Editors Note... Welcome to our 100th edition of The Grapevine Magazine. The magazine first started in the inland village of Competa and spread organically to cover the coast from Nerja to Torre del Mar and the inland villages inbetween such as Lake Vinuela and Puente don Manuel. We were the first magazine to start the an on-line flipping book version and our website still beats the rest for important information from starting a business, moving house or whats on. Our website was also given a mention in the British Airways in flight magazine for the best source of information for the area. Thank you to all our advertisers and contributors over the past 100 editions many of whom appeared in the very first 32 page magazine and have now become friends! Thank you to all our readers both on line and hard copy version and I hope we will be providing great information for another 100 editions to come- thanks to you all.

Also this month is the Noche del Vino. The village of Competa swells in size and most holiday villas have been booked out well in advance of this event on the 15th August. During the day in the Plaza Vendimia you will find the pressing of the grapes, free migas and live music along with a medieval market stretching from the Plaza Almijara to Plaza Vendimia. The entertainment then switches back to the main Plaza for more singing and dancing but beware this does start late maybe another 3.00 am finish for me then! More information on the Noche del Vino event can be found on pages 53 – 56 along with a guide of where to eat, drink and shop on the day. Enjoy and Keep Reading (and looking for that wine glass!). n Australian woman was seriously injured after being gored during the final bull run of this year's annual San Fermín festival in Pamplona, Spain. Four other runners were also taken to hospital after sustaining cuts and bruises. The 23-year-old woman was gored in the back and undergoing surgery, a regional government statement said. She was only identified by her initials, JE. The woman was struck by a massive Miura bull as she clung to wooden barriers yards outside the bullring entrance, said a regional health authority spokesman, Javier Sesma. It is very rare for women to be gored since most of the runners are men. Javier Solano, a San Fermín expert working for the national broadcaster, TVE, said records showed only two other women had been injured by gorings in the recent history of the fiesta.

rian Charrington, described by police as “Mr Big” in the drug smuggling world, was arrested in July in south eastern Spain where he enjoyed a lavish lifestyle built up from his business.

6 The Grapevine

Detectives said Charrington, 57, who had been wanted in four European countries, was arrested at his luxury villa in Marina Alta, between Benidorm and Calpe on Spain’s Costa Blanca. Among the assets seized by police were ten luxury properties along the Alicante stretch of coast, a dozen high-end vehicles and six yachts as well as half a million euros in cash. Police also closed bank accounts containing an estimated five million euros and seized a cocaine shipment of 220kgs with a street value of more than ten million pounds. Charrington, was arrested along with one of his three sons. The other two sons are already serving time in Germany and France for related crimes.

n plans approved by Spain's cabinet, some 15,000 properties – from office buildings to agricultural land – will be put up for sale over the next seven years. The measure is the latest in a series of moves to bring Spain's budget deficit to within the EU target of three per cent by 2016 from 7.1 per cent of GDP last year. Spain's government has introduced a raft of unpopular austerity measures as the nation struggles with its sixth quarter of negative growth and an unemployment rate of nearly 27 per cent. A parliamentary commission has drawn up an extensive list of assets that will be sold to private investors in the hope of raising millions to reduce its public deficit. Among those being offered include disused army barracks, an aerodrome on the island of Minorca, a military shooting range and thousands of office buildings.

G

astro, which is one of only six restaurants in the capital awarded with the coveted two Michelin stars, owes nearly 150,000 euros (£127,000) in back taxes to Spain's Inland Revenue. Celebrated Spanish chef Sergi Arola opened his restaurant five years ago and it has become one of the most sought after tables in the capital. But during a busy lunchtime session, six officials from Spain's Inland Revenue arrived at the restaurant in Madrid's upmarket Calle de Zurbano and in front of diners sealed the dining area and cocktail bar. They then took an inventory of the assets of the restaurant, including its extensive wine cellar. Sara Fort, co-director of the restaurant and wife of Mr Arola, confirmed that Gastro would remain closed for the foreseeable future.

