The Rebbe’s Business Advice The entire community of Chernigov was in shock and grief. Reb Yekusiel, the Kehillah’s renowned philanthropist was arrested on false charges of tax evasion and misappropriation of government funds. Reb Yekusiel was known for his integrity, honesty and charity and had earned the respect of Jews and non-Jews alike. Yet, this era in Czarist Russia meant that nothing was of certainty and Reb Yekusiel’s connections did nothing to save his fate, he was sentenced to ten years of slave labor in Siberia. On the day before Reb Yekusiel was sent east, a man approached the town’s Rabbi, it was the warden of the local jail and he summoned the Rabbi upon Reb Yekusiel’s request and assured him that special permission had been granted for his visit. The Rabbi hurried to the jail and the two men embraced and wept silently for some time. Finally, Reb Yekusiel spoke and stated that he wished to relate a story so that others can learn a lesson. He said that several months before, he was traveling to St Petersburg for some meetings with regard to his government dealings. He heard that the Lubavitcher

Rebbe was on the train and he passed by his compartment hoping to catch a glimpse of his face. The door was open and he suddenly found himself looking into the Rebbe’s holy face as the Rebbe motioned him to enter. They spoke awhile and in parting the Rebbe told him that he heard that the government is planning to build a railway across Siberia and the Rebbe advised him to obtain a sizeable contract as a lumber supplier. Reb Yekusiel was confused, he wished to follow the Rebbe’s advice but the thought of spending long months in Siberia to oversee the operation held no attraction though the contract would offer him great financial compensation. After much hesitation, Reb Yeskusiel was ready to obtain the contract but it was too late as others had already taken it. Reb Yekusiel turned to the Rabbi of Chernigov and said, “Now I am indeed on my way to Siberia, I had thought back then that the Rebbe was giving me business advice. Now I realize, he must have seen that there is something I have to achieve in Siberia, I could have gone in comfort. Alas, I am going in chains…” RivkyWeber Bus Car4_RL.ai

Lead Found in Imported Rice

Some imported rice has levels of lead high enough to pose health risks, especially to children, scientists found. An analysis of rice imported from Asia, Europe and South America showed levels far beyond FDA recommendations, researchers said at the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans on Monday. “Such findings present a situation that is particularly worrisome given that infants and children are especially vulnerable to the effects of lead poisoning,” lead researcher Tsanangurayi Tongesayi said in a press release. “For infants and children, the daily exposure levels from eating the rice products analyzed in this study would be 30-60 times higher than the FDA’s provisional total tolerable intake (PTTI) levels. Asians consume more rice, and for these infants and children, exposures would be 60-120 times higher. For adults, the daily exposure levels were 20-40 times higher than the PTTI levels.” The analysis follows a recent report that more than half a million kids in the United States had blood lead levels of concern in 2010. That report was based on new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that parents of children with lead levels of 5 micrograms per deciliter should be alerted. In the past, the standard

was 10 micrograms per deciliter. The good news? Overall, lead levels in children have dropped. The average fell to 1.3 micrograms per decileter using the data from 2007-2010. Rice from Taiwan, China, Czech Republic, Bhutan, Italy, India and Thailand had the highest amounts of lead. Researchers are still analyzing samples from Pakistan, Brazil and other countries.

The first iPhone was invented in 1983! Naturally, this wasn’t anything like the rectangular cell phone we know today. It was a land line phone with, instead of a touch screen, a built in stylus controlled interface. It was designed by Apple computer developer Hartmut Esslinger, and foreshadows the touchscreen designs used by the iPad and iPhone today. He had also developed the Apple IIc, the first “portable” computer by Apple. It was never released to the public, but was kept in the Apple archives until the design was released in 1997 after Steve Jobs rejoined the company. This iPhone isn’t the only prototype of Apple that never saw the light of day. Apple had toyed around with the iPhone design for years before its launch. What’s interesting is that the 1983 iPhone device resembles an iPad with a phone, but iPads still lack this conventional phone call technology despite everything else they do.
