We had a fantastic June as the kids went back to the UK with their grandparents and we went to Cadiz for a couple of nights and then onto Zahara de Atunes for another night. Zahara is a small fishing village with beautiful white sandy beaches. Both are great places, I would thoroughly recommend them. It was great to be able to relax, eat and drink when we want, wander around at leisure without the constant sound of mummy, daddy and I want! We of course did miss the kids but we would be happy for them to go back to the UK again next year.... hint, hint grandparents!! The Grapevine is going to run a photograph competition over the next few months. We would like you to send us your pictures which can be of anything to do with the local area or local people. We will upload them onto the Grapevine Facebook page and depending on the amount of likes you get (tell your friends!)will depend on if we print them or perhaps even put the photo on our front cover. Finally, feria’s and fiesta’s are still going on everywhere through the month of August perhaps we will see you at the Canillas de Albaida feria in the first weekend of August or at Noche del Vino in Competa on the 15th. This month’s magazine is packed with information on Noche del Vino and also contains many other articles about wine! Enjoy and keep reading (and looking for that wine glass!) The Editor

News in Spain A SURVEY FROM THE OCU SHOWS THE BEST PLACES TO LIVE ARE IN THE NORTH OF THE COUNTRY The Organisation of Consumers and Users, OCU, has carried out a study on where is best to live in Spain. They questioned more than 5,500 people at the end of 2011 and discovered 15 Spanish cities failed to reach a basic quality of life. It shows that 50% of the people who live in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville have seen their city get worse in recent years. The other city in the bottom four is Valencia. Also given a poor rating by its own residents we find Las Palmas, Palma de Mallorca, Badalona, Alicante, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Málaga, Murcia, Hospitalet de Llobregat, Granada, Vigo and Cartagena. However there are positive comments for the cities of Pamplona, Vitoria, Gijón, Bilbao and Logroño where it’s claimed there is the best quality of life. The survey revealed that unemployment and health are the main concerns of the population. GAY CRUISE PROHIBITED FROM MOROCCO GOES TO MÁLAGA It seems 1,500 homosexuals in the Casablanca Grand Mosque would have been too much. The ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ cruise liner has been diverted to Málaga port after the Moroccan Government refused permission to dock in Casablanca. The reason, most of the 1,564 passengers were gay. As Gay Pride marches were held in cities around the world, those on the cruise were told of the diversion to Málaga. El País reports one passenger, Eric from Washington, saying ‘I was in the hairdressers when the captain said over the megaphone that the visit to Casablanca had been cancelled for security reasons, and because the arrival of the liner had become a matter of public controversy. designed to help married men and women to have ‘a discrete adventure’, has launched the very first ‘Infidelity Olympics’. Spain had little problem beating the other countries, and obtained her first Gold Medal, in the Tantric Sex category. The other countries to compete were Canada, the United States, the UK, South Africa, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, Argentina and Colombia. ECONOMIC CUTS IVA/VAT is to go up from 18% to 21% and from 8% to 10%. The 4% rate remains unchanged. The VAT changes were to be brought in with the publication of the next BOE, but the Cabinet finally decided to postpone it to September 1. Some items are changing rates; glasses and contact lenses, cinema, hairdresser, discotheques, theatre, health products, funerals and cleaning services will move from 8% to 21%. The number of councillors in Town Halls is to be reduced by 30%, Civil servants and directors in administration will lose their extra payment at Christmas. Tax breaks buying a property will end from 2013. Unemployment pay will drop after the sixth month. The reduction after the sixth month is to 50% of the regulatory base from the current 60%, although unemployment pay entitlement will remain at 24 months. Most of the bonuses paid to employers for taking on workers will be removed. LAUGHING GAS Local Police in Puerto Banus, Marbella have intervened capsules of ‘laughing gas’ for the very first time on the Costa del Sol. 200 capsules were decomposed and a young Briton has been arrested as the alleged distributor. Local Police saw how siphons were being used by a woman in a bar in Puerto Banús to recharge the capsules, and after questioning her they found other women in Puerto Banús who were selling doses of laughing gas for 5 €.

A
German minister who sent home a big Afghan carpet free of charge aboard an intelligence service plane has drawn criticism from opposition politicians. A spokesman for Development Minister Dirk Niebel says the customs duty required for the carpet will be paid. Mr Niebel bought the 30kg (66-pound) carpet for himself in the Afghan capital Kabul, the Spiegel news website reports. It cost about $1,400 (ÂŁ907). Import duty was not paid when it arrived in Berlin last month. The opposition Social Democrats (SPD) have demanded an explanation from the minister. He is a member of the liberal Free Democrats (FDP), junior coalition partners with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats. Mr Niebel had left the 9 sq m (97 sq ft) carpet at the German embassy because he could not get it on a scheduled flight. Then the German foreign intelligence service (BND) offered to fly it back to Berlin as a favour, German media report.
A
huge dock torn from a Japanese port by the 2011 tsunami has washed up 8,050km (5,000 miles) away on the US West Coast after crossing the Pacific. The 165-tonne structure made of concrete, metal and tyres, and studded with starfish and barnacles, arrived on a beach southwest of Portland, Oregon. It has tested negative for radiation, but scientists say a host of invasive marine species may have hitched a ride. Police are guarding the dock while officials decide what to do with it. A plaque on the 20m-long (66ft) structure, which was first mistaken for a barge, shows it came from the port of Misawa in northern Japan.

