PROPERTY VALUES IN AND AROUND NERJA HAVE OUTPERFORMED MOST OF SPAIN AND APPEARS TO BE ONE OF THE FIRST REGIONS TO SEE VALUES IMPROVE. It is amazing to think that according to Tinsa, one of Spain´s leading property valuation and survey companies that whilst prices are still falling there are real signs of improvement in certain areas. Their report “Coastal Homes 2105” reveals that in many areas close to the sea, the price adjustment is gradually slowing down and, although still a minority, there are areas where there are signs of recovery in both prices and building activity. Their report covered 140 areas along the coast and found rising prices in just a quarter of them. Amongst the price rises in Malaga province were Nerja, Estepona, Casares and Manilva, a stark comparison to the 29 areas that are still in double digit free fall. “There is no doubt that we are more or less at the bottom of the cycle, now is certainly a great time to buy” says Geoff Cheshire from the Team Group. “We are seeing strong performances from both our inland and coastal businesses. Inland-property ( www.inland-property.com ) is recruiting more inland villas than ever before in and around the Frigiliana and Torrox valleys as well as in Viñuela and Alcaucin whilst Team España ( www.teamespana.com ) is busy signing coastal villas and apartments from Torrox to Almuñecar”. Demand from British buyer's remains strong which will likely remain the case whilst the euro is under pressure at the prospect of a Greek exit. sentence that in this case, legally obligating the vendor to sell the product clashed “with the concept advocated by [the pharmacist] regarding the right to life.” However, the court upheld the sanction related to the pharmacy’s refusal to sell condoms, stating that it saw there “no conflict of conscience with constitutional relevance”. It was a tight decision by the court, with several magistrates disagreeing with the final ruling.

panish police rescued a week-old baby after it was dumped in an underground rubbish container near Madrid. The baby, which was stuffed into a plastic bag inside a rucksack, was found by two officers from the Spanish Civil Guard in Mejorada del Campo. The Civil Guard sent out a tweet with the good news, alongside a photograph of the two officers, Carlos and Andres, holding the baby in their arms. The picture was retweeted thousands of times by Spaniards, who flocked to social media to praise the officers for the rescue. The officers took the baby to Henares hospital while the Civil Guard tries to establish its parents' identities and how it came to be found in a rubbish container.

E

ight elderly residents have died and eleven others were injured as a fire swept through a nursing home just outside the northeastern city of Zaragoza.Regional Interior Ministry spokesman Gustavo Alcalde said the cause of the fire, which broke out, is still unknown and was being investigated. Mr Alcalde said one of the nursing home's caretakers was also hospitalised. One man with serious burns is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, regional health spokesman Sebastian Celeya said, adding the others are suffering from smoke inhalation. The fire appears to have started in a first-floor bedroom of the three-

Spanish pharmacy that was fined for refusing to sell women morning-after pills has been told that its right to “ideological freedom” was violated by the sanction. The regional health authorities of Andalusia, in southern Spain, fined the pharmacy in Seville €3,000 (£2,130) in 2008, because it sold neither the emergency contraceptive morning-after pill nor condoms. Spanish pharmacies are required by law to provide both, with no prescription required. However, the constitutional court has overturned the decision on appeal. It took into account the fact that the owners of the pharmacy in question were officially registered as “conscientious objectors” on issues where they see a professional conflict between the law and their own beliefs. Apparently drawing a parallel between the morning-after pill and abortion, the court ruled in its sentence that in

Spanish nun with a social conscience would ordinarily be expected to help underprivileged children in her community, or perhaps do missionary work in the developing world. But Teresa Forcades from the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat, near Barcelona, is no ordinary sister. A Harvardeducated doctor in public health, she has clashed with medical orthodoxy with her outspoken views on vaccines. She is a devoted member of the Catholic Church, but has written critically about the institution as misogynistic and uncaring. Now Ms Forcades is taking a step further and is moving into frontline politics. Her new Holy Grail is to unite Catalonia’s left-wing parties to bring about not only an independent state, but one that is as free of the ravages of global capitalism as it is of interference from Madrid.

Cómpeta campo. At first, we thought he was probably lost but as he had no microchip, his owners couldn't be traced and sadly, nobody came forward to report him as lost. He's currently being fostered by a family who have kindly agreed to keep him if his previous owners can't be found. Do you recognise him?

