The African Festival is to take place on September 7 at the Seongbukcheon Fountain Square.

Organized by the Seongbuk Global Village Center, the festival is to take place from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the participation of 17 African embassies with offices in Seoul.

Participating embassies will showcase* traditional c u i s i n e , specialties, handicrafts and accessories at their booths. Radioactive water that leaked from the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan could affect marine life in local waters as early as next year, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology said.

The institute, affiliated with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said the contaminated water will ride on warm currents from the Japanese east coast, moving closer to the peninsula.

It further added that some of the water could move into the eastern and southern seas.

However, the fish caught in the seas will have little ill-effects on human health when eaten, the institute noted.

The institute also predicted that the contaminated water could reach the west coast of North America in four to five years and spread throughout

the Pacific Ocean in six years.

Consumers have been cutting back on fish purchases from Japan and other parts of the world due to safety concerns.

Food authorities have stated that tighter safety checks on fish from Japan and the Pacific Ocean are being carried out. So far, there have not been any cases of exceeded levels of radiation.

The 2011 tsunami resulted in thousands of tons of radioactive water discharged into the Pacific Ocean from the nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Last week, reports showed 300 tons of highly contaminated water leaked from a storage tank at the power plant, sparking concerns around the world.

Despite the economic slowdown, Korea’s overseas credit card spending hit a record high in the second quarter of this year, the Bank of Korea said on August 30.

The bank reported that around 51 percent of total payments were made with credit or debit cards between April and June.

About US$2.5 billion were spent with cards during that period, an increase of 1.6 percent from the first quarter.

The method of spending indicates travelers’ preferences, reflecting an increase in credit card use over

foreign currency, the bank said.

Meanwhile, overseas expenditures peaked at around US$10.1 billion between January and July, up 13 percent from a year ago, the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute reported.

The institute said that this is the first time the amount surpassed $10 billion.

The weakening Japanese yen and rising domestic consumer prices may have led to more vacations abroad, officials said.

Korea may attempt to initiate talks with Japan about compensation for victims of sexual slavery 한국, 일본에 ‘성노예 피해자 배상방안’ 협상 제안한다 Article by Becky Hale Translation by Choi Su-min

A possible 200,000 women were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese Imperial Army during wars that took place during the first half of the 20th century, and among such women were many Koreans.

As Japan continues to deny involvement in such atrocities*, South Korea is again considering inviting Japan to discuss the issue of giving compensation to elderly Korean women that were victims of such enslavement*.

In 2011, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea sent two letters inviting Japan to participate in talks but both letters went unanswered.

Today, there are only 56 living victims of sexual enslavement by the Japanese military in Korea and they are still waiting for their long overdue apology.

Some of these women, accompanied by other activists, protest weekly in front of the Japanese embassy, as they have done for years, but to no avail.

A treaty in 1965 absolved* Japan of wartime wrongdoings against South Koreans that were victims of sexual enslavement. For this reason as well as denial of such atrocities ever happening in connection with the Japanese Imperial Army, Japan has continued to turn the other cheek.

However, in August 2011, Korea’s Constitutional Court ruled that the foreign ministry’s apathy in attempting to obtain compensation for the victims is unconstitutional and goes against victims’ rights.

Park Hyun-ae, 56, a Seoul National University professor and current dean of the College of Nursing, has been appointed the new president of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA).

IMIA has a 34-year history of which, she is to be the second female and third Asian to assume the presidency.

Park will serve in the appointed position for a two-year term starting in 2015.

The association is “the world body for health

and biomedical informatics*” and is a “bridging organization that brings together constituent organizations and their members,” according to its website.

The decision regarding Park’s appointment was made during the World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics, held this month in Copenhagen, an event that gathers leaders in medicine and health to present research and come together with other professionals from the area.

Park has a long history with Seoul National

University, where she graduated in 1980 and where she currently works.

After graduating from SNU, she made her way to the University of Minnesota to complete two master’s degrees in 1984 and 1986, followed by a doctorate* at the same university in 1987.

As president of IMIA, Park will prepare for the next two congresses, which will take place in Sao Paulo in 2015 and Beijing in 2017.

According to President Park Geun-hye, if her plans of a “creative economy” come to fruition, the middle class’ economic state will be stronger and more stable.

The creative economy aims at putting more resources into the ITC industry, and more specifically, small and medium enterprises within that sector. It also aims to, through technological advancements, share more of Korea and its culture with the world.

In terms of helping the Korean middle class, the

economic plan intends to bolster the employment rate to 70 percent, which would translate into a stronger middle class.

Maintaining a strong middle class is extremely important for the national economy as larger numbers of people with more disposable income* translates into a stronger domestic economy with healthy demand.

