The Seongbuk Cultural Foundation is to host a book festival on September 28 from 11AM to 5:30PM at the Samseon Children’s Park near Hansung University.

Diverse exhibitions and programs are scheduled for the event.

Kang Shin-ju, author of “Time for Philosophy,” will be present at the festival to interact with readers.

Calorie intake is determined by each individual’s gut bacteria*, the Daily Mail also reported. As a result, digestion of identical foods always varies for each person.

Such results may explain why some people have more difficulty losing weight than others. For example, a natural excess of highly efficient calorie-absorbing bacteria may be prominent in obese people.

The Medical Daily has reported a new study on calorie counting, stating it is virtually meaningless because of the diversity of the human metabolic system*.

The report wrote that calorie intake is largely determined by the different digestive processes of each individual rather than the ascribed value of each food product.

Researchers of the study noted that much of the current nutritional data can no longer be considered accurate because it is based on outdated values measured in the 19th century. “[People] engage in a kind of tug-of-war with the food we eat, a battle in which we are measuring the spoils—calories—all wrong,” biologist Rob Dunn of North Carolina State University explained

According to a report by the Medical Daily, smokers can return their body to a normal state, cleansing themselves of the toxic chemicals prominent in cigarettes after 15 years.

The report was written by the American Cancer Society and Dr. James K. Min, director of Cardiac* Imaging Research and codirector* of Cardiac Imaging at the Department of Medicine, Imaging and Biomedical Sciences at CedarsSinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles.

Dr. Min and Dr. Rine Nakanishi presented their results at the European Society of Cardiology.

Around 2.1 percent of participants experienced heart attacks or death during their two-year study. Active smokers had rates of heart attack or death twice as high as neversmokers. Ex-smokers had the same rates as never-smokers. However, they had a high prevalence of severe coronary artery disease (CAD)*.

A Zimbabwean woman, Betty Mbereko, 40, plans to marry her only son, claiming to be in love with each other.

She has confirmed that she is almost seven months pregnant and is expecting her son’s child.

Having been widowed for the past 12 years, Mbereko has been living with her son Farai Mbereko, 23.

She decided to marry her son because she does

not want to marry her late husband’s younger brothers due to them coveting* her.

She admitted that the affair started three years ago to a village court in Masvingo.

Betty argued that she alone had the right to her son Farai’s money after spending on his education following the death of her husband. She said no other woman was entitled to it.

Farai was also reported to be willing to marry

his mother.

“I know my father died before he finished paying the bride price* and I am prepared to pay it off,” he said.

The local headman of the council warned them to call off the marriage or leave the village. The Mberekos chose the latter and have left the village to an undisclosed* location.

A recent study presented to the European Society of Cardiology’s annual congress in Amsterdam showed that listening to rock music is just as good as classical music for cardiac health*, proof that genre does not matter.

The Medical Daily quoted the study, saying that “which genre helps the heart the most, it’s different for everybody. Classical music is commonly thought of as good and not rock music,

but certain kinds of music do not have a universal effect.”

It further wrote, “Listening to music corresponded* with an increase in cardiac function and exercise capacity.”

"When we listen to our favorite music, our brain releases endorphins, and this improves our vascular health,” lead author Delijanin Ilic said, explaining the benefit.

As each individual’s brain responds differently, the hormonal release is mostly subjective*, the study showed.

Ilic added, “There is no ideal music for everybody. Patients should choose music which increases positive emotions and makes them happy or relaxed."

Time travel may no longer be just a part of science fiction, Dr. Brian Cox, a particle physicist* at the University of Manchester, said to the Daily Mail September 15.

“Can you build a time machine?” Dr. Cox spoke at the British Science Festival. “The answer is yes.”

He explained that the theory only works when traveling to the future and is not possible to return.

He added that it would be possible for humans to travel to the future if technology advanced enough to accelerate larger objects.

However, such technology does not exist yet, and will never be able travel to the past.

“You can go into the future; you've got almost total freedom of movement in the future,” said Cox.

A Chinese joint venture with Kia Motors Corp. was ordered to recall a total of 18,135 K5 sedans because of faulty wheels, a Chinese consumer quality regulator said on September 17.

-The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine* posted on its website that Dongfeng Yueda Kia Motor started recalling the vehicles produced between September 7, 2012 and December 31, 2012.

According to the statement, the problem with the wheel hubs may cause them to break by a strong impact when there is insufficient tire pressure.

Reports of injuries were not immediately known due to the faulty wheels.

DongfengYuedaKia Motor is a joint venture of Kia with Dongfeng Motor Corp. and Jiangsu Yueda Investment Co.

Korea is planning to initiate exports of local beef to Hong Kong and other countries, officials from the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF) said on September 13.

Korean beef is locally known as “Hanwoo.”

