Art Gyeongju 2013 아트경주 2013

The “Art Gyeongju 2013” commenced* at the Gyeongju Indoor Gymnasium on September 13.

The exhibition* brought together some of Korea’s most talented artists in a city that boasts a long history of art and culture.

At the opening ceremony, Gyeongju City Mayor Choi Yang-sik gave a congratulatory note*.

“It is with great thanks to the citizens for contributing to a successful Art Gyeongju 2012 that

has made possible this year’s Art Gyeongju 2013.

The exhibition offers a variety of artwork, with the participation of 46 galleries, five renowned artists, and 15 myth exhibitions.

“The venue further aims to provide the foundation for discovering new artists that can become leaders in the domestic and foreign art industries.”

Among the participating galleries is Gallery Capital, which aims to reward artists through public

viewing and provide them with the opportunity to offer their work for sale.

The organization operates in collaboration with the World Artist Interaction Association. It has held over 35 exhibitions since June 2012 and is currently focusing on cultivating international artists through participation in art fairs in a variety of domestic and foreign venues.

Suicide concerns on the rise in military personnel

Rep. Song Young-keun of the ruling Saenuri (New Frontier) Party proposed a revision of health and medical laws to identify soldiers and officers at high risk of suicide based on their psychological* health monitoring.

The proposal came as increased numbers of troops are found to be struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.

A survey was conducted on 1,310 soldiers by the Ministry of National Defense from September last year through May this year. Suicidal thoughts were reported in 9.3 percent of personnel, 1.8 percent planned suicide and 1.2 percent attempted suicide.

The most common reason was difficulties adapting to the environment. Another reason included was tough conditions on military bases.

Over half of whom suffered from mental illnesses* showed signs of suicidal thoughts before joining the military.

Around 4.6 percent suffer from depression, which is much higher than the 1.8 percent of Korean men suffering from depression.

Military hospitals in the country admitted over 40,000 patients suffering from mental illnesses. Of those, 185 soldiers were discharged from service because of their conditions.

The National Police Agency reported that one violent crime occurs every 54 seconds nationwide.

Titled “Occurrence of the Five Major Crimes,” the report reads that the number of serious crimes including murder, robbery, rape, theft and battery* was 339,186 between January and July this year.

The number of murders was 545 during the first half of this year, which is once every nine hours, 20

minutes and 24 seconds.

Around 1,200 robberies were committed, or once every six hours, 14 minutes and 24 second. Sexual assaults took place every 25 minutes and 12 seconds, far more frequent than the former crimes.

Theft (162,267 cases) and battery (162,940 cases) occurred every one minute, 53 seconds and one minute, 52 seconds, respectively.

경찰청은 강력 범죄 한 건이 전국에 평균 54초당 한번 꼴로 발생한다고 발표했다.

‘5대 주요 범죄 발생’이라는 제목의 보고 서에서 따르면, 살인, 강도 사건, 강간, 절도, 구타 범죄는 올해 1월과 7월 사이 339,186 건의 발생 빈도를 보였다. 올해 상반기 살인 사건이 545건이었다는 것은 매 9시간 20분 24초마다 한 번씩 발생 했다는 의미다.

The Korean legal system and public tolerance of sexual minorities* have been put to the test by the country’s first gay marriage on September 7.

The newlyweds* were Kim-Jho Gwang-soo, a film director, and film distributor Kim Seunghwan, both having being partners for nine years.

The symbolic ceremony was held in central Seoul.

Guests were reported to number to around 1,000 which included Kim-Jho’s mother, film director Byun Young-joo and civil activist Paik Ki-wan.

The Korean legal system, however, does not recognize same-sex marriage. Regardless, KimJho, 49, announced that they are a married couple.

He is an openly gay activist.

“Whether or not we become a legally married couple is important,” Kim-Jho said to reporters before the ceremony. “What’s more important is that we want people to know that gays can marry too in our society.”

The couple will seek legal recognition for their marriage, also considering filing a petition with the Constitutional Court* if the government does not legally recognize their marriage.

Some lawmakers and gay rights activists have supported their decision, promising to join the legal battle.

Rep. Jin Sun-mee of the Democratic Party

said, “People in love should be encouraged to be together. Not allowing people to marry because of their sex is discrimination.”

The ceremony was briefly disrupted by a selfclaimed elder from a Christian church, who threw food and waste at the guests.

“Gay marriage is a sin. It destroys society and families,” he shouted before being dragged away by police.

Some religious groups argue that gay marriage would destroy the foundations of society and traditional values.

진선미 민주당 의원은 “사랑하는 사람들끼리 같이 있을 수 있게 격려를 해줘야 한다. 성에 관련된 이유로 결혼을 막는 것은 차별하는 것과 다름없다” 라고 얘기했다. 한편 결혼식은 교회 집사라고 자칭한 한 노인이 음식과 쓰 레기를 하객들에게 던짐으로 중단됐었다. 그는 “동성 결혼은 죄다. 사회와 가정을 무너뜨린다” 라고 외치며 경찰에 의해 끌려 나갔다.

Despite the reduction of salt intake helping to prevent high blood pressure and cardiovascular* disorders, patients with such health factors have higher mortality rates if they do not take enough chloride*, which makes up 60 percent of salt.

and Medical Sciences at the University of Glasgow. Reported by Science Daily on September 8, his study shows a 20 percent higher mortality rate for those who had smaller chloride intake.

Though further study may be required, Dr. Padmanabhan believes chloride plays a crucial role in the human body.

He argued that chloride should be taken into consideration, not just sodium* being the primary concern, which makes up 39 percent of salt.

The research can be found in the latest journal of Hypertension, published by the American Heart Association (AHA).

According to data shown by the Korea Health Promotion Foundation (KHPF) on September 10, the suicide rate amongst Korean youth rose by 57 percent since 2001, increasing faster than the adult rate.

The number of suicides per 100,000 people aged 10 to 19 increased to 5.58 in 2011 from 3.19 in 2001. September 10 is marked as World Suicide Prevention Day. The suicide rate for adults aged between 20 to 64 jumped 50.5 percent, 33.58 per 100,000 people from 16.96 during the same period.

