Editors Note... Last month my family and I were taken to the waterfalls near Otivar (Junta de los Rios) by local business Competa Hikes . The front cover picture was taken on the day out and shows part of the area we visited. It was a fabulous day out in a beautiful area with rock pools, waterfalls and idyllic scenery. Sarah and David from Competa Hikes were fabulous hosts showing us the way and directing us through, over and under rocks and steams! The kids jumped from rocks ledges into pools, snorkeled and paddled in the streams. The adults found a shady area to make a base and couple of beers and a picnic rounded off the day nicely. I would definitely recommend the excursion, see advert on page 22 and call and ask about this day out. Front Cover: Junta de los Rios, Otivar

Hope you are all enjoying the summer and the ferias in the area. As I am writing this we are about to miss most of this years feria in our area due to Steve partaking in the Sierra Nevada Half Triathlon which he did last year. Something which he swore he would never do again! We will stay in Granada for a night and then support him the following day whilst seeing Sirerra Nevada without snow and maybe even take a trip on a ski lift. There is no doubt it will be hot up there but it will be interesting to see it in the summer without snow.

NEWS IN SPAIN This months update

I

n Pamplona last month, nine people suffered bruises and cuts but no one was gored in the final running of the bulls at Pamplona's San Fermin festival, Spanish officials said. The run produced moments of high tension when several bulls crashed into a pile of fallen runners on entering the bull ring but there were no gorings. More than a thousand people took part in the 8 a.m. (0600 GMT, 2 a.m. EDT) run, which lasted just under 2½ minutes. The Navarra regional government said nine participants were admitted to a city hospital for contusions and cuts but none was in serious condition. The nine-day fiesta, known also for its 24-hour street partying, became world famous with Ernest Hemingway's 1926 novel "The Sun Also Rises" and attracts thousands of foreign tourists. In the runs, hundreds of daredevils dash with six fighting bulls and their accompanying steer along a 930-yard (850meter) street course to the city's bull ring. The bulls then face matadors and almost certain death in afternoon bullfights .Bull runs are a traditional part of summer festivals across Spain. Twelve people, including four Americans, were gored in the eight runs at this year's festival. Six were later released from the city hospital and the rest were said to be progressing well. In all, 15 people have died from gorings at the festival since recordkeeping began in 1924.

egways have lots of advantages: they’re environmentally friendly, silent and sort of fun ... maybe. What’s more, despite being a common joke in film and TV shows, they have found a solid economic niche: city tours. But they can also be tremendously annoying for pedestrians. Barcelona, for now at least, has had enough. After summer upon summer of what the mayor’s office calls “complaints and problems” from residents of Ciutat Vella – the central neighbourhood and the one most affected by mass tourism – the city council has provisionally banned Segways from the waterfront for the summer months .In other cities, however, Segways have taken over: an online directory lists 622 guided tours in 56 countries and 427 cities, with the US at the top with 324 tours, followed by Spain with 44. Their coexistence with pedestrians remains problematic, as does deciding whether they belong in car, pedestrian or cycle lanes. Barcelona has a population density that is high enough by itself (15,685 people per sq km, compared to London’s 5,491 or Copenhagen’s 1,850) without taking into account the 27 million tourists who visit every year. The Segway issue is only the tip of the iceberg.

R

eal Madrid, FC Barcelona and five other Spanish football clubs must repay

tens of millions of euros in illegal state subsidies, after the EU executive found they had received unfair financial aid from their government. Real Madrid, the world’s top-earning football club, will have to repay €18.4m (£15.4m), after the European commission judged that an overpriced land deal with local authorities in the Spanish capital was unfairly tilted in the club’s favour. Separately, an investigation into five Dutch clubs, including PSV Eindhoven, was closed after the commission said no EU rules had been broken. The European commission, which is the enforcer of EU law, said football was an economic activity and that it had a duty to ensure a level playing field between sports companies. “Using taxpayers’ money to finance professional football clubs can create unfair competition,” the EU competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said in a statement. “Professional football is a commercial activity with significant money involved and public money must comply with fair competition rules. The subsidies we investigated in these cases did not.”

