The clean-up costs for the Fukushima nuclear disaster are expected to reach $58 billion (64.5 trillion won) as Tokyo Electric Power said steam was detected again in a reactor building on July 24.

Clean-up costs are five times more than what was previously estimated, but the Japanese government has so far allocated* just $10.4 billion.

Steam has been detected three times in the last week after the July 24th detection. TEPCO said it has not found any increase in radioactive* material but admitted that it could not pinpoint where the steam was coming from.

Hollywood studios actively collaborated* with Nazis in the 1930s for the sake of their economic prosperity* in Germany. “The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact with Hitler” by Ben Urwand of Harvard University reveals how American studios actively colluded* with Nazism.

Collaboration started out when the movie “All Quiet on the Western Front” was released in 1930 by Universal Studios. The movie, based on World War I, was banned by the German government because it portrayed the German army in a negative light.

In order to make a profit in Germany, Universal Studios modified

the film so that it advocated Nazism and then played it all around the world after buying into Germany’s demands.

Censorship even got tougher after Adolf Hitler seized power.

Accordingly, Paramount hired a Nazi as the company’s German representative in 1937 followed by the German manager of MGM divorcing with his Jewish wife who was later sent to a concentration camp.* Hollywood did not change its stance and did not start making anti-Nazi movies until the 1940s during World War II. Ben Urwand’s book will be launched on September 9.

독일 시장을 포기할 수 없었던 영화사는 나치 정권을 옹호하는 방식으로 영화를 바 꿨고, 독일 정부의 요구에 따라 전 세계에 상 영되기까지 했다. 한편 히틀러가 정권을 잡은 이후 검열은 더욱 심해졌다. 파라마운트는 1937년 독일 지사 대표에 나치 당원을 앉히고, MGM의 독일 대표는 유대인 부인과 이혼까지 했고, 그 부인은 강제 수용소에 끌려갔다.

2차 세계대전 중이던 1940년대에 들어서 야 할리우드는 반 나치 영화를 만들기 시작 했다. 이 책은 미국에서 9월 9일 출간될 예 정이다.

Schmeat, the lab-grown burger (cont.) ‘슈밋’ 연구실에서 자란 버거 (1면 기사) The hamburger patty took three months to grow from stem cells harvested from a c o w ’s s h o u l d e r and cost around US$330,000 (367 million won) to produce, though this is not an indicator of possible future mass production prices of such a product.

The burger patty, prepared by Chef Richard McGeown, was given to Austrian food futurist Hanni Rützler and the author of “The Taste of Tomorrow,” Josh Schonwald, for a taste test.

Rützler said that while it is quite similar to regular meat, due to a very low fat content, it was overly firm. Schonwald said the texture was just like meat with an absence of fat but that it felt like a regular hamburger. In taste, the burger did not get rave reviews but was considered to be alright.

While there is a certain “ick” factor and disbelief that consumers may have to get over in order for this innovation of food science to prosper, Sergey Brin, Google co-founder and the financer* of this project, claims that a certain level of doubt is good as anything that is truly innovative will face plenty of skepticism.

Though the concept sounds a little strange, when the myriad* negative health and environmental effects of the current meat industry are considered, it becomes quite obvious that change is necessary.

In a short video commentary about the project, Ken Cook, the co-founder of the environmental health research and advocacy organization Environmental Working Group, explains that 70 percent of antibiotics in the U.S. are used on poorly treated agriculture, 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from meat

Additionally, individuals that consume large quantities of meat are 20 percent more likely to have a chronic illness like heart disease or cancer because of the fat and its contents.

Harvard professor of biological anthropology, Richard Wrangham, foresees that “20 years from now, if you entered a supermarket, you would have the choice between two products that are identical. One is made in an animal. It now has this label on it that animals have suffered or have been killed for this product and it has an EcoTex because it’s bad for the environment and it’s exactly the same as an alternative product that is being made in a lab. It tastes the same, it has the same quality, it has the same price, or is even cheaper, so what are you going to choose? From an ethical point of view, it has only benefits.”

New evidence on the Imperial Japanese Army directly managing Asian women for sexual slavery was released on August 9.

The Center for Korean History at Korea University disclosed a diary of a Korean manager of Japanese brothels, who wrote during his stay in Myanmar and Singapore between August 1942 and December 1944.

