United Kingdom on tax cooperation entered into force earlier this month. While the British Overseas Territory was no longer on the European Union or the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)’s lists of non-cooperative jurisdictions, it remained on Spain’s own blacklist, created in 1991. The goal of this unprecedented treaty, which was published in Spain’s Official Gazette last month, is to ensure that Gibraltar applies EUequivalent legislation in terms of tax transparency and the fight against money laundering following Britain’s exit from the EU. The agreement also seeks to reinforce cooperation and information exchange to prevent the British Overseas Territory from becoming a magnet for Spanish tax evaders.

NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

the Spanish parliament's lower house - Congreso has approved last month (18 March) a law that will legalise euthanasia in the country, one of the few in the world that will help an incurable patient die to avoid suffering. The legislation, which will come into force in June after a threemonth moratorium, responds to a growing social demand and follows high-profile cases such as that of Ramón Sampedro. “It is a victory for the people who can benefit from it and also for Ramón," said Ramona Maneiro, the friend who helped Sampedro die. Although she was arrested, she was not tried for lack of evidence. Spain will be only the fourth European country to decriminalise assisted death, along with the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The new Spanish law authorises euthanasia, in which medical personnel administer the drug, and assisted suicide, in which the person is in charge of taking the prescribed dose. Several other countries tolerate the latter option, as well as so-called

passive euthanasia - the interruption of life-sustaining medical treatments. he law, which has the support of the left and the centre parties, will allow anyone with a "serious and incurable disease" or a "chronic and incapacitating" condition to request help to die and thus avoid "intolerable suffering”. Strict conditions are imposed, including that the person, of Spanish nationality or legally resident, be "capable and conscientious" when making the request. This must be confirmed in writing "without external pressure" and be repeated fifteen days later. The doctor can always reject it if he or she considers that the requirements are not met. In addition, it must be approved by another doctor and receive the green light from an Evaluation Commission. Any health professional can claim "conscientious objection" to refuse to participate in the procedure.

Boosting the support aims to reinvigorate the SME market, which is considered a vital element of the country’s economic revival in the months and years ahead. The impact of SMEs in the Spanish economy is significant: data obtained in 2018 indicated that 300 billion euros per year is added in value to the economy by them. With Spain’s unemployment figures recently hitting worryingly high levels of 3.7 million (16.1%), the ability of SMEs to create and sustain jobs will also be crucial to the economy’s revival.

Last week, I visited several groups that we are supporting, and I have to say, these people are absolutely amazing! I met a group of volunteers who are holding coffee mornings for Alzheimer sufferers and their families. They are wonderful people, saints. I sat there and cried while a new family joined the group. It had taken a year to get the father/ husband to agree to attend, a smartly dressed man and his lovely wife constantly by his side. After 5 minutes he wanted to leave, he was looking around and mouthing to his son, why are we here, who are these people, let's go. The look of confusion and fear in his eyes made me cry, it was so, so sad to see, but these volunteers show a level of patience and kindness that is truly amazing.

The majority are volunteers and spend an enormous amount of time and energy into ensuring that some of the more vulnerable people in our English-speaking society are looked after and cared for. Why am I writing this... because Lobster also cares and would also like help. And the first weekend of October is Torrox feria with music, a fairground, entertainment and plenty of food and drink! ON- LINE SHOPPING How Trends Have Changed

nline shopping will continue to develop during 2021 and trends show what will be the favourite companies in electronic commerce. There are different categories but there is a lot of demand in food and retail. Spaniards have increased their digital spending on food by 25 percent during the coronavirus pandemic and Mercadona, Lidl and Carrefour are in the top positions, according to a Bnext report collected in Inforetail . Other data shows that, in 2020, the average online spending in retail was more than eight percent. The companies that led the purchases were Amazon, AliExpress and El Corte Inglés . Women have increased their average spending by more than eighty percent in the Chinese multinationals and more than seventy percent in American companies. Travel and transportation

