Permanently Planted
By Elana Boses
SunFlower School has a permanent home in the old Gulfport Presbyterian Church.
SunFlower School’s relationship and strength-based, child-centered, inclusive, hands-on education has endeared the school to Gulfportians as a community of learners for more than 50 years.
A half century ago, Eckerd College students who believed in a different educational model created the private school. Co-Directors Bevin O’Brien and Nicole Riveros currently run the school. The school is considered a project-based, nature-infused,
and whole-child design education.
For more than 40 years, the kindergarten through fifth grade school resided within the Gulfport Presbyterian Church at 5313 27th Ave. S.
In April 2022, the 75-year-old church decided to close its doors. The school and church staff worked harmoniously together for decades. It was clear the legacy they built together had deep roots. O’Brien attended SunFlower as a child. She and Riveros are first and foremost educa-
tors who stepped up together to run the school as directors. Although the real estate world was a foreign one, they embarked on a new mission to buy the church building as a permanent home for their school.

WinWay
Please point out to Gulfport property owners and The Gabber Newspaper readers that they may be unknowingly selling their houses to WinWay when they sign a contract to sell. Even if they’re offered a reasonable price they might actually get a better offer if they sell directly to an actual home buyer!
Most real estate contracts have in the first paragraph or so of the sale and purchase agreement the lines identifying “the seller(s)... and the
buyer(s)... and or assigns, as buyer.”
The last few words are usually printed in much smaller type and/ or placed in parentheses and can be checked or crossed out!!
I know from personal experience that WinWay paid someone else more than $13,000 to enter into contract on one of my properties and then, on the morning of the closing, assign it over to WinWay. I couldn’t legally get out of the contract at that point. I would never have considered selling to him, but I didn’t think to cross out the “or assigns” clause when I entered the

contract. I could have sold it to anyone else and had $13,000 more in my pocket.
Gulfport is still an extremely desirable location for purchasing homes. People from all over love Gulfport like it is and are willing to invest with market prices as they are, they will still sign a contract that does not have a “or assigns” clause in it. Read the fine print, check out the buyers, and keep our town’s diverse character (and trees) alive.

The Future of Gulfport’s History
Gulfport Historical Society Asks the City for Help
By Lisa Leveroni The
Future of the Historical Society
The Gulfport Historical Society has asked the City of Gulfport for help. At the July 18 Council meeting, the City agreed. City Manager Jim O’Reilly asked the Council if the City would consider taking over the operations of the History Museum and Arts Center. He suggested that they do this under the guidance of the library system. This would, he said, ensure that both history and arts initiatives continued.
“The Historical Society and Arts Center just have not been able to generate the volunteer resources that they have had in the past,” O’Reilly said. He then introduced the President of the Gulfport Historical Society Center, Cathy Salustri Loper. (Full disclosure: Loper and her husband own this newspaper.)
“In the early 1980s, the first board of directors of the Gulfport Historical Society published a book called, Our Story of Gulfport, Florida (it’s out of print now and we’re reprinting it). If you were to go back to the 1980s and see when it [The Historical Society] was open, it was only open two hours on a weekday,” Loper said.
The History of Gulfport
“When I joined the board 10 years ago, the chief concern was volunteers,” Loper said. “We had some money. Apparently, someone left us a house at some point that we can only assume was sold and we must have received the profits, because our name wasn’t on any house.
“We’d been using that [money] ... and the board of directors had decided ... we would make the investment in an operations manager. Things went wonderfully. We didn’t really have to worry about the museum being open. But we were running out of money, so we had to stop that. We had to cut the hours back to five hours a week,” she continued,
at which point the operations manager resigned. At that point, “we did go to the city manager and say, ‘we want you to know that this is changing’.”
The museum currently has no operating hours.
The Role of the Library
City Manager O’Reilly explained that the History Museum and Arts Center would come under the umbrella of Gulfport Public Library. The Gulfport Historical Society will continue to operate programs at both venues.
“It would be run as a direct lineage of the library, but we would also try to bring in a professional curator. It’s a ‘Friends of the Library’ situation,” he said.
“We’re hoping this is a way that we can continue to support the history, culture, and arts of the city with City support [by] keeping the buildings open,” Loper explained. “We have ab-
solute support from a community that is amazing, but this amazing community all has other commitments and jobs.”
O’Reilly then asked if the Council would be amenable to the city “ingesting” the historical society.
“I am asking council consensus,” he said.
Vice Mayor Ray said, “We agree to ingesting it” to laughter.
History, Arts, and Culture are Alive and Well in Gulfport
“The board of directors of the Historical Society will continue its commitment to doing porch parties and art showings,” Loper said.
Gulfport City Council agreed to take the Historical Society and Art Center under its wing.
“Thank you. It is a really big deal for the city to take both arts and history under your purview. We really appreciate it,” Loper said.

