The Making of a Tzadik The Chassidim of the Rebbe, Rabbi Elimeilech of Lizhensk were en route to Lizhensk to spend some time basking in the radiance of their holy master and to seek inspiration and chizuk. The journey was arduous and the Chassidim kept on passing shtetl after shtetl as they continued on to Lizhensk. In one of the passing shtetls, they noticed an extremely destitute Jewish child dancing in the middle of the street all by himself with a blissful expression on his face. They stopped their carriage and approached the lad asking, “Why are you dancing like this?” The child answered, “Well…it is because I have not eaten in three days.” The Chassidim were perplexed, “You are dancing because you have not eaten?” The child unhesitatingly explained, “Initially, I was very heartbroken and upset. How can Hashem not provide me with food for so long? I am just a child, how much could I already have sinned during the short time that I have been here on this world?” The child paused and continued on in a louder note, “but,

then it suddenly dawned on me all the good things that I do possess, all the blessings that I have in my life, that I am healthy and that I have healthy parents and that is why I am dancing with such joy!” The Chassidim were stunned by the spirit and fortitude of such a young child. They approached his parents and said, “You have an extremely special child, with a very holy neshamah. Do you send him to a Melamed who teaches him Torah?” The Father replied, “No, we are so poor, we cannot even afford to feed our children in a regular manner, we definitely cannot instruct a Melamed to teach our son.” The Chassidim entreated, “Let us take your son with us, we will take him to our Rebbe, Rabbi Elimeilech.” The child’s father acquiesced and so it came to be that this child became known as none other than the great Rabbi Menacham Mendel of Riminov.

Practical Advice for Avoiding Environmental Toxins
Nearly 70,000 industrial chemicals are now found in our everyday products, with 1,000 new synthetic chemicals introduced each year. Only a fraction of these have been tested for safety in humans. EPA estimates suggest that the average American could be carrying approximately 700 industrial chemicals in their bodies. While it is not possible to completely eliminate toxin exposure from all sources, there are ways to minimize it. Here are a few: • Limit your exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This type of toxin is found in common household items like air fresheners, carpet cleaners and even disinfectants. Purchase products that are labeled as low VOC. • Store food in containers labeled as bisphenol A (BPA)-free or phthalatefree. Don’t heat food in plastic containers.
getting rid of pesticides as produce wash solutions. Peeling skins off of produce may help to further lower pesticide levels; however, the peel contains fiber and important nutrients. • Limit your intake of processed foods. Even ones that are free of synthetic preservatives may contain detectable amounts of toxic compounds that were introduced during processing. For example, numerous toxins are produced by the high temperatures used to manufacture some processed foods. Let’s be real, it’s almost impossible to completely avoid environmental toxins. So besides doing your best to avoid exposure, increase your intake of a few key nutrients for added protection. Tomorrows Edition: Nutrients that help protect us from toxins.
• Look for organic produce, which is grown without pesticides, and will contain fewer residues than conventionallyproduced fruits and vegetables. It turns out that washing food with plain water is just as effective in

Orange Sweet Potato Baked Chips Ingredients: 1 medium sweet potato (about 8 oz), scrubbed 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 tsp orange zest 1/4 tsp salt freshly ground pepper 1 tsp thyme Directions: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 325°F and arrange a rack in the middle. Slice the sweet potato into very thin rounds using a mandoline slicer. 2. Mix together olive oil and orange zest in a small bowl. 3. Brush two baking sheets with half of the oil mixture. 4. Place potato slices on the sheets in a single layer and brush tops with remaining oil. 5. Sprinkle with thyme, salt and freshly ground pepper. 6. Bake one sheet at a time (approximately 20 minutes) until the edges of the chips curl up and the centers are just golden brown and tops dry to the touch. Place the baking sheet on a wire rack and allow the chips to cool until crisp – approximately 3 minutes. Using your hands, carefully transfer the chips to a serving dish. Repeat with the second sheet. NOTE: For one medium sweet potato, you will need two-three baking sheets.

Only two years after the legendary sinking of the Titanic, the RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the Saint Lawrence River after colliding with a Norwegian collier in 1914. There were nearly 1,500 people on board and only about 400 survived, making the tragedy even worse than the Titanic, losing .5% more people. You’d assume after the tragedy of the Titanic, papers and people around the globe would harp on the event until an Oscar deserving movie was released, yet history seems to have forgotten the Empress for one small reason. The ship sank in May, and World War I formally started in July. However, tensions were mounting throughout Europe with the mobilization of German and Austro-Hungarian forces. People were so terrified that a war would break out encompassing the entire World that they had little interest in another Titanic, and so history has all but forgotten a tragedy even worse than the famous one!
