A LOVE OF ADVENTURE … that’s a philosophy we subscribe to here at the magazine … and it also happens to be the tag line for the new dedicated Travel section we are launching in this edition.
Commencing on page 59 you will find a fascinating selection of exotic destinations, high-end cruise lines, memorable cultural experiences and the latest travel news from here and around the world.
In our inaugural issue, Cove Travel Manager Susan shares some of her most memorable experiences, Marj writes about her recent trip to India and I relive my ‘royal encounter’ with the regal Queen Elizabeth cruise ship.
We also explore the stunning InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef
and introduce Oceania Cruises’ Executive Culinary Director, Alexis Quaretti.
Naturally, rest of the magazine is full of interesting content as well, starting with our feature interview with Renée Zelwegger.
The Hollywood actress is back on the big screen for the fourth instalment of Bridget Jones and took time out to chat about the character, what it was like returning to the popular role and why taking a break from acting was so important for her career.
If you enjoy good food and wine, be sure to check out the Menus & Venues section which highlights some of the best restaurants across the Coast.
Elsewhere in the magazine, we showcase the latest men’s fashion collection from Orlebar Brown, test drive the new Aston Martin SUV and preview the upcoming Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.
And keeping with the travel theme, albeit a bit closer to home, our competition prize in this issue is a weekend for two at the stunning The Manor Resort on Mount Tamborine so be sure to get your entry in.
Happy travels.

The thumping V8s and outrageous tailfins are gone, but new Cadillacs will be on Australian roads this year. General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV), a company established in the wake of Holden’s demise to sell selected American cars here, says it will launch with the Lyriq, a luxurious, all-electric SUV. Estimated on-road price is around $150,000. Other models will follow. It’s believed to be more than 50 years since new Cadillacs were sold here. The make’s arrival will provide a fresh-looking alternative to the traditional German luxury cars and, being American, it’s guaranteed to be loaded with luxury equipment. The company is planning a sales system, where buyers will deal directly with the importer instead of an agent.

Hollywood superstar Renée Zellweger is back for a fourth outing as Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.
BRIDGET JONES IS BACK in the much-anticipated fourth instalment of the hugely popular films based on Helen Fielding’s books.
Directed by Michael Morris, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy stars Oscar-winning actress Renée Zellweger in the lead role.
She is joined once again by Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Emma Thompson, who reprise their roles as Daniel Cleaver, Mark Darcy and Doctor Rawlings, respectively, from previous instalments.
Also joining the cast for this outing are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leo Woodall, Isla Fisher, Josette Simon, Nico Parker and Leila Farzad.
In the film, Bridget navigates life as a widow and single mum with the help of her family, friends – and former lover, Daniel.
Back to work and on the apps, she is pursued by a younger man and maybe – just maybe – her son’s science teacher.
Here, Renée talks about returning to play Bridget Jones, what she loves about her character and what audiences can expect from this latest instalment.
The Hollywood superstar also opens up about why she took a break from acting, whether she has ever ‘faked it ‘till you make it’ like her hapless character, her thoughts on online dating and more.
How has it been to step back into the shoes of Bridget Jones again?
It’s the best job in the world. I love Bridget Jones.
I’ve always loved Bridget Jones, and I love her more with every reunion.
I think she’s just so much fun, and the relationships that I’ve made over the course of experience – it gets richer and richer with time.
So spending time in her world and surrounded by the gang – it’s just the best.
I mean you get to come to work with great people creatively and personally.
Dating has changed a lot since the first Bridget Jones movie with social media, etc. What is your take on that?
My thoughts on it? Well, I try not to make up opinions about things that I don’t understand.
So, I kind of tend to stay away from deciding whether or not it’s a good or bad thing.
But I imagine that it’s made a lot of lonely people who are too shy or don’t have time to go out and look around every night and see if they make a connection with somebody, you know, very happy.
And then on the other hand, when it first was introduced, I thought, ‘Boy, that opens you up to so many vulnerabilities’.
‘And I don’t mean personal, I mean, physical [laughs] – ‘Hey! Come meet me at such and such corner’.
I’m like, ‘I don’t know if that’s a good idea’. But, ‘Okay. What should I wear?’ [laughs]
Anyway, you know, we’ve got to adapt right? So … >>

Did you find it easy to slip back into the role of Bridget Jones after almost a decade away from her?
Yeah. It’s the best job in the world. It really is.
Revisiting a fictional character who’s sort of evolved in a parallel universe in real time, alongside your own experiences, is so unique.
And meeting up with her again, you know, throughout the years.
Each time is a reconnection and a rediscovering process – because none of us are the same person in different chapters in our lives.
Trying to figure out what’s happened in the interim to Bridget according to Helen’s [Fielding]
experiences in her books and how that might change who Bridget is or her perspective, her values, how she carries herself, all of those things.
It’s fun to kind of find a way into her psyche again and what that might look like.
And how she may not have changed is equally interesting, you know?
So, yeah, it’s always a process of rediscovery.
You took a hiatus from acting for several years. What did that teach you and would you ever consider doing that again?
Oh, certainly.
If it feels necessary or if there’s something else that seems important to explore – certainly.
And I wasn’t wrong. I have no regrets about it. None at all.
I feel like it’s really useful.
I mean, I don’t think it’s anything new.
Daniel Day-Lewis does it all the time and nobody says he’s making a comeback.
You know, he just went away and lived life and grew as a person and learned something new and probably became a more interesting person as a result of it.
And that was my experience.
Those were my hopes from it.
You know, I was bored with myself, and I felt like I was redundant, and I couldn’t stand listening to myself talk about the same things over and over again.
I needed to grow and try something new, to evolve. You know?
Your chemistry with Leo Woodall and Chiwetel Ejiofor is fabulous in this. Were you involved in any way in deciding on who your male co-stars were going to be?
I think there was very little conversation about who was going to play these roles.
It was pretty inevitable from the beginning.
We all had our fingers crossed that there would be a couple of ‘yeses’ and hurrah.
Bridget understands the concept of ‘fake it ‘till you make it’ very well, be it at her job or just to wiggle out of uncomfortable situations. Can you talk a little bit about when you were starting out in the business – did you ever exaggerate a skill or just straight lied about doing something?
Yes! [laughs]
I was just thinking no, while you were going through that, I was like, ‘Yeah no, I never did that’ because I kind of just go into an audition to have a good day.
And I know what I want to try to achieve that day, and it’s not really about anybody else or what happens from it.
It’s just about having a good time, you know? And feeling good about the creative process.
I was never, like, ‘Hope I get this part’, but more, ‘I hope it goes well today’.
So it never felt necessary.
Except … when I was asked to audition for a beer commercial when I was in college [laughs].
They were like, ‘So, can you rollerblade?’
Now this was a new thing, right, when I was in college, the rollerblades.
Because we all grew up going to the skating rink in Texas for birthdays and things like that so I figured, ‘How hard could it be? You just move the wheels around. This is going to be the same sport’.
So I went and rented some rollerblades, gave it a shot, thought, ‘I’m definitely going to die’, and went to the audition. >>

‘Here, put on this bikini. Here, put these skates on. Here, carry this 12-pack on your shoulder and can you start at the top of that hill?’ [laughs]
Thank God they blocked the street below because if there was oncoming traffic, we would not be having this conversation today.
But, I mean, it’s a really good way to leave the world if you’re going to exit.
You know what I mean? Buried under a pile of beer.
But you managed to pull it off?
It pretty much paid for college. So yeah.
There has been some discussion about the toxic female image of Bridget Jones. What do you think about it and how has it changed in the last two movies?
That’s really interesting.
I was not aware of those conversations, but we were just talking earlier about her self-scrutiny.
And I never perceived it as her punishing herself in some way or trying to, yeah, push herself into fitting and matching some social paradigm about beauty, what’s considered socially acceptable in terms of your presentation.
I never thought there was anything wrong with her.
I’d always thought of it more generally as a representation of how we pick on ourselves about things that are entirely of no consequence – because she’s not an overweight person.
And she’s cute and there’s nothing at all wrong with her or her experiences or where she is.
It’s just that relatable sort of universal experience of being afraid that you won’t measure up.
And how does that manifest in each of our lives?
It’s not specific to her tearing herself apart physically.
That, I think, is more about how each of us has our own thing that we like to focus on.
And I don’t find it toxic, in my opinion.
I think the way that she manages it is funny because she’s self-deprecating in a way we hear that voice in our own heads about whatever it might be.
But her optimism, she’s never defeated by it, she’s self-scrutinising and self-deprecating – but she’s laughing.
And she finds a way through whatever it is, and triumphs in the end – despite the execution of things not going to plan.
I think that’s inspirational. It gives everybody permission to be who we are and to feel like, ‘Yeah, I don’t have to get it right. And I can still be happy, and I can still get the guy, and I can still do well. Even if it looks messy on the outside, I’m still good at what I do. And I’m still apparently cute enough for these handsome men to want to share my life’.
Bridget Jones dates a younger man in the new film – why is this still something people talk about in this day and age? What’s your take on that?
Yeah. I wonder why it’s a novelty?
People are talking about all the films that are showing this dynamic as the central relationship.
And yeah, I wonder why the novelty?
Because this is nothing new in society [laughs]. You know? ‘Mrs. Robinson’, ‘Me and Mrs. Jones’, ‘Mad About the Boy’.
Finally, there are a lot of easter eggs in this film for the fans, with references to the previous movies – did you detect many of those while you were making the film and did you add any yourself?
Well, I don’t think that the intention was ever to use nostalgia as a device, as a contrivance. I think it’s the familiarity of things that we’ve shared with Bridget Jones since the beginning that have made its way into this chapter of her life now.
And why wouldn’t they?
We all keep photographs in our house that represent a particular time in life, children at a younger age, friends in your twenties, clothes.
I still wear the same clothes that I wore 25 years ago, and I love them.
You know, things like that.
And, also, I think Michael’s [Morris] intention was to give that wink, just to bring those warm feelings back of that connection that we felt to this character throughout the different chapters of her journey.