housands of cyclists in Mexico City rode through the streets naked to mark the World Naked Bike Ride. The daring cyclists demanded respect from drivers on the road and also wanted to raise awareness on environmental and health issues. The riders, not all of whom were nude, said showing their naked bodies was a way to show drivers the fragility of the human body. The World Naked Bike Ride movement began on June 12, 2004, in Vancouver, Canada, and has been held every year in 29 cities around the world since then

arole Longhorn, 65, took a number of unusual safety stops after discovering an explosive - including putting a plastic chair on top of it - before bomb disposal experts took it away. She hit the metal object with a spade while she was gardening at her home and when she looked closer realised it was in the shape of a shell. The gardener then put a plastic seat on top of the bomb just in case it went off while she shouted for her husband Clive, 60. Once she had dug it up she took it inside their house and left it on the coffee table. Mr Longhorn then heard a rattle and turned around to see his

omposer Joseph Bertolozzi has turned The Eiffel Tower into his own drum machine, using the iconic Paris tower to sample 2000 sounds for his latest project. Star of songs, sketches and the silver screen for over a hundred years, the Eiffel Tower is now taking the lead role in a musical composition which will see the landmark speak for itself. The structure is an instrument for a piece to be entitled "Tower music" - a project conceived by US composer Joseph Bertolozzi. With latex mallets, drumsticks and even a large log wrapped in lambs wool in his box of tricks, Bertolozzi moves all over the 324-metre tower, hitting its surfaces with varying intensity and recording the sounds produced. The idea is to weave them together, creating chords and melodies over a percussion base. Bertolozzi's team have collected nearly 2,000 samples from the iron structure's railings, panels and girders for the album, which is due out next year

he gentle tweeting of birds from the back garden can be enough to lift anyone’s mood, but new research suggests it may also be a sign that your house will be worth more too. A new study has shown that houses in areas rich with bird life sell for an average of £21,000 more than those with fewer birds. The research, which attempted to compensate for factors such as house size, age and levels of urbanisation, found that the presence of even just one uncommon species of bird was an indication of higher house prices. The more species there were, the higher the prices became, the researchers found. It suggests that house-hunters would do well to listen out for the sound of woodpeckers and nightingales to gauge the quality of a neighbourhood. The researchers also found that nearby parkland did little to influence the number of birds, meaning their presence was due to nearby domestic gardens in the area.

council has been forced to pay a devout Christian more than ÂŁ100,000 after colleagues stuck mini models of male genitalia made of Blu-Tack on her telephone. Devout Christian Margaret Malcolm, 56, complained that male colleagues at Baldragon Academy, Dundee, also scribbled doodles of penises on drawings she had done for her Brownie pack in a campaign of sexual harassment. An employment tribunal in the city also heard that they used "coarse industrial language" directly in front of Miss Malcolm, whom they knew to be devoutly religious. Several episodes from 2001 were recounted, and the tribunal ruled that the behaviour of Miss Malcolm's colleagues John Strachan, Stuart Gourlay and Graham Strachan was "of an obscene and shameful nature".

EL CELLER DE CAN ROCA, GIRONA Why the Roca brothers rule the world!

T

he logo that represents El Celler de Can Roca is an ‘R’ with a difference. The quirk is that the letter that evokes the family name has three ‘legs’ – each representing one of the three Roca brothers, who have combined their diverse skills to such extraordinary effect. This is a Catalan family restaurant through and through, and yet it is also now the best restaurant in the world. The Spanish favourite entered the World’s 50 Best list eight years ago and has somewhat stealthily climbed the rankings since and this year reached the no1 position. Its relatively low-key rise is reflective of the Rocas’ evolutionary approach and modest outlook. The Rocas grew

in their mother’s restaurant in Girona’s working-class suburb of Taiala. In 1986, elder brothers Joan and Josep opened El Celler de Can Roca alongside the original. In 2007 – with younger sibling Jordi on board – they moved just up the road to the striking purpose-built space that remains their home.

magic without undue theatrics. Eating at El Celler is truly uplifting, with the warmth of the family dynamic all-pervasive. Rock on, you Rocas.

