The question that should not be answered A natural question, why? This comes to mind especially when such a terrible tragedy as Hurricane Sandy has hit us. We cannot stop ourselves from asking and from thinking; WHY? There was once a terrible calamity in Camp Ohr Shraga. One of the very prominent Roshei Yeshivah stood up and commenced a fiery speech in which he declared that the tragedy occurred because of Bitul Torah. The listeners were extremely shaken by the Rosh Yeshivah’s words. However, Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky stood up and approached the Rosh Yeshivah and asked, “Are you a prophet?” He answered, “no!” “So are you a Baal Ruach Hakodesh?” Rabbi Yaakov persisted. Again the Rosh Yeshivah answered “no!” Rabbi Yaakov went on, “do you know why this has happened? If you are correct that it is because of Bitual Torah, then that is fine. However, what if you are wrong? This could

create untrue feelings of guilt among the family of this victim! They may come to think that if only we could have learned more, if only, then perhaps we could have prevented this terrible tragedy.” Rabbi Yaakov continued with a strong voice and said, “I would ask the family for forgiveness for the unnecessary pain that you may have caused them!” Right thereafter Rabbi Yaakov got up and expounded a potent and inspiring speech about… Bitul Torah! In reality, we do not have to or need to know “why precisely” anything happens. Chazal teach us that when something bad happens to us, our family, friends or Klal Yisroel we must all take a closer look within ourselves and find what needs correcting and think how we can all become better people, closer to Hashem and his Torah. Chazal do not tell us to look for something to blame or try to find reasons why, rather look deep within and use those very occurrences as stepping stones to achieve higher heights! Healthy Living Adds Fourteen Years to Your Life, Study Suggests

If you have optimal heart health in middle age, you may live up to 14 years longer, free of cardiovascular disease, than your peers who have two or more cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study. The study was published Nov. 5 in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). “We found that many people develop cardiovascular disease as they live into old age, but those with optimal risk factor levels live disease-free longer,” said John T. Wilkins, M.D., first author of the study. “We need to do everything we can to maintain optimal risk factors so that we reduce the chances of developing cardiovascular disease and increase the chances that we’ll live longer and healthier.” Wilkins is an assistant professor in medicine, cardiology and preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a cardiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. For the study, researchers pulled data from five different cohorts included in the

Cardiovascular Lifetime Risk Pooling Project and looked at the participants’ risk of all forms of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular disease from ages 45, 55 and 65 through 95 years of age. All participants were free of CVD at entry into the study and data on the following risk factors was collected: blood pressure, total cholesterol, diabetes and smoking status. The primary outcome measure for the study was any CVD event (including fatal and nonfatal coronary heart disease, all forms of stroke, congestive heart failure, and other CVD deaths). Key results from the study: Individuals with optimal risk factor profiles lived up to 14 years longer free of total CVD than individuals with at least two risk factors. Men in middle age had lifetime risks of approximately 60 percent for developing cardiovascular disease. Women in middle age had lifetime risks of approximately 56 percent for developing cardiovascular disease. Lifetime risks for cardiovascular disease were strongly associated with risk factor burden in middle age.

Red and Green Quiche Bites Quick ‘n’ easy yields mouth-watering ‘n’ cheesy! Hands-On Time: 10 minutes Ready In: 20 minutes Yields: 12 mini-quiches

Ingredients:

1 single pie crust (a store-bought shell works fine or your own recipe) 1 large egg 1 tbsp sour cream 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese 2 tbsp each of red and green pepper chopped fine 1 tbsp green onion - green tops only A pinch of salt

Directions:

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees - grease a mini muffin tin with 12 cups. Roll out dough to a 1/8-inch thickness and cut into a 8 x 6-inch rectangle. Then cut into twelve 2-inch squares. (This can be done with a store-bought

shell, but let thaw first if frozen.) Fit squares of dough into muffin tins and set aside. Combine egg, sour cream, Parmesan cheese, peppers, onion and salt. Blend well. Spoon a teaspoon of the mixture into each dough-lined muffin cup. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until eggs puffs and dough is lightly browned at the edges. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from the tins. Serve and revel in the tasty result!

There are few people with brown eyes who don’t wonder what they would look like with another color. Some people take this further and purchase different colored contacts to change their eye color, but nothing has ever been permanent…until now. A doctor in Laguna Beach California claims he can use laser technology to change brown eyes to blue for the rest of someone’s life without any damage to vision. Dr. Greg Homer, who developed the procedure, says it can be done because everyone technically has blue eyes underneath their brown layer of pigment. He said all they do is take a laser and tune it to a certain frequency to remove the brown pigment, which in total takes about twenty seconds! The body slowly sheds the tissue that was altered from the laser, which takes about two or three weeks, and the brown tissue is never able to regenerate. The procedure costs about $5,000, which can’t exactly be considered cheap for a twenty-second operation.