expenses have fallen due to movement restrictions. The decreases in these purchases are almost 20 percent and more than 10, respectively and comparing these data with 2019. Also, orders for electronics, food delivery and leisure decrease, although to a lesser extent. Who buys more? Men are the ones who continue to buy more online.. In addition, after a year of a pandemic, Spaniards between 40 and 49 years old are the ones who used most of their money on online purchases, followed by young people between 20 and 29 years old. The age group between 60 and 69 years increased their budget by more than seventy percent. For the summer months, Internet purchases grew the most, almost 75 percent compared to 2019. It corresponds to the time when people move the most and are travelling. The regions where

electronic commerce grew the most was the Canary Islands, followed by Cantabria and Extremadura. Andalusia, Aragon and Murcia , were the communities where average spending on internet purchases has increased the least. At Christmas spending on line increased more than sixty percent in 2020 compared to the previous year. Food shopping is the expense in which the Spanish invested the most. All this data will continue to rise during 2021 because restrictions continue and consumption and shopping habits have changed abruptly with lockdowns and closures. Companies already know that the future comes, comes from Internet commerce and what, a few years ago, was a residual activity; at present, it is being reinforced due to the demand of the citizens.

Using her full driving licence, she zipped about on a small cc scooter, until she was fifty, when she bought a 500cc bike (she’s less than five foot tall) passed her test and rode for about twenty years tackling Hampshire’s traffic. Up until lockdown she taught children ‘Taekwondo’, she’s older than me and amazing!

became a biker chick, (Granny), when I was about sixty-five. One drunken Friday Night in Bar David, about 2007 or 08, my friend told my Husband that had just joined the Competa Moto Club situated at Plaza Vendimia and was off to a ‘Reunion’ (meeting) on that Sunday. His wife wasn’t keen on going so he was looking for a companion of the back. (Probably hoping for my Husband to volunteer). I was chatting with the ladies when I discovered that my Husband had volunteered me as the pillion passenger. ‘Jo won’t mind, she’s ridden bikes before’, was the boast. Now I may have exaggerated that a tad, yes in 1959 (aged 16) I had a boyfriend for a couple of months with a bike, my older

friend went out with his older brother, who had a, ‘Triumph 500’, and all the leathers, so I tagged along on a blind date only to find the brother rode an’ Ariel Leader’, one step up from a scooter. Never exceeding the speed limit, preferring to ride side by side with his best mate, who had the same make and model, I was there as bike candy. (He was good looking, could skate and jive really well, so it wasn’t a wasted two months). My helmet was an old army surplice one painted blue but too big, with this I wore a yellow plastic jacket with furry collar and tight tartan trews. (It was a time before teenagers had fashion). We seemed to go for miles into the New Forest and back stopping off at a transport café where they talked to other petrol heads, ignoring us while we tried to look casual. The ‘romance’ didn’t last, especially as he would always meet me

My next outing on a bike was when just married in 1965 visiting the relatives on a smallholding in Norfolk, one of the cousins had built a track bike and asked if I would like to have a go, not wishing to look like a ‘townie’, said, ‘Yes’. They didn’t tell me how to brake, only where the throttle was, I took off and managed to turn round and come back and then realised I didn’t know how to stop, so putting on a brave face, I took my hands off everything, waved in panic, it slowed down and I fell off unharmed with the reputation of being ‘good fun’. Next time on a pillion was when the garage mechanic in the 90s, who was forever waiting for parts for my ‘Yugo 500’, took me back to work on his ‘Honda Gold Wing’ with speakers in the helmet and a pillion like a sofa! Pity work was only 5 minutes away! Back to the ‘Reunion’. We met before dawn, for the trip to Cordoba, my mate loaned me a jacket that no longer fit him, his daughter’s helmet and I had my own black leather boots. Off we went in the dark, down the hill and it was very comfortable on the back. I became totally relaxed and as dawn broke, enjoyed the ride. We stopped for breakfast and petrol and as casually as possible, with a leg that had gone stiff, I struggled to

