Editors Note..... July and August are great months to party! As I am writing this we are leading up to the Cómpeta Feria which is 4 nights of music, fairground rides and stalls lasting to the early hours of the morning. One night of the feria is enough for me but the kids would go every night and for the young adults of the area it is what they look forward to each year. Whilst talking to one mum from the Cómpeta she explained her teenage daughters have bought four different outfits, shoes and bags for each feria night. It seems the preparation for the weekend is as big as the nights themselves. At least I have been pre warned what is in store as my eight year old daughter grows up! In August we have the Night of The Wine in Cómpeta, Noche Del Vino. This is a great day and evening starting with a market, free food and drink in the Plaza Vendimia and then celebrations move to the Plaza Almijara for dancing and singing into the early hours. We have provided information on the event itself and all the shops, bars and restaurants in the area. So if you come up to Cómpeta for the event you know where to go, eat and drink.

Weird and Wonderful from around the world! A woman was caught trying to smuggle her husband out of a Mexican prison in a suitcase, it has emerged. Maria del Mar Arjona, 19, was stopped after the guards at the jail in Chetumal saw her acting nervously and struggling with the heavy suitcase on wheels. They opened the bag and found her husband Edwin Valdemar Artiaga Perez inside - wearing only socks and pants. The husband was returned to his cell after last week's jailbreak attempt. Ms Arjona had been at the prison in the eastern Quintana Roo state for a conjugal visit with her husband, and therefore had been allowed to take the suitcase inside, officials said. She was only stopped as she attempted to leave through the main door of the building. Her husband - who is reportedly serving a 20-yearold jail term for various unspecified crimes was found curled up inside the bag. Ms Arjona, who is pregnant, was also detained by the authorities, reports say. A US businessman has been rewarded for his loyalty to one single airline company after accumulating 10 million air miles. Thomas Stuker, a sales consultant, reached the milestone after a flight from Los Angeles to Chicago. He has boarded 5,962 United Airlines flights and flown the equivalent of 400 times around the globe. As a reward he will never have to queue at airports, always get upgraded and has even had a plane named after him. Mr Stuker reached the milestone after arriving to his native Chicago and it has taken him 19 years to accumulate his first five million miles and another 10 years to double the mileage. "So we figure that we're going to be here in five years when you hit 15 million miles, because you're cutting it in half every time," Martin Hand, United's Vice-President of Customer Experience, was quoted as saying by NBC. Before boarding

Mr Stuker has now enough reward points through the airlines' frequent flyer programme to take several foreign holidays a year assuming he can find the time. A few years ago George Clooney played the role of a man who had achieved the same feat in the film Up In The Air. The maternal ancestors of modern polar bears were from Ireland, according to a DNA study of ancient brown bear bones. Scientists in the UK, Ireland and the US analysed the teeth and skeletons of 17 brown bears that were found at eight cave sites across Ireland. The new research has been reported in the latest edition of Current Biology. Previously, it was believed that today's polar bears were most
closely related to brown bears living on islands off the coast of Alaska. However, analysis of mitochondrial DNA - which is passed from mother to child - has shown the extinct Irish brown bears are the ancestors of all today's polar bears, the scientists said. Their work provides evidence of the two species mating opportunistically during the past 100,000 years or more.

What's in my Man Drawer? he comedian Michael McIntyre has a very funny sketch regarding his 'man drawer', a drawer that every home house filled with dead batteries, mysterious bits of plastic and various ephemera (if you have not seen the sketch, it is on YouTube, so give it a watch).
third of our electrical items still have UK plugs on. Despite this fact I can never find an adaptor when I need one. 'Change UK plugs' needs to be moved up the “to do” list.
So what is in my man drawer and what does this say about me? 1 x Roll-on deodorant (almost empty). I can only assume this was “tidied away” by my wife whilst I had it in transit to the toiletry drawer upstairs. The fact that the label the bottle boasts 'Dryness for 24-hours' shows it must be fairly old; a TV commercial on at the moment advertises a deodorant that keeps you “fresh” for 72-hours. The advert might as well say “Hey, teenage boys, now you only need to shower twice a week”. Mind you judging by the odour of some people rather than developing a deodorant that covers your smell for days, they should have developed one that gives an audible warning to the wearer that it has worn off as some people seem oblivious to the fact that they whiff.
1 x opened packet of tissues (made in Slovenia) I have no idea. But the next time a Slovenian with a runny nose comes round, at least I have a plan.

