Not only is it an Art Exhibition there are activities to get involved in too and live music to listen to. This year there is even shuttle buses up to the village. NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

panish intelligence officials believe at least two of the 10 attackers who broke into the North Korean embassy in Madrid last month, holding staff hostage and making off with computers, are linked to the CIA, according to a report in El País. Police and Spain’s national intelligence centre (CNI) are investigating the unusual robbery, which took place on 22 February in the west of the capital. The online newspaper El Confidencial, which broke the news of the raid, reported that the group of men tied up and threatened staff, fleeing only after a woman managed to free herself and raise the alarm. Through an interpreter, she told the police: “A group of men came into the embassy and has gagged the staff.” El Confidencial said a police officer dispatched to the embassy was told everything was fine by a man who answered the door, but moments later, “the gates swung open … and two high-end cars came out at great speed, leaving the area within seconds”. El País said Spanish investigators had studied CCTV footage of the intruders, questioned embassy staff and examined the cars used in the getaway. “Although most of the [attackers] were Korean, at least two of them have been identified by Spanish intelligence services as having links to the US CIA,” it said. The paper said the Spanish authorities had raised the matter with the CIA, which had denied involvement “but not in a very convincing manner”.

19 year old man who was tracked by police to Spain and returned to the UK under a European Arrest Warrant has been found guilty of murder at an Old Bailey hearing. Jack Stevens, 19, was arrested for the murder of 27-year-old of Nashon Esbrand in Islington in August 2017. Stevens was traced down following an investigation involving the Metropolitan Police, the National Crime Agency and Spanish authorities. H was found guilty of murdering Mr Esbrand. Three other people – Dillon Zambon, 21; Jhon Berhane, 19; and a 17-year-old from Islington – were sentenced last year in connection with the attack. Zambon and Berhane both got life sentences and the youth, who was 15 at the time of the attack, was handed a minimum of 12 years for landing the fatal stab wound.The prosecution alleged that Stevens, then aged 18, played a leading role in the “coordinated” pursuit, entrapment and killing of Nashon Esbrand, 27, that ended with the victim being stabbed three times on a doorstep yards from his parents’ house. He died in hospital the following morning.

7) In Andalucia, when the inheritance transfer takes place between direct relatives (spouses and children) there are allowances of up to 1,000,000â&#x201A;Ź per heir. This is applicable to Andalusian residents and Europeans. Therefore, in most cases there is no inheritance tax to be paid. 8) The tax return for an inheritance must be filed within 6 months from the date of the death.

10 IMPORTANT INHERITANCE ISSUES TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT IF YOU ARE AN EXPAT IN ANDALUCIA (A FOREIGNER LIVING PERMANENTLY IN ANDALUSIA - SPAIN).

f you live in Andalucia for more than 183 days a year, you should be a tax resident in Spain. 2) The residence of the deceased person and the beneficiary are key points which decide where the inheritance taxes should be submitted i.e. at the Andalucia Tax office (in case of residents in Andalucia) or at the Spanish Inland Revenue in Madrid (in case of being non-residents). 3) The inheritance laws to be applied to an inheritance (regarding the distribution and disposition of assets) would be the ones of the nationality of the deceased person. i.e. if you are British, the British laws will apply to your inheritance.

4) If you have assets in Spain (i.e. real estate property, funds in bank accounts, shares, vehicles, etc) it is recommendable to make a Spanish will only for the distribution of the Spanish assets. It will make things easier, cheaper and quicker for your relatives when anything happens to you. 5) The signed Spanish will will be 100 % respected as long as it complies with your national laws. It is important to seek advice when drafting your will. 6) If you receive an inheritance, and are a tax resident in Spain, the inheritance taxes, (if any), should be paid in Spain; even if the assets inherited are situated outside of Spain.

