The revival of the Silk Road ‘제 2의 실크로드’

The Istanbul-Gyeongju World Culture EXPO 2013 is to take place from August 31 to September 22 in downtown Istanbul, Turkey.

As part of President Park Geunhye’s creative economy and cultural prosperity project, along with the participation of Korea’s leading corporations, the EXPO aims to become the most widely attracted event for this year by bringing together

two of the world’s most culturally rich locations; the hub* of the historic Silk Road and the heart of the Silla Dynasty.

As a result of the EXPO, Korea expects a 21.5 percent increase in national awareness, a 22,000 increase in number of tourists, and a 40 trillion won (US$35.9 million) increase in exports. The total revenue from tourism will amount to 55 trillion won.

For Turkey, the EXPO will construct infrastructure valued at 43 trillion won and bring about an economic effect equivalent to 24 trillion won ($21.55 million). Along with increase in national awareness and invigoration* of sociocultural exchange, the event is to be a milestone* for the two “brother countries.”

Events at the EXPO will include K-Pop concerts, joint orchestra

concerts, world folk arts performances, B-boying and crossover performances, traditional parades and Taekwondo demonstrations.

The venue will also offer cultural exhibitions*, film festivals, fashion shows, E-sports competitions and the Silk Road Bazaar, among many others.

President Park Geun-hye will travel to Russia for a Group of 20 (G-20) summit before visiting Vietnam for summit talks on economic cooperation with the country, her office said on August 20. The trip will take place on September 4-11.

The Russian trip will include a stop in Saint Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city. In Vietnam,, the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam are on the itinerary.

The two-country trip marks the president’s third overseas* trip since her inauguration in early February.

Park previously visited the United States and China in May and June, respectively.

On September 4-7, Park will be in Saint Petersburg joining other world leaders to attend the G-20 summit*

discussing global economic issues, such as development, job creation, and trade and investment promotion, the president’s office said through a statement.

President Park aims to address world leaders to step up efforts to help the global economy overcome uncertainties and move towards sustainable* growth. She will be presenting a speech that will highlight the importance of resolving low growth and high unemployment, the office statement said.

The president will also hold bilateral talks with some of the leaders in the summit. Questions arose whether she will hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Hyperphoto, an innovative photographic genre tried out by French photographer Jean-Francois Rauzier, is an art in which one magnificent image is created from 600 to 3,500 telephotos* that are juxtaposed and crossed together.

Rauzier has been working as a photographer and producing creative pieces for approximately 40 years.

As digital technology has developed, it has enabled Rauzier to break the traditional photographic paradigm.

Finally in 2002, he came up with an alternative, fascinating genre of photography, called “hyperphoto.”

Rauzier uses photos of civilized landscapes and cultural properties that he has taken during his travels around the world to create

hyperphotos. He uses computer programs to flip, distort, replicate and finally arrange all the photos together, reflecting his unique insight of the world. Rauzier eliminated the limit of time and space from his photo, thereby revealing the world in a more detailed manner, from various angles.

Rauzier’s hyperphotos cannot be understood, or even “seen” at once.

It requires audiences to take their time, read from diverse positions and views in order to unveil the story. Through his expression of an unrealistic yet real world, Rauzier aims to implant refreshing visions of reality in people’s mind.

Number of illicit drug suppliers rising 국내 마약 판매 증가

The illicit drug supply increased by over 33 percent in the first half of this year compared to a year ago.

Related criminal activities* also grew as an increasing number of foreigners have been using Korea as a route to circulate illegal drugs, prosecutors said on August 18.

The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office has reportedly captured 4,601 people using or circulating*drugs, including methamphetamines and marijuana.

The figure is a 4.8 percent increase from the same period last year.

The prosecution said those caught for illegal drug use accounted for 50.6 percent of arrests, while the rest were convicted for circulating, smuggling or producing illicit drugs.

A total of 1,704 individuals were convicted* of drug smuggling, producing or circulating for the first half of this year, an increase of 33.4

percent from a year ago. Drug use convictions dropped by 9 percent.

Prosecutors pointed to the foreign drug rings, mostly from China, Southeast Asia and Nigeria, which are attempting to use Korea as a route to mobilize their products.

An official from the prosecution said, "An increasing number of global drug smugglers from Nigeria and Southeast Asian countries are trying to use South Korea as a passage in order to avoid tight screening in their destination countries like Japan or the United States, the biggest drug consumers.”