A

n experimental solarpowered air plane has left Spain for Egypt in the penultimate leg of its globecircling voyage. Organizers said the Solar Impulse 2 flew out of Seville airport Monday and was heading for Cairo. The flight, piloted by Swiss man Andre Borschberg, is expected to last 50 hours and 30 minutes. The around-the-world voyage began in March 2015 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates and is due to finish there too. The plane arrived in Seville on June 23 after an unprecedented three-day flight across the Atlantic. The wings of Solar Impulse 2, which stretch wider than those of a Boeing 747, are equipped with 17,000 solar cells that power propellers and charge batteries. The plane runs on stored energy at night.

ACTION FOR ANIMALS Good News!

M

any of you may have recently seen the little ginger kitten, just a couple of months old, who had been abandoned and was living in a bush by the Tetería in Cómpeta. She was lucky to be close to a restaurant run by animal lovers, Jodie and Rafa, who alerted me to the fact that she was there so between us we made sure she had food and fresh water every day. She was very timid, but gradually became bolder and would often appear later in the evening, while customers were dining, in the hope that she might be given a few more tasty morsels for her supper. By the time she'd been there for a week or two, I was able to stroke her and it became clear that if we could find an owner for her while she was still young, she'd make a lovely pet. We were anxious to get her homed before she came to any harm on the streets of Cómpeta, so Jodie and Rafa decided to see if any of their customers could offer her a home. Katherine Paterson came to the rescue and arrived at the Tetería, cat carrier in hand, ready to take her home. I'd managed to gain the kitten's

14 The Grapevine

confidence and she'd learnt to trust me, so I felt awful coaxing her out of her secret hideaway only to bundle her into a box to be taken away. But her discomfort was short-lived and “Picara” is now safe and sound and thriving in Katherine's home where she can live happily ever after. Thanks to Jodie, Rafa and Katherine, for saving her little life! Earlier in the month, a pair of tabby kittens, rescued from a busy road in Cómpeta by two young men, were brought into our shop. The rescuers had found homes for them, but the new owners couldn't take them for a week and they were unable to keep them until they went to their new homes. The kittens were quite straggly looking and their little bellies were very swollen. One of our volunteers, Sandiey (Queen of Cat Nurturing) agreed to care for them until their new owners were ready to take them home. She took them to the vet who diagnosed a nasty case of worms, hence the distended abdomens, and they were treated immediately. Sandiey worked her magic and within just a week she'd transformed them into a pair of healthy little kitties. They were collected from the shop by Jonas, one of their rescuers and taken to their new owners. Another happy

ending! And finally, you may have seen Max, a sweet-natured, beige coloured dog wandering around Cómpeta. A visit with him to the vet showed no microchip, so Julia Ruane, another of our wonderful volunteers, agreed to foster him until we could find him a home. Inez Leniere Lopez put us in touch with Elsie Matthijssens, an animal-loving Belgian woman, who wasted no time in finding him a new home in Belgium. Isn't team work amazing? Please support our work by shopping with us and donating to us. Thank you! Action for Animals Charity Shop, Avenida de la Constitución 59, Cómpeta. n Interview with Luis Ruiz Ortega who has had a construction business in Competa for over 30 years and has now opened an Estate Agents at the bottom of the Village of Competa opposite Tejauto garage.

Have you lived in Competa all your life? I was born in Cómpeta, but moved to Majorca when I was 5 and at 8 years old came back to my birthplace Cómpeta. ¿Qué te gusta de Cómpeta? Me encanta la gente, la tranquilidad, el turismo que ofrece este precioso pueblo, y seguro que no soy el único en decir que Cómpeta y su gente son maravillosos. What do you love about Competa? I love the people, the tranquillity, the tourism this great village has to offer, and I am sure I am not the first in saying that Cómpeta and its people are marvellous.

How long have you had your own business In Competa and what changes have there been in Competa since you first opened? I have had my own business around 30 years. There have been lots of changes in the past few years, but personally the one that stands out, is the demand for new builds, for example, we could be building at least one a month but

Property Registry Office), to certify ownership. The Rental Contract. A copy of the Burofax.