The diary shows that the imperial army received revenue reports from military brothels, examined the bodies of sex slaves and regulated the relocations of sexual entertainment facilities.

Professor Park Han-yong, of the center, spoke at a press conference saying, “The diary shows the case in which the Japanese military, with an absolute personnel* management authority, issued direct orders and took control of issues regarding the comfort women (sex slaves).”

“This diary is a historical record that shows the Japanese military, the Japanese Government General of Korea and its military command in Korea were involved in the forced mobilization of Korean women for sexual slavery.”

The Japanese government argues that there is lack of evidence of sex slaves being forcibly mobilized by its military. It emphasized that civilian* entities were to blame for the crimes.

According to historians, at least 50,000 women from countries including Korea, China, the Philippines and Indonesia were forced into sexual slavery* to serve the Japanese Imperial Army.

An entry dated July 29, 1943 from the diary describes how a woman was ordered to return to one brothel after getting married and leaving.

Another entry, dated March 10, 1943, summarizes how some of the workers expressed

anger at the army’s 55th division ordering them to relocate to a different brothel. They later backed down under pressure from the army, the diary wrote.

The diary also confirms that the imperial army recruited Korean women to provide sex to frontline soldiers on at least four occasions.

According to the Korea University center, the writer of the diary moved to Southeast Asia in 1942 for business and stayed in the region until 1944.

The sexual enslavement issue has been one of the most controversial issues between Korea and Japan, as the Korean government views it as a human rights issue while the Japanese government refuses to acknowledge its wartime crime.

The annual joint exercise between Korean and U.S. forces will be launched this month to improve defense readiness against the North, the Combined Forces Command said on August 10.

Known as Ulchi Freedom Guardian (UFG), the joint exercise will be held August 19-30, involving the mobilization* of around 50,000 Korean forces and 30,000 U.S. military personnel.

The U.S. forces include about 3,000 troops currently stationed at U.S. bases and other bases in the Pacific, the CFC said.

Earlier on the same day, the UNC Military Armistice Commission informed the North at Panmunjom of the dates and nature of the exercise.

CJ Group chairman Lee Jay-hyun, 53, is expected to receive a kidney transplant* near the end of August at Seoul National University Hospital, CJ said on August 9.

A CJ spokesperson said, “If the court accepts our request that Lee’s confinement* be temporarily suspended, he is scheduled to receive the surgery.”

Lee was arrested on charges of embezzlement* of corporate funds and tax evasion*.

Lee will receive the surgery two days after he is hospitalized* for chronic kidney failure*. He is also

expected to stay at the hospital for three months or more to recover.

CJ said Lee’s wife would be providing the kidney.

His kidney failure was caused by uremia, which is urine poisoning.

Lee’s aides stated his illness worsened after his arrest for the alleged slush funds.

The CJ chairman is also suffering from other illnesses including high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia and Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy— a genetic neurological disease resulting in severe muscle loss.

Due to a U.S. trade panel ruling for Apple’s patent infringement* case, Samsung Electronics’ mobile devices (cellphones and tablets) face a sales and import ban in the U.S. On Friday, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled that Samsung infringes Apple’s patents on two levels regarding digital mobile devices. This includes headphone jack detection and touchscreen operation.

Orders sent to President Barack Obama, if not vetoed* within the 60day review period, will go directly

into effect.

Meanwhile, less than a week from this decision, the Obama administration vetoed an ITC decision that would have banned the sales of some Apple iPhones and iPads in the U.S. for violating Samsung patents.

An unprecedented ruling, such actions seem to reflect U.S. protectionism*.

The battle between Apple and Samsung has been ongoing for the past two years.

Science minister announces plans for start-up support center in Boston 미래창조과학부, 보스턴에 창업지원센터 개설 계획 Article by Hwang Yoon Translation by Kim Hong-ik

The minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced on August 8 the nation’s plans to set up a business support center for Koreans in Boston as early as November.

Minister Choi Mun-kee said the center will mostly work with Koreans starting up venture businesses in the U.S. “Boston has an outstanding environment for startup businesses with active cooperation between the industrial and academic circles and administrative* support for new businesses in attracting investment,” he said in New York.

The Boston center will be the second of its kinds

after the first start-up business center opened in Silicon Valley in May. The latest center has still not decided on whether it will be a facilitated* institute or a support program for new businesses, an official from the ministry said.

Choi stated that the center will work mostly in the medical, bioscience and software industries.

