Hundreds gathered near the Hongik University area on the evening of August 15 to celebrate Independence Day through the “8.15 Attack,” organized by the Korea Festival Association.

Armed with Korean flags and instruments and disguised in bridal masks, these patriots paraded around town, getting spectators to join them on their historic march.

The bridal masks that were

prepared for the event sold out within the first hour. As planned, all proceeds of the event are to be donated to the survivors of Japanese military sexual slavery during the Asia-Pacific War.

Meanwhile, Batucada style performance group “Rapercussion” marched alongside the masked men, cheering “Korea!” and “Happy Independence Day!”

According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, a ”brain bank,” or a brain and spinal cord* tissue repository, will open in Daegu in 2014 to assist in research of neurological disorders* such as autism and Alzheimer’s disease.

The state-funded project will be organized and operated by the Korea Brain Research Institute. The main goal of the repository will be to study neurodegenerative diseases and develop treatments in a more effective manner.

Brains and spinal tissue collected by brain banks are from patients who have died while suffering

from the kinds of disorders that researchers intend to study in the pursuit of obtaining a better understanding, and ultimately cures and treatments, for such health issues.

By opening this repository, Korea will be better equipped to work towards joining brain research leaders like Brazil, Japan and the U.S. that all have federally funded brain banks and have made substantial contributions to the research of brain disorders and treatments such as Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

In Cheongju, the Pink Taxi service is one way to ease women’s fears of getting into a taxi driven by someone she can only hope will simply take her to the requested destination*.

With the Pink Taxi service, by scanning a QR code located within each cab, the passenger can send taxi drivers’ background information and current location to a third party, like the passenger’s parents. In addition to this function, with the Taxi Protection application, customers can connect with the taxi service’s call center, request pick-up or check arrival times.

Additionally, Pink Taxi drivers

cannot have any traffic accidents on their record from the last three years and they also must undergo thorough background checks.

Though the service may be mostly seen as beneficial to women who are at a higher risk of becoming victims of violence, demanding better safety records and in-depth criminal background checks can make any customer feel safer, as it is not uncommon to encounter reckless or fare-hiking cab drivers .

Though the Pink Taxi services are slightly higher in price than other cab services, the increased safety precautions and transparency make them a valuable method of secure transportation.

또한 핑크 택시 운전자들은 최근 3년간 교통 사고 기록이 없어야 하며 철저한 환경 조사를 필수적으로 받아야 한다. 핑크 택시 서비스는 폭력의 희생자가 될 가 능성이 높은 여성들을 보호하고, 택시 운전자 에 대한 심도 있는 조사 및 정보 제공을 통해 승객에게 신뢰감을 줄 수 있다. 그러나 서비스 를 이용하는 과정에서 바가지 요금을 뒤집어 씌우는 택시 기사들도 종종 발견할 수 있다. 핑크 택시 서비스가 다른 택시 서비스에 비 해 가격이 다소 높은 편이지만, 강화된 안전과 명료한 정보 제공을 고려하면 충분히 가치 있 는 안전한 교통수단이다.

“Different pricing on goods with similar functions has to do with market competition. The domestic market for camping equipment is divided in two, imported goods and domestic goods.

“Domestic goods consist of those from conglomerates* (e.g. Kolon, Kovea), mid-sized firms (e.g. Black Yak, Nepa), and many small businesses. Competitiveness varies according to brand and equipment. Because each brand’s competitive composition reflects its production cost, consumers have a hard time deciding on equipment with similar quality.”

Activist and victim of Japanese sexual enslavement Lee Yong-nyeo dies at 87 일본군 성 노예 피해자 및 운동가, 고 이용녀 할머니 87세에 별세

An activist* dedicated to achieving justice for the victims of sexual enslavement by the Japanese Imperial Army, herself included, Lee Yong-nyeo passed away on August 11 leaving a legacy of continued struggle.

Her funeral took place on August 13, during which her corpse was cremated* and stored as per her request at the House of Sharing, a home and place of healing for survivors like Lee. After her death, only 57 survivors remain in Korea from the atrocities carried out by the Japanese military’s sexual enslavement of Asian women during the Asia-Pacific War, a crime for which Japan still refuses to assume responsibility in spite of undeniable evidence.

Meanwhile, on a talk show, Lee’s granddaughter, Seo Miyoung, announced her intentions to file a lawsuit against netizens 위안부 피해자 고 이용녀 할머니가 지난 11 일 별세했다. 이틀 후인 13일에 장례식이 치 러져, 고인의 소원대로 유골이 나눔의 집으로 안치되었다. 이용녀 할머니의 죽음 후 생존해 있는 위안부 피해자는 현재 57명뿐이다. 한편 이용녀 할머니의 손녀인 서미영씨는 지

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi, a senior foreign policy advisor to Chinese President Xi Jinping, acclaimed his country’s diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in Korea and reaffirmed China’s pledge to press North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program.

Yang also praised the June summit between President Park Geun-hye and Xi as having “consolidated* our good-neighborly friendship and cooperation.”

The senior official talked of his article titled “Innovations in China’s Diplomatic Theory and Practice Under New Conditions,” an eight-page paper on China’s major diplomatic agenda and global affairs.

Yang said of the article, “On the Korean nuclear issue, while firmly committed to the goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, we have actively reached out to relevant countries to move the situation on the peninsula towards

relaxation.”

Tensions with the North soared earlier this year, following Pyongyang’s third nuclear test and threats against the South and the United States.

Meanwhile, Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to reopen the Kaesong industrial complex* last week, which was shut down in April due to high tensions.