Snowbird Turned Local Meet (Former) Gulfportian Ken Simmons
By Ethan Perelstein
If you visited or lived in Gulfport circa 2021, it’s possible you passed by Ken Simmons standing outside the Gulfport Welcome Center on Beach Boulevard.
He may have looked a bit like Bernie Sanders, but much too tan and much too barefoot — not atypical for a Gulfportian. An Army man, Ken stand as straight as his polio-recovered body allows.
“Are you local?” he’d ask.
“Am I loco?” you might have responded, as many did, losing the last consonant to his bright, nasal accent.
After enough repetitions of this, Ken changed his opening line to “Are you a visitor?” Ken knew what there was to know about Gulfport, and was excited to share what a great place it is with others.
Two Decades of Memories
Ken first came to Gulfport as a snowbird with his wife in 2000. They enjoyed the Tuesday market and
First Friday art walk. They liked it enough to escape harsh Cleveland winters here for the next 20 years.
“The feeling of Gulfport has not changed in my view over that time. It’s always maintained that openness and friendly, accepting nature,” he said.
Ken’s wife, a psychologist who specialized in helping people through gender transition, saw Gulfport as a sanctuary. So did Ken, and they also appreciated Gulfport’s open, accepting nature.
His wife passed away from cancer in November 2020. Ken moved to Gulfport that Thanksgiving.
“Gulfport helped me through a very difficult time coming out of a relationship where my wife and I were soulmates,” Ken said. “I was coming to a community where you know nobody, and you’re going through the loss of somebody significant. It was kind of comforting to walk down the Tuesday Morning Market or the First Friday market knowing that we had walked past these same vendors together.”
After arriving in Gulfport and buying a shower curtain and a pump for his inflatable mattress, Ken was set and ready to give back. Within days, he started volunteering at the Gulfport Welcome Center and the Gulfport Historical Society. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and other local organizations.
“Having opportunities to use my skills and abilities in a way that would not only help them, but also help me through the process of developing a new life and overcoming grief,” made the difference, he said.
Welcome to Gulfport
Ken said his favorite memories in Gulfport are from his time volunteering at the Gulfport Welcome Center.
During his time there, due to what Ken calls “extremely bad” signage, volunteers often spent time waiting for people couldn’t find the center. In response, Ken kicked off his shoes and stood out on the deck. There, he welcomed and educated Gulfportians and visitors alike.
After living in Gulfport for one year, Ken moved to Westminster Shores. The Shores, a South St. Pete continuous care community, offered many benefits. However, it meant leaving behind many memories, good and bad, in Gulfport.
“It’s been difficult for me to come back [to Gulfport],” he said. “I’ve been coming back more often lately because I’ve been trying to overcome that because it’s an artificial barrier.”
After a few months away, Ken started coming back to Gulfport. To his surprise, people commented on his absence.
“It felt great because, who am I to be remembered?” he said. “I think we all minimize ourselves, especially when we’ve been going through a grieving process, and then to have someone say, ‘Where’ve you been? we’re so happy to have you back!”
“That really reinforces what I’d experienced in Gulfport all along,” he added. “Even though I had been away for a while, It’s still there, kind of welcoming me home.”