T
he US town of Boring in Oregon has voted in favour of "pairing" with the village of Dull in Perthshire. Boring decided for the move in the interests of trans-Atlantic relations, tourism and humour, after being approached by residents in Dull. The decision means both places can sell novelty tourist items, get quirky road signs made and plan exchange visits. The difference in size between Boring and Dull meant they could not officially become twin towns.Boring has a population of 12,000 while Dull is a tiny village. The Boring Community Planning Council voted in favour of a "declaration of pairing" after being approached by the Dull Women's Book Club. The BBC's Alastair Leithead in Los Angeles says both settlements profess to be much more interesting than they sound - and are keen to cash in on inquisitive tourists. The Dull and Weem Community Council intends to mark the partnership with a new road sign and a street party on 23 June.

eijing has announced that it will open two new parts of the Great Wall of China to meet high tourist demand. City officials told the state news agency Xinhua that the four parts of the wall currently open to the public are overcrowded on weekends and holidays. Tourists have reportedly responded by scaling the walls of the closed sections, damaging their structure.

The Fusing of Spain and Ireland Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh
I
t all started with two brutish leylandii trees (cupressocyparis leylandii) – the bullies of many a suburban garden and the cause of many a violent deed, of furtive night-time poisonings etc. Neighbours just don’t like them; they steal light and sunshine from their gardens and their aggressive roots spread far and wide. My partner still owns his house in Dublin; his son and daughter live there, Deep at the bottom of his garden, lurked the two monsters – and here I am, of course, referring to the trees, not his delightful progeny. The house was built in the early 50’s; some gardens got two leylandii and a cordyline palm; others were luckier and got more easily maintained, but equally deadly, laburnum trees. Now approaching their 60th birthday, far from growing old and hunchbacked, their fervent limbs reach ever more feverishly skyward. They were lopped back some five years ago but had worked doubly hard to replace all that lost growth. There were mutterings and mumblings amongst the neighbours. It was decided that more serious surgery was necessary but the dismembered trunks were not a pretty sight and the entire garden was starting to look a disaster zone with rampant ivy cocooning everything, above ground and below, and vicious wild raspberry canes taking advantage of the newly exposed growing areas. So Viveros Florena (landscape division) came to the rescue (can’t you just hear the trumpet clarion?) and we became international. With me

and my partner having strong ties and homes in both Ireland and Spain, it was logical that our first international venture should link the two countries together. I designed a totally new garden for Merv – a fusion garden uniting the warmth of Mediterranean style with the lushness and forty shades of green of humid Ireland. His jungle of weeds was about to be beaten back and the sleeping beauty revealed – and guess what took centre stage? The leylandii trunks, of course! The two trees forked naturally into three trunks. Each was cut to a different height. The daddy loomed at 5m and was painted a luscious antique plum; the middle mummy trunk, 3m, wears fetching terracotta and big fat baby trunk, 1.5m, a mooching shade of melon. The mood of the garden spins around these colours. So bare concrete block walls were rendered then final coated in a tinted terracotta render. It added instant warmth to the garden, even on rainy days – and there were plenty of those – and brought to mind sheltered courtyard gardens. A large flowing raised flower bed was built along one side, finished in the same terracotta render and capped. New paving tiles were laid – a lovely mix of broody slate purple, terracotta and mellow melon/sandstone. A dividing channel - used to dissimulate a change of levels between the pathway and lawn - was created with plum slate and the same stones mulched around the feet of the trunks. Even shed doors were painted in the same three colours as was a past-its-best cedar table which had been left outside for too many winters. This

was originally chucked in the skip, but I took pity on its sorry state - it had great form and shape - so I spent some time on refurbishing it. It now looks wonderful on the patio, reflecting and harmonising the same shades of the paving slabs. An old domestic oil tank was drained and disposed of, along with a factorylike chimney from the defunct boiler house, and that immediately opened up new vistas for some exotic plantings. We took our Spanish landscaper with us so it was a laugh a minute as the rain fell ever heavier – full summer in Dublin. To increase the daliesque situation, my daughters, who were back in Andalucía were constantly ringing to complain about water cuts, and with both our water pumps inexplicably out of action and temperatures swooping into the 40’s, the drought at the garden centre was becoming palpable. With only two weeks scheduled for the entire job, the macs were donned and sheets of plastic were draped over newly rendered walls. The area to be lawned started to form muddy ponds of wildlife and you could easily carry more soil on your wellingtons than on a spade. We only had one dry day in fifteen! Damian, our landscaper, learnt many important new words – rain, wet, puddle and lake – as the heavens determined not to give us a break. Merv said it was our own fault for working on a Sunday – his mother (and Him up in the sky) would never forgive us! Son Robbie knuckled in, barrowing every kilo of material through the garage to the back of the house – 30 sacks of cement, 36 of render, 4m3 of sand, 375 paving slabs, 30m2 of concrete blocks, 62m2 of lawn turf, bark chippings, plum slates etc. He still swears that Merv chose solid concrete blocks and the heaviest paving slabs in the shop as a penance for all his drunken nights of debauchery! But by way of 5am starts and 9pm finishes we slowly won - simply because we’re not good at giving up!

