Competa became international news as a fire destroyed forest land in and around the village where I live. The fire came very close to many homes and caused damage to a small number. People were evacuated from their houses as firefighting went on from 1.00pm to the following morning. Personally we didn't suffer any damage; however our villa faces towards Competa, so we watched the events unfold throughout the day with fire moving from one side of the village to the other. I understand no one was hurt thankfully, however we do feel for those who have to deal with any resulting damages. I think the outcome would have been very different without the tireless work of the Fire Services, both in the air and on the ground. The Mayor of the village has issued a statement to the people of Competa expressing his thanks and outlining future plans and preventative actions as a result of the devastating fire. This statement can be found on page 54 of this month's magazine. Also, there is more support from Lorraine Cavanagh, who is offering a discount to those whose gardens were affected in the fire, when she re-opens the garden centre in September. Despite the fire and damages, Competa continues with its annual festival, Noche Del Vino on the 15th August which promises to be a fab celebration. More information about the day and evening and where to watch the action can be found on pages 55 through to 58. Please come and support the village of Competa on this great day. Enjoy and keep reading The Editor

NEWS IN SPAIN News from around Spain

S

panish women are angry about European handball rules that force female players to wear skimpy bikinis accusing sports officials of using their bodies to "lure people to the sport". Under regulations set by the European Handball Federation, female beach handball players have to wear bikini tops and bottoms that are no wider than four inches (10cm) "to leave their stomachs exposed". Players can face penalties for covering up and the row flared up after officials warned the Spanish Handball Federation that 21 of 22 female teams playing in a tournament were wearing team kits that covered up the body too much. Spain's Basque Handball Association has presented an official complaint to the European Commission to have the rules changed because male players are allowed to wear clothing that is "loose and long".

uffalo’ Bill Hillman, coauthor of 'Fiesta: How to Survive the Bulls of Pamplona', sustained mild injuries during the Running of the Bulls festival. The co-author of a recently-published book on how to survive the annual bull-running San Fermín festival in northern Spain, was himself gored. A Red Cross spokesman added that Chicago resident Mr Hillman, 32, was gored twice in his right thigh during the traditional earlymorning dash through the twisting mediaeval cobbled streets in Pamplona, where "pilgrims" in red-and-white garb run ahead of six 100st bulls. His condition was described as “less serious”.

A

round 500 people from around las Colmenillas and Cruz del Monte region of Competa were evacuated from their homes as high winds fanned a blaze that destroyed 100 hectares of forest land and

threatened homes around Competa. The alert was raised at 1pm in the area of Llano de Alberto. The winds combined with high temperatures made the fire rapidly spread towards homes in las Colmenillas. The critical point of the fire was reached at around 4.30 pm when the flames reached Cruz del Monte urbanisation and came perilously close to three houses. In total 18 firefighting aircraft – including two amphibious aircraft of the Ministry of the Environment and two helicopters – and 200 members of the emergency services on the ground – divided in 16 different groups – were drafted in to fight the fire and try to protect property. There were also five reinforcement brigades (Brica), nine fire engines, a meteorology and transmissions unit, a fire analysis unit and medical personnel. By 6pm the flames were under control with firefighters remaining on the scene in case the high winds fanned the fire back to life. In fact, one of their main concerns was keeping the flames from fully spreading to the Sierras Tejeda Natural Park and Almijara. This was the worst fire to break out in the municipality in the last 40 years.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS NEWS UPDATE Well done Kevin!

F

rom the beginning of August, we'll be starting an exciting new fundraising project. We're creating an amazing new space where you can sell your items and help Action for Animals at the same time. Here's how it works. If you have something to sell valued at €50 or more, we can put it on display in front of hundreds of shoppers each week. We'll also advertise your items for sale on our popular Facebook page to reach an even wider audience. You won't have to field phone calls from prospective buyers or have hoards of strangers wandering through your home to view what you have for sale. When we sell your goods then we'll split the proceeds and you'll receive 75% of the sale price. So

8 The Grapevine

imagine that we sell your fridge for €80 then you'll receive €60 while the remaining €20 will help us to continue our important work. It's a great way for you to sell your expensive items and help our charity too. The items we expect to sell include white goods, furniture, jewellery, musical instruments, sports equipment and artwork. Basically, if it fits through our door we'll sell it on your behalf. We already have many items on sale in our new space: a fabulous king-size bed with leather headboard and tailboard, a child's wooden highchair, a travel cot, pushchairs and a rocking horse, a Chesterfield style office chair, an enamel bath tub, a treadmill and... a cuddly toy!