In an economy currently run by conglomerates, known locally as “chaebols,” Park is zeroing in on small and medium enterprises* in an attempt

to lessen the amount of power of the small handful of ultra-wealthy individuals and disperse economic gains among the rest of the population.

With the government’s support of smaller businesses, more players in the business world stand a chance at competing with the big dogs, which will hopefully encourage more entrepreneurs to launch their business ideas and help Park’s vision become a reality.

The employment rate of those between 15 and 30 years of age has decreased yearly since 2005 and is currently just above 20 percent.

Though employment rates are low, more than 80 percent of Korea’s youth enter a university program.

So the questions stands, are students not getting jobs because they are in school or are students turning to continued education to make themselves more professionally competitive* as it is too difficult to find a job?

Regardless of the answer, high school students choosing which university to apply to will surely consider what affects a degree from a certain institution will have on their marketability when they try to enter the job market.

Uniqlo aims to boost business through new line of products

A Uniqlo renewal store was opened in Apgujeong with a strengthened line-up of high-end* products to boost the brand as a leading flagship store.

A Japanese global SPA group, Uniqlo reopened its Apgujeong store with a new interior on August 30.

The company introduced a new product line of cashmere and silk to take a share of the rapidly changing fashion market in one of Korea’s most popular fashion districts, home to many boutiques and luxury brand shops. Its Apgujeong branch redecorated its shop since its opening in 2007.

Uniqlo has been promoting its sports or functional fabrics locally.

Since cashmere and silk fabrics are more expensive compared to cotton and nylon, the Apgujeong store’s

new line and look will likely bolster* Uniqlo’s local market share as it is in a strategic location for testing its new products.

Their sixth store opened in Myeongdong, a major shopping district, in November 2011, followed by stores opening in New York, Paris, London, Shanghai and Osaka.

The Myeongdong branch is reported to be the largest Uniqlo branch in Asia by size and the second largest in the world.

Its parent company, FRL Korea, reported double-digit growth since its launch in 2005. Currently, FRL owns 105 stores in Korea alone, as of August 29.

FRL Korea owns a 51 percent share of Uniqlo, while Lotte Shopping owns 49 percent.

The manufacturing sector reported the most professionals with increased salaries, while IT specialists experienced the largest number of salary decreases.

Salaries of 3 out of 4 bilingual professionals have increased this year, according to Robert Walters Korea in its 2013 Employee Insights Survey, a company that specializes in finding senior-level bilingual officials for multinational companies.

Its survey said that 75.4 percent of respondents saw their salaries rise this year, with around 18 percent of the same respondents receiving over a 10 percent increase.

Salary decreases were reported by 3.3 percent of respondents, while 21.3 percent had their salaries unchanged from last year.

Anthony Modrich, country manager of Robert Walters Korea, explained that most workers are

Polish 21-year- old woman wishes to have sex with 100,000 men

Polish woman Ania Lisewska, 21, revealed her elaborate* and ambitious* goal to have sex with 100,000 men throughout her lifetime.

To reach her goal, she plans to go on a “world tour” in which she is to have sex for twenty minutes with every man that she encounters.

As part of her first step towards her goal, Lisewska slept with 284 men during the past month.

Lisewska expressed her concerns for her home country, saying, “Poland is very

conservative* in terms of sex. Sexual fantasies are considered as mental problems.”

Meanwhile, there is much skepticism* regarding Lisewska’s “100,000 project,” which appears to be a marketing scam*. In order for her to achieve her goal, she has to sleep with 32 men every week for 60 years.

Further stories about Lisewska suggest that she is attempting to receive recognition from Guinness World Records. However, the organization currently does not recognize any sexually-oriented records.

Ben Affleck, 41, has been cast as the Caped Crusader for the 2015 Superman sequel, the first time to bring the two DC superheroes together on screen.

British actor Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman from the Man of Steel.

The superhero mash-up for the big screen was revealed in July by director Zack Snyder at a comic convention in San Diego, California.

Warner Bros. President Greg Silverman said “Ben Affleck certainly fits that [extraordinary actor] bill to take on one of DC Comics’ most

enduringly popular super heroes.”

Snyder, who directed Man of Steel, said Affleck, 41, will provide an “interesting counter-balance” to 31-year-old Cavill in their roles.

Republic of strife – frustrated young conservative and liberal vent 갈등 공화국

ccording to a recently published Samsung Economic Research Institute (SERI) study, among the 27 states that make up the OECD South Korea is second only to Turkey in social conflict intensity. Korea’s “conflict index” is costing the nation economic losses of around ₩246 trillion annually. Frankly, the report should not come as a surprise; the costs of social friction in this country are already well known to us. Our tiny peninsula is riven in the middle by indisputably the most frightening border in the world. As if this divide between north and south were not enough, the country under the 38th parallel is further divided into east and west, the capital region and the provincial rest that are wary and mistrustful of each other.