Irish reaction, of course, was immense; they all watched us working through it all, cheering us on and hanging out of their windows to get a peek at the next stage of lunacy. The neighbours on one side have started subscribing to the lottery so that we can do their garden on their first big win. Whilst neighbours on the other side, determined not to be outdone and totally gobsmacked by what we’d achieved, dashed out to the local garden centre on Sunday, returning in a car brimming with pots and plants! We finished at 2pm on Sunday and were flying out the next morning at 7am. A full half day free to celebrate, so we hit the highest pub in Ireland, downed the heaviest amount of seafood they could provide and came back to lounge in the, for once, dry garden, wetting the babies’ head with cava and Guinness – a true fusion garden, like I said. Salud and slainte! Take another walk through the garden with me next month when I’ll detail some of the plants we used. Lorraine Cavanagh has lived in Spain for 26 years. JELLYFISH What do you do if you get stung by a jelly fish?
E
very year thousands of bathers fall foul of these nasty little creatures. Summertime can bring a common danger to the Mediterranean; jellyfish (medusas).
They tend to occur in swarms and so are easily visible and, in theory, avoided. A combination of factors determines the concentrations of jellyfish in a given year. A warm and dry winter and spring inland will normally lead to a high buildup of jellyfish at sea. This seemingly unconnected chain of events is because the cold, less salty water of the coast acts as a barrier to jellyfish. They normally live between 20 and 40 miles from the coast where the water is warmer and saltier. However, when rain-fed freshwater river input is lower, salinity increases, allowing the jellies in. Other factors include winds and sea currents. Jellyfish just drift in the currents like buoys. Hot summer weather certainly also brings them in, which also attracts us in our millions, therefore sting numbers increase dramatically. Jellyfish can also swarm in the winter but nobody notices. Probably the commonest jellyfish in the Spanish Mediterranean is a nasty little one called the Sea Nettle or Mauve Stinger ('medusa luminiscente' Pelagia noctiluca). Its swarms can lead to beaches being closed. Also beware of the Compass jellyfish (Chrysaora hysoscella),
32 The Grapevine
identified by a ring of brown dots around a white saucer-shaped body, as it gives a potent sting which can produce extremely painful, long lasting weals. More worryingly, this year, dozens of Portuguese Man-o-war (Carabela portuguesa - Physalia physalis) were detected off the Asturian coast among swarms of harmless Velella Velella. The purple Man-o-war is not a true jellyfish, but a colony of hydrozoan polyps. It can, in extreme cases, provoke a cardiac arrest and death in particularly sensitive persons. Q. What do you do if you get stung by a jelly fish? A. Act quickly and calmly to remove the tentacles, stop the stinging, and deactivate any toxin. Here is where people get confused, because the best steps to take depend on what type of animal caused the sting. Here's a good basic strategy, especially if you don't know what caused the sting: 1. Get out of the water. It's easier to deal with the sting and it takes drowning out of the equation. 2. Rinse the affected area with sea water. Do not use fresh water! Fresh water will cause any stinging cells that haven't fired (called nematocysts) to do so and release their venom, possibly worsening the situation.
4. Keep an eye on the victim. If you see any signs of an allergic reaction, call the emergency services immediately. Symptoms could include difficulty breathing, nausea, or dizziness. Some redness and swelling is normal, but if it spreads outward from the sting or if you see hives on other parts of the body, that could indicate an allergic response. If you suspect a reaction, do not hesitate to seek medical attention! 5. Now... if you are sure the sting is from a jellyfish and not a Portuguese Man of War or any other animal, you can use chemistry to your advantage to inactivate the toxin, which is a protein. How do you inactivate proteins? You can change the temperature or acidity by applying heat or an acid or base, such as vinegar or baking soda or diluted ammonia, or even an enzyme, such as the papain found in papaya and meat tenderizer. However, chemicals may cause the stinging cells to fire, which is bad news for someone allergic to jellyfish toxin or anyone stung by a Portuguese Man of War. 6. Some people carry aloe vera gel, Benadryl cream, or hydrocortisone cream. I'm not sure how effective the aloe is, but Benadryl is an antihistamine, which may help limit an allergic response to the sting. Hydrocortisone can help reduce inflammation. If you seek medical attention and used Benadryl or hydrocortisone, be sure to alert the medical professionals. Acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen commonly are used to relieve pain.

alterations. Also inside, and not far from Tanya is Elizabeth and David's stall where they sell hand painted mirrors and clocks. The pictures on their advert on page 39 does not do their work justice. Luckily they have a website you can look at and order on called www.time2refelect.eu.
I know Anita who runs the market and a few stall holders that advertise with me. However, last month I took some time out to really chat to the stall holders and find out what they do. Often it is easy to walk round a place without really looking, this time I paid more attention and I realise now there are some great things on offer at this market and some great skills and talent available to us.
One of my favourite personalities at the market is Mario who can be found inside towards the back of the hall. He really is a cheeky chappy and sells guitars and provides lessons to all ages. As I wandered around the stalls one in particular caught my eye, I hadn't noticed these beautiful cards before. So, I stopped to talk to Lyn, who makes these stunning boxed greeting cards and as I studied the whole selection I realised what a talented lady she is. This stall really is a must to visit in the centre of the hall. Also, in the centre is Andrew Home Improvement Services, yes he is called Andrew and he is happy to chat to you with regard to any work you need doing at your home. If you are looking at making changes to your home perhaps also pass by The Glass Curtains stall and talk to Len he can be found outside just before the entrance to the main hall.
Peter from Delta PC and John from printerink.es I know quite well not only because they advertise in the magazine but Peter has given me some good PC advice in the past and I regularly buy my ink cartridges from John. I met Tanya and her husband who run a full haberdashery service and Tanya's skills are evident with the items she had on display. She was keen to tell me that a lot of her work now is updating items such us old garden furniture and clothes

