News in Spain MÁLAGA GIRL LOSES HER FIGHT FOR LIFE A MONTH AFTER BEING HIT ON THE HEAD BY A FALLING IRON BAR. A 13 year old girl, who was admitted to the Carlos Haya Hospital on February 16 with head injuries has since died. The child was hit by an iron bar which fell on her in the street, causing her a serious head trauma. It happened when she was walking with a friend to her school in the La Princesa district of Málaga and was hit by chance by the falling iron bar which had come from a blind on a block, and fallen some 30 metres. Several people raised the alarm and the health services were on the scene quickly and she was rushed to the Carlos Haya. Her head injuries were such that an operation was needed, and after that she went into intensive care. She had been making progress, and indeed left intensive care last week, but over the past few days her condition worsened and she died on Tuesday 13th March MAYOR OF ALBOX SPENDS 23,000€ WITH THE MUNICIPAL VISA The Mayor of Albox, Almería, Socialist José García Navarro, has run up the cost of 120 meals on the municipal Visa card to a total of 23,000 € between January 2009 and September 2011. It works out at about 700 € a month. 29 of the 120 lunches were taken at the La Zaranda Restaurant in Albox where the Mayor invited above all representatives of the administrations who had visited the village. On the Visa statement there is also 1,100 € spent in a luxury hotel in Madrid. Meanwhile the same Town Hall stripped for cash, owes wages to the civil servants. PP spokesman, Esteban Carrión also notes the Mayor enjoys an Audi A6 as his official car – and pays for the petrol with the Visa. NINE HOURS TRAPPED BY HIS OWN TRACTOR A 39 year old man was rescued after spending nine hours under his overturned tractor. While working on the tractor he fell down a slope on his land in Las Viñas de Ardales, Málaga, and suffered a broken collar bone and a broken leg.
It was 9 hours later when the family called the 112 emergency number, and once he was found by health workers, firemen, the Guardia Civil and the local police were all in attendance. It was necessary to move some earth to rescue the man who was taken to the Clinico Hospital in Málaga, where he is recovering well. COURTS REJECT HELEN AND LEN PRIORS CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION AS ‘PREMATURE’. An administrative court in Almeria has rejected Helen and Len Priors claim for compensation against Vera council for the demolition of their home in 2008 as ‘premature’. The judgement was made on the basis that a definitive decision has not been made regarding the legality of the building licence issued to construct the property due to the existence of an ongoing appeal in the High Courts of Justice of Andalucía (TSJA). The guilt or innocence of Helen and Len Prior is not the subject of debate in the courts. They are the victims of a planning dispute between the regional and local governments in Andalucía and they continue to live in their former garage whilst seeking damages for the loss of their home. “Helen and Len are absolutely gutted by this latest setback” said a spokesperson for AUAN, an association of homeowners who support the Priors fight for justice. NERJA PRIEST USES AN IPAD FOR HIS SERMONS A priest in Nerja, Málaga, officiates Mass at the El Salvador church with a computer tablet, and is using Facebook to preach the gospel. 39 year old Andrés Pérez says he discovered social networking a few years ago describing them as ‘useful tools’. Ordained in 2000, he says he uses the internet to keep up to date, because that is where the people are, and therefore that is where the church has to be. He says using Facebook he can talk to people who don’t normally go to church.

The historic city centre will be the starting point for the 20 and 30 km routes which will lead the walkers from all over the world through the city, the nature and along the beach. The last day, the 14th of October, they will walk the Via Gladiolo (gladiolus being the Roman symbol for victory) back to the Avenida del Mar where they will be welcomed with loud cheers. The dates for this year are 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th of October. It will also be possible to participate in fewer days as well. New for 2012 are 30 kilometer routes and a fully automatic subscription system. Marbella 4Days Walking took place for the first time in 2011, with more than 700 walkers from several countries participating in walking 20 kilometers every day. Especially on the Sunday and Wednesday (a national holiday) many people joined for just one day. The organization of Marbella 4Days Walking has decided to make some improvements this year, there will also be walking routes of 30 kilometers and the subscription system is fully automatic. Organizer Hans Wohl: “Last year we manually entered all data ourselves, this year people who subscribe on our site will automatically receive their confirmation with a bar code which we will scan at the registration tent. That way, starting and finishing will go more quickly and we’ll have a better view of the amount of people on the routes.” For the convenience of the participants, as well as for the protection of the database, there is a login system. here are so many fabulous fruits that we can grow in Spain and market stalls are bulging with it in all shapes, sizes and colours but there are two fruit plants that we sell a lot in the garden centre that are very rarely seen to buy fresh – blueberries and cranberries. Perhaps their rarity here makes them all the more ‘to die for’ and two healthier options would be hard to find.

