The Sound of the Gragger It occurred in the little town of Vardik, deep in the Russian Motherland. The Yidden of town were afraid and worried. Instead of looking forward to the upcoming Yom Tov of Purim, they were deathly fearful that the entire Jewish community would be destroyed. The danger was great and looming. The son of the Czar had gone hunting in the woods with a group of his friends. After having lost their way, the group arrived in Vardik. The townspeople were excited to host this distinguished visitor and procured the finest room in the local inn for his use along with the best and delectable food items. The next day, the Prince suddenly became terribly ill and was unable to make his way back to St Petersburg. Messengers were hurriedly dispatched to the Czar and within a short time, the Czar and several of his closet ministers had arrived in Vardik. The top doctors of Russia were brought in to examine the Prince. However, all to no avail as the Prince continued moaning in pain. His face was flushed and he was burning with fever. His very life was in extreme danger. One of the Czar’s ministers hastened to the Czar and related that the Prince was sick because the Jews served him bad food. The Czar believed the libel and thus the Yidden in Vardik were frightened as they knew their fate hung in the balance. On the day before Purim, two notices were hung in the Town Square. The notices stated that if the prince did not recover by the end of the next day, all Jews residing in Vardik will be held responsible. Furthermore, the notice also stated that all the townspeople must take extreme care to remain quiet as the Prince was very weak and noise would affect him severely. The Yidden were in a quandary with regard

to the Czar’s edict about keeping quiet as the Megillah had to be read. The Yidden thus gathered silently in the little Shul on the main street, which was situated right near the inn where the Prince was residing. The Rabbi began reading and soon reached Haman’s name. Suddenly, an awful noise cut through the air as little Yaakov swung his gragger with all his might. Everyone became very frightened. The Rabbi continued reading. People were shaking their heads. They made signs to Yaakov that he must be quiet. One man wanted to take the gragger away from him, but Yaakov would not even let him touch it. Everyone was afraid that Yaakov would scream and make more noise if forced to give up his gragger. Thus he was allowed to keep it and for the duration of the Megillah swung his gragger at the mention of Haman’s name. The window to the Prince’s room was open in order to let in some fresh air. The doctors, ministers and the Czar were gathered around his bed. There was a heavy silence in the room as the Prince lay in bed, pale and weak. His eyes were closed and he did not seem to be breathing. A sound broke the stillness. The ministers ran to the window to see who the guilty party was. The next moment, they jumped in fright, as they heard a voice behind them asking for some water. There was the Prince, sitting up in bed, wide awake. “What a jolly noise I hear! What is it? Please bring me some water. I have never been so thirsty in my whole life. Hurry, please. I feel so dry.” The noise of the gragger had awakened the Prince. The Prince recovered and the whole entourage took leave of Vardik in happiness. The Yidden of town were saved and had the happiest Purim day truly thanking Hashem for continuing to save them in every generation.

How to naturally kick the smoking habit - for good!
Despite all the anti-smoking campaigns, cigarette taxes, novel smoking alternatives, and even smoking bans in some areas, millions of people still smoke cigarettes both out of habit and for pleasure. Sadly, many of these people, if asked, would say they do not actually like smoking, but feel as though they are hopelessly addicted with no effective way to quit. there is hope apart from trying to quit cold turkey, wearing nicotine patches, and taking anti-smoking drugs. Here are five natural approaches to kicking the smoking habit for good: 1) lobelia can also be taken in the form of a tincture or supplement to discourage the smoking habit. Lobelia contains 14 unique alkaloids including lobeline, which has been shown to stimulate the nerve cells that would normally respond to nicotine. “[U]nlike nicotine, which is high addictive, lobeline does not appear to be addictive 2) Acupuncture. Because it helps spur the production of serotonin in the brain, acupuncture can also help smokers kick the habit naturally. The reason for this is that when a person suddenly quits smoking, brain levels of serotonin decrease sharply, leading to intense withdrawal symptoms. A 2002 review published in the American Journal of Public Health found that acupuncture combined with education on smoking cessation is particularly effective at helping smokers quit.

3) Fruits and vegetables. For some people, simply eating more fruits and vegetables is the key to breaking the smoking habit. Researchers from the University of Buffalo in New York found that people who eat the most fruits and vegetables are three times more likely than those who eat the least to effectively abstain from smoking. This same group is also far less likely to suffer from withdrawal symptoms after quitting. 4) Valerian. A popular natural remedy for easing anxiety and promoting restful sleep, valerian may also help reduce nicotine cravings that are motivated by stress and anxiety. Particularly when combined with other antismoking herbs like oat stra, St. John’s Wort, and skullcap, valerian taken in either tea or supplement form can help significantly diminish the desire for nicotine, effectively killing the craving. 5) Exercise. Sometimes all it takes for some people to quit the smoking habit is to simply move their bodies more. A 2009 study found that the brain changes that occur in response to physical activity can actually help reduce cigarette cravings.

Black and Orange Truffles The perfect extra to add that final touch to your Mishloach Monos! Ingredients • 1 cup heavy cream • 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter • 2 tsp light corn syrup • 1 lb semisweet chocolate, finely chopped • 1/2 cup orange and black sprinkles, for decorating (or any color, as per your theme) • 1/2 cup orange and black sugar crystals, for decorating (or any color, as per your theme) Directions 1. Bring cream, butter, and corn syrup to a boil in a saucepan. Remove from heat. 2. Add chocolate and gently swirl pan to cover chocolate with cream. 3. Slowly whisk until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate. 4. Stir mixture every 15 minutes. 5. After 45 minutes, mixture will thicken quickly - then stir every 3 to 5 minutes until set but still pliable, then continue to chill for another 10 to 20 minutes more (total chilling time is 55 to 65 minutes.) 6. Refrigerate until firm but not hard - about 10 minutes. 7. Remove from refrigerator, and roll balls in palms to smooth. Refrigerate, in an airtight container, layered between pieces of parchment or waxed paper, until ready to decorate. 8. Remove balls from refrigerator. Place sprinkles and sanding sugar in separate small bowls. Dip balls into sprinkles or sanding sugar to coat, pressing sprinkles to adhere. Truffles can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 1 week. NOTE: Forming truffles is easiest with a 1-inch ice cream scoop; two teaspoons will also work. Yields: 4 Dozen Truffles

But it was a lack of waves that contributed to the Titanic hitting the iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14, 1912, and sinking on the 15th, a hundred years ago. On that night the weather and the sea conditions were perfect -- but for the Titanic, they were too perfect. There was no wind, and thus there were no waves. It was a flat calm. It was also a dark moonless night, which made it difficult to see an iceberg in the distance. On such a night, waves would have made the iceberg more visible. Even small waves would have caused a bright phosphorescent line around the base of the iceberg, due to the millions of dinoflagellates that migrate to the ocean surface at night. These tiny plankton glow brightly even with the slightest disturbance. (Sailors had seen this phosphorescence many times as they rowed through such waters, every stroke causing a glow that clearly outlined each oar.) On that night there was not even a gentle swell that could have caused a phosphorescent line around the iceberg.
