Improve Your Energy Levels: Bounce Back With These Simple Tips Most people complain of fatigue and cognitive dysfunction (-sometimes called foggy thinking) at one time or another. It’s one of the main complaints seen by GPs in the UK. This is because they are frequently symptoms of many different problems, ranging from something as simple as stress to something more complex, such as diabetes. However, regardless of the reasons for the issues, there are a few things that you can do to boost your energy somewhat. 1. Work out if there’s an underlying health condition. As we stated above, it can often be a symptom of ill health, so the first thing that you will need to do is rule out conditions commonly associated with fatigue. These include, diabetes, heart problems, thyroid disorders, IIH (see your optician for this diagnosis), anaemia, etc. You can ask for a full checkup and blood work from your GP. They might be reluctant to do this, but keep pushing them until they agree.

2. Increase your activity levels. Humans work like a rechargeable battery; we need to expend energy in order to create more energy. This means, the more you move around, the more energy you will have. However, don’t overdo it. You only need to do about 20 minutes of exercise a day, and it doesn’t have to be vigorous, as 20-minute walk is sufficient. As you begin to improve your energy and fitness levels, you can make these 20 minutes more intense, but you don’t have to extend the work out beyond 20 minutes. It’s about working out smarter, not working out harder. 3. Practice mindfulness mediation. One of the leading causes of fatigue is stress. Mindfulness meditation is an incredibly successful tool for reducing stress levels. There is definitive evidence that mindfulness changes the structure of the brain, and makes people more able to cope with life. You can browse YouTube for introductory lessons, read books or buy an app like GetSomeHeadspace. It doesn’t matter how you learn it, just that you do it. People are often surprised to learn that it changes brain structures because the old wives tale goes

that ‘you can’t teach old dogs new tricks’, but actually there is plasticity in the brain and it continues to change until the day we die – no matter how old we become. One way to increase energy levels is to retrain the brain to feel more positive. 4. Take a probiotic supplement. Sometimes, taking a probiotic supplement, such as acidophilus capsules can boost our energy massively. This is because our own probiotics (i.e. the body’s friendly bacteria) might be struggling to keep up with demands; this can affect our immune systems and make us feel sluggish. Acidophilus capsules help to repopulate the body’s natural fauna, and consequently, boost immunity, meaning our bodies have to work less hard, thereby freeing up energy for the stuff we love to do.