“South Korea‘s environment for start-ups still lacks a few vital elements, but Boston has a very good environment for new businesses, with technical support from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a large number of angel investors*,

who invest in venture firms even in early stages,” the minister said.

He further added that “the government will work to create new firms that directly aim for the global market from the very start by using Boston’s venture-friendly environment.”

Choi arrived in New York on August 6 for the U.S.-Korea Conference on Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship, which was attended by around 1,100 business people, officials and scientists from both countries.

Top stars Lee Byung-hun and Lee Min-jung commenced their wedding ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in central Seoul on August 11.

Around 900 guests and 100 members of the press attended the wedding, and hundreds of Korean and foreign fans flocked the hotel lobby before the ceremony.

"There were so many pleasant and tough experiences in both of our lives. I will appreciate

life's small joys," the groom said during a press conference before the wedding.

"There's a saying that rain (on a wedding day) is a good sign. I hope we have a happy marriage," the bride said, after she stated her surprise to have rain and thunderstorms in the morning.

The newlyweds’ honeymoon* is set for the Maldives.

Dutch football club PSV Eindhoven has confirmed that Park Ji-Sung will return to the topdivision of the team on a one-year loan deal.

Marcel Brands, technical director* of PSV, wrote on the team’s website on August 8 that Park will rejoin the team from his current English club, Queens Park Rangers (QPR).

“Chalk one up for innovation!” says Apple and the “Made in U.S.A.” cohort.

“Protectionism!” cries Samsung and Korea, Inc. The two consumer tech giants have been locked in a global patent battle since 2011 spanning ten different countries, no doubt expending the lives of countless trees and being a boon to the business of international law in the process. On August 4th, the U.S. president’s trade representative vetoed a ruling by his country’s International Trade Commission (ITC) banning sales of older model Apple iPads and iPhones. The decision to ban them came because Apple was deemed to have infringed Samsung’s patent mainly concerning 3G wireless technology. Such patents are termed “standards-essential patents (SEP),” covering technology that must adhere to industry-wide standards, in this case algorithms. ITC importbans are subject to review by the White House, but this veto was a rare event, being the first of its kind since 1987. The U.S. cited the ban’s possibly detrimental effects “on competitive conditions in the U.S. economy” for the overturn. It got better for Apple as the ITC on August 9th upheld a 2011 decision which found that Samsung infringed on two Apple patents including a so-called Steve Jobs patent, concerning touchscreen interface

technology, undoubtedly a “foundational patent” where smartphones are concerned. This would result in a ban on Samsung products affected by the ruling, unless the White House overturns it perhaps, in the interests of a competitive U.S. economy.

This litigation “war” between the world’s biggest smartphone maker and the world’s most profitable looks set to go on for the foreseeable future, as new lawsuits are filed and old ones are recycled, appealed and counter appealed.

While one does, reasonably or not, tend to side with the view that Samsung might be the party that is a little lighter on the “innovation” scales, it is difficult to appreciate Apple’s efforts on behalf of innovation considering patent litigation on all kinds of components and minutiae— finger swiping, for one—is hardly a recipe for innovation itself, either technical or in design. As for the notion of Apple’s wellbeing undergirding the U.S. economy’s, one should note that Apple employs a mere 52,000 people in the U.S. and pays disproportionately low taxes. On balance, the decision to prevent the U.S. market from being dominated by one firm as a result of a ban on a whole range of products may have been justified, but this little sideshow dispute between these rival trade partners has broader implications, 게 유리해졌다.

It is possible that FRAND (standard licensing obligation that is Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory) patent claims (in Samsung’s case) will continue to be hotly disputed elsewhere as long as Apple accuses Samsung of overpricing what is really a standard (by definition something which is affordable and accessible to all) and Samsung calls out Apple’s refusal to mediate on getting a license. Meanwhile, software, hardware and design patent claims (Apple’s) that deal with non-essential patents (which don’t have to be licensed, since it is in the owner’s capacity to set a licensing regime or not) will also tie up paperwork as infringement allegations are exchanged; to date, the record favors the California-based company.