climb off the ‘Yamaha Dragstar Cruiser’ tugging at the top of my boot in order to pull my leg over the pillion! On the approach to Cordoba, the road split we, and a couple of other bikes turned one way, and the all the others straight on. Neither of us had any idea of where the venue was, nor the number for ‘El Presidente’, so we all pulled into at a layby to get our bearings, then following the other two bikes looking for signs, we lost them in the traffic. No signs were spotted so we stopped and I had a bright idea, why not follow anyone on a bike because it was a really big event and they were bound to be going! That decided, we did the perimeter of Cordoba without success, arriving at our original layby, and decided to head for home. Then we spotted three bikes, so off we followed and at the third set of traffic lights they gave us an

enquiring look and asked if they could help? We asked if they were off to the reunion, ‘no’, was the reply, ‘off to eat’ and with that the lights changed and they turned. Just then I saw the small sign, we followed arriving too late to join the procession around the town, which hadn’t been gone for that long. (How the devil we had missed all those bikes it is a mystery). We paid our fee and got a voucher for food and drink, and sat with the few who hadn’t gone, then went round the stalls which were selling everything you didn’t know you wanted, and so I bought a pink cowboy hat I didn’t need. When the bikes returned, the protocol was to admire each and every shiny bike, before the awards. One of the awards was for the oldest rider. It was won by a cool looking guy lolling in a chair near us, in a Harley Bandana, sporting a droopy

moustache, wearing leathers and looking like an extra from an old 1969 film. When his name was called, (seventy-two, I think he was), he had trouble getting out of the chair owing to his arthritis, I guess years of riding in allweathers on a bike had taken its toll, and so he walked like a cowboy, bandy and slow, probably in pain, to get his award. But when astride his ‘Harley’ easy rider style bike, he looked ten years younger, and on the way home he passed us like a flash and we weren’t going that slow. It was a good experience, even though my legs ached next day, and one I had once more before my friend’s wife joined in the fun. Before lockdown I regularly rode with my friend on her Quad from Competa to Canillas, not far, but what a feeling. Pink hat went on my OZ adventure, so I did need it.

ow that we can see an end to the Covid-19 lockdowns, albeit in the coming months, you may be considering putting your property on the market for sale. We expect (and hope) that people will start to be allowed to travel during the months of May/June. If this happens then we also expect a large influx of clients wanting to view properties. Our numbers of enquiries have continued to be high during the latest lockdown period, with many clients intending to visit as soon as they are allowed. So now might be the perfect time to list your house for sale in readiness for those clients arriving. We have been in the real estate business for almost 20 years, 17 of those years with Sunset Properties Spain. So, after many years' experience we have a few hints and tips for effectively marketing your property:1. Make sure that you have the right paperwork in place. Your estate agent, among other things will check that your escritura is up-to-date. Remember that if you have had any extensions built

onto your house or a swimming pool added you will need to update the description of the property in the escritura. For country houses you may also need a topographic survey of your land to establish the correct boundaries. 2. Sales price Think realistically about how much you want for your house. Check out comparable properties for yourself, but also take your estate agent's advice as she knows the market better than anyone. 3. Costs Know what your selling expenses are likely to be. Then you won't get any nasty surprises when you go to the notary to sign for the sale. It's important to know what you are likely to receive at completion, then you can accept an offer knowing what your costs will be. 4. Presentation I am sure all of you know by now the importance of good presentation. We have watched Phil Spencer and others on the TV telling us how to make our homes more presentable for selling. But