Head chef Joan is a cook of the very highest order: he helped pioneer the widespread use of sous-vide cooking in the ’90s via his Roner machine, and is a technical maestro. Josep is the head sommelier who runs the supremely smooth front-of-house operation: understated but passionate. Jordi is the rulebreaking pastry chef whose creations blow the imagination. SEDELLA ART GROUP Do you Know that children can get arthritis?

The art group is raising money for Moving4, a Spanish charity that supports much needed research and also provides funds for training of doctors as well as giving support to families and children who suffer from this

chronic childhood illness in Spain. They also work with other charities both in Britain and the United States to pool knowledge and to support research into the disease. There has been a good response to the fundraising so far. Local schools have taken part in a painting competition that successfully raised awareness of Juvenile Arthritis amongst teachers, children and parents. It also resulted in the schools donating over 700 euros from sales at school markets. There were 3 overall winners of the art competition and other prizes were awarded. The winning pictures will be on exhibition at the next fundraising event - a sale of paintings and other art works. The art group are holding a special exhibition and the sale of art works during the summer fiesta held over the first weekend in August in Sedella. All proceeds are going to Juvenile Arthritis. The Art Group in Sedella are raising funds to help research and raise awareness of Juvenile Arthritis and how it effects children and their families. "We have a family in our local community which is struggling with a young child who was diagnosed with childhood arthritis at only 22 months and we all agreed we wanted to do something to help", says Elena, "We were all shocked at the severity of the condition in young children and how little was known of the disease across Europe".

also grateful for the help of the Centro de Visitantes which has given us permission to use the venue for our event. Everyone is working so hard to make this event a success," explains Elena, " All members of our group are donating some of their paintings to sell and we are lucky that local professional artists have also generously given works for the sale. One of our members, Chris, has dedicated a lot of time and effort into producing and sponsoring all our materials. This is a huge contribution to our fundraising effort. The Art Group is hoping for a huge turnout for their event so that they can raise as much as possible for this worthwhile cause. AUTOCOOL Mobile Car air-conditioning service and headlight refurbishing service.

I

first started the business eight years ago when I recognised that there was a need for a mobile car air-con service in the area. I had previously worked on vehicle maintenance and before working on car air-con systems I undertook specialist training and obtained City and Guilds Certification in the repair and maintenance of car air-con systems. When I service a car air-con system I only use new R134 gas, NOT the old gas that has been removed from other cars. I do not simply top-up your system with a small amount of gas because it has to be completely cleaned out to remove any impurities and if this is not done properly your system will not run efficiently and may well cause damage to your compressor etc. I also inject a measured amount of compressor oil that contains dye so that if your system later develops a leak it makes it easier to find where the leak is coming from. In addition to this I noticed a couple of years ago that there were a large number of cars that had very badly discoloured headlights. I also take cars for their ITV test and on one occasion the ITV was failed because the headlights did not come up to standard. Because of this, I invested in some professional restoration equipment and since then this has become an increasingly busy part of my business. New headlights can cost up to 1000 euros or more so it's worth paying a small amount to repair them and restore them to almost as new again. Both of these services can be carried out at your home so you don't have to leave your car at garage for the best part of a day. In addition I also carry out repairs to air-con systems such as replacing compressors and air-con radiators but I would stress that it's far cheaper to service your car air-con system than to wait for it to break down. A new compressor can cost anything from 500 euros to well over 1000 euros for some cars so regular

really benefit from being left to mature and aerated before drinking. .