Clearly, communications technology is a sensitive topic these days. With the fallout from the Snowden affair and the issue of “big data” gathering; government snooping and alleged “backdoor” international espionage (Huawei) continuing to occupy the attention of major governments, it might not be a bad idea to revisit our conceptions about surveillance and security, and our reliance on devices that presumably make our lives easier but come at certain intangible costs. hkw1990@naver.com

eet Eun Sun Grace Lee. This 19-yearold university student, whose family is originally from Korea, spent her whole life in Antipolo City in the Philippines, where her parents work as missionaries. She recently moved to Seoul to attend Yonsenderwood International College. When she’s home in the Philippines she loves the beach and spending time with friends.

hat was your first impression of Korean society upon arrival in Seoul?

서울에 왔을 때 한국사회의 첫 인상은 어땠나요?

Koreans are overwhelmingly fast-paced.

Filipino people are known to be very relaxed to the point that Koreans have difficulty adjusting to the culture and lifestyle. Secondly, I thought them to be rude at first and it was mainly because I have been pushed by all sorts of people at various places—the subways in particular, narrow corridors, even within church buildings! Those grannies can sure run and push. However, with time I have come to realize that no country is ever perfect and that there are beautiful and respectful aspects to the Korean culture.

한국 사람들은 정말 빠른 페이스로 살아요. 한국인들이 필리핀 문화와 삶 에 적응하기 힘들 정도로 필리핀 사람 들은 느긋한 삶을 살지요. 처음엔 한 국 사람들이 무례해 보였어요. 그 이 유는 지하철, 좁은 복도, 심지어 교회 건물 안 같은 곳에서도 많은 사람들에게 밀려서 그랬어요. 특 히 할머니 분들은 더 하더라고요. 뛰고 밀치고. 하지만 시간 이 지나면서 얼마나 한국이 완벽한지, 그리고 한국 문화에 아 름답고 존경할만한 면들이 있다는 것도 깨닫게 됐어요.

hat was the school environment like in the Philippines?

필리핀의 학교 환경은 어땠나요?

Different from the Korean-style education system, my school in Antipolo did not stress academic achievements as much. The teachers were more mindful of encouraging us to pursue our dreams and to develop within our areas of strength regardless of whether those areas were in academics, sports, fine arts, etc. Our school

also offered various activities for students to broaden their experiences. For instance we had clubs (chess club, academic contest clubs), sports, extracurricular activities (the spring theater production), student leadership groups (student council, National Honor Society), etc.

There are too many celebrated holidays in the Philippines. But Easter, Christmas, and the New Year would definitely be the top ones. How are they celebrated? Too complicated to explain everything but I’ll be very succinct.

Easter –There is a great march that happens.

There are people who voluntarily whip and crucify themselves believing that by doing so they will be atoned for their sins.

Christmas – Lots of partying, eating and karaoke. Families gather.

New Years— Fire Works. More partying. 필리핀엔 명절이 너무 많아요. 하지만 부활절, 크리스마 스, 설날이 그 중에서 제일 크죠. 어떻게 지내지냐고요? 설명 하기 너무 복잡하지만 간결하게 해볼게요. 부활절 – 큰 행진이 있어요. 어떤 사람들은 자발적으로 자신들을 채찍 질하고 십자가에 못 박아요. 그렇게 함으로 자신들의 죄를 속죄할 수 있 다고 믿기 때문이죠. 크리스마스 – 파티도 많고, 음식도 많이 먹고, 노래도 많이 부르는 날이 에요. 가족들끼리 모여요. 설날 – 불꽃놀이, 그리고 더 많은 파티가 있죠.

ny big political or economic situations while you were living there?

필리핀에 살 때 정치적 혹은 경제적 으로 큰 이슈가 있었나요?

There were coups but it did not affect me greatly.

Sometimes we were dismissed from school early, though that was rare.

The two official languages are Filipino and English. There are various dialects of Filipino but in our region we used Tagalog (and English). When I was young I was fluent in Tagalog but as I attended a n i n t e r n a t i o n a l s c h o o l I f o rg o t m o s t of it. It is not difficult getting by even without knowing Tagalog as it is normal for Filipinos (mainly those who live in the cities) to be bilingual. 두 개의 공식적인 언어가 있는데 바로 필리핀어와 영어에 요. 다양한 필리핀어 사투리도 있지만 제가 살던 지역에선 타 갈록과 영어를 썼어요. 여렸을 적엔 타갈록을 유창하게 했는 데 국제학교를 다니게 되면서 대부분 까먹었어요. 보통 필리 핀 사람들은 영어와 필리핀어 둘 다 하기 때문에 타갈록을 못 해도 큰 문제는 없어요.