Perhaps, if it is jewellery you are after look no further than Jazzy Jewellery run by Marion who has a great selection of Costume jewellery. Or at the back of the hall you can find Second Hand Jewellery Traders who buy and sell jewellery and also have some lovely items on display. The first stall on the left as you walk into the air conditioned hall is Penny's Watches. She has watches on display which she buys from a lovely shop called Time to Time in the UK. She also repairs watches and so does another stall nearby El Relojero run by Germaine. Both these stalls were busy so obviously Trapiche market is the place to buy and repair a watch! Unfortunately, I didn't have time to speak to everyone as in addition to these stalls there are many others including clothes, fruit and veg, books, shoes, animal accessories, arts and crafts and many more. The setting of Los Jardines del Trapiche is beautiful and after browsing you can sit having a coffee in their lovely grounds. Hopefully I have given you a taster and we will see you there next Tuesday! See advert opposite for directions and the next few pages details some of what is on offer there.

DEATH OF A SALESMAN Why did you move to Spain? by Andy Wilkes
A
constant topic amongst the ex-pat community is “what did you do in the UK?” Obviously the answer you do not want from your builder or plumber is “errmm….a bus conductor”. This response however seems to garner a better reaction than my answer; “actually I was a salesman”. At this point saying ‘abattoir operative’ or ‘reformed paedophile’ would probably get a better reception. OK so my name is Andy Wilkes and I was a salesman. There I have said it. Previous to that I was an overworked and underpaid field service engineer which meant being in Carlisle one day and Brighton the next (I kid you not) or on the M1 driving to London at 4 am to “beat the rush”. One day sitting in the offices of our High Wycombe branch a BMW coupe swung into the car park; “look at that flash twerp” I commented to a group of colleagues (OK so what I actually said would probably be best suited to a post-watershed Channel 4 sit-com) and my peers agreed. What would he do without us to deliver his mealymouthed promises? Fast-forward a couple of years and the then sales manager at my company Barry Waterman (not his real name) asked me to assist in a sales opportunity. Gary (I mean
40
The Grapevine
Barry) was your archetypal salesman; quick witted, funny and a hit with the ladies, but one thing I should have noticed was his stress-related psoriasis, so bad that he had to wear pink face make-up to cover it up. I was oblivious to this as he oozed success, drove a Mercedes and all of the girls in accounts fancied him. Anyway, after my support in the sales opportunity a vacancy arose in the sales team; a salesman was off to pastures new and Gary decided to offer me the role based on my efforts in the successful sales opportunity. I had a dilemma; do I leave the security of my job in technical support or take the new job? Although I say my role in technical support was secure it was also very, very stressful. Only one month before I witnessed a colleague suffer a nervous breakdown before my very eyes. At first I thought he was joking; already burdened with a stack of calls from customer’s phone calls yet another problematic phone call from high profile customer pushed him over the edge. He began saying “I can’t take anymore” over and over again. I laughed as he was a bit of joker ad was always acting the fool. When he slid down the wall and sat slumped on the floor sobbing for at least on hour my co-workers and I realised it was no joke. Eventually an old friend
and colleague of his was found to lead him to the local pub and eventually home where he remained for the next 3 months. It was one of the most shocking things I have ever witnessed firsthand and probably made me decide that the move to sales was the right thing to do.
Wrong! I never knew the meaning of stress until I moved into sales. I went from relative obscurity in the technical support department to the Managing Director asking me “have you sold anything today Mr Wilkes?” within one week of my new role. Our MD was scary and had a reputation for being a bit of a nutter; there were stories abound such as the time he was speaking to his wife on his car phone; the conversation turned into an argument and as he turned the corner to his house he carried on accelerating and drove the car into his living room wall. And the time that the coffee machine was not working in our Birmingham office and he calmly walked into the workshop and asked to borrow a hammer before smashing the coffee machine into a thousand pieces. So last week I was just the lanky idiot in tech support and now I was Andy Wilkes who had sold sod-all that week. The pressure was mounting.

