The days are longer, the sun is brighter, and spring is definitely here. This is the time when I especially love living in Spain as it is not to hot and there are days on the beach with the kids, whereas back in the UK it is still grey and cold. Easter is a lovely time in Spain with the religious parades, warmer days and in Cómpeta there is the Annual Cómpeta Art walkabout. Visit Cómpeta on the weekend of 23rd and 24th and you will have a chance to view the works of various artists from the area. Collections include paintings, sculptures and photography and much more see page 32 and 33 for more information. Onto a different form of entertainment, Panto fever has hit Cómpeta. Roles have been cast but the organisers are still looking for more help see page 12 for further details. Over the last month you may have noticed billboards up in your area with the faces of the mayors and candidates up for election in May. The foreign vote has never been more important so perhaps take time to learn about the candidates and parties in your area before voting next month. Finally, a big thanks goes to our neighbour Jim who despite being busy helped us out hugely this month with computer problems, thanks Jim!

Can you guess who is who? No prizes, just for fun.
There are giant dwarfs living amongst us!
C
AMPO is back and this June we will be presenting our 2nd strictly for adults Pantomime -Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. But of course, as Director Tom Sobel warns “we will take this traditional fairy story and distort it almost beyond recognition – packing it with corny jokes, raunchy costumes, more singing and dancing and a smattering of sexual innuendo”. This 90 minute masterpiece of dramatic drivel will be full of innuendo, bad acting, over-acting and hardly-any-acting! The cast will do their utmost to massacre the wonderful and magical story of Snow White, and do for Disney what Vesuvius did for Pompeii! Producer Steve Brogan says “The casting couch has seen a lot of activity! Expect old faces (and we're not just talking about the Ugly Sisters from last year), new faces, a unique performance by Chester
Williams and give your support to 7 virgin dwarfs verging on the blooming ridiculous”. Hotel Balcon will once again host the Panto for five nights from Wednesday June 8th through Sunday June 12th. We are limiting the number of seats each night to enhance your visual and audio enjoyment. Ticketing information will follow next month so remember to pick up your copy of the Grapevine in May. Finally we are still on the lookout for volunteers, please contact Tom 689 704 378 or Steve 620 914 104 if you wish to help out. For additional information visit our website at www.panto.competaart.com Proceeds will be going to Cudeca, The Sasha Roberts Foundation and several local charities. Let the fun begin!

Weird and Wonderful from around the world!
kraine protest over NZ 'win a wife' competition prize
Ukrainian women's rights activists have held a protest over a New Zealand radio station's competition for listeners to "win" a Ukrainian wife. Nine women protested topless outside Kiev's marriage registration office, holding banners with slogans such as "Ukraine is not a brothel. The Rock FM announced the prize winner on Monday as a winemaker named Greg. The competition has caused controversy in New Zealand too, but the station said it was just "a bit of a laugh"."At the end of the day, it's up to both people if they decide to get married and return to New Zealand. We're not actually marrying anyone or bringing women back to New Zealand," Rock FM programme director, Brad King, was quoted as saying when the competition was first announced But the information about the competition on the website suggests the radio station had anticipated a reaction. "It's actually going to happen. And oh boy are there going to be some people with their panties in a twist over this one," the website entry reads. The competition winner is due to fly into the coal mining town of Donetsk on 23 March, before travelling to Zaporizhia, as part of a 12night holiday in Ukraine. As part of the prize terms and conditions, the winner chooses a woman from the Endless Love dating agency in advance. The agency then arranges the holiday to Ukraine and brings the two together. The prize also includes such things as the use of a translator and a river cruise Kenya MP Gidion Mbuvi to fight for right to wear bling! A Kenyan lawmaker thrown out of parliament for wearing ear studs and sunglasses says he will fight to change the dress regulations."I represent the youths who elected me to parliament," Gidion Mbuvi, 35, told the BBC. "This is our generation.

