In the right time We may at times perceive certain events in our life as “bad” or as “difficult”. However, there can be many reasons why happenings do or do not occur. Sometimes, a reason may be that simply the right time is yet to ensue. The atmosphere was serene. The singing was harmonious. The Chuppah was taking place under the studded Yerushalayim night. The Choson was standing on the right side. The Kallah on the left side. She had just finished circling her husband to be as the last strains of Mi Adar died down on the lips of the assembled. Everyone was waiting with anticipation for that moment. The Choson placed his hand in his pocket to withdraw the Kiddishun ring yet his frantic expression confirmed that the Kiddishun ring was not residing on him. His mother and father hurriedly checked their own belongings but to no avail. Finally, someone was sent to retrieve the ring from the Mechutonim’s house and returned breathless, ring in hand.

2

The Choson smiled gratefully; anxious to place the ring on his Kallah’s hand. However, as he slowly placed the ring onto his Kallah’s finger, his shaking hands dropped it. The ring gave a tinkle and with lightning speed it rolled away. People tried to stop the ring in its tracks yet impervious to all, it landed into a nearby sewer. The task now was no easy feat as everyone tried to retrieve the ring. The Brisker Rav was present at the Chuppah and one of the spectators approached him and exclaimed, “These happenings do not represent a good sign!” The Brisker Rav replied vehemently, “Chas VaShalom, each and every Chuppah has an exact moment from Above that it is supposed to happen. Over here, the right moment has just not yet come and that is why this Chuppah has got so farshlepped!” So, next time you “wait for 4 hours for gas in line”, only to be told we are “out of GAS”, perhaps think that maybe the right time has not yet arrived!

Health

Health Rules You Can Break

Mother Wasn’t Always Right You’ve heard them before: Eat your veggies. Get eight hours of sleep each night. Don’t cross your eyes, or they’ll stay that way. Many health rules are grounded in science and should be followed as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle, but others? Not so much. Here are some popular rules that aren’t as hard-and-fast as you might think. Don’t Crack Your Knuckles The myth is that this habit will cause arthritis. It may be annoying, but no medical studies prove cracking or popping your fingers will lead to arthritis. However, some doctors say cracking your knuckles repeatedly may hurt your fingers in other ways, so it’s best to avoid the habit. Ever wondered where the popping sound comes from? When you stretch your fingers you pull the bones, creating an air bubble around the joints. When the bubble bursts, it makes the cracking noise. Don’t Go Outside With Wet Hair It may make you feel chilly (wet hair doesn’t insulate well), but it won’t make you sick. Colds are caused by a virus that is usually spread by droplets from someone’s cough or sneeze. To avoid the virus, you’re better off washing your hands often and avoiding crowded places or close contact with someone who’s sick. What does make you more vulnerable to a cold virus: fatigue, stress, and certain bad allergies.

Water a Day As long as you’re drinking enough so that you don’t feel thirsty, you urinate often, and your urine is nearly colorless, you’re probably getting enough water. And remember that magic “eight glasses a day” includes water you get from foods and other beverages, and those help you gain other nutrients, too. While water is necessary, some healthy alternatives to water include broth-based soups and waterladen produce such as grapes, cucumbers, and melon. Avoid Reading in Dim Light You may get a headache and strain your eyes, but experts say poor lighting will not cause permanent damage to your eyesight. Ditto for sitting too close to a computer screen. To reduce eye strain, sit at a comfortable distance and take breaks often—at least every 20 minutes. Get Good Health Advice While some of the older wisdom isn’t so wise, there are plenty of good health advice out there, from what foods your body needs to work its best to important exercise to keep you feeling young.

Over Your Coffee They say...

Hummingbirds have the fastest metabolism

They succeed, because they think they can.

Hummingbirds are one of the smallest species of bird in the world with the average size measuring only 3-5 inches. The record for the smallest bird in history is actually a species of the hummingbird called the Bee Hummingbird, which averaged only 5-cm! These birds are amazing for several reasons, including their size and the speed at which they move their wings, but one aspect most people don’t know about them is that they are almost always just hours away from starving to death! The reason they do this is because of the speed of their wings, which beat 12-80 times every second. The strange part is that they are not starving because they don’t consume food as many would assume, but rather because they burn it off so fast. With a heart rate reaching 1,260 beats per minute they have the fastest metabolism of any animal. They consume up to double their own weight in nectar each day, yet move so much for their size that they simply burn it off extremely quickly and nearly starve until they eat again!

Did you know...?
