The human mind and Torah law Rabbi Yechezkel Landau, the famed author of Nodah B’Yhudah, served as the rabbi of Prague from 1754 to 1793. Once, a group of scholars who wished to contest his rabbinic qualifications presented him with a series of questions in halacha. These fictitious “cases” were carefully constructed to be as complex and as misleading as possible, so as to ensnare the rabbi in their logical traps and embarrass him with an incorrect ruling. Rabbi Yechezkel succeeded in resolving all the questions correctly -- all, that is, but one. Immediately his detractors pounced on him, showing how his verdict contradicts a certain principle of Torah law. Rabbi Yechezkel responded, “I am certain that this case is not actually relevant, and that you have invented it in order to embarrass me!” “How do I know?” the rabbi continued. “Because I know that Hashem’s Torah is true. You see, whenever a human being is called upon to decide a matter of Torah law, we are faced with a paradox: how can the human mind possibly determine what is Hashem’s will? The laws of Torah are the wisdom and will of Hashem and the most basic laws of reality, preceding and superseding even the laws of nature. How is it that the finite and error-prone intellect is authorized to decide such Divine absolutes?

“But the Torah itself instructs that ‘the Torah is not in heaven’ but has been given to man to study and comprehend; and that whenever a question or issue of Torah law is raised, it is the human being, employing his finite knowledge and judgment, who must render a ruling. In other words, when a person puts aside all considerations of self and totally surrenders his mind to serve the Torah, Hashem guarantees that the result would be utterly consistent with His will. “However,” concluded Rabbi Yechezkel, “this ‘guarantee’ only applies to actual events, when a rabbi is called upon to determine what it is that G-d desires to be done under a given set of circumstances; but not if his personal honor is the only issue at hand. Had you presented me with a relevant question, I know that I would not have erred, since I approached the matter with no interest or motive other than to serve to will of Hashem. But since your case was merely a hypothetical question designed to mislead me, my mind was just like every other mind, great and small alike -- imperfect and vulnerable to manipulation.” Note: This Friday - Iyar 16 on the Jewish calendar - marks the 217th anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Yechezkel Landau in 1793.

Health Soluble fiber; additional benefits This is a continuation of our previous article regarding the amazing health properties of soluble fiber, where we focused mainly on its beneficial effects on our metabolism as it relates to weight loss and blood sugar regulation. Today we will focus on its benefits to our digestive system. Normalizes bowel movements This may sound like an oxymoron but soluble fiber helps constipation as well as loose bowls. When it comes to constipation, dietary fiber, especially soluble fiber, increases the weight and size of your stool and softens it. A bulky stool is easier to pass, decreasing your chance of constipation. On the contrary, if you have loose, watery stools, fiber may help to solidify the stool because it absorbs water and adds bulk to stool. For some, fiber may provide relief from irritable bowel syndrome. Pre-biotic Some may assume the above caption is a typo. After all, isn’t it called probiotic? Probiotics are the good bacteria which populate our intestines. There health benefits are numerous, from digestive health to immune health as well as helping us produce certain critical nutrients like vitamin K2. Just like any living thing, these bacterias need food. This is where soluble fiber comes in. Soluble fiber is food for the good bacteria in our digestive tract, hence the name prebiotic. The SCT’s (Short-Chain fatty Acids) Short-Chain fatty acids are the byproduct of the bacteria fermenting the soluble fiber. These SCT’s have many health benefits and may be the reason why high fiber diets have proven to be good for our health. One of the most studied SCT is Butyrate. Butyrate has anti-inflammatory effects, increases insulin sensitivity, and may delay the development of neurodegenerative diseases. It may also be helpful in the treatment of diseases of the colon

such as Crohn’s, IBS or ulcerative colitis. Studies show the more fiber we consume the higher the levels of Butyrate in our bodies. The most soluble fiber known is called Konjac Glucomannan. It can absorb up to 200 times its amount in water. Note: 1. Soluble fiber should be introduced slowly as not to cause digestive discomfort. 2. Drink at least 8 oz of water when consuming soluble fibers. 3. Because of its nature to slow digestion its best not to take with medication or supplements. Take the medication either 1 hour ahead or 2/3 of an hour after ingesting the fiber.

The Ultimate Cheesecake With the long afternoon Shabbosim during this time of year, most of us are already six hours after the afternoon meal by the time shalosh seudaos rolls around. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing like a slice of rich, creamy cheesecake to give your third Shabbos meal that special touch. Have an oneg Shabbos! Ingredients: Crust; 15 graham crackers, crushed 2 tablespoons butter, melted Filling; 4 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese 1 1/2 cups white sugar 3/4 cup milk 4 eggs 1 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9-inch springform pan. In a medium bowl, mix graham cracker crumbs with melted butter. Press onto bottom of springform pan. In a large bowl, mix cream cheese with sugar until smooth. Blend in milk, and then mix in the eggs one at a time, mixing just enough to incorporate. Mix in sour cream, vanilla and flour until smooth. Pour filling into prepared crust. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour. Turn the oven off, and let cake cool in oven with the door closed for 5 to 6 hours; this prevents cracking. Chill in refrigerator until serving.