It is our time," said the MP who drives a Hummer car, like many US rap stars. He says MPs should be allowed to wear "extras" such as sunglasses and earrings, as long as they wear suits. He said that Kenya had been governed by old men for too long. "I'm trying to prove to the world that it is the right time for the youth to be in charge of our nation," he said.He was thrown out of parliament after other MPs decided that the way he dressed offended the dignity of the assembly. Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim said the house had never before been entered by a male lawmaker wearing earrings. But one Kenyan reminded people on the internet that the speaker wears a white wig made of horsehair - and questioned who looked more ridiculous! The world's most expensive painting ever sold at auction is going on show in the UK. The work, called Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, was painted in 1932 by Pablo Picasso and is based on his muse, Marie-Therese Walter. The painting, which was sold in New York last year for $106.5m (£65.5m), will go on display at the Tate Modern in London. Tate director Nicholas Serota: "This is an outstanding painting by Picasso. "I am delighted that through the generosity of the lender we are able to bring it to the British public for the first time."

Unique festivals in Spain for April, May and June APRIL: La Diada de Sant Jordi Otherwise known as Catalan Valentine's Day, this event is celebrated inCatalonya to honour San Jordi (the Catalan name of Saint George) and takes place on 23 April. It commemorates the death of San Jordi who was most famous for slaying a dragonto rescue a princess. Legend has it that there was a dragon in Mont blanc that killed the inhabitants of the city. In order to prevent more killings, a victim was chosen from the villagers on a daily basis. The princess was eventually picked but was saved in the nick of time by San Jordi. The dragon's blood was then transformed into a rose and it is for that men offer women a rose and women offer a book in return for the gift. Nowadays Las Ramblas in Barcelona is filled with book and rose stands where you can choose either gift. Some bookshops may also give you a rose when you purchase a book. This day is also now used by Catalans to publicly display their patriotism by hanging flags from the fasçades and eat special cakes or pastries featuring the Catalonian flag. In addition, through the day at the Plaza de San Juan groups of locals gather to dance sardanas, the dance from Catalonya. MAY: Horse fair in Jerez de la Frontera This unique festival takes place in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, and honours the city's ancient deep-rooted equestrian tradition.During the medieval ages, horse trading was traditionally celebrated with drinking sherry. The event lasts for seven days and the dates vary according tothe Holy Week. During the horse fair week, horses are displayed throughout the streets and sold as in ancient ages. The city is filled with Casetas,

restaurant-like spaces that offer food. As part of the celebrations, the Casetas compete for the best tapas. Casetas-owners promote their restaurants and bars this way and the award serves as a label for reputation for the year. It is also tradition for women to dress in a typical gitana dress and men todon their special riding horse outfit. Special considerations are that retired people are offered better prices at the Casetas and that Wednesday is women's day, which means preferential treatment on the day, discounted prices or even free drinks. The festival also involves bullfights and a designated area for a funfair at the Calle del Infierno. The event takes place a week after the famous Romería del Rocío which is an opportunity to see people dressed in the local costumes parading the newly acquired horses.
JUNE: Baby Jumping On the week of Corpus Christi at the village of Castrillo de Murcia in Sasamón, Bugos, be prepared to be astonished by this shocking festival. The Colacho, a man acting as devil’s representation, has to free newborns from all evil by jumping over them. Groups of four to six newborns are placed on mattresses every few yards as cheering mothers asked the Colacho to jump several times over their babies to ward off all evil and bless their children for lifetime. Upon the end of the ceremony, unwed women of the village will race to lift the babies off the ground and hand them back to their mothers as they believe this will help them get married within the next year. Throughout the day, you will hear children shouting at and mocking the Colacho who is running wild on the streets and hitting a terranuela, a nut-shaped object to attract attention.

Pet Behaviour
Canillas de Albaida
The dog is probably the animal that has adapted best to us and on the other hand the cat is the only animal that hasn’t adapted to us at all, we have adapted to THEM! At the clinic we very often see animals with behaviour problems, and in many cases the owners are not even aware of them having a problem. It is NOT acceptable to have a dog that scares visitors away, or that completely takes over the household. In order to live together in peace and harmony, it is extremely important that the dog is a 100 % aware of where his place is in the family group, and it ALWAYS has to be at the bottom! I often find that owners are not aware of this, and they think that they are being cruel to the dog if they don´t let it do what it wants to do. The happiest dog in the world is the dog that knows where its place is.