On August 16, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi praised Seoul on the agreement with the North to resume the Kaesong operation and

expressed support for improved crossborder relations through dialogue* and contact.

Wang said through a telephone call with Foreign Minister Yun Byungse, that he was “relieved” in hearing about the agreement, according to his ministry.

The Chinese ministry added that Yun appreciated Chinese support, and said Korea will continue its efforts for better North-South relations.

Fewer interns hired as regular employees: finance ministry ‘정규직 전환’ 인턴 대폭 감소 Article by Hwang Yoon Translation by Choi Su-min

Data from the Ministry of Strategy and Finance showed that only one out of six interns at corporate companies and institutions were hired as employees during the first half of this year.

The data, shown on August 16, recorded 16.6 percent, or 14,000 interns, were hired by said companies from January through June.

The rate is a significant decline from the registered 22.3 percent for all of 2012 and is well below the government’s goal of 20 percent.

The finance ministry is still optimistic* on the employment rate for interns during the second half of

this year.

“More interns will be hired by public companies and institutions within the second half of this year as their internships are expected to end during that period,” a finance ministry official said.

The ministry data showed that 295 public institutions hired 12,556 interns in the first half, almost 98 percent of the government’s goal of 12,800.

Typically, interns receive monthly salaries of around 1.2 million won (US$1,077) and work 30-40 hours per week. Their employment reflects Korea’s employment rate.

Officials from the National Tax Service (NTS) and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance said on August 16 that they have started working on tougher tax inspection measures for high-income workers and selfemployed professionals.

The workers targeted are accountants, architects, lawyers, patent attorneys and plastic surgeons.

Self-employed people such as landlords, wedding hall owners, hagwon (cram school) operators and bar owners will also be targeted.

The move follows a government announcement made last week planning to collect additional taxes from middle-income workers through a tax code overhaul.

The ministry said it will reduce the number of people subject to additional taxes, following backlash* from the public, which will result in a loss of about 440 billion won per year from the original plan.

Finance minister Hyun Oh-seok said, “Instead, we will find ways to increase taxes for high-income professionals and rich self-employed people to make up for a fall in tax revenue.

“We’ll intensify inspections on those people to prevent tax evasion.”

The minister’s remark follows

suspicions of professionals underreporting their incomes to tax authorities to pay less taxes. Because they receive payments in cash, authorities have difficulty in finding their real incomes.

The tax service was criticized for collecting taxes from mostly salaried workers, whose incomes are clearly recorded.

The NTS will tighten inspections on said professionals evading taxes through cash businesses or falsifying* accounts. Stricter standards will be applied in the inspection.

The tax service cracked down on tax evasion* amounting to a total of 1.3 trillion won by high-income professionals and self-employed people since 2008.

Tax evasion totaled up to 370 billion won last year, or almost 84 percent of the 440 billion won shortfall.

A more thorough crackdown on tax evasion will commence when information from the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) is made accessible to the NTS. The FIU monitors money laundering cases and illegal outflows of foreign currency.

National soccer team manager Hong Myung-bo, 44, flew to Germany on August 16 in hopes of finding a formidable* striker who can fill the void for the team’s shortage of goals for the 2014 World Cup Brazil.

Hong intends on bringing several players from European leagues to play in a friendly against Croatia on September 10. The roster for the match will be announced during the final week of this month, the Korea

Football Association (KFA) said.

Hong’s 10-day trip will compose of appointments with Son Heungmin of Bayer Leverkusen, Koo Ja-Cheol of VfL Wolfsburg and Mainz’s Park Joo-ho, checking on their conditions.

He will also travel to England in September to meet with Cardiff City’s Kim Bo-Kung, Swansea City’s Ki Sung-Yueng, Arsenal’s Park Chu-Young and Sunderland’s Ji Dong-won.

The national team manager demonstrated improvements in midfield and defense lines but was unable to dominate* in scoring goals.

Leverkusen’s Son is attracting attention from fans after his goal against Freiburg on August 10 (KST) during his team’s Bundesliga season opener. He scored 12 goals in Hamburg last season.

Koo will also have an opportunity to play in the friendly match against

Croatia, possibly in partnership with Son. He was the national team’s captain at the London Olympics in 2012.

Midfield roster competition for the upcoming World Cup will be tougher for Ki and Kim Bo-Kyung from the English premiership because of previous performances

by Yun Il-lok and Cho Chan-ho from the K League.

“Gymnastics Fairy” Son Yeon-jae, 19, has broken her personal best record in the last allseason world cup.

Son achieved 17.833 points at the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) rhythmic gymnastics world cup event and the ribbon event with 17.700 points on August 17, local time.

Son totaled 71.083 points the previous day, acquiring 35.550 points from the hoop and ball events, her midterm ranking third.

It was her best since her previous season at the Sofia World Cup in May by 0.483 points.

However, it is still short by 0.049 points to Yana Kudryavtseva, who totals 71.132 points, unable to

Ways to minimize wounds from people 사람에게 덜 상처받는 몇 가지 방법들

hen I was preparing for college in 2007 while living inDaechi, many institutes were focusing on the new entrance examination policy system. At that time, for students from regular high schools, English debate was just an exclusive property of students from foreign language high schools.