Orlebar Brown’s new Spring ’25 collection has everything you need to travel in style.
INSPIRED BY AN ECLECTIC mix of art, music, and playful gatherings poolside in 1970s Palm Springs, British menswear brand Orlebar Brown has launched its Spring ’25 collection.
With designs reminiscent of a dashing photograph of Bryan Ferry in 1978 leaning against palm wallpaper wearing a gorgeous, biscuit linen suit, the collection also reflects the colours and creativity of David Hockney.
Repeating, geometric prints lead the way in oranges, blues, and greens complemented by refined floral prints in bright colours, while an elevated selection of polka dots works well with a print borrowed from classic menswear.
Stripes are always strong in Spring with classic styles and vibrant colourful expressions in new towelling shirts and shorts.
Silk and Italian linen shirts in new prints and rich colours are mixed with modern, easy fitting trousers.
The season’s hero colours are an enveloping Agave Green and an elegant Damson colour, balanced with Calypso orange, Eldorado yellow, Caddie green, Khaki, and California blue.
Orlebar Brown is also delighted to bring new additions to its range of resort ready accessories, launching refined, brown leather sandals called Muro and a rugged navy and black weekender bag as well as a luxe canvas beach tote.
Across the season, Orlebar Brown continues its commitment to sustainability; measuring the impact on the planet, reducing across production, products, and operations, and balancing what cannot be reduced through Blue Carbon Projects, restoring ocean ecosystems. >>
ORLEBAR BROWN formed as British resort wear and lifestyle brand in 2007.
The label has reinvented holiday style for men, with their classic Bulldog shorts remaining the original and best ‘shorts you can swim in’.
Instantly recognisable due to their hallmark side-fasteners, the brand’s classic swim shorts are made from 100 per cent recycled plastic and come with a 5-Year Guarantee as a testament to their quality and durability.

Jason Murakami sat down with Absolute Footcare Senior Podiatrist Nathan Chock to talk about the benefits of biomechanics in both young and older clients.
IRISH AUTHOR GEORGE BERNARD SHAW could not have been more accurate when he said ‘Youth is wasted on the young’.
The substance of this quote becomes truer for most of us as we get older and quality of life quickly becomes a priority issue.
Absolute Footcare, podiatrists, bio-mechanics and pain relief experts, have been servicing Gold Coasters for 25 years after opening its Australia Fair Shopping Centre clinic in 2001.
So what does a podiatrist do?
Essentially, we keep people walking and running as we specialise in diagnosing, treating, and preventing conditions related to the feet, ankles, knees and hips.
Is Absolute Footcare only a podiatry clinic?
No ... we specialise in diagnosing and treating foot pain and a wide range of lower limb issues that people experience every day.
Our team works with patients of all ages and backgrounds, from professional athletes to the elderly, providing tailored solutions to address their specific needs.
We offer a variety of services such as general foot care, prescription foot orthotics, sports podiatry, diabetic foot care, and paediatric podiatry.
Our goal is to help our patients maintain healthy, pain-free feet, improve mobility, and prevent future issues, thus ensuring our patients lead an active and comfortable life.
What is biomechanics?
In podiatry, biomechanics focuses on the way our feet, ankles, knees and hips function and how they interact with the rest of the body during movement.
It involves analysing posture, gait, alignment, and the forces acting on the body during movement.
Understanding biomechanics is crucial for diagnosing and treating various conditions, such as abnormal foot alignment, gait issues, and sports-related injuries.
By assessing biomechanics, we can develop personalised treatment plans to correct or alleviate these issues.
What are the biomechanical issues facing older Australians today?
Older adults often face decreased joint mobility, weakened muscles, and changes in foot structure, such as the development of flat feet or arthritis.
These issues can lead to poor balance, instability, and pain while walking, running or standing.
Foot problems like pain, bunions, and calluses are also more prevalent.
Decreased circulation and sensation, particularly in diabetic patients, can contribute to more serious complications like foot ulcers or infections.
We work with elderly patients to manage these conditions and improve their mobility and quality of life, often with the help of prescription orthotics, foot care education, and preventative routine treatments.
Do young Australians also face biomechanical issues?
Young Australians, especially those involved in amateur or professional sports and even those leading sedentary lifestyles, face a variety of biomechanical challenges.
Active children often experience injuries like heel pain, including Sever’s disease (growth plate inflammation), shin splints and knee pain.
This is often due to pressure of competing in sports and has a very real impact in performance.
On the other hand, sedentary habits, such as prolonged sitting, can lead to postural issues and gait abnormalities.
These problems may result in discomfort in the feet, ankles, knees, and lower back.
We often treat children who benefit from prescription orthotics to support proper alignment, promote healthy foot development, and prevent long-term problems.
Early intervention with biomechanical assessments and prescription orthotics can help ensure young Australians maintain optimal function, prevent pain, and stay active in both their sports and everyday activities.
What are the recent developments in podiatry practices?
One of the most notable developments is the increased use of 3D scanning and pressure analysis technology for more precise assessments of foot mechanics and alignment.
Treatment modalities like shockwave therapy have become popular non-invasive treatments for conditions like heel pain and tendinitis.
There’s also been a growing focus on preventative care, with podiatrists educating patients on the importance of foot health and early intervention.
Excitingly, Absolute Footcare has recently been asked by companies, athletes, and individuals from around Australia to create prescription orthotics for their specific needs.
With the integration of online technologies, we can now provide everyone with access to
prescription orthotics, no matter where they are located and for affordable prices.
Why are biometric issues important for young sports men and women?
Biometric issues are crucial for young athletes because they directly impact performance and injury prevention.
Proper biomechanics ensures that an athlete’s body is moving in a way that maximises efficiency and minimises strain on joints and muscles.
Poor alignment or abnormal gait patterns can lead to overuse injuries, such as stress fractures, tendinitis, or sprains, particularly in growing athletes.
For example, issues like flat feet, misalignment, or muscle imbalances can alter how force is distributed through the lower limbs, leading to early wear and tear.
By addressing these biomechanical problems early on, we can optimise performance, reduce the risk of injury, and help athletes reach their full potential while maintaining long-term foot and body health.
Do you see a positive effect on sports persons using this new technology?
Absolutely. We’ve seen a positive impact on sportspeople using the new technologies available at Absolute Footcare.
Our 3D scanning and pressure analysis technology provide us with highly detailed insights into an athlete’s biomechanics, allowing us to create prescription orthotics that correct misalignments and improve performance.
With our online prescription platform, athletes across the country now have access to these tailored solutions, regardless of location.
We’ve had athletes from various sports report reduced injury rates, faster recovery times, and enhanced performance, just because they have the correct prescription.
In addition, non-invasive treatments like shockwave therapy have helped expedite healing processes, enabling athletes to return to their sport quicker and with less pain.
By leveraging technology, we’ve made it easier for sports people to access the care they need to stay healthy and perform at their best.
If you could be Mayor for one day what would you do?
If I were Mayor for a day, I would focus on improving the health and well-being of children in the community by implementing foot-health screening programs in schools to identify early biomechanical issues.
By focusing on prevention and education, we can help young athletes stay healthy, active, and perform at their best.