The parcel holds two buildings. The smaller building faces 54th Avenue and houses Creative Play Preschool. SunFlower uses the main building, which faces 27th Avenue South.
Creative Play Preschool Director Susan “Kya” Belcher leased the smaller space on the property for 14 years to house what she calls a “farm school.” Students ages 3-7 play and work in the gardens, gather from fruit trees, and feed chickens and rabbits.
Creative Play hoped to purchase the property as well.
Ultimately, the Presbytery of Tampa Bay, the Dunedin-based umbrella for Tampa Bay-area Presbyterian churches, chose to sell the property to SunFlower. SunFlower renewed Creative Play’s lease.
Belcher declined to comment for this article.
YEARS EXPERIENCE
A Special Thanks
“There were so many key players in making this dream become a reality. Countless people behind the scenes fundraised, made calls, and donated their money, time and expertise,” O’Brien explained. “We would like to give a special thanks to David Ottinger (SunFlower alumni dad and grandpa) who tirelessly supported us as our legal representative throughout these lengthy and complicated 16 months.”
“We received an incredible outpouring of support from the moment we started the SunFlower School House Campaign,” said Riveros.
The School House Campaign relied on legacy families and local partners to raise more than $500,000 in cash.
“We are grateful to Waterfall Bank, especially Andy Williams, who believed in SunFlower School when other banks hesitated,” said O’Brien.
When asked about future plans for the site, O’Brien said they want to preserve the history of the location.
“We are really excited to have more space and be able to beautify the school’s property, while preserving some of the style and the
historical value of the Gulfport Presbyterian Church,” said O’Brien.
O’Brien credited Alyssa Marie Dunlap from the Happy Mural Project for painting a sunflower mural on the south side of the building.
“We are also having a local sign painter paint new signs that keep the historical feel of the previous signs, @sunsigns.stpete,” O’Brien said. “We plan to re-dream and design the green areas of the property and the courtyard.”
Safe Haven
“The SunFlower School is a safe haven for so many families.” Riveros said, “We are really grateful for the high interest in our school. We have a unique setting that is built largely on relationship building. As of now, we are mostly full and have a running waitlist for the 2023-2024 school year.”
“We are excited to continue the unique, rich educational experience we have been providing for over 50 years, while growing our community and adding permanent features to our new/old home. We are thrilled to stay in Gulfport and develop more of a bridge with the community,” O’Brien said.

Gulfport Council Notes
Actions Taken at the July 18 meeting
By Lisa Leveroni
Here’s what happened at the July 18 Gulfport City Council meeting.
Editor’s Note: For the July 18 Gulfport City Council meeting and the Aug. 8 meeting, The Gabber Newspaper’s beaches reporter will cover Gulfport Council. Her reaction to Gulfport’s city council meeting — as opposed to the ones along the beaches — reinforced the difference between Gulfport and many other Pinellas governments.
Going to a Gulfport City Council meeting is stepping out your front door on a perfect sunshiny day. Everyone is smiling and greeting each other. Everyone knows and likes their neighbor. There are no arguments or anger; no negative discussions or disagreements; only cooperation, pleasant conversation and getting things done. Cue the Tinkerbells.
OK, maybe it’s not that much of a fairy tale, but if you go to a Council meeting in Gulfport, the time may seem to fly by with positive communication and a productive community attitude.
City Infrastructure First
The July 18 meeting began with a presentation on the utility rate sufficiency study. Andrew Burnham, vice president of Stantec Consultant Services, produced documentation of Gulfport’s water and sewer usage, along with rate projections through 2028. While last year, there was no rate increase, Burnham projected “a structurally balanced budget” and an
8% increase in rates this year and in subsequent years. Usage remained stable.
Jacob Sanderson presented a Citywide Sidewalk Inventory. This covered the conditions of sidewalks throughout Gulfport, including ADA compliance, ramps, and “stress points” or areas of non-compliance due for repair. He presented visually, using Google Maps.
Overheard at Gulfport City Council: Boca Ciega Yacht Club Lease
At a point in the proceedings, the imminent resolution of lease issues
between Boca Ciega Yacht Club and the City of Gulfport was addressed by Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson. He said, “Aren’t we supposed to fight about it for nine or 10 months before it happens?” The room broke into gales of laughter.
Gulfport People Speak Out
Public comment saw participation from many residents. Karen Love thanked city council members for a variety of accomplishments. These included code enforcement and short-term rentals converted to long term, the fire department social worker, a cleaning station and life ring on the pier, the “conservative budget,” sidewalks and much more.
Jeri Reed and Melisssa Helmbold (of the Gulfport Merchant’s Chamber) talked about the 49th Street Neighborhood Building and the referral meeting for businesses working together with the GMC. Tommy Bixler from the Lions Club Foundation complimented the City on the 4th of July parade and bringing veterans together. Also, the Lions Club will take part in Feeding Tampa Bay, Thursday, July 27 from 4-6 p.m. in a food drive. Margarete Tober also gave kudos to Gulfport for July 4 and to the technology group for the city passing ordinances from the last meeting.