Blueberries (arandanos): I admit that blueberries don’t seem a very typical crop in Spain so it may surprise you to learn that Spain is the third largest producer of blueberries in the world. New varieties, many of them more heat tolerant, have greatly extended their growing areas. The two main areas of production, in Spain, are Asturias which, with its humid cooler climate seems logical, followed closely by Huelva where production has rocketed in the last 10

years. And that south west corner of Spain is not so very different to the areas where lots of us garden. If you want to have a go, make sure to get plants known as Southern Highbush which support warmer conditions and less hours of cold weather. Soil needs to be well-drained but with generous additions of organic matter to improve humidity. A PH of less than 5.5 is necessary and, for that reason, many home-gardeners in our area choose to grow their plants in large pots. If you have acid conditions in your garden, then a spacing of around 0.75m with 2m between lines is ideal for big production. Wherever you plant, ensure that you gently spread the roots before backfilling. They are plants that need little in the way of fertilisation, especially in their early years, and it is best applied sparingly during springtime. . Most of the soft fruits cause some pruning doubts. With blueberries it is important to bear in mind that old wood is less productive so prune yearly to improve cropping levels. Prune in winter, cutting out old branches and shortening back younger ones by about one third, maintaining a bushy plant with a minimum of eight main branches to the framework. An additional light pruning may be necessary after cropping. You can begin harvesting in the second year after planting increasing to a maximum production at around 6 years old. Good crops can be maintained for around 30 years, so your initial investment is well worth it! Blueberries have, of course, in recent years become very fashionable but with good reason as they are a real power house of vitamins and one of the fruits with the highest levels of antioxidants associated with prevention of heart disease, cancer and other degenerative diseases. They’re also a good-looking shrub and can be very decorative in pots. Use an acidic compost – one that is suitable for azaleas – and position your plants in the sun (a minimum of 6 hours daily), moving them to a little more shade during the summer. Their shallow, fibrous roots need regular watering, preferably with rainwater, but do not keep them sodden. Insect attack is rare – your biggest problem may be birds who love the berries too! Most varieties are partly self-fertile which means that you will get fruits from one plant but the yield will be much better if you have two or more.

Cranberries (arandanos agrios): These tangy berries are rich in vitamin C and their juice is excellent in the prevention or treatment of all types of urinary tract infections. The plants are extremely attractive, low-growing little shrublets with bronzed new foliage, delicate pale-pink spring flowers, attractive autumnal colouring and those delicious crimson berries in the winter. They thrive in damp acid soil – now I can hear you all screaming –‘ impossible’! So, how about in a large pot? They look extremely pretty draped around the edges with, perhaps, an azalea, camellia or gardenia as the centrepiece. They all like similar conditions and life on the shady side. Or, if you really want to go in for mass production, dig out a shallow hollow in the garden, line it with perforated black plastic, backfill with an acid compost and plant. Being shallow rooted, you won’t need to dig to any great depth. Pruning requirements are almost nil, just a light tidy-up after harvesting and, like blueberries, they don’t want a lot of fertiliser. Set your plants about 1m apart; you will need to have a little patience because plants won’t come into production until they are two years old. Keep the moisture and PH levels correct and you won’t have much problem. Cranberries will hold on the plant for many weeks and are also excellent frozen. They are quite prolific little plants but they do tend to tire themselves out after 5 years or so when they will need replacing. And don’t just save them for the turkey – they’re far too good for that!