A salesman has an annual target which equates to a monthly target; this is the way that sales people are remunerated. This is ‘Your Number’. This is the measure by which you fail or succeed. Customer satisfaction or how many girls in accounts fancy you do not come into the equation. A salesman has a 3-month window to make some sales and show a pipeline of opportunities. In sales you are only as good as your last sale. So a salesman that had his met his number for say, 12 months, only has 3 months to keep his job should the sales dryup. That is 90 days - mas o menos - between success and the sack. It is at this point you start understanding what stress is; 15 phone calls a day from annoyed customers? Forget it. Think your monthly mortgage payment and family to clothe and feed being at stake. At this point you realise the rest of the company is in salesprevention mode. Imagine this scenario; you are at 90% of your monthly sales target which means
that you will either earn say £1,000 that month or £3,000 that month. You find an opportunity where a customer of 5 years standing wants to spend £50,000 with you taking you to 110% of target. The thrill of making that phone call and getting that purchase order is hard to describe. I can pay the mortgage, I can buy a new washing machine, and I can………..wait! Wait a minute Mr Flash salesman; somebody in credit control has just put a halt to the order because the company placing the order did not pay their last invoice until 45 days had past instead of the agreed 30 days. Sorry but there is no way that this can be allowed to proceed. At this point the rest of an organisation starts to seem secondary to the role of a salesman; no sales, no wages, no need for credit control or a technical support department. I have seen sales colleagues sacked for questioning the CEO of a company. I have worked for a company that in a bid to meet
quarterly budgets regularly culled swathes of the sales team. This meant that on the last day of the month there would be a line of taxis waiting in the car park to allow the unfortunate sales people to hand over their car keys and leave the company. Harsh, but they simply did not hit the magic number – goodbye and don’t let the door slam as you leave. One time in a fit of over-efficiency a receptionist called an unwitting salesman to inform him that there was a taxi waiting for him. “Taxi? But I did not order a taxi…………………..oh, I see” So let this article be the answer to the “Why did you move to Spain?” question. May I introduce you to the term Lifestyle Entrepreneur; suffice to say that the last time I had stress-related chest pains on a Sunday evening was whilst living in the UK working in sales. Flash twerp or person on the edge? You decide!
Meet... Diane Local favourites - we ask a local about their favourite things How long have you lived in Spain? For 6 years and I live with my husband in the Competa campo. YOU BOUGHT WHAT?! 10 Extraordinarily Peculiar eBay Purchases
T
he worldwide garage sale. Since its creation millions of items have been bought and sold. You can find just about anything on eBay, the question is whether or not you would buy it.Perhaps the strangest phenomena is the ridiculous amounts of money people are actually willing to pay for some of this crazy stuff. 1.Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese Sandwich: Diane Duyser, from Florida sold her grilled cheese sandwich that appeared to have the face of the Virgin Mary upon it. The item was purchased by an online casino for $28,000! 2. Ghost in a Jar: A man from Arkansas sold a strange jar that he claimed contained a ghost inside of it. He said he found it while metal detecting around an old cemetery. 3.18 Year old British Girl's Virginity: In order to pay off her college tuition, Cary's Copestakes put her virginity up for auction on eBay without her parents knowledge. The bid started at $10,000 and was taken up by a business man. However, he merely gave her the money in pity of her situation and did not take her up on the service she offered.

4. Ex-wife's Wedding Dress: A man found his ex-wife's wedding dress in the attic and before he could burn it, his sister suggested he sell it on eBay. Along with a description of the dress, he delivered a hilarious rant about his ex-wife and even modeled the dress himself. He claims all he wanted was enough money to buy tickets for a Mariners game and a case of beer. His wish came true when a young lady purchased the dress for $3,850! 5. Doritos Cheese Pope Hat: In Salem, Massachusetts, the Chadwick family opened up a bag of Doritos to discover a chip that perfectly resembled the Pope's Mitre or in other word's, the pope's “really tall hat”. The same online casino that purchased the Virgin Mary Grilled Cheese bought this cheesy artifact for $1209! 6.The Meaning of Life: That's right, folks. For $3.26 it's all yours. The answers to everything you could ever ask. But if you live outside of the U.S., that's just too bad because the seller would only ship within the U.S. The exact nature of this item was not given and the only picture was the rainbow.
7. Vampire Killing Kit: A seller from Oklahoma made $2,005.50 from this supposed 18th Century Vampire Killing Kit. It all came in a linden wood box, lined on the inside with maroon velvet. Inside the box were the following items: One wooden hammer (9 inches long), four stakes 7 inches – each), prayer book, crucifix, knife, picking scissors and eight bottles with Pamant (holy soil), Agheazma (holy water), Mir (anointing oil), Tamaie (holy incense), Usturoi (garlic), red serum, blue serum and secret potion, wooden cross, and a metal syringe box. The seller claimed that the estimated value of the artifact was between $29,000 and $51,000 although many doubt this to be true. 8. John F Kennedy Assassination Shooters Perch Window: The actual window and frame from which Lee Harvey Oswald shot and killed our 35th president, John F. Kennedy. 188 bids were placed and the winning bidder paid $3,001,501.00 on February 16th 2007 and gained what is most likely the most valuable window in the world. 9. Real Shrunken Heads: 26 shrunken heads were sold on eBay. The heads came straight from the Jíbaro Indian tribe in the jungles of Ecuador. Only 7 bids were placed on them and the winner paid a little under $25 for them. 10. UFO Detector: A small Brazilian Company known as InterBras put this “very sensitive magnometer” up for sale on eBay in March of 2000. They claimed that when foreign objects were flying nearby in the sky, it would flash and beep. A UFO enthusiasts happily payed $135 it. Unfortunately a picture of this piece of equipment could not be found. It must be top secret.