ACTION FOR ANIMALS August News

L

ast month we extended our Trap-Neuter-Return project to the nearby village of Sayalonga, where we're financing the neutering of the cats you may have seen as you pass by the bins there, on the road up to Cómpeta. We've been providing food for them for some time, but now we hope to get them all neutered, in order to stabilise the numbers in the existing colony. Trap-Neuter-Return is the humane and effective approach for stray and feral cats. Scientific studies show that Trap-Neuter-Return improves the lives of feral cats and decreases the size of colonies over time. Cats are humanely trapped and taken to a veterinarian to be neutered. After recovery, the cats are returned to their home - their colony - outdoors. Action for Animals has been using the TrapNeuter-Return method for over 7 years in Cómpeta and has

also financed neutering projects in our neighbouring villages of Canillas de Albaida, Archez, Sedella, Salares and as far away as Alhama de Granada. We will continue this work for as long as it's needed. A few weeks ago, we were contacted by a lady in Cómpeta who was unable to keep her little ginger kitten Coco and asked if we could help her find a new home for him. Fortunately, a few days previously, Ana, one of our regular charity shop customers, had generously offered to rehome a kitten should we need to find a home for one in the future. A couple of phone calls later and Coco is now settling comfortably into his lovely new home, with Ana. Now that's what I call synchronicity! And now we'd like to ask for your help, for the animals pictured here.

Goldie, the labrador is currently living in Cómpeta, but his owners can no longer keep him. He's one year old, castrated, fully vaccinated and chipped. If you're able to offer him a new home, please contact us.If you'd like more information about any of these animals, please call into the shop or ring Nina on the number below. Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. Summer opening hours: 10.00 13.30 Monday to Saturday. BAR AMALIA OPENS IN ARCHEZ Dot is back cooking!

L

ast month Bar Amalia in Archez was opened by Dot Barrett. Dot is by no means a stranger to the community having lived in the village for around 11 years and is married to the local English electrician Mike. Just before Dot and Mike moved to Spain they ran a Restaurant, Bar and Motel business in the Lincolnshire Wolds near Skegness. Dot was the chef serving both traditional pub food in the busy restaurant and fine dining at the weekends. It wasn’t unusual for Dot to cook for 90 to100 covers over the weekend. The Restaurant was so successful they bought a pub in the next village and ran both places at the same time! It was always Dots dream to have a restaurant as she loves cooking and has gained Diplomas in both professional cooking and catering. Initially she was employed as a PA

18 The Grapevine

to an MD of a large international group and attended corporate events where her love of cooking was well known so she was often invited into the kitchens of large hotels and shown around. Dot was also able to put her love of cooking into actual practice as she regularly entertained Mike’s clients at home. However, as soon as they were in a position to buy their own restaurant and the kids were older they fulfilled their dream of owning their own business and Dot could cook every day! As a result of both business being successful Dot and Mike were incredibly busy leaving very little times for themselves and each other so they decided to slow down and retire to Spain. They settled in Archez and renovated a town house which kept them busy for a while. However, it wasn’t long before Dot was bored and looked to cooking to occupy the gap. Dot

became well known in Archez for her fabulous Jams and chutneys then cakes and scones and more recently for her frozen meals, which she delivered locally. At the beginning of the year they decided it was time once again to take on their own place as retirement and even semi retirement didn’t suit them! They were aware of Bar Amalia being up for rent and with its fabulous views and different seating, eating and drinking areas they thought it would be the perfect all year round place to take on. Dot explained they had to make a considerable investment, new kitchen, washer, cooker and utensils along with make the place brighter, lighter and more modern than before. So last month they finally opened Bar Amalia which they hope offers a place to dine, drink and relax in the lovely village of Archez with great views of the countryside. The Bar is separate to the dining areas and there is English television in the bar which will show the latest sporting events. However, the best bit is the food! Dot is back in the kitchen doing what she loves with a menu to appeal to all nationalities, from Shnitzel to Indian food alongside traditional Spanish favourites. Every week there are 4 to 5 specials which are changed every Friday evening giving you a reason to keep coming back to try something different. Along with a full menu you can also stop by for a snack, breakfast or tea and homemade cakes or scones. Sunday Lunch is also proving successful and this runs alongside their normal menu and specials board. Dot will continue her frozen meals business and this will operate out of the bar along with anything you want as takeaway on the menu. Also, her jams and chutneys can be bought that are on display in the bar which is called her Country Kitchen. Dot is pleased to be back cooking and welcomes you to her restaurant and hopes you enjoy her meals as much as she has enjoyed preparing it.