The rate for Korean adolescents* was much

higher than the average suicide rate among the same age group in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The rate decreased for youth aged 10 to 24 in OECD countries between 2000 and 2010, falling to 6.5 per 100,000 from 7.7. For Koreans in the same age range, the rate soared 47 percent to 9.4 from 6.4, being fifth among the organization.

The growth rate in Korea ranked second among the 34-member nations, followed by China with 53 percent.

Medical treatment for adults is important as the factors are caused by mental illnesses, such

as depression. For teenagers, suicide stems from impulsive feelings* rather than the same psychological disorders, the KHPF said.

A separate study by Statistics Korea last year showed that teenaged suicides were caused by school grades and family troubles. Adults aged 20 and over cited economic difficulties and diseases as the primary causes.

The KHPF emphasized on adults making efforts to understand the youngsters’ feelings of stress and other difficulties to prevent suicide.

2000년과 2010년도 사이 타 OECD 국가들에서는 10살에 서 24살 사이 청소년의 자살률이 10만 명당 7.7에서 6.5로 하락했다. 반면 동일 연령대의 한국인 자살률은 6.4%에서 9.4%로 올랐다. 이는 OECD에서 5번째 수치이다. 한국의 자살 증가율은 34개 회원국 중 중국의 53%를 이어 2위를 차지했다. 성인을 위한 약물치료는 우울증과 같은 정신병을 유발하 는 요인들만큼 중요하다. 한국건강증진재단에 의하면, 10대

의 자살은 성인과 같은 심리적 장애보다는 충동적인 감정으 로부터 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 작년 통계청에서 이루어진 독립 연구에 의하면 10대의 자 살은 학교 성적과 가정불화로 인한 것이 가장 많은 것으로 나 타났다. 20세 이상 성인의 경우 경제적 어려움과 병이 주된 이유였다. 한국건강증진재단은 청소년의 자살을 방지하기 위해서는 성인들이 청소년들의 스트레스와 다른 어려움들을 이해하려 고 노력해야 한다고 강조했다.

A road connecting Vietnam’s industrial complex* with Ho Chi Minh City will be provided financial assistance by the Korean government.

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance announced the government will aid Vietnam in the construction of a 17.85 kilometer, four-lane road linking the Nhon Trach Industrial Complex. Local companies such as POSCO and Lock & Lock operate there with the country’s biggest city.

The state-run Export-Import Bank of Korea and private companies will finance the 467 trillion won (US$430 million) project.

A public-private partnership from both countries will carry out the project, and both private companies

will invest, build and operate the road.

Local companies must bid for the project to Korea Eximbank, the winners also requiring forming partnerships with Vietnamese companies for the project.

As of August, Korea has invested in 44 of Vietnamese infrastructure* projects that include hospitals, public water systems and waste treatment for economic development.

The road construction would be Korea’s largest investment in Vietnam so far. Also, Korea’s infrastructure investment into Vietnam accounted for over 20 percent of Southeast Asia.

As women have become the leading consumer* group over the past several years, the local fashion industry is targeting women in their 20s to fight the current economic slump*.

The economic activity for women has reached 62.9 percent last year, according to Statistics Korea, overtaking men reaching 62.6 percent.

Fashion experts argue that most young women focus on their image through fashion consciousness, but also their needs have diversified, searching for something that fits their image.

Overall, women are more willing to spend their money on clothes and accessories than men.

To meet women’s demands, apparel* companies have shifted their focus on few main items that represent their brand image to distinguish themselves from others.

A spokesperson said Chohuette has been popular amongst women in their 20s as well as to celebrities since its launch.

FnC Kolon plans to reinforce its accessories and offer them at reasonable prices. Its profit goal is 24 billion won (US$22.1 million) nationwide, and aims to expand its business activities overseas next year.

Another clothing brand, whose trench coats are popular with female customers, is on & on.

The company will focus on its trench coats as their main item throughout the year to increase revenue.

Other clothing manufacturers include Tomboy and Chloë Sevigny, the former branding its identity through celebrity endorsements, the latter approaching its consumers with brand originality and strong brand image.

Clothing brands are maintaining and increasing their product information. Especially with information widely available online, women in their 20s are keeping up-to-date on the latest trends, finding what is worth purchasing.

Hyundai Rotem has agreed on September 8 to work with a Russian state-run* train manufacturer on connecting the railroads of Asia and Europe.

Executives from the Russian state-run UralVagonZavod will visit Hyundai Rotem’s Changwon plant and research institute to discuss on cooperation and technological exchange for the project.

Reports of the agreement arose after President Park Geun-hye’s state visit meeting Russian president Vladimir Putin.

President Park said of the project, “I had dreamt for a day when a train would depart from Busan to reach Europe through Russia.”

The government has consistently* talked of such a project, connecting the trans-Korean and trans-Siberian railways.

Chairman Chung Mong-koo of Hyundai Motor Group previously called on affiliates to take more initiative* on the project.

The railway would reduce expenses and time for motor exports.

Key geographical factors for the Eurasian railway are Russia and North Korea.

Chang Deok-gyu, a spokesperson for Hyundai Rotem, stated he “[hopes] that by working closely with Russia, North Korea would also be persuaded to join in the efforts.”

“If the two Koreas and Russia can agree on how to connect the railway lines threading through Eurasia, the train manufacturing may one day occur in North Korea.”

LG Electronics announced on September 9 of its plans to release the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet in some 30 countries by the end of this year.

The G Pad 8.3, the latest G Series lineup*, was unveiled earlier this month. The tablet has a full HD display, runs on the Snapdragon 600 Processor and has a 1.7GHz QuadCore CPU, the latter helping to enhance viewing experience.

Signs of Korean soccer stagnating* persists in the FIFA rankings, barely above 70th.