sometimes we can get used to where we live and forget to see the house through buyers eyes. Don't forget to:ž de-clutter, putting away as many of your personal things as possible ž freshen up the walls and paintwork if they are looking a bit 'tired'. ž make your outside spaces beautiful and inviting. We are selling sunshine and outside living, so this part of your house needs to be even more attractive. You can always ask a friend to look at your house as though they were a prospective buyer and ask for their honest opinion. 5. Marketing your property for sale When we market your property for sale we advertise widely. our street games and taught us to count in Arabic. There were plenty of children around, downstairs was Poppi, she was older than me, and Marki, he was my age, and whilst they attended the International school, I was bused to the Army Garrison school learning rude songs from the ‘Squaddie’ bus escorts ensuring I had a mixed vocabulary of several languages! A couple of afternoons a week in the Summer we, with another family, would go to the Bay of Suez to swim and cool off, there were only steps to sit on, but we would picnic and the Mums would gossip. If anyone is wondering if I have a memory of an elephant, no, I have photos taken with a Brownie Box that I refer to; Mum wrote on the back of most of them and I still have the camera.

AN EGYPTIAN EXPERIENCE Part Two

e stayed about six months in Ismailia in the compound and I recovered my health and started enjoying going to RAF Fayed which was on the edge of the Great Bitter Lakes and the forces had a beach there with all the facilities, unlike the chilly beaches of home which still bore traces of fortifications and barbed wire in the sand. Mum sat with other mothers whilst we children were looked after by a ‘lifeguard’ (conscript with a certificate). We were warned about sharks and jelly fish, which we saw in the distance, the jelly fish were blue and looked like balloons but the only ones I saw up close were dead on the shore. Once I caught a sea horse in my shrimping net! Then came the posting to RAF Saluffa, which was the largest base situated at the Southernmost part of the’ Canal Zone.’ We lived in Port Tewfick, (now called Port Tawfiq) 4k from Suez Town. Our

flat by today’s standards was basic, but to us it was total luxury. Situated in an old terraced house, we had the upstairs flat with a lounge and a small balcony, a bedroom which I shared, sleeping behind a curtain, a small kitchen and toilet, with the shared bathroom downstairs and a courtyard with a washhouse. The office workers for the Suez Canal Company were our neighbours, Italian and French on either side and a Greek family in the bottom flat called Mimi and Marigoula. The name of the street was in French and my Mum was dying to let her sister know how posh we had become, but we were still BFPO Malta for security! The only Egyptians I knew were Fatima the shared cleaner and her young son, the laundry workers, (Dad had his shirts professionally laundered), bus and taxi drivers. Her son helped her with the chores, until us children came home from school in the early afternoons and then he joined in

I learned a lot about living abroad, the flies, cockroaches ants and once coming home from school to find a priest with a huge beard, long hair, wearing a tall black hat and a black robe, swinging incense around in one hand and in the other flicking water and mumbling, and I raced upstairs to tell Mum, ‘There’s a man sloshing water over the flat’, she told me they were Greek Orthodox and the priest was blessing the house. I wondered if he was killing bugs. Another time, leaning over the balcony I saw the chicken seller pulling a cart of live chickens, he stopped outside and haggled with a customer, they came to an agreement and he slit the chicken’s throat, threw it on the ground where it ran round in gory circles. I asked if we could have one but Mum was squeamish and said ‘No, we get ours from the NAFFI ready butchered’! I don’t think we were particularly religious but we spent a lot of time at the C.of E. in Suez where we joined many activities, Mum helping with the Youth Club and the Young Wives, me in the Choir twice a Sunday and on a Saturday for the occasional wedding and also the Brownies. After church if

