'Naegok-dong private residence' suspect, Kim In-jong past Chief of Security Service appeals '내곡동 사저 의혹' 김인종 前경호처장 항소 By Shim Soo-ah
Kim In-jong(68), the past Blue House Chief of Presidential Security Service who was sentenced to *imprisonment for causing national loss in the process of buying president Lee Myung-bak's 'Naegok-dong private *residence,' protested against the sentence and *appealed. The court announced on the 16th that Kim In-jong and advisor of the Blue House Security Service Kim Tae-hwan(58) appealed to the Seoul Central District Court on the 14th.
Kim In-jong and Kim Taehwan were *sentenced to imprisonment for 1 year and 6 months and *probation for 3 years. The *real estate market came to a state of *lull due to the Lunar New Year’s holidays and the beneficiaries waiting for the *acquisition tax reduction bill that has been delayed. Sellers have lowered the real estate price, resulting in Seoul showing overall signs of decrease in price. According to a real estate information company (www. serve.co.kr), on the second week of February, Seoul’s *fluctuation rate of market and fluctuation rate of *rental
deposits both turned out to be 0.02%. The market stayed quiet during the holidays as only limited inquiries for purchase occurred and no significant *transactions took place. Still the sellers lowered the real estate price, continuing the decreasing *trend in price. Considering the fluctuation rate of separate districts in Seoul, Seongbuk-gu ranked highest in decrease of price, followed by Dongdaemungu, Mapo-gu, Gwangjin-

Read it if you haven’t already: Freakonomics 다시 읽어보는 괴짜경제학 By Lee Seung-kon
Freakonomics provides creative and insightful ways of viewing phenomena of the world in economic terms. It critically assesses conventional wisdom and stereotypes. The main idea of this book is that there is a hidden side to everything and that nothing should be taken at face value. This book takes a set of different episodes and analyzes them in an economic viewpoint. For instance, a chapter of this book illustrates the gangster world and the market for drugs. It seems ironic to imagine
gangsters living with their mothers because after all, drug dealing is a lucrative business. People tend to think more towards American Gangster’s Denzel Washington, who stars as Frank Lucas, an incredibly successful American gangster dealing drugs called “Blue Magic.” The authors of Freakonomics argue that such portrayals represent only the top 1% of the gangster population. In fact, the great majority of gangsters are “foot soldiers” which barely make any money and take all but take
the risk of getting caught by the police or shot at by rival gangs. In order to become a gangster king, every gangster has to start off as a foot soldier, hence a large amount of gangsters live (with their mothers) in poverty. This episode illustrates the following economic theory: when there are a lot of people willing and able to do a job, that job generally doesn’t pay well. This is one of four meaningful factors that determine a wage. The others are “the specialized skills a job requires, the unpleasantness of a job, and the
demand for services that the job fulfills.” Freakonomics provides easy-to-understand economic lessons by applying theories to everyday life encounters. School teachers and sumo wrestlers cheating, Ku Klux Klan and real estate agents exploiting others, the effect of capital punishment on crime, the effects of parenting and naming on children are issues that don’t necessarily seem to be directly linked to everyday life. Freakonomics states that you need not stress yourself on giving your child a popular

Reeva Steenkamp's last wish for her family before she was shot dead at boyfriend Oscar Pistorius' home was for them to watch her in a reality TV show that went on air in South Africa on Saturday night, two days after her killing. The country was rocked Thursday when news broke of Steenkamp's shooting death at the upscale house of the star athlete. Pistorius was arrested and charged with her murder and remains in custody in a police station. His family has strongly denied prosecutors' claims that he murdered her.
Steenkamp's family said earlier Saturday that it had not been contacted by either the SABC South Africa's national broadcaster - or the show's producers for permission to air it, but were not opposed to it because Reeva wanted everyone to see it. SABC aired the reality show on its main channel, which prominently featured Steenkamp. Steenkamp was known in South Africa for appearing in commercials and as a bikiniclad model in men's magazines. Steenkamp, a 29-year-old blonde model who graduated from law
school, died after suffering four gunshot wounds, police said. Officers recovered a 9-mm pistol from Pistorius' house and quickly charged the Olympian with murder for Steenkamp's killing. Pistorius will appear in court Tuesday for a bail hearing, something police have said they oppose. Honest Carbonara
까르보나라를 아시나요