If we compare a family with a pack of wolves, the owner would be the leader wolf and the dog one of the puppies. In a pack, the puppies know perfectly who is in charge. To be a leader wolf implies a huge responsibility because you have to keep the pack away from dangers, find food and make sure everyone know their place so fights don´t take place. If one of the puppies suddenly had to take over, it would die of stress! Imagine our dog, in our daily life with all of us so busy, with traffic, phones, etc, to be a dog and have to take care of the whole family. It doesn’t stand a chance. Therefore it is so important that you already from day one show the puppy where it belongs. If you haven´t had a dog before, or if you´ve got yourself a quite dominant puppy, I strongly recommend that you attend puppy training, or get a specialist home to give you some advise. Too often the situation gets out of control, and we have quite a lot of euthanasias due to behavioural problems. Make sure you get help before the situation gets so far. Gunila Naturvets Competa

I
haven´t got television at home myself, but I often hear about the very popular programmes about horse and dog whisper’s. These people have a special way with animals. They meet with animals who have an extremely complicated or dangerous behaviour pattern and make them calm down and behave ”normally” so their owners can enjoy being with them. Considering how different our behaviour is from animals, it´s quite amazing that we don´t need more ”whisper’s”!

1 BLOKE, 2 WHEELS, 2 DEGREE COURSES, 1 PORTABLE UNIVERSITY & 50 CAPITAL CITIES
B
y the time you read this, my legs will be aching and my nether regions will be tender. I will recently have set off on a massive charity bike ride and I need your help. I'm attempting something I believe has never been done before: I'm planning to cycle to the capital of every one of the fifty countries in Europe over the course of three years at the same time as studying for two degrees – one in maths and another in science – with the Open University via a little laptop. If all goes well, by the end of 2013, I'll have raised loads of money for charity, cycled more than thirty thousand kilometres, visited all fifty nations of Europe and completed two degrees, and then I'll have to do what my mum always wanted me to do and get a job. The part I need your help with is the charity bit. A couple of years ago I nearly died of a high blood pressure-induced brain haemorrhage and so the first charity for which I'm hoping to raise money is The Blood Pressure Association. There's a link on my website – www.unicycle50.com – if you'd like to make a donation. Even if you don't make a donation and if you've not had it done for a while, then please get your blood pressure checked. It might save your life. But there's another charity closer to home for which I also hope to help raise funds. Nestled in the heart of Competa is a little charity shop that does great work in supporting the creatures that live in and around Competa, whether they are pets or strays. The force behind the charity shop is Nina. If you live in Competa you probably know her. The shop is the base of Nina's Spanishregistered charity, Action for Animals. She originally set up the UK branch of Action for Animals back in 1997. This still operates but its scope is wider, supporting animal rescue projects around the world. I'm a trustee of the Spanish charity although it's Nina who does all the work. I thought that it was about time I did my bit and that's why I'm on my bike. In the shop you'll find a
28

huge map of Europe showing my progress. Please pop in and help to support the ride. It's important to note that all money raised by the ride goes directly to either Action for Animals or The Blood Pressure Society. The ride is entirely self-funded, which is the reason while I'll be roughing it – camping or wild-camping – with only the occasional visit to a cheap, dodgy hotel to recharge the laptop that I need to complete my courses. On the 31st March I set out from the Isle of Man, where my parents live, and ticked off Douglas as the first capital in the process. From there I head south to London, across to the Channel Islands and then to Paris. Then it's the Low Countries, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Andorra, Spain and Portugal. The final capital of 2011 will be Gibraltar some time in October and then I'll pootle on back to Competa and have a rest for the winter. 2012 sees me tackle eastern and southern Europe including a journey right across Turkey to reach Cyprus. Finally, 2013 will take me to Hungary, Romania, all the former Soviet states and to Scandinavia. It's going to be an amazing three years. As well as the website, you can follow the ride as it happens on Facebook, with loads of photos from each country and maybe even snaps of bits of me that have gone sceptic and are in the process of dropping off. That'll be nice for you. Search for 'UniCycle50' to find the page and please click 'Like'. Thank you for your support. All donations will be massively appreciated. Steven Primrose-Smith

