What you say about your spouse matters! BY TIMOTHY BROWN YEARS ago I made a choice that I wouldn’t talk negatively about my wife to or in front of others and I’ve stuck to it. I’ll brag on her any chance I get but won’t put her down before others. As a husband, my responsibility is to build her up and help her become the person God wants her to be. If I speak negatively about her to others and it gets back to her, that will discourage her and tear her down. Also, when speaking negatively about her, I’m putting myself down because I chose to marry her. I didn’t realize it, but she made the same commitment about me. It’s amazing what a blessing this commitment has been to our marriage. When my wife goes out with friends, I know she won’t talk bad about me to them. The next time I see those friends, I don’t have to wonder if they’re thinking negative thoughts about me because of something she’s said. If you talk negatively about your spouse to your friends, you’re only presenting one side of the situation and those friends can develop a bad attitude about your spouse and tell others. If word gets back to your spouse (and somehow it usually does) it’s going to damage your relationship. When you spend time with those friends, your mate will wonder what bad things you’re sharing this time, even if you’re not saying anything about your mate to them. You may give the push back that you need to talk about those things to help you better deal with them. If you need to talk to someone about the negative issues with your spouse, start by talking to God. There are times when you need to go to God and unload your frustration or resentment. That’s OK. He can handle it, but if that’s all you do on a consistent basis, you can actually compound the problem. By focusing on the issues, you’re reinforcing them in your own mind and they tend to grow a bit worse with each telling. What should you do? Take the issues to God one at a time, but instead of complaining about them, ask God to reveal to you the reason why they bother you so much. Is it a selfish reason, an unmet expectation, or are you upset about something unrelated and are looking for negative things as a result? Are you doing something, without even realizing it, that’s making your spouse act that way? Have you talked with your spouse about it or just assumed they should know it bothers you? Ask God to help you see the situation from his perspective and reveal how you may be contributing to the problem. Then ask him to help you change any wrong thoughts or attitudes on your Website: www.christianmessenger.in Email: contact@christianmessenger.in

part and to see your spouse as God sees them. If you find you still need to talk to someone, choose that person wisely and don’t go just to vent. Don’t go to someone who will just side with you, but will look at the situation from both perspectives so they can give you proper advice. A great thing to do is to find a couple that has been married 10 or more years longer than you, that has a close and loving relationship. Instead of launching into your situation, take time to ask them for advice on what’s helped make their marriage strong. See if they would be willing to help mentor you in your marriage relationship and then be willing to follow their advice. To close this article, I’d like to give you a two-part challenge. Part 1: Ask yourself and God if you’ve spoken negatively about your spouse this past month. If you’re not sure, ask God to bring specific instances to mind if you have. Then talk with God about it and make a commitment that you won’t speak negatively about your mate from this point forward. Part 2: Look for opportunities this week where you can speak positively about your spouse and even brag on them a bit. When doing so, make sure the words are genuine and come from the heart and aren’t just spoken to make them feel good or make you look good. When you consistently speak positively about your spouse, you won’t have to worry about what will happen if they find out what you said. I don’t know about you, but when I hear that someone has said something positive about me, it makes me feel good inside. Isn’t that something you want for your spouse? Timothy Brown has been in ministry for over 30 years and has been married to his wife for over 30 years. He has a desire to help other married couples strengthen their marriages. 3

GUIDE POST

Successful non-profits do these 7 key things! SUCCESSFUL non-profits are not an accident; they are the result of leadership that employs sound financial management practices. Developing the following seven financial habits will ensure your non-profit can successfully fulfill its mission and that it is being a good steward of donor funds. Equally important, developing these habits will enable you to lead with confidence and flexibility knowing your financial affairs are in order. Make budgeting your number one priority. Successful non-profits don’t just throw numbers on a page and call it a day. Instead, they carefully think through where funds are coming from and what they will be spending on programming to fulfill their mission. They follow a clearly defined process to ensure the assumptions used to create their budgets are sound. The result is a budget which serves as the road map they use to guide decision-making throughout the year. Know the cost of your programs. Successful non-profits know exactly how much their programs cost. Their accounting systems are set up to enable them to allocate expenses to specific programs so they can not only make informed decisions about how to operate more efficiently, but so they can also

accurately report to donors how their funds are being spent. Understand the importance of positive cash flow. Successful non-profits are not caught off guard by a lack of funds. They have a good idea of how much cash will be on hand at any given moment to fund not only programming activities but operating expenses as well. They have ample cash reserves to get the organization through ebbs in working capital. When they tap their reserves, they have a plan for replenishing them by a specific date. Reject the notion that ‘overhead’ is a dirty word. Successful non-profits challenge those who constantly suggest they cut overheard. Instead, they recognize that general operating expenses (competitive salaries, fringe benefits, rent, office supplies, technology, etc.) fund the infrastructure that enables the organization to do its best work. Unskilled labor, operating out of offices that are falling apart, and lack of state of the art technology is a recipe for disaster. Successful non-profits recruit and hire the very best talent and provide them with the proper tools they need to do great work. They