Finally this month we'd like to thank seven year-old Kevin – Cómpeta's very own junior Richard Branson – for showing remarkable entrepreneurial spirit by making and selling loom bracelets and donating part of the proceeds to Action for Animals. You can buy one of Kevin's bracelets at Cómpeta's Petshop Angelino. Well done Kevin. We'll see you soon on The Apprentice! Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. WEIRD AND WONDERFUL Strange News from Around the World

anishing excess sugar and salt from diets is a goal for many but the thought of bland, tasteless food often puts off people from ditching the additives. But researchers at Oxford University believe you can have your cake and eat it, simply by listening to sounds which increase the sense of taste. It has been dubbed ‘sonic seasoning’ and works by tricking the brain into perceiving that a flavour is more salty, sweet or sour than it actually is. Charles Spence, professor of experimental psychology at Oxford University, believes that it could allow cooks to cut down on unhealthy ingredients without losing any of the richness. “It would definitely work in the short term,” he said, “You could make a dish appear up to 10 per cent more sweet or salty through sounds, which could be big enough to have a health impact.

passers-by, are baffled as to how it got there. Initially, the Scottish SPCA officers thought it was a joke but, on investigation, discovered it was a long-dead crocodile more than four-feetlong, which someone had tried to stuff. The crocodile was more than four-feet-long and has since been identified as a West African dwarf crocodile. It is not known how old the reptile was, or how it had died. “I first thought it was a prank when I received a call saying there had been sightings of a crocodile but when I investigated I found it was real," said SSPCA inspector Heather Lawson, who collected it.

T

he US Secret Service is looking to develop a Twitter sarcasm detector. The agency wants the software to help it judge whether to take specific threats on social media seriously. In a tender notice posted online, the agency is offering a contract for analytics software with the "ability to detect sarcasm and false positives". It will also collect everything from the emotions of internet users to old Twitter messages. Ed Donovan,

xperts at Harvard have confirmed a 19th century book held in one of the prestigious university's libraries is bound in human skin. A series of tests by scientists and conservators on Houghton Library’s copy of the French writer Arsene Houssaye's Des destinees de l'ame concluded with 99.9% certainty that the binding material "is of human origin". According to the library, the novelist presented the volume, described as "a meditation on the soul and life after death", to one of his bookloving friends. Dr Ludovic Bouland bound the book with skin taken from the back of an unclaimed body of a female mental patient who had died of a stroke, according to researchers. Dr Bouland left a note in the volume explaining what he had done.He wrote: "A book about the human soul deserved to have a human covering." After carrying out tests on the tome, Bill Lane, the director of the Harvard Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Resource Laboratory, said: "The analytical data, taken together with the provenance of Des destinées de l’ame, make it very unlikely that the source could be other than human.”

The Conservative lawmaker was having trouble answering a question about East German washing machines. But his call for help went unanswered after he was twice diverted to Ms Merkel's voicemail. Towards the end of the show, Mr Bosbach received a message from the German leader apologising for not picking up.

THE VETIVER GRASS SYSTEM Erosion problems solved.

T

his month I interviewed a really interesting couple from Sayalonga, Dave and Anna. Seven years ago they moved to Sayalonga. Anna is from Zimbabwe and Dave is from America. They came here and decided to retire in Spain. Despite being well travelled, Spain was somewhere they had never considered living in actual fact they were regular visitors to Italy. However, after their first visit to Spain they were hooked! They enjoyed the people, the lifestyle, the standard of living, the wine and food, along with prices to match. They found their villa in the campo of Sayalonga and it was already appropriately named Casa Anna. Over the last 7 years they have beautifully developed and reformed the house and garden. When they terraced their garden they were faced with an erosion problem on one of the terraces.