The first half of the year saw 30.6 kilograms of illicit drugs confiscated, compared 24.6 kg a year ago. Around two-thirds of the drugs confiscated this year were methamphetamines.

While job sharing continues to increase nationwide as the Park Geun-hye administration reaches for a 70 percent employment rate, it turns out that long-hour working conditions are still widespread.

According to research from the Ministry of Employment and Labor in the first half of this year, 86.6 percent, or 272 of 314 companies, violated the legal standard for extended working hours (12 hours a week). The data also showed that 312 companies were against the National Labor Relations Act due to such reasons as not giving an overtime allowance*.

Meanwhile, it turns out that

working hours of 74 out of 85 companies which require long working hours, including the auto and IT industries, were over the legal limit. The ministry urged those companies to stick to government policies by following through on additional hiring, new shift systems* and equipment investment.

The Minister of Labor recognized the seriousness of long-time working conditions and said it would be urgent for companies to improve their working environment to accomplish the sought-after 70 percent employment rate.

IT 업종 등 85개소를 대상으로 조사한 결과 74개소(87.1%)에서 연장근로시간을 위반했 다. 노동법을 위반한 사업장에 대해 고용부 는 시정 조치를 내렸고, 신규 채용과 교대제 개편, 설비증설 등의 조치가 취해질 것으로 보인다. 고용노동부 장관은 제조업 중심으로 장 시간 근로가 여전히 심각한 것으로 확인되 었다며 고용률 70% 달성을 위해서는 반드 시 근로 방식의 개선이 시급하다고 전했다.

According to a report by Statistics Korea on August 14, unemployment has remained unchanged in July from June but job creation has quickened slightly.

The report showed that the unemployment rate* stood at 3.1 percent last month, unchanged from June, when adjusted for inflation.

The July figure marked the largest increase since October of last year, which registered an increase of 396,000 created jobs.

The health and social welfare* service sector

gained 164,000 jobs and the manufacturing sector added 53,000 jobs. Also, the lodging and dining sector added 63,000 jobs and the transportation industry added 36,000 positions compared to a year ago.

Despite the increase in jobs, people who searched for work but failed to do so increased by 33,000, or 4.1 percent on-year to 828,000. The previous month numbered at 813,000.

The report also showed that the employment rate decreased from 60.5 percent to 60.4 percent,

from June to July, respectively. Currently, the Park Geun-hye government is pushing to raise the employment rate to 70 percent, during the current presidential term.

For the younger generation, the job market worsened in July.

Report showed that the unemployment rate increased to 8.3 percent for those aged 15-29 from 7.9 percent in June. The rate is higher than the same period last year, recorded at 7.3 percent.

Despite its global sales growth, Samsung Electronics is struggling in the Chinese market, company sales data showed on August 18.

Samsung’s regulatory file* showed that its revenue for the first half of this year amounted to 77.2 trillion won (US$69.4 billion).

The data showed that revenue from the Americas was reported at 26.7 percent, or 20.6 trillion

won (US$ 18.35 billion), of the company’s half-year turnover*.

Asia and Africa, excluding China, made up 23.3 percent, and Europe, 21.5 percent.

Revenue from the Chinese market accounted for 16.4 percent, or 12.6 trillion won, while Korea was reported at 12.1 percent.

The Chinese market share fell from last year’s 20.4 percent, while

the numbers increased significantly or remained virtually* unchanged in other parts of the world.

Samsung’s revenue rose by 4.3 percent in the Americas, while in Asia and Africa, excluding China, it increased by 2.7 percent. Europe on the other hand fell by 0.6 percent.

Samsung Electronics reclaimed first place in the long-term evolution (LTE) phone market.

During the second quarter of this year, Samsung sold 27.2 million LTE units worldwide, taking 47 percent of the market share.

According to Strategy Analytics, a global market research firm, the company overtook* the top spot from Apple, which has a market share of 23.5 percent.

Handset sales increased by 17 million for the company and its market share rose by 22 percent from the previous quarter.

Apple took an early lead in the market with 54.1 percent during the 2012 fourth quarter and 41.3 percent in the first quarter of this year,

thanks to strong sales of the iPhone 5.

LG Electronics maintained second place for three consecutive* quarters in the LTE market, but fell to fourth place, Sony gaining third with 3.6 million sales and a 6.2 percent market share.