Penfold’s continues to produce some of Australia’s most revered red wines
WORDS TONY HARPER
YESTERDAY, COURTESY OF A GOOD FRIEND, I tasted a 1991 Penfolds St Henri and it was a wonder; the embodiment of why we covet, cellar and finally open bottles of pampered wine.
In approximately equal measures it was built on the unmistakable Penfolds DNA (which has flowed unceasingly, ignoring time, changes of winemaker and a bedazzling mix of vineyards), the freshness and build of a wine from a terrific vintage, and the complexities that age can add to a wine with the right pedigree and the right year.
Thank you, Chris, for the experience.
Around 34 years ago John Duval was the Chief Winemaker at Penfolds, so he was the responsible party for the St Henri; his tenure ran from 1986 until 2002, and he was custodian of so many incredible, legendary wines.
The wonderful siblings of Penfolds Grange from the 1990 and 1991 vintages still haunt the conversation at dinner tables populated by winebores (yep, count me in).
And usually it is the richer, more bombastic 1990 that edges the argument.
But I’ve always favoured the more elegant, more poised 1991; it’s the almost perfect Ferrari California (the late 1950’s/early 1960’s 250 GT of course) being outgunned by the muscle-bound 512 BB.
It’s all about the public’s love of horsepower over that of finesse.
And the 1991 St Henri showed remarkable finesse (alongside surprising vigour and freshness for a 34-year-old wine).
I’ve borrowed a tasting note from The Rewards of Patience, a Penfolds-centric book written by Andrew Caillard MW (a man with a terrific palate and perhaps – of anyone outside the company – the deepest insight into the Penfolds story):
“Medium-deep crimson. Intense praline, mocha, tobacco, redcurrant, sage aromas. Well-concentrated, generous and smooth with rich mature praline, redcurrant, sweet fruit flavours, lovely mid-palate buoyancy and fine, slinky, graphite texture. Finishes long, sweet and minerally with a lacy tannin plume. Expansive and expressive. Drink now or keep. 90% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.”
That was written in 2013, and with an additional decade and a bit, not much has changed with the wine.
Maybe the mocha and tobacco notes have increased a little, and the fruity things have subsided.
The perplexing thing about St Henri is that (unlike most of its stablemates) it doesn’t rely on oak flavours for its qualities and characters.
It matures in large-format, old oak; Penfolds Grange matures in brand new American oak barriques, so fresh oak flavours are an important part of its style.
The two wines should be poles apart in character.
But here’s the puzzle: they aren’t.
Which brings me back to paragraph one, and the Penfolds DNA.
There is something unmistakably ‘Penfolds’ about all of the reds the company produces, from Koonunga Hill through to Grange.
Once you’ve tasted a few you won’t mistake them for anything else.
And what shapes that kinship is a plushness, a vibrancy of fruit, a decadence that is quite unique to the brand and one that has followed the Penfolds wines since Max Schubert first dabbled with barriques in the 1950’s, inadvertently changing the trajectory of Australian red wine.
Part of the answer, I think, lies with an inherent philosophy: while Penfolds owns plenty of vineyards, its wines – with a few exceptions –steer clear of the ‘single vineyard’ tag.
Instead, the company sources from both its own vineyards, and those of contract growers, giving it a broad palette from which it can craft its wines.
It’s a lot like the way the larger champagne houses source widely so that they can deliver a certain style and unrelenting quality, vintage after vintage. Clever.
But I have a hunch that there’s as much magic in the making as there is the vineyard sources.
I don’t have a definitive insight, but the suppleness and richness of the Penfolds reds reeks of clever tannin management and careful, meticulous elevage.
And – since the day Max Schubert took the reigns as Chief Winemaker – there have only ever been four that have held the position: after Max there was Don Ditter, followed by John Duval.
Today Peter Gago holds the reigns and he has done a remarkable job at keeping the Penfolds flag aloft.
Perhaps that small line of succession has allowed the recipe, the magic formula, to be passed along without the befuddlement of Chinese whispers.
At loosely $1,000 a bottle, Penfolds Grange is undoubtedly expensive, but on a world scale (some red burgundies are now close to $10,000 on release) it’s kind of sensible.
Especially if you think about its pedigree, style and quality.
And while there are other Australian reds playing in the same fiscal sandpit, it’s only Henschke Hill of Grace that can truly consider challenging Grange as Australia’s top wine.
But let’s, for a moment, forget about the wines that are perhaps not beyond our reach, but certainly beyond our desire to accompany a Wednesday night bolognese.
This is where the Penfolds magic makes its play: Bin 389 (the baby brother to Grange – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, aged in barrels that previously held Grange) is a mere $90.
Bin 128, somewhere around $60.
That wondrous bottle of St Henri in today’s vintage (2021) is closer to $190, but the sublimity of the 1991 speaks volumes for the canniness of spending the money.
All of which is to say that you can taste the Penfolds experience without the need to shell out for a bottle of Grange.
However, if you can …

The expansion of the Sanctuary Cove Marina includes 25 new berths on J Pier, allowing direct sea trials of high-end yachts and reinforcing SCIBS as the premiere on-water showcase in the Southern Hemisphere.
One of the standout attractions will be the Candela C-8, a 100 per cent electric hydrofoiling boat that glides silently over the water for a smooth, sustainable ride.
“We are incredibly excited to premiere the Candela C-8 at SCIBS,” says Chris Hrones, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Carbon Yachts, which will debut the Candela C-8.
“There is no better setting to showcase the future of sustainable luxury on the water.”
One of the Show’s most anticipated luxury vessels is the RJ115 M/Y Pazienza, a 35-metre, 300 GT Explorer Yacht.
Built by Italy’s renowned Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) and launched in 2024, this ultra-luxurious, Australian-owned vessel that accommodates up to 13 guests and five crew members, seamlessly blends hospitality, style, and performance.
While designed for exploring remote destinations, M/Y Pazienza spares no expense on luxury lifestyle.
“The RJ range demonstrates how style and elegance can perfectly complement the rugged character of our explorer yachts,” says Vasco Buonpensiere, CEO of CdM.
Its lavish features include a study, dressing room and expansive owner’s suite on the Main Deck; a Sun Deck that rivals a penthouse terrace, complete with a stylish outdoor kitchen, an opulently designed bar, a panoramic aft pool, and an external helm station that transforms the deck into a fully functional Flying Bridge.
New exclusive partnerships at the Lagoon Beach Club
SCIBS 2025 will further elevate its luxury experience with the Lagoon Beach Club, supported by major new partnerships with prestige sponsors Gold Bullion Australia, LVMH Moet Hennessy, and GMSV.
“The synergy between Gold Bullion Australia and SCIBS is a natural fit,” says Scott MacRae, GBA Group Director.
“At GBA Group, we are committed to providing outstanding service and premium precious metals to those who seek to preserve and grow their wealth, while SCIBS is renowned for showcasing the finest in luxury yachts, marine craftsmanship and experiences.
“The alignment of our brands is a testament to our shared values of quality, exclusivity, and prestige.”
SCIBS 2025 is also thrilled to be one of the world’s premium venues chosen for the un veiling of easy-to-drink champagnes, on ice and all-day, at the pop-up Veuve Clicquot Sun Club.
While the RICH and RICH Rose flows, showgoers can relax poolside at the all-inclusive Beach Club.
The all-inclusive Lagoon Beach Club offering will feature:
• Exclusive Boat Show access
• InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort all-day grazing menu
• A p op-up Veuve Clicquot Sun Bar serving Veuve Clicquot
• Free-flowing beverages including Whispering Angel Rose and tasting experiences
• Live entertainment
• A luxury beach club atmosphere overlooking the resort’s Lagoon Pool and marina
A line-up of industry giants
SCIBS 2025 will showcase an exceptional collection of world-renowned marine businesses, including Australian Marine Centre, Dometic, Garmin, Horizon Motor Yachts, Iliad Catamarans, JSW Powersports, Leopard Catamarans, Maritimo, Northside Marine, Palm Beach Motor Yachts, Raymarine, Riviera, Princess Yachts, Shimano, Suzuki, The Yachtsales Co., TMG, and Yachtsman International.
“SCIBS is where the marine industry does business,” explains Corey Rattray-Wood, Head of Events at Mulpha Events.
“Every year, our show exhibitors secure incredible sales results, and 2025 will be no exception.”
Last year’s sold-out SCIBS event drew 334 exhibitors, 767 boats (including a recordbreaking 356 on the water), and over 2,500 marine products.
SCIBS proudly supports World Boating Day on 24 May 2025, where companies within the leisure boating sectors open their doors in a variety of formats to provide global access into their world with a focus on the people behind the scenes and the lifestyle that boating, and yachting provides.
The 36th Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show will be held from 22 – 25 May, 2025.
A must-attend event for marine enthusiasts, industry leaders, and luxury lifestyle seekers, last year’s SCIBS event contributed more than $400 million to the Queensland economy, with $380 million in direct industry sales and $20 million in visitor expenditure.