FIFA released the latest ranking list on September 12. South Korea recorded 574 points, losing two spots from August at 58th. Japan, Iran, Australia and Uzbekistan are the top five in Asia, ranking 42nd, 48th, 53rd and 57th, respectively. The national team ranks lower than Uzbekistan, which did not qualify for the 2014 Brazil World Cup. South Korea last ranked 58th six years and two months ago on July, 2007. The record is not far from ranking 62nd in February 1996, the lowest, yet. However, depending on the results of the “A Match” in October, the national team’s ranking

may go down lower than the record.

The South Korean team will hold local friendly matches against Brazil and Mali on October 12 and 15, respectively. The October rankings will accumulate the two matches and also the previous match against Croatia on September 10, which resulted in a 2-1 loss. If both friendlies against Brazil and Mali also result in losses, South Korea will fall to 527 points.

Both matches resulting in victories will gain South Korea 17 points to 591 points. An aggregate* of the September ranking will place the country on the 52nd spot. Victories in both the October A Matches are needed for the said FIFA ranking.

10월 12일과 15일에 각각 계획된 브라질 과 말리와의 국내 평가전에서 모두 패할 경 우 한국은 527점으로 떨어진다. 반면 브라질과 말리에 모두 승리하면 591 점으로 9월 순위에 52위로 등극하게 된다.

FIFA 랭킹을 올리기 위해 10월 A매치의 승 리가 반드시 필요한 상황이다.

Film Review: Snowpiercer ‘설국열차’ 영화 리뷰 Article by Rodrigo Braune Translation by Kim Hong-ik

From the innovative director of “The Host,” Snowpiercer is a must-watch. Based on a French three-volume comic series, the story is about a train that travels around the world, in a postapocalyptic time after the planet has frozen. 영화 ‘괴물’ 외 여러 흥행작들을 제작한 봉준호 감독의 설 국열차는 꼭 봐야 하는 영화 중 하나이다. 3권으로 된 프랑스 만화 시리즈 설국열차는 얼어버린 지구를 도는 기차에 대한 이야기다.

Bong Joon-ho once again mesmerizes the audience with his film style in a movie full of tension, blood, violence and surprises. The entire film is set inside a train and the plot is very intriguing, with thorough unpredictable scene details that, when revealed later, cause surprise. It is not only surprising but also sometimes shocking and repulsive to understand how humanity can be so inhumane in times of hunger and despair.

The film also creates some mystery of what lies behind the next door, as the rioting people from the back of the train advance to the upper class’ cars. 봉준호 감독은 긴장감, 피, 폭력, 그리고 놀라움이 넘치는 이 영화에서 자신의 스타일을 통해 다시 한번 관객들을 사로 잡았다. 영화 전체가 열차 안에서 전개되며 줄거리 또한 전혀 예상치 못한 장면들이 반전을 줄 때 몹시 흥미롭다. 사람들 이 배고픔에 굶주리고 좌절함으로 이성을 잃고 무자비해지 는 장면들을 통해 놀라움뿐만 아니라 때론 충격과 혐오감도 불러 일으킨다. 열차 뒷칸에서 폭동을 일으키는 사람들이 상 류층이 타고 있는 열차로 나아가려는 장면은 열차 문 저편에 무엇이 있을까 하는 호기심도 불러 일으킨다.

The film is critical of society and to economic systems. In real life, as well as in the train, for people to live a good life, and to keep the same quality of life, others have to suffer and to live in extremely bad conditions. Also, the population control is a huge problem that in the train was

solved by creating events in which people revolted and died. 설국열차는 사회와 경제 체제에 대해 비판적이다. 열차 안 에서처럼 현실에서도 일부 사람들이 풍요로운 삶을 누리기 위해서는 다른 이들이 열악한 환경에서 고생해야 한다. 인구 조절 또한 큰 이슈이기 때문에 사람들이 반란을 일으키고 죽 는 사건들이 충분히 발생할 수 있다.

Although the whole film is in English—except for some parts in Korean—Bong Joon-ho proved that there is no language barrier for making a film.

After all, image is a universal language: silent films are there to prove it. 영화가 전체적으로 영어로 진행되지만 (한국말이 나오는 몇몇 장면들을 제외하고) 봉준호 감독은 영화를 만드는데 있 어 언어의 장벽을 극복했다. 영상은 전세계 공용어이며 무언 극은 이를 입증해 준다.

As for the acting, Chris Evans, playing Curtis, who is a candidate to be the next leader of the back of the train, is a flawless hero and good guy. Another special mention goes to Song Kang-ho who starred as a drug-addicted security expert who was imprisoned but then freed by the rebels to help them take control of the train.

His performance is remarkable and without him, the film wouldn’t have the same impact. His daughter, played by Ko Ah-sung, is a mysterious clairvoyant who can predict what’s behind the train doors. They also starred together in the film “The Host.” 배우 크리스 에반스가 맡은 커티스 라는 인물을 극중 열차 뒷칸에 대장이 되는 선량하고 흠잡을 데 없는 영웅이다. 마약 에 중독된 보안 전문가 역할을 맡은 송강호의 열연에 찬사를 보낼 수밖에 없다. 그는 감금되었다가 반항하는 무리들에 의 해 풀려나 그들이 열차를 장악 할 수 있도록 도와준다. 그의 연기는 감탄이 절로 나오며 그가 없는 설국열차는 상상조차 할 수 없다.

The director portrayed the upper class in the train as being almost brainwashed and worshipping something they call “the engine” that gave them life. They’re also portrayed as consumerists, hedonists and alienated people who don’t know what is happening in the back of the train and don’t want to leave their comfort zone. 봉준호 감독은 열차 내 상류층을 마치 세뇌 당한 사람들인 마냥 그들에게 생명을 주는 열차의 엔진을 섬기는 사람들로 묘사한다. 그들은 소비지상주의자들이자 쾌락주의자인 동시 소외된 사람들이며, 열차 뒷칸에서는 무슨 일이 일어나는지 에 대해 전혀 모른 체 자신들의 공간에서 벗어나고 싶지 않는 다.