Putting Residents First
Madeira Beach Residents Invited to Speak First
By Lisa Leveroni
In an effort toward “solidarity for citizens of Madeira Beach,” Mayor Jim Rostek opened the most recent meeting of the Board of Commissioners (BOC) by announcing a new procedure. This procedure would begin by announcing the next topic on the agenda and then inviting the residents to speak first.
“Our residents need to feel heard,” Rostek said. “If we hear what the people have to say first, then we can better understand their concerns and address the issues important to them.”
This was how the meeting started on July 12 in Madeira Beach City Hall.
First, there was a brief discussion about dredging John’s Pass around the bridge area. City Manager Robin
Gomez introduced Aptim Environmental & Infrastructure, Inc. representative, Nicole Sharpe. She talked about the John’s Pass project being in the permitting phase and the various issues surrounding dredging this waterway.
Communication is Key
Next, citizen and Civil Service Committee member, Jerry Cantrell, spoke of his long-awaited communication with interim City Attorney Thomas Trask. Cantrell reported he had been waiting since May to hear from the attorney for legal advice on an issue that arose in the Civil Service Committee.
Cantrell called it a “lack of com-
munication between the (interim) city attorney and me.”
He also stated that communication needs to flow freely between the Civil Service Committee and the interim city attorney, “even if it is just to say no… failure to respond to an email is not an acceptable form of communication.”
Rehashing the Vote — the People Have Spoken
The commission also discussed the letter intended for the Florida attorney general, written by interim City Attorney Trask. The letter was to ask for Attorney General Ashley Moody’s guidance regarding the City’s vote on the March 14 ballot

question. In the letter, the City asked what they should do about the vote. This would determine whether or not the City hires a part-time consultant or contractor versus a fulltime finance director.
The language on the ballot read as follows: “This charter amendment would amend Section 5.5 of the charter to provide the Board of Commissioners with the option to delegate to a contractor or firm to perform the services of the Director of Finance and City Treasurer. Should the charter be amended?”
Voters voted Yes-427, No-537. (Charter Amendment Confusion, The Gabber Newspaper, April 13)
The BOC took the “no” vote to signify that residents of Madeira Beach were in favor of having a full-time Director of Finance and City Treasurer. To date, this has not happened.
Both the interim city attorney and director of finance are contractors.
“I believe this issue is being drug [dragged] out for some reason,” Rostek said. City Manager Gomez then asked the participants to “stick to the agenda.”
More Resident Input
Resident Tom Edwards asked what was happening with public use of the City gym. The city manager reported commission would discuss this issue in the “meeting two weeks from now.”
Next on the agenda was increasing the City budget for 2023. Finance consultant Andrew Laflin spoke to the increase in budget. He cited additional costs for the seafood festival and Polaris replacement.
Commission voted 5-0 in favor of increasing the budget.
An Interim Attorney of Two Years?
The City recently sent out an RFQ (Request for Quote) to find a fulltime city attorney. The mayor said, “the RFQ for city attorney appears to be an epic fail.” He explained that getting only two responses to the RFQ resulted from the city manager posting the job on only two websites.
One of the two respondents to the RFQ was the current interim city attorney, Thomas Trask. Recognizing that the City was operating with an interim city attorney for nearly two years, resident Jerry Mathis asked, “how long should this take?”
It was then that two of the commissioners on the dais referred to some residents as “bullies.”
Commissioner Anne-Marie Brooks said, “we posted [the RFQ] on two websites and only two responded. I am not surprised, the way they [the ‘bullies’] harass the attorney we have here … Mr. Trask has done his job.”
Commissioners Call Residents “Bullies”
“Based on the emails we have received from the bullies in this town, I am not surprised that there are many other attorney’s firms that do not want to work here,” Brooks continued.
“Do you think we should be calling our residents bullies? Can we tone that down a little?” Rostek asked.
“No. No. I believe they’re bullies; I do … I wanted us to be nice to each other,” said Brooks.
Toward the end of the meeting, McGeehen agreed with Brooks’ characterization of some residents as bullies.
“We see you,” he said. “We want to keep the negativity out of city hall.”
The Mayor’s Final Word
“I’m going to say one thing as mayor and have the final word. I am going to apologize for the disparaging comments of one of our commissioners from the last two meetings. Now we have a person calling our residents ‘bullies’? I humbly apologize for that. It’s not going to happen again. If it does; I will ask the commissioner to exit the dais. I will not tolerate that any more. Combined with … our residents also have to remain respectful and they’re entitled to their opinions… they’re our residents… they’re not bullies… I humbly apologize.”