22 The Grapevine

The entire terrace was slipping. After extensive research to find an easy and cost effective solution to the problem Anna came across Vetiver Grass. Both of them were keen not to have retaining walls, as they believed not only that they would be expensive but also not an attractive feature amongst all the beautiful and different garden settings they were creating. Initially, Anna tried to find the Vetiver grass in Spain but the representative never returned her call. Anna, finally found the grass with a supplier in Italy and ordered 100 plants. The plants cost them 1 euro each and the shipping from Italy was 40 euro. When she received the plants they did look half dead but despite that she still planted them about 30 cm apart in the crack that was forming on one of the terraces. To get the plants established they did lay some irrigation and now these plants have been growing for over 3

years. They have no erosion problems at all on that initial terrace and they no longer need to water the grass. After 3 years of growth the plants are now ready for harvesting and as a result they are now selling the plants to individuals with great success. They sell the plants for 1 euro each. The grass needs no special soil, fertilizer, or care. To plant a slip (one stalk) you just make a small hole, and put the slip in and water it to get it started. There is nothing labour intensive. The plants are planted approximately 25-30 cm apart depending on the amount of erosion. So the approximate cost for 30 meters is between 100 and 125 Euros, a very cost effective way of stopping erosion. The Vetiver Grass can handle a great deal of water, no water at all, and even salt water once established. The roots grow 3 meters deep in one year and the roots have the strength of 1.6 mil steel. The Vetiver Grass will resolve an erosion problem anywhere. Dave and Anna have been growing these for approximately 3 years and have over 50,000 plants with new plantings every week. They have no erosion where the plants are. They are selling these plants not because they need the money but because it simply does work and they are excited about it and want to help those that have any type of erosion problems. Also, interesting to note, since the recent fire around Competa, the Vetiver grass is fire tolerant; it is almost indestructible, as it has the ability to withhold extreme environmental conditions. If you would like to find out more see the advert opposite, visit their website www.vetiverspain.com or give Dave or Anna a call to see the grass in their gardens, they would be more than happy for you to pop around. climbing atop one another, in order to be the one to pull down the ham. With this victory, the tomato-throwing begins.

LA TOMATINA Last Wednesday in August

L

a Tomatina is a festival held on a Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region in Spain . Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a harmless battle where more than one hundred metric tons of overripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The week long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest. Approximately 30,000 people come to the tomato fight,

multiplying by several times Buñol’s normal population of 9,000. There are not many accommodations for people who come to La Tomatina , and thus many participants stay in Valencia and travel by bus or train to Buñol, about 38 km outside the city. In preparation for the dirty mess that will ensue, shopkeepers cover their storefronts in order to protect them from the carnage. At around 11 a .m., the first event of the Tomatina begins. A ham is placed upon a cockaigne pole (a large, greased pole), and the tomato fight can begin only when someone is able to climb to the top and bring it down. People struggle against each other,

Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of the cannon, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself. Those who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle. It is highly frowned upon to tear someone else’s clothing. Somewhere between an hour and two hours, the fighting ends and the cannon is fired once more to signal the end. At this point no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. People find water to wash themselves, most likely at the Buñol River.

SOMONTANO WINE FESTIVAL The first weekend in August

T

he regulatory council of the Somontano Designation of Origin is responsible for promotion of the region in a number of ways. One of the most successful is the organisation of the Somontano Wine Festival, which is inextricably linked to local wine, gastronomy and culture. The philosophy of the festival is brought to life every year during the first week of August. Its

programme focuses on four music concerts over the four nights of the event plus a Gastronomic Extravaganza where visitors can try a wide range of quality wines alongside exquisite tapas made from local products, from nine in the evening until the early hours. During the day there are various wine tasting courses and visits to wineries available and visitors have a chance to enjoy sporting activities, explore the historic and

artistic heritage of the area or even just to relax with a number of alternative leisure interests. Thanks to the Somontano Wine Festival, Barbastro has enjoyed concerts by artists such as Joaquín Cortés, Chayanne, Luz Casal, Rocío Jurado, Miguel Bosé, The Georgia Mass Choir, The Supremes, Sara Baras, Juanes, Amaral, Julio Iglesias, Víctor Manuel and Ana Belén, Estopa, Joaquín Sabina, Melendi, David Bisbal, Joe Cocker, Bonnie Tyler, the Abba show….