The NACF, better known as Nonghyup in Korea, said its Hoengseong branch employees met with local importers in Hong Kong.

An official from the federation said, “I understand Hoengseong officials recently made a trip to Hong Kong for the start of exports to Chinese-speaking countries and received a very positive response from local importers.”

Heongseong, a town located in Gangwon

Province, is known for beef production on the peninsula. The town is around 130 kilometers east of Seoul.

The official also noted the only major problem for Hanwoo exports is that Korea has yet to regain the foot-and-mouth* (FMD) free status after the outbreak in 2011. The disease affects cattle and other animals, such as pigs and sheep.

Local importers in Hong Kong said small shipments are still possible before Korea regains FMD-free status. As such, cooperatives from Hoengseong are expected to start exports of Hanwoo soon.

Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food

and Rural Affairs said Korea is expected to regain FMD-free status within the first half of next year with vaccination from the World Organization for Animal Health.

Despite concerns over high prices of Hanwoo, the Hoengseong official assured the price may be formidable* in the global premium beef market, adding that top quality Hanwoo is currently priced at 120,000 won (US$110.46). Its regional competitor would be Wagyu (Japanese beef), currently sold for over 180,000 to almost 200,000 won (US$166 to $184) in Hong Kong.

Hyundai Rotem is seeking to list its shares on the main bourse in October at the earliest, the company said Monday.

To that end, the railway vehicle manufacturing arm of Hyundai Motor Group submitted an application Monday for an initial public offering (IPO), a primary step for the listing, to the Financial Supervisory Service.

The company plans to offer the stock for between 17,000 won and 23,000 won per share, with the aim of raising more than 600 billion won, which would make the listing the biggest IPO this year. Market watchers expect the company’s market capitalization to be around 1 trillion won

after the listing.

“Hyundai Rotem thought about delaying the listing to next year as the stock market was poor.

But it is pushing its original plan of listing this year,” a source said.

Hyundai Motor holds the largest share in the company, 57.64 percent, while Morgan Stanley’s private equity fund is the second largest shareholder with 42.36 percent.

In April, the firm requested the Korea Exchange to have an initial review for an IPO, to see whether it met requirements to become a publiclytraded firm. But it suspended the listing procedure when stock prices plummeted in the summer.

“As the company makes a stable profit, we hope we can raise the money we are expecting through the IPO. The listing on the main bourse will help develop Hyundai Rotem as a global company,” an official said.

The firm recorded 3.1 trillion won in sales and 175 billion won in operating profit last year. In the first half of this year, it had 1.4 trillion won in sales and 93 billion won in operating profit, a 7.6 percent and 33.8 percent increase, respectively, from over the same period last year.

K-pop lovers to flock to Gyeongju for Hallyu Dream Festival K-pop 팬들, ‘한류 드림 페스티벌’ 위해 경주에 모여라 Article by Moon O-hyun Translation by Yoon Hae-jin

The annual Hallyu Dream Festival will hold its fourth annual event in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province on October 5 to 6.

The K-pop Cover Dance Festival and the Hallyu Dream Concert will be included, as well as cultural awareness events.

The Dream Concert will begin on the second day of the festival, with famous K-pop acts expected to appear like TVXQ, 4Minute, Sistar, Crayon Pop, 2AM, KARA, T-ara, Ailee, UKiss, A-Pink, Davichi, A-Jag, BTOB and much more.

The Cover Dance Concert will take place on the first day of the Festival. Korean and international K-pop lovers will perform on stage in front of the

audience to show their knowledge of K-pop.

Chosen by fans in online preliminary matches, the Dance Festival participants will have regional team matches, the performances being assessed by a panel of expert judges composed of well-known choreographers*, musicians and commercial directors. Regional offline match winners will participate in the final contest, an opportunity for them to appear on stage during the Hallyu Dream Festival.

The K-pop Cover Dance Festival attracted 2,000 online submissions from 73 countries. Participants created and uploaded videos of themselves performing cover dances to their favorite K-pop

songs. The top 10 teams were invited to perform and compete this year Gyeongju.

With cooperation from the Korea Entertainment Producers Association* and sponsorship by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism*, Gyeongju is again hosting the event to promote culture and tourism.

Park Jin-young, the founder of JYP Entertainment, announced his wedding via Twitter on September 16, surprising netizens.

Park tweeted on Monday, “I’m getting married on October 10 to a girl who’s nine years younger.”

“We were attracted to each other at first sight,” said Park, explaining how he met his fiancée.

“[She] wanted to live a quiet life,” he said, admitting it took time for him to win her heart.

He recently composed* a song “Only You” for his future wife and hoped that the public would respect her privacy.

“The wedding will be a quiet affair with just our close friends and family,” Park said.

"What's Going On?"

