Achieving Greatness There was a plan in Pre-war Europe to initiate a Yeshivah only for the Metziunim; the cream of the crop. It was thought that all the best masmidim from all the Yeshivos would be gathered to create a Yeshivah which would cultivate the future Gaonim and Gedolim of tomorrow’s Klal Yisroel. Rav Hutner was a young bachur at the time and approached the Alter of Slabdodka to discuss his plan of joining this new Yeshivah where the greatest minds of all Europe would come together and study Torah, something like never before. The Alter smiled at the young Rav Hutner and took him to the window. “Look out of the window” The Alter said gently. “What do you see?” “A river,” answered Rav Hutner. The Alter continued, “Why do you want to go to this Yeshivah where there will only be the best bachurim? You would do better for Klal Yisroel by

jumping right now into this river rather than going to that Yeshivah.” Naturally after hearing such impassioned and strong words from the Alter, Rav Hutner never attended that Yeshivah. Rav Hutner though did not fully comprehend the Alter’s reasoning behind his strong opposition. Only years later, did Rav Hutner grasp clarification when it became known that almost all of the bachurim who attended that Yeshivah left Yiddishkeit and embraced the socialist and communist lifestyle. The Alter of Slabdoka understood that Torah learning has to be inclusive and it is not just for those that are the best. Many of Klal Yisroel’s great Gedolim were not born geniuses but they sat day and night with perseverance to become who they are now. Greatness is not a thing which is acquired easily, the climb may be grueling but with determination and strength all of us can get there!

Another Deadly Chemical in Our Food Supply

Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is vegetable oil with bromine added to it. Brominated vegetable oil is used as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored soft drinks to help the flavors stay suspended in the drink and to produce a cloudy appearance. Just look at Mountain Dew, for example. The hazy appearance within its very unnatural fluorescent color comes from BVO. Patented by chemical companies as a flame retardant, and banned in food throughout Europe and Japan, BVO has been added to soft drinks for decades in North America. Now, some scientists have a renewed interest in this little-known ingredient. Is BVO Safe? Overall, this is probably not a safe additive. Even the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations imposes restrictions on the use of BVO in the United States. Because there are questions about its safety, an obvious restriction is to limit the amount of BVO in soft drinks. The FDA limits the use of BVO to 15 parts per million in fruit-flavored beverages. The FDA labels BVO as an “interim food additive” which is “a food-use substance whose safety has been called into question.” The FDA has classified only four substances as interim food additives: BVO, acrylonitrile, mannitol, and saccharin. The European Union, however, isn’t messing around with an interim labeling. They think it’s dangerous and they’ve excluded it from the current EUapproved additives list.

as “Brominated Thyroid.” In a sense, this is a type of thyroid goiter, although the effects are more subtle than what you will see with a true iodine deficiency. This condition was originally seen in animal studies testing flame retardants. After the studies, the animals involved often developed low thyroid secondary to bromine leaching into their bloodstreams. Additionally, bromine is considered a potential carcinogen and causes a number of problems such as headaches, fatigue, and possibly even heart and kidney issues. An interesting condition is called Bromoderma. These are painful skin sores that were first seen in young adults who consume large amounts of citrus-flavored drinks.Bromoderma normally occurs in people with bromine or bromide sensitivities. However, it can occur with ingestion of large amounts of bromine from certain soft-drinks. The FDA Says A Little BVO is Safe As mentioned above, the FDA allows 15 parts per million of BVO in fruit-flavored beverages. This level was determined in 1977 by reports from a soda-industry group. But some scientists say that limit is based on data that is thin and several decades old. Considering that sodas are a substantial source of calories for teenagers, scientists insist BVO needs further investigation.

Lemon-Herb Roast Chicken This scrumptious Lemon-Herb Roast Chicken is the perfect main dish for a lovely Chanukah dinner! Be it your hosting family or friends, this dish will go down with all! This recipe makes a perfectly seasoned, perfectly moist, perfectly crisp-skinned and golden bird that requires no basting or fussing. Yields 4 to 6 servings Ingredients: 1 4-pound chicken 2 tbsp. margarine, softened 2 tsp kosher salt (or half as much table salt) 3 cloves crushed garlic 2 or 3 fresh herb sprigs 1 thick slice of lemon 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, sliced thick Other vegetables (carrot or celery sticks) optional 1 cup water Directions: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 450. 2. Rinse the chicken, pat it dry with paper towels and then rub it all over with the margarine. 3. Salt it inside and out, then pop the garlic, herbs and lemon into its cavity. 4. Now spread the olive oil in a baking dish and arrange the onions and any other vegetables you like, over the bottom of the dish. 5. Place the chicken atop the vegetables and pour in the water. 6. Roast until it is done - around 1 Â˝ hours. 7. Remove the chicken and put it on a cutting board to rest before carving 8. Separate the chicken from the vegetables and put them on a platter 9. Then evaluate the juice left over in your pan (you can pour the juice into a gravy separator to siphon off the fat) Use a hand blender to whir the juice together with the browned onions from the pan in order to make the gravy. 10. Pour the gravy over the chicken and ENJOY!
