When Is Bad Good? There was a Yeshivah near the town of Anapoly where the Chassidishe Rebbe, Reb Zusha resided. One day, the Yeshivah students were in the midst of their learning when they came across the Passuk that said, “we must thank Hashem for the good as well as the bad”. The students were extremely perplexed and could not understand how a person can thank Hashem for the bad things which occur. The pondered for a while and then posed the question to the Rosh Yeshivah. He stroked his long beard and though for a while. He then proceeded to address the students and told them that this question can only be answered by Rabbi Zusha of Anapoly. He instructed them to go to Rabbi Zusha’s house and ask him. The Yeshivah students decided to leave immediately. Rabbi Zusha lived on the outskirts of town and the students walked for some time until they reached a wooded forest. They followed a narrow path and arrived at an extremely run down hut, the

windows were broken, the roof was badly dented and the walls of the hut were in poor shape and cracked. Rabbi Zusha greeted the students with joy and led them into to his humble abode. The students glanced at each other in wonderment as they noticed the poverty in which Rabbi Zusha lived. The chairs were sparse and wobbly and there were almost no other furnishings. Rabbi Zusha profusely apologized to the students as he did not have anything to offer them and asked them if a glass of hot water would do. The students hurried to clarify that they had come to ask him why it says that we must thank Hashem for the good as well as the bad? Rabbi Zusha asked them, “Why have you come to me to ask this question? I also cannot understand the Passuk. Nothing bad has ever occurred to me. Is it possible that Hashem does anything bad?

How To Test For Insulin Resistance
Metabolic syndrome and its associated condition of insulin resistance pose a major threat to cardiovascular health that most health care practitioners do not even discuss with their patients. It may cause obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal blood sugar levels and diabetes, fatty liver, heart attacks, Alzheimer’s, and can even cause amputations R”L, and many other diseases and conditions. Remarkably, the public knows very little about this silent but deadly condition, and many affected individuals are not even aware that metabolic syndrome is inflicting severe damage to their arteries and brain cells. The news media and health care providers pay almost no attention to the epidemic of insulin resistance, the fundamental cause of metabolic syndrome. Gauging Your Risk for Insulin Resistance Metabolic syndrome is characterized by insulin resistance. Before explaining insulin resistance, we need to understand what insulin is and how it acts in the body. A hormone produced in the pancreas, insulin’s major function is to regulate blood sugar, or glucose, levels. Insulin helps to shuttle glucose molecules from the blood into the cells of the body. When blood sugar levels increase, insulin output increases.
consequences, including glucose and insulin levels that are much higher than normal. As the body attempts to overcompensate for poor insulin action by pumping out more insulin from the pancreas, insulin levels rise. Eventually, over time, the pancreas can “burn out” and no longer produce enough insulin to control blood sugar. When insulin levels are not sufficient to bring blood sugar levels down to the normal range, type II diabetes can result. Certain blood tests such as fasting insulin can serve as surrogate markers for insulin resistance. Excess insulin (fasting hyperinsulinemia) is defined when levels equal to or greater than 15 µU/mL are found. These higher fasting insulin levels are associated with insulin resistance. Other blood tests that are very useful in evaluating the risk of insulin resistance include serum triglycerides and highdensity lipoprotein (HDL). Triglycerides equal to or greater than 130 mg/dL and a triglyceride:HDL ratio equal to or above 3:1 suggest a high risk of insulin resistance. In fact, some experts advocate even lower levels of triglycerides (less than 100 mg/ dL) as being optimal.
Insulin resistance means that insulin does not work optimally at its target tissue—such as muscle, fat, or liver tissue—to drive glucose into cells. This has numerous adverse

Dr. Arthur Lintgen can determine which piece of classical music is on a record just by looking at it. His knowledge of classical music goes back as far as Beethoven, so anything by Beethoven or afterward he can identify by the record grooves. By looking at the spacing and contour of the grooves, Lintgen can figure out the number of movements in a piece, the length of each movement, and how loud they all are. From that, he can accurately pick out which piece he’s reading All phonograph grooves vary minutely in their spacing and contour, depending on the dynamics and frequency of the music on them. Lintgen says that grooves containing soft passages look black or dark gray. As the music gets louder or more complicated, the grooves turn silvery. Percussive accents are marked by tiny “jagged tooth marks.” The doctor correlates what he sees with what he knows about music, matching the patterns of the grooves with compositional forms. In a way, it is like reading a graph of a given work’s structure. What is amazing about Lintgen is that he can read it so rapidly.
