President’s Message lans’k

‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is being celebrated by Indiansallovertheworld.

Our members actively participated in various programmes organised by Government of India on this occasion. The National Headquarters designed a large number of activities to celebrate 75 Years of our Independence with active participation of young people. I am glad to learn that the National Level Rover/Ranger Carnival to celebrate ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ held at Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh with the blessings of Shri Jai Ram Thakur, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh & President, Himachal Pradesh State Bharat Scouts and Guides attracted the attention of the world as H.H. DALAI LAMA gave audience and accepted the scarf that represents the worldwide peace initiatives by Scout/GuideMovement.

The local newspapers lauded the action by young people who showcased cultural diversity of our country and recalling the sacrifice of our freedom fighters.

We are hearing reports of flood in various parts of our country especially in Assam. We all need to standbytheaffectedbymakingcontributionstothe reliefactivities.

Scout movement is 115 years old. It was on August 1 in 1907, the first scout camp was completed on Brownsea Island. To commemorate this day, World Scarf Day was started. Most of our members recognise ‘Scarf’ as a very strong symbol of Scout PromiseandtheScout`sMissiontoleavetheworld abetterplace.Onthisday, itistraditionthatscouts all over the world wear the scarf in public to make the spirit of scouting visible. Once a scout is always ascoutisourfaith.

The ‘Sustainable Developmental Goals’ can be reachedtoallthebeneficiariesprovidedtheaction isfocussedonallagesofpeople.Theyoungandthe old persons are to be satisfied with their needs to leave no one behind. 12th August is the International Youth Day and this year we work on the theme `Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a worldforAllAges`.Wehavetocreateawarenesson unemployment, poverty, hunger, health, ageism etc. which create barriers to intergenerational solidarity. Our Scouts and Guides, Rovers and Rangers should participate in awareness programmes of SDGs, educate our next generation for a better living and participate in social work. fighters. For celebrating 76th Independence Day, let us organise programmes to pay homage to our great freedom fighters who had sacrificed their lives for the sake of our country and draw inspirationfromtheirlivestoworkforournation.

We may have come a long way from repressing women's rights, but we are still a patriarchal society in general. It makes the occasion of celebrating Women's Equality Day on August 26 more vital than ever. Today we get to see women representatives in the military, in space, and as CEOs of many companies. But they had to undergo many struggles to achieve equal rights. Scouts and Guides, Rovers and Rangers may organise awarenessprogrammesabouttheequalitytoourwomen inallfields.

TRAINER’S CORNER

Scouts and Guides movement is based on its purpose, principles, values and the Method. These four pillars of the Movement give it a specific identity at local, state, national and international levels.Scoutmovementbecamepopularallovertheworldwithinaveryshorttimefromthetimeit wasfoundedbecauseithasbeenidentifiedasamovementforpreparingyoungsterstobegoodand efficient citizens. Scouting can succeed in fully achieving its educational purpose, only if its specific identityisprotected.

Our scout organisations at different levels may have partnership programmes with other institutions or organisations under the condition that educational purpose of scouting is not affectedorinfluenced.Itdoesnotmeanthatourmovementshouldoperateinisolation.Infact,our movementhasitsspecificidentityandgainpopularityatalllevelsduetothesupportofmostofthe institutionsandotherorganisations.

Members of our movement should be careful in protecting its self-identity and its common ethics. At all levels of the Movement, while we work with sponsoring bodies, working partners or similar organisations, governmental authorities, we are to be mindful in maintaining relationships with them, becausewecannotcompromiseonourpurpose, principles, valuesandthemethod.

role in the education of young people. We may work with a religious or community organisations but such an organisation must never control our movement or it cannot treat our movement as a subordinate to it. In the same way, our links with local or national authorities must never affect our voluntaryandnon-formaleducationalroleinsociety.

To conclude, on the nature of independence, all the members of the Scout Movement must note thatthenatureandspecificidentityofourMovementareinternationallydefinedandagreedbyall theNationalScoutOrganisations.

Hintstoouradultleaders:

• Work with other organisations or institutions following the procedure but they should not affectourpurposeetc.

• Welcome sponsoring programmes but let them not misuse our Movement for their popularity.

• Choose the partnerships in such a way that such partnerships should not affect our fundamentalsoreducationalpurposeofthemovement.

• It is everyone`s responsibility to protect the self-identity and help to popularise our movementforthesafety, welfareandleadershipoffuturegeneration.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

SDG1:NOPOVERTY

THE CHALLENGE The world attained the first Millennium Development Goal target—to cut the 1990 poverty rate in half by 2015—five years ahead of schedule, in 2010. According to the World Bank, in 2015, one in ten people were living on less than USD 1.90 a day Nearly 1.1 billion fewer people are living in extremepovertythanin1990.In 2015, 736 million people lived on less than $1.90 a day The latest World Bank projections showthat if we continue downa business-as-usual path, the world will not be able to eradicate extreme poverty by 2030. Children, too, are victims of global poverty, with 29000 children dying every single day from preventable causes – such as diarrhoea, malaria, neonatal infection, pneumonia, preterm delivery, or lack of oxygenatbirth–whicharemoreoftenthannothighlycorrelatedwithpoverty

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Poverty is more than just the lack of income or access to resources – it manifestsitselfindiminishedopportunities foreducation, socialdiscriminationand theinabilityto participate in decision-making processes. For instance, in developing countries, children in the poorest households are four times less likely to be in school than those of the richest. But extreme deprivation is not just about wellbeing and opportunity; it is a question of survival itself. In Latin America and East Asia, the poorest children are three times more likely to die by age 5 than the richest.

It calls for ensuring social protection, enhancing access to basic services, and building resilience against the impacts of natural disasters which can cause severedamagetopeople’sresourcesandlivelihoods.Theinternationalcommunityagrees, through theSustainableDevelopmentagendafor2030,thateconomicgrowthmustbeinclusive,especially of the most poor and vulnerable, and aims to eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere inthenext15years.