1 x Romeo y Julieta Cuban cigar. I purchased this cigar in Cuba about 10 years ago. Although I am not a smoker I still wanted to see the factory, I can report however, the cigars are not rolled on the thighs of virgins. Even though the cigar is probably drier than a UK reservoir I will keep it as I like the silver tube it is in. 2 x pairs of City Sightseeing earphones (red). You are not very often given things for free, so although I will probably never use them again I cannot bring myself to throw them away. Actually I have just noticed that the foam has started to rip. That said I still cannot throw them, so back in they go. 1 x pen with 'Andy Blake motor vehicle

engineering' embossed on it. This pen looks quite nice but a bit like the one that comes in a gift pack with a pair of cufflinks, a bottle opener, a letter opener, a cigarette lighter and some matching golf tees (like the ones the mayor of Cümpeta gave away recently). The nib of the pen slides back inside the body of the pen when you write so, one for the bin I think. I must say that Andy Blake had better mechanic abilities than he did choosing pens to give to his customers. 1 x spirit drinks measure. Like we would ever need that in Spain! Maybe from a cracker, it might come in useful one day so back in it goes. 1 x “Bullseye in you pocket” phrase player. When one of the 6 buttons on this device is pressed, it says classic phrases from the 1980's darts-based quiz Bullseye such as “now you've won nothing, but here's your BFH – your bus fare home”. And we think TV these days is terrible. Hilarious for about 3 minutes, it was a gift so I cannot part with it. 1 x King Edward cigar. What is going on here? I own 2 cigars. I can only imagine that somebody gave this to me at the birth of their child. Now ld”

I think we have some UK coins in about 15 places in our house, totalling about £2.50 at a guess, so not even enough to buy a pint in a UK pub. You cannot throw money away though can you? I read on the BBC website last month that there is 1.7 billion euro worth of pesetas unaccounted for in Spain following the introduction of the Euro in 2002. Some of it is in my drawer – about 250 pesetas of it. So, what have we discovered about me? I am a poor, slightly untidy hoarder with a very long 'to do' list. Yep, that sounds about right!

Wayne Newman
T
his month I met Wayne Newman founder of CompetaArt.com to talk this time about his own work. I met him at his house at the top of the village in Cómpeta where he had on display some of his first works such as glass coasters, dishes , wall decorations and also a fantastic glass table top. Wayne explained that his work started with one dimensional creations using Tiffany glass. However it wasn’t long before he looked for a different way of creating. He wanted to move onto 3D creations and therefore needed to experiment with different glass and he also bought a glass oven to experiment with melted glass and glass fusion. Wayne describes himself more of an experimentalist than an artist, never making the same piece twice and developing new ideas and sculptures all the time. For instance, he explained he wanted to make a water fountain using glass, LED lights and Photo Vortic tiles. The tiles would create enough voltage to power the water pump and LEDs to allow the sculpture to light up at night. Wayne also talked about an idea where he would put little light bulbs inside marbles creating a different ambience. As I talked to Wayne his enthusiasm for his work and limitless ideas shone through. As soon as he had finished telling me about one idea he was onto the next! His work shop was full of different materials and of course his special oven which he fuses the glass in. It was interesting to see the how the glass changes through his process, firstly working out what colour and type of glass to use to make the sculpture, melting it in the oven and then seeing the final piece produced. The following 3 pictures show this interesting process well. Wayne is originally from America where he has attended courses on metal welding and the use of

glass and wood. This knowledge and the different types of materials Wayne works with leads him to create some fabulous pieces. In fact, Wayne explained he wasn’t able to show me as much of his pieces as he would have liked. He had sold quite a few of them recently to people leaving Cómpeta looking for individual and different presents . Wayne founded CompetaArt and has enjoyed the bringing together of Artists and craftsman of different nationalities in the area. However, he is keen to continue further his intercultural work to involve the local school, singing groups and to integrate further with the Spanish and their local art groups. Wayne loves living in Cómpeta and feels very settled here. Although he was quick to admit just because he speaks English doesn’t always mean he understands some of the England English phraseology and likewise the English don’t always ‘get’ him. There is certainly a different culture between the English and Americans which has led to some misunderstandings along the way. Wayne has lived a varied life coming from the US, spending 6yrs on a house boat then travelling round North America and Europe on a motorbike where he met his wife in northern Spain and then they came to settle here. Wayne is full of enthusiasm for his work and Cómpeta and was an interesting man to meet. If you would like to see more of his work go to www.competaArt.com

