BOOK REVIEWS By Gary Roen

A Salute To Our Veterans Vignettes of the “CAN DO” Seabees 1942- 2007 Irene J. Dumas 9781425136109, $15.50 “A Salute To Our Veterans” deals with many different wars our veteran Seabees have been a part of, beginning with W.W. II. Many of the stories are told by the veteran himself about their time in the military and if relevant, actual combat experience. Others are told by the author who reveals a lot about the people who make the world a safer place to live. The Seabee volume of “A Salute To Our Veterans” is a wonderful tribute to the many men who get very little recognition for what many take for granted.

A New Conversation With Men Coach Michael Taylor 9780964189423, $15.99 Michael Taylor dispels the myth of the Macho Male and the implications that have surrounded the idea for a long time. Instead, he says there is a much healthier way to achieve a better professional and personal life, in “A New Conversation With Men.” Taylor analyzed his mistakes that caused him to look deeper into himself and seek help to change to be a better person. He has taken the knowledge from his quest to teach others to a better pathway to a calmer existence. “A New Conversation With Men” is a groundbreaking approach to teach men how to get along in this changing world of ours.

The Victim Max Manning 9781492667018, $15.99 “The Victim” begins with a simple situation of a woman stopping in a parking lot - we do not know, at the time, why she has put herself there. The uniqueness of the situation opens a novel that will hook readers from the first page with a deliciously sinister plot that moves along at a very fast pace. “The Victim” is a rapid-fire, page-turner thrill ride that is bound to please anyone who is looking for an enticing journey of suspense

I would completely destroy every trace and ensure incredible human beings like my dad could be with us for full healthy lives. F&$k cancer!

Bird King: The 80's. '88 to be exact. Best time for music and culture. Some really good childhood memories of that time skateboarding and surfing. Punk rock changed my life and that's about the time it started for me. I miss the 80's.

Afton Johnson: Ancient Greece to see how the Greeks built things/the art that was created/all the innovations taking place.

Jamie Dunwell: For a relaxing afternoon, I’d teleport to Indian Harbor Beach (1k yards south of Lou’s Blues, just North of Paradise Park) and let the sound of crashing waves lull me into a sunny nap. Then, I’d swing by DaKine Diego’s Insane Burritos for spicy carrots and a pork bowl with all the fixin’s, and a cold Corona Lite.

Sydney Kroeck: I would teleport my Mother here to take her to the beach. I rented the Beach Wheelchair from SBFD and took her for a stroll on the beach every morning. She wants to come back for a visit. She is now 92.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

RISING TIDE TAP &TABLE Written by Misti Blue Day McDermott

Rising Tide Tap & Table is located in Port Canaveral, with a view of the Port’s Exploration Tower and the passing cruise ships. They are open 7-days a week for lunch and dinner service, opening at 11am. The barbacoa spiced shrimp with pickled red onion, avocado crème and micro cilantro was so fresh and savory that I ate every morsel. Then, I came back a couple days later to order it AGAIN! I have already convinced my husband to take me here for date nights and sold the ladies on a girl’s date soon. This place is a hit and it’s clear to me why they are Restaurant of The Month. Their deeply rooted passion for all things beer and food comes from co-owners Rich and Gary’s extensive restaurateur background. Gary is from Colorado, commuting from the Rockies to the beach. His go-to dish is the house-cut seared Mahi tacos with Risin’ spice, pickled green tomato, chili key lime ranch, sea beans and micro cilantro. Rich prefers the Apple Scratch Fried Chicken and everyone’s favorite appetizer is the Sun Kissed Spin Dip. Rich is a retired Coast Guard chief and also owns Fishlips in the Port. The two own the sister restaurant Junkanoo Island Kitchen and Rum Bar, with a restaurant group. These guys know what they are doing and they do it well. October is coming up on two years since Rising Tide opened their doors, offering affordable scratch comfort eats, like pizza, burgers, 14

and tacos. Chef Kainz created a mouthwatering menu inspired by local and fresh ingredients. “Life is sobering and food is intoxicating,” says Kainz. He rides to work on his motorcycle, taking in the warm Florida breeze and salty sunshine. Everything on the menu is fresh, never frozen, and with quality ingredients without hormones and steroids. Kainz went to the Culinary Institute of America, the same place Anthony Bourdain attended. There are 60 beers on tap, with plenty of local favorites such as Intracoastal Brewing Company. Florida brewers are growing leaps and bounds and it’s Rising Tide’s focus to help the local beer companies to get the exposure they deserve. Even behind the bar, Bobby (manager and chief mixologist) uses fresh ingredients for their frozen

