Editors Note... Along with Easter and the normal religious festivities that occur in most villages and towns in Spain, there is a whole host of fun things to do over the coming months. The annual Competa Art walk is one of the popular activities to do over the Easter weekend itself. Or visit the new Art Gallery in the centre of Competa which is open for the whole of the month of April as well as the Easter weekend. Further events include Scruffs Dog Show, a Treasure Hunt, an Easter Egg Hunt and Walk for life. Information on all these activities can be found inside this month's magazine. On a personal note The Grapevine would like to congratulate Sugar and Spice, Action for Animals and One Voice for their awards that they received at the Foreigners Day in Competa last month. These organizations or business' are owned or run by foreigners and they were officially recognised with regards to their contribution and role in the community and the village of Competa. Well done!

Melilla - Morocco Border

World Press Photo Exhibition 2013

NEWS IN SPAIN News from around Spain

S

panish border police have found two illegal immigrants hidden in the false bottom of a car in the latest desperate attempt to cross into Europe from Morocco. The two men needed medical treatment after being discovered squeezed into the tiny space beneath the boot of a car crossing from Morocco into Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla. Spain’s Guardia Civil released of a photograph of the two men – aged 22 and 26 and thought to come originally from Mali – curled beneath the car, which had its petrol tank specially adapted to contain them. The driver of the car, a Moroccan national, has been detained and faces charges for people trafficking and abusing the rights of foreign citizens, a crime that carries a minimum four year custodial sentence. The latest incident came just days after another man was discovered hidden inside a suitcase in an attempt to smuggle him through the same border crossing.

and kidney donors in the first such organ trafficking racket to be uncovered in Spain. The group approached illegal immigrants and offered them €40,000 (£33,000) if they proved a match and agreed to donate sections of their liver to a wealthy Lebanese man who had travelled to Valencia, in eastern Spain in search of a transplant. The man, aged 61, who has not been named but is said to hold political office in his native Lebanon was arrested along with four other foreign nationals, police confirmed in a statement issued “Five people were detained for offering 40,000 euros to immigrants without resources so that they would offer themselves for a liver transplant ... the first attempted sale of organs detected in Spain,” the police statement said. “A rich Lebanese citizen who needed a transplant travelled to Spain and tried unsuccessfully to have the operation” by approaching several immigrants as potential donors, it said.

The Catalan capital will also fine people caught feeding pigeons in public parks and those leaving food out for stray cats with penalties of €750 (£618). Barcelona city officials announced the tough new laws in a bid to boost animal protection and improve “co-existence between residents and animals”.Until now, the city laws state that owners could let their dogs off the leash as long as they were well behaved but in future dogs will only be able to run free in specially designated areas within the city. Those who fail to keep their dogs on the leash or do not immediately pick up their dog’s messes will be fined up to €1,500.

ictims of one of the biggest ‘boiler room’ scams ever uncovered have been describing how they were duped into parting with their life savings by a callous gang of international con men. Thousands of British investors, many of them elderly, were left destitute when a network of fraudsters operating from bases in the UK, Spain, the United States and Serbia, targeted them with convincing sales talk, persuading them to spend a fortune on worthless stocks and shares. Police finally smashed the gang this week when they launched a series of coordinated international raids arresting 110 suspects, the vast majority of whom are British. But the breakthrough comes too late for many with at least one heartbroken investor having taken their own life and hundreds of others left facing poverty in their old age. Divorcee Joan Mayer, 78, from Hampshire described how she was conned into parting with a six figure sum by the ‘boiler room’ scammers.