But, as time went by, many English debate institutes started to appear within districts such as Gangnam school district 8, where ardor for studying is so high. In 2012, when I was discharged from the Army, English debate was no more than an exclusive property for specific schools, but became an important standard for many students to enter college. Let’s look at the reasons for students and parents pursuing English debate and participating in said competitions. 대치동에 살면서 대학입시를 준비하고 있던 필자가 2007년, 많은 학원들은 갑자기 등급제가 생겨버

린 입시정책에 초점을 맞추고 있었다. 그 시절, 영어토론 은 일반고등학교를 다니던 학생들에겐 그저 외고학생들 의 전유물로 여겨져 있었다. 하지만, 시간이 지나면서 강 남8학군을 포함한 여러 학구열 높은 학군들에 많은 영어 토론학원들이 생겨나기 시작했다. 필자가 군대를 전역했 던 2012년, 그리고 지금 현재 2013년, 영어토론은 더 이 상 외고학생들의 전유물이 아닌 많은 학생들의 입시필수 스펙 중 하나가 되었다. 학생들, 그리고 부모님들이 영어 토론을 선호하고 대회에 참가하는 이유를 한 번 알아보 도록 하자.

veryone gets hurt. The word “wounds” here means not the physical harm that we receive, but rather a broken heart, which can take much longer to heal. We get hurt not only in situations when we are in love, but also we consecutively get hurt during our lives while meeting numerous people. In this backdrop, I would like to suggest some ways to minimize the wounds from developing relationships with people. 받지 않는 사람은 없다. 여기서 말하는 상처 상처를 는 우리 몸에 가해지는 물리적인 상처가 아니라,

그보다 더 오래가고 잘 아물지 않는 마음의 상처를 뜻한 다. 우리는 누구를 사랑할 때만 상처를 받는 것이 아니 다. 세상을 살아가면서 수많은 사람들을 만나고 그 안에 서 우리는 끊임없이 상처를 받는다. 그래서 이번 주에는 인간관계를 형성하며 상처를 덜 받는 가장 현명한 몇 가 지 방법을 제시하고자 한다.

First, do not expect much from the counterpart.

When we get along with someone, we naturally start to expect something from that person. Thus, expectations that a person will act in accordance with your standards is risky. Because when we

assume that someone has shown actions that match with our prior expectations, we have higher expectations and start to want more. If we apply the fundamental principle that people are all different, it can’t hurt us. When a person acts differently from what we expect, we start to think about whether that person has changed or not.

Meeting people with low expectations can open your eyes to a wider range of their merits. 첫째, 상대방에게 많은 기대를 하지 마라. 우리가 누군가 를 알기 시작하고 그 사람과 얘기를 하다 보면 자연스레 그 사람에 대한 기대를 하게 된다. 여기서 기대라 함은 그 사람 이 내가 생각한 대로 행동할 가능성을 의미하기도 하는데 이 는 굉장히 위험한 발상이다. 왜냐하면 몇 번의 기대치에 맞 는 행동을 했다는 가정을 했을 때 사람은 더 큰 기대치를 적 용시키려 하기 때문이다. 이는 사람들은 모두 다르다는 원리 원칙에 따르다 보면 큰 상처로 되돌아올 수 있다. 몇 번씩 자 신이 생각하는 대로 행동하지 않는 사람을 보면 자연스레 우 리는 상대방이 변했나 라는 생각을 할 가능성이 많기 때문이 다. 기대치를 낮추고 사람을 만나라, 그럼 더 많은 장점들이 넓게 보일 테니 말이다.

Second, give how much you receive. People tend to give out more as they become closer to someone. It is somewhat related with the first argument mentioned above as well, as people normally think they can receive as much as they give out to someone. It would be a wonderful thing if one provided half and so they receive half, and if one gives everything, one can receive everything. But reality is not that simple. There are people who provide us with half even when we have given them only a small portion, while there are people who provide us with a small portion even when we have given them half.

The best way to avoid such wounds is to match the giving amount to the receiving amount.

Unconditional hospitality is not always an answer.

Why? There are many more people who do not acknowledge such an importance in the world. 둘째, 상대방에게 받는 만큼 줘라. 어떤 사람과 가까워지 면서 사람들은 더 많은 것을 주려고 하는 경향이 있다. 이는 첫 번째 단락과도 어느 정도 연관성이 있는데, 주는 대로 받 을 수 있을 거란 생각이 자리잡고 있기 때문이다. 모든 사람 이 50을 주면 50으로 돌려받고, 100을 주면 100으로 돌려받 는다면 얼마나 좋을까? 현실은 그리 만만하지 않다. 우리가 10을 줘도 50으로 돌려주는 사람들이 있는 반면, 우리가 50 을 줘도 10으로도 되돌려 받지 못하는 사람들도 있다. 애초 에 상처받지 않으려면 그 사람이 자신에게 해주는 그 정도에 맞춰주는 게 가장 현명한 방법이다. 무조건 퍼주는 게 항상 해결책은 아니다. 세상에는 그 소중함을 인식하지 못하는 사 람이 생각보다 많기 때문이다.

Third, if needed, cut out relationships resolutely.

