The Widow and the Wheat The Midrash relates the story of a widow who used to bake four loaves of bread every day. She would keep one loaf for herself and the rest she would hand out to the poor. On one particular day, a poor man knocked on her door in obvious distress. He told her hadn’t eaten for days and had no money to buy food. Perhaps she could give him something to eat? Of course she could! So she gave him one loaf of bread. No sooner had she closed the door that there was another knock. It was another man with a similar story of desperate poverty, and so, the second loaf of bread went for charity. This scene repeated itself another time, and she gave away the third loaf. Then, however, a fourth person in need arrived at her door… and she gave him her very last loaf.

This was obviously a question for the Rabbis and so she headed for the shul to hear their perspective. To be continued…

With no bread left for herself, the widow was forced to return to the mill to grind more flour. She took a leather sack, filled it with wheat, and headed towards the mill. This was a watermill, built next to the river, and as

the woman walked towards the river, tragedy struck. A powerful wind came and whipped the sack abruptly from her hands. She ran after it, but soon watched in horror as the billowing wind blew her sack over the river and deposited it in the water. The currents soon carried her precious sack away, and the widow stood at the edge of the river, stunned, bitter, and thinking, Why did this happen to me? I gave away my very last loaf of bread for charity and now I’m left with nothing.

Wat er Water makes up most of our bodies’ composition; we are 60-70% water. We can’t live without water. It’s crucial for every single function in our body. Though water is available in abundance, some people still walk around with chronic lowlevel dehydration. When your body does not have enough water, it won’t function optimally, and you will experience fatigue, brain fog and headaches. In addition, being chronically dehydrated may contribute over time to more serious diseases and conditions. Why are some people dehydrated? There may be many reasons why people don’t consume enough water: 1. Some people are so busy, they simply don’t find the time to drink enough water. Listen to your body and make sure drinking water is always readily available. 2. Some people confuse thirst for hunger, and instead of drinking more water they may gravitate towards food unintentionally. So when you feel hungry, try to take a cup of water instead of food. 3. Caffeinated drinks. Drinking caffeinated beverages like coffee and coke will not help much in hydrating you, as caffeine has the tendency to flush water out of our bodies. 4. Exercise and excessive heat requires us to drink more. Water is our best option. As we have stated before, drinks that contain caffeine are not good for proper hydration unless you make up for it with drinking more water. Alcoholic beverages have the same effect as the caffeinated ones. Sweetened beverages are also not a good idea as they have deleterious effects on our health. Water then, is our best option. Other drinks that may suffice are unsweetened caffeine-free tea or decaffeinated coffee. What is the best kind of water to drink? Just drinking water straight from the faucet may have some downsides as it can be contaminated with many different kinds of unhealthy substances. Bottled water, though possibly better than tap water, may contain chemicals leeched inside from the plastic. That is especially true if it

has been exposed to the heat, the sun, or has been in the bottle for a long time. The best and most economical option is a water filter. If you don’t have that, certainly drinking tap water is still better than getting dehydrated. How much should you drink The general recommendation is eight glasses (containing eight ounces of water) a day. This may be enough for some individuals but not enough for others. There are also many variables that may influence your need for more water i.e. how much you weigh, what you eat, if you work out or are being exposed to heat that makes you sweat. Some medications and some medical conditions may also require you to drink more. The best thing is to listen to your body. A healthy person can usually feel when the body needs more water, but don’t wait until you’re very thirsty.