drinks and freshly squeezed juice. “Made from scratch is not a catch phrase, it’s a standard for us,” Gary and Rich explain. The staff is well trained and knowledgeable on the menu; Gary says, “our servers are like tour guides, helping customers to make the right pairings.” The bar top has pieces of metal from the shuttles mixed in and there are dust panels from the shuttles created into light fixtures. The restaurant has such a fun décor; there is a barrel room that seats 50 people and has a real barrel for the ceiling. It’s no wonder that Bill Nye, NFL players, astronauts, senators, and of course locals, have come in to eat. Keep an eye out for the freshly launched new menu, food and beer pairings, and keep them in mind for your catering needs as well.

Corporal Fursey’s Airborne Ranger Ribs Remove membrane from ribs by loosening with butter knife and peeling off by gripping with a paper towel. Dry ribs with paper towel on both sides. Shake kosher salt on ribs. Paint ribs with spicy brown mustard. Rub ribs with rub on both sides. Place ribs in smoker or on charcoal grill away from flame and close/crack lid and keep temperature at about 225 degrees for 3 hours. Using a squirt bottle filled with water or apple juice, spray ribs every hour to keep moist. Currently I am using “Candy Apple Shine” by Sauces and Such for this step. After 3 hours wrap ribs in aluminum foil, crimp edges, and place back on indirect heat for 2 more hours. At this stage some people wrappin After squirt butter and/or honey on top of ribs before wrapping. 2 hours wrapped, take top of foil off but leave bottom. Paint with BBQ Sauce and leave on indirect heat one more hour. 6 hours total cook…3-2-1. Bones will pull out. I remove every other bone and cut so each rib is 3 ribs with a central handle. Note: I roast my own peppers by putting fresh peppers on the cool side of the grill when I am done grilling for the day, and closing the lid. The next day you have charred peppers that easily grind into a powder. I like to mix several varieties of peppers like Carolina Reapers, Trinidad Scorpions, Ghost, etc. I also mix these into other rubs to bump them up a notch.

NEVER FORGET:

Brevard Remembers 9/11with a new Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Center Almost 18 years ago, almost 3000 Americans died in terrorists attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Arlington VA in less than three hours. On this upcoming anniversary of those attacks local rst responders and veterans will gather at then Veterans Memorial Center behind Merritt Square Mall for a Remembrance Ceremony open to all to reeect on that day and the years since, when America changed. Now many say we are ghting our longest war in history, almost 7,400 more American men and women have died in direct military combat and mo as a result of military service. In addition many dozens have thousands more passed away after being exposed to toxic chemicals during the months of clean up. We should not forget. Last month there were almost no high school students and younger who went back to school in Brevard County and the Space Coast who were alive on September 9, 2001. On that day thousands of American High Schoolers and above made the choice to enter the ght as the towers came down and today many in pre-school on that date are also in the ongoing ght. It is said Americans have a short retention span since we lead such busy lives. The organizers of the Ceremony to Remember this year are determined to try to impa that statistic. impact The 1013 Club of retired NYPD officers, the BCSO, Fireeghters from NYC and locally and the Veterans Memorial Center’s team of military veterans are joining forces this year in an effort to create something special. Last year among others, two ceremonies were held in Brevard. In the morning on 9/11/2018 the VMC held its rst Patriots Day Ceremony with over 200 hundred attending. That late afternoon, the 1013 Club led a Remembrance at the Avenues of Viera where a 9/11 monument had been built, with over 500 attending. Combining forces at the VMC with its 6000 sq feet museum, plaza that includes a monument to 9/11, 82 acre park and plenty of free parking at the MI Mall seems to be a great idea and t. In case you are wondering, the 1013 Club chose its name from the NYC radio call "1013” which means “Officer needs Assistance”. That day in 2001, thousands ran toward danger and into the re to assist. The 2019 Brevard County Memorial Tribute Ceremony begins at 5:45 pm at the VMC and will include a very special program, music, speakers and units to help us recall the impact of 9/11, learn perhaps something new from eyewitnesses who will brieey describe the scenes they lived through and perhaps to help remind those young Americans under 18 why that Date and Patriots Day is on most Calendars. Retired NYPD Detective Al Boettjer will be the Master of Ceremonies and Sheriff Wayne Ivey will lead a group of speakers who were in NY , at the Pentagon, and at FAA Headquarters on 9/11/2001 as well as one NYC who stayed in the Army as a result of 9/11 and fought several combat tours in SW Asia. Please consider joining the Remembrance and sharing some time to see museum and plaza artifacts from 9/11. Please contact the Veterans Memorial Center on 321-453-1776 for more information.