DAY FOR LIFE SUNDAY 01 JUNE, 2014 Fun family day in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care

C

ompeta's ninth annual Walk for Life takes place this year on Sunday, 01 June, 2014 again with a choice of three sponsored walks, 2 walks start at 08.45 from Puerto del Collado, Competa and the 5km walk around the village at 10.45am from The Mirador, Competa. See our website www.walkspain.co.uk/walk-forlife for details and sponsor form. It is free to join any of our walks, all I please ask is that you try and obtain as much sponsor money as possible. Any questions, please contact me Cindy Jones on 665156467 or emails cindyjones19@hotmail.com The walks will terminate at The Alberdini Rural Hotel, Competa where the Day for Life fun begins. From 12 noon onwards, lots of entertainment for both adults and children. A dedicated children's area with Hoopla, Tin Can Alley, Pin the Poo and Cover the Bottle, also Face Painting. For adults only, arranged by Geoff Tyler, there will be a double elimination Darts Tournament which means that both winners and losers can progress to a final. The cost of taking part is only 4€ and players

10 The Grapevine

should sign up and pay at Todo Papel, Competa prior to the event. Please indicate when signing up if you are taking part in one of the walks and Geoff will endeavour to give you a later playing slot. This year, there is an opportunity for the winner to be presented with a fantastic cup, kindly sponsored by Pavo Real, Competa. At lunchtime, The Alberdini will prepare and cook a “Paellagigante” for only 5€ a portion of which 2€ is donated to Cudeca. There will be numerous stalls to meander around, the ever popular home-made cake stall, hand-made jewellery, home-made soaps, Bookstall, Bric-a-Brac, Wooden Carvings, Marmalady selling natural produce of Jams, Marmalades, Pickles and Chutneys, and of course an amazing Raffle Stall. Lots of great prizes have already been generously donated so don't forget to buy your raffle tickets. This year for the first time, we are also running a “Surplus Produce” stall so if you have any surplus produce from your garden or land which you'd like to donate to Cudeca, please bring along on the

day. Likewise if you have any books or bric-a-brac or wish to make a cake, all will be gratefully received on the day. If you have any questions, please contact me, as per the details above. I am really hoping the weather will be kind to us this year, hence the change of date to June. We have a very tough act to follow as last year's event raised 5000€ which included two very generous anonymous donations of 190€and 500€ respectively. My personal goal is to hit 5000€ again; can you help me do it? This will help Cudeca to continue to provide “adding life to days” through their “special kind of caring” – palliative care to over 8500 advanced cancer patients and their families throughout the province of Malaga. I look forward, once again to your fantastic support at our event. A Fun Family Day with lots to see and do, all this plus live music from Andy Time. Thank you Cindy Jones Cudeca Volunteer Website: www.walkspain.co.uk/walk for life

HOE DOWN, TREASURE AND EASTER HUNTS Campo organises loads of fun

Hoe Down What a really great night!!! Yeeha!! Everyone played their part and dressed for the occasion. The winners of the best costumes looked amazing, well done Beth and Phil and the young Spanish visitor who bowled us over and took the children's prize. So many danced the night away and exhausted themselves completely, it was great fun to watch. They were all supposed to be dancing the same steps at the same time but no it didn't happen!! The main thing is everyone enjoyed it. The sideshows and darts were a hit as well, despite a panic before the guests arrived when the paddling pool for the Hooka a duck decided to leak all over the floor. But it is all part of the trials and tribulations that come with putting on an event. We have decided that it will be a repeat next year, watch for it around February time.

CAMPO's Wacky Race Scott McQuillin, who organised Treasure Hunts in the UK, is challenging us to find the answers to all his questions by driving around Competa and some surrounding villages. There is no Treasure (but a great Trophy at the end for the winner)! It will be good fun and will test your knowledge of our local area. I have a feeling we will all learn a lot! Heading off from Bar Lorena, Competa on Sunday 27th April we ask that you are there at 1pm sharp when Scott will brief everyone. To participate all you need to do is go to Todo Papel or find a committee member, complete your registration form, decide on how many Paellas at 5 euros a head you would like on your return to Bar Lorena and pay 5 euros for your entry ticket plus the money for the Paellas and that's it. Simple!

Our thanks go to all those who sponsored us, helped us, bought tickets and generally made sure that we raised funds for Cudeca and Cancer Research, Spain.

The monies raised will buy something that the Nerja Donkey Sanctuary need. If you have any queries please contact Scott at s.mcquillin@btinternet.com

Check out www.aecc.es for the Cancer Research. We raised just over 1000 euros and Cudeca will receive 400 as well as AECC. The balance will remain with us in case someone is in need between events, which is often the case.

