Hunger and a Coin The Rebbe, Reb Menachem Mendel of Rimanov was a great Chassidishe Rebbe who was known for his tremendous Yiras Shamayim and his fiery Tefilos; he was considered a Miracle Worker by all who knew him. Despite it all, the Rimanover Rebbe was not well off and was so destitute that he could not even feed his own children. One day, the Rebbe came home and found his little son sobbing. The child’s piercing cries came from deep within. The poor boy had not tasted food in a long time. “I cannot take it anymore, Tatte!” His son said. With a heart full of sympathy, the Rebbe gently rebuked him by saying, “My dear child, if you were really so hungry, Hashem would provide you with food…”

2

The boy could not control his tears and left the room, still crying. A few minutes passed and the Rebbe called out to his son and said, “Please forgive me, my child. I really had no idea that you were so hungry. I just took one of my Seforim off the table and look, I found a coin. Hashem always helps when we need it most!” The Rebbe pressed the coin into his son’s hand and said, “Now, hurry, buy some bread to eat” We tend to think that we cannot hold out in situations which we may find ourselves, it may be in terms of hunger, grief, financial difficulties or perhaps some other test. Yet, Hashem know what we truly need and when we truly need it and at the right moment, Hashem supplies it. We just have to acknowledge this and trust Hashem alone!

8 SNOW SHOVELING SAFETY TIPS

In 2007, more than 118,000 individuals in the US were treated in hospital emergency rooms, doctors’ offices and other medical offices for injuries related to snow shoveling or manual removal of ice, according to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission. Here are some snow shoveling safety tips: 1. Don’t Shovel Snow If You’re Not Physically Fit Shoveling snow can strain your heart and back. Try to avoid the job if you aren’t in good physical shape, are older, overweight or have a history of back or heart problems. 2. Warm Up Your Muscles before You Shovel As with any physically demanding exercise, before you begin shoveling, do warm-up stretches and flexing exercises to loosen up the muscles and prepare them for the job ahead. 3. Lighten the Load with the Right Snow Shovel A snow shovel should be lightweight, about 1.5 kg, or a little over 3 lbs, and the blade shouldn’t be too large. Otherwise your load will be too heavy, putting too much stress on your heart and back. The handle should be long enough so that you don’t have to stoop to shovel and the grip should be made of plastic or wood because metal gets too cold. As a general guideline, the shovel (blade plus handle) should be elbow height when standing upright.

(especially your ears), feet and hands are well covered. Your winter boots should be warm, water-resistant and high-cut, and provide good traction. Gloves should be light and flexible and give you a good grip. If it’s really cold, wear something over your mouth. 5. Pace – Don’t Race Shoveling snow in heavy-duty clothing can be as strenuous as weightlifting. You may want to get the job over with as fast as you can, but it’s better to keep moving and work at a steady pace. 6. Push – Don’t Lift Push the snow rather than lifting it. If you must throw it, take only as much snow as you can easily lift. And remember, the wetter the snow, the heavier it is. 7. Face – Don’t Twist Turn your feet to the direction you’re throwing. Don’t twist at the waist. Don’t throw snow over your shoulder or to the side. 8. Rest and Recover Take frequent breaks and drink some warm fluids. In extreme conditions, such as very cold and windy weather, 15 minutes of shoveling should be followed by 15 minutes of rest.

4. Bundle Up When You Shovel Wear several layers of warm lightweight clothing that’s easy and comfortable to move in. Make sure your head

Over Your They say... Not to unlearn what you have learned is the most necessary kind of learning. Did you know...? An average snowflake is made up of 180 billion molecules of water. All snowflakes have six sides.

Watermelon snow has many names including snow algae, red snow, or blood snow. It is characterized by reddish to pink colored snow with a slight smell of fresh watermelon. Watermelon snow is created by the presence of chlamydomonas nivalis, a species of green algae containing a secondary red carotenoid pigment plus chlorophyll. This type of algae is uncommon as it is cryophilic (cold-loving) and thrives in freezing water. This kind of snow is common in the summer in the alpine and coastal polar regions throughout the world. The altitudes watermelon snow thrives in are 10,000 to 20,000 feet and the temperatures are cold year round to support the algae. Sierra Nevada of California is a perfect example of where watermelon snow lives and the snow lingers from winter storms. When you step on the snow or make snow balls compressing it, the snow turns the reddish color. Walking through watermelon snow will often leave the soles of your shoes and pant cuffs pinkish.