WE HAVE 24 HOURS IN A DAY IN WHICH TO WORK, REST AND PLAY How might we use this time to live optimally?

W

e use or at least we should use a third of this time for sleep, to heal and repair the body and mind. Less than 8 hours leads us to the path of mental and physical decline. A full nights' sleep engendering a sense of energetic well being is a perfect way to carpe diem. Fuelling and feeding the body might take 2 hours; eating whole fresh ripe raw plants, the very best food, takes the digestion and therefore the body and mind to an entirely new level of health and happiness. Exercising the body ten percent of the day; 2 1/2 hours to try running, walking very briskly, hiking, swimming, rebounding, resistance

training. The body is made for movement, failing to use our bones and muscles creates aches pains and incapacity, mistakenly taken as the normal ageing process, yet we know that folk well into their 90's can do all of the aforegoing. Half an hour of personal grooming ; washing, towelling, brushing, stroking the skin and hair feels wonderful. Clearing and calming the mind with meditation or stillness, learning to let go and accept life as it happens for just an hour will keep a sense of balance, a sensation that all is very well. Who has not quietly watched the sun rise or seen the sunset and been utterly fulfilled and at peace?

Focused talking and being with people and perhaps animals for 1 hour. Spending time with those we like and love keeps us anchored and connected to the reality of belonging to our family however and whatever we perceive it to be. 7 hours to 'work' or earn money. If we are not enjoying a large part of our day, we will be unbalanced, and being out of kilter leads to dis-ease and sickness. We need to ask have we made deals with ourselves that we will just do this work for a limited time to pay for whatever? How is this working out? Can we have 'enough' money without needing to spend time that is at odds with our spirit? Is there actually such a thing as 'enough money'? If we are sensible our work will entail doing what we love, and if we are loving our life, happiness and health abound. Jane Gudge

DESAFIO DX2 HALF IRONMAN TRIATHLON GRANADA 2015 Swim like your going to drown, Ride like you stole it and Run like they are chasing you.

O

nly after signing up were we told that it is considered one of the toughest triathlons in Spain. The race consisted of a 2km swim in a reservoir in the picturesque village of Güejar Sierra, a 2km run to collect our bikes from the local sports hall (transition 1) An 80k bike ride up to the village of Pradollano, the main ski resort in the Sierra Nevada. And finally into transition 2 where we dumped the bikes and donned our trainers for a 19k run around the ski slopes above Pradollano to the finish line. First some background information, Jansen Riley and myself (Steve Twiselton) both live in Competa, we competed in our first triathlon in October last year in Malaga. The distance was a lot shorter. It consisted of a 750 metre swim, 20K bike ride and a 5k run, but none the less it was still a very tough race as it is considered a sprint event. After that race it's fair to say we both had the bug and signed up for a number of races in Andalucia in the first half of 2015. In all the

To advertise call 637 028 873

events the triathletes start off at the same time however beforehand competitors are grouped into various classifications depending on age and sex. My group is the 40-50 male category known as Veteran 1 or Masters. I prefer to call it Masters for obvious reasons but my wife calls it the midlife crisis category! Both of our results have improved race after race, and the hard work paid off for Jan when he collected a trophy for 3rd place finish in his category at the Marbella Sprint Triathlon. Another reason for signing up for the Sierra Nevada Desafio DX2 was on the back of us joining CD Axarlon sports club based in the Torre Del Mar/Velez area. The team consists of 20+ triathletes ageing from 20 to 60. On our first training session with a few of the team members they mentioned that 11 of the team had already signed up for Desafio DX2 Half Ironman in Granada. So to get into the spirit of things we registered for the race the next day, leaving 6 weeks to train.