SPAIN’S SUMMER SWEETHEART Spanish watermelons beat the heat

T

here are few fruits that announce the arrival of summer quite as sweetly and cheerfully as the watermelon. While it is typically available from late Spring to mid-Fall, this juicy fruit makes its grandest appearance in early Summer, cropping up in markets, on menus and at every hot-weather event imaginable. It turns out that Spain is not only enjoying this bountiful crop at home, but is also exporting it all over Europe, thus proving to what extent watermelon is, in fact, Spain’s summer sweetheart. Some say that the best way to choose a good watermelon is to tap on its rind with a couple of fingers and listen for a hollow sound. Others insist that you only have to pick one up and confirm that it is relatively heavy to know that it will be ripe and juicy within. Although watermelons are easily cultivated in greenhouses and are therefore available year-round in Spain, they are mostly grown on large outdoor farms. During the summer season, be assured that almost any Spanish watermelon you pick at the market will be sweet and refreshing, juicy and crisp.

46 The Grapevine

Thought to have originated in Africa, watermelon, or sandía, as the fruit is called in Spanish, have been traced to both the Kalahari Desert (Namibia and Botswana) and the Nile River Valley (Egypt), where its seeds have been discovered in Pharaonic tombs. The fruit was most likely brought to Spain by the Moors around the 13th century. Whatever its origins, there is no doubt that the plant was well adapted to the hot, dry climate of the Mediterranean coastal area. With an annual production of approximately 850,000 metric tons in 2010, Spain is one of the world’s largest producers of this cosmopolitan fruit. The country’s most important cultivation areas include Murcia, Almería and Valencia, with each region accounting for approximately 30% of total production. Watermelons are also grown in the autonomous regions of Castile-La Mancha and Andalusia. The watermelon, is actually a berry with a thick, smooth rind and a fleshy interior that grows on a flowering vine. While most people think of watermelons as having green rinds and rosy centers, they can actually range

Another important distinction is whether or not watermelons have seeds. In Spain, the most common seeded varieties include Crimson Sweet, Sugar Baby, Resistant, Early Star and Dulce Maravilla. In general, these are large, round watermelons that have an almost black-green rind and red interior. Traditionally, this is what Spaniards think of when they think of watermelons. As far as seedless varieties go, the most significant include Reina de Corazones, Apirena, Pepsin and Jack, all of which tend to have a lighter green, streaked exterior and either a brilliant red or yellow flesh. Although both seeded and seedless varieties are cultivated and consumed in Spain, the market for seedless watermelons really seems to be taking off. Cooperative associations such as Anecoop and Asociación Grupo Fashion (AGF), which promote and represent Spanish watermelon producers, are betting on the continuing strength of this growing industry by investing in new lines of research, innovation and marketing, albeit through different approaches. Whether you eat it prepared in a recipe, or recently carved and dripping juicily down your chin, there are more than enough reasons why Spanish watermelon consistently appears on menus and tables as soon as the weather turns hot. As a sweet and refreshing treat, gastronomic ingredient, healthy snack or successful commodity, Spanish watermelon has proved it has what it takes to “beat the heat”!

Local News Noche Del Vino 2014 August 15th - Cómpeta

c

ómpeta is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap.

One of the most popular annual fiesta's in Cómpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine! The event pays homage to the town's patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia's most important yearly events. In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food. Over 300 litres of oil will be on hand to prepare migas, the traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol. Cómpeta sees more than 1,500 litres of wine shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cómpeta.