In our own Axarquía region the most innovative winery may be Bodegas Bentomiz: their sweet dessert wines have an extraordinary freshness and delicacy. In addition to sweet and dry muscatel wines they have developed a dry red blend and, most unusually, a sweet red using Merlot. Their latest is a very dry and subtle rosé from the locally indigenous Romé grape. All their wines live up to their name, Ariyanas, which comes from an Arabic root meaning 'aromatic'.

panish wine? The autoresponse from most people is Rioja. If you ask tourists what they think of Málaga wine you may find they mistake your question for what they think of the wine they've drunk on holiday. Sadly, the visitors to this beautiful region come for its weather rather than its wines. Yet Malaga is one of the oldest wine regions in Spain: wine has been made here since before the Romans arrived and continued to be produced through the 800 years of Muslim rule. Sherry wines were massively popular among the British: this is the “sack” that Shakespeare's debauched characters drank – but Malaga's wines were known and respected throughout Europe. What happened? The phylloxera virus devastated vineyards here in 1878, abruptly cutting supply. But then, phylloxera ravaged almost all of Europe. The downfall was more fashion led, with the demand for sweet wines falling right through the 20th Century until it seemed Malaga wines would effectively disappear. Happily that now looks unlikely. There has been a surge in the popularity of in dessert wines, generating interest in the old wines of the region as modern production methods have improved consistency and quality, producing wines that are sweet without being sticky. In addition, a number of innovative young wineries are creating exciting dry wines from the traditional Malaga grapes, under the D.O. Sierras de Málaga. The grapes

used, in addition to Malaga's ubiquitous Moscatel de Alejandría, include a wide range of varieties such as Tempranillo, Petit Verdot and Merlot, and rare local vines, such as Romé. Which wine makers are making these exciting new wines? In the Ronda area, Bodega Schatz was the first in the region to use biodynamic production methods. His signature wine is said to combine lightness of touch and fruit character with good length and concentration.

This very brief review merely hints at the potential of the wines being grown and developed right here. It is something of a luxury to live in or visit an old wine region in the process of being rediscovered and where new wines are evolving in the midst of tradition. But what a waste to miss out when you are in this very province! .

When in Malaga…drink modern Malaga wines! .

Nearby is the wonderfully named Descalzos Viejos – the old unshod – apparently a traditional name for some orders of monks, linked to the fact that the winery is in the restored grounds of an abandoned monastery. The wine style is said to be more in the new world than the traditional Spanish style, being intensely structured, dark fruit, new oak and huge tannins. These are wines that

DONATE AND FEEL GREAT! Action for animals

T

his month we're talking about the benefits of donating to charity. We all know that recycling is one of the best ways for us to have a positive impact on the world in which we live, but did you know that giving to charity is also good for your health? Studies indicate that simply contemplating generosity boosts your immunity. And a cluttered environment is bad for you too! Living with too much clutter has been shown to be one of the biggest causes of stress in our lives. . Megan Furniss, one of the Action for Animals volunteers, has written this month's light-hearted article in praise of donating your unwanted goods for charitable purposes. Read on... I'm sure that most of you “do your bit” for recycling, and probably have done for years. Tins, bottles, paper and nowadays even tetra packs and plastic. But why not go a step further and consider recycling your clothes, books, furniture, bedding and crockery? Practically everything you no longer want in your home could be re-used by somebody else. So

36 The Grapevine

sort out your cupboards and drawers, look under your bed and clamber into the loft. I can guarantee there will be something lurking that you could donate. If it's not broken, dangerous or illegal, we'll be delighted to accept it at The Action for Animals Charity Shop. Ladies, come closer, I'm going to whisper. We've all done it – kept our guilty secrets from our husbands – feeling bad about it for weeks or maybe months. You know what I'm talking about: the pair of shoes that was such a bargain in the sale, but are actually a size too big. The gorgeous handbag that doesn't quite “go” with any of your clothes now you've brought it home. Or the skirt that looked exactly the same shade of green as your jacket in the shop, but now looks decidedly more blue now it's hanging in your wardrobe. And what about the necklace you popped into a drawer last summer and haven't worn since? Recycle! Gentlemen, I haven't forgotten you. When did you last wear that watch? Do you really need all three wallets you were given for your birthday? Will you ever get round to re-reading those books?