Industry sources credit strong sales of the Galaxy S4, other LTE handset models, leading-edge technologies and patent competitiveness* for Samsung’s strong performance.

With the popularity of the Galaxy S4 and the release of the Galaxy Note 3 only a few weeks away, Samsung is expected to lead the LTE market throughout the third quarter.

Online rumors speculate the latest iPhone will come in a wider variety of colors or larger screens, but Apple does not intend to abandon Steve Jobs’ legacy to create phones that fit in the palm of the hand.

Apple has added half an inch to its iPhones since Jobs passed away in 2011. Jobs himself stated that the 3.5-inch screen was the perfect size for consumers.

An anonymous* source said Apple will stick to palm-sized phones, whether the next model will be the iPhone 5S or the iPhone 6. “ A p p l e p r o b a b l y w o n ’t b e abandoning this policy any time soon,” the source said.

The company has reportedly been experimenting* with the idea,

rumors claiming the company made a prototype with a screen of up to 4.7 inches.

Some watchers argue that the 4.7inch screen may not be enough, as the trend for bigger and wider screens with better displays are becoming more accepted and demanded by consumers.

According to AndroidPIT, an online smartphone community, its survey shows that 38 percent of 757 consumers prefer a 5-inch display, compared to only 2 percent of respondents favoring a 3.5-inch display. Other respondents favor 5.5inch (19 percent) and 4.5-inch (27 percent) screens.

Park Chu-Young’s future uncertain 어두운 박주영의 미래

Once full of promise, 28-year-old Park ChuYoung’s future at the Emirates Stadium seems obscure as he searches for a new team in London.

The Arsenal striker who was given limited opportunities on his first team is currently training outside of the club’s facilities.

Park joined Arsenal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco on August 2011 on a deal, for which the Gunners’ executives* went as far as writing out

£5.5 million (9.5 billion won). Yet, the transfer flop has had a disappointing couple of years making only six appearances for the club despite his brilliant debut goal against Bolton.

No one actually knows for certain the reason behind Park’s lack of progress since his arrival but experts say that former Arsenal team captain Robin van Persie’s outstanding 2011-2012 season had a huge impact* on Park’s career in England.

Due to his lack of game time and concerns about his current performance, Park is unlikely to make his appearance for South Korea any time soon as national head coach Hong Myung-Bo recently made it clear that he will not be selecting players that do not get enough game time at their respective teams.

The resurrection of hip hop 힙합의 부활

In South Korea, you seldom go to a bar or a club and are spared from hearing synthesizers and other forms of electromagnetic sounds that make up electronic music. BoombapTrohh Hip-Hop and Dubstep Music Festival organizers noticed this music trend early last winter.

Instead of jumping on the bandwagon, they decided to challenge the trend by bringing something back—hIP hOP! Now, you are probably wondering about what Boombap-Trohh has up its sleeves, especially who will be performing, right? Well, they have a bunch of international artists, a few DJs and some local Korean acts in the lineup.

Not surprisingly, one of the main acts they have coming is B.o.B, the American rapper from Decatur, Georgia. He is signed by Grand Hustle, a label that rapper T.I., who is quite known in the industry, put together. This artist has been making major moves ever since he released his single, “Nothin’ On You,” a song in which Bruno Mars was featured, and which hit number one in the U.S. and the U.K. shortly after entering

the air waves.

Also, we have all heard of Tha Dogg Pound, right? Originally, this group was formed by Daz Dillinger and Kurupt in the early 90s, but they are still around. Dogg Pound (Next Generation) was formed in 2006 by Daz and Kurupt. The group, DPNG, consists of rappers Meko (aka Mr. Murder) Dangerous Rob, Montana, 45, J-Tripz and Chaotic.

most definitely come and check out this festival. Boombap-Trohh HipHop and Dubstep Music Festival will take place at Sodong Park in Incheon from October 25-27.

This is the first festival Boombap has put together. I personally have been in Korea for a very long time, and this is the first time I have heard about a local festival that is solely dedicated to hip-hop.

What makes this festival so unique in its concept is the fact that it was designed to give you a new experience by bringing back hiphop with a powerful statement while combining the genre with dubstep.

The event will not only feature great beats, but also art booths where you can see various hip-hop influenced pieces as well as graffiti, body painting, and makeup stations.

And of course, what would a hiphop gathering be without the b-boys and the freestylers who always huddle around the stage to share their talents?