HOW TO DEAL WITH RENTAL ARREARS Axarquia Solicitors

R

entals are sensitive to the general economic situation, and in times of abundance cases of unpaid rent are rare. However, in times of crisis many tenants start to have problems and late or nonpayment occurs more frequently. Currently, it's not unusual that landlords can find themselves faced with these problems. Based on our extensive experience in such cases, we at Axarquía Solicitors would advise a landlord to firstly to speak to the tenant directly in order to find out if it's simply a late payment or if it's a more serious continuing problem that could be repeated or even get worse. It is important to determine the reason for the late or non-payment so that the appropriate action can be taken. The following situations are likely: Isolated cases of default In payment which is due to a temporary lack of liquidity. Repeated cases of nonpayment When the default is frequently repeated, or two months rental payments are overdue and it seems unlikely that the tenant will be able to catch up with the accumulating debt or it looks like the situation will get worse. Once this situation arises, we advise that the landlord should consult a Lawyer to expedite both the collection of the overdue rent and if necessary to evict the tenants. The Landlord can then formally claim any overdue rental

24 The Grapevine

payments and terminate the lease so that the debtors are obliged to vacate the property. Formally Claim Overdue Rental Payments We can save you unnecessary expenses during this process, firstly, by issuing an Eviction Order which would mean that the tenant could not settle any debts before the court case. This is beneficial, as it is a great time saver, because without the Eviction Order the landlord would have to accept mandatory payment and the tenant would be able to remain in the property. The landlord would then risk the possibility that the tenant could not catch up with the rental payments again and the whole process would have to be repeated, which would involve more time and legal costs. Secondly, when a Formal Claim is made to the courts, the tenant would be liable to pay the court costs even if the tenant admits the claim is justified. Terminate the Lease To achieve this, the landlord should send a Burofax to the tenant demanding payment of the overdue rent within 30 days of its receipt, with a warning informing the tenant that legal proceedings will be initiated if full payment is not received within the stated period. If after the 30 day period no payment has been made the landlord can apply for an Eviction Order by providing the courts with the following documents:-

Once the court accepts the above documents they will notify the tenant, who would then have 10 days in which to reply. From the moment of the notification the tenant cannot pay the debt and can only do one of the following things: Ignore the notification In which case the court proceedings would continue in their absence. Accept the eviction in exchange for a reduction or the cancellation of the debt. Appeal. When the Landlord has won the case and the judge declares that the landlord has the right to receive payment of the unpaid rent and the cancelation of the contract, eviction is not automatic. In the case where a tenant refuses to vacate the property, the Landlord would have to place a second suit with the courts to order the abandonment of the property due to non- payment of rent. Once this has been approved by the court they will set a date and time for the eviction. A court appointed counsel together with a court official will witness the eviction, with a locksmith and the police if necessary. ONLY ONCE THIS HAS BEEN DONE CAN THE LANDLORD RECUPERATE THE POSSESSION OF THE PROPERTY. José Manuel Garzón Macho We at Axarquía Solicitors recommend that you arrange an appointment with one of our experts on procedural civil law in order to obtain personalized legal advice for your particular case. www.axarquiasolicitors.com

THE SPANISH HEALTH SYSTEM AND CANCER CARE Medical Problems

W

hen someone has a medical problem and goes to see their GP at their local Health Centre and the GP suspects there may be a more important problem that they can't deal with, they will refer the patient to a specialist in either the Vélez Málaga Hospital Comarcal or directly to the Regional University Hospital (Carlos Haya) in Málaga (depending on the type of service required). Investigations can be done: at the Health Centre normally blood tests; at the Vélez Málaga Comarcal Hospital normal x-rays but for more complicated radiological examinations then you will be sent to the hospitals in Málaga or in contracted private facilities also in Málaga. SPANISH SOCIAL SECURITY (SS) CANCER SERVICE The SS cancer services are part of the oncology service of the Regional University Hospital (Formally known as Carlos Haya), and the Materno-Infantil Hospital in Málaga (for children and gynecological problems). There is also a twice weekly morning clinic at the district

hospital (Hospital Comarcal) in Vélez Málaga. It is widely accepted that should you need to change an appointment at the MaternoInfantil Hospital in Malaga then you should do so in person as the phone is permanently off the hook however this may now have changed. Parking can be difficult at the Materno-Infantil and the large carpark is often full by 09:30am. There is additional parking close to the Fire Station but be mindful that it is a 10 minute walk away. Some chemotherapies are administered at the Vélez Hospital, others at the Málaga hospitals. Radiotherapy treatments are given in the Regional Hospital, Malaga or in contracted private facilities in Zanit Hospital, Limonar. This centre has different types of radiotherapy. (It is very close to the motorway in Málaga). You will have an appointment with a Specialist/Surgeon either at Comarcal Hospital, Velez Malaga or be sent directly to the