Race Day The team stayed the night before in log cabins on a campsite just 2km from the race start. After a restless night sleep, the alarm went off at 6am giving us 1.5 hours to get ready, vacate the cabin and get to Transition 1 so we could drop off the bikes. This is where it started to go wrong. All the team were running late and we arrived at transition 1 with just 10 minutes to spare before it closed at 7.30am. Jan and I were asked for out ID's which in the rush we had left back at the campsite. Jan held a quick vote and decided that I should make the 4k round trip on bike to collect the ID's. On my return we were told we had missed the cut off for leaving the bikes, however after some pleading they decided there was just enough time to drop them off and get to the start line. This gave us 10 minutes to get to the lake for the start; the lake was 1.5k away. We set off on foot running towards the start line, I had my wetsuit over my shoulder, and Jan had left his behind in the transition area by mistake. We took a shortcut wading across a shallow river and got to the start line with a couple of minutes to spare!

2K Swim Start

Views from the run over Pradollano

11k mark: telescope on Pico Veleta (2920 metres)

The Race – Swim Leg (2km swim in the Reservoir at Gßejar Sierra) The swim leg is considered one of the toughest parts of the short distance sprint triathlons; it can be chaotic, with legs kicking frantically, people climbing over each other just to get into some space. However in this race things were a lot calmer, as this section of the race only lasts for 30-40 minutes depending on ability, it is crazy to go too fast. The water was warm, I was wearing a wetsuit, there was lots of space, it was a pleasant start to the race for me and I exited the water in 50th position of 125. Having forgotten his wetsuit, the swim leg was always going to be more difficult for Jan as a good wetsuit can reduce swim times by up to 15%. Jan exited the water 5 minutes later. Once out of the water we had a 2k trail run up to the village of Sierra Guerra to collect our bikes and start the 80k bike section. 80K Bike Section The first 15k was on a very steep hill called El Duque. El Duque is a narrow lane that climbs steeply from Gßejar Sierra up towards the main road that links the city of Granada to the ski resort of

Pradollano. In this section I was feeling in good shape, even overtaking people on the way up. I was confident the training Jan and I had put in over the last 6 months for the triathlon series was paying off. The temperature was already well over 30 degrees, so it was important to take on water and energy drinks at every opportunity. I stopped at the first water stop and collected another two 500ml bottles of water and set off for the 15k very fast downhill section towards Granada. Still feeling good, I was enjoying the moment, I over took another 5-6 triathletes on this section as well as consuming half a pack of jelly babies and some Soreen malt loaf! Although the roads were open to traffic, the police were situated at every junction to stop cars as we made are way down towards Granada and then to the village of Monachil. This is when things started to get tough. The temperature continued to rise as did the road. From Monchil to the Albergue Universitario located above Pradollano the road climbed from 792 metres to 2500metres. That's 450 meters higher than the highest peak of Mount Maroma that overlooks the Axarquia region of Andalucia. On this section, is a

popular stretch of road for cyclists called El Purche. It's long and steep with no shade. The road continued to climb. Every time I looked up I could see the crash barriers of the next section above me. It was soul-destroying and it was getting hotter. A couple of riders were pushing their bikes. Then I was overtaken by a group of 5 riders. Unknown to me I had nearly made it to the top, I decided to stop. As soon as I stopped, I threw up! My neck and back were burning from the heat, I felt terrible. At this point in my head I was blaming Jan for persuading me to sign up for the challenge! Unfair, but true. I walked for about 200 metres when a spectator told me than I was only a few hundred metres from the top of the famous stretch of road. I jumped back on the bike and made it to the next water stop 500 metres away. This was the turning point for me; I had already decided in my head that I would never do it again. 2K later I was sick again and was being overtaken every few minutes. Alex from the team stopped next to me at the side of the road and walked with me for a few hundred metres. This gesture was enough to get me back on the bike push on towards the end of the bike

leg. The last 20K was a steep 7k uphill ride from Pradollano to the Albegue and back down to Pradollano. In this section, as it is a loop, you get to see many of the other triathletes who were all shouting encouragement to each other. Just before I finished the bike leg I spotted Jan, I had stopped blaming him by this point, and seeing him definitely lifted my spirits for the 19k run. 19K Run After slapping on some factor thirty onto my already sun burnt shoulders; I started the run from Pradollano up the ski slopes to the telescope on Pico Veleta. When I say run, I mean run very slowly or walk! Before the race we had decided that it would be easier to break it down into small distances for psychological reasons. Try and think of it in three 5k sections and one 4k section. The reality was I ran 200 metres and walked 100 and so on. Bizarrely I started to overtake people. Admittedly very slowly, but and overtake was and overtake! At the 3k mark Jan went past me on his bike heading in towards the end of his bike section. We both cheered each