CAMPO's Easter Egg Hunt/ Easter Bonnet Parade Saturday 19th April from 3pm until 5pm The Gardens of The Balcon Hotel will hold special treats for the children of Competa up to the age of 12.

12 The Grapevine

We are asking the people of Competa to sponsor an egg. We have envelopes where you can put your sponsor money, minimum 2 euros and with the donations we will buy the Easter Eggs and according to how much you donate the bigger the egg. The children (well parents) will pay 2 euros entry fee and will search the gardens for a number which will be hidden of course. That number will correspond with an egg in the bar area and only then will they discover the size of their egg they have won and their very kind sponsor. One entrance fee, one egg. Once again thanks to Todo Papel, who will keep a supply of the sponsor envelopes and the tickets for the children. They will also be available in The Balcon Hotel and Elaine, Cindy and Mave will be milling around the village envelopes in hand. Now, ladies get stitching those fabulous Easter Bonnets, you know the thing, easter bunnies, chicks, feathers, take your pick. Be at The Balcon Hotel for 4 pm pay 2 euros entry fee, show off your fantastic hat. The best hat will be selected and the talented owner will receive a prize. All funds raised will go to Caritas, Competa. The full information is on our CAMPO Facebook page or you can email us at info.competacampo@gmail.com

pebble, sea-smoothed, fondle it, cradle it in the palm of the hand, shiny and sensuous.

DOES A MALE BOTTOM TURN YOU ON LADIES ? 5 Plus Group of Artists in Competa

I

was wandering round the Bargello gallery in Florence many years ago when my companion, an elderly woman turned to me as we stood in front of Donatello’s statue of David, the shepherd boy who had just slain Goliath, and pointed to his shapely buttocks saying "Don’t you just want to stroke them?" And she was right, you did. Incidentally this is the first life-sized freestanding nude of the Renaissance, all the others like me tired of standing around lean against a wall or a pillar or a tree. But I digress. All of us wandering along a beach at low tide pick up a

I now have time to dawdle in many sculpture galleries in Greece and Italy and I watch the reaction of the people around. The young girls giggle and nudge each other behind the backs of teachers even now and the middle-aged look, study the near by information look again and walk away. Now my generation are less inhibited, we know what we would like to do. Unfortunately apart from warnings from Security ·DO NOT TOUCH· these statues are mounted on high pedestals and you can only - and then when the attendant’s back is turned stroke the feet. I’m sure a cartoonist would have a great time depicting two, three or more old dears bunking each other up for a quick stroke and I’m not just talking about buttocks - but perhaps we should not go there -. enough said. "I don’t understand Art ", I’ve heard many say, some apologetically, others dismissively, but I’ve seen the same people stand stunned, awed by the beautiful land scapes around and the differing effects on them of clouds, shadows, sunrise and sunset, mist and rain. We are sensitive to our surroundings, we can feel comfortable or alarmed. Find in a good dictionary, the word sensation and travel through sensitivity, sensitise, sensual, a column and a half of words and definitions.

The dramatic landscape and the Mediterranean light here in Andalucia attracts many artists from around the world who paint, sculpt, pot and carve , also artists who write poetry, compose and play music and create beautiful Mediterranean gardens. And what about those restaurants we discover where the food is imaginative in taste and presentation . Some of these painters, sculpters etc., will be showing their work in Competa in the Axarquia during the annual Art Walkabout Easter Saturday and Sunday 19th & 20th April. The newly formed· 5Plus · group of artists, 2 Swedish, 1 Danish ,1 German and 1 English, are showing work in Competa the whole month of April in a temporary Gallery in the main square where the church is situated. Do come and visit all of us and talk of your likes and (constructively) your dislikes. Don’t feel guilty that your walls are full and your purse half empty,- we want reaction. Each year after the events we admit to each other that the dialogue between us and our visitors has been most rewarding and memorable. Sorry Ladies - there are no buttocks to stroke (that I am aware of).