MONEYTALK

Lorem Ipsum

“I was born with nothing and I still have most of it left.” Option players are similar to compulsive gamblers. With varying degrees of experience, most will walk away with less than they started with. There are ways to use options in a positive manner, but we’ll save that for now and start with the destructive side because it’s more fun. Let’s start with some basic terms. As usual, I’ll save the more in-depth stuff for the web site. Options are contracts that rise and fall in value based on the value of an underlying asset. There are two types of options: calls and puts. Every option has an expiration date. Calls are a contract to buy, meaning if you have one call option to buy XYZ stock, you have the right to buy XYZ at a specific price until some future date. So imagine you spent a couple hundred dollars and bought this contract that guarantees you can buy 100 shares of XYZ for $25. Later that day, XYZ announces a new product will make them tons of money. The great news drives their stock price from $25 per share to $50. The stock doubled in price but the call option you bought for $200 is now worth $2500. Giddyup. Put options are a contract to sell and perform the opposite of calls. The value of a put will go up if the underlying stock goes down. It’s like skating on the other side of the ice. The appeal of options is obvious. Investment loss is limited to the original cost, in this case $200. Potential gain is enormous as illustrated. But alas, there’s a hook. Options are priced to fail. If this is doesn’t scare you away, read it again until it does. The most likely outcome is the stock will wiggle around and go nowhere and the option expires worthless. Maybe you’re out $200. Maybe you bought 10 contracts and you’re out $2000. Either way, it’s a 100% loss. Don’t buy options. Calls or Puts. Send questions and comments to: spacecoastmoneytalk@gmail.com.

PETS IN THE CLASSROOM by the Brevard Humane Society As the new school year gets underway, the Brevard Humane Society is encouraging educators to consider adopting a classroom pet as the reward for both teachers and students can be truly amazing. Small animals, such as hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils and rats, as well as rabbits or fresh water sh, are ideal creative additions to standard curriculums across multiple disciplines. While classroom pets have long been seen as a way to support teaching efforts and to aid students in learning, research today shows the true impact that animals can have on children in a classroom setting. Studies show that kids will come to school with a new passion for learning, improved attendance, engagement, valuable social sskills, less stress/anxiety, and reduced severity of ADHD symptoms. In addition, classroom pets also provide a number of new teaching opportunities for educators. Whether it’s Math (how much does a mouse weigh?), Science (can a rabbit see color?), or History (Where do guinea pigs come from?) students will approach learning STEM subjects with a new app sense of enthusiasm and interest.

Unfortunately, while many teachers have either brought pets into the classroom or arranged animal visits, not as many schools have formal programs or have very limited resources in which to support it. The Brevard Humane Society is therefore proud to work with Pet Supermarket to help promote “Pets in the Classroom” an educational grant program that provides educ nancial support to teachers who wish to purchase and maintain small animals in their kindergarten through ninth grade classrooms. As a teacher, you can obtain a grant for the purchase of a new pet, pet environments and pet food as well as supplies for existing classroom pets. class In the end, there are undoubtedly plenty of perks, but at the end of the day the importance of creating a bond between animals and children is something that students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. To apply for a grant or for more information, please visit: https://www.petsupermarket.com/pets-in-the-classroom and to search for adoptable classroom pets, please visit: https://brevardhumanesociety.org/other-pets/

PET OF THE MONTH Cocoa Village Riverfront park is a popular spot but how many of us can say we found our best friend there? Arugula the spicy chihuahua sure can. Arugula met her future mom at the “Space Coast Veg Fest” at the Cocoa Riverfront Park. Arugula was brought to the park that day in hopes of pairing her with a new family. The Brevard Humane Society works endlessly to unite animals with their forever homes. Working within the community and setting up at local events like the Space Coast Vegetarian Festival, not only spreads awareness about adoptable pets, but it also allows them to bring these furry friends directly on location in hopes of them leaving with a loving owner. After a proper meet and greet with the future family, along with the other household animals, everyone knew Arugula was meant to be part of their tribe. Two years later, Arugula is happily living beachside with her three brothers: two Dalmatians and another rescue chihuahua. While she is still not a fan of walking on a leash, Arugula loves visit Lori Wilson dog park to run around and play with other four legged friends. She is adventurous and loves to frolic outdoors while dragging sticks and berries inside. If you are looking to add another furry friend to the family, visit the local Humane Society to see who may need a home!

