How I learned to study Torah (2) Summary: The parents of a little boy from a small shtetl in Europe are extremely concerned about their son’s disinterest to study Torah. After following advice from many people to no avail, the parents approached Rebbe Aaron of Karlin who had come to visit their shtetl. The Rebbe asked that they leave their little son with him and he will give him a talking to that he will never forget. Once the boy’s parents had left the room, the Rebbe approached the boy and slowly and gently put his arms around him. At first the boy remained stiff but then he relaxed and dropped his arms to the side. He finally rested his head against the Rebbe’s chest and stood there, listening to the rhythm of the Rebbe’s heartbeat. The parents returned after two hours and breathlessly asked, “Did it work?” The Rebbe nearly shouted and said, “You must wait and see!” All the way home, the parents kept sneaking at their boy. Was there any change? Could there be any change? They stopped at the butcher’s who hastily slapped a piece of meat on the counter. The boy noticed the butcher’s anger and wondered what made him act and feel that way.
2
During the ensuing weeks and months, the parents realized that their son became more in touch with people and more attuned to their feelings. When he heard a Torah discussion, he suddenly became fascinated. Within passing time, the boy learned and learned and developed into a serious young man. The flame of Torah was brightly lit within him. One day, two neighbors were arguing over the purchase of a calf. The boy went up to them and to the amazement of the neighbors, he showed them both how to be satisfied with the transaction. Before long, many adults in the village were bringing their quarrels before the boy who would be able to rule with logic and a clear head. He would also point out to them that the solutions had been in their hearts, but that over the roar of their anger could not hear. The boy grew up and became a renowned Rebbe himself who later became known as the greatest Rebbe of his generation. His talmidim once asked him, “How did you get your deep Torah insight?” He would answer, “I learnt how to study Torah from the great Rebbe, Reb Aaron of Karlin, the defining moment occurred when the Rebbe held me silently against his chest

Can a Multivitamin a Day Keep the Brain Fog Away?
French researchers1say they’ve found a definite link between vitamins and cognitive performance in 4,447 men and women between the ages of 45 and 60. Dr. Emmanuelle Kesse-Guyot of the University of Paris concluded this from the study: “Vitamins and minerals are important for memory.” She also added, however, that they aren’t as important as diet and exercise. Multivitamins Can Help Clear Mental Cobwebs The study participants were randomized into two groups. One group received a daily multivitamin while the other group received a placebo. The subjects were followed closely for eight years — meaning the researchers actually counted pills for each participant to ensure high compliance. After those eight years, the researchers stopped counting pills and left it up to the subjects to remain compliant. The study continued an additional six years. At the end of the study (14 years total), the subjects underwent the same memory tests they did at the beginning of the study. The researchers then tabulated the results and here’s what they found.
Consider The researchers involved in the study were quick to caution against overreaching conclusions. “Our results have to be considered carefully,” wrote the authors of the final report, which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Higher cognitive performance may indeed be based on a better diet; however, it may also be that people who have better thinking skills adhere to better eating habits as well, which may include taking vitamin supplements. At this point, it is hard to tell which one is the proverbial chicken and which one is the egg. What You Need to Know Brain health depends on how well you preserve nerve cell structure and communication connections as you age. This suggests two things: First, increase the amount of antioxidants in your regimen since oxidative stress is detrimental to nerve cell structure. Second, consider taking magnesium, a mineral that supports your critical nerve cells connections. If nerve cell connections fail, memory and recall become more and more difficult
• Both groups scored about the same with short-term memory although the multivitamin group did slightly better. • The multivitamin group performed far better on long-term memory tests than the placebo group. Important Points to

Leek and Potato Soup A delicious and tasty soup makes a change! Ingredients • 4 cups sliced leeks (use the white part and a bit of the tender light green part – approximately 3 medium sized leeks) • 4 cups scrubbed and diced potatoes • 7 - 8 cups water (use the lesser amount if you plan to enrich later with milk or cream) • salt to taste (at least 1½ tsp) • Black pepper • 2 Tbsp minced parsley/chives for garnish (optional) Directions 1. Clean the leeks. First remove the first layer if it is wilted. Cut off the tops at the point where the leek turns from light green to a deeper shade of green. Slice off the tip of the root, being careful to keep leaves attached. Slice the leek in half lengthwise, keeping just a bit of the root end intact so the leaves don’t separate. Wash under cold running water, separating each leaf so that the stream of water can rinse away any dirt. Then cut them into thin slices (about 1/8 inch thick). 2. Scrub the potatoes (peeling them or not is optional), and either cut them into ½ inch dice, or cut them in half and into slices no more than ¼ inch thick.
3. Add sliced leeks and potatoes to a 4-quart pot and add 7 to 8 cups of water. Bring to a simmer and add salt to taste. 4. Simmer slowly for 30 minutes, until leeks and potatoes are tender. 5. Before serving, taste and add salt and pepper to taste. If you want a more homogenized soup, you can use a stick blender to puree it. Or you can cool the soup and then puree in a food processor and reheat to serve. 6. If you want to make the soup ahead of time and serve later, prepare through Step 5. Cool the soup and then refrigerate it in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve. At that time, you can heat the soup in about 5 minutes. 7. A garnish of minced parsley or chives is both attractive and tasty.

Over Your Coffee They say... We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves. Did you know...? Texas was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845. When it was annexed in 1845, it retained the right to fly its flag at the same height as the national flag. Humor ;-)

On May 10th 2005, a Georgian terrorist named Vladimir Arutyunian attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, George W. Bush, along with the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili with a grenade. Arutyunian waited for hours in the square that the presidents would later speak at muttering to himself in a heavy leather coat. When the speeches began, Arutyunian pulled the pin on a Sovietmade RGD-5 grenade and threw it toward the crowd. Luckily the grenade was wrapped in a silk handkerchief, which for some reason prohibited it from detonating. Arutyunian escaped, but was later apprehended. When intelligence agents discovered him, a gun battle ensued in which an officer was fatally shot. Artuyunian was captured and sentenced to life in prison in Georgia and should he ever be released, he will be immediately extradited to serve time in the United States. He can currently only be released by a presidential pardon.