T

he 1971 hit single by R&B musician Marvin Gaye is an eminently relatable song to us in these troubled times. Not that troubled times are a new thing; as Mark Twain said, history may not repeat itself exactly but it does rhyme. But he was not talking about limericks. The writer is sure many Koreans feel the same way as they watch the news and pore over their morning editions of Chosun, Donga, or JoongAng. Yet another piece of vicious political machination, another scandalous ouster of a public servant. Prosecutor General Chae is the latest to bite the dust. The Chosun Ilbo has pulled off a stunning hatchet job, living up to its reputation as the country's most illustrious daily, our national "newspaper of record." The U.S. has the New York Times (the Grey Lady, as it is fondly called) and the Washington Post; the U.K. has The Times and the Guardian; the French have Le Figaro and Le Monde; and we have the Chosun, a broadsheet that took upon itself the task of discrediting Mr. Chae, who was five months into his job and investigating the relative non-issue of a country's intelligence outfit deliberately and extensively interfering in its own domestic elections. Mr. Chae also spearheaded efforts to finally get former President Chun Doo-hwan, famously living out his twilight days in \290,000-in-the-bank indigence, after a rather distinguished presidency, to cough up punitive fines that he and his ilk had been dodging since 1997.

The spectacle of liberals and reformists sympathizing with this country's chief prosecutor is an improbable one; that the office has come to symbolize political opportunism and corruption rather than service of justice has been a constant reminder of the constitutional flaws of this young republic. But the National Intelligence Service (NIS), our premier spy agency, tasked with gathering sensitive and critical data for national security and monitoring enemy infiltration, appears to have flown under the radar. In short, we citizens are coming to terms with the news that another house of vital importance has to be put in order, even as its resourceful operators and vested allies in the establishment have been putting up impressive resistance, most notably savvily exploiting the United Progressive Party Representative Lee Seok-ki treason case in the best retrograde traditions of McCarthyism, and making history in the form of Justice Minister

Hwang ordering an inspection of a sitting prosecutor general, and that too for a personal affair. It was an unprecedented event, and an unsubtle message from the government: resign.

Which he promptly did on Friday. The NIS has made itself clear; it will brook no interference in its ways. Mr. Chae and the Chosun are set to establish the latest understandings of libel and yellow journalism in a courtroom. A rudderless department of justice worries for its future, its autonomy and impartiality under serious threat.

And the president's leadership in this issue is nowhere to be seen. Certainly the justice ministry's move could not have been a kneejerk reaction. How much of it was orchestrated by the top echelons? The Park government had expressed dissatisfaction with Mr. Chae before, branding him an appointee of the Lee Myung-bak presidency. What's going on? Further speculation would only disgust the Korean public. This is not the change people voted for last December.

Political incompetence is a minor sin, but dereliction of constitutional obligations and a refusal to uphold the democratic integrity of a republic, particularly when one of the world's worst tyrannies sits massed just above us is unforgivable.

Russian diplomacy - an exercise in meaningful opposition Recent diplomatic developments around Syria, chiefly the latest Russian initiative suggest a handy blueprint for those aspiring to exercise constructive opposition in the international relations hierarchy. Interestingly, the impetus for the Russian proposal to, in lieu of taking military action against Bashar al-Assad, arrange for his regime to hand over his chemical weapons arsenal to an international commission under UN auspices came from unguarded comments made by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who unwittingly gave Assad a way out when he said Assad would avoid military strikes only if he surrendered his entire chemical arms stockpile. President Putin and his very capable foreign minister Sergei Lavrov took him at his word and excused a reluctant would-be belligerent in the White House from policing duties, who made novel use of congressional approval as a stalling tactic. The prospect of a Franco-U.S. cruise missile barrage on Syrian government forces and installations

seems to have been averted for now. Turkey's Erdogan has been left in the lurch, having sided with force deployment all along.

Undoubtedly one of the last leaders you would entrust the defense of international law and principles to is Vladimir Putin, a man who was quite happy to roll tanks into Georgia in 2008 without UN Security Council approval.

He is also partly responsible for the conflict in question, supplying heavy weaponry to prop up his ally Assad - whose father Hafez (of 1982 Hama massacre fame) was also a Soviet client and foiling at every turn motions at the Security Council simply condemning Assad's brutality.

Such duplicity notwithstanding, Russia's concern for international law is welcome because the proposition that the use of chemical weapons is an unacceptable red line is necessarily valid (especially from our - Seoul's - standpoint), even if it does appear arbitrary and absurd given the scale of humanitarian suffering - more than 100,000 dead - that for various reasons of realpolitik have not merited military intervention thus far.