Her hobbies are singing, dancing, writing, and folding herself into a pretzel in Bikram Yoga. Honestly, I think there is sometimes a bit of envy or a sort of respect for gyopos here. It's half and half. There is that respect, because gyopos have had the privilege of living overseas and most of them speak English fluently (which is such a big thing in Korea), and there are also some stereotypes that leave Koreans not really loving us—the way we dress is sometimes less conservative, we talk louder, we don't fully understand or respect the local culture. 솔직히 말하자면 교포들에 대한 약간의 부러움이나 존중 이 있는 것 같아요. 반 반 이에요. 해외에서 살다 왔기 때문 에 영어를 잘하는 점을 존중해 주지만(한국에선 영어가 워낙 중요하기 때문에) 한편으론 좋지 않은 고정관념도 존재하죠. 예를 들어 교포들이 입는 옷이 너무 과하거나, 크게 떠든 다 거나, 한국 문화를 잘 이해 못 한다는 등.

Of course. I'm really grateful that I know Korean because I feel like if I didn't I would feel less connected to the people here. I understand that if you never learned the language, it's difficult to pick it up now but it opens up a whole other world if you can connect with the people through language. I have been told a lot that I should be very thankful to my parents for having taught me Korean. 당연하죠. 한국말을 할 수 있다는 게 참 다행이라고 생각해요. 만약에 못 했다면 이 곳 사람들과 연결되어 있다는 느낌이 덜 들 었을 거에요. 만약 배워보지 못 했다면 이 제 와서 배우는 게 아주 어렵다는 사실을 잘 알지만 언어를 통하여 사람들과 소통하 면 새로운 세상을 만날 수 있어요. 많은 사 람들이 제가 부모님으로부터 한국말을 배 운 것에 대해 감사해야 한다고 해요.

When foreigners see me sometimes they are surprised that I speak English, but after they talk to me for a while they consider me more American than Korean. It’s strange—the difference between what foreigners living here consider me versus what people in the States consider me.

When it comes to fashion, I think I am very Americanized. Plus I grew up in Florida where tank tops and spaghetti straps were so natural to wear whereas you may be looked at strangely if you show too much

shoulder here.

When it comes to culture in general, I'm used to hanging out with younger or older people without really concerning myself with age but here there is a lot of focus on age and respect. I remember when I went to Yonsei, the younger kids would greet me with a bow and I just felt so awkward.

패션 같은 경우는 아메리칸 스타일에 가까워요. 제가 자란 플로리다에선 탱크 톱과 가느다란 어깨 끈으로 어깨를 과하 게 드러내는 건 눈살 찌푸리는 이곳과 달리 정말 흔했어요. 문화적인 측면에선 여기가 나이와 나이에 대한 존중을 대 게 중요히 여기죠. 하지만 저는 나이와 별 상관 없이 어울리 는 거 같아요. 연세대 다닐 때 저보다 어린 학생들이 저한테 고개 숙여 인사할 때가 어색했어요.

Gyopo, American, French, Korean, Chinese— we're all the same. Though we have our cultural differences, I think what's most important is that we all understand that at the core we're all one.

Some of my best friends have been people who are so different from me, so I feel lucky to be living here in Seoul where it's so mixed. 교포, 미국인, 프랑스인, 한국인, 중국인 다 같습니다. 문화 적인 차이는 있지만 중요한 것은 우리 모두가 근본적으로 하 나라는 것입니다. 저와 가장 친한 친구들 중 저와 많이 다른 친구들도 있었기에 서울처럼 다양성이 있는 곳에 살고 있다 는 게 행운인 것 같아요.

You can find more information on Korean websites about E-Sens, Swings and Gaeko etc. but writing about diss songs two weeks in a row is not my thing so let’s get on with it. 켄드릭 라마의 디스노래가 미국 힙합계를 뒤흔든 후 바로 한국에서도 디스곡들이 열풍을 불러일으킨 점이 참 재미난 현 상이라고 생각합니다. 한국웹사이트를 참조하면 이센스와 스 윙즈, 개코 등에 관한 자료를 찾으실 수 있으리라 믿습니다. 저도 이주연속 디스곡에 대해 쓰기엔 제 스타일에 맞지 않아 서 다른 주제의 기사를 쓰려고 합니다.

This week I would like to introduce some of our female artists that many of you are familiar with.