9) Transmission of ownership of the assets of the deceased person is not automatic and it is also compulsory to carry out some complicated Legal and tax paperwork, (e.g.: - get certificate of last will, sign the inheritance deeds in front of a public notary, file the inheritance tax returns, etc), in order to acquire ownership of the inheritance. It is highly recommended that you seek advice and professional assistance from a solicitor. 10) When receiving an Inheritance in Spain, it is not only the estate of the deceased person that is inherited, but also their debts. Therefore, this matter should be checked out before accepting an inheritance so that it does not turn into a nightmare. The debts could be higher than the assets !!!!! See Advert Opposite

family who owns the Estrella disco pub next to the hotel also had an outside disco area for the summer. David and Pepe bought this land from the Estrella disco pub to allow space for the hotel pool and a small garden. By 1st November 1996 a hotel was built with pool, ballroom, petanca and a tennis court and was awaiting their first guests. As their two families grew closer Maria spent plenty of her younger years in England visiting David’s family in Oxford and learning English to a very high standard. She helped out at David`s son B &B so both studied and gained work experience in the UK.

AN INTERVIEW WITH MARIA FROM THE HOTEL BALCON, COMPETA Some History with a Bit of Gossip Thrown In!

his month I interviewed Maria the manager and daughter of the owner of the Hotel Balcon in Competa. It was one of the most interesting interviews I have done as Maria informed me a lot about the past in Competa, when the hotel was built, her family and how she came to be manager, when initially it wasn’t what she wanted! Maria and her brother Wenceslao and her father Pepe and her mother Mari Trini are all originally from the village of Competa. They spent some time in Malaga but then returned to Competa to open

Bar Franquelo (their family name). Bar Franquelo was where Taberna de Oscar is today. It was around the time Franquelo opened that the tourists really started to come to Competa. One new tourist arriving in the area was an Englishman called David. He and his family became firm friends with Marias family and it was David that suggested to Pepe one day “let’s build a hotel!”…….. So they did! The plot where they planned to build the hotel already had a skeleton concrete structure for apartments with space for parking underneath. David and Pepe bought the structure and built a hotel and ballroom below. The

In the year 2000 the Hotel bungalows were built to provide extra rooms and the garden was extended and a parking area was made. But as time went on Pepe, who managed the Hotel, wanted to take more time out to rest and enjoy his family. Neither Maria nor Wenceslao felt ready to take over as the owners and they weren’t even sure that’s what they wanted long term. So, in 2009 they rented the hotel out to a man from Benidorm. This proved not to be a successful period as he soon stopped paying the rent and then refused to leave the hotel until the courts made him. This was far from the peaceful time Pepe had hoped for! One and half years later Pepe finally got his hotel back and he ran it for another couple of years until Maria agreed to take it over. In June 2013 Maria and her husband Luis the head chef in the restaurant took over the hotel Balcon. Wenceslao wanted to work with his wife’s family in the Pizzeria next door and didn’t want to manage the hotel so it was left in Maria hands. She explained, although she had worked there for years actually managing it was a different matter. She had experience, but no money and her father always seemed to be there, not really letting go, not an easy situation to be in!

When Maria took over she already had 1 child but having a second child and running a hotel was going to prove impossible. Maria explained sometimes things in life just seem to work out. She found out she was pregnant for the second time just as Sergio approached her about working at the hotel. Sergio was a wellrespected waiter and manager of the then Casona Restaurant in the Plaza of Competa (now Casa Paco). Sergio didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the lease renewed on Casona so was looking for new employment. He gave an offer to Maria and she agreed on the basis he worked for them for minimum of a year. This allowed Maria peace of mind and time off during her second child. Sergio took care of the hotel extremely well while Maria took a back seat to concentrate on her family. After a year Sergio left and Maria once again took over the hotel management. Now Sergio is in Pampano Restaurant Over the years Maria has gained confidence and has made successful changes and

improvements to the hotel. For example 8 of the 24 rooms have been upgraded. All rooms now have flat screen televisions and Wi-Fi is free to all guests. She has changed all the mattresses and matress bases on the beds as she understands the importance of a good nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sleep whilst staying away from home. The tennis court has been painted and the gardens reformed and most recently a disabled entrance has been created to the swimming pool. As testament to the hotel many guests repeatedly return in fact, in the third week of June Maria said every room is filled with repeat visitors. The aim is for the hotel to continually improve their standards and upgrade as they go along. This year they also have the new awning on the terrace overlooking the pool. You can sit underneath the awning not exposed to the elements and enjoy the fabulous views down to the coast. Throughout the summer the awning will also become a welcome relief from the sun.

