Room for the Important Things in Life A professor of philosophy stood before a class of students and placed several items on the desk in front of him. Wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about two inches in diameter.

Health The Fat That Burns Fat Up until recently, scientists believed that it was present only in infants, and gradually disappeared as people grew older. Recent scientific research however, proves that it does exist in human adults. It’s called brown fat. While most of the fat in the body is comprised of white adipose tissue (WAT), there is a very small amount of brown adipose tissue, or brown fat, present as well. This information is of significance because these fats are fundamentally different from each other. White fat in excess is harmful to our health and is the primary cause behind many of the major diseases that are plaguing our society. White fat is metabolically a lazy fat, which means it doesn’t use a lot of energy and does not burn many calories. It just sits there like a fat blob, because its purpose is to stash away reserves of energy for times of famine. This was great when food shortage was a problem, but in today’s era, it turns out to be the problem. In contrast, brown fat is active tissue and burns a lot of energy. In fact, scientists believe it is more closely related to muscle tissue, which are also metabolically active. Brown fat, when stimulated, will actually take fat from fat cells and burn it as energy. Brown fat is thermogenic, which means it has a warming effect. Infants and animals that have lots of these fats don’t shiver when it’s chilly, as these fats protect them from the cold. It is also believed that brown fat gives the skin a better structure and may be part of the reason why our skin loses structure as we age. So where do you get some of this fat? Are brown fat supplements available in health food stores? The answer is no. However, there is a very interesting way to stimulate this fat in our

body. The method is called non-shivering cold exposure, which basically means exposing yourself to cold that you can tolerate without shivering. This will spur your brown fat cells to create heat to warm your body and thus burn more calories. In a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists divided subjects into three groups. The first group was given the drug Ephedrine, the second was given a placebo injection, and the third were fitted with vests with cold, 57 degrees water running through them. Both the drug and the cooling vests caused an equal increase in the number of calories burned. Another way to stimulate brown fat cells is through exercise.