If you are in the market for a superior SUV, Aston Martin’s DBX707 AMR23 ticks all the boxes.
WORDS CHRIS NIXON
WHO NEEDS AN SUV THAT DOES 300 KMH? The answer is the same as for buyers of Rolex watches or diamond rings: if it’s there and they can afford it, they’ll buy it.
Head comes second to heart.
Exclusivity is the thing and the Aston Martin DBX707 certainly has credentials as a very exclusive SUV.
It carries the badge of a 112-year-old British sports car icon, has as siblings models the glamorous Vantage, DB12, Vanquish, Valhalla and Valkyrie sports cars and is seen on tracks around the world as the official Formula 1 Medical Car.
In fact, its F1 duties have spawned a new special edition named the DBX707 AMR23, which pays tribute to Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso scoring six podiums from the first eight races of the 2023 season.
The answer to the opening question of this story might be that world champion Alonso could absolutely justify a DBX707 in his garage.
The AMR23 now on sale in Australia comes in the same Podium Green-with-lime-accents paintwork as the F1 Medical Car and the race cars of Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Take off the stickers and light bar on the roof and drive to the shops – you can‘t get more exclusive than that.
And if you’ve bought one here, I bet your invitation to the Aston Martin suite at the Australian Grand Prix is in the mail.
The AMR23 is mostly about cosmetic upgrades such as the paint colour and interior carbon-fibre trim, but it also features the same 520 kiloWatt (707 horsepower, hence the name) V8, 4.0 litre, twin-turbo Mercedes-AMG with nine-speed auto as the ‘base’ model.
That’s good for a 0-100 kmh sprint in 3.3 seconds and top speed of 310 kmh, sufficient at least to tag on the back of a snarling Formula 1 field.
Riding on enormous 23-inch wheels and Pirelli P Zero tyres covering carbon-ceramic disc brakes the size of pizza dishes, the Aston Martin does a great impersonation of a sports car.
It’s surprisingly nimble in or out of town, although the driver must be aware of the 2.2 tonne bulk and tall SUV stance as the car hurtles into bends or strains the limits of those fabulous brakes.
The AMG V8 is awesome too, as docile or fierce as the driver demands.
It is still one of the best high performance engines around, whether in an Aston Martin or a common-or-garden Mercedes.
The blend of bottomless performance and gentleman’s club comfort makes the DBX707 special.
British craftsmen do this stuff so well.
Interior surfaces like the dashboard, centre console and door handles and trims are covered in soft, smooth leather moulded to shape.
The stitching is perfect, whether it’s the trim or seats.
Being a sizeable SUV, there’s plenty of seating and cargo space, meaning the DBX would be an entirely practical daily driver, albeit with dynamic abilities that rarely would be touched.
On-road with inevitable bespoke options would require more than $500,000, but that may even be considered fair value when a Ferrari Purosangue of similar performance will cost twice as much.
In a very small, exclusive niche for super-SUVs, the Aston Martin DBX707 AMR23 does its job very well.
Its sales success has also ensured that a sometimes shaky brand is at last enjoying some stability.
There’s a new dealer in Brisbane now if you are interested.
The BYD Atto 3 Essential is part of a new breed of affordable electric vehicles.
JUST AS GROWING POPULARITY brought the prices of mobile phones crashing down 30 years ago, electric cars now are finally reaching the point of everyday affordability.
The latest Chinese car, the BYD Atto 3 Essential, has gone on sale at a list price of $29,990, making it at the time of writing the cheapest EV in Australia – and barely more expensive than similar-size cars with conventional petrol engines.
These are not the kinds of cars we usually mention in Cove, but the influence of growing Chinese imports – especially EVs – is challenging the established car business so significantly that readers soon could find a luxury Zeekr, Haval, or Leapmotor on shopping lists alongside traditional favourites from the so-called legacy brands.
The newcomers simultaneously are overcoming scepticism about battery-electric power and Chinese quality.
Price reductions are happening across the EV market, with models of various sizes and specifications from Chinese makers BYD, GWM,
MG and even Tesla posting bargains over the past few months.
While the lack of charging infrastructure still compromises the full potential for long-distance country journeys in EVs, they’re becoming increasingly viable for urban use.
A small electric car with battery range of 350-400 kilometres should be more than adequate for cheap-as-chips urban daily commuting and running around town.
This advantage is also improving with the growing availability of affordable home-charging units – petrol company Ampol has joined the market – and enhanced even further by the potential to draw ‘free’ electricity from rooftop solar systems.
Conversely, vehicle-to-grid systems that allow cars to share excess battery charge to a household or the energy grid, is a coming thing.
The BYD Atto 3 Essential’s name implies that it’s a ‘stripped’ version of a more expensive model with various features deleted to achieve the price.
That’s true, nominally, but the reality is much more attractive.
The Essential loses items such as a sunroof, power tailgate, heated front seats and wireless phone charger and gets a reduced infotainment touchscreen and smaller alloy wheels.
But it still features Apple/Android phone integration, navigation, electric adjustment for the driver’s seat, keyless entry and starting, surround camera, adaptive cruise control, LED headlights and a full suite of electronic safety aids.
For $30K, they’re all things my 15-year-old Mercedes doesn’t have.
In 2025 ‘essentials’ clearly have a different meaning, but the Chinese formula is the same as it was for the inbound Japanese and Korean cars in past generations – tantalising value for money to buy a way into your home garage.
I stand by previous advice that there is no reason to avoid buying a battery-electric car if it suits your intended use.
Car owner's concerns about range, long-term battery life or unintended fires have effectively been disproved.
But if you commute to Uluru, they’re not for you . . . yet.
A
Steeped in history, India offers a rare juxtaposition of traditional and modern cultures.
WE RECENTLY TOOK A TRIP to India, which bemused many of our friends.
“India? Why are you going there?” was the most common response to news of our holiday plans.
It’s easy to see the reasons for this.
Many of us have little knowledge of the history of India before British colonisation.
Despite fantasising about Indian jungles as children through the eyes of Rudyard Kipling, most of our preconceptions about the country are grounded in the huge disparity between rich and poor seen through movies and history, the caste system of this highly populated country and its foreignness to us.
Perhaps, for some, our only connection to India is through cricket.
Travel, which derives from the French word ‘travail’ meaning ‘work’ or ‘trouble’, can be uncomfortable at times, chaotic and frightening but it can also be amazing.
Like a pilot who must learn to fly in an aeroplane, rather than just reading a manual, we are highly motivated to experience India for ourselves.
We are driven forward by the world’s most enduring symbol of undying love – the Taj Mahal, a fascination with Indian food and culture and an eagerness to learn and understand more about this exotic land and its people.
Rather than a full immersion experience, though, we choose to take a tour with a company we often travel with, Macleay Valley Travel (MVT).
Founded in 1988, this Australian company specialises in value-for-money itineraries.
They conduct about 90 journeys a year throughout the world, with at least 60 per cent of their new clients finding the business through recommendations.
Like most MVT tours, we are accompanied by an Australian host and joined by local expert guides.
In a group of 27, we travel by bus and air (with experiences in rickshaws, tuktuks and jeeps).
We stay in well-known hotel chains such as Hilton and Radisson, as well as historic buildings dating from British colonial times and a fort situated on a mountaintop.
Landing in Delhi, we are confronted with a different India to the one I had imagined.
Unlike Kipling’s lush jungle, trees wear winter coats of dust on their leaves and many streets are piled high with rubbish.
Machines water the sky in a vain attempt to minimise pollution, but with over thirty million people in the city, pollution seems an insurmountable problem.
It’s an assault to the senses in every way.>>
Celebrate the heart and soul of Italian cuisine, from field to fork, with Tauck. Sip wine in a world-renowned vineyard, craft authentic dishes with a professional chef, and indulge in Michelin-starred dining. On select departures, meet Frances Mayes, renowned author of Under the Tuscan Sun, in her beloved Cortona. Dive deeper into Italy’s gastronomic soul with a hands-on cooking class, learning how to prepare regional specialties. For a touch of indulgence, journey into the Umbrian countryside for a truffle-hunting adventure, capped with a truffle-infused meal in a medieval castle. A Week in Tuscany & Umbria is more than a foodie’s dream - it’s a love letter to Italy’s culinary heritage, where every experience tells a story.
While poverty and the caste system, albeit not as it used to be, is an outrage to Westerners, the architecture is stunning, providing a conduit for us to learn more about India’s amazing history.
Delhi, the nation’s capital, is full of buildings from British colonial times, many now used as government offices.
We take a rickshaw ride through bustling markets in Old Delhi, and visit a crowded oriental bazaar as well as mausoleums, memorials and temples.
Throughout the Golden Triangle of New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, a tapestry of old and new interweaves the colours of the past into present life.
It’s here that we are introduced to the role of the Moghuls in the formation of an Indian empire.
From 1526 until 1803 when the British took control, Moghuls ruled India, leaving a legacy of beautiful palaces, forts and mosques.
Stunning in both their conception and architecture, these historical treasures stand in stark contrast to the daily life.
Agra, the heart of the Mughal empire, is the site of the stunning Taj Mahal.
It was built by Shah Jahan in 1560 in memory of his Queen Mumtaz Mahal, to enshrine her mortal remains.
This masterpiece was completed by 20,000 craftsmen from Persia, Turkey, France and Italy and took 17 years to build.
Deposed by his ruthless son in 1658, Shah Jahan spent the last eight years of his life imprisoned in Agra Fort overlooking the Taj Mahal.
Travelling by bus, we stop at Bishangarh to visit the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri, built in 1569.
Once the Moghul capital, the city was abandoned due to lack of water.
Nearby, our accommodation for the night is Alila Fort Beshangarh, previously an outpost for the royal warriors of Jaipur, situated high on a single granite peak.
After nine years of restoration, in 2017 the fort opened as a luxury hotel, encapsulating 234 years of history.
That evening, we dine on the roof of the fort, drawn back to ancient times by chefs slow-cooking food over an open fire and in hot sand pits to enhance flavour and spice.
In Jaipur, the pink city, we visit the Amer Fort Palace, one of the most architecturally stunning complexes seen on our trip.
This extensive complex contains halls for public and private audiences, private chambers so that the queens could watch court proceedings without being seen.
My favourite room is the Hall of Mirrors, with light refracted from thousands of tiny mirrors covering each wall.
Temples, palaces, cenotaphs and forts meld together with home and craft house visits as we travel through Rajasthan before flying to Mumbai, the bustling city once known as Bombay.
Now the financial capital of India, Mumbai is also the home of Bollywood - India's thriving movie industry.
Yet Mumbai, too, exemplifies the enigma of India.
Below a skyline of skyscrapers, a suburb of slums sits isolated along the edge of a highway.
Age old customs, such as the tiffin lunch delivery service and an open-air laundry exist side by side with modern traditions.
By the end of the trip, our senses have been assaulted with the contradictions of this fascinating land.
We have witnessed a huge disparity between rich and poor, young and old.
We have made new friends, enjoyed different food, listened to opinions that varied from our own and had a reality check on how we live.
To me, this is what travel is about: to touch humanity in another culture so that we can learn about ourselves, for better or for worse.