Lilac Vines Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.
W
isteria must be one of the most recognised and loved climbers – even non-gardeners know it – and yet, strangely, it has no common name, no loving nickname. For me, wisteria is oh so romantic with its fabulous drooping racemes of lilac flowers, swaying and dancing in the breeze. We tend not to plant it much here perhaps thinking it won't enjoy the heat or will take years to settle into flowering. That's not true here; you can often buy small plants in full flower and they'll settle down immediately - perhaps the baking heat of summer provoking this precocious flowering. Once it's found its feet, it will romp away rapidly along an old stone wall or draping its elegant self over supports. It does make a perfect pergola plant - the flowers can be viewed to perfection cascading down like bunches of pale grapes, there's good-looking foliage through all the hot months and, being deciduous, winter sunshine can enter .Wisteria sinensis, or Chinese wisteria, is the one we know best, a member of a family of ten species. Native to China and Korea, it was named by botanist Thomas Nuttall for Caspar Wistar (1761-1818) a professor of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania and it was introduced into Europe in 1816. It's reckoned to live to around 100 years old so choose your planting spot well and future generations will thank you for it. This vine can reach a huge 30m long and looks wonderful tumbling out of an old tree if you've no wall or pergola space for it. It's also glorious as a standard/mini tree and makes good ground cover too though I always feel it's rather a shame to make it grovel! I love the traditional lilac but there are also white, deep violet and pink hybrids. All are striking because they appear before the foliage. It's great to watch those flower buds forming, like thick furry swelling grubs. The flowers develop in long strings, or racemes, up to 0.5m long and scented. Then the bronzygreen foliage starts to unfurl cloaking the vine in a rich fresh greeness, that sort of vibrant spring green that makes you feel good to be alive.

In the wild it grows on forest edges climbing into trees or sprawling across disturbed ground. The seeds can float on rivers for long distances, remaining viable. Its quick growth rate has made it an exotic nuisance in various parts of the world. Plant it in good rich ground; it will grow in some shade but seems to flower better in full sun and remember that it will need heavy duty supports. Birds occasionally pick at the developing flower buds, producing poor flowering. Generally fairly pest free, you may find the odd outbreak of aphids and, rarely here, honey fungus can strike. Pruning seems to confuse many but it is a vine that is very tolerant of pruning and it can even be cut back to the ground, though flowering may then be a little delayed. If you're growing it up into a tree, it can, largely, be left to its own devices. In a more formal setting, in early summer shorten back the long whippy shoots to about 30cm. The main pruning is in late autumn. Cut back laterals by about one third of their length and side-shoots need to be cut back to 3 buds. The main leader should be pruned to 1m longer than the laterals.
hardenbergia violacea. A much deeper violet colour with a purple spot to each flower, it too bears long drooping racemes, though smaller and more delicate looking than the Chinese wisteria. The bees adore it and are busily working the flowers on any warm winter day for this vine is a winter flowerer, starting up around the end of the year and continuing until April. Our vine also seems to be a favourite of birds; we often find old nests in it during the autumn tidy up. The simple ovoid leaves are evergreen and the tumble of flowers give a lovely eye-catching splash of colour against a white wall or it will equally scramble down a rough bank. In rich soil, it can get big; if it starts to get a little overpowering, shear it down low and you'll be rewarded by lots of vigorous new growth and an even more spectacular flowering than usual. Propagation is from pre-soaked seed or try layering long shoots. These two lovely vines will flower back to back, filling early spring-like days with elegance and style. Do give them a try!
Propagation is from side shoots in early summer or by layering in springtime. Seeds can take a long time to settle into flowering and will be variable.
Lorraine Cavanagh has lived in Spain for 25 years; a mother, grandmother and hispanófila, her passions are plants, the environment, food and drink, and travelling within Spain. A landscape gardener and writer, she's always happy to give advice. Call and see her at Viveros Florena, 2km from Cómpeta down the Sayalonga Road – have a free coffee and cake in their tea-rooms.
Although a member of the pea family, this one is definitely NOT edible – the seeds, pods, bark and resin are toxic to humans and animals causing nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Her book Lorraine Cavanagh's Mediterranean Garden Plants has been nicknamed 'the bible'. The new edition at €24.90 is now generally available throughout Spain.
If you've never been, do make a visit to the Jardin Botánico La Concepción in Malaga and see their wisteria tunnel – it's absolutely glorious. Give them a ring – they'll tell you when it's looking its best. Another stunning lilac vine that we have planted at the garden centre is the Australian wisteria, or