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Scruffs is coming?

S

pring is here! So open those closets and take a good look at what you're about to wear this spring and summer. Be honest. If you didn't wear it last year you're unlikely to wear it this year. So please put it in a bag and bring it to The Action for Animals Charity Shop, where we can sell it and raise funds for our ever-expanding workload. And before you put your winter clothes away for another year, take a look at what you didn't wear this season. Why pack it away for another year when you can give it to us and make room in your wardrobe for something deliciously different? Our Spring and Summer clothes are now on the rails and new clothes are added daily. Call in to the shop and see some of the fabulous items we have on sale at the moment. Our prices offer real value for money, with high street labels like Zara, Mango and Monsoon on sale at a fraction of the price you'd pay elsewhere. We even have two entire rails of clothes for just €1 per item.

26 The Grapevine

And if you're off to a fancy dress party, The Charity Shop is the place to visit first. We always have a good supply of fancy dress items and are happy to help you find the perfect outfit. We're proud to say we provided half the population of Cómpeta with their checked shirts for last month's Hoedown at the Hotel Balcon! Whenever you pick up a bargain at The Charity Shop you're also helping us to continue our work here in Cómpeta and the surrounding villages. Our project, to stop unwanted and abandoned animals by neutering the stray animals on our streets and offering financial assistance to owners for neutering their pets, goes from strength to strength. To date we have neutered close to one thousand animals and provided financial assistance to countless pet owners, who for one reason or another have been unable to meet the costs of vital care for their animals. But we can't do any of this without your support, so please donate your unwanted goods and come and shop with us. We need you!

SCRUFFS IS COMING! On May 10th this year we'll be hosting the annual fun dog show “Scruffs” at The Pavo Real on the Torrox-Cómpeta road. Last year's event was a great success and raised over €2000 for us. It's a fun day out for all the family, so please come along to support us and help us beat that figure this year! We'll have a barbecue, some great stalls, including hoopla, face-painting and tombola and a total of twelve fun dog categories where your pooch can win a prize. If you would like to sponsor a trophy, offer a raffle prize or have a stall at the event, please contact Nina on 660586040. Thank you! It is difficult to obtain a fiscal residency certificate without having presented an annual tax declaration. Some people should present one anyway by law. ACCIDENTAL TOURISTS IN MALAGA Alick Howard in Malaga

I

t's often the case that some of the best places to visit are right on your doorstep yet for some reason they're overlooked. Take my Dad, for example, (not literally, you understand!) who has lived in the York area all his seventy plus years but has never stepped foot inside York Minster. This being one of the great tourist attractions of Europe and arguably one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture anywhere in the world. If it's there, we tend to take it for granted and “leave it for another day.

consider Madrid as we're still to visit the capital of our chosen resident country. For various reasons based around flight prices and times we came to the conclusion it wasn't going to work for us this time. So now where? We've been to Seville and Granada, which we both like a lot and to Cordoba, which somehow passed us by as we didn't take to it. Malaga? Kind of. Well we've picked up and dropped off family and friends at the airport and isn't that Malaga in a nutshell? An airport? The gateway to the Costa del Sol, sun, sand, sea and (wait for it!) San Miguel beer. Wrong!

With this in mind, Debbie and I started to plan a short break over the Andalusia Day holiday weekend. Yes, we started to

We've previously visited the port area, which has been greatly improved with shops, cafes and restaurants and enjoyed it but the

rest of the city? Well, only piecemeal so we decided to visit our nearest city as tourists. We booked three nights in the Parador Gibralfaro, which is near the castle and has excellent views across Malaga and the port. After checking in on the Thursday we were straight out for lunch in the port area then just wandered through the streets between Larios and Plaza de la Merced to get our bearings and check out the area for an evening dinner location. After a good meal in Vino Teca it was bed then ready to get our tourist heads on and do Malaga. Friday morning being Andalusia Day the city was buzzing with people. First stop for us was the