It might seem a bit cold-hearted; however, you need to erase the idea that all people can somehow be helpful to you. It is true that nobody can predict the future and cannot accurately guess how people will change. But it will be a better choice for you to cut out someone, when he/she tires you out. If you and that person are meant to be together, you do not have to maintain inconvenient relationships. If certain relationship seem to be contrived or unnatural, it is better for you to do away with it as soon as possible. Our lives are too busy and complicated to maintain all relationships. If someone is meant to be with you, regardless of your actions, you will meet that person. 셋째, 끊을 때는 과감하게 끊어라. 굉장히 냉정한 얘기일 지도 모르지만 모든 사람들이 자신의 인생에 도움을 줄 거 란 생각은 버리는 게 낫다. 비록, 미래는 아무도 예측하지 못 하고 어떤 사람이 어떻게 변할지 모르는 것도 사실이다. 하 지만, 현재 당신의 삶을 피곤하게 하거나 힘들게 한다면 끊 어내는 것이 현명한 선택이다. 당신과 그 사람이 인연이라면 지금 불편하게 부딪히지 않아도 시간이 지나고 또 다른 곳에 서 웃으며 마주칠 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. 인연의 끈을 잡 고 있는 게 뭔가 억지스럽거나 부자연스럽다고 여겨지면 깔 끔하게 정리하는 게 해결책이다. 모든 사람들을 다 끌고 가 기엔 우리 삶은 너무나 바쁘고 복잡하다. 만날 사람은 어떻 게든 다시 만나게 되는 것이 삶이다.

Nobody likes to be wounded. Also, nobody has never been wounded. An absolute way to avoid a broken heart while meeting people does not exist in the first place. However, we need to put forth a great deal of effort. Sometimes, we need to be cold-hearted and sometimes we need to acknowledge ourselves. In that, we can minimize the damage in our minds. Do not expect much, give as much as you receive and cut out inconvenient relationships. Of course, these three things are not that easy for people. But if one adapts well to these social methods, I can guarantee that one will encounter greater social peace. 상처받는 걸 좋아하는 사람은 없다. 근데 상처를 받아보지 않은 사람은 더더욱 없다. 살아가면서 그리고 사람들을 만나 면서 상처를 받지 않는 완벽한 방법은 없다. 하지만, 우리는 노력해야 한다. 가끔은 냉정해져야 하고 가끔은 자기자신을 인정해야 한다. 그래야 상처를 덜 받고 덜 품고 살아갈 수 있 는 것이다. 많은 기대를 하지 말고, 받는 만큼 주고, 과감하 게 끊어라. 이 3가지가 물론 쉬운 건 아니다. 누구든 그럴 것 이다. 하지만, 이를 행하면 상처를 덜 받게 될 것이다. yh961407@hotmail.com

Korea has no shortage of coffee shops as anyone who’s been here more than five minutes can attest to. The problem is they all look and sound the same. About 90 percent of your coffee drinking establishments are following the same design and they’re almost all either pumping out jarring K-pop tunes or are so full of loudly chatting students using the place as a study hall that you end up with a combination of “boring” and “annoying.”

And we have the “theme café!” You can find cat and dog cafés throughout the city as well as a number of other specialty shops where the coffee comes second to the experience of being there.

As a visual artist, I’m always looking for art, so I search for the elusive “gallery cafés.” Some are more café than gallery and others are the opposite, but for artists these places offer an affordable alternative when it comes to exhibition space.

They’re much more open to letting you show your art either for free or for a very low fee (usually to cover opening party expenses). With unique atmospheres and a steady flow of viewers, having your work on a café wall could end up being one of your best shows.

For art lovers, these places usually have a more chilled, calming atmosphere since the owners tend to have a clue about that sort of thing and you’ll be able to see new “decorations” each time you visit as the walls change regularly.

Here’s a quick rundown of just a few of the lesser known gallery cafés you might want to check out around Seoul.

1. Café Hamsong The gallery This gallery café is in the Sindang Creative Arcade which is close to Sindang Station (lines 2 and 6). 2. Gallery Café Golmok Hiding down an alley near Rotiboy in Itaewon this gallery café has a full menu of pastas, sandwiches and pizzas to satisfy anyone. There’s also a full bar so don’t feel like you have to leave when the sun goes down. 4. 8Street Gallery If you’re up in the Hoegi area (Dongdaemun) near Kyung Hee University, you have to pop into the 8Street Gallery. It’s a great place with lots of wall space. They have live music quite regularly and a party-like atmosphere on weekends. 2. 갤러리 카페 골목 이 갤러리 카페는 이태원의 로티보이 근처 골목에 숨겨져 있으며, 누구나 만족할만한 파스타, 샌드위치, 피자와 같은 음식 메뉴를 자랑한다. 제대로 된 바도 있기 때문에 늦은 시 간까지 머무르기 괜찮다. 최근에 수리 공사를 거쳐 갤러리 공 간이 넓고, 국내 및 해외 예술가들의 가장 인기 있는 작품들 을 전시한다.

3. 갤러리 두루 훌륭한 에스프레소를 제공하는 이 갤러리 카페는 이태원 헬리오스 바로 근처 위쪽에 위치해있다. 2층 갤러리에서 저 명한 예술가와 신진 예술가의 전시회를 주최한다. 갤러리 두 루는 밝은 분위기 속에서 맛있는 간식을 즐기며 오후를 보내 기 좋은 장소이다.

4. 8Street 갤러리 경희대 근처 동대문 회기동에 가게 되면, 꼭 8Street 갤러 리에 들려야 한다. 벽면 전시 공간이 넓은 훌륭한 장소이다. 정기적으로 라이브 음악을 제공하며, 주말에는 파티 분위기 를 즐길 수 있다. 카페를 나서기 전, 졸고 있는 갤러리의 애완 견 ‘라떼’의 머리 한 번 쓰다듬어 주는 것도 잊지 말 것.

미국에선 주로 뉴욕시에서 놀았어요. 지하철을 밤새 운영 하거든요. 제일 큰 차이점은 시간 제약인 것 같아요. 서울에 처음 와보니까 사람들이 12시까지 놀다가 막차 타러 떠나든 지 아니면 5시반에 첫 차 탈 때까지 놀든지 둘 중 하나였어 요. 제가 느끼기엔 ‘달리자’ 또는 ‘집에 가자’의 정신이 있었 던 거 같아요.