Admittedly the situation is complicated by the sectarian landscape and the balance of power between the powerbrokers of the region - Shia Iran and the largely Sunni Arab world. If the likes of (Shiite) Hezbollah are backing (secular and Alawi) Damascus, the moral case for backing the (Sunni) rebels is sharply diminished when various al Qaeda affiliates and extremist mercenaries are fighting and committing atrocities at the rebels' behest.

Military strike or not, there is no end in sight for the violence yet as no party wishes to see a repeat of Libya, i.e. the absence of viable democratic alternatives in the wake of a deposed regime. As for Russia, its foreign policy until now had, much like China's, focused on projecting power through obstruction, saying no to American interests and exercising vetoes. But Putin has saved the day for many by shrewdly finding that elusive intersection of hard-nosed pragmatism and normative principle. hkw1990@naver.com

The hazards of SNS to human interaction

As I am sitting and staring at my laptop, working on this weekly newspaper, writing, editing, rewriting and double-checking any errors in punctuation, spelling and facts, I notice other people chatting, sipping their ice-cold drinks.

But what I see most these days is though people get together for a casual round of gossip about their friends and boyfriends (or girlfriends), they cannot simply put down their smartphones without playing a few rounds of Anipang or checking their Facebook, whether to see new posts and comment/like them or to update their status.

Even the girl, who I assume is with her boyfriend, has both her hands on her Galaxy, holding it sideways while her boyfriend looks on.

Not only is it the problem with the number of games that are widely available. Text messaging,

now that it is virtually free of charge, is no longer called “texting” in Korea, but called “KaTalk” (a Korean abbreviation of “Kakao Talk”).

matters nowadays. Or perhaps, that’s what mattered since the beginning of human evolution.

After all, we are “social beings.”

The problem is also increasing overseas. For example, a girl invites her friends to a slumber party. In the good ol’ days, such get-togethers easily picture them gossiping while gnawing on some snacks and sipping their homemade beverages, whether alcoholic or not.

It would be wonderful to see people take selfcontrol over their gadgets and not let it get in the way of real socializing. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and all those other social networking sites (not to mention, the humor sites I admitted to visit quite frequently), are dragging us down from developing closer relationships.

The reality is, they barely talk to each other, their eyes locked on display screens of smartphones, MacBooks, PCs or tablets. By the way, it’s the same with boys and girls.

I myself occasionally look into my phone, “randomly” looking at funny posts on 9GAG or iFunny (Reddit is also a great site).

A Globetrotter in Korea

eet Luke R. Elie. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, and currently at age 32, Luke has been in Korea for most of his time since 1996. Though he first came to Korea on his parents’ missionary trip, he currently focuses on doing CTI work, anytime he’s not relaxing at a nearby café, or playing basketball at Yonsei University or on the US Base.

H

ow long have you been playing basketball?

Why did you start? Did you play college or pro? (explain your basketball experience in general) I think I was born with a basketball in my hand.

I have always played to my knowledge. I love the game. I grew up watching my older sisters play basketball and I wanted to do it as well. I played in high school in Korea. I went on to play college ball in the states and spent time playing pro ball in China.

hat is CTI and why/how did you start it?

Did you found it alone?

CTI is Coaches Team International. It was started as a just a basketball club team in Korea made up of international school coaches who wanted to play together and help high school players play against higher level competition. The original club team had no intentions of turning into CTI. However, I resurrected the name and changed it in order to get into NK. CTI was officially launched 16 months ago in Beijing, China. I just recently moved back to Korea to operate here.

C

TI seems like it’s about more than just a sport. Why is it important to those that participate?

CTI’s mission is simple: to encourage players, coaches and fans to develop their body, mind and spirit through the love of sports. We have a variety of programs that serve different purposes but we hope that all who participate will grow physically or athletically in their sport. But we also give much attention to the spirit inside of all of us and encourage people to develop their faith and become solid coaches and leaders.

W

hat are some of CTI’s biggest newsworthy accomplishments?

Obviously our biggest accomplishment has been taking the first team to NK in 2012 (Sorry, Rodman was not the first as they boast).

This summer we had a unique border game in Dandong, China (overlooking NK). Our American Coaches team competed there.

W

hat are some of CTI’s smaller equally meaningful accomplishments?

I am excited about launching the High5 program this summer. This is our outreach program of CTI. This is for helping less fortunate kids learn basketball and have fun with our athletes. We have had a chance to play the best teams in China.

I am proud that we have helped players gain status on our basketball tours and now have professional contracts and college scholarships.

ou made headlines when you and your team went to North Korea last year. Why did you originally want to go to North Korea?

Did you fulfill that purpose? During the trip, what was your most memorable moment or the most memorable aspect of the trip?

There were many different sports organizations that desired to get into NK and I chose to make their dreams my own and start the process. That is when Project uNKnown was born and thus CTI was created to officially meet that need. The North Korean people need help, but they also love sports, especially basketball. I wanted to get in there and truly make a difference and begin something that is ongoing.