PLAZA ALMIJARA 11:00 The day begins with solemn mass in the honour of Our Lady of the Assumption in the parish church in the Plaza Almijara . PLAZA DE LA VENDIMIA 12.00 Traditional Treading of the Grapes 13.00 Awards ceremoy 14:00 Traditional free lunch of Migas, Bacaleo, salad, grapes and wines of Competa.. 15:30 Concert All day there is a traditional Medieval market from the Plaza Almijara to Plaza Vendimia During the day entertainment will be provided by local dance and music groups. I thought, "That's unlikely... It's a basic skill, isn't it?”

I gave my wife £50 and told her to go out on Thursday and not come back until the football was finished. "I won't need that much," she laughed. "You will," I said. "It's got to last you five weeks.”

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. Bit unfair of Glastonbury to put Dolly Parton on at 5pm on a Sunday, given her strict working hours. What gets bigger every time I see my wife?

box, but the one it came in was bigger.

After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off.

Statistically, you are more likely to be bitten by Luis Suarez than a shark

“Because," he said "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.”

I have the attention of a goldfish.

There was a man who entered a local paper's pun contest.. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

My wife.

I've decided never to buy anything off the Internet again, after getting conned last week.

It's been watching me for several minutes now.

I ordered what was supposed to be the world's largest cardboard

When I left home, my mum said, "Don't forget to write."

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Summer Reading - 50 Shades of Grey, Silver and Blue, part 2

F

ollowing on from last month´s sultry read, let´s look specifically at some 50 plants that fall into the grey, silver, blue category and that you will be able to find here and use if your heat and drought resistant gardens: Starting big, some of the best trees would be: Olea Europea, our beloved olive has to be, of course, top of our list. You´ve only to look at them marching across hot dry plains to understand their resistance. An absolute classic and try tea made from the leaves too. Cupressus Arizonica, the Arizona cypress has lovely silvery grey needles and is, probably, the toughest conifer you can buy even happy in salt-laden coastal positions. It will reach some 15m high with a 5m spread. Eucalyptus species are often much maligned but they have their place and a multitude of uses. Throw a few leaves in a bowl of boiling water and breathe in the relaxing and clearing

vapour. And, of course, many of the acacia or mimosa family have greyish foliage, especially the lovely acacia baileyana. Palms are having a downturn in popularity because of the dreaded palm weevil but there are some stunning blue-grey ones and, if you only have one, it is feasible to protect it. Try the Mexican blue palm, brahea armata, smallish at 12m and slow growing but beautiful with its striking silver grey fan leaves. Butia capitata, the jelly palm, is another candidate though not so grey. It´s strongly arching leaves have a grey-blue backing and the fruits (jellies) are edible with an apricot flavour. There are lots of grey/blue shrubs, so I´ll give you some of those that I consider to be the best. Eleagnus ebbingei Silver Leaved is commonly known as oleaster or silverberry. Its leaves are heavily felted in silver and tan and it has strongly perfumed creamy flowers in springtime. To around 3m high

but happy to be pruned. Buddleja Davidii is the commonly known butterfly bush. If you need something big and extremely tough then this is the one for you. With silver-backed leaves and flower spikes beloved by butterflies, it can reach 3m high but should be hard pruned at least yearly. Acca sellowiana or feijoa has a perfectly descriptive common name, the pineapple guava bush from the exotic flavour of its fruits. Often toughness is always associated with extreme prettiness but this shrub wins on all counts. It´s sage green, silverybacked leaves perfectly set off the coral- coloured flowers which are also edible and look stunning on a salad. But if you want fruits, don´t eat too many of those flowers! Juniperus communis is that shrub/small tree adored by gin lovers and game eaters – those pungent juniper berries add such a distinctive flavour, there is nothing to match it. It has the largest growing range of any woody plant, found in the extremes of the Artic and through the Americas, Europe and Asia. With such a wide range of growing habitat, as you might expect its form, too, is often very variable. It can spread and sprawl or grow up to 10m tall. The world of herbs is full of greys, especially those Mediterranean types. Lavender and sage spring straight to mind but there are many others. Catmint or the nepeta species are softly rounded and grey-green – it´s the one that most cats love to curl up in! The artemisias, more colourfully known as wormwood, are great in our gardens too. As well as traditionally dispelling worms, they are now better known for flavouring drinks such as vermouth and absinthe. Sticking on vices, the opium poppy, papaver somniferum, has lovely glaucous leaves and seedpods and the seeds, of course, are used in baking – without getting stoned! Helichrysum italicum is commonly called the curry plant