To advertise call 637 028 873

other on; again these small gestures genuinely make a difference when you are feeling beat. I caught up with Paco and Alex from CD Axarlon around the 5K mark and we stayed together running a small section then walking a small section until we reached the 11k mark which was at the telescope located on Pico Veleta (2920 metres). On the mountain opposite there was still snow. I had read about the effects of high altitude exercise, but my legs felt so tired I was not sure if it affected me or not. From the 11k mark it was all downhill for the next 8k into the village of Pradallano to the finish. I crossed the line in 8hrs 28 minutes. Jan's run section was more or less the same time as mine and he crossed the finish line an hour later. Post Race At the finish line we were all offered free food, beer, soft drinks and sports massages, and all triathletes sat together and chatted about which sections were the toughest, easiest etc and how we found the race in general. It was at this moment it really all felt worth while taking part in such a tough event. There was definitely camaraderie amongst

the triathletes and a lot of mutual respect. And for me the one single gesture that summed this up was when the last triathlete of the race was a few hundred meters away from the finish line the compere of the event asked everyone to make their way to the finish line to give the guy a round of applause. Everyone obliged. For us, there was one final challenge. That was to get back on our bikes and pedal back to the car which was 20k away at the start line! Thankfully it was all downhill. On the drive back to Competa we chatted about the race and decided we probably wouldn't do it again as once was enough. However the next day I received a text message from Jan talking about another race he had found! As I am finishing writing this article three days have passed and Jan and I have just been out for a 40K bike ride. We discussed what kind of training we should have done and how we could improve our times, it very easy to forget the hard bits and remember the best moments. So, until next year!!! Steve Twiselton

Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. The biggest divide is in the 55 to 64 age group where 52.4 percent of men are working and 36 percent of women are in employment. Meanwhile 139 of Spain’s 350 MPs are women, or 39.7 percent. In the country senate, the figure is 33.5 percent.

Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

THE GRAPEVINE MEETS STEVE TAYLOR, WRITER OF ‘SHADES IN THE SUN’ hen local author Steve Taylor first visited Cómpeta in the Axarquía, he had no idea that his first novel would be set against the backdrop of the village.

W

been coming to our villa, Competa has really earned a place in our hearts. When I had an idea for a book, it was important to me tot part of it in Spain, as a kind of tribute to Competa and the friends we have made here.

The Grapevine caught up with Steve for a chat about his book, ‘Shades in the Sun’.

So, is the book a flattering account of Competa? Absolutely, yes. I have always been treated with kindness here and would like to think that the book might encourage a few more people to visit. Some of the places in ‘Shades in the Sun’ are recognisable Competa sights, such as the Church of La Asuncion and Plaza Almijara. Some of the characters are also based upon real people – with their permission, of course!

What made you decide to set your story in Spain? I first visited Competa some 7 years ago when my wife and I were looking for a house. I fell in love with the village and have never really forgotten the first impressions it made upon me. There is something very special about the Gaudi meeting point and the view over to Competa from there. Over the years that we have

54 The Grapevine

Did you write the book here in Spain?

Yes, quite a lot of it. I spent almost a week here getting the first chapters down on paper. Then I have come back regularly to put together all my ideas and look at details of the places mentioned. I find that the quiet of the mountains outside Competa has been the ideal setting for writing. Where did you get the inspiration for ‘Shades in the Sun’? A couple of years ago, there was a very successful novel in the bestseller charts, featuring a chap called Christian Grey. I think you know the one I mean! I’ve never read the book myself, but as everyone was talking about it, it got me thinking about what it would be like if there was a goodlooking, wealthy person in real life that was actually called Christian Grey.

To advertise call 637 028 873

I wanted to have a bit of fun with the idea. My son is called Christian and my wife’s family name is Bray, and once I got on the track, the ideas just kept rolling! Can you tell us a bit about the plot? Christian Brey works in London as an estate agent and all around him, people areengrossed in a sexy novel called ‘Shades in the Sun’. He isn’t too bothered to start with, but when he is passed over for promotion and even the girls in the office seem obsessed with the book, he starts to get fed up with all the references to his famous namesake. To get away from the fuss, he decides to head off to Spain for a break. Once there, he begins to forget his worries and makes some new friends. But when some diners in a restaurant get wind that he may be the real Christian Braye, Christian begins to wonder if he will ever be free of ‘Shades in the Sun.’