The tension doesn’t end here. Ulsan, Changwon and other industrial centers are frequently beset by strikes and labor disputes. The political storms, large and small, that emanate from Yeouido on a near daily basis eat away at our economic competitiveness. Every day we watch our esteemed parties and their whips locked in muscle contests and consumptive arguments, hemorrhaging political capital with gay abandon and nary a thought to what it is they are there for. Rowdy contentions over enlarging the welfare state since last year’s election cycle have potentially introduced new corners for conflict by arbitrarily hemming in the middle class and setting age limits on welfare eligibility. It may not be class warfare yet, but the ample potential here for widening fault lines between the middle class and working families as well as the middle class and the wealthy is there for all to see, in addition to the demographic tensions brewing between the middle and senior generations, the young and the middle-aged – the voting patterns of last year’s presidential election underscore this.

There is no point in pinpointing culprits, for all are at fault: the previous and current governments’ amateurish and lackadaisical responses, the unrelenting sensationalism and slanted coverage of events by the press and media, and even the general public, who, for all its democratic wisdom and better impulses is still guilty occasionally of demonstrating what is known in common parlance as its “tin cookware mentality,” or the tendency to abrupt excitability over an issue and subsiding into amnesia not long after. Such differences between generations, income brackets, regions, labor and corporations, and political agents make it difficult to be optimistic about finding the kind of bright, positive momentum that could power this country forward. The world around us has passed the digital revolution and is well into the mobile revolution, changing faster than ever; yet our own society at present has not harnessed these waves of change to its benefit. On the contrary, it has ridden these waves to speed up and intensify the rate of its conflicts. Structural low growth, low birth, and off the chart aging rates are the variables steadily feeding a worsening economic environment, and in all likelihood this will be a stimulus for greater social unrest, not less – and saddle us with a bill to match.

If we do not find ways to solve these conflicts, we risk letting our present predicament degenerate into a chain reaction of some consequence; the costs of social rupture rise leading to a decline in potential growth rate which increases social conflict and the economic costs it brings. It would not be an overstatement to say the future cannot be bright if the status quo stands. The country is no stranger to adversity - geopolitically, we are surrounded by China, Japan, and Russia, some of the greatest powers on earth. There is no guarantee that the success story we have written so far will

endure indefinitely. In this land of negligible natural resources, human capital is our best and only bet. A reasonable amount of conflict and dissension is healthy; it maintains a pluralistic balance and compromise between competing interests and sustains public commitment to the issues of the day. But the levels of social unrest we witness presently are dangerously excessive.

Social strife and disagreement at the level we have not only robs the social collective of its communitarian energy, it also takes its toll on individual productivity and morale. The Chicago sociologist George Herbert Mead argued that the social collective is a function of the attitudes and actions of individual actors, ordinary people such as you and me.

What solutions might we glimpse from this observation? Where do we begin to chip away at the discord and anger threatening to engulf this promising country, tiny but sturdy enough to punch above its weight? There is no grand theory that we know of. So let us take small steps for the time being, by listening to each other, and understanding the stations each of us comes from; progressive and conservative and libertarian, Yeongnam and Honam and Seoul, Protestant and Buddhist and atheist, college students burning the midnight oil for their futures, young salaried men and tteok-vending middle-aged ladies rubbing shoulders on the subway, chaebol-owning sons and grandsons whose fathers not only had the enterprising spirit but who also remembered their duty to country, and retired seniors who sacrificed their lives building this country and who ask to be allowed nothing more than to live out their lives in dignity. 등 증가, 사회갈등 비용 증가라는 악순환에 빠지게 되어 대한 민국의 미래는 어두워질 것이다. 우리나라는 지정학적으로 중국, 일본, 러시아 등 세계 최강대국들에 둘러쌓여있다. 그 리고 풍부한 지하자원이 없는 우리나라에서 믿을 것은 인적 자원, 즉 사람뿐이다. 적절한 갈등은 건강한 긴장 조성과 사 회적 문제에 관한 관심을 촉발하는 등 순기능이 있지만 우리 나라의 현 사회갈등 수준은 과도하다. 심한 갈등은 사회공동 체적 에너지의 손실 뿐만 아니라 개개인의 생산성, 활력에 큰 악영향을 준다. 사회학자 미드는 사회가 개개인의 태도와 행 위로 이루어져 있다고 말했다. 현 한국사회를 집어삼키려는 거대한 사회적 갈등 해결의 시작은 각자 서로를 경청하고 이 해하려는 작은 노력에 있을지도 모른다.