Chewing Chiggers Chiggers and Things That Go Bump in the Woods
By Jon Kile
If you’re reading this, you’re probably in Florida and already understand that there are people who don’t attract mosquitoes and those who could get bit by a mosquito while walking on the moon. Mosquitoes have never really bothered me; their bites don’t leave a mark and they don’t itch. Our teenage son
is equally blessed, likely a product of superior hygiene. My wife and daughter, on the other hand, are composed of whatever combination of blood types, pheromones, body lotions and just plain prettiness that mosquitoes love.
My wife doesn’t even bother with things like citronella, bug zappers,
or those little bracelets because she says, “If there’s just one mosquito left, it’ll still find me.” Save your homemade natural homeopathic remedies, Gulfport. The only thing she trusts is DEET. Skin So Soft? Beat it, Avon Lady.
On a recent camping trip, my wife went so far as to have me spray her head with Deep Woods Off before going on a hike. I usually put a “spritz” on my ankles, like a sort of cologne, but on this particular day, I was wearing hiking boots and socks. I was well covered. So I thought.
I didn’t consider other pests.
A few years back, we took a nice hike through the remnants of a Civilian Conservation Corp camp in the Smokies in which I was the only one in the family who didn’t end up with chigger bites. I was not, however, spared the endless complaining from the rest of the crew, who decided CCC stood for Chiggers Chew-

ing Crotches. Summer 2023, karma struck back in Warm Springs, Georgia, where we hiked Franklin D. Roosevelt’s property, where he hoped the minerals would have healing properties. I now believe that FDR’s inability to walk was caused, not by polio, but because he was undoubtedly ravaged by chiggers. (“The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself, and chiggers.”)
What, Exactly, Is a Chigger?
For the uninitiated, chiggers are microscopic red bugs that emerged from the valleys and hollers of Appalachia that were flooded by the TVA. They’re still angry about The New Deal. And they don’t just bite. They crawl into the dark regions under your socks and other clothing until they find a place to settle in for a snack; ankles, armpits, unmentionable places. The victim feels nothing until a couple of days later when the skin turns angry and itchy. Did I say itchy? I wanted to cut my legs off at the shins. Chiggers had burrowed into my socks and had a feast where I’m not sure DEET would have helped. Within two days my ankles looked like something horrible you only see when you Google “smallpox.”
The rest of my family had chigger bites too, but they seemed practically unbothered. I’m normally stoic to life’s discomforts. Not this time. I fantasized about all the bristly brushes and sandpapery things I could scour my skin with. In my quest for relief, I found (but did not order) “Chiggerex,” a remedy endorsed by the illustrious Coyote Peterson, a nutty YouTuber who is famous for intentionally letting deadly insects bite him. If only FDR could have benefitted from this important scientific breakthrough instead of that silly Manhattan Project.
Time is the best healer. I can only write about this now, because the wounds have faded, the itch is gone, and I maintained sanity. FDR spent his final days at Warm Springs, suffering a stroke at his desk and dying a few hours later, finally free from the anguish of chigger bites.