n Sunday, 3rd July, the Balcon Hotel in Competa was the venue for the second VivoAid gala evening. Some 300 people enjoyed a wonderful evening of food, dance and music under the stars on the pool terrace at this beautifull location. The show was hosted by Hanna Murray from Talk Radio Europe and the Mayor of Competa, Jose Luis Torres Gutierrez, opened the proceedings with a welcome speech. First to perform was the childrens flamenco dance group "Aromas de Albaida". The group, made up of children from the ages of 4 years to 9 years of age, enchanted the audience with their performance and were a wonderfull opening act. Next on stage were "Al Compass" a trio of young students from Competa, Isabel, Marta and Raffa, who performed a selection of popular Spanish songs to the delight of the audience, in particular the large Spanish contingent. Without doubt the stars of the dancing section of the show were Grupo Salaria, a belly dance troup from the village of Salares, who brought the crowd to their

feet( particularly the men!!!) and returned to dance two encores. What a treat! Next up were "Acoustic Roots" who performed a selction of their ever popular songs and had the crowd up and dancing and "warmed up" ready for the final group "Guiri". As ever this fantastic Rock, Blues and Reggae band had the people rocking in the aisles and dancing the night away untill 12.30 when the show closed. The evening was held in aid of Cudeca and Help for Heroes and a total of â‚Ź2,606 was raised to be divided equally between these charities. The show director, Roger Sparks, said after the event "the real stars of this show were all the people who attended and gave so generously to the Raffle and ticket sales. I understand that these are difficult times and I am overwhelmed by their kindness. I would like to say a heartfelt "thank you" to everyone who was there, the audience, the performers who gave freely of their time, and the numerous helpers. We will do this again".

New rules mean it will be easier and cheaper to travel abroad with pets
I
t will become cheaper and easier to travel abroad with pets when new rules are introduced at the start of next year. The UK will harmonise its pet movement rules with the rest of the European Union from 1 January 2012, bringing the UK's Pet Travel Scheme into line with the most recent science. The UK will maintain its high level of protection against animal diseases after the changes, which have the potential to save pet owners around £7 million in fees. Forcing pets to spend six months in quarantine, a practice dating from the 1800s, is no longer necessary because of vastly improved rabies vaccines and treatments. All pets will still need to be vaccinated against rabies. Pets from the EU and listed non-EU countries such as the USA and Australia will no longer need a blood test and will only have to wait 21 days before they travel. Pets from unlisted non-EU countries such as India, Brazil and South Africa will be able to enter the UK if they meet certain strict criteria to ensure they are protected against rabies, including a blood test and a threemonth wait before they enter the UK. The changes will ensure the risk of rabies coming to the UK remains extremely low. It's estimated that the new rules mean there would be one case of rabies in a pet in the UK once every 211 years, with the possibility of a person dying from rabies obtained from a pet once in every 21,000 years. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said: “The UK's quarantine system was designed to combat the threat of rabies in the 19th century and has now been left far behind by scientific advances. It's time we changed these outdated rules which have caused hardship to generations of pets and pet owners, and those who rely on assistance dogs, with too many animals cooped up unnecessarily.
recognises the actual risk to pets and pet owners. The EU's pet movement scheme has been working very well for nearly a decade, and it makes sense for us to have similar rules. It means the UK will remain protected from rabies and other exotic diseases while making it easier and cheaper for people to take their pets abroad.” The UK has been discussing with the European Commission the most appropriate form of tapeworm controls for dogs, to ensure the UK continues to be protected from Echinococcus multilocularis. The Commission has recently indicated that its proposals, expected shortly, would enable the UK and other tapeworm-free countries to retain tapeworm controls, with a requirement that animals be treated between one and five days before returning to the UK. Tick treatment for pet animals returning to the UK will no longer be required. All pet owners travelling abroad with their animals should discuss with their vets the use of treatments, including those designed to control ticks as part of good animal health practice. The UK, along with Ireland, Sweden and Malta, has an exemption from the standard EU pet travel rules. They are all harmonising their entry rules with the rest of the EU at the same time as the UK. More information can be found at http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2011/06/30/newrules-pet-passports/