I came to Korea right after I graduated from university, so my opinion is skewed . I prefer partying in Korea, but I think that has more to do with not being a student and having disposable income.

Phillies in Haebangchon and Zen 3 in Hongdae are probably my favorite bars. Phillies because it's local and Zen 3 because it's really cheap.

해방촌에 있는 필리즈랑 홍대에 있는 젠 3가 제가 가장 좋 아하는 술집이에요. 필리즈는 가까워서 좋고 젠3는 아주 저 렴해서 좋아요.

hat are your favorite clubs? 제일 좋아하는 클럽은요?

When I first got to Korea, Cocoon had just opened and it was crazy to me that Korean clubs were so much like the ones in the U.S., though I haven't been to Cocoon in a few years. I haven't been to a club in a while but the last time I did, I think it was NB in Gangnam. It was okay. My favorite club that I've been to here was Answer in Apgujeong. It was really big and the bar staff was really on point .

제가 대학 졸업 후 한국에 왔기 때문에 제 의견이 공평하지 않다고 봐요. 한국에서 파티 하는 게 더 좋지만 아마 그건 제 가 더 이상 학생이 아니라는 점, 그리고 금전적 여유가 있어 제가 한국에 처음 왔을 무렵 코쿤이 막 개업했고 저는 한 국 클럽들이 미국에 있는 클럽들과 아주 비슷해서 깜짝 놀랐 어요. 하지만 코쿤을 마지막으로 간지는 벌써 몇 년이나 됐어 요. 클럽을 안 간지 좀 됐지만 마지막으로 갔던 곳은 괜찮았 어요. 아마 강남에 있는 엔비 이었을 거에요. 제가 여기서 다 닌 클럽 중 제일 좋아하는 곳은 압구정에 있는 엔써 이에요. 아주 클 뿐만 아니라 서빙해주는 스텝들도 최고였어요.

ow are bar and club establishments in Korea different from those in big U.S. cities?

한국의 술집과 클럽이랑 미국 대도시의 술집과 클럽이랑 어 떻게 다르나요?

The drink quality is about the same. When I lived outside of the city in Korea (Gongju), I mainly drank at Korean-style bars where drinks were communal and there was always food on the table. But now, I mainly go to foreignerowned Western-style bars which are more or less identical to bars back home.

ow is partying in Korea different from where you have partied in the States?

In the U.S., I mainly went out in the New York City area where the subways run all night. The main difference between Korea and New York would be the time constraints. When I first came to Seoul, people would either be out until around midnight and then rush to get the last train home

hich one is cheaper? How much can you expect to spend on a night out in Seoul vs. a big U.S. city?

어디가 더 저렴한가요? 서울과 미국 대도시에서 쓰는 돈은 어느 정도 차이가 나나요?

Seoul is way cheaper. On a “normal” night out here I'll probably spend about $40 (44,000 won) and back home it would probably be about the same. The difference being that in Seoul $40 gets you 10-15 drinks and back home it might get you 4. That's why at home most people pregame at their house before going out.

서울이 훨씬 싸죠. 보통 밤에 나가면 44,000원 정도 쓰는 데 여기선 그 돈으로 10-15잔 정도 마실 수 있지만 거기선 4 잔 정도 밖에 못 마셔요. 그래서 보통 미국에선 사람들이 주 로 집에서 일차로 술을 마신 후 밖에 나가죠.

hich one has more laws related to alcohol, drinking in public, closing times, etc?

어느 나라가 술에 대한 법이 더 많은가요? 예를 들어 공공장 소에서의 술 규제, 또는 술집 문 닫는 시간 등?

In New York bars close at 4 a.m. and in New Jersey they close at 2 a.m. Drinking in public or passing out wasted on the street will usually get you a ticket or a night in the drunk tank . As far as I can tell, Korea has no laws pertaining to alcohol.

뉴욕시에서는 술집이 새벽 4시에 닫고 뉴저지는 새벽 2시 에 닫아요. 공공장소에서 술 마시거나 길 거리에서 술 취한 상태로 돌아다니다 걸리면 벌금을 내야 되요. 제가 알기로 한 국에서는 이런 규제가 없는 거 같아요.

Bonafide is officially in the building! Last week, I talked about how Uncle Pharrell is on fire these days, but there is other HUGE news in the hip-hop scene. The rookie Kendrick Lamar has dropped a verse that claims he is the “King of New York” and only Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem and Andre 3000 are on his level while everyone else is whack. He also listed several rappers in the verse in a condescending way. This rallied so much attention in the hip-hop industry since people stopped “dissing” (disrespecting) each other years ago. Clearly stating names to diss is definitely something fresh. 안녕하십니까? 보나파이드 입니다. 저번 주에는 요즘 대세 인 퍼렐에 대해 소개하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 이번 주에는 힙 합계에 최근 생겨난 빅이슈 하나에 대해 말씀 드리겠습니다. 켄드릭 라마가 스스로를 ‘뉴욕의 왕’이라 칭하고 나스, 제이 지, 에미넴, 안드레 3000 빼고는 자기랑 견줄만한 랩퍼가 없 다고 했습니다. 그후에도 많은 랩퍼들의 이름을 얘기하면서 자신이 좋아하지만 자기보다 못하다는 랩의 내용도 포함되어 있었습니다. 이 노래는 이번에 힙합세계에 큰 돌풍을 일으켰 습니다. 랩퍼들이 서로를 대놓고 디스한지가 벌써 수십 년이 나 지났기 때문입니다.