쿠데타가 있었지만 제게 큰 영향을 주진 않았어요. 가끔 학교에서 일찍 보내준 적은 있었어요, 아주 가끔.

Pharrell Williams, although he has a baby face, he is only two years younger than our good old uncle Snoop Dogg. Pharrell was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia on April 5th 1973, and grew up playing the drums and keyboard and also joined the marching band playing snare. Being a musically talented young man, he later became the co-producer of “The Neptunes” with his high school buddy Chad Hugo. He is also the cofounder of Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream clothing, which is a hip clothing line that gained popularity in the earlier 2000s. His first single “Frontin’,” along with a few other songs, was a hit, but two of the songs that he featured in are now in the top 5 of the Billboard Charts! His smooth and stylish way has always been an inspiration to many, and not just to hip-hop artists but also to artists of different genres. Hakone is considered one of the most beautiful places to visit in Japan during the summer. It is located just two hours south of Tokyo by train and features high mountains, a valley, lush* nature, the famous Ashinoko Lake and lower temperatures at a time that the rest of the country is scorching.

From Hakone-Yumoto Station, I got a ticket all the way to Togendai Station for 2,130 yen or about 24,000 won. This package included taking the train all the way to the base of the mountain, then a tram up the side and a cable car up, over and down the other side. The views of the whole town and all the valleys were picturesque*, to say the least.

the cedar path, lined by cedars that are hundreds of years old. When we reached the end of the hike, we took a bus back to the train station and back to the big city.

I have been living in Japan for a few years now and Hakone is definitely one of the most beautiful places in Japan that I have visited. I highly recommend it. The locals are very nice, the food is amazing and the sites are fantastic.

Last but not least, the checkpoint.

At Gora Station, I got off the train and hopped onto the tram. It took about ten minutes to Souzan Station. Then we got off that and jumped onto the cable car. As we were going up, it was a bit foggy, so it felt like I was going into heaven. As we neared the top of the mountain, the fog cleared up and provided a beautiful view. The valley hugged lush greenery that shone in the morning light; so much nature and so well preserved. I was truly touched because you do not really see things like this often.

It was like jumping back into a time where nature ruled the world. As we neared the top, the cable car went through what is known as the Great Boiling Valley. It’s an active volcanic spot full of hot springs that contains smelly sulfur*.

We made a quick stop at the top of the mountain (Owakudani Station). I highly recommend this stop

This stop is also known for its black ice cream and black eggs. The delicious black eggs are cooked with sulfuric water, turning the shell black. It is said that for every egg you eat, you’ll add seven years to your life. After that, we went back to the station and continued down the other side of the mountain.

We finally got off at Togendai Station and decided to take the 25-minute ride on a pirate ship across the lake to see the Old Tokaido Highway Checkpoint, one of the most important of the Five Routes of the Edo Period.

We got off the boat at the Hakone-Machi stop and went to the Old Checkpoint. I loved it because I am a huge fan of the Edo Period and the end of the samurai era. After walking through the beautifully preserved checkpoint, we hiked through 걷히고 아름다운 전경이 보였다. 계곡은 아침 햇살에 빛 나는 우거진 자연을 품고 있었는데 그 무성한 자연은 보 존이 잘 되어있었다. 이는 자주 볼 수 있는 광경이 아니 기 때문에 진심으로 감동했다. 마치 자연이 세계를 지배 하던 시대로 돌아간 듯한 기분이었다. 정상에 가까워지 자 케이블카는 ‘지옥계곡’이라고 알려진 곳을 지났다. 이 는 냄새 나는 유황이 든 온천 못으로 가득한 분화구이다. 산 정상(오와쿠다니 역)에서 잠시 발걸음을 멈췄다. 필 자는 세계유산지인 후지산의 경치를 보기 위해 잠시 이 곳에서 멈춰보기를 권한다. 이 지점은 검은색 아이스크 림과 검은 계란이 유명한 곳이기도 하다. 맛있는 검은 계 란은 유황수로 삶아지며 이 때문에 껍질이 검게 변한다. 검은 계란을 하나 먹을 때마다 수명이 7년씩 길어진다는 말이 있다. 그 후, 우리는 다시 역으로 돌아가 산의 반대 편으로 내려갔다.