port again but this time with a view to a Segway tour. For those of you not familiar with Segway, they're basically a mode of transport like a scooter consisting of a platform on two wheels which stays upright and maneuvers by way of a series of tilt sensors. You move forwards by simply leaning forward, the opposite to stop or go backwards and move the handlebar left and right for direction. Sounds easy and it is but just feels unnatural. After barely 5 minutes practice we were assessed as being good to go! Our guide, David, had the deluxe 'todo terrano' Segway model and led the way dodging between the tourists and pirouetting whilst his new prodigies followed tentatively behind. The Segway was more about the experience but we did a token tour of the Cathedral, Plaza de la Merced, Roman amphitheatre and the Alcazaba. The Alcazaba meant a climb on an uphill road, which was a different experience on a Segway. I have to say, seeing the photos afterwards we looked like a couple of high tec geriatrics going round Malaga but it was fun. No sooner had we finished the tour we were immediately accosted by the catamaran tour ticket seller. I'm not one for boat trips, but as Debbie does like them and she had gone out of her comfort zone on the Segway, I agreed to the sail. Well, according to the ticket seller the price is normally €12 each but we could have it half price. As we had our tourist heads on and were still buzzing from the Segway we just said “Yes!” Can't resist a 'deal'! Not the most exciting of sails, I have to say but afterwards we were ready for a bite so back into the city streets for a late tapas or three at Casa Lola. A busy, bustling bar offering good value tapas just close to El Pimpi, if any of you know that.

To advertise call 637 028 873

After a very pleasurable evening meal at Meson de Cervantes off Plaza de la Merced it was bed and then day three of touring Malaga. First visit of the day was to the Museo Automovilista de Malaga. This is Malaga's car museum, situated in the old tobacco factory. I'm not a petrol head but the museum is very impressive and a great way to kill an hour and a half. Great exhibits of vintage cars as well as exhibits of amazing concept cars, John Lennon's psychedelic Rolls Royce and a 6 metre long Cadillac. Well worth a visit. The lowlight of the day for me, but a highlight for Debbie, was a trip out to Marbella and La Cañada shopping centre. A shopping centre, what more needs to be said?

Our final day we had to pay a visit to the Picasso museum. I'm not a great art lover but I do enjoy wandering round galleries, if nothing else to listen to other art lovers waffling on about how they could see what the artist was trying to do and how his mind was tortured during this piece, blah, blah, blah! I think you either like Picasso or not and he was either tortured or just couldn't draw, especially people. Any of his female partners must have been gutted on seeing one of his finished 'portraits' of them.

After a return to the parador, a quick shower and change it was to Plaza Mayor just on the outskirts of Malaga for a visit to the cinema. For Debbie it was her first time in a cinema anywhere since we moved to Spain 9 years ago and for me the first time in Spain. She was amazed by the colour films and that it wasn't a Cowboy and Indian movie we were seeing. (You're probably not even allowed to say that nowadays. It's probably a Bovine Young Male Person and Native American film!) Anyway, our film of choice was Gravity in 3D, which involves wearing special glasses and gives the impression the cinema is full of people too cool for their own good or not wanting to be recognized whilst at the cinema. It was a very enjoyable film and proved why you should never let a female astronaut repair then try and drive a space station. Carnage!

To the un-artistic eye he doesn't look like he's moved on much further than art classes in second year of primary school just after the morning bottle of milk break. If you say to an art lover, “Anyone could have done that,” the standard reply is, “Ah, but you didn't and he did and that's why!” Time I went in my parents' loft and dug out those drawings I did when I was five of a stick man one and a half times higher than his house but half the size of the sunflower in the garden. Anyone could do it but they didn't and I did.

Our final evening meal back in Malaga was at a Greek restaurant. Well, as they say, when in Spain…….oh! Anyway, it wasn't the best so we should have stuck with native cuisine.

“Pablo, my love, do I really have different coloured eyes, one higher than the other, a mouth full of teeth coming out of my forehead and a breast growing on my shoulder?”

So thus ended our few days as tourists in Malaga. We certainly didn't do it all and have left more to see on our next visit. I recommend next time you go and pick up friends or relatives from the airport, consider having a stop-over in Malaga for a night and see what you're missing. Malaga – more than just an airport.