WORDS RHONDA OXNAM
REGULAR READERS OF THIS MAGAZINE know how much I love ticking things off my travel bucket list.
And something that has been on there for a while now is taking a trip on one of the ‘Queens’ – Cunard’s fleet of majestic cruise ships named after previous monarchs.
With the office closed for a couple of weeks over the summer … and Queen Elizabeth in Australia for her last visit before undergoing a refit in 2025 … the stars aligned for Derek and I to join her in Sydney for a 5-night return voyage to Hobart.
It also gave us a chance to play tourist in the Harbour City for a couple of days, catching up with family and friends and spending a tranquil afternoon at the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Darling Harbour.
As our boarding time got closer, my level of anticipation also increased … I had heard so much about this ship and her refined elegance, I was slightly concerned she would be too ‘posh’ for me.
I needn’t have worried.
From the moment we stepped on board we felt right at home.
Yes, she is beautiful and regal and all the adjectives you would associate with a queen of any stature … but she was also warm and welcoming and comfortable. >>
After dropping our bags in our spacious, perfectly appointed verandah suite and taking care of the obligatory safety briefing, Derek and I went exploring.
What we found was a ship steeped in tradition and grandeur with stunning public spaces, quiet nooks to escape your fellow passengers and enough activities to entertain travellers of all ages and interests.
While I was in awe of the majestic Grand Lobby, my favourite space would have to be the library.
With its endless timber shelving, spiral staircase and old-world charm, I felt like I had stepped into the pages of a Harry Potter novel.
As our scheduled departure approached, we made our way to the upper deck to enjoy the spectacle.
I know it is somewhat of a cliché but sailing out of Sydney has got to be one of the most breathtaking experiences you could ever have.
With the sails of the Opera House glowing under the setting sun and the Harbour Bridge looming high in the background, the two of
us settled in for what was promising to be a very enjoyable few days at sea.
As you would expect on the Cunard line, dining onboard was exceptional; the service was impeccable and the entertainment throughout the entire journey was first-class.
A standout was the daily Afternoon Tea offering in the Queens Room, when what felt like hundreds of white gloved crew members marched through the doors in formation to deliver delicious s andwiches, scones and petite fours to each table while live classical music played softly in the background … so special and so Cunard.
The ‘Black & White’ gala evening was the perfect excuse to dress to the nines and mingle with our fellow guests, while the a ction in the Royal Court Theatre kept us well entertained with performances ranging from cabaret to comedy, including a special appearance by The City of Hobart Highland Pipe Band.
We were also lucky enough to have two opportunities to listen to champion speed
skater Steven Bradbury OAM as he shared his journey to Olympic gold.
Recounted with his trade mark humility, grace, and self-deprecating humour, it really is a remarkable story.
Of course the journalist in me couldn’t resist asking a couple of questions from the floor and I was both fascinated and humbled by his perseverance and commitment … as he says it took 14 years of hard work to become an overnight success.
The only stop on this trip was in the Tasmanian capital of Hobart.
We have been to this beautiful destination several times but had never visited the nearby Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
With the weather Gods shining on us, we decided this would be our first stop of the day.
It was lovely to soak up the sun and wander through the serene green space for a couple of hours.
We then entered ‘tourist mode’ to take the Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour through the rest of the city before reboarding the ship.
The following morning we awoke surrounded by the stunning scenery of Great Oyster Bay.
Again, we had visited this area before but the soaring cliffs and unique rock formations take on a whole new dimension when viewed from the breathtaking height of a cruise ship.
Expert commentary and the sighting of some local wildlife, including a family of seals, added to the experience and the hours flew by before it was time to head out through the Shouten’s Passage bound for home.
The return journey passed in a haze of delicious food, great company and the utmost comfort.
All too soon we were sailing back into Sydney harbour, ready to disembark and reflect on what can only be described as a memorable encounter with cruising royalty.

BORN IN FONTAINEBLEAU, France, Alexis Quaretti began showing a particular interest in cooking from an early age when helping his grandmother in the kitchen.
By the age of 16, he had developed his passion for food to such a level that he knew he had found his vocation.
A graduate of the hotel school in Reunion Island, Alex started his career at the 1-Michelin-star Château de Marçay in Chinon, France, a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux Association.
In 2001, Chef Alex then joined Alain Passard at the famous 3-Michelin-star restaurant L’Arpège.
It was there where he not only discovered but also refined his knowledge and appreciation for vegetable-based cuisine.
Thereafter, Chef Alex left for Vienna, near Lyon, to join Patrick Henriroux and his team at the 2-Michelin-star restaurant La Pyramide.
The year 2003 kickstarted Alex’s global career in London, where he worked with an internationally renowned chef at a Mediterranean restaurant.
He came on board the Oceania Cruises team in 2004, and in 2008 he was promoted to Executive Chef at the young age of 27.
In 2010, Chef Alex joined an Asian mogul to travel and cook between Saint-Tropez and
Hong Kong before rejoining Oceania Cruises in 2012 as Executive Chef.
Two years later, Chef Alex was promoted to Senior Executive Chef, overseeing a brigade of 140 chefs on board.
In 2017, Chef Alex once again pursued an opportunity to spread his culinary wings and expand his career knowledge and creativity.
He returned to Oceania Cruises as the line’s Director of Culinary Programs & Development in 2022, before being appointed to the role of Executive Culinary Director alongside Eric Barale in 2024.
Chef Alex oversees all aspects of culinary operations across the brand’s seven acclaimed ships and 12 restaurants and dining outlets, including the development, introduction, and implementation of new concepts to continually elevate the most awarded dining experiences at sea.
From the earliest days of his interest in cooking, his culinary philosophy and passion have been driven by his love and respect for a true ‘Cuisine du Marche’, where one respects nature, and with that, the changing seasons, ensuring the freshest and most flavourful ingredients are sourced and respectfully prepared.
It’s this very same philosophy that has driven Oceania Cruises’ mantra for culinary
excellence that is The Finest Cuisine at Sea® and drew Chef Alex back to lead one of the finest teams of culinary professionals in the world.
During his leisure time, Chef Alex enjoys cooking for friends and family and making use of his ‘show kitchen’ at home.
He also enjoys trail running, which he says, is a great way to relieve some of the daily pressure and get to see different landscapes while pushing his limits in nature.
Oceania Cruise’s superb gourmet restaurants serve delectable dishes created à la minute and offer a remarkable array of choices, from Continental cuisine to authentic Italian to classic steakhouse fare.
Every restaurant on board is complimentary and features open seating so you may dine wherever and whenever suits your taste and schedule.
Enjoy dinner for two or a gathering with newfound friends, knowing that the experience is certain to be extraordinary.