DON'T WASTE THIS OPPORTUNITY! t may well be that your political opinions or leanings do not always agree with the prospective candidates in the forthcoming local elections, but remember the old adage that “Local Politics is all about local issues”, and try to pick the best man for the job.
I
One of my strongest wishes would be to put in place improved information and help facilities for everyone including a strengthened Foreigner's department, and already I have a multinational team of residents of Cómpeta who would be dedicated to this task.
There has been much promised in the past, but whether your first worry is the response time of the police, the dedicated medical staff at the Health Centre doing their best in overcrowded conditions, road repairs, signposting in the campo, or free Spanish courses for the children of expatriates who live in Cómpeta, we are now in 2011 and many people who made a choice four years ago have not seen their hopes realised. Now you will soon have the opportunity to choose again.
Think about the benefits of that to you! I always listen to the wishes of the residents of Cómpeta and try to act accordingly. I want everything that you want.
For many residents one of their most important desires is fair representation for everyone, no matter whom you are. It is the starting point for progressive and successful local government. My name is Raúl Martín López, I am the PSOE candidate, and I have strong views about fairness and improving the quality of life for everybody in Cómpeta.

But to get these improvements in our village you need to give your support to a team of people who will put your wishes into practice. 43% of Cómpeta residents are expatriates so if you all take this opportunity it will make a huge difference to the result of the election. Don't leave it to somebody else! If you have any questions you are welcome to email me: raulmartin2011@hotmail.com For more information: www.psoecompeta.blogspot.com Your decisions today will affect your options tomorrow. The office is open every Monday and Thursday from 10-00H to 14-00H. THE SPORTS CENTRE: The new Sports Centre was officially opened on Sunday the 27th March at 12-00H, we hope you will take the opportunity to enjoy the new facilities. THE MAYOR 'ALWAYS AT YOUR SERVICE': Cómpeta has a Mayor, José Luís Torres Gutiérrez, who is constantly working to improve the village, he is always prepared to listen to problems and his ' open door policy' provides the
opportunity for all those wishing to speak directly to him. JUNTA TO LEGALISE HOMES IN CÓMPETA: After four years of hard work trying to legalise houses in the campo the Mayor of Cómpeta, together with thirteen other mayors of Axarquia, had an important meeting on the 4th of March with Doña Josefina Cruz, Concejera de Obras Publicas y Viviendas of the Junta of Andalucía. After much uncertainty and discontent José Luís and the other mayors have finally convinced the junta to legalise the houses. A decree will be issued shortly which will outline the legal proceedings and guidelines to be followed in order to complete the legalisation process.

r Rubi had always wanted to have her own clinic. This was a dream which finally came true in January 2011. Previous to having her own clinic she worked in hospitals throughout Spain and it was during this time that she felt that she did not have enough time to talk to her patients. Talking and explaining things is something she is passionate about, possibly as a result of her mother's influence who was a fantastic school teacher before she retired . She also noted that patients who went to the radiologist to have, for example, an ultrasound or mammography were often very worried about what the result will show up and of course need to be kept informed. It appeared to Dr Rubi that other radiologists didn't explain much to their patients. Whereas she, as a matter of course, explains and talks things through clearly with her patients so they can fully understand the results and any implications. Dr Rubi was born in Madrid but has lived, studied and worked in many places such as in Spain, USA, UK and France. She became a doctor in 1998 graduating from Granada University at 23 and after training at Carlos Haya University Hospital in Malaga she became a consultant radiologist in 2003 at 28 years of age. Dr Rubi has worked in both public and private hospitals in Spain the UK and France and along with English she speaks fluent French. It was her father who taught her French when she was little because he, also a doctor, studied for several

years in France and speaks the language perfectly. In 2005 Dr Rubi registered with the General Medical Council in the UK and has been reporting MRI to British Hospitals by telemedicine since then. Working by this method was a fantastic opportunity for her to work from home and to take care of her two daughters who are now 4 and 6 years of age. Dr Rubi explained it was too difficult to have a family, work in a hospital as a doctor and have a husband also a doctor (Pediatrician)thus resulting with too many on-calls for the both of them. Experience is something Dr Rubi isn’t short of. She has worked in the UK, in the Breast Units of various hospitals. For example she worked as a Consultant radiologist in the Breast Unit at The Royal Cornwall Hospital, in Truro and in the Breast Unit of Medway Maritime Hospital, in Kent. Perhaps one of her most enjoyable experiences was when she worked in a French Hospital in the Caribe (Guadalupe Island, French Antilles). She describes it as a great experience for the whole family. She was working as a consultant radiologist at the hospital while her husband took care of the girls….and the turquoise sea, and the palm trees…So a hard day of work and swimming in the warm Caribbean sea was both relaxing and exciting at the same time!