It is quite common from the past to the current times to pair up the ladies and gents by having the ladies sing the chorus and the dudes rap. There are numerous female artists throughout history such as Lil’ Kim, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliot, Aaliyah, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Beyonce. I am sure you have heard some of them but Aaliyah is the one who I want to talk about. 이번 주에는 아주 특별한 여성 아티스트를 소개하고 싶습니 다. 힙합은 예로부터 남자들이 랩을하고 여자들이 노래를 하 는 구조를 흔하게 볼 수 있었습니다. 릴킴, 매리 제이 블라이 지, 알리아, 니키 미나지, 리하나, 비욘세 등 수많은 아티스들 이 있지만, 저는 알리아를 소개하고 싶습니다.

Aaliyah was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, NewYork. She was a talented young lady that appeared in a talent show at age 10 and had a record deal at age 12. She later met her mentor R. Kelly, who had helped her to release her debut album “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number” in 1994. This album sold over 3 million copies in the U.S. and was a great success as it was certified double platinum. 알리아는 1979년 1월 16일에 뉴욕 블룩클린에서 태어났습 니다. 이미 10살때 텔레비전 탤런트쇼에도 출연했고, 열두살 의 어린 나이에 소속사와 계약을 하게 되었습니다. 그후 자신 의 멘토 알켈리를 만나 무려 300만장이나 판매된 “Age Ain't Nothing But a Number”이라는 데뷔작으로 크게 성공하였 습니다.

On August 25, 2001, the young star died in a plane crash returning from the Bahamas . It was later discovered that the pilot did not have a license and had alcohol and cocaine in his system. Aaliyah died at age 22 after being crowned as “Princess of R&B” and “Queen of Urban Pop.” R.I.P.

“I want to make my country safe for my people.” – Aki Ra (The Landmine Museum)

When mentioning to people that I was going to Cambodia, general reactions were often related to Angkor Wat or the ways you can turn $10 into a full English breakfast, a mani-pedi, three martinis and a silk scarf. I'll admit I did enjoy the opportunity to see just how far my money could go, however, it was the Cambodian people that had a much larger impact on me. The locals support whole families on little more than $1 per day and the remnants of a recent and tragic history made it impossible for me to simply enjoy the typical bread and circus of the tourist track.

To give you a brief history, the Communist Party of Kampuchea, better known as the Khmer Rouge, took control of the country between 1975 and 1979. When the regime fell, an estimated 2-3 million people had been killed. Cambodia continues to pick up the pieces from this brutal moment in its history. But, it wouldn't have risen so quickly from the rubble without exceptional individuals who have tried to restore Cambodia's prosperity and dignity.

내가 캄보디아에 간다고 말했을 때, 대다수의 사람들 은 앙코르와트, 단돈 만원으로 완벽한 아침식사를 즐길 수 있는 것, 매니큐어 서비스, 마티니와 실크 스카프와 같은 것들을 떠올렸다. 물론, 캄보디아에서의 여행이 내 돈이 얼마만큼이나 많은 것들을 가져다 주는지 확인해볼 수 있는 기회였던 건 사실이다. 하지만 그보다 더 인상 깊었던 것은 캄보디아의 사람들이었다. 그 곳의 현지인 들이 하루에 1달러를 웃도는 돈으로 온 가족을 부양한다 는 사실, 그리고 최근의 비극적인 역사의 잔해로 인해 필 자는 관광지의 먹을거리, 볼거리를 마음껏 즐길 수만은 없었다. 간략히 설명하자면, 캄보디아는 1975년에서 1979년 사이 크메르루주로 알려진 캄푸치아 공산당의 지배 하에 있었으며, 공산당 정권이 무너졌을 때 약 200만명에서 300만명의 사람들이 희생되었다. 캄보디아는 계속해서 이러한 잔혹한 역사를 만회하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 하 지만, 캄보디아의 번영과 위엄을 되찾기 위해 노력한 몇

One such individual, whose story truly left an impression on me, is Aki Ra the founder of the Landmine Museum and the nongovernmental organization (NGO), Cambodian Self Help Demining. Aki Ra is an exKhmer Rouge soldier who was forcibly conscripted after he had been orphaned at ten years old. Throughout his childhood he was forced to commit atrocities most would not soon forget. It wasn't until his late teens that he was given a chance at redemption when he received United Nations training to clear landmines.

