Elimelech and the Blessing A bracha is a blessing... We are all familiar with the concept, but what exactly is a blessing? We Jewish people have been making blessings for thousands of years. But what is a blessing? Are we giving a blessing to Hashem for what he has given us? When we give a blessing to a friend, it’s like wishing that good things should happen to him. Is this the same towards Hashem? Can we do such a thing? What is it that Hashem lacks, that our blessing can do something? To answer these questions, there is a famous story about Rabbi Elimelech, the Rebbe of Lizhensk who lived about two hundred years ago. Another Rabbi came to visit Rabbi Elimelech, who was known far and wide for being a Tzaddik. They sat together conversing. The visiting Rabbi, who was a distinguished scholar, had nevertheless not yet achieved the level of holiness and saintliness that Rabbi Elimelech had reached. “Tell me, Rabbi Elimelech, we both are scholars, well versed in the halacha. Yet you have reached a level of saintliness and holiness far beyond me. Explain to me, please, what is the difference between us? What is it that you possess that I don’t?”

Rabbi Elimelech pointed to the bowl of fruit, set before them on the table. “When you want to eat an apple, do you make a blessing to Hashem?” “Certainly I do!” the visiting Rabbi answered. “Ah, that’s the difference. You see, when I want to make a blessing to Hashem, I eat an apple. When you want to eat an apple you first make a blessing. That is the difference.” What this story is coming to tell us is that blessing is a method that we can use to become close to the creator of the world. True, it thanks Him for His goodness. But it can also bring us to a higher level of consciousness in being aware of Hashem. The visiting Rabbi used the blessing to thank Hashem for His goodness, which is quite acceptable and commendable. But Rabbi Elimelech used the blessing in a different way. He used it to get close to his Creator. The apple was just a medium for being able to do this. We too, when we have the opportunity to recite a blessing, we can use it to increase our awareness of the Supreme Power of the universe. The more blessings we make, the more we can increase our awareness. That’s the point of making a blessing. It is like we do something for Hashem; we cause him to be with us down here on earth instead of hidden up there in the heavens.

Health The anti-inflammatory supplements This is the final installment on the issue of chronic low-grade inflammation. We will discuss the basic supplements that target inflammation. There are many more supplements that are anti-inflammatory and if you want to treat a specific condition, different anti-inflammatory compounds may be advised, as well as higher doses than those typically used for healthy individuals. Fish oil / Omega 3 As we have discussed in our article on diet and inflammation, omega 3 fatty acids are central in the prevention and treatment of inflammation. The majority of us do not get enough of the omega 3’s in our diet, which makes this a vital supplement to add to our regimen on a daily basis. It is really one of the most powerful supplements in combating virtually all inflammatory conditions ranging from heart disease, arthritis, skin conditions, Crohn’s, and everything in between. For prevention, 2 capsules a day may be enough, but for treatment of inflammatory conditions, six to nine capsules a day may need to be taken for six to 18 month. It may sound extreme, but unlike most supplements, like vitamins and minerals which are just chemicals and have to get into our blood stream and into our cells, omega 3 is a fat, and we have to shift our body composition from unhealthy fats to healthy ones. This process can take a long time especially after years of unhealthy fat consumption. Vitamin D Vitamin D also has anti-inflammatory properties and should be taken by everyone on a daily basis. For daily use, it’s recommended to take 5000iu. However for those with strong inflammatory conditions, more may be needed as determined by a blood test. Multi vitamin Studies show that you reduce your CRP levels -- an inflammatory marker -- merely by taking a daily multi vitamin and mineral.

5 Solutions for Removing Sweat Stains Summer again! And with all the fun, there is one aspect of it that can sometimes be frustrating. What to do about the sweat stains when you really don’t want to throw away a perfectly good outfit you’ve been out in the sun with? 1. Aspirin Before you give up all hope of ever getting that perspiration stain out of a good white dress shirt, try this: Crush two aspirins and mix the powder in 1/2 cup warm water. Soak the stained part of the garment in the solution for two to three hours. 2. Baking Soda Pre-treating clothes with a paste made from 4 tablespoons baking soda and 1/4 cup warm water can help vanquish a variety of stains. For example, rub it into shirts to remove perspiration stains; for really bad stains, let the paste dry for about two hours before washing. Rub out tar stains by applying the paste and washing in plain baking soda. For collar stains, rub in the paste and add a bit of vinegar as you’re putting the

shirt in the wash. 3. Lemons Avoid expensive dry-cleaning bills. You can remove unsightly underarm stains from shirts and blouses simply by scrubbing them with a mixture of equal parts lemon juice (or2white vinegar) and water. 4. Salt Salt’s the secret to getting rid of those stubborn yellow perspiration stains on shirts. Dissolve 4 tablespoons salt in 1 quart (1 liter) hot water. Just sponge the garment with the solution until the stain disappears. 5. Vinegar Want to see those sweat marks disappear from shirts and other garments? Just pour a bit of vinegar directly onto the stain, and rub it into the fabric before placing the item in the wash. You can also remove deodorant stains from your washable shirts and blouses by gently rubbing the spot with undiluted vinegar before laundering.