Tourists in Seville O
ne of the downsides of running your own business is the difficulty in leaving it all behind for a few days and having a break from the routine. I think they call it a holiday. Before we came to Spain, living and working in London meant that any holiday or break we took would either be somewhere hot if it was a one or two week holiday or out of London into the country to walk or cycle. Many a Friday afternoon was spent making excuses to our employer about why we needed to leave the office early and join the rest of the lemmings on something like the M4 to south Wales to walk in the Brecon Beacons. The queue of traffic was almost endless all the way from London to our destination, like a dragon's tail out of Wales. All that to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
62
The Grapevine
Now we're in Spain the idea of a one or two week holiday is off the radar (well we do get a 3 hour siesta every day to lay by our own pool in the summer), we don't walk as much as perhaps we should with the Axarquía mountains on our doorstep so where do we go for a few nights' break away? I know, let's head for a city. Seville was our chosen destination for a break away from the 'island' that is Cómpeta. We had actually been to Seville before, in June 2005, just after we'd moved to Spain. We went with friends and seeing the sights of Seville wasn't really the main reason for going. I'm afraid to say it was to pay a visit to IKEA before we had the one in Málaga. Cultural peasantry at its highest. I'm not sure about my wife, Debbie, but this time I was keen to do the city tourist thing and wander round seeing the historical sites and taking in the

cultural feast of a city like Seville. Once we arrived and checked into our hotel (Hotel Casa 1800 – well recommended and very central) our first stop was the bus stop and the open-top bus tour. When we have visited cities in the past we always think the open top bus tour is a good way to start your visit as it gives you a good idea of the city's layout and you get a flavour of the places you want to go and visit. Yes, we're sad like that. There wasn't a cloud in the sky so it was ideal weather to sit on the top deck at the front; like a big kid on a fairground ride. But that's enough about how Debbie felt, I was just looking forward to seeing the city's sights. Having got our bearings on the tour the camera was out and the full on tourist snapping started. A few snaps of Torre del Oro, a walk along Rio Guadalquiver to the bull ring – a few more snaps – then back to the hotel for afternoon tea, and a few brandy snaps. Afternoon tea; so English yet in the middle of Andalucía's capital. After a few z's we were back out in the city and on the hunt for a decent tapas bar. We eventually found one although perhaps not the true tourists' tapas bar. It was quite contemporary but offered great value tapas and was called Duplex, should you ever go and want to visit. I'm sure it wasn't one of the bars you'd want to visit on the tapas trail but for just a few euros you got good tapas, albeit not really traditional. After all, how many traditional tapas bars serve deep fried battered chicken pieces in a poppadom. Still, it was good nose-bag, good value and just what was needed washed down with a few beers or glasses of vino tinto. After a comfortable night's sleep in our hotel and no drive to Torrox Costa for the papers, we had the whole of Andalucía Day for more sightseeing and tourist snaps. Deb couldn't wait! We started the day, not with a traditional Spanish breakfast of coffee and churros but a Starbucks coffee and muffin. Yes, we managed to mix the cultural and pagan. A mocha choca skinny frothy latte was obviously the coffee of choice. Well, you want to try and get a simple cafe con leche in those places. We then made our way to El Parque de María Luisa to see the Plaza de España and all the “Paballónes” from the Seville Expo 1929. One of the things I love about Spain is that when there's a public holiday all the Spanish dress up in their Sunday best and spend the whole day as a family. We sat in the sun for half an hour just watching
To advertise call Helen on 637 028 873
Spanish families interacting together before thinking, sod this, and hiring dual seat bike and cycling round the park trying to knock them all over. It certainly wasn't the type of cycling we did back in England, this had no gears and you sat side-by-side. Frankly, after half an hour my legs were like jelly. A gentle walk along the river Guadalquiver then lunch was beckoning. We found a nice street restaurant just off Plaza Nueva and after a belly of food and a little vino tinto it was back to the hotel for afternoon tea – again – and a snooze on the hotel roof terrace in the late afternoon sun overlooking the cathedral and Giralda. As we'd overdone the lunch thing, tapas was the order of the evening again so it was into the narrow streets of Santa Cruz area and a more traditional tapas bar, Las Teresas, with the hanging hams and your bill chalked up on the bar top where you sat. How we laughed as we moved to different seating spots along the bar and watch the barman get more annoyed as he had to rechalk our bill where we sat. Well, you have to entertain yourself in those places. The bar did have a lot of character and was festooned with pictures and press cuttings from the bar's history. It even had a board with all the ham knives attached, which had been used in the bar going back to 1984. Despite the bar's traditional atmosphere, like cultural peasants we ended up in Duplex for more deep fried chicken in poppadom. Our final morning and I was back on the cultural trail. Debbie was cultured out so I spent a few hours wandering round the Reales Alcázares and admiring the fantastic architecture and intricate wall decor. Not unlike the Alhambra Palace and its Nasrid Palaces it was a great place to wander round. Our trip came to an end but we'd had a good stay in Seville and had left enough to see for our next visit. We still have to visit Triana over the river, do the bull ring tour and probably squeeze in a BK Whopper menu with large fries and coke to go. Well you have to mix the cultural with the modern, don't you? Alick Howard