With limited space, it can be difficult to figure out how to feed yourself without resorting to living on ramyeon. Never fear, help is here in the form of three cheap, easy and quick recipes that any novice can cook up.

냄비 파스타

This is the perfect pasta dish for those with minimalist kitchens and the most basic cooking skills. 작은 부엌과 아주 기초적인 요리 실력을 가진 이들에게 완벽한 파스타 요리이다.

Ingredients

300g of (Linguine or spaghetti) 300g of cherry tomatoes 1 onion 6 cloves of garlic 5-6 basil leaves 1 teaspoon of chili flakes 1 teaspoon of mixed herbs Salt and pepper 3 tablespoons of olive oil 4 cups of boiling water

링귀네 혹은 스파게티 면발 300g 체리 토마토 300g 양파 1개 마늘 6 쪽 바질 잎 5-6 개 고춧가루 1 티스푼 허브 믹스 1 티스푼 소금과 후추 올리브유 3 티스푼 끓는 물 4 컵

Directions 조리 방법

Finely slice your garlic and onions and chop the cherry tomatoes in half.

Put the pasta into the pot along with the sliced onion, garlic, tomatoes, basil leaves, chili flakes, mixed herbs, salt, pepper and olive oil. Then add the water. Bring to the boil on a high heat and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring regularly. Cook until the pasta is “al dente,” and most of the water has evaporated. Add a little extra olive oil and some grated parmesan to serve. 마늘과 양파를 잘게 다지고 체리 토마토를 반으로 자른다. 파스타를 다진 양파와 마늘, 토마토, 바질 잎, 고춧가루, 허브 믹스, 소금, 후추와 올리브유와 함께 냄비에 넣는다. 그리 고 나서 물을 넣는다. 불 온도를 높여 10분 동안 계속 저어주면서 끓인다. 파스타가 알덴테 (중간 정도로 설익힘) 상태가 되고 물이 거의 증발했을 때까지 조리한다. 올리브유 조금과 간 파르메산을 넣어 요리를 완성한다.

600g of minced beef 1 onion 5 cloves of garlic 1 can of kidney beans 1 can full of water 1 beef stock cube.

3 peppers (1 red, 1 green, 1 yellow) 300ml of tomato juice 4 tablespoons of Mexican seasoning

Directions 조리 방법

Roughly chop the onion, peppers and garlic and throw them into your rice cooker bowl.

Break up the minced beef and add it to all the other ingredients. Put the rice-cooker on for two-three cycles until half of the liquid has evaporated and the vegetables, meat and beans have cooked. Add more spices at this point if it’s not spicy enough for you. Serve on its own, with rice, or over nachos smothered with cheese and a blob of sour cream. 양파, 피망과 마늘을 대강 자르고 밥솥에다 넣는다. 간 소고기를 여러 조각으로 나누어 다른 재료들과 함께 넣어준다. 액체가 반으로 줄고 야채, 고기와 콩이 익을 때까지 밥솥을 2-3회 작동시킨다. 충분히 맵지 않다면 이 시점에서 양념을 더해준다. 그 자체로, 쌀과 함 께, 혹은 치즈와 사워크림에 버무린 나쵸 위에 뿌려 요리를 완성한다.

I came, I saw… but did I conquer? 왔노라, 보았노라 하지만 이겼는가?

s I begin to prepare my departure from Korea, I am plagued with questions and doubts like, did I fulfill my purpose?

No, I had all of the right intentions, but the wrong attitude. I came to Korea because I knew there was a good chance that the love of my life was going to be stationed here for his job in the U.S. military. I was soon accepted into a teaching job and realized I would have to be in Korea alone for the first 6 months. I had it set in my mind that this year would be “MY YEAR”, that I would be on an “Eat, Pray, Love” rollercoaster. I would immerse myself in all things Korean Fine Arts, and I would become someone of another caliber.

Well that didn’t happen. Instead I allowed culture shock to take over my mind body and soul. It was as if a whirlwind came along and sucked me up. I couldn’t catch my breath I didn’t understand what was going on around me, and all I wanted to do was retreat to a familiar place… Home.

submerged in their hustle and bustle, but when I walked by, people would point, stare, giggle… one day a baby cried. I had just about had enough. And then I met a friend. Another African American teacher named Carole. She taught me how to take the subway, introduced me to so many wonderful people. I began to recognize me again.

Reflecting back on my attitude, I came to Korea with no knowledge of the language, and I had no intentions of learning it. I was convinced that not knowing what was being said around me would actually help with my “zen”. Well I was wrong.

Also perplexing, my students had no problem with using English words like the infamous N-word or names of animals to reference my race. They asked if I carried a gun, if I was violent and even talked about my breasts. I started to teach more ‘African American Damage Control’ and cultural lessons than English. After that, my interactions with my students and co-workers improved greatly, as did my attitude.

