What Goes Around, Comes Around Fleming was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to eke out a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death. The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman’s sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. “I want to repay you,” said the nobleman. “You saved my son’s life.” “No, I can’t accept payment for what I did,” the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer’s own son came to the door of the family hovel. “Is

that your son?” the nobleman asked. “Yes,” the farmer replied proudly. “I’ll make you a deal. Let me take him and give him a good education. If the lad is anything like his father, he’ll grow to a man you can be proud of.” And that he did. In time, Farmer Fleming’s son graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the nobleman’s son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin. The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill. His son’s name? Sir Winston Churchill. Someone once said what goes around comes around. And now you know...

The Truth about Gluten Sensitivities

What is a Gluten Sensitivity? Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains such as rye, barley, and spelt. It’s also an additive used in many processed foods. gluten sensitivity is believed to be an immune related-reaction. Normally your immune system produces antibodies to fight viruses or bacteria, but in a glutensensitivity reaction, antibodies may be produced against gluten. Should We All Get On the Anti-Gluten Bandwagon? Does everyone have to give up gluten? No. Simply put, most people don’t have gluten sensitivities. However, if you’re suffering from strange symptoms with an unknown cause, you may want to give it a shot. Some of the symptoms frequently reported and linked to gluten sensitivities include the following: abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, fogginess, headaches, tiredness, rashes, joint and muscle pain, leg numbness, and depression. Removing Gluten May Help You Feel Better What are the benefits of going gluten-free? For one, you might feel healthier — if you have a real sensitivity. Some of the conditions shown to improve include IBS, autism, dermatitis, and headaches.

diseases that have been associated with anti-gliadin antibodies:

• Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis • Psoriasis • Autoimmune thyroid disease • Liver disorders • Bipolar disorder • Schizophrenia • Multiple sclerosis

How does this apply to you? If you have any of these conditions, perhaps you should find out if you’re gluten sensitive. After all, it can’t really hurt to experiment with your diet a bit. Testing for Gluten Sensitivities There’s no “standard” way to diagnose a gluten sensitivity, but one common approach is to perform a food sensitivity test. This screens a sample of blood for IgG antibodies, which may be produced in response to gluten. Another way to test is to eliminate wheat and other gluten-containing foods from your diet for at least two weeks. This is probably the best way, since certain cases of gluten sensitivities are idiopathic, meaning the true cause can’t be determined. After your trial, evaluate your health. If you feel better then you may want to say goodbye to gluten, or if you don’t want to go that drastic, eat it sparingly.

Not only that but, research shows that certain diseases are associated with anti-gliadin antibodies, showing there may be a link between them and gluten sensitivities. This doesn’t mean that gluten causes these diseases, but only that it warrants further investigation. Here are some

Over Your They say... Big results require big ambitions. Did you know...? In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food. In 2006, the spending rose to nearly $142 billion. Humor ;-)

Corn originates from Central America and it’s the number one crop in the United States. The ancient people of Mexico grew maize, or corn, from a grass-like plant called teosinte. The original looks really different from corn as we know it today. The “ears” of a teosinte plant hold 8 to 10 hard-shelled seeds while ears of corn contains up to 500 soft kernels. By selecting seeds from plants with desirable traits, the ancient Mexican farmers turned the hard shell casings inside out and multiplied the kernels into the ears of corn we know and love. Though teosinte and corn look entirely different, their genomes remain very similar. The difference in their genome is only 1200 out of 50,000 genes. However we’ve modified it so much, it is now completely human dependent. That means that it can’t survive out in the wild. In order to make the crop yield more production, grow faster and just be a much better source of food, we’ve changed it so much that it’d be domed for extinction if we weren’t there to take care of it.

A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before. “You’ll get your chance in court,” said the Desk Sergeant. “No, no, no!” said the man. “I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I’ve been trying to do that for years!”

Corn has been genetically modified so much that it wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild!

the Segulah with the Power of Torah

Vaera

DANCED AT THE WEDDING A mere one day before her daughter’s wedding, as she was getting ready to escort her to the chuppah, the following story occurred to the mother of the bride.

BRILLIANT|845-782-7988

As any dedicated parent would, she was busy preparing the apartment for the future couple, moving heavy boxes of dishes and house wares, not feeling as if she was overdoing it at all. Several hours later, the pain started….she began to ache all over and each step she took became torturous. Visions of herself being unable to dance at her daughter’s wedding plagued her. So she called the office of “Kollel Chatzos” and was given the opportunity to submit two names. She presented her own name, and asked that the kollel men pray that the wedding not be ruined by her apparent injury, and that she should be able to greet her guests with a genuine smile on her face. At the same time, she gave them her daughter’s name, that the bride should merit setting up a moral and healthy home,