Those Crazy Lazy Days of Summer. Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh.
L
ike us, some of our plants revel in the heat of summer whilst others wish they could move to cooler climes. Some have been hanging back, needing that wave of warmth before they will really kick into growth. These semi-tropicals grow away rapidly in an attempt to pack everything into a few short months. Many of these give us some of our most beautiful plants, often breathtakingly stunning. So I thought we’d have a look at two of the best. Pull your chair into the shade, fill up your glass and enjoy. One of the most beautiful is hibiscus schizopetalus – more evocatively known as Japanese lanterns, skeleton, fringed or coral hibiscus. It’s such a lovely thing! The Latin gives us a clue – schizo meaning split, and petalus meaning petal – but it’s the common names, as usual, that draw the picture. Each 7.5 cm flower dangles like a lantern, the irregularly fringed petals curve upward whilst the long stamen protrudes downwards. And it comes in glowing Japanese lantern-like colours, the most common being scarlet.
34 The Grapevine
Don’t be deceived into thinking it’s from Japan, for this is a native of tropical East Africa. It grows wild near the mangrove deltas where it can get a regular water supply and some shade. This is the trick if you want to grow hibiscus schizopetalus – it will not tolerate drought so keep it constantly moist, warm and in the dappled light under trees. Feed regularly during the growing season and you’ll soon have large plants. Hardy down to around zero, it can be grown in a large pot which could be given winter protection or, simply, grow it as an annual. It’s certainly worth it. Reaching 3m high with a 2m spread, it looks particularly mouth- watering when trained as a small tree, allowing its lanterns to dangle freely from the arching branches. The pendulous canopy is really fabulous. Try it trailing out of a very large hanging pot – wow! Prune regularly to train it into shape; it flowers on new wood so frequent trimming will produce more of those

lovely flowers. Problems? Well watch out for aphid attack and temperature fluctuations and irregular watering can cause bud drop. Another fabulous looker to add to our summer album has to be the frangipani, or plumeria. Nothing evokes a tropical feel more! Distinctive in any of its life phases – from its swollen grey finger-like branches in winter, through its rich green cloak of glossy leaves in early summer to its exotic long-lasting waxy flowers – this is a plant that will not be ignored. Not many plants look good all year round, and some would say the bareness of frangipani in winter is hard to live with, but I love it. Plant its ghostly branches with a white wall as a backdrop and its structural elegance will never disappoint. Over years it will become a huge gaunt giant! Natives of Central and South America, it is now naturalised throughout many semi-tropical parts of the world, being particularly common in Asia and the Pacific Islands. In several of the islands, the flowers are used for making traditional leis, or floral garlands. The flowers are used to indicate relationship status; a flower worn over the right ear means the woman is available, whilst, if worn over the left ear, they are already ‘taken’ – a little like the fan language of Andalucia! The genus, originally spelled plumiera, is named after the French botanist Charles Plumier. The common name of frangipani comes from an Italian nobleman, Marquis Frangipani, who created, during the 16th century, a perfume to scent his gloves. When the flower was later introduced into Europe, its perfume reminded people of the scented gloves and thus its common name. Frangipanis are, perhaps surprisingly, related to a plant we all know here – the oleander. Both possess a milky sap, in oleanders highly poisonous and in frangipanis very irritating and toxic to both humans and animals – though it is also used medicinally in various cultures. They are tough trees that can survive drought, heat and neglect - they won’t burn, even at 250C! However, they will perform better if fertilised regularly with an organic feed. Their root system is not aggressive, so they are ideal for small gardens or pots. Their only real enemy is wet feet!
To advertise call 637 028 873
The colour of the 5-petalled waxy flowers ranges from a wonderful dense white and yellow through all types of sunset shades – the vivid coppers and crimsons occurring naturally on plants closer to the equator. Which are the most fragrant type? Well, all are more powerfully scented at night when that fabulous perfume is wafted around to draw in their main pollinator, the sphinx moth. The flowers have no nectar and the moth flutters from one flower to another in frustration, pollinating as it goes! But probably the one with the most intoxicating perfume is plumeria rubra rubra. Smaller growing, the flowers are scarlet red and intensely scented. Plumeria rubra acutifolia bears white flowers with a deep yellow throat and long smooth pointed leaves. Both are deciduous and form a spreading, sparselybranched tree, around 4m x 4m. Plumeria alba has white scented flowers whilst the mainly evergreen plumeria obtusa bears pure white flowers, larger than in any other species, but it is very rarely seen here. Legend in many countries associates the plant with ghosts and demons, probably because of its extraordinary ability to produce leaves and flowers even when lying unplanted – a sure sign of immortality and devilry! In the language of flowers plumeria stand for love in absence – so get sending them far afield to your loved ones! Please remember, the garden centre is closed throughout August! Lorraine Cavanagh has lived in Spain for 25 years; a mother, grandmother and hispanófila, her passions are plants, the environment, food and drink, and travelling within Spain. C
alling all former Round Tablers! If you have been a member of one of the many Round Tables around the world, then why not find out more about your local 41 Club which has members from as far afield as just East of Malaga to Motril. The Association of Round Tablers exists in more than forty countries having started in Norwich in the UK some 84 years ago. It is an organisation of fellowship where members help others while having fun and enjoying new experiences. Round Table is now for men aged between 18 and 45. However, the upper age used to be 40 and that is how 41 Club was invented for ex Round Tablers wishing to continue the link and wanting to maintain the enjoyment and friendship that Round Table provides. You could call us the 'Golden Oldies' of Round Table.
and fellowship learned in Table comes to the fore! There are seven Clubs on the Iberian Peninsula namely Nerja, Estepona, Calpe, Javea, Mallorca, Gibralta and the Algarve Club in Portugal. We meet for a superb weekend of fun once a year and this is hosted in turn by all the Clubs. This year in October we will meet in Gibraltar. 41 Clubs motto is 'May the hinges of friendship never rust' and this certainly proves correct in our club. If you are an ex Round Tabler and would like more information please look at our website or ring Alfie. Website: www41clubnerja.org Tel: Alfie 626998626
Our Club was started in February 2004 by Troels Peterson and Ragnar Sandsten and has ex Tablers from many countries although the British are in the majority. Alfie Fornear, the new Chairman, joined Round Table in Keynsham aged 28 and found out that it was a wonderful way of meeting people. He found a new circle of friends by joining Round Table and this experience is being repeated now by joining our 41 Club. Alfie lives near Sayalonga and finds the trips to meetings are simple due to the motorway along the coast. Our Club meets twice per month on the first and third Thursdays. The first Thursday is called our 'Munch Bunch' meeting with our partners where we move around our catchment area trying 'menu del dia' at various restaurants. These normally occur at lunch time. Our meeting on the third Thursday is for the men however our ladies often go out for a meal on the same night. At this moment we meet at the Hotel Al-Andaluz in Maro next to the Caves of Nerja. Some of these evenings are shared with our ladies if we have a splendid speaker and on other evenings the fun