우리는 드디어 토겐다이 역에 도착했고 에도 시대에 가장 중요한 다섯 개의 경로 중 하나에 위치한 체크포인 트인 토카이도 고속도로 체크포인트를 보기 위해25분간 해적선을 타고 호수를 건넜다. 우리는 하코네-마치 역에 도착해 배에서 내리고 체크 포인트로 향했다. 필자는 에도 시대와 사무라이 시대 말 에 매우 관심이 많기 때문에 그곳이 좋았다. 보존이 잘 된 체크포인트를 통과하면서 우리는 수백 년 된 삼나무 들이 줄지어 선 길을 걸었다. 그 길의 끝에 도착했을 때 버스를 타고 다시 기차역으로 가 도시로 돌아갔다. 필자는 일본에서 산지 벌써 몇 년이 지났는데 하코네 는 일본에서 방문했던 가장 아름다운 곳 중 하나였다. 여 행지로 적극 추천한다. 지역 주민들은 매우 친절하고 음 식은 기막히며 경치는 환상적이다.

Social Explorer Network Delivering messages through flash mob 플래시 몹을 통해 사회에 메시지를 전하다 Han Soul, Kim Myung-joon, In Soo-hwan 전 세계적으로 강남스타일 열풍이 일어나면서 세계 도처에 서 미디어를 통해 각 나라 사람들이 ‘강남스타일’ 댄스를 추 는 영상을 많이 접해보셨죠? 외국인들이 한 곳에 모서 강남 스타일을 추고 있는 모습을 보면 참 뿌듯함을 느낍니다. 그것 을 통해 한국을 세계에 알리는 계기가 되었으니 싸이에게 정 말 감사할 일이죠!

I think that out of the many videos, readers might have encountered the Gangnam Style flash mob where people suddenly gathered and danced along with the song.

실행하고 있는 청년들이 많습니다.

Although the flash mob can be a form of entertainment to create memorable moments, it has become a creative and unique method to deliver messages to the society, a form of “collective intelligence” done by many passionate youths.

실제로도 요즘 페이스북에서 주목 받고 있는 ‘독도는 우리 땅‘이라는 플래시몹 또한 독도로 인해 불거지고 있는 일본과 의 외교마찰에 대한 우리의 생각과 국내 및 국제사회에 독도 에 대한 인식을 심어주고자 하는 취지에서 만들어졌다고 합 니다.

A good example would be the “Dokdo is our land” flash mob that is receiving heated attention through Facebook. It inspired awareness and thoughts about diplomatic disputes related to Dokdo for the international community.

“8.15 Attack” at the Hongik University area 홍대 부근에서 벌어지는 ‘815어택’

To celebrate National Liberation Day*, the Korea Social Festival Association (KOSFA) will hold a unique festival called the “8.15 Attack” at Eoulmadang Street, Mapo District on August 14 through 15.

At this event, participants wearing bridal masks (gaksital)* are to surprise passersby.

Contrary to past festivals that took an educational approach in raising history awareness*, this festival aims to enhance accessibility* and induce the voluntary participation of civilians.

In recent light of escalating tensions between Korea and Japan, KOSFA has decided to take on the concept of a cheerful and pleasant atmosphere rather than a serious one.

KOSFA will lend bridal masks to all participating civilians at a small fee, with all proceeds going to victims of sexual slavery known as “comfort women”.

Recently, KOSFA stirred a sensation among the festival community with its “Pillow Fight Festival,” held at the Cheonggye Square on July 4.

신발 가게를 영어로 옮기면 → a shoes shop or a shoe shop ?? 영문법에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 영역 중 하나인 명사 학습의 핵심인 셀 수 있는 명사 셀 수 없는 명사에 대한 구분이 완벽해졌다고 가정 하고 그 다음엔 무엇을 더 파고들어가야 할까 ?

이 문장의 주어인 Identity를 말하는 위 문장의 핵심은 고등학교 야 아니면 학생이야 ??? 그래, 학생이지.

두 개 이상의 명사들로 나열된 덩어리 (명사구), 그 안에서의 명사를 또 다시 구분해내는 실력 완성이 바로 그 다음이라고 할 수 있는데

착한 학생, 성실한 학생, 게으른 학생 등의 표현에서 학생 앞에 놓인 저 말들이 전부 형용사이 고등학교 학생 이라는 표현에서의 고등학교 역시 본래는 명사 이나 이 표현 안에서는 형용사 인거야.

두 사람의 짧은 대화로 이루어진 아래 예문을 살펴 보자.