FISHING INSHORE REPORT

OFFSHORE REPORT

CAPTAIN ALEX HUGHEY

CAPTAIN GREG RAPP

Near shore fishing will remain solid this month with lots of variety just outside of Port Canaveral. The snook bite will be epic with the abundance of bait still around for those fishing. The tide changes when they fall early in the morning or evening, and if you catch one in the slot they open back up for harvest so snook is back on the menu. Triple tail will be readily available for those willing to be the first to work the channel buoys, along with any other flotsam to be found. Use handpicked, live shrimp or small white baits such as pilchards for the best results. Big red drum, sharks and goliath grouper will be available for those who want to kick back on anchor and soak large cut baits such as bonito, king mackerel or anything large and smelly.

All the favorites will be available for those wanting fast action by fishing small rigs. The sliding sinker rig with 15lb test braid with 20lb top shot mono and 12lb test fluorocarbon leader with a 1/2 oz sinker and #2 kale hook. Small live shrimp, clams and sand fleas will be the baits of choice for whiting, sheepshead, black drum, & mangrove snapper. September is a great month for Near shore fishing just be cautious of fishing tight to structure if we have any large swells from any major storms out in the Atlantic.

When it comes to offshore fishing along the Space Coast you have to love and hate getting into September. September is a transition month, and with August still holding calm, seas we will officially now have to say good bye to summer. September never fails to shake things up with tropical storm conditions somewhere that will send in big swells. The water clarity gets poor and fishing gets hard. That doesn’t mean chalk it up and don’t go fishing, it just means you will need to select your days a little better. Calm days immediately after large swells or tropical storm conditions can provide some really great fishing op-

portunities in the form of color changes. These color changes are typically formed by cleaner moving water next to dirty still water. When this happens inside of 100ft you will have opportunities abound for some of our favorite fish such as cobia and tripletail. When this happens further offshore it is typically the Gulf Stream and that hard change will provide opportunities at dolphin fish, sailfish, black fin tuna and wahoo. The bottom fishing for amberjack & grouper can also benefit from this. These fish have been on easy street for four months with clean water and abundant bait to feed upon, so they haven’t been hitting baits that have

hooks all that well. They don’t know what to do but hide when the clarity gets bad and they can’t hunt. Once the water cleans up they will be on the feed, because they are accustomed to having full bellies for the last four months, and this window of time is when bottom fisherman capitalize. Select your days carefully and wait for a three or four day calm window after the seas get big and you will be rewarded.

This is such a time to be alive! The Silicon Valley of rocket science exists here in our backyard, the Space Coast. Nestled in Cocoa, Florida, Rocket Crafters is an aerospace growth company that is revolutionizing space access. They are next door to neighbors SpaceX but they are taking on a different side of aerospace than the other companies. It’s pretty neat to know that we have such exciting things cooking up in Brevard County. Rocket Crafters have developed and patented a hybridrocket engine, which they have tested there at the location. What’s interesting is that other companies are not able to test at their location. The reason why Rocket Crafters can test their rocket engines is 22

because…. They are not toxic to the environment! Nitrogen and oxygen are already in our environment, making it eco friendly and safe.