What do you enjoy about travelling?
The discovery of new places, new experiences, meeting new people … even revisiting some of my favourite places.
What has been your most memorable travel experience?
That’s a hard question as I have more than one memorable experience. Sailing into New York and seeing the Statue of Liberty was quite emotional. Staying in a cottage in a small village in Devon and taking walks along the coast. When the snow fell in Oberammergau while I was there.
Is there a particular place on your bucket list?
Still plenty on my bucket list however I do have a desire to cruise the St. Lawrence River in Canada.
Window or aisle seat?
Happy to take the window and settle in for the journey however long or short.
Car, coach, train, plane or ship?
The mode of transport really doesn’t bother me as long as it is suitable to the itinerary.
My preference would be train for land and ship for sea and waterways.
What is your favourite landmark?
I recently had the privilege of seeing the Taj Mahal … it’s quite breathtaking when the building comes into view. It was commissioned in 1631 by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal; it also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan himself. However, it was hideously expensive to build … today’s equivalent of around $5 million.
Is there one piece of travel advice you can share?
Have travel insurance for peace of mind and refer to Smart Traveller for up-to-date information.
What is the most interesting/exotic dish you have tasted?
I am probably not the best person to ask being a vegetarian and not too adventurous with exotic foods.
I have always enjoyed the fresh herbs, vegetables and spices of Vietnam and I love Middle Eastern foods.
What is the one destination that everyone should see in their lifetime?
Everyone’s desires are different … whether it be enjoying our beautiful backyard in Australia or visiting the stunning Norwegian Fjords in summer or winter, there are just so many choices.
I was born in England and, personally, never tire of the lovely English countryside.
How has technology changed the way we travel today?
All travel documents can be on one’s phone or email; Google maps helps with directions; and there are so many information sites one can access wherever they are in the world.
Can you name your favourite hotel?
I have been privileged to stay at some lovely hotels in my travels, however, the one that stands out is ‘The Shard’ in London.
It was a large room including the bathroom ‘with a view’.
As night fell, the full moon lit up the London skyline … it was spectacular and memorable.
Where have you just returned from and where to next?
I’ve just returned from Norfolk Island, a lovely, laidback island with stunning landscapes. It was peaceful retreat to relax and rejuvenate.
My next trip is to Portugal and Paris (I still never tire of the city and am looking forward to seeing the renovated Notre Dame).
This time I get to experience cruising the Douro River – exciting.

A year of change ahead as the property market rebalances.
WORDS NICK NICOLS
AFTER YEARS OF solid price gains and unbridled rental growth, the property market is finally showing signs of change in 2025 with a potential return to more balanced conditions.
According to the CoreLogic Home Value Index, national property prices fell in December, the first negative growth recorded in almost two years by the index which edged 0.1 per cent lower month-on-month after a flat November.
More recent data revealed another flat performance nationally in January, despite Brisbane and Perth continuing to post gains.
However, CoreLogic does concede that even in the hottest markets there has been ‘a clear and steady loss of momentum’, especially in detached housing where value growth has eased most noticeably.
The general price weakness noted by CoreLogic has been backed up by the PropTrack Home Price Index which fell for a second month in a row in January, also by a modest 0.1 per cent.
However, amid the softer prices, which PropTrack says were led in January by Hobart (-0.5 per cent), Melbourne (-0.3 per cent) and Sydney (-0.2 per cent), rental price growth has also started to ease.
While that’s good news for buyers and renters, the macro perspective is still showing some signs of upwards price pressure as the market remains plagued by lagging housing supply.
Through its National Housing Accord initiative, the federal government has an ambitious plan for the construction industry to deliver 1.2 million new homes over five years from mid-2024, but that target is currently falling short.
CoreLogic’s head of research Eliza Owen is forecasting new home approvals will continue
to remain low, as only 169,000 new dwellings were approved for the year to November –down 24 per cent on the 10-year average and 30 per cent below the National Housing Accord's average annual target of 240,000 new homes a year.
Even if there are reductions to the cash rate by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) this year, Ms Owen is still forecasting lower value growth and lower sales volumes in 2025 compared with last year.
“As we step into 2025, the economic landscape is shifting,” says Ms Owen.
“Pandemic-driven trends like high inflation and overseas migration are easing. The RBA cash rate might finally drop, with lending policies playing a role in how this impacts the market.
“Unemployment is set to rise, but those with secure jobs will enjoy higher real incomes.
“Residential construction is in transition –workloads are high, but new projects are slowing.
“The industry should brace for the possibility that rate reductions may have little effect on home values and transaction activity this year.”
Adding to the change in sentiment is the easing of rental price growth, with this trend partly attributed to lower immigration levels.
According to Megan Lieu, economic analyst at REA Group's PropTrack, softening demand in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane has been a key factor in the easing of rental growth as immigration continues to fall from the peak reached in late 2023.
Net overseas migration hit 556,000 in the year to September 2023, but the annualised total fell to 446,000 by June last year.
“The population growth rate has been trending downwards since September 2023 while shared
accommodation has increased in popularity due to steep cost of rents,” says Ms Lieu.
“First-home-buyer loans have also been increasing, reflecting a possible shift from renting to buying in that cohort.
“These factors have likely contributed to a lower level of demand relative to the past few years.”
At this stage, Melbourne is the market that has tilted the most in favour of renters with PropTrack noting that tenants are negotiating up to $120 below the advertised weekly price for properties.
Sydney and Brisbane, on the other hand, are seeing a trend where properties are being leased at less than the asking price with the researcher noting that Brisbane’s typical rents were 13 per cent lower than the advertised rates.
Ms Lieu sees this trend as a positive for the market.
“Despite new rental listings in the latter half of 2024 being 11 per cent lower than the 10-year average (up until 2022), there was a 6 per cent increase in properties coming onto the market compared with the same period in 2023,” says Ms Lieu.
“This, coupled with lower demand for rentals relative to recent years, has contributed to the moderation in rent prices and improved conditions for renters searching for a new home.
“Their growing confidence will not only increase their willingness to negotiate prices but may also lead to continued growth in rental turnover rates, which has the potential to further boost property listings.
“If these conditions persist, we’re likely to see a shift toward a more balanced market with slower rent price increases over time.”
Total Sales in January 2025 $27,525,000

Esperance resident gifts luxury cruise to the daughter who helped her move into retirement community.
A GOLD COAST WOMAN has received the perfect belated Christmas present – a luxury 14-day cruise courtesy of her mum and the retirement community she helped her move into last year.
Joyce McKenzie moved to Esperance Hope Island in early 2024 after her daughter Karen McKenzie recommended the Reside Communities village as an ideal new home for her mother.
Now Joyce has repaid the love after winning a luxury Silversea cruise to Tasmania and New Zealand, opting to let Karen and her partner Geoff Thew set sail in her place.
The $25,000 prize draw was introduced as part of Reside’s welcome program for new residents purchasing a home in one of its five southeast Queensland retirement communities in 2024.
“I was so surprised when mum called to say she had won a cruise from Reside and asked if Geoff and I would like to go in her place,” Karen said.
“We love cruising and have never been on this route before so are really looking forward to the voyage.”
Reside Communities CEO Glen Brown said he was delighted to see the prize, which was arranged by Sanctuary Cove-based travel
agency, Cove Travel, going to the daughter of an Esperance resident.
“Family members like Karen play a hugely important role in the decision to move into retirement living and remain heavily involved in their parents’ lives through regular visits and ongoing support,” Glen said.
“So it’s fantastic that this involvement has been recognised with Joyce gifting this cruise from Reside to her daughter – we couldn’t be happier for her.”
The McKenzie family members have lived in Hope Island for the past 25 years so the opportunity for Joyce to stay in the area when moving to retirement living was too good to pass up.
“I was 100 per cent involved in mum’s move, scoping out the community, speaking to the Reside team and taking mum to see the apartments,” Karen said.
“Esperance was the perfect solution with its location just five minutes from me and things like the onsite café and hairdresser, and Hope Island Marketplace just across the road,” she said.
“It is still in the area mum loves with highquality apartments and the advantage of security, low maintenance, nice gardens, like-minded
people and being close to everything she already knows.
“There are good people on her floor who always ask about her and would be there to help if she ever needed it.
“She can also just go downstairs or over the road for a coffee and a chat.
“We didn’t look at anything else as we didn’t think there could be anything comparable in terms of the standards and safety of Esperance.
“After we took mum for a look around, we pretty much signed up the next day.”
Esperance is an award-winning resort-style community with a vibrant social calendar and a lifestyle concierge to look after the day-to-day needs of residents.
The property features an exclusive waterfront boulevard and a host of five-star resident amenities, including a health club with indoor therapy-focused pool, yoga and Pilates studio, gym, cinema, library and private dining room with a caterer’s kitchen and wine storage.
The community’s second stage, Essence, was completed in 2024 and provides a range of architecturally designed one, two and three bedroom apartments and penthouses, with prices currently starting from $835,000 for a two bedroom apartment.

You’ll notice a shift of focus so be prepared to refresh financial and personal goals. The lunar eclipse on March 14 will spotlight a collaboration and, for some, work matters. You’ll gain the chance to leave aspects of your past behind that you no longer value. For some Pisces, there will be a degree of frustration, so be sure to take breaks and pace yourself where needed.
Apr
Financial and personal decisions will be a focus in March. Ensure you base decisions on facts, not nostalgia. Try to get key matters formalised before March 15 to avoid later delays. The eclipse on March 29 will kickstart a fresh personal chapter for March Aries, and a fresh work or health schedule for April Aries. Your home life and creativity will take your focus in April.
The eclipses on March 14 and 29 will spotlight your career and direction in March. You may experience strong emotions about how to proceed, and if you can get agreements formalised before mid-March, you’ll avoid lingering delays in April. Your social and personal life could thrive in autumn, and fresh circles may appeal. Be careful with communications until at least April 8.
Mercury will turn retrograde on March 15, so to make life easier, try to get key negotiations and financial arrangements sorted out or at least on the table by then. Your energy levels could improve but you must avoid distractions and critical overanalysis. Your long-term domestic and career direction will benefit from fresh initiative, helping you to improve finances.