A fun family day in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice
DAY FOR LIFE SUNDAY, 20th MAY 2012
T
he day will commence with the annual 5 km sponsored walk, for those who wish to participate – around the village of Competa, finishing at The Alberdini Rural Hotel, Pago la Lomilla 85, Competa, Telephone 952516294. The first sponsored walk started in 2006 with a small group of friends but has grown year on year, with 61 ¾ participating in 2011. One of the walkers Lily walked at 8 ¾ months pregnant and her ¾ is now Leyla, a bouncing 9 month old baby girl!! The annual event has so far, raised 19,600euros for the Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice which provides care to advanced cancer sufferers and their families within the province of Malaga. The Alberdini Hotel will then host the remainder of the day from 11am; with lots of entertainment for both adults and children. The lower car park will be a Open Air General Market with something for everyone. The upper area will have a dedicated children’s activity area to include face painting. In addition there will be a food terrace serving hot, cold and childrens food. All this together with live music and a raffle.
This promises to be a fantastic day, so please come along and join us, have fun and at the same time, support this worthwhile charity. Cudeca is a chariatable organisation that provides palliative care to advanced cancer sufferers within the province of Malaga, helping over 5000 patients per year. It is made up of specialist doctors and nurses who provide care and attention to those who need it with support to the family during treatment and after the loss of a loved one. This care is completely free of charge. Cudeca receives very little public funding and therefore depends on initiatives for raising money. Making Mosaics
M
aking mosaics began for Moira Schepel, a British artist living in Cómpeta, as a pleasant and creative activity. Only after she went to Ravenna, Italy with Irene Bertoni to follow an intensive course in mosaics (to learn all the ins and outs of mosaics) did she start to realize and appreciate that mosaics is a very particular form of art. Throughout the centuries various cultures practiced mosaic art. The oldest mosaics date back to 3000 B.C. and were found in Mesopotamia (the present Iraq). From Iraq the mosaic art found its way via Egypt, Greece and Sicily to Italy and came to a great development during the Roman Empire. The main flourishing period of mosaic art was between the 5th and 13th Century during the Byzantine era. Moira and Irene were so impressed by their experiences and after learning the various methods, that they started up mosaics workshops themselves in Cómpeta, Spain in 2006.

You don´t have to be an artist to be able to make mosaics. During a week (from Monday till Friday) Moira will teach you the various techniques and methods in her workshop in Cómpeta, which is a 1-hour drive from Málaga. With this knowledge and some inspiration you can apply the various techniques with your own design. You may draw inspiration from numerous sources utilizing an almost unlimited amount of materials. A businessman enters a pub, sits down at the bar, and orders a double martini on the rocks.

After he finishes the drink, he peeks inside his shirt pocket, then orders the bartender to prepare another double martini. The pond was fixed for swimming when it was built. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. SCRUFFS 2012 Let Your Dog Have Its Day This year's Scruffs dog show will take place at the Pavo Real on the Torrox-Competa road on May 12th. Registration is at 1 p.m and the event starts at 2 p.m. If you've got a top dog, a sound hound or you think your pup could win a cup, why not enter your dog? The show will include twelve competition categories, including Best Pedigree, Scruffiest Mutt and Best Six Legs. There will also be a raffle, tombola, a variety of stalls and other delights to entertain both adults and children. Come along with your Pedigree Chum and you could Winalot! The money raised from the event will go to local animal charities in Competa and surrounding villages. But for all this to happen we need your help. If you would like to take the lead and sponsor a competition category, hire a stall for the day or donate a prize for the raffle, please contact Nina on 660586040. CAMPO IS PLEASED TO HAVE DONATED 1,025 EUROS TO THE YOUTH CENTRE IN COMPETA. A large part of the gift was spent on a major upgrade of computer equipment, which allows youngsters without home access to learn and use vital I.T. skills. Additional terminals were part of the upgrade. Inez, Debi and Sue from the CAMPO committee consulted with the staff and users of the centre on other needs. As a result the centre has been provided with new table tennis kit, new pucks for air hockey games, new pool cues, pool chalk and pool triangles. It has been great to assist our younger citizens in this way and the youth centre is a rich community resource. Many thanks to you readers of Grapevine who give fantastic support to our events. Local News MARGARET RIORDAN Torrox pueblo artist, Margaret Riordan, is exhibiting paintings for sale in bar Sands & C on Torrox Costa (closed Thurs.) and at Bar Choto Playa on Peñoncillo Beach, Torrox Costa (closed Tues), until MIDAPRIL. COSTA BAKING Costa Baking have moved premises to Caleta de Velez on the coastal side of the road opposite the vets and next door to the gym! Last month saw the opening of their new shop and they couldn’t open the doors quick enough. They sell their famous cup cakes and beautiful bread and take orders for special occasions. Their new premises has easier access and better parking than before. FIESTA TO CELEBRATE THE HISTORY OF COMPETA. On the 5th May in Plaza Del Carmen from 11.00am there will be a free breakfast typical of the area with Competa oil and tomato’s. From 2.00pm there will be rice with Bacalao and poor mans potatoes. From 8.00pm there will be other food typical of the area such as sardines and chorizo. For the younger ones there will be a bouncy castle from 12.00. The older generation are invited to bring photo’s and discuss years gone by in Competa. The party will continue with dancing, a procession and live music and at 12.00 midnight there will be a surprise!