The end is somehow disappointing but there is an evident analogy to Adam and Eve that gives a special meaning to the film. From the beginning to just before the film’s conclusion, the flow is great but with such build-up inducing high expectations, the mediocre conclusion falls short of expectations. But overall, it looks like this movie will hit the spotlight when it gets released worldwide, and definitely more Korean directors should start working in cooperation with other countries such as the U.S., France and so on. 영화의 결말은 다소 실망스럽지만 영화에 각별한 의미를 더하는 아담과 하와에 대한 비유가 포함되어 있다. 시작부터 끝까지 흐름은 좋지만, 원체 컸던 기대 때문에 평범한 결말은 관객들을 아쉽게 한다. 하지만 전 세계에 개봉되면 큰 히트를 칠 것으로 예상되며, 앞으로 더 많은 한국 영화 감독들이 미 국과 프랑스 등 다른 나라들과 할 것을 기대해본다. rodbraune@gmail.com

Seoul around 2006 she has been extremely active both as a leader of her own quartet and as a much in-demand sideman. She is also lead alto with the Seoul Soloist Jazz Orchestra, which recorded its first full-length album in April 2010. Boni is a dynamic and multi-talented Korean Soul and R&B Korean singer and winner of the 2012 Korean R&B Album of the Year. She is currently the premiere R&B artist at Inplanet

any Koreans have developed a love for jazz music and have promoted it through clubs and popular festivals. Jin Pureum and Boni are just a couple of the many extremely talented Jazz and R&B artists here in the Republic of Korea tirelessly committed to making “good music.” Both will put their talents on display in Yongsan at the Essence of Seoul Festival on Saturday October 19.

Jin Pureum started playing the saxophone at a young age in middle school when she was studying classical music. At 17, she was inspired by the great saxophonist John Coltrane who started her great fascination with jazz. After graduating from school, she decided to study jazz seriously and was accepted at Kyung Hee University. She holds a degree in Jazz Saxophone Performance. Since entering the jazz scene in

Records, a dynamic record label with award winning hip hop and soul artists. Her vocal ranges and melodic rifts are unlike any other singer in the country. She possesses a unique sound that reminds many of her listeners of the likes of Adele. This will be her third performance in Yongsan, but first for the entire community.

Jin Pureum and Boni will be featured at this year’s Essence of Seoul Festival on the U.S. Military Yongsan Installation. The Essence of Seoul Festival is hosted by the gentlemen of the Korea Alumni Chapter (KAC) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. A registered nonprofit organization founded in 1911, chartered in Korea on April 18, 1981 originally as the Seoul

Alumni Chapter. With over 30 members on the Korean Peninsula, Kappa Alpha Psi consistently awards over $10,000 in scholarships to high school students annually. The group also actively participates in community service events and charitable fundraisers nationwide.

This premiere event will include live music, art, and free empowerment seminars. Food and a diverse collection of art, music, and clothing vendors will be on site. eet Lindsay Jungmi Won. This world traveler has spent approximately 13 years of her life abroad. She has lived in Germany, Korea and the U.S. as well as visited a total of 20 countries, mostly throughout Europe. Her favorite place to live is Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. While here in Korea, she enjoys escaping to pensions in the mountains, her favorite being the German-style SeulBerg in Gyeonggi Province west of Seoul.

원정미 린지씨를 소개한다. 그녀는 세계 여행가로서 약 13 년을 해외에서 보냈다. 독일, 한국, 미국에 거주했으며 주로 유럽 지역에 해당하는 총 20개의 국가를 방문했다. 그녀에게 있어 최고의 거주지는 미국 캘리포니아 주의 로스엔젤레스 다. 그녀는 한국에 머무르는 동안 산장을 방문하는 것을 즐 겼는데, 특히 경기도에 위치한 독일풍의 ‘솔베르크’가 가장 좋았다고 한다.

I speak two, Korean and English. Both are my mother tongue. Unfortunately, since I attended an international school while living in Germany, my German is only good enough for survival.

hat are you favorite and least favorite aspects of traveling?

My favorite aspect is that I can try different foods. I love trying out unique dishes from all over the world. Least is, of course, transferring and waiting for flights.

Airports are bittersweet places for me.

hen you get to a new place, what are the first things you usually do?

It sounds funny but I observe the people. It is just fascinating how in different cultures the way someone acts or talks to others can be so different.

Also, when I go to a place, I visit the richest and the poorest people which help me to be more balanced. For example, while living in St. Louis, I would visit East St. Louis to see the needs of the people there. When I visited Chicago, I went to the poorest part of the city. I went to see the homeless. When I arrived in LA, I saw Latino gangs fighting each other at a back alley of Koreatown. This opened my eyes to integration issues and segregation.

People: Koreans are friendly. They reach out to people easily.

Food: Going to Greece was like a dream come true. I got to try all the yummy seafood, Greek salad and yogurt.

음식: 그리스 방문은 마치 꿈과도 같았습니다. 저는 맛있 는 해산물, 그리스 샐러드, 그리고 요거트를 모두 먹어볼 수 있었습니다.

Nature/Natural beauty: Of course, hands down, the United States offers awesome natural beauty—mountains, lakes, hills and the sea.

Fashion: While I was visiting Italy, I saw so many people dressed up like models. From their hats, nails, clothing, to shoes.

hat would be different in your life if you had not traveled or lived abroad?

Had I not traveled, I wouldn’t be able to be confident with the changes in life in general. I am quite good in adapting to changes. After all, I did move 16 times in my life.

제가 여행을 하지 않았다면 저는 삶 전반적으로 변화를 두려워했을 것입니다. 저는 변화에 잘 적응 하는 편입니다. 돌이켜보면, 저는 살면서 16번의 이 사를 했습니다.

Do you notice a difference between people who have lived abroad and those who have not?