Dad was with us, we would wander round Suez and end up in a café where I always had a Sundae. Weekdays, if we needed to go to Suez instead of using the infrequent Army bus or a taxi, we used the local bus, invariably ending up catching a flea from the crowds of women dressed in black and a few men in grubby gallabiyahs resulting in the evening ‘flea hunting’ if a blood spot was found on the bedding. Sundays we used a taxi! The camp was situated on the edge of the Desert and we travelled there a lot by Army bus or train where I swam in the pool and watched films at the outdoor cinema, once seeing Red Shoes, not a suitable film for a child! The cinema was covered in the Winter and us children sat cross-legged on the floor watching Bambi and Dumbo over and over again. Mum loved dancing and so we went to the regular Mess dances where conscripts were roped in to dance with NCOs wives whilst the men stood at the Bar and children were ‘babysat’ by other airmen, probably why I saw so many films. I have a photo of Christmas Day standing in a deserted parade ground with a young boy and an airman squinting at the sun on our way to see the 32 Fighter Squadron planes, whilst the high jinks went on in the Mess, not your traditional Christmas Day entertainment! In the days before TV families would go out for an evening stroll and it was the same for us. We walked along the leafy banks of the Canal five minutes from the flat, which overlooked the Sanai Peninsula and at the end of the walk there were seats looking out to sea along with a huge bronze statue of Ferdinand De Lesseps, the Canal engineer, pointing out to the rest of the world. Back from there along the edge of the Canal there were workshops behind fences and then further back heading towards Suez, the International workers had their own beaches constructed to look like home, and a few times we got

invited to the Greek beach, it had had a blue and white tiled underground changing room with showers and I remember wondering why you had to shower before going into the sea! Marigoula and her unmarried sister sometimes invited Mum for afternoon sewing sessions and they taught her to make Greek lace, and in exchange Mum chaperoned the sister to afternoon or early evening activities, (‘A most unsuitable chaperone’, Dad said). I remember going with them to the afternoon Tea Dances, all ribbons, bows and dancing shoes, I could ballroom dance and so had partners, how insufferable I must have been! I had two holidays, one in 1950 staying in Port Said with Mimi’s large family. Mum took me by train and I stayed a couple of weeks whilst she was in Hospital loving every minute, the food, the fun of a large family, a floodlit basketball match and eating a chapati from a street vendor on the way home. The following year’s holiday, was in Cairo in an Hotel, and we took a taxi to the Pyramids and Sphynx, with the driver as our guide, there were no other visitors just us standing by the paw. Then on to the pyramids stopping at the smallest, where there were a few people waiting for a guided tour, no slick operation this, just a man with a lamp who we followed up a musty, rickety staircase, Mum panicked, we left. The Mohamed Ali Mosque was all gold and the Cairo Museum was full of Mummies and preserved hearts. I learned about child beggars, shoe shine children, real dirt and smells and the horror of being spat on. Egyptians really wanted British out, and it all started October 16th 1951. The troops in Ismailia were fighting looters, some of which were the police, five British soldiers were killed and nine Egyptians, we were hurriedly moved to a camp under canvas but Dad was not with us. We shared with other Mums and children a large circular tent where

we stayed until November as the camp gradually emptied. ‘It will be cold in England; you will need, a new coat and shoes’, Mum was back with the trusty Jones machine and knitting needles. The shoes were hand made by a local cobbler and we were escorted to the workshop, smelling of leather. You could get shoes from the NAFFI, but Mum forever the snob had to have ours handmade! The thick wool material along with skeins of wool were send from Wallsend via BFPO and again, material was available locally, but not the quality of Bainbridge, Newcastle. The coat was made, also the itchy hat, mitts on elastic and scarf, so we were ready to join Dad and other families on an uneventful journey on the troopship HMS Dilwarra. Docking in Southampton at Cunard’s Dock was exciting, the Queen Mary was also docked and as we pulled alongside our top deck was abreast of her bottom deck and she was huge. November in Southampton is not cold, so I asked, ‘Can I take’? ‘NO’ ‘Just the hat’? ‘NO, this is England’. So, I suffered, not in silence! We disembarked via the Cunard Lounge, with all the Mums gasping at the luxury, whilst pulling us along to the Terminus station for Waterloo. Apparently the 1,000 service families from Ismailia were evacuated initially, the first ship into Southampton made Pathe’ News. On reaching Newcastle, I was glad of that coat and wore it all that snowy NE Winter!