To advertise call 637 028 873

It sounds fun. Is ‘Shades in the Sun’ a romantic novel? There is certainly romance in the book, but it is quite hard to categorise. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to call ‘Shades in the Sun’ ‘chick-lit’ as it was written by a man (!), but I would say it is that kind of genre. I am not pretending that the book will change your life, but it is great fun, with interesting characters and a quirky plot. I’d say it is the perfect beach read. Is the book set entirely in Competa? No! It also features London, Puerto Banus, Amsterdam and a little bit of Barbados! Steve, you are quite brave to self-publish a book. Are you a full-time writer? Actually, I used to own and manage a couple of catering outlets and more recently I have been running my own garden design business. Working outside without too many distractions has really allowed me to develop my

ideas. Mind you, I often woke up at 3.33am and had to scribble down a few paragraphs before I forgot them! Self-publication has been a steep learning curve, but I have been grateful for all the help I’ve received along the way. This is your first book, are you planning on writing more? I do have an idea for another novel. It also has a Spanish theme but a very different kind of story from ‘Shades in the Sun’. Where can readers buy ‘Shades in the Sun’? The book is available as a Kindle download or paperback from Amazon, priced at just £3.56 and £7.95. You can also purchase a paperback copy from Todo Papel and Marco Polo book shop in Cómpeta priced at 9.95 euros.

SPAIN OUTSTRIPS FRANCE AND ITALY IN WINE EXPORTS Spain is the biggest exporter of wine in the world, but why are exports mainly in bulk, rather than bottled?

S

pain is a relative newcomer on the international circuit, compared to the French and Italians, yet it has beaten records to become the biggest wine exporter in the world.

to make space in the wineries for the new grape harvest," Nairy Chaglasyan, Area Manager for J García Carrión, which exports wine to 155 countries worldwide and is the biggest wine producer in Europe and fourth in the world, told The Local.

According to data published on February 23rd by Spanish wine market observatory (Obervatorio Español de los Mercados del Vino – OEM) Spanish wine exports reached 22.8 million hectoliters in 2014, a 22.3 percent rise on 2013.

"Most of the cooperatives sell their wine in bulk - it’s much quicker than having to bottle it - and although there isn’t much profit at least the costs are covered."

But while the volume of sales has increased, profits have fallen 2.2 percent since 2013. According to the latest data, France is now the biggest buyer of Spanish wines; guzzling 5.8 million hectoliters in 2014, a 40 percent rise on the previous year, followed by Germany, Portugal and Russia. But if Spain is the biggest exporter of wine in the world, why have profits fallen? The answer may lie in the fact that the majority of wine exported from Spain, 55 percent, is sold in bulk, i.e. not bottled. "Wine must be exported each year

66 The Grapevine

Spain, home to the biggest vineyards in the world, has always sold in bulk to its neighbours but profits are falling - the latest figures reveal that in 2014 the average price was 40 cents per litre, compared to 60 cents the year before. It is often more economic for France to export wine in bulk from Spain and then label it, rather than growing the grapes and making the wine themselves. "France has been buying wine in bulk from Spain for years to bottle and sell as its own, (with an EU denomination) or not clearly identifying the origin," said works

Chaglasyan, who points out that the company she works only sells bottled wine with declared Spanish origin. “The French import Spanish bulk for their 'vin de table', for blends and also for re-export - there have been lots of scandals involving French producers mislabeling 'their' wine destined for export to the US." Another important factor in why Spanish wines are so cheap compared to their competitors, according to Chaglasyan, is that Spain opened up to the international market relatively late. "Both France and Italy have a much better international presence, they have more experience in marketing their products and have been exporting for much longer than Spanish producers." According to Chaglasyan, if Spain wants to keep its crown as the world’s biggest exporter along with increasing profits, the country has to work on selling itself and its wine, focusing less on the distinct regions of the country and pushing Spanish wine as a whole. CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Dancing in the Moonlight.