Everyone is the same. We all crave something exotic or fun. If we open our minds, a new world is possible. We can all live and have a job elsewhere if we put our minds to it.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes. I had a great week. I have focused my articles and songs mostly on hip-hop and R&B music, and this week I would like to introduce you to a different genre. Probably a more popular genre and the genre that is “foretold” to be forever: rock. Rock has been popular since the 1950s and became more diverse and prominent in the 60s. Considering its legacy, I am almost positive that everyone has at least one favorite rock song they have. Rock has evolved into many kinds of sub-genres from heavy metal to alternative rock. All the genres and fusing are like a melting pot just like the people all over the world. Sometimes it’s even hard to tell the genre of certain songs since it has all the elements of other genres. So today I will like to introduce some of the bands I grew fond of. 안녕하십니까? 보나파이드입니다. 지난 주에 많은 분들께 서 생일축하를 해주셔서 너무나 감사 드립니다. 여지껏 힙합 과 알앤비를 주로 다루는 기사와 노래들을 소개했었는데요, 이번주는 조금 다른 장르를 소개하려 합니다. 어떻게 보면 힙 합과 알앤비를 합친 것보다도 많은 인기를 지속적으로 누리는 장르는 록입니다. 1950년대에 시작되어 60년대까지도 많고 다양한 발전을 보였습니다. 록의 역사를 생각했을 때는, 누구 나 한 곡쯤은 좋아하는 노래가 있을 것입니다. 요즘엔 장르들 간, 혹은 장르 내 퓨전이 많이 일어나고 있습니다. 오늘은 제 가 좋아하는 록밴드들을 소개하려합니다.

One Republic is an American rock band that started in Colorado. Formed by lead singer Ryan Tedder and Zack Filkins in 2003, they first grew fame because of an unsigned act on MySpace.

Later, they were discovered by Hollywood actress Kelly Barrett and signed to Sony. They haven’t reached their peak until 2007 with the song “Apologize.” It was more famous with Timbaland (hip-hop producer) remixing the song and made it very catchy. It gave them a Grammy nomination and still is considered a memorable song they have created. I personally like the original version, which has less of a commercialized vibe with more of the band’s unique color. 원리퍼블릭은 콜로라도에서 시작된 밴드로, 리드 보컬 라이 언 테더와 잭 필킨이 2003년도에 결성한 밴드입니다. 나중에 헐리우드 여배우 켈리 베릿으로부터 발굴되어 소니 소속사에 합류하게 됩니다. 그들이 유명해진 건 2007년도의 Apologize 라는 노래 덕분입니다. 누구나 힙합프로듀서 팀버랜드와 합작 한 버전은 들어봤으리라 생각하는데요, 저는 개인적으로 오리 지날 버전을 더 좋아합니다. 덜 대중적이고 그들의 색깔이 더 돋보이는 곡이기 때문입니다.

Three Doors Down is another American rock band that started in Missouri. This band has an interesting history since there were many member changes, but yet, still famous for almost every album they have come out with. The notable

change is that drummer Daniel Adair, who was with Three Doors Down later, became a full-time drummer for Nickelback, which I will mention below. Three Doors Down has rose to fame with their first song “Kryptonite” and soon after, won six platinum records for the following albums.

They were known to have over 300 concerts a year and sold over 20 million albums worldwide.

That’s like having a concert every day besides the holidays! 쓰리 도어 다운은 미국 미주리에서 시작된 밴드로, 수 차례의 멤버 교체로 인해 독특한 역사를 가지고 있는 밴드 입니다. 그중에서 다니엘 어데어라는 드러머는 훗날 니클백 소속이되었습니다. 이 밴드는 처음에 Kryptonite 라는 노래 로 흥행하게 되어 그후에도 6개의 플래티넘 레코드를 발매하 게 되고 일년에 콘서트만 300개 넘게 하며 2000만장의 앨범 을 전세계적으로 판매한 엄청난 밴드입니다. 300개의 콘서트 면 휴일빼고 매일 콘서트를 했다고해도 과언이 아니네요. 놀 랍지 않습니까?

Nickelback is the only non-American rock band that I introduce today. They were formed in Alberta, Canada in 1995, and also had some group members changed. They are Canada’s most commercially successful band selling over 50 million copies, and noted as the 11th bestselling music act behind The Beatles. They are currently based in Vancouver, Canada, and after several hit songs, they haven’t been heard from lately.

Honestly, If I sold 50 million copies of albums? I will probably spend the rest of my life in some sort of paradise. Wouldn’t you? 니클백은 오늘 소개한 밴드 중 유일하게 미국 밴드가 아닙 니다. 그들은 알버타 캐나다에서 1995년에 밴드를 결성하고, 몇몇 멤벼 교체가 있었습니다. 그들은 캐나다에서 가장 성공 한 밴드 중 하나이며 5000만장의 앨범을 판매하고 비틀즈 다 음으로 11번째 베스트 셀러 밴드가 되었습니다. 현재는 밴쿠 버 캐나다에서 활동 중이며 여러 개의 히트송을 발표했습니 다. 만약 제가 앨범을 5000만장 넘게 팔았으면, 모든 활동을 접고 휴양지에서 안락한 삶을 즐기며 지낼 것 같은데 여러분 생각은 어떠신지요? 그럼 좋은 한주 보내십시오.

How You Remind Me – Nickelback Their first song that made them famous, there were some songs like “Someday” that was just as popular, but it just made them less attractive, since their songs were all similar. At least the first one made a global impact. 처음으로 유명세를 탄 노래로, 그 후 Someday 라는 노래도 흥했지만, 노래들이 대부분 비슷한 패턴을 따 르면서 매력을 잃게 되었습니다. 하 지만 이 노래가 처음 발표 되었을 때 는 너무나도 신선해서 전세계를 뒤 흔들었습니다.

Top Five Temples in South Korea: 대한민국에서 손꼽히는 다섯 개의 절 Article by Elizabeth Somerville Translation by Yoon Hae-jin

With a long history of Buddhism, and about a quarter of the population identifying as such in the 2005 national census, South Korea has over 900 Buddhist temples across the nation. Many of these are nestled within the country’s mountains, in locations believed to have the best “feng shui” of the area. As a result, these temples provide a haven and a welcome escape from Korea’s bustling cities.