The first time I heard this guy I thought I was listening to someone else, and I said to myself “man this guy has gotten really good!” only to realize it was a whole new guy. Nathan Pope has guitar skills that any 50 year-old would be proud of, so if he keeps on his current path and trajectory there is no telling how far this guitar-slaying ripper will go. The CD is a tight little disc from start to finish, opening up with a blistering “I’ve Tried” which has a fast beat and nice guitar riffs. He slows it down on track 2 with “I’m Not Alone” and expresses his feelings that something bigger than all of us is driving the goings on of the world. “Crossroads” starts out with a slow electric guitar version of Amazing Grace but then kicks into the traditional song Blues fans know so well, and Nathan gives it his own personal take and does a fine job. A great CD from start to finish, keep your eye on this young man because he has nowhere to go but the top. Nathanpopemusic.com

Blues Legend Mojo Collins adds another solid release to his repertoire of roughly 30 full-length releases and 300 original songs to his name. This cat has been turning ‘em out since the year I was born and hasn’t stopped pumping in over 50 years. Mojo has worked with some of the best, including Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, Grateful Dead, Ike & Tina Turner, Muddy Waters, Leon Redbone, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and many, many more. Just like Mojo’s opening cut, you will have a “New Gladitude” after listening to this multi-award-winning performer. My favorite song is “Raynor Shine” which he wrote for his grandson Bo Raynor who is one hot rippah mon and on his way to some major surfing stardom and ranking Number 4 on the WSL Junior tour. Mojo is all about the “Laissez les bons temps rouler” and you will be too after listening to this powerful display of Blues mastery. So let the good times roll and rock this fresh disc as you roll through great jams like “Blue Carolina Day”, “Mr. Reflection”, and “Living in the Spirit”. As a man, you will appreciate Mojo’s dedication to preserving our coastline and our landmarks. As a musician, you will appreciate his preservation of the Blues. Keep up the good work Mojo. Go out and get this CD as a treat to yourself and a great addition to your collection. mojocollins@mindspring.com

RORY BLOCK A WOMAN’S SOUL: A TRIBUTE TO BESSIE SMITH This is one of those CDs that took me a few times to get the hang of. The more I got to listen, the more I liked the CD and the artist. Rory has been putting out CDs for almost 40 years, and began playing “Old Time” music as a young teen. Many years of touring, playing, and racking up awards and this lady is still blazing a path. This release of covers of one of The Blues’ Female Pioneers has many high spots as Rory takes her picking style and combines them with Bessie’s risqué double-entendre lyrics and the result is an above average CD with many great cuts. Classic Bessie jams like “Do Your Duty”, “Kitchen Man”, and “Gimme a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer” do justice to “The Empress of The Blues” as these classics from the 20’s and 30’s are given a modernday twangy twist as Block puts her signature spin on these jams to make each and every one her own. If you are a lover of Women In Blues then this is one CD you have to add to your collection as this 5 time Blues Music Award Winner delivers. The good news is this is Rory’s 1st in a series of her “Power Women of The Blues” tribute series. Keep your eyes open for the next release! Stonyplainrecords.com

CALYPSO VINYL FLASHBACK JOHN L. NICHOLS HERE IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS One of my most prized possessions, this vinyl here ranks in my top 10 of all-time, and I am sure that you have never heard of him. I scored this gem at a garage sale for a dollar about 15 years ago. I thought the cover was cool, and figured it might be reggae. Boy was I wrong. The self-proclaimed “World’s Greatest Calypsonian-Composer”, John L. Nichols died before I got a chance to meet him. I went all over St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix, etc. and no one ever even heard of the guy. Their loss. This LP boasts some of my favorite songs, and they all tell stories. “Washer Woman” was my first favorite as he sings of a woman who hand washes clothes all day, breaking her back in the hot sun. At the end of the song you discover the woman is actually his mother. “Green Christmas” is a great song that proclaims Santa came to the VI in a donkey cart, sweating and fretting with water in his eye. John L proclaims he doesn’t want a White Christmas with plenty of snow; he wants a Green Christmas with Steel Band and Calypso! Now that’s what I’m talking about! Llevame a San Tomas is the tale of a woman wanting to get away from it all and escape to a Caribbean paradise. Count me in! Every song on this LP is good with great horns, drums, and lyrics. This release led me to seek out other John L. releases like “Stay Up!” and “Press On” which are much more politically charged. This release, however, is all about fun, dancing, and the opposite sex. A great song, “Enjoy the Sea”, tells of how he met a girl, did the deed, fell asleep, and woke up to find all of his stuff stolen. Another, “Cutie”, tells of a girl who had 12 guys paying child support for one baby when in fact the baby was John L.’s and he wasn’t paying anything. Funny songs from a great performer who unfortunately I would later find out died in 1980 so my plans of finding him were all in vain. A very rare release you will have a hard time finding, but Green Christmas is on YouTube so look for it. Virtu Records, a division of John L Enterprises, is now defunct and no further information is available.