Regional University Hospital, Malaga dependant on the services required. This is where the decision is made regarding your treatment path. Should you be diagnosed with Cancer you will no doubt have many questions. You should be given a book prior to your first treatment but if not, a separate sheet entitled Questions for your Doctor/Oncologist 2015 may provide a useful guide including diagnosis, symptoms and treatment. A copy can be obtained by emailing a request to debi.bond@gmail.com Tell your Oncologist if there is a history of Breast or Ovarian Cancer in your family. You will be sent for Genetic Appraisal and Testing. NOTE: Where applicable, if you are embarking on long-term chemo treatment then you may be offered a port, a semipermanent intravenous access point generally to the left or right upper chest area. Day Care Centre based in Comarcal Hospital, it takes a few minutes. TREATMENT DAY Make sure you have understood which hospital you are going to especially in Malaga. Listen out carefully for your name which may not be pronounced as you would expect or indeed have your names in the right order. In this example, you are generally required to arrive at the Regional University Hospital (Formally known as Carlos Haya) Malaga at 9am for a blood test and you may have to wait 2 or 3 hours before the results are back (time for breakfast). The Oncologist will then make a decision as to whether the treatment will go ahead. It is advisable to take a family member or friend with you as 'waiting' is a key factor as well as a good deal of patience. If your platelet levels are at the correct level then treatment will be approved and you will be sent to wait for your name to be called out. (If the levels are not correct because for example the chemotherapy treatment suppresses your immune system then you will be sent home and asked to return the following week.) The administration of your chemo treatment may take a number of hours. Don't forget to mention to your Oncologist if you have a bad reaction to treatment, they may be able to adjust the dosage. Also write your questions down so as not to forget anything. A NOTE ON RADIOTHERAPY Radiotherapy can be used in combination with chemotherapy or as a specific treatment, depending on the type and extent of the cancer. The patient is first given an initial appointment at the radiotherapy unit where a simulation session will take place. At this session the patient

is placed in the exact position needed in the radiotherapy room and the skin marked (normally by tattoo). These marks are then used to ensure that the patient is in the correct position at each appointment. Radiotherapy is normally given Monday to Friday over a period of time. (e.g. 30 sessions will take 6 weeks to complete) The sessions only take a few seconds as the dose is fractionalised to reduce side effects. Many times the biggest problem with radiotherapy is travel time getting to and back from the centre. Side effects depend on the area to be irradiated but the most common side effect is tiredness. Time to send your partner off to book your next appointments If you are having prolonged daily treatment consider staying in a local hotel removing the stress of the journey at each end of the day After your first treatment session, you may be offered an array of anti-sickness/diarrhoea drugs to take as necessary. TOP TIP IF YOU ARE NOT A FLUENT SPANISH SPEAKER There is a Translator Service at the Regional University Hospital (Carlos Haya) no longer funded by the Junta de AndalucĂa. A translator may be booked in advance by calling Jose on 666 284 996 and he and his team will walk you through all the procedures and attend your appointment. This will cost 30â‚Ź per session but well worthwhile even if you have to book more than once, as fully understanding your treatment plan and all that is associated with it is essential. Translators at Comical Hospital Velez Malaga are all volunteers and cannot be booked in advance. If required, arrive well before your appointment time and register with the translator desk just behind the main reception.