However, this doesn’t mean they are difficult to get to, as most are readily accessible by the country’s efficient bus network.

오랜 불교 역사를 자랑하며 2005년 조사에 따르면 인구의 25%가 불교인 대한민국에는 전국에 900개가 넘는 절이 있습 니다. 이 중 다수가 산에 위치하며 풍수지리상 명당이라고 불 리는 지역에 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 이 절들은 안식처를 제 공하며 한국의 북적거리는 도시로부터의 도피처를 제공해줍 니다. 한편 한국의 효율적인 버스노선을 이용해서도 절에 갈 수 있기 때문에 방문에 대한 부담감을 가질 필요는 없습니다.

Don’t let the vast number of temples daunt you.

Here’s a pick of the top five Buddhist temples to visit during your stay in the “land of the morning calm.” 수많은 절들에 압도당할 필요는 없습니다. 필자는 ‘조용한 아침의 나라’를 방문하는 동안 꼭 가봐야 할 5개의 절을 선정 해봤습니다.

Beomeosa: 범어사

Beomeosa Temple, in the busy port city of Busan, was one of the largest temples built under the Silla Dynasty. It was completely burnt down during the Japanese invasion of 1592, but reconstructed in 1613. At its largest, it had over 360 rooms and more than 1,000 monks in residence. Nowadays, it’s one of the country’s busiest and most popular temples for tourists to visit and is easily accessible by bus from Beomeosa Subway Station in Busan. 범어사는 제1의 항구도시 부산에 위치해있으며 신라시대에 지어진 가장 큰 절 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 1592년 일제의 침략에 의해 완전히 타버렸으나 1613년에 재건되었다. 최고 규모였 던 당시 360개 이상의 방이 있었고 천명 이상의 중이 살았다. 오늘날에는 국내에서 가장 인기 있으며 관광객들로부터 호응 을 얻는 절 중 하나이며 부산 지하철 범어사역에서 버스를 타 고 갈 수도 있다.

Bulguksa: 불국사

Easily accessible from Gyeongju, Bulguksa Temple is considered a masterpiece of Buddhist art. The temple itself has been destroyed by fire and theft many times over the years, but has since been restored to its former glory, all in historical accuracy. Bulguksa contains 7 national treasures, including Dabotap and Seokgatap stone pagodas.

Make sure to visit Seokguram Grotto nearby by catching the regular shuttle bus between the two. 경주의 불국사는 불교 예술의 절정이라는 평가를 받는다. 불국사는 불에 탄 적이 있으며 여러 차례의 강탈에 신음했으 나 다시 예전의 영광을 되찾았다. 불국사에는 다보탑과 석가 탑을 포함해 일곱 개의 국보가 있다. 셔틀버스가 있으니 근처 에 있는 석굴암을 방문하는 것도 추천한다.

Haeinsa: 해인사

Situated within Gayasan National Park, Haeinsa Temple sits high up in the mountains surrounded by forest. First built in 802 and renovated numerous times since, Haeinsa is considered one of the three “Jewel Temples” of South Korea, along with the Tongdosa and Songgwangsa Temples.

In 1995 it made the UNESCO World Heritage List along with the “Tripitaka Koreana”—81,258 woodblock carvings of Buddhist scripture that are housed within the Janggyeon Panjeon complex (the oldest part of the temple). Miraculously, these woodblocks survived the fire in 1817 that destroyed most of the temple complex, as well as the Japanese invasion. 가야산 국립공원에 위치한 해인사는 숲에 둘러 쌓여 높은 산에 위치해있다. 802년에 지어져 그 이후로 여러 차례 수리 된 해인사는 통도사와 송광사와 함께 대한민국의 3보 사찰 중 하나이다. 1995년에는 절 내 가장 오래된 부분인 장경판전에 보관되어있는 팔만대장경과 함께 유네스코세계문화유산에 등 재되었다. 1817년에 절 대부분을 태워버린 화재와 일제의 침 략에도 불구하고 기적적으로 보존되었다.

Tongdosa: Haedong Yonggungsa: 해동 용궁사

Another temple within reach of Busan is Haedong Yonggungsa. Built on the northeast coast of Busan, the temple is one of the few built on the shoreline. This makes for superb ocean views, but be sure to arrive early to make the most of them as this temple gets busy, especially during the warmer months and around public holidays and festivals. 부산 주변에 또 하나의 절 해동 용궁사가 있다. 부산 북동쪽 해변에 지어졌으며 해변에 위치한 몇 개 안 되는 절 중 하나 다. 아름다운 바다 전망이 있으나 따뜻한 계절이나 명절 혹은 축제 때 붐비므로 최대한으로 즐기기 위해서는 연휴를 피해 가길 권한다.

통도사

Tongdosa is Korea’s largest temple and is often referred to as “the temple without a Buddha” as there are no outdoor statues of Buddha on the temple grounds. Instead, the temple is arranged around several stupahs (mounds), which are believed to contain the relics of the Sakayamuni Buddha, including his robe, begging bowl and a bone from his skull. Tongdosa is considered a national treasure and is another one of Korea’s three Jewel Temples.

통도사는 국내에서 가장 큰 절이며 절에 부처상이 없어 ‘부 처님 없는 절’로 알려지기도 했다. 대신 절은 석가모니의 옷, 구걸용 그릇과 머리뼈 등의 유물이 숨겨져 있다고 전해지는 여러 개의 언덕에 둘러싸여 있다. 통도사는 국보로 지정되어 있으며 대한민국의 3보 사찰이다. elizabeth.r.somerville@gmail.com

4. 정말 멋진 비전을 가지신 것 같습니다. 하지만 현실적 으로 어려움도 많았을 텐데요. 허그인을 시작하시면서 힘든 일은 없으셨나요?

Sounds like an awesome vision. But I guess there must have been some practical problems while struggling to launch HugIn. Didn’t you have to strive to realize your goal?