This summer I found myself heading into the unknown territory of Granada province. The Cómpeta town hall thought their local guides should know something of the lie of the land (not to mention history and culture) just beyond that upper contour line. Our first target, tucked into the natural park just past the town of Fornes was:
La Resinera La Resinera, The Old Factory

alking in the Sierra Almijara you passed thousands of pine trees. The most time-twisted or lightening-blasted might catch your eye, but you may have never noticed that hundreds, especially near tracks, have deep old groves in their trunks. These are the man-made marks of resin collection. Pine resin has been used as pitch for waterproofing wood ever since Noah built his ark. That makes these Sierras a good base: there's no shortage of pines! Unsurprisingly, resin collection has been practised here for centuries. At the very start of the 20th Century it was an industry. There was enough trade for processing plant La Resinera to be built, with (cheap) housing for workers, and a school and chapel built by the Union Resinera Española, an inn and

a big (expensive) house for the overseer. This site is now a Heritage Centre. The buildings and surrounding woods and hills are striking and you can easily walk up to the viewpoint – follow the sign “mirador” up a track opposite the main building. The main visitors centre is based within the old school and chapel. It has a “multi-media” room (though the film we saw was only stills), a small shop, some good leaflets and attractive displays that describing the natural park and the fascinating life and work of the resin collectors. It was tough work. Each “resinero” had a plot of around 5000 pines to tend. That meant clearing the ground in winter; collecting wood for the factory ovens; tapping the trees for the resin to leak, drop by drop into clay pots; slotting these