A NOTE ON PRIVATE HEALTHCARE This provides you with a greater selection of surgeons and minimises waiting times. A cautionary note; check that all the treatment proposed is covered under your policy and ensure you keep all of your paperwork together as potentially, you will be attending a number of different facilities that are not necessarily connected. The cost of any pharmaceuticals or indeed any other prescribed materials will not be covered under your policy unless otherwise stipulated and will be at your own cost; this can potentially be very expensive. Ensure you provide your GP (whether private or at the local Consultorio) with all your results. For anyone who has been offered or is about to embark on Stem Cell Replacement Therapy, I have an excellent piece written by the wife of a patient who has just finished his treatment which is too long to include, but too good to be shortened. Their Ariyanas range includes red, white and rosé, sweet and dry, and has had national and international success, winning plaudits and prizes in the competitive world market. We reported last year how, with the completion of their beautiful light and airy modern building they were expanding their “enotourism” offer to include winecentred lunches, alongside the winery tours and wine tastings. The reaction has been so positive that TripAdvisor has awarded them a “Certificate of Excellence” for 54 five-star

reviews from Spanish, British, Dutch, Belgian, Swedish, Irish, Danish and Norwegian visitors! This is mainly due to the quality of the food and wine itself but the beautiful location is also part of the attraction: visitors and residents alike respond to the spectacular views. With this in mind, Clara and André, the bodega's owners who never rest on their laurels, are beginning to allow fuller use of their stunning location, opening for special events. They are now offering private tailor-made visits for parties, special celebrations and business groups and corporate incentives. Their July launch event brought musician Daniel Casares to the Bodega for a private concert of

Clara and André first got to know Daniel when he suggested that they collaborate, combining his music and their wine. This led to the creation of the Picassares Pack, a wonderful gift box containing Daniel's new CD, Picassares, a bottle of the Ariyanas Naturalmente Dulce wine, and tasting notes for both by sommelier Enrique López. After the pack was launched Daniel invited Clara and André to his concert in Estepona, where they were part of the 1000+ audience. They returned the favour by hosting a wonderful private (invitation only) concert, in the bodega's grounds, in July. Listening to the passionate expression of Spanish guitar, enjoyed in the stunning setting of the bodega, between the mountains and the Mediterranean sea, with a glass of Ariyanas in your hand – no wonder the performance was a tremendous success. Don't worry if you missed out, though: this is, after all, the start and not the end of the story. In the meantime you can enjoy the bodegas superb eno-tourism offer and their marvellous wines, along with Daniel's Picassares album, playing in the background. See advert opposite.

รณmpeta is best known to many for it's locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, as well as being plentiful and cheap.

One of the most popular annual fiesta's in Cรณmpeta is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine). On the 15th of August it features a program of flamenco and sevillana music and dance plus plenty of free flowing wine! The event pays homage to the town's patron saint Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, and is traditionally a day to make merry before the harvest begins. But since 1974 and thanks to a local man, Aurelio Fernandez Navas, who started the practice of dispensing free samples of the local wine to revelers, it has become one of the Axarquia's most important yearly events. In the fiesta, which is declared to be of National Tourist Interest in Andalucia, traditional activities such as the foot treading of the locally collected grapes is carried out in the wine press in the Plaza de la Vendimia. It is an ideal day out and to discover how wine is made and to enjoy the local food. Over 300 litres of oil will be on hand to prepare migas, the traditional dish made out of fried breadcrumbs with which to soak up the alcohol. Cรณmpeta sees more than 1,500 litres of wine shared out to the 3,500 visitors who enjoy the day each year and relive one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Cรณmpeta.

HOW TO BECOME AN EFFECTIVE WINE TASTER Are you a wine expert?

M

illions of people all over the world are drinking wine but only few know how to recognize or distinguish its characteristics. Today, wine tasting parties are organized to bring together all wine lovers and test their expertise. It takes a lot of experience and exposure before a person can be called a wine expert. However, becoming one is surprisingly easy. Here are some tips on how to become an effective wine taster: 1.Preparing the tongue. Obviously, the tongue plays a major role in wine tasting. It contains taste buds that are responsible in detecting if food or drinks being eaten are bitter, salty, sour, or sweet. To make them work as intended, swish wine around the mouth, this will signal the tongue to get ready in identifying the wine.

62 The Grapevine

2.Preparing the sense of smell.

4.Evaluating the wine.