한국을 떠날 준비를 하니까 오만 가지 생각과 의혹들로 둘 러싸인다. 과연 내가 소기의 목적을 달성했을까? 이루지 못했다. 의도는 물론 좋았지만, 태도가 바르지 못 했다. 내가 한국에 온 이유는 내가 사랑하는 사람이 미군이기 때문에 이 곳에 정착할 확률이 높았기 때문이다. 나는 얼마 되지 않아서 가르치는 직업을 갖게 됐고 이 곳에 첫 6개월 동 안 혼자 살아야 한다는 사실도 알게 되었다. 나는 이것이 곧 내게 해가 될 거 라고 생각했고 음식, 기도, 사랑의 놀이기구 를 탈 거라고 믿었다. 한국 예술에 몸담고 완전히 다른 사람 이 될 거 라고 생각했다. 하지만 현실을 달랐다. 내게 찾아온 문화 충격이 마치 회 오리 바람처럼 날 집어 삼키고 내 몸과 마음을 장악했다. 난 숨쉴 틈 조차 없었다. 내게 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 이해 하지 못했고 난 집처럼 익숙한 곳으로 도망치고 싶을 뿐이었 다. 파주에 위치한 나의 조그마한 도시는 혼잡함 속에 살고 있 는 한국인들로 가득했다. 내가 지나가면 사람들이 내게 손가 락질하고 쳐다보고 비웃고… 심지어 한 아기가 운 적도 있 었다. 난 한계에 달했다. 그때 한 친구를 만나게 되었다. 캐롤 이라는 다른 아프리카계 미국 선생님이었다. 그녀는 내게 지 하철 타는 법도 가르쳐주고 여러 좋은 사람들에게 소개시켜

주었다. 난 다시 한번 내 자신을 알아보게 되었다. 나의 태도를 돌이켜보면 한국에 올 때 한국어에 대한 지식 이 전혀 없었고 배울 마음도 없었다. 내 주변에서 하는 말들 을 이해하지 못하는 게 오히려 더 나을 것이라고 생각했다. 하지만 그것은 잘못된 생각이었다. 당혹스럽게도 나의 학생들은 영어로 욕하는데 있어 아무 문제가 없었다. 예를 들어 N 으로 시작하는 비속어나 나의 인 종에 관한 동물들의 이름을 거론하였다. 그들은 나에게 총을 가지고 다니냐고, 폭력적이냐고 묻고 심지어 내 가슴에 대해 서도 이야기했다. 그 후 난 영어보다 아프리카계 미국인 피해 대책과 문화 수업을 더 많이 가르치게 되었고 학생들 그리고 동료 직원들과의 관계와 나의 태도 자체도 긍정적으로 변하 기 시작했다. 한국에서의 삶에 여러 가지 시행 착오가 있었지만 그것을 통해 많은 것들을 얻게 되었다.

While I had some serious trial and error, there was a lot of good that came from my time in Korea.

February was a month of amazing things including my marriage, which marked my sixth month in Korea. Once I embraced the beauty of Korea, and ignored the ignorance of some, I came to notice a very beautiful country. I visited German Village in Namhae, Lotte World, Gyeongbok Palace and I went to Mud Fest in Boryeong. I even took advantage of the great low cost travel to surrounding Asian countries, and my husband I had our honeymoon in Thailand. Being able to travel up and down the coasts and country sides of Korea, gave me the peace I was looking for and I learned the greatest lesson. I learned how strong I actually am in the face of adversity. As my year comes to a close, I have a great appreciation for Korean culture but, admittedly, an even greater one for my own.

태국으로 신혼여행도 다녀왔다. 한국의 해안과 시골을 둘러 보며 내가 그 동안 찾으려 했던 평안을 되찾고 큰 교훈을 얻 었다. 역경 앞에서 내 자신이 얼마나 강한지 알게 되었다. 한 해가 저물어 가는 지금, 난 한국의 문화를 감사히 생각하고 내 자신한테 특별히 더 감사하다.

ow are my readers doing? It’s your weekly Bonafide at your service. The hip-hop scene both in the U.S. and Korea are in total chaos. Diss songs, speculations and new updates are pouring out to settle this problem.

It was notorious back in the 80’s and 90’s to settle this problem with ‘gun fight and firearm’, but it seems like whoever gets the better brownie points from the audience, wins. I personally think it should be settled the old-fashioned way of hiphop; battling. 안녕하십니까? 보나파이드입니다. 미국과 한국힙합계가 아 직도 떠들썩한데요, 새로운 디스노래들의 연속으로 열기가 식 을 줄 모릅니다. 80, 90년대에는 싸움이나 총격전으로 이런 일들을 해결하기도 했는데요, 요즘은 가장 많은 호응을 받는 사람이 이기는 식인 것 같습니다. 저는 개인적으로 이러한 방 식들 보다는 고전힙합처럼 배틀로 종결했으면 하는 소망이 있 습니다.