ART WALK IN COMPETA Easter weekend 19th to 20th April

T

he 6th Art Walk will return to Cómpeta this year over the Easter weekend, Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of April from 11.00 - 19.00 o'clock. This event aims to bring together the community in an animated, artistic atmosphere & will be hosted at various venues in Cómpeta. The previous 5 Art Walks have been a great success and many people from Cómpeta, other inland villages and coastal towns, have enjoyed this vibrant festival of arts and crafts. The weekend will offer all those with an interest in art the chance to meet the multinational artists of Cómpeta who have made Andalusia their home for many years. Paintings, photographs, graphics, drawings, stoneware pottery, papier mache, turned wood, textile works and bronze sculptures will be shown. More than 19 artists and craftspeople will show their works. Even the very young inhabitants of the village will have the chance to taste what it is like to

paint on a canvas. Children will be offered the chance to take part in a workshop, given by participating artists, to create their own piece of art work. These works will be shown in many different locations during the Easter weekend. Andalusian life is the inspiration for many of the artists and the typical looks of this region can be seen in several of the art-works on display. In the poetic and atmospheric works of Bettina Winters we experience the typical scenes of rough mountains and old white walls. Moorish influences can be found in the work of the Finnish artist Kirsti Jantunen. Whilst the beautiful scenery that surrounds the workshop of German artist Christa Hillekamp can be seen in many of her landscapes. This 6th Art Walk will feature many artists participating for the first time, such as Dutch artist Lieuwke Loth who will exhibit drawings and bronze sculptures. Also on show will be the very colorful works of our special guest-artists Pamela Perez Bernal originally from Chile and

the hot and vital works of Spanish artist Manuel Lecrin. If walking the Art Walk builds up an appetite why not have a break at the Hotel Balcon, one of the exhibition venue; whose restaurant will be offering a special art lunch. Can't wait until the Easter weekend? A group of five local artists, called "ARTE 5+", will be exhibiting their works during the whole month of April in 'Plaza Almijara' opposite the kiosk. Opening Tuesday 1st April at 18.00. Lieuwke's works will also be on display all month in the art house 'Luz de la Vida' opposite the restaurant El Pilon, C. San Antonio no.15 opening Friday 19.00. This Easter weekend the artists & their art will shine, and we hope the sun will too. Cómpeta is THE place to find art this spring, so on behalf of the artists and craft people of Cómpeta, we welcome you to the 6th Art Walk this April! reathless, we flung us on a windy hill, laughed in the sun, and kissed the lovely grass by Rupert Brooke Sitting quietly, doing nothing, Spring comes, and the grass grows by itself. - The Gospel According To Zen The grass may be greener on the other side of the fence, but you still have to mow it. Anon. Grass is the cheapest plant to install and the most expensive to maintain. - Pat Howell Lawns polarise. Gardeners and non-gardeners argue about them and we fuss over them probably more than any other plant. It's a true love/hate relationship but I´m not going to argue the pros and cons here. I simply want to remind you that, if you own a lawn, now is the time to give it some tender loving care if you want that ´green sward´ to be proud of. Most lawns here are planted with Bermuda grass or cynodon dactylon. It gives a springy surface well able to cope with heavy duty wear. Few people

recognise that it is also the invasive weed that we know so well as couch grass. Widely used for lawns in warm climates, even though it browns off in cooler winter temperatures, it is one of few that will support the rigours of summer heat without incessant watering. It forms thick mats by means of stolons and the spreading stems take root at the lower nodes. Invasive, yes, but it´s also very tolerant and stabilises ground very well.

the grass intact, again we have one in stock. There are also a few other tasks you can perform to have an exuberant lawn.

Even though it is tough and forms a much coarser lawn than we would be used to in Northern Europe, it still requires a level of care to look good and the best time for that is now.