reject age-old thinking that non-profit means cheap. Maintain an operating fund reserve. Successful non-profits have six months or more of operating reserves on hand at any given time. They are prepared for the unexpected loss of a major gift, or the unexpected need to invest additional resources to achieve a program goal. They have written guidelines for how large their operating reserves need to be, when they can be tapped and, if they are tapped, when and how they will be replenished. Become financially literate. Successful non-profits make sure board members and staff are financially literate. While financial literacy does not have to rise to the auditor’s level, board and staff need to understand financial terminology and they need to know how to read and use financial reports to guide their decision-making. Be good stewards of your donors’ funds. Don’t guess, know. Successful non-profits make decisions based on facts not hunches. How many times have we heard a staff member or board member say “I think we should do x” when what we would rather hear is “I surveyed our constituents and this is what I found: 93% are without x and lack the means to do y. Based on this information, I researched what it would cost for us to launch and sustain a program to meet this need.” (John Thew)

The power of prayer what a blessing it is to pray to the God of Daniel! None of our prayers made to God is in vain. He hears them all. What more, He sends His angels to let us know that He has heard our prayers! ‘I have come because of your words.’ The words you utter in faith in your prayer room have power! They can bring down the angels from God’s presence. They come carrying a message from God. The angel who appeared before Daniel told him: ‘O Daniel, man greatly beloved.’ Oh, what joy to be told by a heavenly being that the God of heavens loves you greatly. The first few verses tell us from a human perspective the reason for Daniel’s prayer. ‘…and he understood the message, and had understanding of the vision.’ But, verse 12 tells us how God viewed Daniel’s prayer. ‘…from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God.’ That verse gives us an insight into the mind of God – about how He views our prayers. Are our prayers merely to obtain something from God or do we pray to set our hearts to understand and humble ourselves before God? Let us examine ourselves.

BY ROBIN SAM ‘Your words were heard; and I have come because of your words’ (Daniel 10:12). DANIEL was a man of prayer. He prayed three times a day with his windows open towards Jerusalem. He prayed alone, in his upper room. The Bible takes care to record that Daniel prayed on his knees. Prayer is an act of submission. In prayer, we tell God we need help. That we cannot handle our lives on our own! In prayer, we recognize God’s sovereignty over our lives. The 10th chapter of the book of Daniel suggests that he fasted and prayed for 21 days. It must have been a partial fast as the Bible notes that Daniel ate no pleasant food or meat or wine during the period. However, he must have had a frugal meal or two to keep up his stamina to do the royal duties assigned to him by the king. When was the last time we took to fasting and praying? If you ask me, one of the most beautiful verses in the Bible comes in Daniel 10:12. The angel who appeared to Daniel told him: ‘Your words were heard, and I have come because of your words.’ Oh,

How to obey God’s commands! “Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts.” – 1 Corinthians 7:19 In his sermon entitled “Obeying the Commandments – 1 John 2,” Pastor Rick Ezell wrote the following about obedience: “I read of a housekeeper that went to work for a bachelor. Each day when the man would leave for work, he would leave a list of projects for the housekeeper to complete. In time, the two fell in love and became married. Upon arriving at work, following their wedding, his buddies asked if he left her the list. He said, ‘No.’ ‘Well,’ they said, ‘she will watch television all day and do nothing.’ The newlywed replied, ‘No. She will do all those tasks and more, not because she has to but because she wants. She will do it for love.’” May your love for Jesus shine through you in all that you do. Today in prayer, seek to follow Jesus Christ in everything you do. “Holiness does not consist in mystic speculations, enthusiastic fervours, or uncommanded austerities; it consists in thinking as God thinks, and willing as God wills.” – John Brown Read 1 John 2:3-6. (Peter Kennedy)

Partner with Messenger Missions Remember the poor! (Galatians 2:10) Beginning March 2020, we have been reaching out to people in distress in the aftermath of Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns with relief kits in the form of grocery bags containing, rice and other essential items. We are continuing to assist poor and needy families in several neighborhoods to alleviate suffering due to job losses and other reasons. If you would like to reach out to them too, join hands with us.

Grocery Bags: A grocery bag consists of 15 items including 5 kilos of rice and other essentials such as cooking oil, tea powder, spices, pulses, sugar, salt, tooth paste, a bath soap and a detergent soap. A grocery bag costs Rs.1,000. If you are led by God to help the less privileged people in the society, please feel free to partner with Messenger Missions. Please use the account details given below to send your donations and offerings. You can call us or email us with the details of the project you are sponsoring with your sacrificial contributions.