Geck-nical Difficulties Gecko Queen Voting Changes
By Elana Boses
Gulfport gets excited to crown a Gecko Queen every year. This year, the “inauguration” happens at the Gecko Ball Aug. 26 at the Gulfport Casino. On the tradition’s 10th anniversary, the Gulfport Merchants Chamber changed its process for Gecko Queen voting. This year, instead of a committee choosing Gecko Queen, the GMC announced it would allow the public to vote.
Melissa Helmbold, the GMC president, invited the community to start voting on July 22 at visitgulfportflorida.com. The voting webpage went live at 10 a.m.; by noon, the GMC removed the page. The following message replaced it: “Due to the poll software malfunction, we will be removing the digital poll from the website and launching an in person polling place the week of July 24, 2023. We thank you for your excitement and support of this iconic event.”
“We were inundated with votes coming in; the website kept crashing. Votes were coming in from all over the world so fast,” Kelly Wright,
GMC chairperson (a volunteer leadership position), explained.
After attempting to alleviate the technical problems, the GMC board remained concerned that people not connected to Gulfport would vote.
Gecko Queen: Voting Local
“We made the decision to keep the voting local,” Wright said.
“We broke the internet!” Sarah Laracuente, the chamber’s vice chair whose company, Sail Marketing, gets paid to handle the marketing for the GMC, told The Gabber Newspaper
By Monday (July 24), the team had four ballot boxes and ballots in the works. They told The Gabber Newspaper they would place the boxes in various Gulfport locations. According to Laracuente, each ballot cast must include the voter’s name and email address; the GMC will only allow one vote per email address.
People can vote for Gecko Queen in person between now and Aug. 14 at Gulfport Beach Bazaar (3115 Beach Blvd. S.), Stella’s Sundries (2908A, Beach Blvd. S.), Studio 49 (2309 49th. St. S.), and The North End Taphouse (2908 1/2 Beach Blvd. S.). Per the GMC website, online votes will count.

Car in Bay Linked to Crime Driver Charged With Attempted Murder
By Mike Sunnucks
A St. Petersburg man drove a car into Boca Ciega Bay in Gulfport July 24 after allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend with a tire iron and trying to run her over with his car.
Antron Laquay Smith, 40, “hit his domestic partner, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, with a tire iron several times” in the parking lot of the Palm Aire Motel on U.S. 19 (34th Street North) near 32nd Avenue North at approximately 12:38 a.m. July 24, St. Petersburg police wrote in a statement.
“She broke away and ran across the street. He jumped in their car, a blue Toyota Scion, and drove in the victim’s direction. She got out of the way, but he hit a parked pickup truck and fled the scene,” the statement continued.
SPPD dispatched officers to a home near 12th Avenue South and 42nd Street South in the Childs
Smith
Park area, where Smith threatened to harm or kill himself with a knife.
“Officers negotiated with him and were able to take him into custody,” SPPD said.
St. Pete police said Smith faces attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon as
well as a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a crash, and other charges.
Car in Boca Ciega Bay
Police said he also drove and abandoned the 2016 Scion into Boca Ciega Bay in Gulfport.
Gulfport police officers arrived at the Gulfport Beach area near Shore Boulevard and 57th Street South. There they found a car well into the waters of Boca Ciega Bay.
Woodman said the car was approximately 40 feet into the water off the beach.
“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that this vehicle was involved in investigations that the St. Petersburg Police Department were working,” Gulfport Police Department Sergeant Thomas Woodman told The Gabber Newspaper .
“Gulfport’s involvement in this case was the removal of the vehicle from the water/beach front,” Woodman said.

Taverna On the Bay
Taverna On the Bay schedules to open in the popular spot across from the Tradewinds Island Resort on St. Pete Beach.
It is the former home of Caddy’s and if you’re old enough to remember, Silas Dent’s.
Even though Taverna On the Bay fronts on Gulf Boulevard, it backs on Boca Ciega Bay, hence the name.
It features Mediterranean specialties, hinting at Greek dishes, and of course, seafood.
While in the same plaza as Beach Zone and Sunshine City Comedy Club, keep an eye out for this new restaurant opening soon.

