The Dollmaker The kindly old Doll Maker lived in a quaint little village upon the coast of Italy. Each day would find him immersed in the task of creating dolls. His goal in life, to make all the little girls in the world joyful! Though ancient in years, he made sure to keep up with the latest trends and constructed speaking dolls that could say “mama, that could cry and even stand up on their own and wink. The Doll Maker, being extremely astute and wise sensed that his time on this world was slowly ebbing and with special resolve in his heart he set out to make the most beautiful, delightful creation. He took to work and designed a doll. He bestowed her with gorgeous thick brown long tresses which he felt

bespoke great beauty. He slowly formed the bluest of blue eyes which one could gaze into forever. He gave this special doll long graceful legs with which she could dance, run and play. Her fingers too were long and slender and her hands were strong and polished. With these wonderful assets, the Doll Maker anticipated that she would provide comfort to those around her. Her looks were attractive and pretty and he planned this so that doll would recognize the beauty in others. He dressed her in a shimmery sparkling gown with dazzling jewels and on the last day when she was finally completed, he lifted her up with great care and set her tenderly in front of a

Omega-3 supplementation improves

The journal PLOS One published an article on October 3, 2012 that reveals a benefit for supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids on working memory in young men and women. University of Pittsburgh researchers led by Rajesh Narendran of the Department of Radiology tested the effects of a supplement providing 930 milligrams eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 750 milligrams docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in 11 men and women between the ages of 18 and 25. Evaluation of working memory (via an “n-back test”), positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of the brain and tests for red blood cell fatty acid levels were conducted before and after the six month treatment period. Participants experienced an increase in plasma omega-3 fatty acid levels and improvement in working memory at the end of six months. “What was particularly interesting about the presupplementation n-back test was that it correlated positively with plasma omega-3,”observed Bita Moghaddam, whose lab conducted the research. “This means that the omega-3s they were getting from their diet already positively correlated with their working memory.” “Before seeing this data, I would have said it was impossible to move young healthy individuals above their cognitive best,” he remarked. “We found that members of this population can enhance their working memory performance even further, despite their already being at the top of their cognitive game.”

results failed to support the hypothesis. “It is really interesting that diets enriched with omega-3 fatty acid can enhance cognition in highly functional young individuals,” Dr Narendran commented. “Nevertheless, it was a bit disappointing that our imaging studies were unable to clarify the mechanisms by which it enhances working memory.”

“So many of the previous studies have been done with the elderly or people with medical conditions, leaving this unique population of young adults unaddressed,” coauthor Matthew F. Muldoon noted. “But what about our highest-functioning periods? Can we help the brain achieve its full potential by adapting our healthy behaviors in our young adult life? We found that we absolutely can.”

Although the researchers had suggested increases in dopamine storage and a protein involved in decision making in a particular area of the brain as mechanisms supporting omega3’s effect on cognitive function, PET scan

Cream Cheese Cookies A light snack full of tasty treats to make you smile on a cold winter’s day… 1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter (room temperature) 3 oz. Regular Cream Cheese (room temperature) 1 ½ Cups Confectioner’s Sugar 1/2 tsp Baking Powder 1 Egg (room temperature) 1/2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract 1 ¾ Cups All - Purpose Flour Directions: Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees and line your cookie sheets with parchment paper. Place the butter and cream cheese in your mixing bowl and beat for 1 minute. Beat in the sugar and baking powder. Add the egg and vanilla extract and ‘beat until fluffy.’ Beat in the flour. Chill the mixture for 30 minutes for drop/roll cookies or for one hour for cut-out cookies. Scoop by rounded teaspoon full and dredge drop cookies (roll balled cookies) in superfine sugar. Bake for 7 minutes and cool for 1 minute on cookie sheet and then transfer to wire racks to cool completely. Yields: Approximately 2 dozen dropped or rolled cookies. The yield on cut-outs will depend on how big the shapes are (baking time remains the same). The cutouts should be about 1/4 inch thick.

Over Your Coffee They say... Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones. Did you know...?

This little guy is always ready for a costume party. The mimic octopus lives in the tropical sea of Southeast Asia and was not discovered officially until 1988probably because it was too busy looking like a string ray, or a flounder, or a jellyfish, or any of the other 15 creatures it can shape-shift into. The most other octopuses can is blend into the sea floor to appear as rocks The mimic octopus grows up to 2 feet in length and its normal coloring consists of brown and white stripes or spots. Based on observations, the mimic octopus may decide which animal to transform into based on local predators. For example, when the octopus saw a damselfish in the distance, it was observed to appear as a banded sea snake; a damselfish’s predator. It did this by turning black and yellow, burying six of its arms, and waving its other two arms in opposite directions.

Chocolate has evolved into such a massive industry that between 40 and 50 million people depend on cacao for their livelihood. Over 3.8 million tons of cacao beans are produced per year.

A mimic Octopus can change into more than 15 different shapes!