Recycle! And youngsters – there must be loads of toys and games that you're too grown up for now and are just taking up space on your bedroom floor or under your bed. Recycle! It's a win-win situation for all concerned. By donating your unwanted goods to us you will help to fund our animal projects in Competa and the surrounding villages, our shop customers will get a great bargain and fewer discarded items will clog up the local land-fill. At the same time you get the feel-good factor of supporting your local charity and the added bonus of de-cluttering your home. In Chinese Feng Shui, the flow of the energy is an important matter. The belief is that the more space the energy has to flow, the healthier a home will be. (Feng Shui books are available in our book section – just saying). So come on down to The Charity Shop at Avda de la Constitucion 59, Competa. We look forward to seeing you there! Thank you for your continued support. Megan Furniss (Action for Animals volunteer)

that will store up water, nutrition and carbohydrates to use to sustain themselves during aestivation. Growth will stop and the plant can even appear dead, but it is not! Many of our Mediterranean plants have adopted this habit and they will come into new growth in autumn, produce leaves, flowers and seed through the, relatively, mild winter and spring. They are 'topsy-turvy' with plants from cooler climates.

THAT AESTIVATING FEELING! Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh

W

e all know that feeling when the mercury edges over 35C - we just want to find as cool a corner as possible and laze the summer away. Everything becomes too much effort and the only sensible action seems to be to do nothing! Humans and other animals feel it too and, of course, many of our plants. This feeling is a process for survival in extreme conditions, a temporary inactive phase. Just as many plants, animals (and maybe some humans too!) hibernate during winter there are also some that become summer dormant – known as aestivation. The word stems from Latin aestasor summer and is also sometimes spelt estivate. When conditions become unfavourable because of high temperatures and aridness, - the hot, dry season –

40 The Grapevine

plant metabolism comes, virtually, to a standstill. Mother Nature provides them with the most important protection – dormancy. In order to avoid desiccation, they have various other protective devices to increase their likelihood of survival such as grey/white leaves to reflect some of the strength of the sun's rays; hairs and felted or very leathery leaves do the same thing and this also, coincidentally, makes them very resistant to insect attack. Needle-like leaves reduce transpiration and some plants have learnt to fold their leaves up or twist them for the same effect. Cacti and succulents are, of course, the masters of summer as are various trees with swollen trunks to store water, just like camels. There are also many other plants that will store up water,

Even the most skilled gardeners can be tempted into trying to produce lots of summer flowers – after all, it's the time we want our gardens to look their best. Northern Europeans, for example, are conditioned to expect their plants to look their best in summer – often, here, it can be very different. So it's important to know the plants that simply want to rest when the going gets tough! Summer irrigation, for some of our best-loved Mediterranean plants, can be detrimental and even prove fatal. Grouping plants according to their watering needs is one of the most vital jobs you can do in your garden and it should be the first step in any garden design. Don't mix these summer dormant plants with lush tropical plantings that are very demanding of water, for instance, – the two groupings will clash and only cause you problems. I often hear people saying that they cannot reduce the water to a specific plant because it is on a system with much more thirsty things. This is bad planning and bad design and it needs to be addressed to make your gardening life

simpler. Once you have sorted your plant groupings, generally into three types - dry, medium water requirements and heavy water requirements - you can then choose the plants and 'the look' that you desire within those groupings. In practise, it is often sensible to have plants with heavier water needs closer to the house and the dryarea plants further away. This, usually, works well in terms of looks and practicality. To help you do this, here are some of the plants that are summer dormant – expect them to look 'sad' during summer. Firstly there are those which go completely underground in summer and many of our bulbs, corms, rhizomes and fleshy rooters fall into this grouping. So things like