There are galactic amounts of pasta restaurants in this country, but few of them serve genuine carbonara. Most places splurge cheese into cream. It’s nice, but do you want nice?
Yolk. Bacon. Garlic. Butter. No, you do not want nice. You want AMAZING. Most people who grow up in Korea believe that carbonara is cream sauce. Today I will resist this nonsense and tell you the truth. It’s made out of egg: beautiful, golden, thick, and rich. In defense of cream and cheese, the flavor is smooth and tasty. But it’s not egg.
If you can’t find a restaurant nearby that serves egg carbonara, make it at home. Q) You’ve never home cooked before? ☞ Don’t be boring. Try something new. Q) You’ve never cooked pasta? ☞ Then it’s time to learn. Pasta is good for two reasons: 1) It’s easy to make. 2) There won’t be many dishes to wash. Make carbonara with egg. Do it for freedom. Do it for justice. Do it for peace and prosperity or whatever reason you can find that will cancel out your lame excuse not to. 한국에서 찾아보기 힘든 계란으로 만든 ‘진짜’ 까르보나라는 크림파스타와는 다른 풍부한 맛을 가 지고 있다.

Spaghetti Carbonara (Egg) / 스파게티 까르보나라 (계란) Preparation time: 5 minutes / 준비시간: 5분 Cook time: 10 minutes / 요리시간: 10분 Total time: 15 minutes / 총 소요시간: 15분
Instructions: Cut bacon into whatever size you want. Just remember it shrinks when you cook it. Mince two cloves of garlic. Slice one.
Throw in garlic. Stir and toss once or twice a minute. When garlic slices start to brown, turn down heat to medium-low. Continue to stir or toss.

In a large pot, boil water on high heat. 냄비에 물을 끓인다.
While waiting, separate egg yolks and whites into two bowls. Add 1-2 tablespoons of parmesan cheese into yolk bowl. Mix. Add tablespoon of butter to yolk mixture. Turn pan heat on high. Dump in bacon. No need to add oil. Stir often. When bacon is slightly crisp, turn heat down to medium. Add a tablespoon of olive oil. OR
When pasta is ready, make sure you save half a cup of pasta water before draining and dumping pasta into the pan. You can add this to your pasta if it becomes too dry later. Dear Stranger, Two years are long and *irreplaceable. Had you not come here, you would be reading a book, watching a movie, or having a drink with good friends. At least I would, though you may be different. Life away from the one before can be cold and *unforgiving. Responsibilities may chip you, bleed you, destroy you bit by bit, turning bruises into *fractures, cuts into *gashes. Hang in. Don't let your shoulders break. Bring change not because you want, but because others need. It’s like walking in rain. Everything happens drop by drop. Nobody wants it to pour before reaching cover. Recycle and reconstruct. If you want a revolution, know that you are not the only one at stake. Change will come. So roll the dice *sparingly. Your words and actions can harm loved ones, even if you don't love them yet. You were given the ability to smile. No matter how sad, angry, or empty you think you feel, you have that capability. The stranger beside you also carries this debt. The hardest aspect of your new life is adapting to new people, accepting their ways, their actions, and their mistakes. Accept their ways, for one day, there will come a time when others adapt to yours. Everything has consequences—even thoughts. Like me, you will forget this more than you want to. If something troubles you, talk. If it’s something you can handle, suck it up. It really is that simple. Know that your march will end, but not without sweat. At times you will feel weak, but never be in front of those you must lead. Always be strong, and if you can't, pretend to be one among. 2013 is the year of the snake. More specifically, it is the year of the black snake. In Chinese characters, this is symbolized as “癸巳,” or “Kye-Sah.” So what’s so special about the black snake? Has Your Ideal Spouse Changed? By Lee Jae-sung
Matchmaking has been the dominant method to find the right spouse with similar background. Although Korea is a free society where individuals feeling and opinion are accepted, people still take conservative stance on marriage. However changing society is unavoidably leading to changing marriage in Korea. According to one of the most flourishing matchmaking agencies 가연, the tendency of ideal future spouse continuously change with the nation’s growing economic power. In comparison to late 1990s, ideal spouse now must possess economic advantage. Before IMF crisis in late 1990s, holding degrees from prestigious universities ensured some level of success. However, good education is only posed as auxiliary to what ideal spouse must have. In other words, one with a great potential of success, may not afford to buy a home and cover marriage expenses. Since young
workers usually don’t have enough money, hence one’s power is often reflected on the parent’s wealth. Women’s rising status in Korean society is another changing factor of marriage. Men generally have occupied higher social positions than women because men usually were more educated. As the education gap between men and women decreases, many women take higher social positions than men today. Thus, women’s option in climbing the social status though marriage is not as popular choice as the old days. In fact some gold misses (a single woman with a good fortune and high education level) remain single as they cannot find a spouse with a level higher than them. Age is also a changing factor of marriage. Older men marrying younger women have been a norm due to men’s military service duty and Korea’s patriarchy.