WINES FROM LA RIOJA Discover the world of Rioja Wines
R
ioja is a small area, but is the richest in production of table wines in Spain and has gained a world-wide reputation in the past few years. It is divided into sub-areas: Rioja Baja, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Rioja Baja produces fruity, fullbodied wines of higher alcoholic content than the other two areas. Rioja Alta is the area known for one-year old red wines, called aĂąadas and for reservas, which are wines aged for at least two years in a barrel, plus one year in bottles. These are highly aromatic wines, balanced and with a flavor that cannot be mistaken. White wines, best drank young are also produced in this area.
that they have been left to mature: Crianza Wines are aged for a period of at least one year in a barrel, then stored in bottles for one more year. As a rule, Crianzas are made from grapes of the third, fourth or fifth crop. Reserva These wines are aged for at least two years in the barrel, then one additional year in the bottle. Gran Reserva Aged for at least three years in oak barrels, then one year in bottles in the underground cellars famous in La Rioja, called calaos.
Rioja Alavesa is an area that produces young red wines.
Rioja Wineries The following is a short list of Rioja wines that are readily available.
Special Reserves As we mentioned, this area produces some truly high quality wines, called special reserves. They come in three categories, depending on the length of time

Reserva wines and the grapes come from vineyards that are at least 20 years old. Marques de Caceres - Enrique Forner founded this winery in the 1960's with the help of his friend, professor Emile Peynaud, who had already collaborated with the Forner family in Bourdeaux, France. The winery is named after the Marques, Juan Ambrosio Garcia de CĂĄceres y Montemayor. C.V.N.E. (Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana) - This winery was founded in 1879 and keeps up to date on the latest equipment and technology available. This winery was honored when the Royal Family chose one of its wines to be served at one of Prince Felipe's wedding celebrations. Campo Viejo - This is one of the largest bodegas, with over 45,000 barrels, stored in its underground cellars. This winery has a wide variety of wines, from simple white table wines to exclusive special reserves.

Local News Noche Del Vino 2012 August 15th - Cómpeta
c
ómpeta is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiesta's in Cómpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine! The event pays homage to the town's patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia's most important yearly events. In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional
activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food. Over 300 litres of oil will be on hand to prepare migas, the traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol. Cómpeta sees more than 1,500 litres of wine shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cómpeta. Below you will find the program for the day and evening. Please also turn over to find out what bars and restaurants are around to eat and drink in throughout the day.

WINE TOURS AT BODEGAS BENTOMIZ Fine wines in the Axarquia
Y
ou see this extraordinary landscape: the gritty steep slopes beaten down the valley by heavy spring rains then roasted under cloudless skies for months; the unforgiving slatey soils leading to the great bulk of the Sierra Tejeda mountains. But in these valleys the harshness is moderated, softened by vineyards and olive groves; astonishingly precipitous hillsides are neatly pinned with rows of vine stumps, that throw out a spreading bush of fresh green leaves and luscious pale green grapes that somehow keep their tender colour right through the scorching summer, when all the wildflowers have withered away. In August the midday heat makes the air feel like treacle, yet the Noche del Vino on the 15th marks the start of the wine harvest: this is the time of year to get to work on those punishing slopes. It is extraordinary that the final product of this dazzling climate, harsh topography and very hard work is such a delicate, decadent drink. Getting to see a vineyard and learn about the wine-making process gives an extra dimension to enjoying the wines themselves. Bodegas Bentomiz near Sayalonga invites visitors to do just. You look out at the vines,
58
The Grapevine
now heavy with grapes, see the production plant and get an understanding of how this tiny family business has grown, from the recovery of an abandoned vineyard, to a wine-making hobby, to a growing international business producing awardwinning quality wines. Getting into and recognised by the quality wine market is not easy – you can’t just go and knock on Gordon Ramsey’s door! – and how they did it is part of a fascinating story. Then there’re the Bodegas Bentomiz “Ariyanas” wines: a range of very distinctive whites from our own Moscatel de Alejandría grape and reds, which including the local (and now rare) Romé grape from the Axarquía region. You learn how they are made and what foods they pair up with best; how the critics see them and how to taste them. This last is particularly important: the tour naturally includes tasting the wines. If you opt for the tapas tour you will also enjoy a selection of tapas paired with each of the wines. Winemakers Clara and André are interested in the concept of “slow food”: food that is worth taking the time to make and eat; food that looks, smells and tastes good; food that complements (and is complimented by) the Ariyanas wines. So the tapas are carefully
selected and home made: they might include something as simple and locally traditional as tortilla, or as sophisticated as gingerbread layered with membrillo (quince pear jelly) topped with pâté de foie gras. wines. This is something they hope to develop further this year. If you have visited the Bodega in the past few years you are used to seeing a red-brick building with an unfinished upper-story. In the last few months it has been transformed: the red brick plastered and finished with a beautiful façade of local slate; the upper story taking shape with a tasting room housing a “wine altar” and boasting a stunning view down to the coast, and a kitchen. This development is a long held dream of Clara and Andre’s. Opening a gourmet food and wine pairing restaurant within the Sayalonga valley in these times of economic doubt and gloom may seem astonishingly ambitious. But then, so are the Ariyanas wines now served at The Square, The Ledbury, Gordon Ramsay’s, Raymond Blanc´s, and many others. If you can’t make it to one of these Michelin starred restaurants why not take a tour at the Bodegas Bentomiz. Rose Jones