cyclamen, narcissi, tulips, acanthus, alstroemeria and capers. There are many others that simply stop growing and sleep through the hot summer season. Here are some: Abelia, abutilon, akebia, albizia, arctotis, artemisia, caesalpinia, campsis, ceanothus, cistus, clematis armandii, clematis montana, cordyline, coronilla, cytissus, dimorphotheca, echium, eleagnus, erythrina, euphorbia, fremontodendron, hypericum, indigofera, ipomoea indica, lantana, lavandula, lonicera, jasminum, lonicera, mahonia, melianthus, nerium oleander, olea, osmanthus, parthenocissus, photinia, pittosporum, prunus dulcis (almond), raphiolepsis, rosmarinus, salvia, solanum, tipuana, trachelospermum.

There are many, many more so please don't treat this list as definitive. I merely want to give you an idea of the vastness of the grouping, give hope to dry gardeners and let us all appreciate and relax into summer aestivation! Have a meltingly hot good summer and please remember that the Garden Centre is closed – or aestivating – during August. We'll be back in September, green, lush and burgeoning with autumn energy! AXAREDUCATION A Centre for Culture, Education and Learning

A

BRAND new venture in Competa is aiming to go to the top of the class.

Axareducacion is a soon to be unveiled centre for culture, education and learning. It is the brainchild of teachers Gemma Edelman and Beatriz Moreno Perz, and co-worker Manuel Vega Peña. The centre is aimed at ages from five through to adults and will encompass learning in all areas from primary to further education and degree level. I spoke with Gemma about this new venture in the village and their aims for the future. Initially she was approached by Beatriz to set up a bi-lingual nursery. However after further research the nursery in the area was deemed very good value for money and would have been hard to compete with. After lengthy discussions the two women hit on another idea: “There was no language school in the area or a wide selection of

46 The Grapevine

clubs and workshops for children and adults,” explained Gemma. “The initial idea expanded to more a mix of a Ludoteca combined with a centre of academic learning.” However, Gemma was keen to point out that the academic learning would be supported with fun workshops, games, films, theatre studies and conversational classes. The spacious venue will be split into a number of different areas including essential classrooms which will provide academic support to individuals or groups in all subjects to all ages. Secondly, these classrooms will be used as a base for a language school teaching both Spanish and English, (again all levels and all ages), both private and group lessons. This will also include exam preparation at all levels. “The language school will also deliver teaching in a number of fun ways and through different mediums including talks, tapas evenings, use of the internet, multi-media and interactive learning. There isn't only one

way to learn,” explained Gemma. As learning is often aided by talking to others, there is additional space for a more relaxed area with comfortable seating. This will provide an ideal location for conversational classes or relaxed talks. The final area in the premises is for creating the Ludoteca. This will be an area for toys and books and will be available for hire for birthdays and baby groups. Another plan is to run workshops there in music, dance and theatre. The aim is to keep costs as manageable as possible in order for the centre to be available to everyone. There will be discounts for advance bookings and family discounts. “We are working alongside the town hall in all aspects of this new development and are also in talks to offer free places for socially excluded families,” said Gemma. A whole host of other ideas are also being considered including a book club and a

monthly/quarterly newsletter. The newsletter would have an educational and cultural content with hints and tips for language learning, specialist weekend activities e.g. Saturday film night and popcorn evening! Between the three of them they are full of ideas, combined with intellect and extreme capability this centre should evolve successfully over time. I asked Gemma about the credential of those setting up the centre Firstly, Gemma herself is bilingual. She is English married to a Spaniard and has lived in Spain for 10 years. She has a joint honours degree in Spanish and Italian from Manchester University and previously taught in Italy. For the last 8 years she has been running a highly successful business teaching here in Competa. Her official DELE teaching qualifications

were gained 10 years ago and she has also gained TEFLE certificates in Business English, English to young learners and Large Classes. Beatriz is Spanish speaking some English and is academically gifted with a degree in primary education and 2 MAs, one of which deals with Child Psychology and the other in Developmental Problems of Newborns. She has also worked as the Head of Canillas de Albaida nursery, has given academic support to a number of children for various years as well as having completed a wide number of complementary courses within her field. The third member of the academic team is Manuel, who is Spanish and speaks very good English. He is a technical engineer in telecommunications and is setting up their website and is the centre's technical

