OH , W HAT A
strange year IT’S BEEN! Our lives were turned upside down last year when this pandemic started, and things haven’t been the same since. But, as they say, strength comes from adversity, and the Briar Club family came together to create a new Club experience in the middle of the chaos of the pandemic. We pride ourselves in being your home away from home, and we’re proud of the way our members and staff have adapted to the limitations, restrictions, and safety procedures brought about by COVID-19. Despite everything, we had a year full of wonderful memories. As we reflect on a tumultuous year, we remember the most positive things about 2020: the smiles, the laughter, and the joy at each shared moment. We’d like to thank you for your continued support of the Club. We look forward to brighter days ahead! THEBRIARCLUB.COM | 4

FROM THE
T
General Manager
here is a famous quote by Winston Churchill that states “if you’re going through hell, keep on going.” This quote genuinely defines the hospitality business during this time of COVID-19. As managers of this industry, we have had to take a step back and readjust everything that we have ever known. Preserving cash became our number one priority, but we also had to consider how to best serve our members while being safe. How do we think outside the box and adapt to these challenges? How do we safely talk to members when we are supposed to remain six feet away? It goes against everything we have ever been taught. I have to say that I am extremely proud of each and every one of our staff members here at the Club. We saw inventive ideas such as an Easter Bunny drive-thru, virtual mixology classes, virtual fitness and so much more. As we continue to progress with more openings and programming, we are thankful for all of our members who have been so supportive during these times. I know wearing a face mask is exhausting; we understand, we are tired of them too. I have hope that we are getting closer to the finish line - hang in there!
I was recently reading a national club magazine article that mentioned The Briar Club as “one of the best clubs in the nation.” I cannot begin to tell you how proud that makes me. I hope it makes you proud as well. We have an amazing facility, amazing amenities and an incredible staff that is second to none. These are very exciting times for the Club and our future is tremendously bright. I recently had the honor to sit on a speaker panel for the Club Managers Association of America, where over 500 club managers were in attendance. It was amazing to see how advanced we are compared to other clubs when it comes to technology and overall programming. It was a great feeling to see other highly regarded club managers taking notes as to “how The Briar Club does it!” Our financials continue to be strong, under the leadership and watchful eye of our CFO Dustin Wade, and we have every intention of keeping them strong while we continue to enhance the campus. And speaking of enhancing the campus... Our Bistro renovation project that we announced last year is now full steam ahead! Although we had to postpone the renovations once the pandemic hit, the Board has re-approved the project and we are scheduled to begin construction in mid-April. The project is projected to take 12 weeks. Once completed, we will have an amazing family dining space sure to please all ages. A special thank you goes to Kathy Masterson, Amy Munger and Elizabeth Stiver for their time and hard work helping us with the project. If you would like to see the drawings, I invite you to stop by my office. I would be more than happy to walk you through the project. Additionally, we appreciate all of the positive feedback about the parking garage entrance relocation. Completed in November 2020, the entrance was relocated to provide a safer walkway for pedestrians, and so far, so good - although personally, I have driven past the new entrance about five times now! Another big moment in this crazy year was February’s big freeze. Our facilities did very well; we lost a few pipes, but, with the leadership of our property manager, Jesse Pizano, we were able to get back online quickly. Unfortunately, we did lose a portion of our beautiful landscaping. Together with our landscaping contractor, we have worked out a strong plan to get our campus back to green as quickly as possible. Beginning in April and running through 2021, I will host small, complimentary lunches for members who are interested in what’s going on around the Club. These lunches will take place the last Friday of each month and are open to anyone who’d like to know more or would like to provide feedback. Thank you for all your continued support. Please know my door is always open! Daniel Moreno General Manager/C.O.O.