Getting in there the first time was a huge accomplishment for us. The team toured, played games and taught kids. Our coaches were professional and truly loved the opportunity. The most memorable part of the trip was purely just being there. Every player and coach will have something different to say, but as the director I was just happy to see the interaction between the players and locals. Giving high fives to everyone was a highlight for me.

permission to return and do our work. Although China was a great alternative.

H

ow can our readers participate in CTI or help out? I saw on the website that people can donate. What does donation money go to?

Since the new CTI is new to Seoul again, we would love for people to get the word out about who we are. We certainly want to get the community involved in our many programs and events. We do accept donations. The reason for the donations is that myself and the other fulltime staff do not get paid for what we do. We are purely living on faith and trusting that people will come through to help us out in what we do.

So far, I have not gone hungry and rent money always shows up. I cannot thank people enough for their support and belief in what I do. I’ve been told I am crazy for living like this, but I would be truly crazy if I passed up this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people.

This week I would like to talk about some artists that have changed. Most likely in a bad way. I’m not talking about the misconducts or felonies they have committed but in their musical sense. Music artists have always been notorious for being lustful, violent and misuse of alcohol or drugs. Numerous have even died or had to go to rehab, but the cruel audiences don’t really care of the artist’s welfare.

We are always hungry for more good music.

Now here are some artists who became complete failures in my perspective. 안녕하십니까? 보나파이드 입니다. 이번 주에는 도태된 아 티스트들에 대해 말쓸드리려 합니다. 아티스트들이 범죄를 일 으키거나 도덕적으로 그릇된 행위를 했다기 보다는 음악성을 잃었다는 것입니다. 아티스트들은 호탕하고 호전적이고 때로 는 술과 마약을 남용하는 경우도 많습니다. 수많은 아티스트 들이 숨을 거두기도하고 재활원에 들어가기도 하는데요, 어떻 게 보면 잔인한 시청자들은 그들의 건강보다는 그들이 선사해 주는 재미에 더 관심이 많은 것 같습니다. 자 이제 그럼 완전 실패를 맛본 아티스트들을 소개해보겠습니다.

First of all, I’m sorry but Lil Kim, you have gone way down deep. She has been a side chick of Notorious B.I.G and his artists which seems legit since Biggie was a living legend. She had some great songs featuring and was noticed for being talented. She even features in one of my favorite Biggie song “Make Money”. Her down fall started from her featuring on Korean singer Se7en’s song “Girls” Oh my god I really wanted to split their heads open just to dump out the trash that they filled it with. SO HORRIBLE! I actually saw se7en in a club in New York once, and I thought it was gay, and Lil Kim you featured for him already and I heard you featured for G-Dragon recently.

You either desperate of money, or you just pure Wack! 첫째로 릴킴씨, 미안합니다만 당신은 너무 깊은 수렁에 빠 졌습니다. 한때 노토리어스 비아이지의 연인이며 아티스트이 기도 했던 당신은 멋졌습니다. 특히나 비기는 그 당시 전설적 인 랩퍼였으니까요. 그녀는 정말 재능과 끼가 다분한 아티스 트였는데 한국가수 세븐의 노래에 피쳐링하면서부터 끝이 보 이기 시작했습니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 비기 노래 중 “Make Money”에도 피쳐링했던 사람이 세븐의 미국진출 시도 곡 “Girls”에 피쳐링 하다니 정말 경악을 금치 못했습니다. 세븐 을 뉴욕클럽에서 본적이 있는데요, 이 노래를 소개하는 무대 였는데 정말 실망스러웠습니다. 릴킴은 얼마전에 지드래곤과 같은 무대를 서기도 했다는데 정말 돈이 떨어진건지 정신이 나간건지 모르겠습니다.

Snoop dogg, I mean Snoop Lion. You seem to a living legend rapping on Dr.Dre, but you are a diminishing star, and which is why I barely put you in my Top 10 rappers alive. It was when you started the show Snoop dogg’s Fatherhood a reality show of showing Snoop’s life at home, and when you did songs like “sexual Eruption” and featured for Pussycat dolls on “Buttons”. Then you say you go to Jamaica and had a spiritual experience and changed your lifestyle and name?! Okay, I can’t