As light levels fall, our other senses become sharper and thus we are drawn – like moths and other night-time pollinators – by soft scents and piercing perfumes alike. Summer evenings here are made for enjoyment; it's a comfortable time to be outside, lingering over dinner under the stars; ideal to sit and relax letting all the stresses and worries of the day fade away. So create a bit of bewitchment in your night-time garden, here´s how.

glow luminously and seem larger by night; add a dash of silver foliage plants for a hauntingly platinised look; then some evocative after-dark aromas to hover on the soft night air. Plain green hedging provides a perfect backdrop for the pale colours to glow and helps to trap the smells inside the garden too. The loud brash colours of daytime fade into the shadows leaving their paler counterparts to glow and shine. White, faded blues and the palest pastels are the best. And remember that it's not just flowers that glow – silvery bark and foliage can do the same and striped or variegated plants take on a more exotic light and shade look than in their daytime garb.

Designing a night-time garden is easier than it may seem. Plan special areas – perhaps framing the patio where you prefer to sit, or around a dining area or, simply, a small area that always catches the best of the moonlight. Use lots of white and pale flowers which

For scent there are several really good options. The first to spring to mind are citrus flowers, jasmine and dama de noche (cestrum nocturnum). I'd add one more plant to this 'must have' list – the aptly and alluringly named moonflower or ipomoea alba. This

climber opens huge white glowing dishes of flowers during the night hours, a real winner and softly scented too. These four will give you enough allure and aroma for many an evening, but if you fancy something a little different, here are a few more suggestions. Nicotiana affinis, tobacco plant. Closely related to the tobacco plant that we smoke but with a much nicer smell! Pollinated at night, it exudes a strong perfume as an attractant and shines under the moonlight too. Use it to line pathways or fill your pots. Brugmansia suaveolens, angels' trumpets. Often mistakenly known as datura, the scent of this plant and its looks are utterly intoxicating! But it has a dark side! It has long been used as a hallucinogenic, so you may want to position it a distance from your seating area – unless you like to be, literally, overpowered by its scent! The white variety, with soft velvety leaves, has the strongest perfume.

Brunfelsia pauciflora, yesterday, today and tomorrow plant. This shrub or small tree charmingly bears purple, lavender and white flowers at the same time and a soft haunting perfume. Hedychium, ginger lily. Their strapping dramatic foliage is great in pots around patios and the heady fragrance of their flowers is magical at night. Lilium regale 'Album' and lilium candidum. Lilies are always special but both of these have a particularly wonderful perfume and are stunning beauties too. Mirabilis jalapa, Don Pedro or 4 o'clock plant. A survivor, often found growing in rough rubble, its delicate-looking beauty always surprises. In lovely shades of yellow, pink and coral, often striped and blotched, it opens during the evening and wafts its scent around. Spreads rapidly via tubers and seeds. Oenothera biennis, evening primrose. Another late-evening flowerer and tough contender, it rapidly forms massive mounds smothered in sweet scented yellow trumpets. A prolific but charming self-seeder. Wisteria floribunda, Japanese wisteria has elegantly cascading tassels of flowers – try it over a pergola. Beautiful by day and bewitching by night in white, pale pink or lilac and softly scented. For height, try tall wigwams of lonicera or honeysuckle and trachelospermum jasminoides, the star jasmine for towering and spectacular pillars which will wrap you in their spicy aromas. As you can see, these scented night-time beauties are all pale coloured and there are some others that, although not scented, add their own enchantment with their silvery good looks. Artemisia stelleriana, beach wormwood or dusty miller has

heavily silvered creeping ferny foliage perfect for softening path edges. It loves hot and sunny but adds a special glow to moonlit evenings too. Convolvulus cneorum, silverbush is a low shrublet again lovely in hot sunny spots and with a platinised sheen by night. It´s flowers will close up at night but the foliage is so good you won´t miss them. Santolina chamaecyparissus known as the curry plant. Tightly knit silver foliage with yellow flowers which many people cut off to enjoy the foliage alone. Good for rather formal path edgings. Trim regularly to stop it falling apart. Stachys lanata, lamb`s lugs with its must-stroke foliage. Grow it hot and dry for the best silvered look.

Cestrum Nocturnum

For real drama, try those steelycoloured agaves, the white feltleafed kalanchoe beharensis, feathery silvered ferns in shady spots and soft grasses. And don´t forget trees: towering silvery-leafed eucalyptus with their striped peeling bark can certainly add an eerie look and the white/black look of silver leafed poplar trees and the white ghost trunks of silver birches is particularly noticeable at night.