뚜렷한 특색 있는 카페들이 많은 시대다. 음악 듣는 라이브 카페, 책 읽는 북 카페, 염색하러 가는 염색 카페 등 각양각 색의 카페들이 많다. 그러나 ‘나눔 카페’에 대해 들어본 사람 은 많지 않을 것이다. 허그인(HugIN)은 나눔의 가치에 공감 하는 청년들이 창업한 카페로서, 더 많은 사람들과 그 가치를 함께 나누고, 전파할 수 있게끔 만든 나눔 문화 플랫폼이다.

9월말에 런칭을 앞둔 허그인의 신성국 대표를 만나 인터뷰를 나눠보았다.

These days, there are many cafes with their own distinctive characteristics. For example, there are rock (or live) cafes, book cafes, and dying cafes (in which you can get your hair dyed). But I guess many of the readers probably haven’t heard about the “sharing” cafe. “HugIn” is a cafe launched by young entrepreneurs who sympathize with the value of sharing. They aim to establish the cafe as a platform through which the value of the sharing culture can be disseminated. We have interviewed Sung Gook Shin, CEO of HugIn, to share its mission and vision.

1. 허그인은 정확히 어떤 색다른 성격을 지닌 카페인가요?

What are the distinctive characteristics of HugIn that set itself apart from other types of cafes? 허그인은 나눔을 즐기는 문화를 만들어가는 카페공간입니 다. 기본적으로 카페라는 플랫폼에 카페메뉴는 물론이고, 누 구나 나눔에 즐겁게 참여할 수 있도록 도와주는 다양한 콘텐 츠(모임, 행사, 교육 등)들을 담아낸 나눔 문화 창조 및 확산 플랫폼이에요.

HugIn is a cafe in which we can share the culture of sharing. Basically, there’s something more to the cafe than coffees sold at other cafes.

We have various cultural contents—meetings, events, education, etc.—that can instill in people a sharing culture.

2. ‘나눔의 가치’라고 하셨는데요, 허그인에서 말하는 ‘나 눔’은 어떤 의미를 지니고 있나요?

You keep saying the term “culture of sharing.”

In your opinion, what’s the implication behind the word “sharing”? 허그인이 말하는 나눔은 한마디로 넓은 의미의 재능 나눔 이라고 보시면 되요. 예를 들면 인디밴드가 자신의 음악적 재 능을 나누는 것처럼 개개인의 특수한 재능은 물론이고, 포옹 이나 칭찬처럼 일상 속에서 누구나 할 수 있는 나눔을 의미해 요. 나눔은 누구나 참여하고 누릴 수 있는 소중한 가치이며,

주는 사람과 받는 사람이 함께 행복해질 수 있는 놀라운 선물 이죠.

The meaning of “sharing” that HugIn advocates is about sharing of your talents. And sharing talents can be defined broadly. For example, it can include indie rock bands sharing their musical capability. But it also can mean hugging and applauding for others, which are activities that everyone can participate. We try to deliver the message that sharing is something that everyone can both participate and enjoy. Something that is surprising about sharing is that both the benefactors and the beneficiaries can be happy.

3. 구체적으로 어떻게 ‘나눔’의 가치를 전파하시는지요? 허그인만의 특별한 행사나 건물 디자인 (내부 구조)이 있나 요?

In what specific ways does HugIn disseminate the value of sharing? Is there something special about the events that HugIn holds or the interior design of HugIn? 나눔에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시하고, 긍정적인 변화를 선 물하기 위해 크게 세가지 나눔 프로젝트가 진행될 예정입니 다.

Three projects that will provide fresh perspectives for sharing and motivate people to take action for positive social change will be held in HugIn. 1. 허그인 아카데미 (나눔이 쉽고 재미있다는 인식을 심어 주는 교육 프로젝트).

2. 허그인 프라미스 (나눔을 지속적으로 실천할 수 있도록 도와주는 실천 프로젝트).

3. 허그인 네트워크 (나눔의 가치에 공감하는 사람들의 소 통과 협력의 장을 마련해주는 모임 프로젝트). 이를 통해서 많은 사람들이 나눔에 대해 쉽고 재미있다는 인식을 갖게 되면 좋겠습니다.

First, there is the “HugIn Academy,” in which the participants can realize that sharing is fun.

Second, there is the “HugIn Promise,” a project that can help participants to constantly engage in sharing activities.

Third, the “HugIn Network” will organize meetings in which people who sympathize with the value of sharing can communicate and cooperate with one another.

Through these specific projects and meetings,

시작부터 지금까지 힘들지 않은 적은 없어요. 힘든 과정 속 에서 버틸 수 있었던 것은 아름다운 세상을 향한 꿈과 열정, 그리고 수많은 사람들의 진심이 담긴 응원과 격려 덕분이었 던 것 같아요. 중간에 정말 마지막이라고 생각이 들 정도로 재정적으로 벼랑 끝까지 몰린 적도 있었는데요. 정말 신기했 던 건 그런 와중에도 내 꿈을 이루고 싶다는 생각이 끊이지 않았다는 거에요. 또한 진심으로 응원과 격려를 아끼지 않았 던 수많은 분들이 한 명씩 생각에 스쳐 지나가면서 정신을 차 릴 수 있었어요.

To be honest, there hasn’t been a time in which I thought it would be easy to launch this project.

But the reason I could hang on to my goal was that so many people supported me genuinely. In the middle of the progress, there has been a time in which the financial situation was so harsh that I even thought of ending this project. Surprisingly, however, such harsh situations couldn’t make me cease to pursue my goal. Moreover, people who supported me genuinely kept myself stimulated and endure. 제가 이 과정에서 얻은 가장 중요한 깨달음은 제가 변하기 시작하자 상황도 세상도 조금씩 변하기 시작했다는 거에요. 어떤 문제든, 해결의 열쇠는 제게 있었더군요.

The biggest lesson that I learned through this process was that the world changes as I change.

The key to any problem lies in myself.