judge someone’s belief or religion, but I sure can judge your music Uncle snoop. You’re idea of no more violence but love as a theme of your song is great but your new songs SUCK! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? 스눕독, 아니 스눕라이언은 닥터드레와 함께 전설을 만들었 던 사람인데 이제 당신도 지는 별이 됐군요. 그래서 그런지 저 의 상위 10위 살아있는 랩퍼중에 당신은 겨우 한자리를 차지 했습니다. 스눕독은 티비쇼 Fatherhood에서부터 자신의 삶 을 보여주는 리얼리티쇼에서부터 점점 도태되는 모습을 보여 주더니 노래 “Sexual Eruption” 이랑 푸시캣돌의 “Buttons” 라는 노래에 참여하면서 빛의속도로 추락하기 시작했습니다. 그러던 어느 날 자메이카에 가서 영적인 경험을 한 후에 이름 을 바꾸고 노래 스타일을 바꾸기 시작했습니다. 물론 누구의 믿음과 종교를 주제로 논할 순 없지만, 노래만큼은 제 마음대 로 평론하겠습니다. 폭력 대신 사랑과 평화를 노래하는 취지 는 좋지만 당신의 새 노래들은 그냥 쓰레기라고 해도 무방합 니다. 스눕독 삼촌, 도대체 뭐 하는 겁니까?

And finally Yes. Lil Wayne. Honestly, skill wise he is very talented but he has issues. A very short MC that has much legacy from “hot boyz” and YMCMB (Young Money Cash Money Billionaires) with some ferocious tattoos up to his face and piercings that reminds me of a leprechaun.

His voice is very unique and he has experimented quite a bit to reach his status. However, he featured for pretty much any pop artist out there being a featuring whore and as you know the more you feature, the less likely to have good lines. Eminem is famous for being hard to ask to feature in songs, which is why his lyrics are time well spent and good quality. Which this ferocious rapper could do the same. 그리고 마지막으로 릴웨인. 솔직히 실력면에서는 아주 탁월 하지만 뭔가 문제가 많습니다. ‘핫보이즈’와 YMCMB등의 그 룹에서 활동한 뼈대 있는 랩퍼지만 얼굴까지 올라오는 문신과 피어싱들이 그를 무슨 조그만 레프로컨처럼 보이게 합니다. 목소리는 아주 독특하고 정말 많은 연구와 연습으로 지금 그 자리까지 올라가게 됐습니다. 하지만 피쳐링을 하도 많이 하 고 다녀서, 희소성도 없고 그만큼 헛점이 많아지게 되었습니 다. 아무래도 이리저리 다 가사를 써주면 그만큼 시간투자를 할 수 없으니까요. 그에 비해 에미넴은 섭외하기 아주 어렵기 로 소문이 나있습니다. 그렇기에 항상 좋은 가사와 노래를 선 사해주지 않습니까? 이 땅꼬마 랩퍼 릴웨인도 이것을 좀 배웠 으면 좋겠네요.

This week’s list is kind of special and awkward in the sense that I am posting songs that are HORRIBLE not the songs that I want you to hear.

You might ask the paradox of why share songs that are bad, but being aware and vigilant towards what is good and bad should be noticed by audiences.

3. Let it rock – Kevin Rudolf ft. Lil Wayne Another one of Lil Wayne’s featuring songs that was admirable because it was experimental, but a total failure. The song would have been much a better song without Lil Wayne’s verse. Lil Wayne KILLED IT. Literally… 수많은 릴웨인의 피쳐링 곡 중 하 나. 실험정신이 투철한 것은 대단하 지만 완벽한 졸작이라고 볼 수있습니 다. 차라리 릴웨인 부분이 없었으면 그나마 괜찮은 노래였을텐데 아쉽기 만 합니다.

Social Explorer Network Exploring Creative Marketing of Agricultural Food Product 창조적 농촌 마케팅 사례 탐구

By Han Soul 농업과 농산물을 떠오르면 ‘위기’라는 단어도 한국에서 덩달아 떠오르게 됩니다.. ‘농업의 위기’, ‘먹거리의

위기’ 등. 그리고 이러한 위기는 전세계적인 현상이지요. FTA 나 WTO와 같은 농업의 개방화를 요구하는 물결들로 인해, 그 리고 값싼 가격으로 농산물을 독과점하고 있는 몇몇 다국적 기 업들로 인해 전세계의 지역 단위의 소작농들이 위협받고 있지 요.

In Korea, when one think of the word “agriculture”, he/she can immediately relate to the word “crisis”. “Crisis of agriculture”, “crisis of Korean food product” are the words that we hear through the media. And such crisis is the crisis that the farmers from all around the globe share.

Because of the FTAs and WTOs that demand the lifting of the trade barriers, and the multinational corporations that monopolize (or oligopolize) the food products, local tenant farmers of the world are facing a threat to their livelihood. 물론 국내 정부와 세계 시장, 그리고 각국 간의 합의 구조가 바뀌지 않으면 근본적인 문제는 바뀌기 힘들겠지요. 하지만 '아 래에서부터 위로' 주도할 수 있는 농업 혁신의 길 또한 있지 않 을까요? 오늘은 농산물과 농촌을 혁신적인 방법으로 살리고 있 는 몇 가지 마케팅 사례들에 대해서 알아보겠습니다.