Freestyle rapping skills is probably the most difficult thing an MC can achieve. You need to always have a vast amount of vocabulary that rhymes and the sense of flow to support it. There have been numerous rap battles both featured on screen or not, but to tell you the truth, THEY ARE NOT ALL FREESTYLES. Yes, some of them are staged or pre-written for the sake of entertainment.

I do understand that audiences expect a lot when watching free styling but it’s remarkably difficult to meet their standard on the spot. If the rap is “wack,” people won’t watch it, and at the same time, they don’t want to see staged scenes.

However, there are some renowned rappers out there with crazy freestyle sessions that actually blow people’s minds. 프리스타일은 아마도 랩퍼가 할 수 있는 가장 어려운 기술 이라고도 볼 수 있습니다. 언제든지 어마어마한 단어들과 라 임들을 숙지하고 그걸 받쳐주는 플로우가 있어야 합니다. 녹 화 여부를 떠나 프리스타일 배틀들이 참 많이 이루어지는데 요, 사실 대다수는 프리스타일이 아닙니다. 관중의 흥미를 위 해 미리 짜인 각본이 많죠. 솔직히 이해는 합니다. 준비를 하 지 않은 상태의 랩퍼가 제대로 랩을 못하면 시청률이 떨어지 죠. 관중의 눈은 항상 기대치가 높으니까요. 하지만 정말로 프 리스타일로 하는 사람들 중에 어마어마한 사람들도 많습니다.

This shows true skill as an MC, but can’t be recognized or appreciated as much as recorded albums. Almost any rapper could make a complete song with time and effort, but if it’s not recognized by the people, most of their work dies in vain.

Considering the feuds among E-Sens, Dynamic Duo, Simon D, Swings and other less-known MC’s are growing, the only way to settle them is by freestyle battling. Making diss songs again and again is just too tiresome to keep up and

make it look like they aren’t man enough to face each other. No fame, no money, no “beef,” just pure skill, head to head. But as I said, the skillful rappers that you may be fond of might not be good at freestyling at all. They will “choke,” (stutter or not able to rap continuously) they will mumble and they might not even rhyme. So maybe these rappers with beef won’t be able to freestyle in a battle, but I hope the show “Show Me the Money” could arrange such an event.

프리스타일은 랩퍼로서의 진정한 실력을 보여주지만 사실 정식앨범에 비해 각광받지 못하는 것은 사실입니다. 노래에 시간과 노력을 들이면 완성도 높게 만들 수는 있지만, 결국 앨 범이든 프리스타일이든 사람들에게 알려지지 않으면 의미가 없어지기도 합니다. 다이나믹듀오, 이센스, 쌈디, 스윙즈 등의 랩퍼들은 다 차이가 많고 인지도도 다르지만 이 디스전을 정 리할 수 있는 것은 프리스타일 배틀이라고 봅니다. 계속해서 디스송을 만들고 반복적으로 욕하는 것도 지속적으로 따라 듣 기도 귀찮아지고, 오히려 남자답지 못하다는 생각이 듭니다. 그래서 유명세, 돈, 악연 다 뒤로 하고, 그냥 서로를 마주하고 남자 대 남자로 깔끔하게 끝냈으면 좋겠습니다. 하지만 사실 우리가 존중하던 랩퍼들이 다 프리스타일을 잘하는 건 결코 아니기 때문에 오히려 그러기 싫어할 수도 있다고 봅니다. 요 즘 ’쇼미더머니’ 같은 티비프로에서 이들을 출연하게 하여 배 틀시키면 정말 뜨거운 시청률과 좋은 끝맺음을 가져올 것 같 습니다.

A famous movie 8 Mile does show some scenes on what a freestyle battle would be like, but this is unfortunately also staged and written. So this week, I would like to show you video clips of some crazy TRUE freestyle rapping or battling, because some of the freestyles are just too good to overlook. Have a great week and Enjoy.

Although some of his flow is stolen from an original song that he raps to, his creativity astounds me. 한국 아프리카 티비에 돌프라고 프리 스타일을 보여주는 방송을 하는 사람인 데, 저는 이 동영상으로 글르 처음 접하 게 되었습니다. 플로우는 원곡의 랩퍼 들을 살짝 모방하는 느낌이 있지만 그 래도 리듬을 자유자재로 타는게 인상적 이어서 소개합니다.