Aeration: Over time, the ground under your lawn becomes compacted and it becomes important to aerate it so that water can be absorbed instead of puddling on the surface. These permanently wet areas will suffocate the grass roots, growth will be weak and moss will take hold. Aeration is simply achieved by going over the area with a fork or spiked shoes. In thick clay soils, sand can then be raked into these holes to improve drainage. Normally this would be carried out every 2 or 3 years, always in springtime.

A well-kept lawn will give you less problems. Fertilising will keep the grass vigorous and strong enough to block out weeds. Best to use a special lawn fertiliser (we have an organic one in stock) – never sprinkle the chemical granules, type 15-15-15, because they will burn the grass. Cut it regularly to thicken and strengthen and, if weeds do invade, apply a selective weed-killer for lawns which will kill off broad-leaved weeds and leave

Scarification: Again, over time, your lawn will build up a ´thatch´ of dead leaves, roots etc. which is detrimental to the living grass. It suffocates, prevents water entering and can cause fungal infection; so it is best removed. Using a lawn rake (long curved tines which, whilst strong, are also springy) rake over the entire surface one way then repeat at right angles. This should be carried out every couple of

years, in springtime and after you´ve given the lawn a short cut. Dispose of all the debris. The immediate aspect of the lawn will be ugly but, don´t worry, your grass will appreciate it and within a few days will be looking better! Now is a good time to fertilise or level out low areas with a fine layer of soil; water well after either application. Scarifying will also enable you to see if there are any bald or thin patches (Often in areas of heavy duty, natural pathways etc.) and, if so, re-sow. When re-sowing, always try to match your existing grass type otherwise patches will be very obvious. We have tubs of cynodon dactylon in stock. Cover these freshly sown areas with a light layer of soil to speed germination and make sure to keep them moist. If the area is really poor, containing less than 50% of grass, you´d be better to dig it over and start afresh rather than patching.

area to a depth of approx. 15cm. and work in a quality top soil. Level to the same height as the surrounding lawn. Scatter seed as indicated on the pack (type of grass will dictate coverage rate) and lightly cover with 2mm of good soil, raking very lightly. Compact it lightly with a wooden board. Keep this top surface damp, watering with a fine spray perhaps as often as four times a day to aid germination. Once the new grass is 2 cm high, you can reduce watering to normal levels for the lawn. I´d advise always using an ant powder when sowing grass seed as they seem to have a passion for the seeds and you´ll see them carrying them off. Re-sewing here, with warm weather grasses, is best carried out during springtime, when the weather starts to warm up. If you are planting stolons, this can be carried out from April through summer, given that you can apply

There are signs of economic improvement in Spain which experts and real estate agents expect to impact the property market with 2014 seeing more sales after a better than expected 2013. A new report from financial services firm JP Morgan predicts that Spain’s economy is set to grow by 1% in 2014 having seen encouraging results in industrial output, exports and consumer spending and confidence. It believes that Spain’s economy has healed enough and its banks are now well capitalised. La Caixa, the third biggest bank in Spain, forecasts that unemployment will start falling in the second half of this year, helping to bring the adjustment in house prices to an end. It takes the view that a gradual economic recovery is more likely than not in 2014, adding that ‘the risk of a new slump appears limited’. Coming off the back of a stronger 2013, further increase in sales volume is predicted in 2014 as buyer confidence continues to grow.

THE PROPERTY MARKET IN SPAIN IS SHOWING SIGNS OF RECOVERY‌ Creative Property Marketing Reports

O

wners of property in Spain will be pleased to know that there are definitely signs of the property market recovering. This is not just our observation but also the findings of the Property Register who have just recently produced their statistics for 2013. Statistics show, according to the Property Register for the whole of Spain that sadly, the market declined for homes purchased by Spanish Nationals and interestingly, the Chinese but increased healthily with regards to other foreign nationals. The British still top the leader board when it comes to buying in Spain but the Scandinavians, Germans and French are now a

60 The Grapevine

lot more active in the market place. Of course, the Russians still love Marbella but a few are venturing a little further afield now. We too at Creative Property have noticed an increase in activity from potential buyers from all corners of the globe. Enquiries started 2014 with an incredible inundation of interest for all kinds of properties from apartments to farms to villas. Viewings are also very noticeably up which is great news. What is also encouraging is that viewings are now not mostly happening at the lower end of the market but at the higher end too. Once buyers start to invest larger amounts of money in a property market, this is a good sign of confidence returning.