Mars continues to provide you with the energy you need to succeed in your career and love life. This is a highly romantic month. If some other aspects of life remain frustrating, consider ways to lessen stress as this is a good time to improve your wellbeing. The autumn is also good for negotiations, travel and adventure – so take the initiative but base decisions on facts.
Adventure beckons; you’ll gain the chance to step into something new in your personal life, so be prepared. The lunar eclipse on March 14 encourages you to take a new look at your finances. Be innovative, but obtain expert advice as well. Mars enters your sign on April 18, bringing an uplift in energy your way, and potentially even an ideal development, so be positive.
It’s a month of new beginnings. For most Virgos, these will bring a fresh perspective in your personal life, especially early to mid-March. The lunar eclipse on the 14th may even bring fresh workrelated developments. This autumn will be a good time to revitalise your health routine as your efforts are likely to succeed; the full moon on April 13 spotlights how best to do so.
Consider which aspects of your work and health you’re ready to leave behind, as the solar eclipse on the March 29 could facilitate the process as you gain the chance to improve both your work and health. You may be busy this autumn, so find ways to be practical and realistic to avoid frustration. April brings a romantic phase, but you must avoid seeing someone idealistically.
Be sure to prioritise those you love as you may otherwise be tempted to overindulge and lose focus as a fresh daily schedule or arrangement kicks in for many Scorpios in March. The new moon on April 28 will bring a fresh chapter in a key personal or business relationship. Single Scorpios will enjoy socialising, and couples find ways to deepen their relationship.
Your career and finances could progress this autumn, but you must avoid being idealistic in both areas. So avoid gambling and, if you’re forging fresh contracts and new agreements, strive to get these formulated before March 14 as this will avoid subsequent delays. Domestic matters will benefit from clear focus and you may as a result enjoy a memorable upturn early in April.
23 Dec – 20 Jan
Ask yourself which activities and goals provide you with most sense of purpose and direction. You can make great progress both at home and at work now, so be sure to aim for your goals. You’ll be drawn to new horizons, so engage a sense of a fresh direction and avoid simply making changes for the sake of them. You may be drawn to a new circle as you broaden your horizons.
Be creative: March is a good time to bring more harmony into your domestic and personal life, as your efforts will succeed. The adventurous will be drawn to travel, study and broadening horizons. Financial or business matters will produce a turning point, so think clearly and get ideas on the table by mid-March. Be patient with delays, as you’ll see progress by end of April.

“Kollosche took home more REB awards than any other independent agency in the country.”
In February, the Reserve Bank delivered some welcome relief to borrowers, reducing the cash rate by 0.25 percentage points. This move, highly anticipated throughout January with a 95 per cent probability, has already positively impacted the luxury market in 2025, leading to stronger sales results across the board.
The first rate decrease since November 2020, the adjustment has reassured borrowers that the cycle of rising rates has come to an end, which in turn has swiftly boosted market confidence and activity.
Consequently, market supply is also tightening as those previously burdened by cost-of-living pressures are likely to opt to retain their properties. Buyers who had been awaiting distressed sales are recognising that the market is likely to strengthen due to these constrained supply levels forcing them to shift to a positive sentiment and adding urgency to their purchasing decisions.
At the prestige end, many affluent buyers are still willing to pay premiums for desirable properties that are becoming increasingly harder to acquire.
Since January, Kollosche has successfully completed several high-end transactions. Notable sales include a beachfront property at 17 Hedges Avenue for $16,750,000; a riverfront property at
297-299 Monaco Street for $15,510,000; a Mermaid Beach apartment for $18,500,000; and most recently, a riverfront home at 8 Southern Cross Drive on Cronin Island in Surfers Paradise, which sold at auction for $18,500,000.
At Kollosche, collaboration, innovation, and care are at the heart of everything we do, driving us to deliver exemplary client and community service that set us apart.
It was an honour to have this recognised at the recent Real Estate Business industry awards, where we took home four awards – more than any other agency in the country. While I am incredibly proud of this achievement for the brand, true gratitude belongs to our entire team whose collective dedication, expertise, and commitment continue to shape our success and leadership in the industry.
Rural serenity and refined living converge at ‘Amara’, an enchanting acreage estate within the emerging ‘Tally Springs’ community.
The brand-new home is the latest in a collection of magnificent projects by SR Property Group.
It is the highest-calibre home delivered by the boutique property developer to date and its on-trend architecture and bespoke features are attracting high-level interest from local and interstate buyers.
With a focus on natural materials such as timber and stone, the elegant interior features custom archways and curved ceiling voids.
Banks of glazing line the walls, inviting natural light and scenic bushland views into every room.
Set against a leafy backdrop, the rear yard is a private haven for leisure and entertainment, elevated by a magnesium swimming pool, sunken firepit and swathes of lush lawn.
Designed for a family seeking a tree-change, the residence offers one of the first opportunities to buy into an emerging luxury estate.
‘Amara’ at 20 Tally Springs Drive, Tallebudgera, will be auctioned on-site through sales agents Brad Coyne and Taylor Kleinberg on 14 March at 2pm.
“Congratulations to all our winners and those who were nominated. These awards are a reflection of the dedication, innovation, and six-star level of service that Kollosche is committed to delivering to its clients and the wider community.”
The luxury agency emerged as a leader in the industry at the recent REB Awards.
WORDS: LISA HUGHES
Kollosche claimed four well-deserved wins at this year’s REB Awards - the only agency to do so - cementing its standing as a leader in the luxury real estate market.
For 13 years the REB Awards have been a benchmark for excellence within the Australian real estate industry.
They provide deserved recognition of the businesses and professionals, who have excelled at driving the real estate industry forward in the past financial year.
This year’s winners were announced at a glamorous black-tie event held at The Star in Sydney, with several Kollosche agents and staff in attendance.
No other independent agency from across the country could match Kollosche’s four wins, which were spread across vastly different categories.
This highlights the depth of expertise, innovation, collaboration and development that exists within the business, particularly around marketing, the nuturing of young talent, and the dedication to upholding a social and community conscience.
Managing Director Michael Kollosche’s exceptional leadership and mentoring skills have long been recognised within the industry alongside his ability to achieve exceptional sales results.
“I am extremely humbled but immensely proud of the team and our agency’s achievements,” Michael said on the announcement of the awards.
“Winning the Social and Community Service Program of the Year award is particularly rewarding because giving back to the community has always been a fundamental pillar of our business. Last
year our efforts led to more than $3 million being redistributed to those in need.
“Our overall success is built on a foundation of market expertise and collaboration and I am grateful to all our sales agents and support staff, who have collectively helped to carve Kollosche out as not only a market leader in real estate but a champion of worthy causes.”
With a track record of achieving premium results across high-end residential, new project and commercial sales, and property management, Kollosche continues to set the standard for luxury real estate on the Gold Coast.
The recent award wins further reinforce Kollosche’s position at the forefront of the industry and reinforce its reputation for being a trusted agency of choice for buyers and sellers.

A pool has long been a symbol of the great Australian lifestyle, but designs have evolved far beyond a simple concrete rectangle.
WORDS: JANELLE ESTREICH
In the mid-20th century, pools were rare, mainly found in affluent suburbs, and designed primarily for functionality.
The 1970s and 1980s saw the rise of fibreglass and freeform pools, incorporating curves, rock features and tropical landscaping to create a more natural, resort-style setting.
Fast forward to today and pools have become more than just a place to cool off – they’re a statement piece. From sleek infinity edges to compact plunge pools for urban living, modern designs blend effortlessly with outdoor entertaining areas, making the pool a visual and social focal point.
Meanwhile, innovations in filtration and water treatment have made swimming cleaner, healthier, and more ecofriendly. Mineral-based systems offer benefits like muscle relaxation, while ozone purification, and energy-efficient heating make pools more sustainable.
On the Gold Coast, a pool not only provides relief from the heat but is a centrepiece for summer entertaining. With 20 per cent of Queensland homes featuring a pool – the highest rate in the country – the right pool isn’t just for lifestyle appeal, it adds real value.