Of course, such trend is going to perpetuate unless the consus among nations and world market do not change. Period. But aren’t there any “bottom-up” solutions that can effect a change for the agricultural product of tenant farmers? Today, I am going to introduce some innovative marketing cases that fulfill such role. 과

1. 재난의 사과에서 희망의 사과로 전환된 아오모리현의 사

The apple of Aomori Prefacture: from the apple of a disaster to the apple of hope 아오모리현은 일본에 있는 한 지역인데, 우리나라의 대구처 럼 사과로 아주 유명한 곳입니다.

Aomoroi Prefacture is a region in Japan, and it is widely known as the main producers of apples (just like Daegu in Korea). 이런 아오모리현의 사과에도 위기가 불어닥친 적이 있다고 합니다. 1991년, 거대한 태풍이 아오모리현을 휩쓸고 갔는데

아오모리현에 있는 90% 사과가 이러한 자연재해로 인해 바닥 으로 떨어지고 말았다고 하네요. 평소 재배하는 사과의 10% 밖 에 팔 수 없기 때문에 수익이 1/10으로 떨어질 위기에 처한 것 이지요.

But Aomori Prefacture was not exempt from the natural disaster. In 1991, a giant typhoon passed right through the region, sweeping away 90% of Aomori’s apple. Because the farmers of Aomori could only sell 10% of the apples, they were going to earn a tenth of the revenue that they normally get. 하지만 단 하나의 아이디어가 아오모리현을 살리고 맙니다.

But one idea comes up from the farmer of Aomori, and save the region. 재해가 일어난 당시는 일본에서 수능 날짜가 얼마 남지 않았 던 때라고 합니다.

The disaster occurred right before the day of SAT (in Japan, like in Korea, the SAT occurrs only once in a month). 그리고 아오모리현에서는 10%의 남은 사과를 전국의 수능생 들과 수능생들과 연관된 사람을 타겟으로 잡게 되었지요. '희망 의 사과'라는 타이틀을 내걸고요. 비바람 속에서도 떨어지지 않 고 꿋꿋이 사과나무에 붙어있던 10% 사과를 먹고 힘든 수능도 잘 버텨내라는 메시지를 전해줄 수 있는 멋진 선물이 되었지요. 그리고 아오모리현의 사과는 비록 평소 재배하는 10%의 사과 만을 팔았지만 이러한 메시지로 91년에도 수익에 타격이 없었 다고 하네요.

The farmers of the Aomori decided to target solely on the test-takers and the people that pertains to these test-takers. They labeled their apples as “apple of hope”. The “apple of hope” symbolized hope because they were the apples of 10% that hung on, even when the storms swept the others away.

Thus, it had a potential to send a cheerful message to the test-takers. Due to such brilliant idea, Aomori farmers didn’t face decrease from their normal revenue (despite the fact that they could only sell 10% of what they had normally sold).

2. 농사와 예술을 결합한 '쌈지농부'

Ssamzie Farmer: Combining Art and Agriculture ‘농사가 예술이다’라는 철학으로 소외된 것을 아름답게 하

는 문화/예술 콘텐츠 기획, 디자인 컨설팅, 친환경 유기농 가게 ‘농부로부터’ 등을 실현하고 있습니다.

Ssamzie Farmer follow the philosophy that “agriculture is an art”. With such principle, we polish the value of agricultural product distanced from the public. Our work to fulfill such role include: cultural/artistic planning of contents, design consulting, managing organic foodstore (“From Farmers”). 다음 소개해드릴 예는 한국의 아주 멋진 기업, 쌈지농부인데 요.

The next example that I will introduce is the “Ssamzie Farmer”, an enterprise in Korea.

쌈지농부를 시작하게 된 천호균 대표는 '쌈지'라는 국내 패션 브랜드 (인사동에 있는 '쌈지길'로 유명하지요)를 시작했던 사 람인데요. 농사와 예술이 지닌 공통점에 흠뻑 빠져서 쌈지농부 를 시작하게 되었다고 합니다.

The founder of Ssamzie Farmer--Mr. Chun--is famous for having started the Korean fashion brand, “Ssamzie” (there’s also a “Ssamzie Road” in Insadong). He founded Ssamzie Farmer, because he was mesmerized by the commonality of agriculture and art. 필자는 농사와 예술이 공통점을 지녔다는 사실이 잘 이해가 안되었는데요. 깊이 생각을 해보니 무엇을 창조한다는 점, 생명 의 굽이치는 에너지를 다룬다는 점에서 참 비슷해 보였습니다.