las, would that we could as before. Like nearly everyone else the pandemic ground most of our activities to a halt. While we could still care for animals in foster care and in kennels and take absolute emergency cases, it's been bread and water this year.. And none of the fun stuff like our annual dog show Scruffs. Or other events like the the Easter tea, the Holiday Ball and most of quiz nights had to be cancelled. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is limited in our resources and can only take on what our budget can handle. One thing we know is that an animal charity, or any charity for that matter, cannot allow itself to fall into debt. It's nearly impossible to climb out of that hole. So for now we do the most that we can to soldier on. And there are occasions when we simply have to turn down a request, to sterilise homeless cats, for example, or transport an adopted animal abroad.

Hopefully after Easter or perhaps later this summer, we can begin in-person fundraisers which combined with more shop activity, coin tins, sponorships and donations have helped us to avoid the deep end. oses still rank as our favourite flower. They have been around for some 35 million years and yet we have given them the reputation of being difficult and prone to disease. If that were really true, how come they've survived, and thrived, for so long? They have had to be tough and

adaptable to go through all the upheavals and climate changes of our world; a disease-ridden prima donna would never have made it. But, if we look back, it's only in the last hundred years or so that rose problems have arisen and that aligns with when we start breeding and hybridising them – so, we are to blame! In our search for new colours, uniform shape, we created the 'perfect' hybrid tea

more natural life and chemical-free becomes possible. 'Bad' insects aren't always all that bad, some are very beautiful and important for other reasons. Mix in a few 'goodies' and get a natural balance – that's what we need to aim for. Don´t strive for perfection; is it really worth spraying toxic chemicals around because your rose leaves have a few holes in them? The rose breeders are slowly waking up to a world of roses that are more disease-resistant instead of perfect in form. That many of us do not want to use chemicals on our favourite flowers. So, instead of falling for a pretty face, dig deeper and source roses that are good for our climate region; ones that are happy in hot sun and drought-resistant – they exist and many of them have very pretty faces too! Choosing the wrong rose, means that you will be constantly battling against nature. Roses are sociable, they like companionship. In the wild you'll see them mixing with trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, tubers and bulbs. They don´t want a diet of synthetic chemical fertiliser, far more important to improve the soil. Think forest floor, the constant rain of falling leaves that rot away, and try to emulate that. Adding an organic manure will help to get the process started, then apply a thick mulch annually, which also helps retain moisture and inhibits weed growth. Top up the mulch annually in springtime, but don´t disturb the soil and you'll start to see the difference in two or three years. A strongly-growing rose will stand up to greenfly, spider mite and black spot with the help of its companion plants. Companion plants are important, mix many of them through your rose beds. The best are those that encourage insects, not deter them. We want pollinators and predators, that's the way nature is. Interplant with low growers, those that will tower above and some

that will scramble. Here are a few ideas to make your roses rock and roll. Group them to make them billow and flow. Lavender, catmint, a froth of lady's mantle (alchemilla mollis) and the daisies – echinacea, osteospermum, rudbeckia, gaillardia, helenium, cosmos and our simple margaritas. These all have wide insect appeal. Mix them with bellshaped favourites of bees, such as foxgloves, campanulas and penstemons. Classic butterfly plants are monarda, asclepias, achillea and buddleja. Tall-growing umbels are part of nature – the carrot family with flat white umbels, the yellow of flowering dill and mix through purple top, the towering verbena bonariensis. Let some of your annual herbs go to seed (then you'll have plants for next year) and insects love cilantro, chamomile and basil flowers. Perennial herbs such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, chives and sage are well-known for their insect power. Plant, at least, three companion plants to every rose bush. And a few dainty scramblers such as the smaller growing clematis or dipaldenia look pretty draped through everything. Roses are best watered with a trickle irrigation system. Do not use sprayers or splash water around when watering manually, this will only encourage fungal diseases. Deep watering will encourage deep rooting and a much more sustainable garden. Use tough heritage roses – apothecary, noisette, China, bourbon, damask, single gallica, rugosa roses and other classics. They are our history of roses from pre-breeding and pre-chemical days, they've already stood the test of time. Then carefully select more modern breeds bred for resilience. Species or wild roses, of which there are about 300 worldwide, are those that have been growing wild for thousands of years, they are some of the toughest, often