75% of taste is actually dictated by the sense of smell. Aside from the tongue, the nose will also play an important role in tasting a wine. Wine experts know that it isn’t a good idea when tasting a wine while having a running nose or colds because it will affect their sense of taste. In smelling the wine, it is necessary to swirl it first. This will release molecules that produce aroma.

After following the first 3 steps, it is time to evaluate the wine. In order to do so, these questions must be answered: Is wine rich or light? Is it too harsh or too smooth? Does it have pleasant aftertaste? Is it too dry? The answers will lead the wine taster to decide if the taste is appropriate for a specific brand or type of wine.

3.Examining the wine’s appearance. To determine color of the wine, pour it in a clear glass and use white paper or tablecloth for background. This procedure will give you an idea about the age of the wine. For example, when white wine appears whiter it means it contains more flavors and it may be vintage. On the other hand, red wines appear lighter as they age.

To become an expert wine tester, you need to taste several wines. It would help to keep notes on the impression and labels of each wine. This would make the identification process easier and more accurate. Learning this skill requires a lot of time and experience. Do not be in a hurry to learn Io take time to enjoy while doing so. to consider when choosing wine glasses. Glasses with a wide bowl that tapers toward the mouth will allow the aroma of the wine to be released generously. This is because the deeper bowls allow more room for swirling and the narrow opening channels the aroma to your nostrils efficiently. A big flared opening will disperse the aroma rather quicker. Red wines are traditionally served in bigger glasses than white wine, this is because red wines needs more space to breathe and develop, remember, a wine glass can never be too big. Sparkling wines should be served in think glasses with straight side or flutes so that the fizz is preserved.

GUIDE TO BUYING WINE GLASSES What glass for which wine?

Y

ou’ve heard somewhere or read somewhere that wine must be served in the best crystal to get its full advantage, well not necessarily but there are a few basic principles to remember when choosing glasses that will help you get the best from your favourite bottle. It is true however that the appearance, smell and even the taste can be enhanced by using the proper glasses. The oldest surviving wine glass with a stem and foot are 15th century enameled goblets that holds more than four ounces of liquid. Towards the end of the 16th century in Germany, wine glasses are sophistically engraved as decoration . Meanwhile The earliest surviving English wine glasses that were produced near the end of the 16th century were made by Verzelini, there were diamondengraved. Around the 1740s plain straight stems and air twist

64 The Grapevine

stems gained popularity . France introduced fine crystal glasses towards the end of the 18th century. Wine glasses during the 19th century were often produced in sets of a dozen each, each set for port and sherry, burgundy and claret, champagne glasses and liqueur glasses. In the 1950s, Riedel Crystal and other manufacturers have refined the design of wine glasses with unique size and shape for almost every wine variation. When choosing glasses, always remember to first choose a plain glass to set off your best wines, stay away from coloured or even those that have tinted stems or bases. The effect of light on the wine, specifically the “legs” and “tears’ on the inner wall when you swirl the wine and the way aromas are captured within the wine glass and finally presented to your nose while drinking are one of the most important things