After the United Nations finished their mission and left Cambodia, Aki Ra had cleared 50,000 landmines single-handedly with nothing more than a knife, a Leatherman and a stick. After realizing that the plight of landmines was much larger than one man's work, he founded the NGO “Cambodian Self Help Demining .”

So, in between your $2 foot massages and cheap booze, save some time for the Landmine Museum on your next Cambodian vacation itinerary. It’s truly inspirational and gives you an interesting insight into the Cambodian people.

Finally, to raise further awareness amongst both locals and travelers, he opened The Landmine Museum. This small fascinating museum located in a dusty village outside of Angkor Wat was one of the highlights of my trip to Cambodia. For only $1 you can get a guided tour that takes you on a journey through Aki Ra's life and learn about the tragic consequences of the use of landmines in Cambodia and beyond. You can also see much of the defused ordinance that Aki Ra cleared himself.

All proceeds to the museum go to the Landmine Museum Relief Center, a rehabilitation center also founded by Aki Ra for orphans and young landmine survivors.

명의 특별한 사람들이 없었다면 캄보디아는 그처럼 빨리 재기할 수 없었을 것이다. 그 특별한 사람들 중 특히 감명 깊었던 이는 아키 라 (Aki Ra)이다. 그는 지뢰 박물관과 비정부기구인 캄보디 아 지뢰 제거 연대(CSHD)의 설립자이다. 아키 라는 10 세 때 고아가 된 후 강제로 크메르루주에 징집되어 병사 로 활동하였고, 쉽게 잊혀지지 않을 잔혹한 공격을 자행 해야 했다. 그는 10대 후반에 국제연합(UN)에서부터 지 뢰 제거 훈련을 받았는데, 이는 그가 구원받을 수 있는 기회가 되었다.

었습니다. 바로 '축구공 꿰매는 소년'의 사진이 실렸습니다. 십대 초반의 어린이가 대기업 나이키의 축구공을 만드는데 필요한 손바느질은 1620번. 그가 하루 종일 일해서 받는 임 금은 60센트에 불과했습니다. 많은 선진국 아이들에게 '꿈' 을 선사해준 축구공은 이 파키스탄 소년에겐 악몽이었습니 다. 그리고 많은 선진국들의 소비자도 분노하게 만들었습니 다.

I

n June 1996, the American public was largely disturbed by a cover photo of “Life” magazine. The photo displayed a young boy sewing a soccer ball. To make a ball for Nike, he needed to sew 1620 times; his wage was mere 60 cents. While the ball fulfilled the dream for the boys of developed countries, the same ball was a nightmare for the Pakistani boy. As soon as the issue was distributed among the public, consumers were enraged. 사진이 유명해지고, 많은 소비자에게 나이키의 ‘일단 해봐 (Just Do It)’라는 멋진 슬로건이 '일단 (착취) 해봐'로 들리게 되었지요. 많은 사람들이 나이키에 대해 실망하게 되었고, 결과적으로 2000년대 공개/공식적으로 사과하기 전까지 소 비자의 질타로 인한 주가의 엄청난 하락을 겪었습니다.

As the photo of the “sewing boy” became famous, Nike’s famous slogan, “Just Do It” sounded like, “Just Exploit Them.” As a result, Nike’s stock prices plummeted due to consumer’s denouncement until the company apologized publicly.

기업의 사회적 책임 (Corporate Social Responsibility)에 대해선 다른 글에 더 자세히 쓸텐데요. 이렇게 나이키의 이야 기로 시작한 이유는 공정 무역에 대해서 쓰기 위해서였습니 다.

While I will elaborate more on “corporate social responsibility” in the next column, the reason why I started my column was to share an essay about “fair trade.” 공정무역은 개발 국가들이 빈곤한 저개발국가의 가난한 생산자들에게 정당한 몫을 주고 거래할 수 있는 토대를 제공 하는 세계적인 운동이지요. 과거엔 저개발 국가들에게 단순 히 해외 원조만으로 도와주거나, 이윤만을 위한 착취 대상으 로 삼았다면, 이제는 제 값을 줌으로써 경제적으로 자립할 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이 공정 무역이라고 할 수 있습니다.

Fair trade is a global movement that tries to establish an environment in which developed countries give fair shares of the goods that laborers of developing countries have produced.