brains! He will also provide classes in Maths, Physics and the Sciences and has teaching experience in these fields. It sounds an impressive line up for all educational needs but the underlying theme at all times is creating a fun centre accessible to all. Axareducation will open at the beginning of September. The premises are at the top of the village just down from the Balcon Hotel, (previously Voy Volando Pizzeria). Opening hours are 10.00 – 2.00pm and 4.00- 8.00pm Mon to Fri. with specialist activities on Saturday. It sounds a great plan and also much needed in Competa and The Grapevine wishes them all luck and support in their new venture.

PEÑA CICLISTA PUERTO CÓMPETA On December 23rd 2012 The Turkey Classic XIX was organized by cycling club VELENO and finished in Competa Plaza. Amongst two of the podium places were two locals thus giving them the idea of creating a club in Competa. So In January of this year a group of competenos with mountain bikes met and decided to form a club with no other attachments, no fees, no committee just a group of friends who want to ride. The plan was to leave the first Sunday of every month and to cover an official route. So since the beginning of this year that is what they have done! There is a lot of local support for this initiative along with private sponsors of the new kit which has been made in a colorful design symbolizing the union of this great group of friends. Currently the club continues to grow not only in membership but also in activities such as monthly youth rides (with parental permission and use of a helmet). The club is open to anyone who loves to cycle and they can be contacted through email or facebook puertocompeta@hotmail.es

Local News Noche Del Vino 2013 August 15th - Cómpeta

c

ómpeta is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiesta's in Cómpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine! The event pays homage to the town's patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia's most important yearly events. In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National

Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food. Over 300 litres of oil will be on hand to prepare migas, the traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol. Cómpeta sees more than 1,500 litres of wine shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cómpeta. Below you will find the program for the day and evening. Please also turn over to find out what bars and restaurants are around to eat and drink in throughout the day.

THE WORLD'S TOP TEN BEST (WORST) FAD DIET’S Cabbage soup, tapeworms and imaginary food - all healthy and effective ways to lose weight, if you believe the women's magazines.

T

he Cabbage Soup Diet. This classic diet is a must-try for every slimming masochist. Everyone knows that cabbage smells terrible but not only does this diet make you go to the toilet it makes you smell bad too! If you've been craving celibacy as well as IBS, and are prepared to eat unparalleled quantities of boiled cabbage, then this is the diet for you! The French Women Don't Get Fat Diet Hear that, ladies? No French woman has ever experienced the indignity of portliness, despite the fact that this is a nation that eats cake and cheese for breakfast and whose lunch boxes contain pig's head fried in butter. Apparently, this is because these women are able to enjoy the country's gourmet delicacies, such as baked camembert, in moderation, while spending every weekend subsisting on leek water (a mild diaretic). How the French have managed to combine faecal incontinence with a reputation for chicness remains one of life's great mysteries! The Lemon Detox Diet Starvation is the name of the game, with dieters replacing food with a lemon juice and maple syrup mixture that can ultimately rot your teeth and constipate you. This diet will not only make you unpopular when you visit restaurants but you are also unlikely to lose anything except water-weight before your body kicks into starvation mode

62 The Grapevine

and starts clinging onto every last molecule of fat. The Dukan Diet Offer someone on the Dukan Diet a sausage sandwich and they will probably reply "No. I'm on phase two of the Dukan Diet and can only eat pork on every second Wednesday providing it's a full moon." The reason for this is that the vagaries of the Dukan Diet and its various phases are harder to grasp than the most complex branches of theoretical physics. The Tapeworm Diet If you're one of those women with a big event coming up and are praying for a spot of slimming Norovirus to help you on your way. How exactly you're supposed to go about 'catching' a tapeworm, but once you've got one in it can apparently lead to a weight loss of 1-2 lbs per week. The Sleeping Beauty Diet This crackpot diet has been being peddled for over fifty years, on the basis that your body is forced to use up extra reserves of fat while you sleep. Perfect for the ultimate lazy dieter, it involves the bare minimum of effort and crops up regularly in newspapers and women's magazines. When taken to an extreme conclusion, however, this diet involves 24/7 sleeping following medicallyassisted sedation, in order to get your abs fairytale firm. Expect to awake from your three day Temazepam snooze to12lb lighter!!