In a verse of Big Sean’s new song called “Control”, Kendrick actually bashes Big Sean in his own song. Big Sean didn’t take it harsh though, and seemed kosher and chilled about it at the interview. However, numerous rappers were furious.

B.o.B and Lupe Fiasco quickly responded to these boastful lyrics, and made songs attempting to put Kendrick back in his line. I did agree with Lupe and B.o.B about how absurd his statement was, however there is a positive side of this event.

Considering how hip-hop was built on a foundation of telling the truth or battling among MC’s, rappers have been very passive and just tried to impress the audience with their songs.

If we look into the “Golden Age” of hip-hop, aggression and competition were always hot issues and catalysts that made people more interested.

So, there are many audiences thinking that Kendrick actually made a positive effect on hip-

hop. Whether you think he is right or wrong or had different intentions, I’ll leave that for you to decide. Enjoy. 빅숀의 노래 ‘Control’에 켄드릭이 피쳐링을 했었는데, 조 금 의아한 부분은 빅숀의 노래인데 켄드릭이 비하한 랩퍼중 에 빅숀도 포함되어있다는 부분입니다. 인터뷰에서 빅숀이 켄 드릭의 비하발언을 쿨하게 받아들였다고 하니 별 문제 없었지 만, 그 직후 비오비와 루페 피아스코는 켄드릭을 향한 답문 디 스곡을 만들었습니다. 켄드릭이 요즘 뜨고 있지만 루페랑 비 오비도 랩의 대가인지라 무시 못하지요. 저도 처음엔 비오비 와 루페와 동의했습니다. 어디서 어린 랩퍼가 말도 안 되는 망 언을 내뱉는다는 생각에 말이죠. 하지만, 켄드릭의 노래가 가 져온 파장이 좋은영향도 있었습니다. 힙합은 원래부터 랩배틀 과 사실을 말하는 것에 기반하는데, 지난 십여년은 랩퍼들이 자신의 노래를 파느라 바빠서 소극적이었던 것 같습니다. 생 각해보면 디스곡은 ‘힙합의 황금기’에 호전적이면서도 경쟁 이 늘 있다 보니 이슈도 많고, 사람들의 흥미를 끄는 촉진제가 되기도 했습니다. 그래서 켄드릭의 이번 곡에 대해 호평하는 사람들도 많습니다. 큰 이슈가 된 켄드릭이 힙합의 발전에 좋 은 영향을 끼쳤다거나 망언이라거나 생각하기 나름이긴한데, 여러분의 생각은 어떠십니까? 그럼 좋은 한주 보내십시오.

The most rewarding part of living away from my homeland is traveling and it was through my adventures that Southeast Asia became like a second home. Recently, I made a visit to San Jose in the Nueva Ecija province of the Philippines.

San Jose is a five-hour bus ride from Manila in the northern-most province of the Philippines, nestled amongst the country’s 7,000 islands. It's known for it's agriculture and vegetation, though that was not the reason for my visit.

appreciative of the help they receive and the mother later gave me a gift of over one dozen fresh avocados. Some were eaten and some were used as refreshing face masks!

The trip was one of my most memorable experiences yet.

My agenda for this trip included visiting an elementary student I've been sponsoring for two years. In the spring of 2011, I was introduced to “Educate a Child,” a labor of love and cooperation that was founded by Nancy Kim in 2009 to help send children from low-income families to a school supported by contributions from mostly Seoul-based sponsors. The children attend San Jose Christian School, which is run by Ms. Kim’s father.

Upon arrival to the San Jose bus station, I was greeted by Ms. Kim and G Boy and traveled by a motorized tricycle to the school. Seeing the student I had been sponsoring face to face was touching. I started sponsoring Jamelle in kindergarten and she is just starting second grade.

land form art project. In the afternoon I visited the market with Ms. Kim and Mr. T to purchase good quality rice for the EAC families made possible by donations from an expatriate in Seoul. The children had some free time to play outside and I took that opportunity to teach a famous outdoor activity. Jump rope! You can never go wrong with a long piece of rope from the hardware store.

Day two was my last full day visiting San Jose. I never thought I would ever get the chance to meet Jamelle and her family but this was the day. I had a chance to take Jamelle, her sister and cousin to lunch at a popular local fast-food restaurant named Jollibee. We chowed down on fried chicken and spaghetti followed by ice cream sundaes for dessert; this was a real treat for all of us! Before lunch I was able to shop for household goods and food for Jamelle's family before the visit.

I only had a short time to visit and so many things to do. More than anything I wanted to interact with the students and see their learning in action. I visited several classrooms and observed Jamelle as her class worked on a three-dimensional

모국에서 떠나 살면서 제일 보람있는 것은 여행다니는 거다. 지난 모험들로 인해 동남아시아는 내게 제2의 집 이 됐다. 최근엔 필리핀 누에바시하주의 산 호세에 가 보았다. 산 호세는 필리핀의 7000여개 섬 사이에 아늑하게 자 리잡고있으며, 필리핀 북단 마닐라에서 버스로 5시간 정 도 떨어진 곳에 위치한다. 이 곳은 농업과 초목으로 알려 져있지만 그 이유 때문에 내가 찾아온 것은 아니다. 내가 이곳을 찾아온 이유는 2년 째 후원하고 있는 한 초등학생을 만나기 위해서다. 지난 2011년 봄 ‘어린이를 교육시키자’를 알게되었다. 바로 2009년 낸씨 김이 설립 한 사랑과 협력의 단체이다. 이 단체는 주로 서울에 거주 하는 후원자들의 모금을 통해 저소득층 자녀들이 학교 를 갈 수 있도록 도와주는 단체이다. 후원받는 아이들은 낸씨 김의 아버지가 운영하는 산 호세 기독교 학교를 다 닌다. 산 호세 버스 정류장에 도착하자 낸씨 김씨와 지 보이