When I first heard that there’s commanlity between the agriculture and art, I couldn’t fully comprehend such fact. But after deliberating on this matter, I could realize that both try to “create” something, and they deal with the energy of “lives”. 쌈지농부는 이러한 농사의 본질적 의미를 잘 살린 예술(그리 고 브랜딩)로 많은 소비자들이 이런 의미를 다시금 깨닫고 더 많이 국내 농산물을 구매하고 장려할 수 있도록 도와주고 있답 니다.

영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby의 유용한 회화/이디엄 표현으로 영어실력 향상하기 Hello everyone! 강남역 셀리어학원의 영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby입니다. 이번 회에도 다양한 이디엄 표현을 소개시켜드릴 예정이며, 기억이 오래가도록 어떤 식으로 연상을 하면 될지도 알려드리겠습니다. 본지에 게시하는 이디엄 표현들은 제가 즐겨 사용하는 표현들로 이디엄 특성상 각 단어를 조합해서는 실제 의미를 알아내기가 어렵습니다. #1 : get off one’s back (누구를 그만 귀찮게 하다)

#2 : stab someone in the back (누구의 뒤통수를 때리다)

누군가가 등에 찰싹 달라붙어서 잔소리를 해대면 아주 귀찮고 짜증나지 않겠습니 까? 이 표현은 남의 등에서 내려오는 연상을 하시면 됩니다.

우리말 누구의 뒤통수를 때린다는 표현과 놀랍게 흡사한 표현으로, 누구의 등뒤에 비수를 꼽는 연상을 하시면 완벽합니다. 누구를 배신하는 장면이 눈 앞에 그려지시 길 바랍니다.

I wish my mom would get off my back about slimming down. I love food! 엄마가 나보고 살 빼라고 그만 좀 들들 볶았으면 좋겠어. 나는 먹는 게 너무 좋단 말이야.

#3 : throw the book at someone (누구에게 중형을 선고하다)

실제 의미와는 살짝 동떨어진 연상이나, 그 크고 무거운 법전을 (특히 모서리 부분) 범죄자에게 냅다 던지면 맞는 입장에서는 엄청나게 아플 것입니다. 판사가 흉악한 범죄자에게 법전을 던지는 연상을 하시면 오랫동안 이 표현을 기억하실 수 있으실 것입니다.

좀 끔직한 연상이겠지만, 뜨거운 물에 던져진다면 정말 괴롭지 않겠습니까? 더군다 나 쉽사리 빠져나갈 수 없는 상황이라면 더더욱 말입니다!

ahead는 전방, 앞이라는 의미가 있다는 것은 모든 분들이 아실 듯 하니, 앞으로 나 가다, 앞에 도달하다 정도의 연상으로 보시면 "성공하다"라는 의미가 손쉽게 연상 되 실 것 같습니다.

흔히 "with 누구"까지 사용하여 fix A up with B로 사용되는 경우가 빈번합니다.

I’m willing to do anything to get ahead in life. 나는 성공을 위해서라면 뭐든지 할 수 있다.

I did promise to fix you up with my best friend, but I didn’t say when. 내가 너한테 내 절친을 소개시켜주기로 약속한 것은 사실이지만, 언제 소개시켜준다고는 안 했잖아.

#7 : feel like a fish out of water (소외감을 느끼다, 어색한 기분이다)

#8 : brown-bag (도시락을 싸오다)

물속에 사는 물고기가 물밖에 나오면 숨도 막히고 못 움직이니 갑갑하고 그런 느낌 일 것입니다. 여러분들은 금붕어이며 어항으로부터 밖으로 끄집어내진 상태입니다.

Red sun!

외국에서 도시락을 흔히 갈색 종이 봉투에 넣어서 다니는 점에서 파생된 표현입니 다.

I felt like a fish out of water when everyone else showed up in luxury cars and I was in my lame car. 나는 변변찮은 차를 몰고 갔는데, 다른 사람들은 모두 고급 차를 끌고 온 모습을 봤을 때 나 는 소외감을 느꼈다.

I brown-bag to work to save money. 나는 돈을 절약하기 위해 도시락을 싸서 출근한다.

#9 : break even (본전치기 하다)

#10: black sheep (골칫덩어리)

even은 "평등한, 평행의"라는 의미로, 이 경우에는 손해와 이익이 평행을 이루는 경 우를 이야기 하는 것입니다. 참고로, 손익분기점은 break-even point라고 부른답 니다.

잘 아시겠지만, 양의 털이 정상적으로는 흰색입니다. 간혹 가다 검은색 털을 지닌 양 이 태어나는데, 검은색은 불길한 색으로 생각되는 점과, 검은색 양털을 어디 팔아먹 을 수도 없기에 "골칫덩어리"라는 의미로 사용된답니다.

Our company barely managed to break even last year. 우리 회사는 작년에 간신히 본전치기를 했다.