These notes were left in milk bottles for various milkmen Dear milkman:, I've just had a baby, please leave another one. Please leave an extra pint of paralysed milk. Cancel one pint after the day after today. Please don't leave any more milk. All they do is drink it. Milkman, please close the gate behind you because the birds keep pecking the tops off the milk. Milkman, please could I have a loaf but not bread today.
Please knock. My TV's broken down and I missed last night's Coronation Street. If you saw it, will you tell me what happened over a cup of tea? My daughter says she wants a milkshake. Do you do it before you deliver or do I have to shake the bottle? Please send me a form for cheap milk, for I have a baby two months old and did not know about it until a neighbour told me.
Please cancel milk. I have nothing coming into the house but two sons on the dole.
Please send me details about cheap milk as I am stagnant.
Sorry not to have paid your bill before, but my wife had a baby and I've been carrying it around in my pocket for weeks.
From now on please leave two pints every other day and one pint on the days in between, except Wednesdays and Saturdays when I don't want any milk.
Sorry about yesterday's note. I didn't mean one egg and a dozen pints, but the other way round. When you leave my milk knock on my bedroom window and wake me because I want you to give me a hand to turn the mattress.
Milk is needed for the baby. Father is unable to supply it.
My back door is open. Please put milk in 'fridge, get money out of cup in drawer and leave change on kitchen table in pence, because we want to play bingo tonight.

PETER KAY ONE LINERS
GOLF A young couple gets married, and the groom asks his bride if he can have a dresser drawer of his own that she will never open. The bride agrees. After 30 years of marriage, she notices that his drawer has been left open. She peeks inside and sees 3 golf balls and $1,000. She confronts her husband and asks for an explanation. He explains "Every time I was unfaithful to you, I put a golf ball in the drawer." She figures 3 times in 30 years isn't bad and asks "But what about the $1,000?" He replied "Whenever I got a dozen golf balls, I sold them
Dave Dawson - Canillas de Albaida FLY AWAY I bought a can of fly spray the other day. I asked the shopkeeper if it was any good for wasps. He said, “Nah, it kills them!” STING IN THE TAIL I just opened my wheelie bin and a wasp flew out. What kind of sicko would throw a wasp into a bin? ANIMAL RIGHTS What do you get if you insert human DNA into a goat? Banned from the petting zoo. GOD’S LAW A man trying to understand the nature of God asked him: “God, how long is a million years to you?” God answered: “A million years is like a minute.” Then the man asked: “God, how much is a million dollars to you?” And God replied: “A million dollars is like a penny.” Finally, the man asked: “God, could you give me a penny?” And God said, “In a minute.”
I saw a fat person wearing a sweatshirt with 'Guess' on it. I said 'Thyroid problem?’ When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bike. Then I realised that the Lord doesn't work that way, so I stole one and asked him to forgive me. I've often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can't get my wife to go swimming. I went to a restaurant that serves 'breakfast at any time'. So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance. A cement mixer collided with a prison van on the Kingston Bypass. Motorists are asked to be on the lookout for 16 hardened criminals. Well I was bullied at school, called all kinds of different names. But one day I turned to my bullies and said 'Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me', and it worked! From there on it was sticks and stones all the way. My Dad used to say 'always fight fire with fire', which is probably why he got thrown out of the fire brigade. Sex is like playing bridge: If you don't have a good partner, you better have a good hand. I saw six men kicking and punching the mother-in-law. My neighbour said 'Are you going to help?' I said 'No, six should be enough.’ If we aren't supposed to eat animals, then why are they made out of meat? I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers. I was the kid next door's imaginary friend. Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before..