The song is called “Learn Chinese.” No wonder why it wasn’t too popular. Edinburgh is often described as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. As an “Edinburger” myself, I grew up listening to declarations of an award-winning, world class city yet failed to fully appreciate the beauty that had surrounded me since birth; “castles”, “turrets”, “history”, “inventions” were all terms which did not succeed in enamoring* me. Only now, after having lived on the other side of the world for the past four years can I truly appreciate what was being drummed into my head all this time; from fairytale skylines (sorry guys…it’s the only way to describe it) to sandy beaches lined with prestigious architecture, world famous festivals and quite an impressive collection of truly British museums, pubs and European style cafes, Edinburgh is quite possibly one of the best small cities in the world.

A must-see, the dramatic and imposing* Edinburgh Castle, ranks as the second most visited attraction. Perched on an extinct volcano, nothing is allowed to be built higher than this awe-inspiring structure dating back almost one thousand years.

As anyone with an interest in the performing arts would know, Edinburgh is also home of the world’s largest arts festival – the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Every August, the world descends on Edinburgh, doubling the population and providing a fantastic showcase of culture to suit any taste.

your way allowing you to spend your money elsewhere (I suggest pubs and fine dining in one of Edinburgh’s Michelin star restaurants).

As a local, I give you a local perspective but as a proud Edinburger, I will share with you with one of the nicest compliments to Edinburgh I have heard in years. As I was dining in Seoul, I quite naturally engaged in some small talk with an American woman at the next table over who had studied at Edinburgh University (currently ranked 21st in the world). She described her bus journey into the city which she said all the Google images in the world could never have prepared her for: As the bus from the airport (or the soon to be high-speed electric trams) rolls into the typically British-named Shandwick Place, try to make sure you are positioned to the front, right hand-side of your chosen vehicle, for the view you witness as you approach the end of the street will be one you will never forget. As you pass the professionally elegant opening to Charlotte Square you’ll be confronted with a brief cluster of pubs and cafes and enter the zone which firmly separates Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town – Princes Street. Arguably one of the best vistas in the world, Edinburgh Castle, surrounded by lush gardens, grand hotels and one of the most beautifully gothic-fairytale urban landscapes Western Europe has to offer is suddenly thrust into your face.

에든버러는 유럽의 가장 아름다운 도시 중 하나로 꼽힌 다. 에든버러에 살고있는 사람으로서 말하자면 필자는 세 계적인 도시로서 명성이 자자한 에든버러의 아름다움에 미치지 못하는 표현들을 들으면서 자랐다. "Social Campaign" is a Facebook page that tries to draw the power of collective intelligence to realize public ideas that can change the world.

Will its challenge be able to reap the successful result of creating a significant social impact? I met Mr. Hwang Seung-Ha (the founder of "Social Campaign") to ask just that. 소셜캠페인. 페이스북 페이지 이름으로써는 좀 낯서네요. 소개 좀 해주세요.

"Social Campaign"? It seems like a weird name for a Facebook page. Why don't you introduce yourself. 소셜캠페인은 페이지 운영자들이 연합하여 활동하는 페이 지입니다. 페이스북 페이지를 활용하여 공익캠페인(공익아 이디어)을 전개하자는 목적 하에 모였습니다. 우리의 목표는 일년 내로 50개의 페이지가 50개의 캠페인을 돕고 실현하는 것입니다.

"Social Campaign" is a Facebook page created by a league of popular Facebook pages. The other pages have gathered in order to use Facebook as a platform that can develop public campaigns and ideas. Our goal is to draw 50 pages, and hold 50 social campaigns. 공익적인 아이디어라고 말씀하셨는데요. 소셜캠페인에서 는 정확히 어떤 종류의 일을 ‘공익적’이라고 보는 거죠?

You have said that Social Campaign helps develop "public" campaigns and ideas. How do you define "public"? 참 많은 사회적 활동들이 ‘공익적’일 수 있겠지요. 다만 저 희는 사회적으로 조명 받아야 될 중요한 사회적 활동들에 대 한 소식이 다른 활동들에 대한 소식들에 묻히는 것에 대해 아 쉬움을 많이 느끼고, 소셜캠페인이 조명할 수 있는 역할을 맡 고 싶습니다.

We believe many social activities can be called "public", but we are focusing on the fact that there are many important social activities that have become blind spots in our society due to an inundation of news about other activities. Social

Campaign would like to take the role of shedding light upon these important public social activities.

저희가 할 구체적인 활동에 대한 예시 중에 하나로 사회적 기업가와 공익 모금 활동을 위한 홍보를 돕는 것입니다. 아름 다운 사회를 만들기 위한 미션을 가지고 좋은 활동을 하고 있 는 사회적 기업가들이 많습니다. 하지만 사람들에게 알려지 는데 어려움을 겪는 경우가 많습니다. 이러한 사회적기업의 스토리와 미션을 알리는 것이 필요할 것입니다.