FROM THE
D
ear friends and Members,
President
2020 was incredibly challenging on so many levels that it is hard to fathom anything as difficult in 2021. Alas and as you know, we did have to close the Club for a week in February due to a historic freeze and subsequent grid shut down. Fortunately, this event was far more transitory than the pandemic and we returned to full operations when deemed safe for our staff and members alike. I am honored to be your president and, along with a terrific Board, enthusiastic to move forward after enduring 2020.
As mentioned, we have a fantastic Board and I encourage you to meet as many of these folks as possible during the year. We had an enormous amount of interest in the three open Board seats last fall and many thanks to all that were involved in the process and all that voted. The widespread participation in such a year demonstrates the value the Club brings to each one of our member families. All of us are more excited and engaged than ever about getting involved and helping. Awesome! Please know that all Board members are accessible and available to all of you so don’t be shy. Three Board members, Mary Majors Payne, Larry Labanowski, and Rick Walton (president, 2019) completed their distinguished service to the Club at the conclusion of 2020. They were tremendous Club advocates and their service and energy spent on the Club’s behalf is much appreciated. Our three new Board members, Melissa Stryker, Duy Nguyen, and Kim Wilson have hit the ground running and I am confident they will serve and represent you well. A very special debt of gratitude and thanks must be extended to Brenda Bowman, our 2020 Club President. Our Club was fortunate to have such a thoughtful and calm leader at the helm during an unimaginably turbulent year. Should you see Brenda on campus, please stop and thank her for her stellar service. She was remarkable under pressure and I look forward to her continued support and guidance as ex-officio in 2021. Our 2021 goals are lofty yet attainable. We have, as many of you know, re-engaged GGA Partners to conduct a strategic plan and you will soon see tangible results. The Briar Club 2030 Plan will position the Club for success for many years to come and we are excited to start this process... again. We are also moving forward with Bistro renovation after placing this important project on hold in the spring of 2020. This area of the Club remains a focal point and we intend on improving the space dramatically. With the success of our recently configured and safer parking garage, you may be curious about the Club’s financial situation. In short, we are in a tremendously strong financial position and prepared to move forward with appropriate capital projects, campus maintenance, and servicing loan payments. Our management team and Board proactively took the steps (not always easy) to ensure the financial wellbeing of the Club when the pandemic changed the world. I told the Board when elected president that we must continue to adapt, improvise, and overcome all obstacles as we all move closer to a new normal post-pandemic. We must also strive to improve on multiple fronts as well, and know we are all working together to ensure your visit to the Club is better than your previous visit. Our management team is accessible and sensitive to your concerns, and any time you have an inquiry or comment you should feel free to send an email to our General Manager, Daniel Moreno (daniel.moreno@thebriarclub.com) or our Assistant General Manager, Samantha Van Veen (samantha@thebriarclub.com). You will find them responsive and receptive. Club officers and directors are equally approachable, but what you tell us in passing may not be relayed as promptly and accurately as in a message you send directly to Daniel or Samantha. Nevertheless, feel free to stop me if we cross paths in the Fitness Center, on the tennis courts, or in the Clubhouse. My contact information is in the Membership Directory, so please contact me via any medium you prefer. Here is to a happy, productive, and healthy 2021! Regards, Dan Carter 2021 President, The Briar Club

Junior Tennis
junior developmental tennis program
The Briar Club Junior Developmental Tennis Program offers something for every child between 3-18 years old. Based on variances in age, skill level, and physical development, we offer outlets for every child to foster a love of tennis and physical activity.
We use the Net Generation model for our junior programming for children ages 3-10. Using low compression balls and customized equipment, our USPTA-certified tennis professionals can efficiently facilitate a child’s development of coordination, technical skills, and pointplay strategy. Some juniors will gravitate towards using tennis as an opportunity to have fun and socialize with friends and peers, while others will look to joining school teams, playing in matches and competing in tournaments. We aim to cater to both types of players and encourage all to develop a love of the sport. Our spring junior tennis program will wrap up in May. We are so proud of all of our participants! Registration for our fall junior tennis program will open this summer.