single-flowered with a short bloom time. Our modern-day ramblers descend from them, with a fabulous spring-flowering but no repeat. Old roses and heirloom roses are those introduced prior to 1867. They are lush and fragrant, seen in many of the old masters' paintings. There are hundreds, many being suitable for warm climates. Modern hybrid roses, tens of thousands of them, have been introduced since 1867. The hybrid tea roses, with large single heads on a strong upright stem, are the most popular hybrid. The rugosas are some of the toughest but also the most beautiful with spiny-clad branches to ward off animal predation, silken flowers and big fat hips through winter. They are happy on poor ground and in harsh climates, disease and insect resistant and are often heavilyscented. They make a fine intruder-proof hedge, good windbreak and are great for erosion prevention. Native to Japan and Korea, they will also do well in warm, humid coastal conditions where other roses might struggle. Unlike dog roses which bloom fleetingly, the rugosas repeat flower over a long period. As well as looking fabulous, roses have a long history of medicinal use and every part is used except the thorns. Rose leaf tea has more antioxidants than green tea; rose petal honey is beneficial for sore throats and coughs and rosehips are a strong source of vitamin C to combat colds. Even rose roots are used in compresses to reduce swelling. Let's bring roses back into our lives, naturally!

HEINEKEN BEER FACTORY The Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto , presided over the inauguration of the first zeroemission beer factory in Spain last month in Jaén and the largest in Europe. The plant, which is started up in the Jaen brewery of La Imora, as explained by the director of Corporate Relations of Heineken in Spain, Carmen Ponce , is the only one in Spain that works exclusively with one hundred percent renewable energy.The president of Heineken Spain, Guillaume Duverdier , assured that they have never “stopped thinking and acting green, because we only have one planet”. The plant avoids the emission into the atmosphere of 2,500 tons of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to the average consumption of 2,500 homes, and has involved an investment of 1.4 million euros.n addition, he pointed out that they have an ambitious sustainability agenda, since they have proposed "to be the greenest brewery in Spain, starting with this factory in Jaén, promoting sustainable energies", with the aim that by 2025 all its brewing plants have zero emissions EUROPA COMPLEX IN TORRE DEL MAR. The Deputy Mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, and the

Mahon Cheese Mahon cheese has a distinctively fruity cheese is named for the major town of the island of Menorca.

Traditionally Cabrales gourmet cheese is made with a mixture of cow, sheep and goat milk; the locals say that cow's milk acidifies the cheese.

Local farmers have been making cheese here for centuries but its reputation rests on the skill of the local experts who collect the young cheeses from the producing farms. They then proceed to ripen them in underground cellars for two months to two years.

This is one of the finest blue cheeses in Spain offering different types of flavours depending on the type of milk used. The humidity level in the caves is around 90% with a temperature between 8 and 12C. the environment necessary to promote the growth of penicillin spores which gives the cheese is green patches and blue veins. The ripening stage in the caves lasts between 2 and 5 months, the cheese is regularly cleaned and turned during that time.

During the maturity process, butter paprika and olive oil are often rubbed onto the rind.

Galicia is made from the milk of cows grazing on the lush pastures behind the coastal mountain ranges. The cheese is made from pasteurised cow's milk and has a yellow rind and is creamy and slightly salty in flavour. The milk used for the production comes from well known breeds such as Frisians, Alpine Browns and Rubia Gallega. Afuega'l pitu Afuega'l pitu means fire in the throat because its concentrated taste gives a hot sensation as if it sticks to the back of your throat.