Another area Maria has improved is the live entertainment. The Hotel offers a fabulous range of live acts from Flamenco to Contemporary music along with wine tasting and fashion shows. This alongside regular Paella Nights, Menu del Dia and Sunday Lunch means there is plenty for the locals to enjoy in Competa as well as guests in the hotel. As I was leaving the hotel Maria pointed out the photos framed on the wall of the King and Queen of Spain. The royals visited, lunched and rested in one of the hotels rooms before leaving by helicopter. She said she was only young at the time but the whole event was incredibly memorable and special both for herself and an honour for the hotel. If you would like to dine in the same restaurant as the King and Queen of Spain then the Hotel Balcon is the place for you!

he 11th Art Walk on Saturday 20th, Sunday 21st, Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th of April.” If you love art, you will not want to miss it! Discover the beautiful village: with 38 international artists, representing 9 different nationalities, all showing their work at various venues. 26 venues this year! Cómpeta is only an hour's drive from Malága, if you do not have your own transport, there is public transport from Malaga, Torre del mar and Nerja to the village. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the artists at work and meet them personally. One can admire paintings, drawings, textile art, photographic art, mixed media work, video-projections, ceramics, bronze, wood, stone and steel sculptures. And you're welcome to participate in workshops like raku firing, papermaking and printmaking. For the kids a colouring has been created by participating artist, Lieuwke Loth. The colourings can be admired on the wall of the school. The event has grown in recent years towards a cultural festival! Now new activities are included: Saturday there is a meditation ceremony and Sunday a storytelling event. Monday (no Art Walk day!) Freedance. And 4 Dutch students of the Arnhem Theatre School, will ‘move’

as 'Art-Walkers' in the streets of Cómpeta, submerging the village in creative vibes. Let yourself be carried away by positive energy and be open to new encounters! On top of this, each day you can enjoy up to two exceptional live performances from local professional musicians and those from afar including Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Poland and the UK. We have performances from Aire Flamenco (Spanish flamenco music) Flor-de-lis (Flamenco and Italian) Los Alquimistas (jazz and blues) Maika Lavera and the Grajos (soul, rock and blues) Duo Masque (world music) and Espabelgajazz (jazz and lounge). The 'Nomades eclecticos' recently formed from local (professional) musicians, will play at Wed 24/4 at the plaza Almijara bringing an eclectic mix of genres from jazz and blues to world. The village has many options for charming accommodation and fantastic restaurants. Booking a night will certainly be worthwhile! The event is organized for the 6th consecutive time by Dutch artist and gallery owner Lieuwke Loth with her team of commited volunteers. We are grateful to the town hall for providing us with their available space for use during the Art Walk and for their cooperation and inclusion of the Art Walk into

The organisation is very pleased with the number of businesses who have chosen to support this vibrant cultural event. he past year has been very busy for us, full of new experiences. We started out this new venture with an open mind and we've enjoyed every moment. We have listed many properties and decided to expand our means of publicizing. Discovering new means and technology in this field is an exciting and rewarding journey. We have now contracted a second search engine and have our very own radio commercial! But what we are most proud of is that we are now making property videos by ourselves. Filming, editing & using new technologies have always been a passion so we decided to use this to our advantage and offer our sellers an extra service. After researching the best accessories to use we are now

capable of making professional looking videos. The reactions have been very positive. Both seller & buyer benefit from our videos. The whole process takes up some time but we don't mind. The most important thing is that buyers get a better idea of the properties' location, the surroundings, the views etc. Pictures tell a lot but usually people don't get the whole picture. The video shows the strengths and weaknesses of the property. We noticed that our videos have a positive impact on the viewings. The buyers are far better prepared and know what to expect, rendering viewings more to the point. In the meantime, we bought our second company car so look out for us on the road in the whole of the Axarquia region when we are on our way to list or view properties.