Realising the plight of budget restricted consumers, the California Wine Institute has developed an all-purpose wine glass. It is five and one half inches tall with a one and three quarter inch stem. Its clear, tulipshaped bowl holds a capacity of up to eight ounces. Setting of wine glasses at a dinner party should also be taken into consideration when serving different types of wine throughout each course. The glasses should be arranged in the order they are to be used and right to left. Typically wine is poured from the right, while food is served from the left. You might want to begin with tall stemmed glass for whites followed by a large wine goblet for reds and ending with short smaller glass for port or sherry. Finally remember that you need to leave room to capture the aroma as it rises from the swirled wine and allowing room for it to be tilted to evaluate the colour of the wine therefore it’s best to fill the wine glass at one third to one half full at the most. Cancer survival rates mirror this trend with the five-year survival after diagnosis for all major types of tumour on the rise, according to a study published in The Lancet. Particularly strong improvements were seen for prostate cancer where the survival rate rose 73.7 percent from 1995 to 1999 tp 87.1 percent for 2005 to 2009. For breast cancer, the survival rate rose from 77.8 percent to 83.7 percent in the periods in question. Equal opportunity A total of 54.1 percent of women in Spain aged over 20 to 64 are working, compared to 64.5 percent of men, 2012 figures from Spain’s national statistics institute show. Falling fertility rates Spain’s fertility rate in 2012 was 1.32, a long way down from 2.20 notched up in 1980 but up from the 2000 figure of 1.23. Spain's first-time mums are also Europe's oldest with women putting off having their first baby until they are 32. While this trend towards having fewer babies is in line with European trends, there have been concerns raised about Spain's ageing population with representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund warning Spain’s ageing population could cause serious social and economic problems that could damage the pensions and healthcare systems. Youth hardest hit by unemployment At 23.7 percent Spain's unemployment is one of the highest in Europe and consistently rates as one of Spanish citizens' chief preoccupations in the monthly polls carried out by the government research body CIS. While the figure has dropped from the 25.65 percent of mid-2014 it remains a serious problem, and for people under 25, the jobless rate is 52 percent. On top of that, there are 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. Falling wages The economic crisis has hit Spanish workers harder than their counterparts in most other countries. Average salaries have fallen by an average of 2 per cent a year since 2007, more than anywhere else in Europe except Greece.

Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called 'mileuristas', earning €1,000 a month or less. Rainbow marriages The expense of weddings and changing attitudes to traditional marriage have had an impact on post-crisis Spain. In 2000, the average rate of marriages per year per 1000 inhabitants was 5.4 but that fell to around 3.6 by 2010. The 2013 rate was just 3.3. There were 155,098 couples married in 2013, down 8 per cent on the previous year. Same-sex marriages accounted for 3,102 of those, a slight fall from 2012's 3,834 figure. A total of 30,453 gay and lesbian couples have been married in Spain since it was made legal in 2005. Life on the streets Figures on homelessness are notoriously difficult to obtain but Spain's national statistics institute reports that 22,938 people used the country's homeless hostels and shelters in 2012, the latest year for which numbers are available. Major Spanish charity Caritas, meanwhile, estimates there are over 30,000 people living on the streets in Spain, and highlights that there were 35.908 home evictions in the country from January to July 2013. Some 83 percent of the people evicted did not have another home, Caritas said. Source George Mills, local es

The mean average monthly salary in Spain in 2013 was just €1,324 while 34 per cent of the country's 16,682,861 employees earned the minimum wage of €645. Tax office figures show that almost half of Spain's total workforce, some 7.7 million people, are so-called

CAMPO CUTTINGS BY LORRAINE CAVANAGH Oh, I do Like to be Beside the Seaside, I do Like to be Beside the Sea ….!

A

ugust, for me, conjures up sand and sea; it's the month of holidays for many and what better place to spend it than on the beach. Seaside runs the whole gamut from rather quaint, picturesque, Victorian-style with donkeys on the beach (a childhood thing, as I don´t suppose that is allowed anymore!); the colourful beaches of Southern France with striped windbreaks and tumbles of painted houses; exotic and tropical sands framed by green palm fronds; to tiny bays at the feet of gaunt rocky outcrops. My personal idea of sandy perfection is Spain´s Atlantic coast with its kilometres of fine white sand; I like its rather wild, woolly and untamed look. There's so much of it that, even in full holiday season, you can always still find your own private corner. There´s nearly

84 The Grapevine

always a breeze to cool and give you that wind-swept look; sometimes it sandblasts you too! There are rock pools to fascinate with their sea life for hours and, of course, those magnificent rolling waves. So the flip flops are already packed and we go to unwind, flop and do nothing. Recharge batteries and think of whimsy and wonders; the mind wandering hither and thither as it never has time to do during the rest of the year! We (almost) leave internet and wifi behind, never look at the tele and pack a pile of fascinating books. But, there is one thing I cannot ever quite leave behind and that is my burning passion – some might call it nosiness – for other gardens and plants! Walking along sandy tracks, I cannot resist peering over fences, peeking through gated courtyards to see