영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby의 유용한 회화/이디엄 표현으로 영어실력 향상하기 Hello everyone! 강남역 셀리어학원의 영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby입니다. 이번 회에도 다양한 이디엄 표현을 소개시켜드릴 예정이며, 기억이 오래가도록 어떤 식으로 연상을 하면 될지도 알려드리겠습니다. 본지에 게시하는 이디엄 표현들은 제가 즐겨 사용하는 표현들로 이디엄 특성상 각 단어를 조합해서는 실제 의미를 알아내기가 어렵습니다. #1 : the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree (부전자전이다, 피는 못 속인다)

#2 : play up to one (누구에게 아부하다)

사과가 떨어져봐야 나무에서 그리 멀리 떨어지진 않듯이, 부모 혹은 가족을 닮았음 을 이야기 할 때 사용되는 표현입니다.

아부를 할 때는 당연히 상대방에게 원하는 것이 있기에 하는 것 아니겠습니까? play up to one은 저의를 갖고 칭찬이나 입에 발린 말을 하는 것을 의미합니다.

The father has had a drinking problem, and now, his son has it too. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. 아버지가 음주문제가 있는데, 이제는 아들도 똑 같은 문제를 갖고 있어. 부전자전이라더니...

We all hate Steve because he plays up to his boss to get a promotion. 우리는 승진하려고 상사에게 아부나 해대는 Steve를 싫어해.

#3 : pop the question (구혼하다)

#4 : take a crack at ~ (무엇을 시도해보다)

pop이라는 단어는 불쑥 나타나다, 꺼내다 등 불시에 어떤 일이 진행될 때 사용되며, 그래서 pop the question은 느닷없이 어떤 질문을 한다는 의미가 됩니다. “프러포 즈하다” 라는 의미에 pop the question이라는 표현이 사용되는 이유는 누구에게 청혼할 때 예를 들어 1주일 전에 “너한테 다음 주에 청혼할 거야.” 라고 미리 통보는 안 하기 때문입니다.

crack이라는 단어에는 속어체 표현으로 “시도”의 의미가 있습니다. (시도를 의미하 는 유사한 표현으로 chance, try, shot, whirl등 다양한 표현도 존재합니다.) 그래 서 take a crack at something이 “무엇을 시도해보다”라는 의미가 나오게 됩니다.

I took a crack at cooking, but I soon realized that I wasn’t born with the talent. 요리를 한번 시도해봤는데, 얼마 안 가서 요리의 재능이 나한테 없다는 것을 깨달았지.

I thought he would pop the question, but he just wanted to take me out to dinner. 나한테 청혼하는 줄 알았더니 그냥 저녁데이트에 초대한 것뿐이었어.

#5: up to someone (누구에게 달려있다, 누구 마음이다)

#6: water down (묽게 만들다)

up은 구어체 구동사(phrasal verb) 표현에서 “마음이 있는”이라는 의미도 있습니 다. 그렇기에 “Are you up for a drink tonight?”은 오늘 밤에 한잔 할 마음이 있는 지를 묻는 질문이 됩니다. 이러한 의미에서 be up to someone이 “누구의 마음에 달려있다”라는 의미가 되는 것입니다.

이 표현은 간단히 “물을 섞어서 (water) 농도가 내려가게 만들다(down)” 라고 연상 하시면 암기가 수월하게 될 것입니다.

Oh my God! Your coffee is too strong. You’d better water it down. 이런! 너 커피를 왜 이렇게 진하게 마시는 거니? 좀 연하게 마셔라.

What Tim did to you was just terrible. It’s up to you to accept him back.

Tim이 네게 저지른 일은 참 끔찍했어. 그를 다시 받아드릴지는 너한테 달려있어.

#7 : wishy-washy (우유부단한)

#8 : let one’s hair down (긴장을 풀다, 마음을 느긋하게 먹다)

“무엇 무엇을 했으면…” 하고 생각하다가 (wish) 머릿속에서 깔끔히 지워버리는 (wash) 과정이 반복되니 우유부단한 사람은 wishy-washy! (연상하기 좋도록 말 씀 드리는 것이지 실제 표현의 기원과는 아무런 관계가 없습니다!)

원래 이 표현의 직접적인 연상은 멋 내서 틀어 올렸던 머리를 풀어서 내린다는 의미 입니다. 오전에 출근을 하며 한껏 신경 써서 머리를 하고 나갔다가, 하루 일과가 종 료되어 집에 돌아오면 아무도 볼 사람이 없으니 편한 마음으로 머리를 풀어 내리고, 화장을 지우고... 전혀 다른 사람으로 변신을..(Huh?) 이와 같은 상황을 그리면 이 표현이 왜 긴장을 풀고 느긋하게 relax한다는 뉘앙스가 나오는지 쉽게 파악 및 각인 이 가능하시라 믿습니다.

He doesn’t deserve to be the boss. He’s very wishy-washy. 그는 상관이 될 자격이 없어. 그는 아주 우유부단한 타입이거든.

I can finally let my hair down since I don’t have to worry about the bills. 이제 돈 걱정은 할 필요가 없으니 한시름 놓아도 되겠네. *bills : 각종 청구서

#9 : get even with one (누구에게 복수하다)

#10 : from the bottom of one’s heart (진심으로)

아시다시피, even이라는 단어에는 "평등한, 공평한"이라는 의미도 있습니다. “누구 와 동등해지다”라는 연상에서 "누구에게 복수하다"라는 의미가 자연스럽게 파생되 는 것입니다.

마음(heart)의 밑바닥(bottom)으로부터 무엇이 나온다는 연상이니 마음속에서 우 러나오는 상황이 쉽게 그려지시리라 생각됩니다.

I felt so insulted when she slapped me in the face in public, so I waited for 4 years to get even with her. 그녀가 사람 다 있는 곳에서 내 뺨을 때렸을 때 나는 엄청난 모욕감을 느꼈고, 그래 서 그녀에게 복수하기 위해서 장장 4년을 기다렸어.

I thanked her from the bottom of my heart when she found and returned my phone. I had all my important contacts in that phone. 그녀가 내 핸드폰을 찾아줬을 때 나는 그녀에게 진심으로 고마워했어. 중요한 연락 처가 모두 그 핸드폰에 들어있었거든.