The Hallelujah Diet The regime of choice for Biblebashers, this diet is based on something God apparently said in Genesis about how 85 per cent of your food should be raw and plantbased, or something (it's essentially veganism with added sanctimony). It's not the most balanced of diets, revolving as it does mostly around mung beans, and flagrantly ignores the fact that cooking kills off some of the bacteria that lives in food. God also later renegs on the veggie-deal by saying: "every living thing that moveth shall be meat for you", which basically means that you can go ahead and eat that tapeworm mentioned earlier. The Air Diet Aa couple of years ago French Grazia featured the Air Diet, an eating plan which involves noteating. Basically, you hold your food up to your mouth but instead of consuming it, you just pretend (to yourself and others) to be. It's a regime that sounds even less satisfying than the well-publicised Mastication Diet, involving involves chewing food before spitting it out. Whether or not the magazine were engaging in self-referential postmodern irony by covering this remains something of an unanswered question, but considering that the same article featured a recipe for "water soup" which apparently helps you "lose four dress sizes before the summer", we can only conclude the answer to be no. The Purple Diet This diet involves the unique consumption of only purple food ! The Liquid Diet This is the part where, after exhausting all dieting options, you drink two bottles of Pinot and four tequila shots, while weeping to your best friend about how your life is so miserable and devoid of joy and chocolate mousse! Next time you think of embarking on a fad diet, don't put yourself through it!

studio and gallery below the pool were incorporated into the plans and this is where Mitch now produces and exhibits his “Paintographs”. These are simply photographs manipulated on the computer to give them the appearance of a painting, Mitch believes that this process gives a photograph an added dimension. The subject matter is mostly around Competa, Archez, Salares and Canillas with occasional forays further afield. Being a musician himself Mitch is particularly interested in Flamenco dancers and musicians, which feature strongly in his present collection. As well as at his home gallery, you can see some of his work at an exhibition at Bar Cerezo in Canillas de Albaida from July 2 - Sept 30 (closed Mondays), Todo Papel and La Boutique in Competa and his Moroccan work at the Teteria Hierbabuena in Competa. Prices are €60 for a framed print and €30 print only for easy transportation if you are on holiday or want to take a print to another country, (prints fit Ikea A4 or A3 frames which you can buy in virtually any country).

PAINTOGRAPHY BY MITCH FRANCE Paintography is the art of manipulating a photograph on the computer until it resembles a painting

About the Paintographer

M

itch France was born in Salford, near Manchester in the UK in 1953 and attended Salford Art College for several years before following a career in graphic design with advertising agencies and design studios in the Manchester area. At the age of 28 Mitch moved to Yorkshire and set up his own graphic design company with his wife, Chris. With a small staff of 6 the company worked for clients such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Richmond College, the Co-Op and several holiday companies including Virgin Holidays, for whom the company designed and produced more than 50 brochures over a 12 year period. In the course of producing these brochures Chris and Mitch travelled extensively to Malta, Spain, France, Mallorca and the East and West coasts of America to photograph the various resorts, hotels, villas and local life for inclusion in the brochures. As a natural extension to the travel photography undertaken for his company, Mitch now spends his time capturing images in the villages and countryside in and around his home town of Canillas de Albaida. Chris and Mitch moved to Spain 9 years ago and renovated a townhouse in Canillas in which to live while building a house in the campo just outside the village and moved into Finca Estrellas 5 years ago.