가 마중나왔다. 우리는 삼륜 오토바이를 타고 학교로 향 했다. 내가 그동안 후원했던 아이와 얼굴을 맞대고 보는 순간이 감동적이었다. 나는 자멜이 유치원에 있을 때 부 터 후원하기 시작했고 지금 그녀는 어느덧 초등학교 2학 년이 되었다. 주어진 시간은 짧았지만 해야 할 일은 많았다. 내가 가 장 원했던 것은 학생들과 어울리며 그들이 배우는 모습 을 직접 보는 것이었다. 나는 몇몇 교실들을 둘러봤고 자 멜이 반에서 3차원 지형 미술 프로젝트에 임하는 모습을 지켜봤다. 오후엔 낸씨 김과 티 아저씨와 함께 시장으로 가 서울에서 온 후원금으로 EAC 가족들을 위해 품질 좋 은 쌀을 구매했다. 아이들은 밖에서 노는 시간이 있었고 나는 그 기회를 틈타 아이들에게 재밌는 야외 활동 게임 을 가르쳤다. 그것은 바로 줄넘기였다. 철물점에서 가져 온 긴 줄로 안되는 일은없다. 둘째날은 내가 산 호세에서 보내는 마지막 날이었다. 나는 자멜과 그녀의 가족을 만날 날이 오지 않을거라고

생각했지만 이날이 바로 그날이 됐다. 자멜 자매와 그녀 의 사촌을 데리고 그 지역에서 유명한 졸리비라는 식당 에서 점심을 먹을 기회가 주어졌다. 우리는 후라이드 치 킨과 스파게티를 맛있게 먹은 후에 아이스크림 선데이를 후식으로 먹었다. 우리에겐 최고의 대접이었다. 점심을 먹기 전에는 자멜의 가족을 위한 가정 제품들을 미리 살 수 있었다. 자멜의 집은 푸른 나무들에 의해 감춰진 울퉁불퉁한 시골길 뒷편에 자리잡고 있었다. 자멜 가족의 주거지는 작고 좋지 않은 환경에 있었지만 분위기 만큼은 매우 좋 았다. 자멜 가족은 그들이 받는 도움에 대해 매우 감사해 했고 자멜 어머니께서 이후 수십 개 정도의 신선한 아보 카도를 선물로 주셨다. 그중 어떤 건 직접 먹었고 몇 개 는 상쾌한 얼굴 팩으로 썼다. 이번 여행은 아직까지 제일 기억에 남는 경험 중 하나다.

실 직원들 사이의 소통을 가장 중요시 여기는 기업 은 실리콘 벨리에서도 구글이 정말 독보적이라고 할 수 있습니다. 구글의 놀라운 점은 단순히 자유로운 업무 문화를 말로만 강조하는 것이 아니라, 기업의 모든 면모 를 상호교류의 네트워크가 되게끔 총동원하여 디자인했다는 점입니다.

oogle's emphasis on communication between employees is one of the cuttingedge aspects among Silicon Valley’s big players.

A more surprising point is that Google not only emphasizes a flexible working environment but also has a structure designed in a way that allows for a network of efficient communication.

저는 이를 대표하는 예시 중 하나가 구글 회사 건물 곳곳에 설치되어 있는 화이트보드라고 생각합니다. 화이트보드는 구글 회사 건물의 벽판이라면 어디에든 깔려있다고 합니다. 심지어 휴게실에도 대형 칠판이 있는데, 낙서, 기괴한 그림, 온갖 아이디어들을 회사원들이 자유롭게 휘갈겨 쓴다고 합 니다. 아이디어가 생각날 때마다 언제든지 화이트보드에 옮 겨 쓸 수 있고, 그 옮겨 쓴 내용을 토대로 회사원들끼리 자유 롭게 그 아이디어에 대해서 소통하고 피드백을 서로 제공할 수 있다는 것이지요.

Whiteboards in Google are one example that represents Google's network of mutual communication. Any wall inside of Google has one of these whiteboards. Even in staff lounges there are big whiteboards on which employees are free to jot down any ideas, pictures or scribbles.

Whenever an employee comes up with an idea, he or she can transcribe it to the whiteboard, and from those written or drawn ideas all employees can freely discuss and give feedback. 화이트보드를 한 가지 예시로 들었지만, 이뿐만이 아니랍 니다. 구글은 본사 건물을 확장하기로 최근에 결정 했는데요 (2015년에 완공될 예정이라고 하네요). 확장 사유는 직원들 간의 사적 대화를 가장 잘 이끌어낼 수 있는 건물 구조를 건 설하기 위함이랍니다.

Google's whiteboard is not the only example of the company’s structure promoting innovation.

According to a study, when colleagues are in close proximity with one another, there is an increase in collaboration. When Michigan researchers studied 172 scientists, there was a higher possibility of collaboration among scientists if they had their moving lines overlapped (moving lines include laboratory, office space, nearby bathrooms, elevators). When such spaces were overlapped by three meters, the scientists’ collaboration increased by 20 percent. 이번 사례는 건물의 구조가 아닌, 인적 자원이 어떻게 구성 되어야 할지에 대한 논의에 맞는 내용입니다.