LT CONSTRUCTION WATER DEPOSITS & TANKS Water deposits and tanks are a vital part of managing your water requirements in your home as here in the Andalusian countryside the mains water supply can often be cut for several days or were the water pressure can fall to a mere trickle. Water tank application parameters include the general design of the tank, its materials of construction, i.e. reinforced fiberglass or reinforced concrete, as well as the following: - Location of the water tank (above ground vs. below ground). - Volume of water the tank will need to hold, which will depend on the number of people in the house and the requirements for the garden. - Will the water from the tank be solely used for drinking and domestic use or irrigation, or both? - Extremes of temperature of the area where
64

water will be stored, if the tank is exposed to the sun, harmful bacteria can more easily form, or at high altitudes the risk of potential freezing. - Pressure requirements (domestic pressure range in the region of 35-60 PSI). The methods by which water is delivered into and extracted from the water tank, i.e. will a pump be required. - Design considerations allowing water tanks to survive seismic movement and natural land movement. - Filtration and back-flow prevention. As water tanks are essential for living in the countryside in Spain it is important that they are installed correctly. Why not talk to LT Construction when considering a new tank or upgrading your existing system.

José Luis Torres Gutiérrez - Alcalde
The Grapevine has received many emails and been asked personally many questions over two issues in the last few months, namely the receipt of large water bills in thecampo and the Correos increased charges for more than one person receiving mail at a post box. Having Spoken to the Competa Town Hall please find below their official statements on both issues.
THE TRUE COST OF CÓMPETA WATER
T
he law is quite clear on the charges levied for Cómpeta water and nothing has changed since the 6th of April 2006. The official bulletin of the province of 2006 quite clearly states the cost of water in the village and in the campo, the Town Hall is quite simply applying the tariffs according to the regulations currently in force. The Mayor does not have the right to apply either penalties or sanctions he has to apply the bye-laws with the prices which are available for all to see on the Cómpeta web-site. In the campo the set price for the quarterly consumption in excess of 40 M? is 4 euros and twenty centimos. This is the official price and is neither a penalty nor a fine. To find out the true cost of Cómpeta water one simply has to come to the Town Hall and ask. In order to help you and your neighbours we need your full details name, address etc, rumours and anonymity serve no useful purpose. It is possible that three bills may well add up to 7,000 euros but without more details we cannot carry out a financial survey. However the amount of water
lost in these times of water shortage is distressing and disturbing. We all have our rights and responsibilities, for example the responsibility for the water supply up to and including the water meter belongs to the Town Hall. From the water meter to the house is the responsibility of the subscriber and/or the person who supervises and monitors the maintenance of the water supply. Finally the Cómpeta water supply is for domestic use only, for human consumption, and not for gardens and swimming pools. Other private water suppliers are available to supply untreated water for nondomestic use. The use of Cómpeta water for nondomestic use is the main reason why the campo is short of water, there is not enough water for everybody. If you would like to discuss any of the issues raised please contact either: Jose Luis Lopez Ruiz and/or Tom Ferber

and keep reasonable consistency in a specific wine between vintages.
WHY VINTAGE MATTERS What decides a vintage wine?
A
wine’s vintage, or the year that the grapes were harvested, is a critical clue in determining if a wine will meet your expectations or not. The vintage year is one of the key pieces of information that you’ll find on the wine label. You can have the same producer, the same grapes sourced from the same vineyards, the same winemaker and the only piece of the vinification equation that is changed is the year and ...boom… this year’s wine offers a completely different experience than it did the year before. Why? The vintage variable plays a major role in determining what kind of wine will be bottled. The Weather and Wine Most consumers don’t pay attention to vintage reports from year to year, they know that they like “wine X” and they continue to scout for it year in and year out, they may notice that it doesn’t taste quite like the last bottle and maybe even that the year has changed on the label, but beyond those details they press on and stick with the particular wine. When in reality, the wine could be dramatically different from year to year depending on the weather patterns hitting the vineyards, the harvest time and how a unique micro-climate was affected by both obvious and subtle nuances in the weather. Was it unusually hot this year, but last year they
68
The Grapevine
battled an ongoing soggy season? Were there any unusual early or late frosts this year? Grapes varietals are affected by weather in various ways. The Riesling grape, for example, thrives under cooler growing conditions, and that’s precisely why Germany and Oregon have much of the market cornered on stellar Rieslings. However, if you have a particularly warm, dry growing season, the Riesling vintage could suffer that year and the same producer that offered the Riesling you fell in love with the year before, might not meet prior expectations this vintage and you could be left waiting to see what the next year’s weather will bring to a region and ultimately a vintage. The Miraculous Winemaker After a rough weather season you might think all is lost and you’ll just need to stretch your favorite bottles until the next vintage, but that’s where skilled winemakers can really work their magic. If poor weather patterns prevail for a given region, an experienced winemaker can salvage the vintage by employing various interventions and techniques during the vinification process. Whether, the vintner brings the wine around via blending, utilizing different fermentation processes or considers additives – it takes a knowledgeable winemaker to “save” a potentially sour vintage
What about “Non-vintage” Wines? Most sparkling wines and fortified wines are classified as “nonvintage” wines, because they are typically a blend of various vintages. This blending practice is utilized to try to get a very consistent style of wine from year to year. In exceptional years, a vintage Champagne or vintage Port will debut due to ideal growing conditions and you can expect that these particular vintage wines will garner a pretty penny. Every year updated vintage charts document the most and least noteworthy wines from a specific region, while these can be cumbersome to maintain in a detailed online format, for those truly interested in delving deeper into various vintages, there are several solid books that will take you on the full excursion through a mighty vintage tour. Robert Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide, 7th Edition: The Complete, Easy-toUse Reference on Recent Vintages, Prices, and Ratings for More than 8,000 Wines from All the Major Wine Regions is a fairly exhaustive resource on the vintage variable. When you think of vintage, consider a region’s weather pattern for the specific year and you’ll be on the right track in determining what odds were for or against the wine right from the start. You can access a region’s vintage report for individual years either online or through resources like Wine Spectator. Source http://wine.about.com/od/winebasi c1/a/WhyVintageMatters.htm NB Recent good vintages for Rioja include 1996, 1995, 1994, 1991, 1989, 1987 and 1985.