ACTION FOR ANIMALS CHARITY SHOP UPDATE After six months of dust and destruction the road to the Action for Animals Charity Shop is finally, completely open! It's been a tough time for the shop during the roadworks, but thankfully the work has now been completed and Avenida de la Constitución has to be the best-looking street in the village. Many thanks to everyone who struggled through mud, potholes and general mayhem to continue supporting us.We now have spring and summer clothes in the shop, so why not pop in and see what's available? We rely on your donated goods, so if you're sorting out your wardrobes in preparation for the good weather ahead, please don't forget to bring us anything you no longer need. In March this year, Steven Primrose-Smith starts a 31,000 kilometre bike ride taking him to 50 European capitals during which he hopes to raise money for several charities, including Action for Animals. You can read about his trip elsewhere in this month's Grapevine. And finally, we now have a Facebook page (search "Action

for Animals (UK/Spain)" and please press the "like" button) where you can follow our news and keep in touch with what's happening in The Charity Shop We look forward to seeing you soon! The Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59. Opening Hours: 10am-2pm Monday to Friday 10am-1.30pm Saturday
ARTS BLOGGER STEFAN VAN DRAKE (http://stefanvandrake.blogspot .com/) of Canillas de Albaida, opens an exhibition of his acrylic and oil paintings—“Espana Rural”— at Paco's Gallery in Canillas on 26 April, running through end of May. This is his second exhibition. Van Drake, a retired award-winning journalist and public interest trial lawyer, took up painting in Competa in 2005. He is largely self-taught. Currently showing: Oil paintings by internationally known Spanish artist Jaime Adan of Madrid and Mexico: “Glimpses of the Soul.” Adan has twice exhibited in Competa at the Galeria de Hadriano in Competa. Sculptor and arts professor Moira Schepel
curates the gallery.
TO RUSSIA WITH LOVE From Cómpeta to Moscow a multicultural experience. Cómpeta resident Liudmila Federicheva has recently returned from a visit to Moscow, where she was busy promoting Cómpeta and in particular 'Guided Walks' in and around the village and the new tourist guide 'Cómpeta Yes we Can'. Liudmila has settled back to a warmer life here in Cómpeta after experiencing temperatures of minus 25 degrees in Moscow. Continuing with her studies Liudmila is taking a course: 'La Encrucijada' – 'The Crosroads' training to be a local guide in the Sierra Cómpeta on the following routes: Acequia, Gaviarra, Gavilan, Las Ventas, y Acebuchal and learning about map reading, flora and fauna, the birds and the bees etc. and visiting the Natural Park Centre in Sedella and La Resinera Centre in Fornes, Granada, and lots of other interesting places. Guided visits in and around the village are now available in 13 languages Spanish, English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. If you would like more information about any of the above please contact Tom Ferber Councillor for Tourism 636 – 821 – 930 e-mail turismo@competa.es

COMPETA RESIDENTS DAY Don José Luís Torres Gutiérrez The Mayor of Cómpeta invited all of the foreign residents of Cómpeta to 'RESIDENTS DAY' at the Museum of 'Artes y Costumbres’. The Mayor outlined the work done by the Townhall and spoke about the work they intended to do in the future.
TORROX TUNNEL SPEED TRAP The much publicized speed trap on the A-7 tunnel in Torrox is now in operation. Drivers snapped travelling at more than 100kph face fines of up to €600, and could have as many as six points taken from their driving license depending on their speed. The speed cameras measure the average speed in the tunnel, registering the vehicles’ number plates, when they enter and exit the tunnel.
SUGAR AND SPICE SPRING COLLECTION Sugar and Spice in Competa launched their spring clothes collection in March. They invited women to come and browse their shop whilst having a glass of wine and some nibbles along with a free goodie bag! The evening was a complete success and enjoyed by all... especially me!
It is the second of its kind in Spain, with another on the AP-6 in Guadarrama Madrid, and was due to start catching speeding drivers on February 1, although this was later postponed. During the trial period in January while speed limits were being changed, more than 1,800 drivers in Torrox were caught going over the speed limit. This equates to 1.8 per cent of all the vehicles controlled during that period. The Traffic Department, DGT, has sent letters to the drivers who were ‘caught’ informing them that they were speeding.
