as environments act as various video game levels. The movie starts out fun and fast paced making you feel like you are Henry but eventually it becomes stale and feels as if you are just watching a first-person video game on autopilot. Grade: B

Inquire of Juliet By Juliet Pomodoro

Dear Juliet, I am in love with a star! A while back, my boyfriend took me to see a certain flick for certain chicks starring certain gorgeous men who love to take their clothes off ! He and I even made a whole evening out of going to see the sequel. Ever since then, I can’t get the leading man out of my mind! My boyfriend is starting to make comments about my “other man.” What should I do?

Enamored in Palm Bay Dear Enamored, Sounds like your boyfriend’s plan to pamper you backfired! It’s easy to project perfection on a celluloid projection. But you have a living, breathing honey who wants you to have fun! Pay attention to him for a change! Love, Juliet

Dear Juliet,

I am in a band with five other people. We all made a pact not to date within the group, lest some Fleetwood Mac type issues become a problem. Well, long story short, I’ve started secretly sleeping with the drummer. She’s worried someone will find out, and we’ll be busted. But I want to tell the world! Who’s right? No More Secrets in Melbourne

Dear Secrets, You don’t strike me as a person of your word. First, you make an agreement you won’t stick to, now here you are completely dissing your undercover lover’s blatant boundaries. I think a rock band is perfect for you, because in this scene, you’ll never have to grow up. You’re going to have to make a real choice: pleasure or professionality? Good luck! Juliet

Dear Juliet,

modern dater’s best ally: the Internet! I bet you can find a dating site that will cater to your specific needs. There are sites for all kinds! This way, you can comb through profiles, and get to know your potential dates at least on a cursory level before you step out on the town with them… if you are indeed allowed to step out...

Hesitant in Cocoa

Happy dating!

I was born with some irregularly formed body parts. They are in a very personal area, so nobody will know unless we are intimate. I started dating a guy a few months ago, and he’s ready to get randy together, but I’m afraid I’ll scare him away when the clothes come off. How do I get through the first time with my new beau? Dear Hesitant, It must be scary to make yourself vulnerable when you don’t know how someone will react. My suggestion is to tell your boy verbally first and see what he says. Any man worth his salt will not be phased. If he makes you feel like less than perfection, hit the door running! The right man will be accepting of all of you. So much love, Juliet

Dear Juliet,

I am from an extremely conservative religious background. Some people have even referred to my religion as a “cult!” I don’t really practice anymore, but I’m still close with my family, and want to date a girl who will be tolerant of them. What’s an observant guy to do?

No Cult Here in Cocoa Beach Dear No Cult, Let me introduce you to the

Juliet

Dear Juliet,

I have a kink so weird it’s not even on the Internet! It has taken me years to figure out exactly what it was the really rocked my socks, and now that I know, I can’t find anyone else who agrees. I thought the web was endlessly supplied with kink! How do I find my people?

Lonely Kinker in Indialantic Dear Lonely, You find your people by putting out a beacon! My guess is that you are not alone. There are over seven billion people on the planet right now. I bet at least a few of them share your unique kink. How are you at coding? If you build it (a website or portal) they will come! Good luck! Juliet