into wooden panniers on a mule saddle and taking them to the factory. They used a small axe to chip out the bark and the resin would run down the groove into the waiting clay pot nailed to the trunk. A sieve kept the resin clean, which increased its value. But the worker couldn't just make the cut, lie back and relax. The resin would flow for around six days, so for months the resinero would be revisiting the trees to make new chips: about 800 trees a day! Knowing when the tree was mature, how deep to cut, how much resin to extract was skilled enough but what baffles me is how they kept a tally of them without a map and database! Eventually synthetic alternatives began to compete. Workers were pressed to use the “pica de corteza” method, which involved a shallower cut treated with acid. This meant that the tree could eventually be sold as wood but the resineros hated it: the acid wrecked their hands and clothes.
year a forest fire near the factory destroyed 6,000 hectares of pine forest in six days: it was this disaster that closed the resin factory down. It's now an interesting place to visit and walk around. The overseer's house is still standing (though it could use some work!) but some buildings were pulled down to make the helipad for the massive Russian chopper used to put out forest fires. Apparently the pilot came from Russian with the helicopter; only the co-pilot is Spanish! You might like to walk to the centre from Fornes (or vice versa) – there are (some) way markers for this route: see www.juntadeandalucia.es and search Sendero La Resinera-Fornes. As with the entire natural park, the landscape is fabulously beautiful and a pleasure to walk through. It's a pity the centre is only open at weekends and holidays. But maybe if you and your friends visit they will expand on this! Rose Jones
I assumed that La Resinera was abandoned during the civil war, but it was actually open (if struggling) through to 1975. In August of that

Noche Del Vino 2011 August 15th - Cómpeta
ómpeta is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiesta's in Cómpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine! The event pays homage to the town's patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia's most important yearly events. In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional
activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food. Over 300 litres of oil will be on hand to prepare migas, the traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol. Cómpeta sees more than 1,500 litres of wine shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cómpeta. Below you will find the program for the day and evening. Please also turn over to find out what bars and restaurants are around to eat and drink in throughout the day.

The Ventriloquist A ventriloquist is touring the clubs and stops to entertain at a bar in a small town. He's going through his usual run of "dumb blonde" jokes, when a blonde woman in the 4th row stands on her chair and says: "I've heard just about enough of your stupid blonde jokes, ASSHOLE! What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What does a person's hair color have to do with them as a human being? It's guys like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in my community and from reaching our full potential...because you and your kind continue to perpetuate negative images against not only blondes, but women in general, all in the name of humor." Flustered, the ventriloquist begins to apologize, when the blonde yells, "You stay out of this Mister! I'm talking to that little bastard on your knee!

GOD - BUSTED!
AN AFFAIR?
After getting all of the Pope’s luggage loaded into the limo, the driver notices that the Pope is still standing on the curb. “Excuse me, Your Eminence,” says the driver, “would you please take your seat so we can leave?” “Well, to tell you the truth,” says the Pope, “they never let me drive at the Vatican, and I’d really like to drive today.” “I’m sorry but I cannot let you do that. I’d lose my job! And what if something happens?” protests the driver, wishing he’d never gone to work that morning. “There might be something extra in it for you,” says the Pope.
Dear Abby, I have never written to you before, but I really need your advice. I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs; phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with 'the girls' a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, just some friends from work, you don't know them.
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Supreme Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105 mph. “Please slow down, Your Holiness!!!” pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens. “Oh, dear God, I’m gonna lose my license,” moans the driver. The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio. “I need to talk to the Chief,” he says to the dispatcher. The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he’s stopped a limo going a hundred and five. “So bust him,” says the Chief. “I don’t think we want to do that, he’s really important,” says the cop. “I mean really important.” “Who you got there, the Mayor?” the chief asks. “Bigger. Bigger than the governor or everyone else for that matter,” says the cop. “Well, who is it?” asks the chief. “ I think it’s God!” says the cop. “What makes you think it’s God?” Cop answers: “He’s got the Pope for a limo driver!”

SHORT AND SWEET! I've been trying to buy a deaf sheepdog for 18 months now, and finally I managed to purchase one today... They're very hard to come by... Mirror installer? Now that's a job I could see myself doing every day! I couldn't sprint at school, I was more about patience and endurance... Which benefited me in the long run. I've been to an open evening at the local S+M club... Talk about popular!...I was beating them off with a stick!
I try to stay awake and watch for her when she comes home, but I usually fall asleep. Anyway, I have never broached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just did not want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to finally check on her around midnight, I hid in the garage behind my golf clubs so I could get a good view of the whole street when she arrived home from a night out with "the girls." When she got out of the car she was buttoning up her blouse, which was open, and she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them on. It was at that moment, crouching behind my golf clubs, that I noticed a hairline crack where the grip meets the graphite shaft on my Taylor Made 460 driver. Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the PGA Superstore? Signed... Concerned Golfer
I tried some bear meat for the first time last night... Didn't enjoy it though, it was gristly.... I saw an advert in the theatre for "The Dictionary"... I thought - now that's a play on words.