물론 페이스북과 온라인 콘텐츠를 기반으로 더 많은 사람 들에게 알려야 하기 때문에 페이지들과 함께 하는 취지는 알 겠습니다. 그런데 소셜캠페인과 함께 하고 싶은 일반인들은 동참할 수 없나요?

A specific example of activities that we are planning is to promote social entrepreneurs and charity events. There are many social entrepreneurs out there who aim to achieve the mission of creating a good society bBut they have problems with raising awareness. 33 pages have joined us. Most of the pages have more than 10,000 fans. 엄청난 숫자네요. 이렇게 많은 단체를 어떻게 섭외하셨죠?

That’s a really big number. How did you bring together so many organizations? 쉽진 않았습니다. 저희의 좋은 활동에 동참해달라고 수많 은 페이지 운영자 분들에게 메시지를 보냈습니다. 많은 분들 이 좋은 목표에 공감해주셔서 참여해주시게 되었습니다. 만 약 페이지 분들의 응원이 없었다면 포기했을 겁니다. 사랑해 요!

It wasn't easy at all. I have sent myriad Facebook messages to the page administrators in order to let them participate in our activities.

Many of them have sympathized with our good objectives and decided to participate.

I understand the Social Campaign's intention of working with other Facebook page administrators.

So, what's coming up in the near future? 첫 번째로 열리는 이벤트는 10월 중순에 열리는 '공포 치 맥페스티벌'입니다. 무서운 축제는 아니고 ‘공포’는 '공익포 럼'의 줄임말입니다. 사회적으로 중요한 이슈를 알릴 수 있 는 공익포럼을 치맥축제와 합쳐 '의미'와 '재미'를 함께하는 축제를 만들고 싶습니다.

Our first event is "Gong-Po Chicken andBeer Festival"! The word 'gong-po" doesn't mean "fear". It is an abbreviation of "gong-ik[public service] forum". We would like to combine "gongik forum", which can reveal socially important issues, and a chicken andbeer festival. 영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby의 유용한 회화/이디엄 표현으로 영어실력 향상하기 Hello everyone! 강남역 셀리어학원의 영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby입니다. 이번 회에도 다양한 이디엄 표현을 통해 여러분들의 영어 실력을 키워드리도록 하겠습니다. 본지에 게시하는 이디엄 표현들은 제가 즐겨 사용하는 표현들로 이디엄 특성상 각 단어를 조합해서는 실제 의미를 알아내기가 어렵습니다.

#1 : come by (얻다) by는 “가까이”라는 부사적 의미가 있습니다. 무엇이 “가까이 오다”라는 의미에서 “얻다”라는 의미가 연상되는 것입니다.

A good friend is hard to come by. 좋은 친구는 찾기 어렵다. #2 : do one a favor (누구의 부탁을 들어주다) favor의 가장 기본적인 의미는 “좋아하는 것”으로 볼 수가 있습니다. 상대방이 내 마음에 들어야 친절이나 호의를 보일 수 있을 것이며, 더 나아가서 부탁도 들어주겠죠? 추가적으로, 누가 내 부탁을 들어줬으면, 한 번 빚진 셈이니 owe one a favor, 이 빚을 추후에 청산하면 return one the favor 등의 연결된 표현들도 있으니 함께 참고하시길 바랍니다.

Bill, do me a favor and shut up. I’m trying to get some sleep here!! 빌, 부탁이니까 좀 닥쳐줘. 나 잠 좀 자자. #3 : do a number on one (누구에게 피해를 주다, 속이다) do a number on one은 구어체 표현으로 누구에게 피해를 주거나 속이는 등, 몹쓸 짓을 한다는 표현입니다.

I turned him over to the police. 중고나라에서 핸드폰을 판다는 애가 나한테 사기를 치려고 하더라고. 그래서 걔를 경찰에 넘겼지. #4 : a hell of a time (고생) 한국어 속어적 표현 중 [X줄 빠지다]라는 표현이 있죠? 그러한 상황을 묘사하기 아주 적절한 표현입니다. 간혹, 반어적으로 엄청 좋은 상황을 표현하는 경우도 있으니 상황을 잘 파악하시길 바랍니다.

I had a hell of a time last night because I drank too much. 나 어제 술을 너무 많이 마셔서 엄청 고생했어. #5: be dying to know (궁금해 미치겠다) 이 표현의 기본이 되는 [be dying to 동] 무엇하고 싶어 죽겠다 정도의 의미로 간절히 원한다는 의미가 있습니다.