In another case, efficiency and innovation are not achieved through building structures, but rather by effectively grouping people.

This is also a point made in Malcolm Gladwell's “The Tipping Point.” <티핑포인트>에 나오는 '150의 법칙'에 대해 이해하려면 우선 사람들의 상호관계에 대해 생각을 해봐야 합니다. 우리 가 보통 'a, b, c가 서로 잘 안다'라는 말은 무엇을 의미하는 지 한번 생각해봅니다. 그 말은 기본적으로 a와 b, b와 c, 그 리고 c와 a가 서로에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는지 잘 안다는 말을 의미합니다.

To understand the “Rule of 150,” a rule that explains how and why communities of no more than150 people are more effective as they foster better relationships, we must first think about mutual relationships. Let's think about the statement “A, B, and C know each other well.”

What this statement means is that A and B, B and C, and C and A understand one another’s thoughts within their unique bilateral relationships. a와 b가 서로를 어떻게 생각하는지에 대해서도 c가 알아 야 정말 서로를 잘 안다고 할 수 있습니다.

However, “knowing one another very well” really should mean that C also knows how A and B see one another. 예를 들어 a와c, a와b가 친한데, a와 b가 서로 연인이라고 가정한다면, a와 b가 연인 사이라는 것을 모른다면 c는 정말 로 a와 b에 대해서 잘 아는 것이 아니겠지요.

For example, if we suppose A and C, and A

and B are friendly relationships but that A and B are lovers then we cannot say that C really understands the relationship between A and B. 이렇게 '서로 잘 안다', '서로 친하다'라는 말을 할 수 있으 려면 정말 여러 방향의 복잡한 관계가 필요한데요. 인간이 서 로 잘 알 수 있는 한계는 몇 명까지일까요? 과학자/인류학자 들은 150명이라고 합니다.

Statements like “knowing each other well” and “being friendly with one another” require more complicated relationships. So what do you think is the limit in the number of people that a person can know well? According to anthropologists it is 150 people.

150의 법칙은 우리가 의미 있는 (지식과 기억의) 상호교류 가 이루어질 수 있는 집단의 최고 규모가 150이라는 값진 사 실을 알려주지요. 다른 말로, 한 조직의 구성원의 숫자가 150 이 넘어선다면 서로가 서로에 대해서 잘 모르기 때문에, 의 사소통이 힘들고 상호소통의 협력체계가 구축되기 힘들겠지 요. 그 이상의 숫자를 묶으려면 비효율적인 체계나 권위적인 문화를 통해 '인위적'인 통제를 넣어야 한다는 게 <티핑 포인 트>의 요지입니다. 이와 같은 이유로 군대의 중대, 청교도 교 회의 분파 등이 대략 150명을 하나의 통제 집단으로 만들었 다고 합니다. 현대에는 '고어(Gore: 고어텍스 만든 회사)'라 는 회사가 이 법칙에 의거해 기업을 디자인했다고 합니다.

The “Rule of 150” tells us a valuable fact that the maximum number of people a group can contain to achieve effective mutual interaction is 150 people. In other words, if there are more than 150 people in a group, then communication becomes more tedious, which leads to difficulties in developing a cooperative system. The main point of “The Tipping Point” is that to bind more than 150 people, “artificial” controls must be utilized. For this reason, military companies or factions of the Puritan Church have historically been composed of 150 people. Movie info: Based on a true story, “The Blind Side” is a movie about the 2006 book “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game” by Michael Lewis. It deals with the growing up of Baltimore Ravens professional football player Michael Oher. 스키보드를 달라고 했는데 사케병을 들고 나오다니, 도대체 왜 그런 걸까요? 우리나라 사람들이 영 어를 할 때 특징 중 하나가 특정 자음 뒤에 자연스럽게 ‘으’나 ‘이’ 같은 모음 발음을 한다는 것입니 다. 예를 들면 sports는 원래 모음이 [하나인 단어지만, 한국어로 말하면 ‘스포츠으,오, 으’가 되어 총 세 개의 모음이 들어가게 되는 것이죠. 우리들은 ‘으’나 ‘이’가 들어가는 것을 대수롭 지 않게 생각하지만 원어민 입장에서는 기둥이 하나였던 집이 기둥 세 개의 집이 되어 버렸으니, 아 예 다른 집으로 생각해버려서 알아듣지 못하게 된 것입니다. 스키보드의 경우에도 원어민이 듣기에는 라는 기둥 두개인 집이 아니라 으으처럼 기둥이 네 개인 집이 되어 버린 것입니 다. 점원이 생각할 때 영어에서 이와 가장 비슷한 구조의 집이 사키바틀이었으니 사케병 을 가져올 수밖에요.

4) ㅁ(m), ㄴ(n), ㅇ(ng), ㄹ(l or r)을 제외한 자음으로 끝났을 때 참 다행스럽게도 ‘맘’, ‘눈’, ‘미팅’, ‘밀’처럼 ㅁ, ㄴ, ㅇ, ㄹ로 끝났을 때는 우리말에서도 아무런 모음이 들어가지 않습니다. 그나마 이러한 특징 덕분에 한국인이 일본인들보다 영어발음을 쉽게 배우는 것입 니다. 일본 사람들은 이런 단어들을 ‘몸무’, ‘눈느’, ‘미팅그’, ‘미르’처럼 ‘으’와 비슷하게 발음하기 때문에 원 어민들이 알아듣지 못하는 경우가 많습니다.