A chance job working for a global real estate company led Moana Cooper to discover a passion for new projects that has lasted her entire career.
Sales agent Moana Cooper has built a highly successful career in the real estate industry.
With more than 20 years’ of experience and a genuine passion for the new projects space, Moana has become a valued member of the Kollosche New Projects team.
Moana’s foray into real estate happened almost by chance in the early 2000s. The property market was booming, and Moana was looking for a change from a role in marketing.
She landed a job as a sales associate with property giant Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) and was positioned on one of its new developments in Kent Street in Sydney.
“Kent Street is an exclusive address in Sydney with stunning views of the Harbour Bridge, attracting a sophisticated, high-end clientele,” Moana says.
While she only remained with JLL for a short stint, Moana knew new projects was to become her passion.
WORDS: LISA HUGHES
Returning to the Gold Coast, where she grew up, Moana set about obtaining her real estate license and really kickstarted her career in property.
During this time she has worked with some of the most well-known brands on the Gold Coast, including Sunland, Breakfree, and Peppers and Mantra (now part of AccorHotels), which all had links to new projects.
Although a natural people person, managing large-scale residential and hotel projects allowed Moana to gain valuable experience in customer relations and client management — a skillset that now sets her apart in the field.
Aside from taking a short three-year career break, where she went to live in Dubai, Moana has always worked towards fulfilling her passion of being in new project sales.
Moana joined Kollosche in 2019 as Executive Assistant to Michael Kollosche, where her professional manner and organisational skills led her to progress swiftly in the business.
She joined the New Projects division in 2023 and is now a key player in helping clients navigate the process of buying off-the-plan, making sure everything runs smoothly from purchase to handing over the keys.
“I love selling a lifestyle and a dream,” Moana says. “These stunning, high-end luxury projects are going to be brought to life, and I really enjoy being a part of the story-telling behind that journey.
“New project sales is about so much more than just selling an apartment — it’s about helping people imagine the life they’ll enjoy once they move in.”
Moana’s career has now come full circle, with her selling luxury beachfront developments. She ensures buyers are investing in properties that are not only beautiful but built for the future.
“Today’s luxury developments are redefining apartment living, setting a new benchmark with premium amenities, and wellness-focused offerings. It’s rewarding to be part of a team dedicated to helping people find their dream homes.”

Spirits were high at the 2025 Burleigh Swim Run, an event promoting physical exercise, surf safety and family connection within the local community.
There was a huge turnout on the day with men, women and children putting their bodies to the test across three events, as family, friends and strangers cheered them on.
Kollosche was proud to be a naming sponsor this year, contributing $10,000 from its Community Fund to ensure a safe and entertaining morning for all who attended.
In a show of further support on the day, six Kollosche staff members spanning the sales, property management and marketing divisions took on The Challenge – a test of endurance which saw teams of two compete in a 400m beach swim and 4km run.
Burleigh Swim Run is an event close to Kollosche’s heart. Event founder, Ty Dowker, is the brother of Kollosche
lead agent Troy Dowker, who participated in the team challenge with his son.
An avid surfer and beach-lover, Troy is passionate about the importance of water safety for the Gold Coast Community.
He consistently supports the Currumbin Surf Life Saving Club in collaboration with the Community Fund and championed the sponsorship of the Burleigh Swim Run this year.
Established in 2021, the Community Fund serves as a platform through which Kollosche agents can give back to the communities in which they live and work. A percentage of every sale is given to the fund, where it is redistributed across deserving charities, individuals and causes - such as this event.
This marked the 14th year of the Burleigh Swim Run, and with the community support displayed, 2026 is set to be bigger and better.

The Gold Coast property market has been geared towards buyers, but there are things sellers can do to maximise their sales results.
WORDS: LISA HUGHES
The Gold Coast property market continues to pivot, with more recent conditions tipped to favour buyers.
This may change in future after the Reserve Bank made the decision last month to lower rates for the first time since 2020. The drop of 0.25 percentage points may seem minor, but if the cash rate continues its downward trajectory, the market could look very different come next year.
For now, buyers are stilll in the drivers seat and continue to be discerning when searching for a new home.
Their key focus is firmly on value, quality, and potential capital growth. Properties with spacious living areas, appealing outdoor spaces, energy-efficienct features and high-quality amenities are proving the most desirable.
This trend is across all sectors, especially new apartment projects and bespoke houses where developers are
in competition over the level and type of lifestyle amenities on offer within their developments.
A simple pool and gym are no longer enough to attract buyers. Despite this, there are several things sellers can do to pivot to meet buyer expectations and
position themselves more favourably in the market.
Providing a good case study is 3 Costa Court in Broadbeach Waters, sold by agents Nicky and Jason Cunningham. Nicky says bidding was spirited for the three-bedroom, partially renovated
but excellently presented home, which sold above vendor expectation at $2,001,000.
Nicky says: “The owners did a lot of things that helped to boost its appeal, such as stripping it back to create the illusion of space across what was quite a small floor plan.
“The pool area had real wow-factor, with inviting sunbeds and cool drinks on hand at the wet bar helping to paint a picture of the lifestyle. It was these things that helped boost their sale price on auction day.”
Nicky also recommends sellers have their properties styled and staged.
“Staging can add tens of thousands of dollars to your sale price and is well worth the investment,” she says. “It makes makes your home more appealing to a wider buyer audience. Plus, stylists are up to date with the latest design trends, so they know how to create an aspirational setting.”
Buyers are drawn to properties that enhance lifestyle, so transform outdoor entertaining areas, pools, and alfresco spaces to emulate a relaxed, coastal vibe.
First impressions count. A well-kept entrance, fresh landscaping, and a newly painted exterior can significantly boost the perceived value of your home.
Make minor repairs and ensure everything is in good working order. If necessary, update kitchens and bathrooms, which are often dealbreakers for buyers. Properties that buyers can walk into and start enjoying the lifestyle are more appealing.
Professional staging is crucial in marketing your home. It allows buyers to gain a feel for the space without any clutter and helps them to imagine themselves living there.
Buyers today are busy and may look more favourable on a property where the owners appear more flexible or accommodating in regards to inspection times.
Work closely with your agent to set a competitive price. Being realistic about market conditions and maintaining a clear pricing structure from the outset will generate more interest and lead to a stronger final sales result.
Resist the temptation to turn to friends or family for guidance on marketing and price as they may not have the expertise to advise you correctly. Instead, choose a respected and experienced agent, whom you trust, and heed their advice. They will provide you with honest market feedback to help you make an informed decision.

Plans are underway to stimulate development in Southport, but is a clampdown on land banking the solution to reviving the city’s central business district?
WORDS: JANELLE ESTREICH
For those visiting the Gold Coast for the first time, there appears to be something missing. It can take a while to put your finger on it, but unlike Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane, Australia’s largest non-capital city does not have a defined city centre.
Once poised to be the beating business heart of the Gold Coast, Southport’s transformation into a thriving urban hub has stalled. Despite its prime location, extensive infrastructure, and streamlined planning processes, the pace of development has been slower than anticipated, with many sites remaining undeveloped despite having approvals in place.
Land banking – where developers gain approval for a project but never move ahead with it – has become a key
issue in Southport. In a bid to stimulate development, Gold Coast City Council recently proposed a ‘use it or lose it’ approach, meaning developers who fail to break ground on their projects will lose their approvals.
“Land banking is blocking the growth and rejuvenation of Southport,” says Kollosche Commercial lead agent Adam Grbcic. One of the key challenges, he explains, is that existing commercial buildings are often viewed as interim solutions, with their highest and best use tied to future redevelopment.
“This makes landlords hesitant to invest heavily in upgrades, particularly when their long-term goal is redevelopment,” Adam explains. “At the same time, many leases contain a 6-12 month demolition clause, which attracts lower-quality
tenants who are less inclined to invest in fit-outs, ultimately impacting the area’s vibrancy.”
Under the current system, approvals for developments expire after five years, but can be renewed indefinitely.
The new proposal being considered by council would see an unused approval expire after three years, with no option for renewal, forcing projects to be resubmitted at substantial cost.
In the 12 years since Southport was granted Priority Development Area (PDA) status by the state government, billions of dollars in development have been approved but not progressed. The council’s proposed changes will form part of a revised masterplan, expected to be unveiled in the first half of the year and implemented by 2026.
“The city can create a thriving precinct that benefits both investors and the wider community.”
While the policy aims to accelerate development, Adam believes it fails to address the core issue preventing projects from moving forward.
“It does nothing to combat the key point of resistance stopping projects from commencing, and that is financial viability,” Adam says. “Southport is positioned in a lower socio-economic area, meaning new residential projects would need to be priced at entry to mid-level price points. However, in the current construction climate, the cost to build exceeds what the units would realise upon completion. As a result, many sites are sitting idle, waiting for the market to improve and construction costs to stabilise.
“The most meaningful impact I see this policy having is reducing council
workload and streamlining DA approvals, as fewer applications will be left inactive due to the three-year expiry.”
Instead of penalties, Adam suggests that a more effective approach would involve targeted incentives that bridge financial gaps and support development feasibility.
“Reducing infrastructure charges, offering construction grants, or supporting specific development types like build-to-rent or affordable housing could make a real difference,” Adam suggests.
“Southport needs a mix of affordable housing, projects that attract young professionals, and student accommodation. With the right policy
mix and market conditions, the city can create a thriving precinct that benefits both investors and the wider community.”