You will find us approachable, knowledgeable, proactive and enthusiastic. Our sellers find our open and honest approach, 'a breath of fresh air' and many say that, 'we do much more for them than the estate agents and we are not charging them thousands of euros in commission!' We do not charge commission when you sell the property and only charge â‚Ź296.45 for 12 months advertising on all the websites we use. We do everything for you except conduct the viewings. If you are not always at the property, don't worry, we are used to liaising with neighbours or housekeepers. We will happily answer any questions you may have and welcome your phone call or email. THINKING OF SELLING? NOW IS THE TIME TO MARKET YOUR PROPERTY! by Sunset Properties

M

emories of the long cold wet winter in much of northern Europe are still lingering in the thoughts of potential buyers of property in the sunnier climate on offer here in Spain. As we approach Easter, this is traditionally the time of year when many people decide to commence their search for a new home in the sun. But it's not just the weather, the state of the economy is picking up in the UK and beyond, many people have more money to spend and more confidence in the economy of their own country and that in Spain with a likely EU bail out no longer constantly being mentioned in the media. April is a great time to put your house on the market so that it is already being marketed as the Easter period arrives. At this time of year we can usually

COMPETA ART WALK The 6th Art Walk will return to Cómpeta this year over the Easter weekend, Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of April from 11.00 - 19.00 o'clock. This event aims to bring together the community in an animated, artistic atmosphere & will be hosted at various venues in Cómpeta. The weekend will offer people from far and wide, with an interest in art, the chance to meet more than 19 of the multinational artists of Cómpeta. Paintings, photographs, graphics, drawings, stone ware pottery, papier mache, turned wood, textile works and bronze sculptures will be shown. Many of the artists have made Andalusia their home for several years and the typical looks of this region can be seen in several of the art-works on display. This 6th Art Walk will feature many artists participating for the first time, such as Dutch artist Lieuwke Loth who will exhibit drawings and bronze sculptures and guest-artists Pamela Perez Bernal originally from Chile

Spanish artist Manuel Lecrin. Many village children will be taking part in a workshop, to create their own piece of art work. Can't wait until the Easter weekend? A group of five local artists, called "ARTE 5+", will be exhibiting their works during the whole month of April in 'Plaza Almijara' opposite the kiosk. Lieuwke's works will also be on show all month in the art house 'Luz de la Vida' opposite the restaurant El Pilon. This Easter weekend the artists & their art will shine, and we hope the sun will too. Cómpeta is THE place to find art this spring, so on behalf of the artists and craft people of Cómpeta, we welcome you to the 6th Art Walk this April! Free admission . U3A PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP LAUNCH AN ONLINE GALLERY The Photography Group of the U3A in Axarquia have recently launched an online gallery of member's photos & of photographs from photo-shoots undertaken by the Group at their monthly meetings. The gallery can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/u3a photographygroup/ This development follows on from the regular exhibition of members work in partnership

with Taperias La Jarta in Torre del Mar, which has now been successfully running for just over six months, having started after an approach was made to the Group at their Annual Photographic Exhibition, held last year at the Oficina de Turismo in Torre del Mar. Using the popular image hosting website – FLICKR – which was itself launched in 2004, and became part of the Yahoo stable a year later, members upload photos that they have taken as individuals onto the site. Each member can have their own 'photobox', if they are regular users of the gallery, or just upload into the 'Members Photos' photobox. In addition, photos from Group photo-shoots are gathered together, and these can then be used by group members to discuss each other's pictures at following group meetings. Commenting on this new development, Photography Group Leader & U3A President Roland Gillet, welcomed the extension of the group's activities, and said that he looked forward to more group members getting involved in this exciting new project. The Photography group meet monthly at varying venues in Axarquia & details of future meetings, and all U3A activities can be found at the U3A website