In the past, the developed countries have either exploited the developing countries or assisted them through foreign aid. But the activists that support fair trade suggest that the prerequisite for the fair international norm is to let the developing countries sustain themselves by giving fair shares of the workers’ labor. 하지만 한가지 명심해야 할 점이 있습니다. 공정무역운동 만으로는 스스로를 지속가능하게 할 수 없습니다.. 공정 무 역을 완성시키는 것은 바로 윤리적 소비입니다. 아무리 멋진 사회적 미션을 단체들이 우후죽순으로 쏟아낸다고 하더라도 소비자들의 의식적인 행동으로 이 단체들의 사회적 미션을 지탱해주지 않으면 공정 거래는 살아남을 수 없습니다.

But there is one thing we should remember. Fair trade alone cannot sustain itself, and is completed by “ethical consumption.” Without conscious actions of consumers, fair trade cannot survive, even with the massive appearance of a fair trade movement. 한국에도 여러 공정 무역 단체들이 있습니다. 아직은 커피 와 초콜릿 등의 먹거리 제품이 많지만, 더 많은 공정 무역 제 품들이 생겨났으면 좋겠습니다. 그렇게 되려면 소비자인 우 리 모두가 윤리적 소비에 더욱 관심을 가지고 실천해야 합니 다.

Even in Korea, many fair trade organizations are appearing. Although the scopes of fair trade goods are limited to foods like coffee and chocolate, I hope many other fair trade goods appear in the future. To achieve that goal, I believe that we, the consumers, should be more concerned about ethical consumption and practice it.

영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby의 유용한 회화/이디엄 표현으로 영어실력 향상하기 안녕하세요. 강남역 셀리어학원에 영어발음/스피킹 전문강사인 Moby입니다. 이번시간부터 매회마다 5개에서 10개 정도의 유용한 회화/이디엄 표현으로 여러분들에 영어실력을 향상시켜 드리겠습니다.

#1 : can’t stand ~ (무엇을 견딜 수 없다) I just can’t stand my wife’s nagging. 나는 내 아내의 잔소리를 견딜 수가 없어 #2 : carry a tune (노래를 잘 하다) 흔히 부정문으로 사용되어 노래를 못한다는 의미로 사용되는 표현이에요.

I’m afraid I can’t carry a tune. 미안한데, 나는 음치야. #3 : carry one’s weight (자신의 몫을 하다) pull one’s own weight라고도 표현해요. 집안, 학교, 회사등에서 각자 해야 할 일이 꼭 있죠?

Dick, you’re fired. You just haven't been carrying your weight. 딕, 당신은 해고에요. 당신의 몫을 못 해냈잖아요. #4 : suck up to ~ (누구에게 아부하다) 당연히 많이 부정적인 뉘앙스를 담고 있기에, 직접 사용할 때는꼭 상대방 마음 상하지 않게 주의하세요!

Ah, he's sucking up to the professor again! 저런 그 녀석이 또 교수님한테 아부 떨고 있네! #5 : buy that (믿다) 여러분 들도 어떤 물건을 믿을 수 없으면 구매를 안 하겠죠? will, can등의 조동사와 사용되어 믿다, 믿을 거다, 믿을수 있다 등의 의미로 사용된답니다.

He said he’ll pay me back in a week. I can buy that. 그는 일주일 후에 돈을 갚기로 했고, 나는 그의 말을 믿을 수 있어. #6 : a close shave (아슬아슬한 상황) close call이라고도 표현해요 The car passed only a few inches from me-it was a real close shave. 차가 나를 스치듯이 지나갔어. 정말 아슬아슬했어. #7 : buy a round (한잔 돌리다) 더치페이가 일상인 곳에서는 기분 좋은 일이 있을 때, 술을 한 잔, 혹은 한 병씩 돌리는 경우가 있는데요, 이 때 사용하면 좋은 표현이에요.

When my son was born, I bought a round for everyone in the bar. 우리 아들이 태어났을 때 나는 술집에 있던 모든 사람들에게 한잔씩 돌렸어. #9 : by any means (수단과 방법을 가리지 않고) 끝에 necessary를 붙여서 by any means necessary로도 표현해요.

I need to pass the civil service examination by any means. 나는 어떻게든 공무원 시험을 통과해야 해요. #10 : call it quits (그만 두다) That’s it! I’ve had enough. I’m calling it quits! 됐어. 더 이상은 못 참겠다. 나 그만둘래. 다음 시간에 더욱 풍부한 표현들로 다시 찾아 뵙도록 하겠습니다~!