Shaner’s New Owners
For nearly 30 years, Shaner’s Land & Sea Market served the folks from Pass-a-Grille and St. Pete Beach. They were especially proud to be there during the pandemic when their service was the most valuable.
This combination of a butcher shop, seafood market, and carry-out store now operates with new owners. While you still may see the previous owners Michael and Mike Shaner around, Nasa Chami and her husband are the owners now.
Her plans to carry the store in similar ways to Shaner’s. However, the plan includes adding new items to the business.
“The store will be going through renovation to accommodate new areas like a bakery and coffee bar, craft beer, and more,” she said.
Chami compared the new store concept to Mazzaro’s. They will have deli sandwiches, pizza, mediterranean specialties, homemade hummus, and more regional delicacies.
The hours will expand to 8 a.m.11 p.m. This will allow room for more pick-up and delivery orders.

La Gringa Takes the Stage
American Stage’s First Bilingual Production
By Brian Shea
As I walked into American Stage downtown St. Pete, I was struck in awe by the wondrous set created by scene designer Rodrigo Escalante.
Escalante created scenes for the theater’s production of Carmen Riviera’s OBIE award-winning play, La Gringa
I experienced two worlds entangled together in that theater. The beautiful, tropical jungle and mountain sides of Puerto Rico surround the living spaces of the extended family of the main protagonist, Maria.
This environment is the visual representation of a theme in this play: the duality of life. This theme can create both harmony and conflict.
The play centers around Maria, a young woman from New York City who, on a journey to find herself, visits her extended family in Puerto Rico.
Angela Reynoso bursts onstage with vibrant energy as Maria, a woman eager to immerse herself in her extended family’s culture. Maria has an ideal image in her mind of life in Puerto Rico. Yet that ideal image clashes with the reality of her family’s life. The story that follows is both a comedy and drama of intergenerational family life.
La Gringa
La Gringa was first performed in New York City in 1996 at Reportorial Español. The company still performs this show, which makes La Gringa the longest-running Off-Broadway Spanish-language production in New York. American Stage’s production is another example of why this play is a success.
This cast works together extraordinarily well. American Stage’s La Gringa is a bilingual production; the dialogue moves back and forth at times from Spanish to English. I could understand and appreciate
every moment of this play, regardless of language — an excellent testament to the craft of the actors, the director, and the playwright. The beautiful seamless movement through dual languages, and no meaning is lost.
Cast & Crew
Tatyana-Marie Carlo’s skillful direction assembled a team of performers and designers bringing this family’s world to life.
Alina Alcántara is fierce as Norma, the protective and, at times, paranoid matriarch of the family.
Victor Souffrant plays her attentive husband, Victor, with great focus.
Germaine Lebrón plays their young farmer neighbor, Ramon Monchi, who has eyes for Maria with steadfast determination.
Pedro Bayón plays Manolo. Norma’s bedridden brother finds his spirit for life renewed during his niece Maria’s stay. Bayón plays the role of Manolo with such nuance and depth that I wanted more time with his character.
Jessy Julianna plays Norma’s job-seeking, stressed daughter, Iris. Julianna crackles with energy when she walks on stage. As one of Tampa Bay’s best young performers, Julianna always delivers outstanding work.
Shahrzad Mazaheri’s costumes accentuate each character’s story. Christina Watanabe’s lighting and Germán Martinez’s sound design sharpen the story. I recommend audiences experience this production at American Stage. It is a great story about identity, duality, and acceptance.