We've managed to sell properties that were on the market for quite some time, found people's dream houses, helped them find the right professionals for renovations, etc. We intend to be there before, during and after the sales process. Our first year was incredible and we never could have thought we would do as good as we have done. We are continuously looking for ways to improve our business for buyers & sellers alike and we are very motivated to do even better this year! We have been amazed by the different nationalities contacting us. Belgian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, French, German & British clients have crossed our paths. he palm is ubiquitous in southern Spain; it's all around us, especially along our coastlines but nothing prepared us, when we visited there recently, for the total immersion in greenery that the town of Elche presents. Over 200,000 palms; approximately one palm for every person living there – that's a lot of palms – and it is the greatest concentration of palm trees in Europe and, arguably, the world. Palms have been around in southern Europe before the presence of humans; the Ice Age put an end to most of them, except in particularly sheltered areas such as Elche which is close to the sea but protected from the vagaries of a coastal position. But it was certainly the Arabs, during the 8th and 9th centuries, who developed the system of huertos or orchards that you can still so clearly see today. The similarity to oases is striking; the division and sorting of the land, the irrigation channels and cultivation of the palm is purely Arabic. Water is the giver of life and it was fundamental to the splendour of the Islam age. The formation of the ancient acequias (irrigation ditches) gave birth to famous cities in arid

areas as far flung as Bagdad through to Sevilla and Cordoba; the twin cities of Marrakech and Elche were formed at around the same time, towards the end of the tenth century. By dividing the land into regularly sized parcels, the ministration of the little water available became simpler. But it was salty water so palms (and particularly the date palm) were used to frame the plots to provide protection from the sun and drying winds and filter the water, reducing its salinity and, thus, inside the protection of the palms, plants such as olive, pomegranate, jujube, lemons, oranges and alfalfa could be grown. The family of palms is made up of same 2,800 different species and they are seen all over our semitropical and tropical world. It is one of our most practical plants providing us with dates, coconuts, flour, oil, honey and wine. The plant tissue is used for all forms of woven fabrics as well as building materials. Palms are not trees – though we commonly, but mistakenly, refer to palm trees! The trunk, or stipe as it is more correctly called, is

composed of the remains of the bases of old leaves that intertwine forming a columnar shape. Unlike tree trunks formed from wood, this gives the palm strength yet flexibility. This false trunk can only grow in height, not width. The sap of the palm does not circulate the circumference of the trunk but only through the central core or medulla. This peculiarity in the plant world also makes them remarkably fire resistant; they are able to sprout new shoots from their ashes, which is probably how they get their generic name, phoenix. The trunk is crowned by a crest of leaves that grow in a spiral form made of up to 40 leaves, some reaching up to 3m in length. You can roughly age a palm by its stipe – every metre indicates 10 years of growth. The date palm (phoenix dactylifera) is one of our oldest domesticated plants and they can live for 200 to 300 years reaching a height of up to 30m. Some exceptional palms in Elche are older than that. There are separate male and female plants; the males are necessary for pollination, a wind-borne process that is often helped along manually in Elche, known as entaconado; fertilised females bear dates which are very nutritional with a high natural sugar level (the next time

An ancient Arab saying says that a good Tuareg warrior can survive 3 days in the desert with just one date; the first day he would eat the flesh, the second day the skin and the third day the ground-up seed. Makes me feel bad when I think of how lavishly I eat them! Elche is the only place in the world where the artisanal process of working with white palm still exists. Clusters of palm leaves are tied together (whilst still attached to the plant) during December. This effectively stops photosynthesis and the new leaves forming are blanched white – much as we do with celery or leeks. From Palm Sunday and through the summer, this covering is extended to allow for growth of the leaves. From September onwards, the creamy white leaves are collected, always leaving the palm with sufficient fronds to grow on strongly. (This is not like the cutting of palm hearts when the plant dies because the heart is taken away) These pale leaves are brushed and cleaned and soaked in bleaching tanks to further whiten them. they can then be plaited and twisted into works of art which are much sought after for Easter processions. We were lucky enough to watch the women weaving these creamy fronds into fantastical statues and whimsies for tourists. It reminded me of the old way of lace making, so fine was the work – though it must be hard on the fingers!