This cheese is quite dense in texture with a salty buttery taste and is often eaten with olive oil, tarragon and black pepper.

The young version of this gourmet cheese has a milky flavour and is medium-soft in texture, it is also smooth with some granular structures.

ebruary is a great month for planting trees, and we've got some that are a far cry from the normal! I'm going to give you some details on three that have trumpetshaped flowers and are stunningly wow in flower – the golden trumpet tree, pink trumpet tree and golden pagoda tree. And, finally, a real toughie for those very difficult areas that most of us have! Tabebuia is a genus containing around 100 species. The word tabebuia means ant wood in Brazilian, as ants often nest in the dead hollow branches of old trees. They are part of the Bignoniaceae family which gives you a hint of their blowsy beauty to come and they can be seen in yellow, pink, white and, rarely, red. They are commonly planted

through southern and central America as street and garden trees and certainly rival the jacaranda for flowering. Semi-evergreen, tabebuias will commonly shed their leaves for a short time in late spring, just before flowering. They are generally of a moderate growth rate and can even be grown in a pot whilst young. Eventually, in the ground, they can reach 8m high with a large spread too, so you get a big head and great impact. They like warm climates but will adapt well to poor soils and their roots are non-invasive. A windy position will slow their growth rate. On all types, the flowers are rich in nectar; pollinating insects make a beeline for them! Tabebuia (syn. handroanthus) ochracea, or golden trumpet tree

is famed for its spectacular display of large yellow flowers. It is very closely related to tabebuia chrysotricha, which is the national tree of Brasil. The bark is rough and furrowed and the new young leaves emerge with white downy undersides. The gorgeous golden-yellow flowers last only a day but they are prolifically produced with, occasionally, a second flush too and the dangling seed pods are decorative in their own right. Tabebuia (syn. handroanthus) impeteginosa is also known as pink lapacho, Pau D'Arco or pink trumpet tree. It is the national tree of Paraguay and is seen in huge pink clouds throughout southern Mexico, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina. It will tolerate windy coastal positions but does perform better in a cosier spot! The flowers are usually rosy-pink

with a yellow throat, though they can also have lilac tinges. The bark is well-used by native peoples for a range of treatments, most famously cancer but also for intestinal problems, fevers, dysentery, snake bites, to help with diabetes and lower blood pressure. It has strong antiinflammatory properties and immune stimulating activity. Sophora microphylla 'Sun King' commonly known as the Japanese pagoda tree, is a hybrid from Chile. More commonly seen as an arching shrub which can be wall-trained, it also makes a delightful small tree, where its flowers can dangle nicely. Unless very cold, it will be evergreen with dark green foliage, divided into 40 pairs of small, oblong leaflets, rather lacy and delicate looking. Being small leaved, it can be pruned and trained, perhaps as a fan against

a wall, and makes a good bonsai plant. It's a lovely thing and far more interesting and tropical looking than forsythia and winter jasmine, which flower at the same time, February through to April. The large luscious bell-shaped flowers are an exceptionally vivid yellow with tinges of green, waxy and exotic, with prettily protruding anthers. Although exotic looking, it tolerates exposure well and average soil. It will reach 4m x 3m spread.

MARIJUANA RAID National Police, within the framework of a medium-scale operation against drug trafficking, have dismantled two large marijuana plantations installed in two houses in Vélez- Málaga. The police operation began when the police were aware of constant power outages on Tapia de la Cruz Street. This data made them think about the possible existence of a marijuana plantation in a house on the aforementioned street. The police verified that in that street there were two houses with a double connection to the public electricity network. In addition, in the vicinity of these homes there was a loud noise from machinery and an odour that gave away the illegal activity that could be taking place inside. As a result of the searches carried out in the two properties, the police located in one of the houses 495 marijuana plants already in bloom and in the other property another 200 plants, collected and dried, ready for their container and distribution.