what is growing in those seaside gardens! All gardens have some sort of challenge, but seaside ones are, probably, some of the most difficult. They may be less prone to low temperatures but they are usually in very exposed positions and suffer hugely from wind-burn and salty spray. Many are also only occupied during the summer months and must look after themselves during the rest of the year. They´ve got to be really tough and totally tolerant. So – what do these seaside gardeners grow? Firstly, most good ones will have an all-important windbreak. Trees that are honed into wondrous shapes by the wind. Try the pines; pinus nigra, pinus pinea or stone pine and pinus pinaster or maritime pine. You see them all

along this coastline and for good reason! For something more colourful go for the wonderful tamarisk with its springtime froth of pink flowers and fine leaves – it, too, twists and turns to the tune of the wind. And Jupiter's Beard, lagerstroemia indica or crepe myrtle tree with its delicatelooking crepe paper flowers in pinks, lilacs and white or hibiscus syriacus, in the same colour ranges, with double or single flowers. Both are tougher than they look or sound, rarely breaking branches no matter how strongly it's blowing. The toughest palm of all is chamaerops humilis, the dwarf Mediterranean palm – which is also, incidentally, immune to the palm beetle – and is seen all along this coastline. Inside the tree line the tough shrubs take over and these are some of the best! Eleagnus x ebbingei or silverberry with frosted white leaves; try intermingling with dodonea viscosa purpurea, the purple-leaved hopbush for a very striking combination. Silver-grey leaves lead the way in toughness and drought resistance, so try teucrium fruticans, acca sellowiana or pineapple guava, metrosideros excelsa or New Zealand Christmas tree (for its festive red flowers) and various cistus with their tissue-paper soft flowers. There are several prickly plantings that are often seen too; prunus spinosa or blackthorn – which give us sloes for adding to gin – the berry-bearing pyracanthas and mahonias and the really spiny shrub rose, rosa rugosa and r. rubrifolia glauca with its coppery-mauve foliage. The tumbling branches of mock orange, philadelphus coronarius, sway and swing in the wind wafting that delicious orange blossom perfume and I like too the swaying heavy flower heads of cestrum elegans, in deep rosy pink. Some photinias come with lovely marbled leaves of greygreen, cream and pink or there is photinia Red Robin with bright red young shoots. Dense greenness

To advertise call 637 028 873

can be achieved with viburnums, v. tinus or v. lucidum and both bear heavily scented creamywhite flowers and the Californian lilacs, ceanothus, have deep green small leaves which are a great contrast to the sky-blue

flowers. They come in many sizes from sprawling ground-cover to large shrubs. Another very useful family are the Australian grevilleas; all are tough and tolerant and, again, there's a huge range of sizes. Try g. rosmarinifolia, g. rosea, g. olivacea (looking like a wild olive) and the lowest of all, g. lanigera Mt. Tamboritha. These are collectively known as spider flowers because of their unusual

and attractive flower shape. Lower plantings often come in two distinct shapes; those with swordshaped leaves so that the wind can easily filter through them. Things like agapanthus, kniphofia, tulbaghia, phormium, allium, anigozanthos, allium and crocosmia are all examples of this type, along with a great many grasses. Rounded balls of plants tuck in to avoid the worst weather; things like lavender, perovskia, convolvulus cneorum, senecio viravira and artemisias such as a. stelleriana and a. Powis Castle. Small or fine-leaved plants also suffer less. Hence plantings like helianthemum, cerastogima wilmotianum, hebe, dianthus, spartium junceum, erigeron karvanskianus and achillea do the job well. Salvias are stalwarts of maritime gardens too. Look out for any plants that bear the name maritinum in their name – it´s a sure sign of a maritime background. So, plants like armeria maritima, crambe maritima and that prickly customer, eryngium maritinum or sea holly – these are definitely old crusties. As is limonium Salt Lake which seems to have salt crystals already layered on its leaves. Some taller plantings can be introduced with euphorbias and towering verbascums whose rosette of leaves hug the ground anchoring that tall flower stem. Gaura and verbena bonariensis will sway and dance like whirling dervishes, bending and bowing but never breaking! Remember that all these plantings are ideal for us too. For those of you with seaside apartments they are perfect; but hillside campo dwellers too can get vicious winds. These are truly the windbusters! Happy holidays! Please remember that the Garden Centre is closed during the month of August, reopening on Tuesday 6th September 2016.