Cicadas, Internationalism, and Provence: La Cigale Montmarte 프랑스 음식점 라씨갈몽마르뜨 By Kim Kyu-yup
If there is order and chaos, form and substance, I would consider La Cigale Montmarte as a place of moderate order and high substance. A friend first told me about a French bistro in Itaewon that was worth visiting. I looked up online in both Naver and google to find out that customer ratings were high. Since I had not heard of this restaurant, I visited just before evening and was greeted by the manager, Thierry Berno. I
wanted to find out three things: what makes this bistro so privately popular; when and how it was established; and which line of cuisine was primarily served. As I walked in to the restaurant I noticed the atmosphere was calm and the air nonchalant. Waiters were cleaning the tables and organizing the setting while another was drying washed cups in the bar. There is a homely sentiment in the restaurant that relaxes everyone inside. A nicely dressed man in his 30s, Thierry Berno, greeted me and we exchanged introductions. Thierry is the manager. He told me take a seat and that it would be nice to have a conversation from an outsider, after he managed several preparations. When we were seated, I asked what dishes he would recommend. He replied, “홍합 (mussels)” in Korean to which I was amazed given his pronunciation in Korean. We talked further on about various things, including the founding of this restaurant. La Cigale Montmarte was established eleven years ago. The name “La Cigale” means cicada (매미) in French, which are usually found in Southern France. Dishes were originally based on delivering the culinary culture
of the region; but eventually, the concept was expanded to include a wider variety in all over France. There is a recurring theme in this bistro that customers will find in every corner of the place: its high internationalism. The menu was written in three languages, Thierry spoke multiple languages himself, and the customers varied widely from all nations. Services were always polite and respectful. It occurred to me that this restaurant had remained so silent precisely because of its high internationalism: to overcome diverse cultural barriers, entire management was composed and soft. A dish was served. There were eleven different menus for mussels and I picked one randomly. I noticed the toppings and spices were done customarily to suit a
Korean’s taste. The mussels were boiled to achieve soft texture and keep the freshness of the ingredients. I could tell there was much experience and expertise put on. As I ate on, I asked about the chef. Theirry told me the head chef had worked all over from Barcelona, Paris, Neuchatel, Quebec, Blois, and Chinon. The head chef had studied four years in Curnonsky School, France; after which, he gained experience working in diverse setting including fine dining, bistro style, luxury brasserie, buffets, and patisseries.