because of the strong smell of its fine grey leaves and santolina chamaecyparissus or cotton lavender is another small silvery ornamental. Many sages are great drought resistant plants but the so-called Russian sage, perovskia atriplicifolia is not a true sage and, indeed, looks more like lavender but – whatever – it´s great with its fine silvery foliage and purple-blue flower spikes. If you like something spiky and architectural there´s nothing to beat the globe artichoke, cynara cardunculus that perennial vegetable with stunning looks! Moving to perennials, I like crambe or sea kale with its unusual grey-green leaves and mounds of small white flowers. It was once popular as a vegetable and it´s a great plant for a seaside position. Softer and much more tactile is stachys byzantina, silky like lambs lugs, the spreading helichrysum petiolare known as the licquorice plant and tradescantia sillamontana, known as white velvet for obvious

reasons. All of these make great ground cover in impossibly hot spots as will snow-in-summer, cerastium tomentosum. And, at the opposite end of the scale, for pure impact the towering mulleins, or verbascums, are hard to beat. We have in stock verbascum chaixii with yellow flowers and green leaves but there is also verbascum chaixii album with greyer foliage and white flowers. And we have the lovely verbascum Caribbean Crush with triangular silver-grey felted leaves and tall spikes of flowers in a great blend of mango, mellow yellow, soft peachy apricot and muted plum – a combo that will really get your mouth watering on a hot August day! Enjoy your summer and we´ll be back with you on 2nd September. p.s. Because I´ve been so struck by the devastation caused by the fire we´ve decided at the Garden Centre to help you all we can. Cudeca volunteers take to the streets with sunflowers, the international symbol for palliative care, shaking collection tins across fifteen cities and towns throughout the Malaga province; Alhaurin, Estepona, Fuengirola, Malaga, Nerja and Torremolinos to name but a few. This year, for the first time, we held the campaign in Competa on Saturday, 21st June. I, together with my fantastic helpers; Debi Bond, Elaine Greer and Meadow Brookes approached market stalls, shops, restaurants and bars where everyone of all nationalities; locals, residents and tourists generously filled our tins. We raised an amazing amount, 315.48 euros. Thank you all so much. Cindy Jones, Cudeca Volunteer, Competa. TORRE DEL MAR BEACH FESTIVAL The Weekend Beach Festival in Torre del Mar was hailed a success. The event far exceeded expectations, attracting 37,000 people, more than 7,000 on July 3 and more than 15,000 on July 4 and 5. The economic impact of the festival is estimated to be between €1 and €2 million and each visitor is believed to have spent on average €50. However, no official figures have been released yet. The first edition of the Weekend Beach Festival closely resembled other pioneering summer events held in Spain – like Esparrago Rock in Granada – with a myriad of musical acts which would please some of the most demanding audiences and draw thousands from Spain’s autonomous communities. This year’s line-up included bands like

Les Castizos, Los Zigarros, Muchachito y sus compadres and Mago de Oz. Legions of music fans flocked to Torre del Mar from as far away as Madrid, Extremadura and Salamanca, looking to quench their thirst for music, sun, drinks and fun. “Starting from today, Velez Malaga Council will work towards organising the second edition of the Weekend Beach Festival to consolidate it next year and turn it into one of the best in Spain,” said Velez- Malaga Mayor Francisco Delgado Bonilla. “We have worked for a full year on the event. We are pleased with how it turned out. It was a great weekend of harmony, leisure and entertainment,” he added.