I went to a ____________________ in downtown to get these beautiful shoes ! 이 이쁜 신발 사러 시내에 있는 신발 가게 갔었지.

왜 ? 명사와 명사가 어울려 만들어진 표현에서 앞의 명사는 형용사로써 뒤에 있는 명사를 자세하게 설명 해 주거든. 다시 말해

자, 제인의 말을 완성하기에 앞서, 내 신발 어딨지 를 영어로 말해볼까. 수업 때, 내 안경 어딨지, 내 신발 어딨지를 영어로 어떻게 말하죠 ? 라고 질문 하면 그 즉시 Where is my shoes 혹은 where is my glasses 라는 문장이 어김없이 들려온다. where is 대신 where are가 들릴 때는 십중팔구 나와 초급을 끝내고 바로 중급 수업으로 올라 온 학생들이 있는 경우이다. 종종 이야기 하지만 한국어에서의 명사와 영어에서의 명사는 그 성격이 너무도 다르다. 영어는 장사꾼들의 사고방식을 담은 언어임을 명심, 또 명심 하자. 장사꾼들은 셈에 무척이나 예민하다. 그러니, 명사 하나를 놓고도 셀 수 있는 명사, 셀 수 없는 명사를 반드시 분류한다는 사실만 염두에 두어도 명사를 문장에 쓸 때 적어도 한 번은 더 생각 해 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그렇다. 가위, 안경, 바지, 은 복수 명사, 즉 2개의 짝이 한 쌍을 이루는 명사들이며 더 중요한 것은 분리 되어서도 안 되고 될 수도 없는 명사들이다. 그러기에 이 세 가지 명사들은 항상 복수로만 취급 될 수 있기에 동사는 is 아닌 are만을 동반 하게 된다. 그런데, 똑같은 복수 명사의 일부이긴 하지만 장갑, 구두, 귀걸이는 좀 다. 르. 다.

본래는 명사지만 형용사 기능 !

신발 가게를 영어로 옮겨 보면 a shoe shop 혹은 store. 자, 그럼 아래 문장들에서 형용사로 활용 되고 있는 명사를 찾아 동그라미 !! ① ② ③ ④ ⑤ ⑥ ⑦ ⑧ ⑨ ⑩

Jane is a high school student.

Jane has a Spanish dictionary.

Jane has a beautiful pencil case.

Jane has a history test tomorrow.

Jane enjoys reading on her lunch hour.

Jane is going to get a part-time job during her summer vacation.

Jane has a part-time job in a sandwich shop.

Jane has to wash the store windows everyday.

Jane has a big vegetable garden in her house.

Jane loves eating garden vegetables.

정답은 ? high school, Spanish, pencil, history, lunch, summer, sandwich, store, vegetable, garden 마지막 두 문장이 재밌지 ?

장갑만 보더라도 낯 개로 분리가 되며 하나하나의 낯 개가 합해져서 한 쌍을 이루고 있기 때문에 내 장갑 어딨지 라는 문장은 두 개의 다른 문장이 있을 수 있어. 예를 들어, 한 켤레 모두가 없다면 Where are my gloves ? 가 되겠지만 한 짝만 없는 경우라면 Where is my glove ? 가 되어야 맞지.

같은 단어인데 자리를 바꾸면 의미마저 바뀌니까.

9번 문장은 텃밭의 의미를 나타내고 10번 문장은 정원에서 기른 채소라는 의미로 활용되고 있지.

문장의 구조를 엮을 때는 순서라는 것이 정말 중요하다는 것을 새삼 느꼈을 거야. 앞으로 독해를 할 때 두 개 이상의 명사가 나열된 구조를 보게 되면 앞 명사를 형용사로 인식하며 해석 하는 능력이 생겼기에 더 정확한 해석을 할 수 있게 된 자신의 모습을 보게 될거야.

영문법에서 명사 학습은 얼마나 더 세밀하게 나누어야 하는지 감이 올 거야. 서두에서 던진 질문이 뭐였냐면 신발 가게는 영어로 어떻게 표현 하는가 였지. 영어를 제법 해왔음에도 불구하고 정말로 많은 영어 학습자들은 shoes shop 이라고 답 해. 가장 중요한 a도 쏙 빼고 ! 저는 고등학교 학생입니다 라는 문장을 영어로 옮기면 → I am a high school student. 가 되겠지.