Authentic and Delicious Sunday Thai Market at Tampa Temple
By Morgan Banno
Thai is my absolute favorite cuisine on the planet. Thai green curry is my signature dish as a chef. In college, I backpacked around southeast Asia and fell head-over-heels in love with Thailand. I was profoundly moved by the history, culture, food, and landscape. I was ecstatic when I learned Wat Mongkolratanaram, a Thai Buddhist Temple in Tampa (known as Wat Tampa to the locals), has an open-air market with authentic Thai food every Sunday. This is an experience that I highly recommend, regardless of your obsession with Thai food.
Wat Tampa sits on the Palm River, under a shaded canopy of Spanish moss trees. Tropical orchids and flowers decorate the grounds, and the ambiance is exotic and peaceful. The setting is truly spectacular. Tables get set up under a section of covered porch where Temple members sell authentic Thai foods. There are curries, noodles, soups, and other goodies — all scratch-made.
Authentic Thai Food
Aromas of lemongrass, galangal, and coconut caught me as I snaked my way through the noodle line. With each breath, I was instantly transported back to Thailand. For $10, you can nosh on a giant bowl of soup (chicken, pork, or veggie) or Pad Thai (chicken or tofu). The elder ladies sold bowls of soup and boxes of Pad Thai to hungry visitors, while the Temple men cooked furiously in the background.
Another table had desserts, spring rolls, mango sticky rice, and curries (all $2-13). Each container of homemade curry was served with a side of steamed white rice and wrapped in a plastic bag for take away. I indulged in the green curry (spicy and herbaceous) and the Massaman curry (sweet and mild), both with chicken and both scrumptious.
All the money from the market goes back to the Temple.
Regional Curries
Food styles in Thailand vary by region. The most well known Central region has dishes like Pad Thai, green curry, and Tom Yum (hot and sour soup). The southern region is heavily influenced by Malaysian and Indonesian cuisine, churning out stewed curries like the deliciously sweet, Massaman. Myanmar and Laos heavily influence the northern and northeast region with grilled meats and contrasting textures.
Sunday Thai Market
In addition to food, the Temple’s Sunday market also sells orchids and plants. I picked up a Thai hot
pepper plant for my garden ($12) and a handmade prayer bracelet ($2) made by a child who attends the Temple school. Regular Buddhist services take place every Sunday at 1 p.m. and include chanting and meditation. If you are new to Buddhism, please read up on proper Buddhist Temple etiquette guide before attending. You’ll likely see the monks who live on the property, but be respectful and refrain from taking pictures of them.
Tips: Bring cash for the market and arrive before 9 a.m. The food sells out early.

Art Comes Alive
Imagine Museum’s Sunset Markets
By Cameron Healy
Enter a world of art and creativity at Imagine Museum’s Sunset Market every first and third Friday. Tampa Bay artists and artisans set up shop in open lots outside the museum, displaying their best work.
Art comes alive as you walk around to see vendors prop up art easels to paint, draw, and sketch throughout the night.
Art Throughout the Night
One person had a glass art demonstration. Adam Pacini, artist at Pacini Glass Gallery, heated glass, transforming its shape to become something new.
As the sun set, artist Kayla Heintz painted a scene where the sky’s colors changed from blue to pink and purple. Heintz has a UFO collection where she paints popular St. Pete attractions and adds an intergalactic spaceship to the scene.
She said the museum asked her to paint a UFO flying over the Imagine Museum during sunset. Throughout the night, she stood by her easel, painting the perfect alien scenario.
Right next to her sat artist Brian Kostar aka Kostar Kustoms. Kostar
finds inspiration from Florida alligators and nature, and pop culture references. While we talked to him, he was painting the faces of cartoon characters Rick and Morty.
He displayed tasteful prints of alligators in place of famous paintings such as the “Mona Lisa” and the “Girl With The Pearl Earring.” He also had one of a manatee with the famous Salvador Dalí mustache.
Sunset Market Vendors
Vendors and artists of all kinds abound at the Sunset Market. A handful of vendors sold accessories such as jewelry, handmade clothes, and keychains.
A lot of artists brought along prints of their best — and favorite — art.
Tampa artist Vivian Lee displayed vibrant pots for succulents and house
plants. She paints the pots, then sprays them with glaze so the paint doesn’t get damaged while in use. She had plants for sale in her booth as well.
Lee also creates custom paintings — she doesn’t only paint pots. She sells canvases, digital prints, and stickers.
Multimedia artist Elena Kamenica displayed her best sketches of landscapes and sea creatures, such seahorses and jellyfish.
As people bounce from one tent to another, Kamenica drew a simple lake scene with a black pen in her sketchbook to pass time.
Future Markets
From 5-10 p.m., you can check out all of these artists and vendors presenting their best creations. Admission to the market is free.