U3A EL MORCHE . The El Morche University of the Third Age has a variety of learning groups each with a leader. Groups meet regularly to learn in a friendly and enjoyable way. Covering an area from Rincon to Nerja and inland to Viñuela and beyond. We take part in debating, singing, photography, quizzes, walking, computing and much more. If you would like to know more, or have skills and knowledge you would like to share, contact us now at www.u3aelmorche.wordpress.com

The long distance walking path GR242 was signposted only a few months ago. This sendero de Gran Recorrido (GR) walks from Periana to Maro (Nerja) via Alcaucin, Canillas de Aceituno, Sedella, Salares, Canillas de Albaida, Cómpeta, Acebuchal and Frigiliana. This signpost will probably end in somebodies woodstove next winter. More signposts of the route might share the same fate, so walkers who want to do this GR will get lost easily. A group of volunteers of the Oficina de Turismo of Cómpeta intends to walk the GR242 in September/October and make a GPS track of the total GR. The Ayuntamiento of Cómpeta will provide the transportation, so no overnight stays are necessary. The total walking will take 3 – 4 days. After our walk we will give our GPS track + a description of the route in English and Spanish to the Ayuntamiento of Cómpeta, who can use it for the promotion of Cómpeta. Joost Schepel TORROX SQUATTERS NOT DISTURBING ANYONE Three families are squatting in abandoned and ruined public buildings in Torrox, according to the town hall. Residents nearby are defending their right to be there as they “aren’t disturbing anyone”.
SCUFFS IN NERJA The second of the Costa Animal Society's annual fun family dog shows, Scruffs Nerja, has been set for Saturday, September 17, and it will be bigger and better than ever. For the second year, and by kind permission of the town hall, it will be held on the site of Nerja's weekly market near the Almijara II urbanisation. As usual, the centre of attention will be the dogs themselves whose owners will be able to enter them in a number of different classes. Every pedigree and pooch is welcome to participate in the event, whether owned by a Spanish family or a foreign resident. The judging will be followed by entertainment from flamenco guitarist Mike Jingles, an Elvis Presley tribute act and deejay Kapt'n Party. In addition, there will be a bouncy castle and pony rides courtesy of Nerja Riding School.Last year, Scruff's Nerja raised over 2,000 euros for CAS funds. To find out about sponsoring one of the competitive classes and any other information about Scruffs Nerja, please call Mike on 699 948 993.

Local News PENSIONER ARRESTED FOR STABBING A MAN IN TORRE DEL MAR A 71-year-old man was arrested by National Police for allegedly stabbing another, aged 75, in the chest, after the two argued over a dominoes match at the ‘Pensioners’ Centre’ in Torre del Mar. SIX ARRESTED IN VELEZ MALAGA National police arrested six people charged with selling drugs from two houses located in the same street in VelezMalaga. The officers, in collaboration with VelezMalaga Local Police, set up surveillance outside the houses and once they had observed many people coming and going from the locations, they obtained a warrant to enter. They seized 24 grammes of pure cocaine, eight of heroin, several doses of marihuana, as well as precision scales, €2,370 in cash and pieces of jewellery. The detainees were aged between 29 and 39. Police continue to investigate where the jewellery had come from. TRAM SERVICE SAVED In an agreement reached between the Town Hall and the Travelsa company the tram service in Vélez Málaga has been saved. The council owes Travelsa more than 2 million € for its management of the service and has agreed to pay the debt off in instalments, in addition to increasing the tariff per fare it pays to the company to fund the purchase of a third tram.
TORROX BUSINESSES NO LONGER CAN OPEN WHEN THEY WANT. The freedom of opening hours for businesses in Torrox has been annulled by the Junta de Andalucia at the request of the business owners themselves. The freedom of opening hours over the Easter and summer periods was approved by the Junta in February 2009 until September 2012. However the Local Business Association (Asecot) came to an agreement with the town hall to request that it be annulled.