DARTS
THE SPIDER
My wife, who has never even seen a dartboard, much less played a game, has decided to join my team so we can "spend more time together".
I said to my girlfriend, "Please get me a newspaper." "Don't be silly," she replied, "you can borrow my iPad."
As we walked to the pub she excitedly asked me what she would have to do.
That spider never knew what hit it.
STEVE S- ARCHEZ "Well," I told her, "since it's your first time, we'll probably just put you in goal".
SCHOOL FRIEND PRISON Watching Gordon Ramsey Behind Bars - he wants the prisoners to show they have the ability to give something back to society. My TV and Playstation would be a nice start.
I bumped into an old school friend today. He started showing off, talking about his well paid job and expensive sports car. Then he pulled out a photo of his wife and said, "She's beautiful, isn't she?" I said, "If you think she's gorgeous, you should see my girlfriend."
INSECT KILLER The instructions on my insect killer:
He said, "Why? Is she a stunner?"
'Do Not Spray Near The Eyes' Sod being that particular, I'll just spray the whole wasp.
I said, "No, she's an optician.”
STEVE S- ARCHEZ
SECURITY TV
A security guard stopped me as I walked out of Tesco this morning.
I saw a youth carrying a widescreen TV down the road earlier..
"I believe you've got a bottle of champagne inside your jacket," he said. "Would you mind opening it for me?"
"Where are you going with that TV?" I asked him "I've just got it for my mother", he replied.
"Not at all," I replied. "Have you got a couple of glasses?”
The above jokes were sent by Lucy (Northampton) - via Facebook
"Ahh", says I, "I've seen your mother, it's not a bad swap".

Local News WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA mention to Barry Tait, widower of dear Linda Tait who we lost to cancer last year. Barry donated Linda’s sewing machine which we put up for “best bid” and then Barry generously doubled the money we raised.
DAY FOR LIFE Thank you, thank you, and thank you to everyone who made our Day for Life during May 2012 such a success. I indicated in last month’s Grapevine that I was confident we would raise as much money as last year, e4150 but we have actually “smashed it!!” The total amount raised was e4675 – an amazing result from our wonderful community. Thank you to all the walkers and their generous sponsors, all the people who kindly donated raffle prizes and to those who bought and sold raffle tickets; all the volunteers and also to everyone who joined in the day by giving their time and support. A special mention goes firstly to Lesley Forrester who broke all previous records and brought in an incredible e540 of sponsorship money. Apparently her husband, Stephen bullied everyone he met in the UK to sponsor Lesley on her walk!!! Secondly an individual special

SUMMER SALES The summer sales in Axarquia have begun very slowly, without much improvement in purchases compared to the rest of the year. As usual, the economic crisis seems to be to blame for the unusually sluggish sales campaign. Despite prices going down up to 70 per cent, and sales beginning on a Sunday, “customers just can't spend as much any more.” A shop owner in Rincon de la Victoria complained that even with the discounts, people are
not willing to pay what is on the price tags. “I've had people trying to haggle over items that had already gone down 20 per cent.” Most small businesses are struggling to stay open, because even their usual clientele cannot continue spending as much as they used to. However, more expensive items including party wear and exclusive clothing are selling slightly more in certain establishments. Shop assistants attribute this modest increase to the early drop in prices during this year's campaign.
JELLYFISH NUMBERS AT ALL TIME HIGH THIS YEAR. Two Thousand people have been stung on the Costa del Sol’s beaches due this year’s unusual proliferation of jellyfish. A lack of rain and absence of turtles has favoured the growth in the jellyfish numbers.

Local News LOCAL GIGS The Dixie Swing Band, Sunday Roast - Every Sunday 2pm - 6 pm. The Boatyard Bar Playa Playazo - Nerja Tel. 659 778 105 Accoustic Roots BAN OF DISCOS’ IN VELEZ MALAGA Velez-malaga’s town planning department has furthered its plan to ban discos in El Copo area of Torre del Mar. The department has provisionally approved a modification of the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU) which will prohibit this type of business to open in the area. This measure has been taken due to neighbours complaining about the noise levels in the area for the past several years. The changes in urban planning have not been completely defined given that the noise pollution studies, which will show the problematic areas, have not yet concluded. However, the modification of the PGOU will not affect bars and cafés which play music, as the department had initially planned. This is thanks to a petition by the local business association, which argued that the area’s tourism needs leisure establishments as well.
